- 0:00Speaker 1: We're holding an anti demonstration demonstration on the quad at noon.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I hope you can make it. It's one more thing.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I'm strong, and one more thing.
- 0:11Speaker 1: We're going to have an anti demonstration demonstration and chant
- 0:14Speaker 1: no more chanting, no more chanting.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I can get behind this. Yeah.
- 0:20Speaker 1: That would be pretty funny, wouldn't it.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Speaking of the protests, Bill Maher had something to say
- 0:24Speaker 2: about it on his HBO show Friday Night.
- 0:26Speaker 3: No, you know Passover It celebrates the exodus of the
- 0:29Speaker 3: Jews in Biblical times from Egypt, and nowadays it celebrates
- 0:33Speaker 3: the exodus of the Jews from Columbia University. Yeah, when
- 0:43Speaker 3: did Columbia become Kanye State? The campuses across the country
- 0:50Speaker 3: or in kash They kids have put up all these
- 0:52Speaker 3: tent encampments on the quads and they won't come out
- 0:56Speaker 3: of their tents. The authorities don't know what to do.
- 0:58Speaker 3: They don't know how to get them out of their fence.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Now where do their phones die? They'll come out, But
- 1:11Speaker 3: ked's little excep. Keep those tents. You're gonna need them
- 1:14Speaker 3: when you graduate.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Wow wow, shot there jokes there.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But Bill Maher goes on to agree with a lot
- 1:22Speaker 2: of punditory across America. If this is how you deal
- 1:24Speaker 2: with it, you tell them you're gonna get kicked out
- 1:26Speaker 2: of college if you don't get off the lawn. And
- 1:29Speaker 2: then if you don't get off the lawn, after you
- 1:31Speaker 2: kicked out of college, you get arrested and you don't
- 1:33Speaker 2: go to school here anymore. So that's how that ends.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Listen, Junior, you spent a great deal of time and governing,
- 1:38Speaker 1: your parents and taxpayer's money on getting your worthless degree.
- 1:42Speaker 2: What if you didn't get your worthless.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Degree at all? Okay, because that's what you're playing with.
- 1:46Speaker 1: But again, as I said on the show many times,
- 1:47Speaker 1: it's you've got to stop thinking about colleges and universities
- 1:52Speaker 1: and the way we used to you got an educational
- 1:54Speaker 1: establishment and students coming eager to learn and get a degree.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Now it's it's just it's a huge amount of money
- 2:00Speaker 1: for a worthless degree, and the purveyors of worthless degrees
- 2:04Speaker 1: are not going to mess with their customer base by
- 2:07Speaker 1: asking them to do anything. It's just not what it's
- 2:10Speaker 1: about anymore.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Bill Maher's a Jew, you know, I do know that.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Actually he's half Jewish, half Catholic.
- 2:17Speaker 1: It's right. I think I've heard him talk about that.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He's an atheist himself.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Right, absolutely, and really really hates religion.
- 2:23Speaker 1: So when I was a youngster on the campus of
- 2:26Speaker 1: the University of Illinois at or Bana Champaign, there was
- 2:30Speaker 1: a big divest from South Africa movement, and there is
- 2:34Speaker 1: at one point, I think, some tents on the quater somewhere,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and I was aware of it, and I think I
- 2:43Speaker 1: sniffed around to figure out what they're they're protesting about,
- 2:47Speaker 1: or why they're sleeping in their tents, and I remember
- 2:51Speaker 1: a distinct feeling of that's interesting. But I got to
- 2:57Speaker 1: go to class. Yeah, I want to see my girl friend.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I just good for you. But I don't know whether
- 3:05Speaker 1: I was like shallow and apathetic or wise beyond my years.
- 3:09Speaker 1: But I thought, I'm not gonna spend my time doing that.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I have things that do.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I had a full time job all through college.
- 3:14Speaker 2: For the idea of it would have been complete nonsense.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But the just the even with free time, the I'm
- 3:20Speaker 2: gonna get involved in how the college spends its money
- 3:23Speaker 2: just seems weird to.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Me, right, And it's not like I was pro apartheid
- 3:29Speaker 1: or or Earth or wanted Nelson Mandela to stay in
- 3:32Speaker 1: jail or anything like that. I just didn't think. I
- 3:35Speaker 1: thought I don't have a role in this. I wouldn't
- 3:37Speaker 1: be doing any good, so I didn't. And again, does
- 3:42Speaker 1: that make me shallow and apathetic or wise beyond my
- 3:45Speaker 1: years or both? I don't know.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I don't know either.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I just I'm reminded of the city councils passing resolutions
- 3:53Speaker 1: condemning something happening sixty five hundred mile or eight thousand
- 3:56Speaker 1: miles away. You're a freaking city council fixed the potholes.
- 4:01Speaker 1: This is not your job. It's so obvious you're doing
- 4:04Speaker 1: this to elevate your own self worth or your own
- 4:08Speaker 1: self importance, or to appear impressive. Everybody knows it. Stop it.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Some of the college kids are hilariously uninterested in why
- 4:17Speaker 2: they're there to protest, though I saw more of those
- 4:20Speaker 2: over the weekend. I guess it's just, you know, they're
- 4:23Speaker 2: just there to be there. Yeah, nothing draws a crowd
- 4:25Speaker 2: like a crowd, and especially for the guys. That's where
- 4:27Speaker 2: the hot chicks are. Okay, well, I'm going I don't
- 4:29Speaker 2: care what it's for.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And honestly, I thought that piece that I shared part
- 4:33Speaker 1: of that mentioned the COVID, the COVID lockdowns, and how
- 4:37Speaker 1: lonely these kids are and how desperate they are for
- 4:40Speaker 1: some sort of communal experience. I think that that's probably
- 4:43Speaker 1: that's not the main fuel for the fire, but that's
- 4:46Speaker 1: a factor.
- 4:47Speaker 2: That's a hard thing to internalize that you missed out
- 4:50Speaker 2: on several years of that very important part of your
- 4:53Speaker 2: life of being involved in anything that's been very strange.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I didn't live through that.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Yeah. The only demonstrations I were call attending regularly were
- 5:02Speaker 1: the annual hash Wednesday on the on the Quad, in
- 5:06Speaker 1: which we peacefully advocated for the legalization of marijuana by
- 5:10Speaker 1: getting stoned. I would go to again, entirely peaceful.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I gathered four quarter Fridays at the Golden Queue regularly.
- 5:23Speaker 1: To protest beer company price gouging, to protest beer costing
- 5:28Speaker 1: more than twenty five cents uh. And because it was
- 5:32Speaker 1: really an anti sobriety protest.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Because I was the morning guy at the radio station,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I got off early, so I would go and I
- 5:38Speaker 2: would get there around noon and I would get a
- 5:40Speaker 2: booth so that everybody else jeez. So I was there
- 5:42Speaker 2: for what four hours before everybody else got there. Good lord,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I would get a booth there at quarter Friday because
- 5:50Speaker 2: it got pretty crowded given the fact that beer's were
- 5:53Speaker 2: a quarter. I mean, and that's I didn't realize I'm
- 5:56Speaker 2: old in inflation, but that's cheap even then. I mean,
- 5:58Speaker 2: that was dirt. That was like free even then. Man
- 6:01Speaker 2: that got placed got rowdy. It was a draft beer,
- 6:06Speaker 2: so you know, it's in a plastic cup, but it's
- 6:08Speaker 2: still twenty five cents of beer. Good lord, you're stealing
- 6:12Speaker 2: it at that point. Oh yeah, yeah. How do you
- 6:15Speaker 2: make any money off of that? I guess I don't
- 6:16Speaker 2: even know how you come out ahead? Why did they
- 6:18Speaker 2: even have you there? Did they make enough money off
- 6:20Speaker 2: the pool tables or maybe buying burgers? Maybe enough people
- 6:23Speaker 2: bought burgers when they got hungry.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Yeah, that had to be it. So I'm guessing that
- 6:28Speaker 1: was like nineteen eighty five something like that.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Ish.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll say nineteen eighty five.
- 6:34Speaker 2: So he's gonna do the inflation and what it would
- 6:36Speaker 2: be now.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Yeah, eighty five, the good old days.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Long before you were born.
- 6:44Speaker 1: A quarter beer in nineteen eighty five would be a
- 6:46Speaker 1: seventy three cent beer. Yeah, my day's money.
- 6:50Speaker 2: So even in today's money, and it's pretty cheap.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah, let's go ahead and round up to seventy five
- 6:54Speaker 1: cents and get our drink.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Call. Oh my god, people be laying on the floor
- 7:01Speaker 2: that you had to step over and nobody even thought
- 7:03Speaker 2: about it, Just like you got to step over that
- 7:05Speaker 2: girl on the way to the bathroom and step over
- 7:06Speaker 2: again on my back. Oh my gosh, she's taking a nap.
- 7:11Speaker 2: She's tired.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yes, But the difference, or the key point is, Katie,
- 7:15Speaker 1: we had to go to class and learn stuff and
- 7:18Speaker 1: prove we knew it on tests and actually studied a lot.
- 7:23Speaker 1: So that's changed.
- 7:25Speaker 2: People slumped over with vomita on their shirts.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Good times, and now you learn nothing in chant in
- 7:33Speaker 1: favor of terrorists. The college experience has definitely changed.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Well, guess that's it.
