Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Individual Action Needed to Implement the Spiritual Path in One's Life
Transcript
- 0:01The vital nature wants to continue its old ways and
- 0:04achieve fulfillment of its desires.
- 0:07It is also very effective at finding ways to convince the
- 0:11mind to carry out its impulses and desires.
- 0:15When an individual takes up the spiritual path, the vital being
- 0:19does not get discouraged. It simply tries to find ways to
- 0:23carry on while paying lip service to the spiritual
- 0:27seeking. One of the ways it does that is
- 0:31to latch onto the idea, true in an ultimate sense, that it is
- 0:36the divine force which is carrying out the sadhna.
- 0:39It then can conclude that the individual need not do anything
- 0:44because the Divine is responsible and doing it.
- 0:47All this is ultimately an excuse for it to continue in its
- 0:51habitual ways of action and enjoyment by forsaking
- 0:55responsibility for making any changes.
- 1:00In his book The Mother, Sri Aurobindo addresses this point
- 1:04clearly. Quote.
- 1:07Note that a temasek surrender, refusing to fulfill the
- 1:10conditions and calling on God to do everything and save one all
- 1:15the trouble and struggle is a deception and does not lead to
- 1:21freedom and perfection. End Quote.
- 1:25The divine force acts by providing insight, inspiration
- 1:30and support to the individual who is charged with undertaking
- 1:34the actions that lead to changes in human nature over time.
- 1:39This implies that there is an effort, an action by the
- 1:43individual, which Rioralbindo defines as aspiration,
- 1:48rejection, and surrender. Without this, the idea of
- 1:54spirituality is essentially just a mental conception, similar to
- 1:57the idea that one can learn to swim by reading a book about
- 2:01swimming without ever getting in the water.
- 2:06Turning the mind toward the spiritual focus is a positive
- 2:09step. Providing the emotional and
- 2:12vital support for that focus helps to bring it into action.
- 2:16Carrying it out in one's life, in one's inner reactions and in
- 2:21one's external relations is the implementation that is
- 2:25eventually needed to be successful in the yogic
- 2:28endeavour. Rooting out those ideas, habits,
- 2:33predilections, trained responses and desires that contradict this
- 2:37spiritual action is the process called for the rejection of the
- 2:43old Ways and Means of living, Sri Robindo writes quote Faith,
- 2:52reliance upon God, surrender and self giving to the divine power
- 2:57are necessary and indispensable. But reliance upon God must not
- 3:03be made an excuse for indolence, weakness and surrender to the
- 3:08impulses of the lower nature. It must go along with untiring
- 3:13aspiration and a personal rejection of all that comes in
- 3:17the way of the Divine truth. The surrender to the Divine must
- 3:21not be turned into an excuse, a cloak, or an occasion for
- 3:26surrender to 1's own desires and lower movements or to 1's ego.
