- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Okay, this is weird. I'm not used to being the one to,
- 0:08Tad Eggleston: Have to do the openings here.
- 0:11Tad Eggleston: But I don't know if I'm willing to give them to you, Phil.
- 0:15Tad Eggleston: So, so I'm gonna do the opening here, in our first… First Tyler Free morning e-episode.
- 0:25Tad Eggleston: So, good morning, everybody! Welcome back to 22 Panels, the com… or the…
- 0:33Tad Eggleston: The podcast, I was about to say the comic book, the podcast where we explore, examine, and elevate the medium of comics. With me across the interwebs.
- 0:43Tad Eggleston: Sweep.
- 0:44Phil: And that sound, that sound of dust shooting out of a tiny metal tube is, we're out of wet fluid!
- 0:53Phil: Yeah, buildings.
- 0:55Tad Eggleston: My, my web fluid's, not that great. Is, is Phil, and
- 1:03Tad Eggleston: We get to go on without Tyler today. Also, we're going to do a kind of abbreviated episode, because I am on the ground in Columbus at CXC, and, you know, have stuff to do, people to help out, that sort of thing. So, good morning, Phil, how are you?
- 1:21Phil: Good morning, I'm doing… I'm doing alright. I…
- 1:24Tad Eggleston: And actually.
- 1:24Phil: So…
- 1:24Tad Eggleston: The last couple of times I've been on a…
- 1:28Tad Eggleston: Zoom with you, you've been shrouded in the darkness of your porch.
- 1:33Phil: Right? Oh, yeah, no, this is what happens when, you know, we're at our regular recording time and the nice sunny mornings, and you see the, you know, the lovely arrangement of flowers and books and artwork behind me.
- 1:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, it is Saturday morning, not Sunday morning.
- 1:48Phil: Yeah. Did I say Sunday morning?
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: Yes, you did.
- 1:51Phil: Oh, crud. Oh, there we go. See?
- 1:54Tad Eggleston: Also, you know, I mean, I, I, I've read… I've,
- 1:58Tad Eggleston: I have recorded more episodes not at 7am on Saturday morning than at 7am on Saturday morning, so for you and Tyler, it might feel like the normal time, but for me, it's no more than normal than, like, 7pm on any given evening.
- 2:16Phil: Right, right.
- 2:17Phil: There we go. Yeah, maybe one day, one day I'll have a well-lit porch, and I'll be able to, be able to, you know.
- 2:25Phil: not… Put off, put off, I guess.
- 2:28Tad Eggleston: You know, lanterns aren't that expensive.
- 2:31Phil: No, not really. And I mean, it's… it's… there's lights out there, it's just not quite the shade that picks up on Zoom.
- 2:40Phil: Yeah, all sorts of stuff.
- 2:41Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 2:43Tad Eggleston: Anyway, you have been given the first two news items now.
- 2:49Tad Eggleston: We do have…
- 2:50Phil: Oh, waiting for me. I was… see, here I was mulling over the odds of finding a comic book that could examine the medium of podcasts and examine, explore, and elevate that. Oh.
- 3:01Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, there is… Hold on a sec.
- 3:05Phil: Murder podcast, isn't it? Isn't… or.
- 3:08Tad Eggleston: There is… there is that, but I was actually thinking of… .
- 3:13Phil: messy?
- 3:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's… that's coming out soon, but I was talking to… to Matt.
- 3:22Tad Eggleston: Madden last night, and if I recall correctly, his wife, Jessica…
- 3:29Tad Eggleston: Did a book with Ira Glass?
- 3:33Phil: That's exciting!
- 3:34Tad Eggleston: Out on the wire, the storytelling secrets of the new masters of Radio.
- 3:41Phil: Yeah, that does.
- 3:42Tad Eggleston: Uncle.
- 3:43Phil: We're already behind the curve, so…
- 3:44Tad Eggleston: Discover how the best of the best in radio and podcasting make their magic. Ira Glass, Alex Bloomberg, and more. So, I mean…
- 3:55Tad Eggleston: There is a comic book about podcasting.
- 3:58Phil: Lovely. You know, that's just… whenever you think there's.
- 4:01Tad Eggleston: I still haven't read it, I, I need to.
- 4:05Phil: But there actually is a comic about everything.
- 4:08Tad Eggleston: But there is, there is a comic about podcasting, and, like, oh god, I even own it.
- 4:16Phil: Isn't that… you know, if I read all the.
- 4:18Tad Eggleston: I made the Kindle purchase on February 5th, 2022. I've owned it for… For more than 3 years.
- 4:26Phil: Man, so yeah, I need to put it… Where are you laundry there?
- 4:30Tad Eggleston: I need to put it higher on my read list now. It's actually been out since August 25th, 2015, so there has been a comic on podcasting for 10 years now.
- 4:42Phil: Wow.
- 4:43Phil: And here, and here I was.
- 4:44Tad Eggleston: I'm throwing that out there, Phil.
- 4:46Tad Eggleston: Way behind the times.
- 4:47Phil: I just wanted some simple wordplay, and I got a history lesson. This is why this podcast is amazing. Our news of note…
- 4:55Tad Eggleston: I mean, did you realize what you were getting? I mean, you're a listener, Phil, you should have known what you were getting yourself into.
- 5:00Phil: I know, and I love it, that's why I'm here. I told you, my favorite way to ingest this podcast is direct from the source. It is to be on it. It's, you know, the interactive listening. Not to change the subject, but just to.
- 5:13Tad Eggleston: And as he says that, like, back us on Patreon and or just send us an email through to 22Panels.
- 5:22Tad Eggleston: Podcast at gmail.com, and you too might be allowed to join a book club.
- 5:28Phil: There we go!
- 5:29Tad Eggleston: Because I like talking comics, in case people haven't noticed.
- 5:34Phil: And, you know, I love audience participation, I love feedback, I would love to hear from anyone who listens to the show what they think, the stuff crawling around in their brain.
- 5:45Phil: But our news of note that, that I, hastily cultivated throughout the week. First up, we have DC Comics, now available day and date on Global Comics app.
- 5:55Phil: This is… slightly surreal, in that I feel like this is the third time I've seen this headline, but…
- 6:01Phil: Here it is!
- 6:02Phil: Comics, day and date, on Global Comics.
- 6:04Tad Eggleston: No, I think it was DC Comes to Global Comics, and then DC Comes to Ichiban.
- 6:10Phil: Mmm.
- 6:11Tad Eggleston: And then DC becomes available for purchase.
- 6:16Tad Eggleston: Day and date, though I think I might have also put it in the news items when… When,
- 6:26Tad Eggleston: DC was… It was announced that this was happening.
- 6:31Phil: Right, okay, and now it's actually happening. We've gone… we've gone through the whole… the whole digestion.
- 6:38Tad Eggleston: Now, it is actually a thing that you can…
- 6:43Phil: I will…
- 6:44Tad Eggleston: legit do.
- 6:45Phil: Exactly. I'll be able to… I'll be on the prowl for that on… on good ol' Global Comics. I do enjoy it, it's a good time, a lot of great stuff on there.
- 6:54Tad Eggleston: It is like day and date dark horse, it's day and date purchase.
- 7:00Tad Eggleston: So it's not part of the gold membership, it's… Right.
- 7:03Phil: Right.
- 7:04Tad Eggleston: It's.
- 7:04Phil: and…
- 7:05Tad Eggleston: Though gold membership, I think, has, like, a 10% discount on it, something like that.
- 7:10Phil: Okay, interesting, yeah, yeah.
- 7:13Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, it's similar to the old… Comixology… unlimited…
- 7:22Tad Eggleston: Format, where you… you… you both have…
- 7:26Tad Eggleston: A huge number of comics that are just free to you, but you then also get a discount on things that are for sale.
- 7:31Phil: Oh yeah, and I'm always finding new things on that Gold membership, which is great, you know.
- 7:38Tad Eggleston: They've got, like, 100,000 comics available to Gold Membership. Now, I mean…
- 7:42Phil: I haven't even.
- 7:43Tad Eggleston: Partially, it's because they've gone… Out of their way to include
- 7:47Tad Eggleston: Making it easy for independent creators to post stuff.
- 7:52Tad Eggleston: So you have both, like, publisher stuff, and you have…
- 7:56Tad Eggleston: Stuff from Webtoon, stuff from Instagram, stuff from.
- 7:59Phil: compete.
- 7:59Tad Eggleston: who have never done digital comics before, but saw, oh, if I scan my stuff, I can put it up here.
- 8:06Phil: Absolutely, and that's… that's a facet of it I haven't even really dug into yet, is all the new creator-owned things that are on there, but yeah.
- 8:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I haven't done enough of that, but, like… Definitely some.
- 8:19Phil: I clicked on one, and now it.
- 8:20Tad Eggleston: It's getting recommended every time. Right. Yep.
- 8:25Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 8:25Tad Eggleston: So…
- 8:27Tad Eggleston: I'm kind of curious as to what this next news item means.
- 8:31Phil: Yes, so, so, the line that I said, this is why we don't let the universes touch, was this the week that, well…
- 8:40Phil: this… I don't remember if Batman Deadpool came out, but there were certainly some…
- 8:44Tad Eggleston: I did.
- 8:45Phil: Oh, it did? Okay, yeah, so I saw online there were some leaked spoilers that, you know, and it did come out. There was… it… I'm specifically talking about the story where Captain America remembers the time that he first met Wonder Woman, and she saved him with a defining moment of his life by convincing him not to kill Hitler.
- 9:06Tad Eggleston: I haven't actually read it.
- 9:08Phil: Neither have I. It just… it was.
- 9:10Tad Eggleston: Well, I haven't gotten to there. I've read… I've read… I'm, like, most of the way through the… it's literally the book that I'm working on right now, but I've been busy the last couple of days.
- 9:20Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 9:20Tad Eggleston: So I haven't quite wrapped up the Batman Deadpool story, which is fantastic. I guess what I would say is, like.
- 9:34Tad Eggleston: first of all, like, I know the first source that started to make a big deal out of the…
- 9:41Tad Eggleston: the… Batman…
- 9:45Tad Eggleston: or not the Batman, the Wonder Woman Captain America thing, and, like, they're so popular with comics creators that when he finally got a Blue Sky account, like…
- 9:56Tad Eggleston: Comics Blue Sky Revolted.
- 9:59Phil: Right. It's… let me… let me.
- 10:01Tad Eggleston: Let me be clear. They wanted to know who… who had given… now, I don't name his name, because A, I don't know… when I think about it, I try not to even gender, because A, I don't know him personally. B, I know a handful of people who do
- 10:16Tad Eggleston: Seemed to like him.
- 10:17Phil: Clearly, clearly, people still talk to him.
- 10:20Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 10:20Phil: juice.
- 10:21Tad Eggleston: But his… well, he's also, good at digging in certain ways. Like, like, he essentially announced…
- 10:34Tad Eggleston: Like, 2 months before they had any intention of announcing.
- 10:39Tad Eggleston: A book that a friend of mine was doing.
- 10:43Tad Eggleston: Because it managed to go up in the Amazon metadata.
- 10:47Phil: Oh, okay. And he does regular searches for…
- 10:52Tad Eggleston: certain things in Amazon, so…
- 10:54Phil: Oh my gosh.
- 10:55Tad Eggleston: he googled somebody's name, and…
- 10:58Tad Eggleston: come up with this thing that was probably on, like, page 50, because it wasn't even a completely live page yet. Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:06Tad Eggleston: And suddenly… Breaking news that they're like, god damn it.
- 11:10Phil: Yeah. We had an announcement planned for…
- 11:13Phil: Yeah, and this is where I just want to clarify that when I see… when I see that site, I don't click the link, I just see the headline, and I see what people are talking about it. I don't… it's one of those.
- 11:24Tad Eggleston: I actually…
- 11:25Phil: I usually.
- 11:26Tad Eggleston: I actually…
- 11:26Phil: Yeah, the headlines.
- 11:27Tad Eggleston: I actually often click the link and read whatever
- 11:31Tad Eggleston: They have to say, and don't pay attention at all to what people are saying about it.
- 11:37Phil: Yeah, so that's funny. Okay, so between the two of us, And get the complete experience.
- 11:41Tad Eggleston: And honestly, like, I did read that article, and like, it was a nothing burger, at least.
- 11:49Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 11:50Tad Eggleston: I didn't even know which… Well, but I don't even… I didn't even, like…
- 11:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, there was no part of it that made me think that there was… which makes me wonder how many people responding to it also didn't click the link.
- 12:07Phil: That's, you know, I mean, it, again.
- 12:10Phil: The level of news I expect from them is headline.
- 12:14Tad Eggleston: Right. We try to go deeper than that, Phil. We do, we do, and I…
- 12:19Phil: That's why… that's why I don't want… I don't want it to be a regular news item. This was just an especially silly one that…
- 12:26Tad Eggleston: That's fine, that's fine, I'm just giving you shit. Thank you, thank you.
- 12:30Phil: I will, I will happily take it, and… and just, just add it.
- 12:33Tad Eggleston: Note on your first solo day, like, we generally try to go deeper than that.
- 12:39Phil: Yeah, right? Do we?
- 12:41Tad Eggleston: Because among other things, I mean, let's just say…
- 12:43Phil: Is that how you elevate?
- 12:45Tad Eggleston: Here's what I'm gonna say, not having gotten to the story yet, so if I get to the story and I'm truly offended, I promise to retract next week.
- 12:54Tad Eggleston: Anytime you… I mean, this is along the lines of Nick Spencer and Hale Hydra, okay? If you don't read it, it's easy to go, oh my god, how could you possibly do that? Blah blah blah blah blah.
- 13:07Phil: Right.
- 13:08Tad Eggleston: And that is ignoring the idea that, like, Marvel editorial and corporate would, like, never possibly allow something that outrageous
- 13:22Tad Eggleston: Unless… The story was fucking good.
- 13:27Phil: Well, and I just… I just find, again, the other note that people online brought up
- 13:33Phil: is that, way back in the day, way back in the 40s, the original Android Human Torch burned Hitler alive.
- 13:41Tad Eggleston: Nick?
- 13:42Phil: And then, in the Ultimate Universe, Dennis Camp doubled down on it. I believe there was even an unlimited story by Al Ewing that said, no, no, no, that was… that was the right thing to do. So…
- 13:53Phil: Sure.
- 13:54Tad Eggleston: And here's my question, because I don't know those well enough. Did it work?
- 14:02Phil: What… did what work?
- 14:03Phil: Killing Hitler?
- 14:03Tad Eggleston: burning Hitler alive, make it so there was no Holocaust or World War II.
- 14:09Phil: I don't think that's the… that's the goal of… of having a fictional depiction of… of killing Hitler. I think the goal… Well, but isn't it?
- 14:18Tad Eggleston: Oh. I don't, because I don't think… I don't think it's reasonable. Okay, okay, no, no, it's okay to say that it's catharsis, but, but then I'm gonna take it a step further.
- 14:29Phil: If it's.
- 14:30Tad Eggleston: catharsis?
- 14:33Tad Eggleston: If it's just the revenge and catharsis, is Captain America the symbol for that?
- 14:39Phil: He was originally.
- 14:42Phil: And I think what's really interesting is.
- 14:44Tad Eggleston: He was a symbol of revenge?
- 14:46Phil: No, he was a symbol of killing Hitler.
- 14:49Phil: I think that… I think that… you know, It could… I, I think saying…
- 14:57Tad Eggleston: of fighting fascism.
- 14:59Phil: He was, he was, but what I'm also trying to say is that
- 15:02Phil: Catharsis is downplaying it. It's underplaying it. It's… it's… this is… this is a core struggle at the… at the center of humanity for me. You know, the struggle of the soul of humanity, and comparing how these symbols, these superheroes, were originally used as inspiration, and again.
- 15:20Phil: instilling… having a, a…
- 15:22Tad Eggleston: But inspiration to fight the ideas that Hitler espoused more than… Let's just…
- 15:30Tad Eggleston: Go behead the beast and be done.
- 15:32Phil: Right. And I guess…
- 15:34Tad Eggleston: I mean, so this is… this is where, like, and again, because Wonder Woman's not necessarily… and again, I haven't gotten to the story yet, but neither of you
- 15:43Tad Eggleston: Knowing what we know about Wonder Woman and Captain America, if she was…
- 15:52Tad Eggleston: if she had convinced him not to kill Hitler or whatnot, do you think it would have been, like, a, okay, you just battled through all of the Nazis to get to the bunker, you know, or do you think it's more of a…
- 16:07Tad Eggleston: You were given an opportunity to time travel back, and… I, you know… No.
- 16:14Phil: I don't think there was time travel involved in these shenanigans.
- 16:18Tad Eggleston: Well, but what I mean, even if it's not time travel, like…
- 16:25Tad Eggleston: And it's something that, like, we struggle with a lot, or should be struggling with a lot, you know, because, like.
- 16:35Tad Eggleston: Drone… targeted drone strikes are essentially…
- 16:39Phil: summary executions.
- 16:42Phil: Yeah, that's, you know.
- 16:44Tad Eggleston: So here, here, here, here's where you get into really sticky moral ground.
- 16:51Phil: Huh.
- 16:54Tad Eggleston: Death in combat is one thing.
- 16:56Tad Eggleston: And frankly, I think that, like, if we're being truly moral, we should be trying to minimize that as well.
- 17:04Phil: Yeah.
- 17:05Tad Eggleston: But when you execute an individual without trial, is that…
- 17:21Tad Eggleston: Ever justifiable?
- 17:23Phil: Only when it's Hitler.
- 17:28Tad Eggleston: And that's kind of what I expected. I would have to know the context.
- 17:33Tad Eggleston: Is it Hitler on a street corner in Munich in 1926?
- 17:39Phil: I think, I think.
- 17:41Tad Eggleston: Hitler as he's running for chancellor, or is it Hitler at the end of the war?
- 17:45Phil: There's no wrong answers, they're all Hitler, so it all
- 17:48Phil: It's fun! It's all kosher in my book.
- 17:51Phil: Sorry for that. I use the phrase kosher at four times occasionally, but actually, yeah, I mean, and this is what I'm coming back to. So, growing up in my youth.
- 17:59Tad Eggleston: Well, but, but, but…
- 18:00Phil: Hold on a second, hold on a second. So, growing up in my youth, I would, you know, get into arguments about, like, general morality, and I would reference, well, hey, we can't let these extremes get too far because the Nazis. And my sister would usually say, oh, you can't just bring up the Nazis to win every argument.
- 18:20Phil: And that was before they started returning to society. So, yeah, I think… I think that's a pretty strong, North Star, morally, that, like, this is the point of opposition, you know?
- 18:32Tad Eggleston: Sure, but in 1926, if you don't have time travel.
- 18:37Phil: Yeah.
- 18:39Tad Eggleston: How do you know Hitler will become what he becomes?
- 18:42Phil: You don't. You don't.
- 18:44Tad Eggleston: So how can… so how is it okay to similarly execute them?
- 18:48Phil: Because to… to do that, you would need time travel, and you would know that he became Hitler at that point. Right.
- 18:54Tad Eggleston: But, but, but, but that's, that's my point, is, like…
- 19:02Tad Eggleston: There reached a point where killing him?
- 19:07Phil: I, I do…
- 19:08Tad Eggleston: Was, was acceptable?
- 19:09Phil: Right, and I do hear your point in that, in hindsight, yes, but with foresight, it's not as clear because you don't know the same things.
- 19:21Tad Eggleston: But also, there's a reason that we have rules for war. Right. You know?
- 19:28Tad Eggleston: They're imperfect, because war is horrible.
- 19:34Tad Eggleston: But if you don't abide by them… like…
- 19:40Tad Eggleston: We decide Hitler is going down the wrong way, so they decide Lincoln is.
- 19:45Phil: Mmm.
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, you think that John Wilkes Booth wasn't confident that he was saving America?
- 19:54Phil: Yeah, that is… that is an interesting point. That is a very interesting point, and I think that there's also…
- 20:00Tad Eggleston: Semper Tyrannus?
- 20:01Phil: Yes, I also think there's danger in attempting to call anyone that you're opposed to a Hitler, you know? It's just that, again.
- 20:13Phil: When you're dealing with the source, when you're dealing with.
- 20:15Tad Eggleston: Oh, I know, I know, but… Yes. But,
- 20:20Tad Eggleston: Particularly writing a story in that age.
- 20:24Tad Eggleston: Or in this age, rather.
- 20:26Phil: Yeah.
- 20:26Tad Eggleston: Isn't it all… also possibly an allegory for… for turn the temperature down and, like…
- 20:35Tad Eggleston: talk, and…
- 20:40Tad Eggleston: Figure out what's going on, and hold people accountable, but, like… I mean…
- 20:49Phil: The… the other… the point that…
- 20:51Tad Eggleston: Here's another way to put it.
- 20:55Tad Eggleston: If… Hitler hadn't committed suicide in the bunker.
- 21:02Tad Eggleston: If instead, he'd been part of the Nuremberg trials.
- 21:08Tad Eggleston: Do you think it's as likely that…
- 21:10Tad Eggleston: 70 years later, so much of the world is back where it is? Or do you think that that is the testimony, the…
- 21:18Tad Eggleston: Results, the evidence that would have to come out, the things that we looked the other way about for years because they were so horrible, but we wouldn't be able to because they were part of a necessary trial.
- 21:32Phil: Right. And that's actually the point that I want to do more research on, and need to do more research on, because
- 21:40Phil: people were pointing out, like, yes, the implication of the story was, oh, don't kill him, he needs to stand trial for his crimes, and other people said, Hitler was put on trial, there was an attempt to try Hitler, and it did not go well. And I wasn't able to research the details there, but…
- 21:56Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm certain… I mean, I am certain that he was put… I think he was even put on trial. I mean, I know he wrote parts of Mein Kampf in prison.
- 22:03Phil: Oh, okay.
- 22:04Tad Eggleston: So that was, that was, like…
- 22:08Tad Eggleston: He's far from the first person to get out of prison for other things and manage to still rise to power.
- 22:17Phil: Right.
- 22:17Tad Eggleston: He wasn't put on trial.
- 22:20Tad Eggleston: For the Holocaust.
- 22:22Phil: Right.
- 22:23Tad Eggleston: He wasn't alive to be put on trial for the Holocaust.
- 22:27Phil: Right. So, I guess it's… it's… that's…
- 22:31Phil: that is a point of… of this conversation that I, you know, that I look at, and I'm like, meh, I need to… I need to investigate, I need to, you know.
- 22:39Tad Eggleston: Well, and it's not… and it's not something that is ultimately knowable. Just like, you know, I lean towards, I would have preferred if SEAL Team 6 had taken Bin Laden alive.
- 22:52Phil: That's fair, too.
- 22:53Tad Eggleston: there are complications to that. It becomes more dangerous, it becomes…
- 22:59Phil: Yeah.
- 23:02Phil: And also, for the record, I don't think… I don't think Bin Laden and Hitler are equivalent situations at all, and I didn't think.
- 23:09Tad Eggleston: Oh, they're… yeah, no, they're.
- 23:10Phil: I just wanted to make sure, I just wanted to make sure anyone.
- 23:12Tad Eggleston: No, no, no.
- 23:12Phil: I think we were.
- 23:13Tad Eggleston: No, no, and I'm not making them out to be equivalent, and we didn't have that opportunity with Hitler. We weren't in the…
- 23:21Tad Eggleston: SEAL Team 6 weren't even alive.
- 23:23Tad Eggleston: Sorry.
- 23:25Phil: Humor, humor.
- 23:26Tad Eggleston: We weren't in the bunker when he committed suicide.
- 23:29Phil: Right, exactly.
- 23:32Phil: As far as we know.
- 23:33Tad Eggleston: But… but, like…
- 23:37Tad Eggleston: that's the question. If we'd been in a position where we could have taken him alive and made him stand accountable.
- 23:46Tad Eggleston: Versus… Executing him without trial.
- 23:55Tad Eggleston: Which, I mean, and…
- 23:58Tad Eggleston: I know it's uncomfortable, and I don't even know if it's what I want, but I think that the difference between fascism and freedom and democracy is that we would say that
- 24:11Tad Eggleston: It doesn't matter what our feelings are.
- 24:16Tad Eggleston: there's a process.
- 24:18Tad Eggleston: And we have to follow it.
- 24:23Tad Eggleston: Of law means something.
- 24:26Tad Eggleston: Like, a massive amount of what fascism is, is the rule of law only means something to you.
- 24:33Phil: Right. Right.
- 24:35Tad Eggleston: I get to do whatever I want, but YOU have to behave like this.
- 24:42Tad Eggleston: So…
- 24:43Phil: Yeah.
- 24:45Tad Eggleston: If you're trying to… Hold up an ideal of no one being above the law.
- 24:56Tad Eggleston: I mean, that said, if I was a soldier in the room, I don't know if I could not pull the trigger, particularly if I'd been in a camp.
- 25:02Phil: You know who would have pulled the trigger?
- 25:04Phil: It's Jack Kirby.
- 25:06Tad Eggleston: Probably. I was gonna say Frank Castle, but…
- 25:09Phil: Oh, I was gonna say Jack Kirby, because he… he has made it abundantly clear that his entire politics were, fuck you, Hitler.
- 25:18Tad Eggleston: No, but,
- 25:20Tad Eggleston: Fuck you, Hitler, doesn't mean he would necessarily pull the trigger. He could want to put him in a prison with a number of prison-only
- 25:34Tad Eggleston: because I want to be clear that I'm not saying anything against the gay community, but, you know, there are certain people that, when they're in prison, decide that it's now okay to rape men, rather.
- 25:45Phil: Yeah.
- 25:45Tad Eggleston: women, and, you know, I mean.
- 25:46Phil: And I don't think he's…
- 25:47Tad Eggleston: position is, fuck you, Hitler.
- 25:49Phil: See, now, and this is where.
- 25:51Tad Eggleston: There's my joke.
- 25:52Tad Eggleston: This is… That's an.
- 25:55Phil: Fair, Joe. I guess what I would circle around with that is that, I… I mean, this… this… not to pivot too hard, but this is where I think that prison should be actually rehabilitative and not use.
- 26:07Tad Eggleston: I do too.
- 26:07Phil: It's an additional…
- 26:08Tad Eggleston: What'd you?
- 26:09Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 26:09Tad Eggleston: Totally true.
- 26:09Phil: I, I know.
- 26:10Tad Eggleston: But I also oppose the death penalty.
- 26:12Phil: Yeah, yeah, I typically do, but I make an exception for Hitler.
- 26:18Tad Eggleston: I mean, and… and that's… that's… that's where… that's where…
- 26:22Phil: And it's… it's…
- 26:23Tad Eggleston: Everything gets messy.
- 26:24Phil: Yes.
- 26:25Tad Eggleston: And really, I mean, here's the thing.
- 26:29Tad Eggleston: Why did we allow Hitler to get to where Hitler got?
- 26:32Phil: That's a really good point. It's a really good point.
- 26:34Tad Eggleston: So, those are the things that we should be looking at more than whether or not you should kill Hitler once he gets there.
- 26:42Phil: Right, right.
- 26:44Tad Eggleston: How do you prevent Hitler's from happening?
- 26:48Phil: Yes, that is a better question.
- 26:50Tad Eggleston: That is way… worth way more study and philosophy.
- 26:54Phil: Yeah, I think…
- 26:54Tad Eggleston: That's a good one. Then, should you kill Hitler?
- 26:57Phil: Yeah.
- 26:59Phil: Because we already solved the second one.
- 27:03Tad Eggleston: Let's solve the second one.
- 27:04Phil: He did solve the second one, there we go.
- 27:06Phil: I think that's… that's, that's a quota on Hitler humor for at least 5 years, I hope. I really hope.
- 27:13Phil: I, I don't, I don't, yeah.
- 27:15Phil: I don't want to go back to this wall. This is where… okay, so quick anecdote, quick anecdote,
- 27:21Phil: When I worked at the public library, one of the only times that I dissuaded a patron from checking out a book was a rebellious teenager, somewhere between 13 and 15, who said, oh, I think it would be funny if I
- 27:37Phil: checked out and carried around a copy of Mein Kampf. Wouldn't that be so funny? And I said, no.
- 27:43Phil: I don't think that would be funny. I don't think that's a good joke to pull. If you'd like a similar effect with a better book, try the Communist Manifesto.
- 27:52Phil: You know? But…
- 27:54Phil: using my Mein Kampf as shock humor or attempts to make people uncomfortable, that's… it's okay to… to… to do shock humor and make people a little uncomfortable to keep… to think about things. Please do not use Mein Kampf for that. It is not achieving the goal and desired effect.
- 28:11Tad Eggleston: Well, here, here, here is,
- 28:15Tad Eggleston: Both my… my question for further thought, and my… My, devil's advocate.
- 28:23Tad Eggleston: My question for further thought is, should Mein Kampf be in the library?
- 28:33Tad Eggleston: I actually have a pretty strong opinion on this. I mean, it might not be the one that you'd expect.
- 28:38Phil: It's… it's hard for me… it's hard for me to say no to that, because… Right.
- 28:43Tad Eggleston: No, I agree.
- 28:44Phil: Yeah, yeah, because…
- 28:45Tad Eggleston: It has to… I honestly think it has to be.
- 28:48Phil: Yeah, it's tough. It's really tough.
- 28:50Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 28:50Phil: I mean, we can't, we can't just erase history.
- 28:53Tad Eggleston: And then it comes down to…
- 28:58Tad Eggleston: My biggest question with all shock humor.
- 29:02Tad Eggleston: What's the point?
- 29:04Tad Eggleston: Are you trying to start the conversation, or make people uncomfortable without bothering to have a conversation?
- 29:10Phil: And…
- 29:11Tad Eggleston: If you're trying to make the conversation, then I don't see a problem with, you know, I honestly don't see a problem with using it for shock humor.
- 29:21Phil: I just don't think it's… it's funny.
- 29:23Tad Eggleston: I think it's… I think it's in bad taste, but I think 99% of shock humor is in bad taste. I mean, we had an argument about this last week.
- 29:31Phil: Yeah.
- 29:34Tad Eggleston: I mean, that I was thinking a lot about with… and we'll move into what kind of week it's been. Spent a lot of time thinking about why…
- 29:44Tad Eggleston: why I'm upset that Jimmy Kimmel Was fired, and not upset.
- 29:52Tad Eggleston: that… Red Hood got canceled.
- 29:55Tad Eggleston: And I think it really comes down to…
- 30:04Tad Eggleston: like… two things.
- 30:08Tad Eggleston: The first is the speech Or, the speech in question on its face.
- 30:15Tad Eggleston: Jimmy didn't say anything objection.
- 30:19Tad Eggleston: He pissed off the wrong people.
- 30:22Tad Eggleston: The second is… that… there is a difference between Comixgate coming after you.
- 30:29Tad Eggleston: And the federal government coming after you.
- 30:32Phil: There is. There is a big difference.
- 30:35Tad Eggleston: The federal government, now it is actually a free speech issue.
- 30:39Phil: Right.
- 30:39Tad Eggleston: When it's Comics Gates coming after you, it is… it is still strictly a business issue. You have the right to say whatever you want. You don't have the right…
- 30:50Tad Eggleston: To be free from consequences.
- 30:52Phil: Yeah. And I guess this is where, you know, it points out my priorities, in that…
- 30:59Phil: Yeah, I… I absolutely want to stand up for… because that's the funny thing.
- 31:05Tad Eggleston: Well, but I also stand up for her.
- 31:07Phil: You did, yeah.
- 31:08Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 31:09Phil: Yeah, no, you pre… textbook, you're still supporting, you know, that's…
- 31:12Tad Eggleston: These are good things. And I would not have been upset if DC decided not to fire her.
- 31:17Phil: That's a good… that's a good distinction.
- 31:18Tad Eggleston: This is… this is not a… a…
- 31:22Phil: That's… that's actually… I think they made the…
- 31:24Tad Eggleston: The right decision, it's a… they made a justifiable decision.
- 31:28Phil: That's fair. That's…
- 31:30Tad Eggleston: Whether I agree with it or not, whether it's what I would have done in the same, you know, but I don't know if I'd be a great businessman, because I wouldn't work strictly towards the bottom line.
- 31:40Phil: Right.
- 31:40Tad Eggleston: And the bigger a corporation you are, the more people you answer to, the less you can do that.
- 31:48Phil: I guess… so, again, in last week, when I mentioned the frog and the scorpion, I did so intentionally because I think that, from different perspectives, you could see those roles differently. Like, me personally, I consider DC more of the scorpion in that situation.
- 32:02Tad Eggleston: It absolutely is a scorpion.
- 32:04Phil: Okay, good. And it's… it's one of those things where… you know.
- 32:11Phil: Which is… funny in that…
- 32:13Phil: I'm kind of at… I'm at… I'm at a weird… a weird, like, inverse of your position, where it's like, personally.
- 32:19Phil: I don't really care about Jimmy Kimmel, but I do care about free speech and think that no one should be fired for that kind of stuff, period, you know? Whereas…
- 32:28Tad Eggleston: Well, I don't know if I specifically care about Jimmy Kimmel, although I think he's… a funny guy.
- 32:35Tad Eggleston: But I think his case is a clear free.
- 32:40Phil: Oh!
- 32:40Tad Eggleston: violations.
- 32:41Phil: Absolutely.
- 32:41Tad Eggleston: Free speech? Free speech. Again, like, Twitter banning you?
- 32:47Phil: No, that's not a…
- 32:48Tad Eggleston: It's not a First Amendment issue.
- 32:50Phil: So, so here's… and here's a funny thing. I saw a tweet, or a perspective that… that…
- 32:55Phil: From a certain perspective, businesses censoring people is also a form of free speech.
- 33:02Tad Eggleston: It is!
- 33:03Phil: Which is… which is mind-boggling to think that… that, okay, we are officially giving the power of,
- 33:12Tad Eggleston: Like, again, if ABC had done this without explicit pressure.
- 33:19Tad Eggleston: from the government.
- 33:22Tad Eggleston: It would be a wholly different case.
- 33:25Phil: Right.
- 33:28Tad Eggleston: I still wouldn't love it, because it would be indicative… I mean, I don't… again, I don't love what happened with…
- 33:35Phil: No, no, I, I…
- 33:36Tad Eggleston: I really don't like what's been happening to teachers and librarians and social workers that they've been digging.
- 33:44Phil: Oh.
- 33:44Tad Eggleston: Any post, and, you know…
- 33:46Phil: Yes.
- 33:47Phil: Well, people who just do something as simple as quote him are getting.
- 33:51Tad Eggleston: I know.
- 33:52Phil: Those types of things, and I guess, for me.
- 33:56Tad Eggleston: And actually, you know, if they're teachers, I have a big problem with it, because that's a government job, so that…
- 34:03Phil: Yeah.
- 34:03Tad Eggleston: That, to me, starts smacking of First Amendment.
- 34:10Tad Eggleston: You know, but if you're working for a private organization, It's not actually…
- 34:19Tad Eggleston: Part of your protection is speech.
- 34:22Tad Eggleston: you're protected.
- 34:24Tad Eggleston: From governments preventing you from speech, or from punishing you for all but very specific types of speech?
- 34:34Phil: Right.
- 34:35Phil: Right.
- 34:36Phil: M…
- 34:37Tad Eggleston: Employers, in general, are not government.
- 34:42Phil: Yet.
- 34:44Phil: Lazarus.
- 34:46Tad Eggleston: Yes, but, but, like, I mean, yeah, no, I mean, as we move that way, God, it gets scarier.
- 34:52Phil: It does.
- 34:53Phil: does.
- 34:54Tad Eggleston: But I actually desperately wanted to be done in about 6 minutes, so we're now… we're now shooting for, like, 15 minutes to be done?
- 35:01Phil: Okay.
- 35:02Tad Eggleston: So, as I told you, I'm now gonna tell the listeners, I am at Cartoon Crossroads Columbus, and the new catalogs dropped yesterday afternoon and evening, and I had no time to go through them. We have a handful of items that we haven't specifically re-highlighted from the old catalog.
- 35:20Tad Eggleston: But we're not going to, because we're past the initial order date, and I am short on time.
- 35:28Tad Eggleston: But I will say, final longer cut off for Monday, September 29th, we have A Drifting Life from Yoshihiro Tatsumi at Drawn Quarterly, out November 19th. Aerotech No. 1 from Darren S. Cape, and Jeffrey Krozek from SHP, out November 19th.
- 35:44Tad Eggleston: Box Bunny Funny from Andy Hartzell, who I'll be seeing later today, and Uncivilized Books on October 29th, or if you're in Columbus.
- 35:53Tad Eggleston: Though, by the time this airs, it'll be too late. You can probably pick it up at the uncivilized table. Also, you could pick it up at the uncivilized table in SPX last week.
- 36:03Tad Eggleston: Golden Rage, Mothers Knows Best, Chrissy Williams, Lauren Knight from Image Comics on November 5th. We'll be talking to Chrissy and Lauren again this week.
- 36:14Tad Eggleston: Huge detective, Adam Romigent.
- 36:16Tad Eggleston: Adam Rose, Magenta King, Daltz, Titan, or Daltz, Dalton, rather, from Titan Books, out October 22nd. Check out our discussion with Adam Rose and Magenta King recently. Iron Man Volume 2, The Insurgent Iron Man from Spencer Ackerman, Julius Oda, and Michael Dowling. Pick up the… er, listen to my talk with Spencer Ackerman recently, definitely pick up this book, and I'm also gonna
- 36:41Tad Eggleston: Plug his newsletter.
- 36:44Tad Eggleston: In part because it's about to go into hibernation until November.
- 36:48Tad Eggleston: He's making the difficult choice that there's too much news going on that he desperately wants to respond to, and he's in a critical phase of
- 37:05Tad Eggleston: The… the writing of his next book, which is on…
- 37:10Tad Eggleston: Guantanamo, and involves extensive interviews with somebody who was held in Guantanamo for more than a decade. But…
- 37:24Tad Eggleston: like, he's got kids, he's got rent, whatnot. So, yesterday, he put out the message…
- 37:31Tad Eggleston: Begging us subscribers to… to please not stop
- 37:35Tad Eggleston: subscribing while he is on hiatus, I'm gonna take it a step further and say those of you who haven't subscribed to Forever Wars as a paid subscriber yet, now would be a great time to do so.
- 37:50Tad Eggleston: Even though you're unlikely to get much new content until November, support good Excellent.
- 37:58Tad Eggleston: independent journalism. No Place No. 1 from Tim Seeley and Stefano Simeone from Ignition Press, out November 5th. Out of Alcatraz, the collected edition from Christopher Cantwell and Tyler Crook, out from Onei on October 22nd. I will say one of the things that I got really, really excited about
- 38:19Tad Eggleston: when…
- 38:20Tad Eggleston: I was going through the catalog yesterday, and I didn't even make it all the way through, didn't make it anywhere near all the way through, but I got far enough to say that
- 38:30Tad Eggleston: Breyer is returning. He's getting to finish his story. He and Michael Lins will be back at it with an Issue 1 coming out in, I believe, December.
- 38:41Tad Eggleston: Outlaw Showdown from John R. Cooty, Brian Azzarello, and Nesenti, Tony Moore, and David Lapham, the newest
- 38:49Tad Eggleston: Anthology book from E.C. Oni, and Space Scouts, number one, from Matt Kent and David Rubin, out from Dark House, on November 5th. There's a few hours left to… to back
- 39:02Tad Eggleston: Funeral Home from Michelle Abinator and Fel Hound on Kickstarter. Go listen to our episode with them. There is a… a… about a week left to… to Back the Future Is Volume 2 Origins for Fred Van Lenti, Ennio Buffy, Mario D'Alessandro, Andrea Maloney, and Taylor Esposito from Rekka, also on Kickstarter through October.
- 39:24Tad Eggleston: Third, and go listen to our talk with Fred and publisher Adam Freeman.
- 39:35Tad Eggleston: 3 amazing books this week. I had to cheat a little, because I… I think I've only actually read
- 39:45Tad Eggleston: Well, I guess I did… I guess I wound up not cheating a little. I just decided to… to put one that I haven't re-read on top, but I read an advanced copy a while ago, and I've actually read it a couple of times. So Death in Trieste, Jason's new volume, is out from Fanographics this week, and takes my top spot. Good is Dead, number one from David and Maria Lapham.
- 40:05Tad Eggleston: Takes my second spot.
- 40:07Tad Eggleston: And, Orla No. 2 from John Lee's and Sally Cantorino at Mad Cave.
- 40:13Tad Eggleston: takes my third spot, and the only other book that I've actually managed to read all of this week was the wrap-up of
- 40:22Tad Eggleston: Alex Cormac and…
- 40:25Tad Eggleston: Anthony Cleveland's Buried Long, Long Ago, and it totally delivered. It was fantastic. So, Phil, why don't you take a walk?
- 40:34Phil: Awesome, I'm walking. I'm walking here. First up, this is actually… this is not a comic, this is a series of critical essays about comics,
- 40:43Phil: The Last War in Albion by Elizabeth Sandiffer on her site, Erudatorium Press. It is about how the Cold War, thanks to the intervention of the graphic novel Watchmen, was replaced with a magical war between Grant Morrison and Alan Moore. It is incredible, it's mind-bending, it's…
- 41:03Phil: It's so great. It's wonderful. There's also Blade Maidens by Zoe Tunnel and Valentin Smith. That's a webcomic that will eventually see print through Dark Horse. I believe. I heard they have a deal of some sort. I haven't heard that change, so I'd love to buy it physically one day. And then Keeping Time by Cody Okamoto. If you'll notice, these are all trans creators in comics.
- 41:24Phil: there are any other trans creators you're a fan of, please support their Patreons directly. It is so, so important right now that they continue to have the support of our community, and that we emphasize. I mean, as, as
- 41:37Phil: As much as possible, that these are people, they… trans rights are human rights, they're rights for all of us,
- 41:43Phil: Please, help these people now when they need it most.
- 41:47Phil: I yield the remainder of my time.
- 41:50Tad Eggleston: Alrighty.
- 41:52Phil: Not the remainder of the remainder of my time.
- 41:54Tad Eggleston: I have… I have read no more One Piece.
- 41:58Tad Eggleston: This week. I'm still in Chapter 585. Have you started One Piece?
- 42:02Phil: I have yet to start One Piece. I am, oddly enough, looking at… I've heard there's a lot of other manga we should consider, so I am currently fielding recommendations there.
- 42:14Tad Eggleston: Gotcha.
- 42:16Tad Eggleston: So, great responsibility. I guess I'm gonna start with, like, what would you like this to look like going forward? Because we've got an opportunity to…
- 42:27Tad Eggleston: reinvent it, go back to… to doing more themed things, like we did at the beginning. We could continue doing read-throughs of various things, there's a lot… I mean.
- 42:41Tad Eggleston: All I care is that we try to do something meaty where we can have a conversation that's more than, this is cool.
- 42:47Phil: I agree.
- 42:48Tad Eggleston: Even though sometimes it will wind up being the school, because we run into space constraints, or headspace constraints, or…
- 42:59Tad Eggleston: reading constraints, you know what I mean.
- 43:01Phil: Yeah, and sometimes stuff is just so cool that it blows you away, and you…
- 43:05Tad Eggleston: That leap.
- 43:06Phil: the ability to talk about it. I guess… The… so…
- 43:12Phil: It's funny, I have a lot of ideas. Definitely a lot of ideas. I don't want to…
- 43:18Phil: completely reinvent the wheel. I want to honor the tradition and legacy that 22Panels has built so far, while continuing to keep an eye on the future of comics. One of the things I appreciate about what you and Tyler have done is
- 43:34Phil: When you say.
- 43:36Phil: we want to look at all comics. We want to look at the whole medium. You actually deliver. You actually mean it. You talk to people from all corners and avenues of comics, and there's always more, and we're always… we're always looking at more. So…
- 43:52Phil: that's one thing that I think is… is very important, you know.
- 43:56Phil: Highlighting those unknown gems, And… I mean, I'd… I'd love to get…
- 44:06Phil: a little stranger, you know? Like, I think we… I think we… I mentioned, like, hey, it'd be really cool to… to pick a theme, and then… and then have, like, a… alright, you find something interesting, and I'll find something interesting, you know?
- 44:22Phil: I agree, definitely. I mean, it's…
- 44:25Phil: it's the kind of thing where I think that
- 44:27Phil: There's… it's hard to imagine a book that, if we both read, we wouldn't be able to have a conversation about it, you know?
- 44:35Phil: So, I'm hoping… I'm hoping from there we can… we can keep that going.
- 44:40Phil: But yeah, yeah, where's your head going? Because I know we've talked a little.
- 44:44Tad Eggleston: I mean, overall, I like that,
- 44:47Tad Eggleston: I'd like to start planning them ahead a little bit more again.
- 44:51Tad Eggleston: where my head is most. Just because, particularly for things like,
- 44:58Tad Eggleston: hey, let's choose a theme and each go find a book. You know, having more than a week's lead time is sometimes useful, that sort of thing. Absolutely. Particularly because I still haven't fired my scheduling agent.
- 45:12Phil: Hey, you know what? They're doing their best.
- 45:16Tad Eggleston: It's so, yeah, no, we'll figure it out.
- 45:25Phil: Yeah.
- 45:26Tad Eggleston: My brain's in too many different directions right now. Because our other part of our great responsibility today is, I'm on the ground at CXC, where last night, saw the reception and the
- 45:41Tad Eggleston: keynote speeches from Charles Burns, or keynote interviews from Charles Burns and John Musker.
- 45:48Phil: Love Charles Burns.
- 45:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, I, carol Tyler took us on a guided tour of her exhibit here.
- 45:57Tad Eggleston: And I got to spend some time with her.
- 46:00Tad Eggleston: spent time with lots of former guests and friends, and we'll do so again today. The exhibit floor at the library opens today. I'm looking forward to getting over there.
- 46:14Tad Eggleston: And, yeah. I guess the one big piece of news…
- 46:21Tad Eggleston: They used to get the college football schedules
- 46:24Tad Eggleston: 4 or 5 years in advance.
- 46:26Phil: Wow, yeah.
- 46:30Tad Eggleston: For this year, they got it 8 months in advance, and that's the way it will be going forward. 8 months is nowhere near enough time to…
- 46:40Tad Eggleston: I mean, they pulled it off this year, but, like…
- 46:44Tad Eggleston: they're kind of surprised that nobody died.
- 46:49Tad Eggleston: And I… and I mean that only, only half-jokingly. Right.
- 46:54Phil: It is football.
- 46:55Tad Eggleston: So… so they are taking 2026 off.
- 47:01Tad Eggleston: And starting in 2027, Cartoon Crossroads will be a April.
- 47:08Tad Eggleston: Rather than September.
- 47:11Tad Eggleston: convention.
- 47:12Tad Eggleston: So that it's just outside of football season entirely.
- 47:16Tad Eggleston: And so that they can actually…
- 47:19Tad Eggleston: plan in advance, and not have to… because when you're working out, getting guests, and setting flights, and setting, you know.
- 47:28Tad Eggleston: Can't do that until you have dates, and…
- 47:30Phil: Exactly.
- 47:31Tad Eggleston: Ohio State is a football town. Now, that's advantageous for CXC because, like, the number of people who are in town to rent rooms and properties and whatnot on a football weekend is beyond their wildest dreams for the number of people that would come in
- 47:48Tad Eggleston: for CXC, which means that in general.
- 47:52Tad Eggleston: On the weekends we come in, or the CXC is held, rooms are cheap and plentiful.
- 47:58Tad Eggleston: Woo!
- 47:59Phil: Go.
- 48:00Tad Eggleston: That's what you.
- 48:01Phil: I want for any convention, really.
- 48:02Tad Eggleston: Exactly.
- 48:04Tad Eggleston: But… Again, this is, this is if, if, you're not lined up.
- 48:14Tad Eggleston: against football, if you're lined up against football, managing to get rooms for anybody would be hell on earth, and really expensive.
- 48:21Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 48:23Tad Eggleston: You know, just give me another reason.
- 48:25Phil: to have a grudge against football. It's getting in the way of all of the comics that are important.
- 48:29Tad Eggleston: So, there will sadly be no 2026 CXC, but they'll be back with a Vengeance in 2027. Also, the Billy Ireland will be closing
- 48:40Tad Eggleston: I think from November through… I think it's May?
- 48:46Tad Eggleston: Due to construction in the building, but it sounds like, even though most of the construction is
- 48:54Tad Eggleston: related to other things in the building, they will wind up with a little more space when it's done, so they'll come back
- 49:02Tad Eggleston: strong.
- 49:04Tad Eggleston: They're planning to have as much programming and events in between as they can. They, they just put their first traveling event on.
- 49:15Tad Eggleston: Their renowned Calvin and Hobbes exhibit is currently…
- 49:21Tad Eggleston: through December 31st at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York. So, one can go see Calvin and Hobbs and the Baseball Hall of Fame in one day now, and I really want to find the time to do that.
- 49:39Phil: sounds like a good doubleheader for you. I was gonna say, do you have a Calvin and Hobbes book club?
- 49:44Tad Eggleston: No, we don't have a Calvin and Hobbs book club, but our last… our last episode of the Comic Strip Book Club, was… was about Calvin and Hobbs.
- 49:53Phil: There we go. Okay. Yeah, Calvin and Hobbes is probably my first favorite comic. Like, I still have core memories of my mom reading me strips of that, it's so good. Yep.
- 50:03Tad Eggleston: Well, then you need to get to the billy, man. They've gotta…
- 50:06Phil: Yeah!
- 50:07Tad Eggleston: I guess some of it's out in New York right now, but, like… Okay.
- 50:11Phil: None of them.
- 50:12Tad Eggleston: Billy's claims to… one of the Billy's claims to fame is that, bill Watterson gave them everything.
- 50:23Phil: Oh, wow.
- 50:26Tad Eggleston: Bill Watterson has famously never sold any of the Calvin and Hobbes art. He has…
- 50:31Phil: for that.
- 50:32Tad Eggleston: He has given it away, but he has not…
- 50:34Tad Eggleston: sold it. The things that he hasn't given away are on permanent loan and… and willed to.
- 50:45Tad Eggleston: the Billy Ireland Museum. So right now, they have everything that he hasn't given away, and essentially the only caveat is he's still allowed to give stuff away while he's alive, but if he doesn't, it's here.
- 51:00Phil: It's, I think… I think Watterson would probably be the biggest possible get for this podcast.
- 51:06Tad Eggleston: Oh, oh god, yes.
- 51:07Phil: I mean, it's… It's…
- 51:10Tad Eggleston: It's hard to imagine.
- 51:11Phil: Yeah, I mean, it's…
- 51:12Tad Eggleston: Not even… No, well, the two big, bill Watterson and Alan Moore are the two…
- 51:21Phil: I'd say more, more…
- 51:22Tad Eggleston: least likely…
- 51:24Tad Eggleston: Huge gets. Alan Moore, actually, and I haven't finished reading it, Michael Cunningham's Elon Musk book came out last week, and Alan Moore gave, like, a substantial blurb on it.
- 51:38Phil: That is…
- 51:39Tad Eggleston: That is…
- 51:40Phil: Exciting.
- 51:41Phil: Heck yeah!
- 51:42Tad Eggleston: I'm about halfway through it, it's really good.
- 51:45Tad Eggleston: Or not Michael Cunning, Daryl Cunningham.
- 51:49Phil: care.
- 51:49Tad Eggleston: Who's… who's another one of the better… Comic journalist type people.
- 51:55Tad Eggleston: Nice. In the business.
- 51:56Phil: Oh, that was… that was the one that he had trouble getting published, right?
- 52:00Tad Eggleston: In the United States, yeah. I gotta, I gotta read that. That was,
- 52:05Tad Eggleston: Like I said, I'm about half…
- 52:06Phil: Daryl. It's really good. Daryl Cunningham. Daryl Cunningham. Okay.
- 52:10Tad Eggleston: Elon Musk, an American oligarch, I think.
- 52:13Phil: Yep. That sounds like a book my dad should read.
- 52:19Tad Eggleston: So… this week, Kid Maroon from Christopher Cantwell and Victor Santos is finally coming out in trade paperback rather than single issue form, but I'll take it, because I've wanted to read this book since before it was even announced, when… when…
- 52:38Tad Eggleston: I got sent a copy of the soon-to-be-released
- 52:44Tad Eggleston: because, I mean, they went all out on this, you know? Chris wrote, like, a crazy…
- 52:51Tad Eggleston: Press release where it was, like, implying that they were
- 52:55Tad Eggleston: Unearthing this old character, so there was, like, all sorts of…
- 53:00Tad Eggleston: references and throwbacks, and it was written in kind of a 40s style. I mean, it, like, I remember laughing out loud when he sent me to that, and just immediately going, please tell me this is real, and not you messing around. He's like, it's both, and I'm like.
- 53:20Phil: The answer we always want.
- 53:22Tad Eggleston: Right, so this will… this will… this will finally… finally see the light of day on… on Wednesday.
- 53:27Tad Eggleston: Lazarus Fallen, number 4 from Gregory and Michael Lark will also see The Light of Day on Wednesday. And, like, those two books I am so excited for that I, like, have to apologize to my good friend Chris Condon, that even with a trifecta of books.
- 53:46Tad Eggleston: coming out.
- 53:48Tad Eggleston: He's in the 3 slot, with Far Down Below number 5, Green Arrow number 28, and News from the Fallout number 4.
- 53:56Tad Eggleston: earns him the 3-spot behind Cantwell and Rockette.
- 54:01Tad Eggleston: Sorry, Chris.
- 54:03Phil: company.
- 54:04Tad Eggleston: Hope you enjoy. You are.
- 54:05Phil: the marble street.
- 54:06Tad Eggleston: And you've got some chance that because you've got 3 books, you could jump in front of one of them.
- 54:13Phil: Playing the numbers game.
- 54:16Tad Eggleston: See?
- 54:21Tad Eggleston: petition this week, Chris.
- 54:23Tad Eggleston: I know that, American Nature Presents No. 3 from Floating World is spectacular this week, and because… and I don't know if this was a glitch or something to…
- 54:34Tad Eggleston: Because it wasn't advertised enough that it would make a particularly great
- 54:41Tad Eggleston: Easter egg for beta testers of Neon Inchiban, but I'm one of the invite beta testers in Neon Inchiban, and I was able to buy a digital copy of Wonder Woman number 25 this week, rather…
- 54:56Phil: Come on. Excuse me.
- 54:57Tad Eggleston: So, I have read it, it is fantastic. You should go read it, too.
- 55:04Phil: There we go. Back to our access.
- 55:06Tad Eggleston: couple of, really fantastic books are collected this week, Challenger of the Unknown from Christopher Cantwell and Sean Isaacs, Metamorpho from the
- 55:20Tad Eggleston: The Element Man from Ali Ewing and Steve Lieber, and Supergirl Universe End from Mariko Tamaki and Skylar Patridge, as well as a… a,
- 55:30Tad Eggleston: collection of one of my favorite currently running comic strips, which is Never Been Deader, The Lifeless Carl and a Not-So-Sweet Embrace of Death. It's essentially like a place where hell is the office.
- 55:44Phil: Oh, that does sound fun.
- 55:47Tad Eggleston: I don't know if it actually even defines it as hell. The afterlife is the office.
- 55:51Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 55:53Phil: I… I… I do enjoy… that does sound like quite… quite a fun… and it's funny, because I can imagine a couple of other…
- 56:00Phil: you know, there was a show, and I think there was…
- 56:03Phil: I think it was called The Life After. There was a Joshua Hale Fjalkov book from Oni, I want to say? It wasn't quite that mundane, but no, I'd read a bunch of different things with that tagline. That sounds like a lot of fun.
- 56:19Phil: Alright.
- 56:20Phil: Next up, alright, I didn't know if you were gonna go to graphic novels or not, but yeah, so…
- 56:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:24Tad Eggleston: There's interesting stuff, but not anything that I need to, like, say anything about until I've read it.
- 56:30Phil: Understandable. My giant-sized trade waiter graphic novel pick of the week is the Monstrous Compendium trade paperback from Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda Image Comics.
- 56:42Phil: Especially because this is a… this is serving as a reminder to me to get caught up on Monstrous, as I'd love to still talk about the new volume of that when it comes out.
- 56:51Tad Eggleston: It is all on Hoopla.
- 56:53Phil: Exactly.
- 56:54Tad Eggleston: As I would bet the compendium will be, and if the compendium is, it means that you can get it for one borrow.
- 57:02Phil: Yes, I looked at it. Unfortunately, my hoopla doesn't have a compendium, it just… because I think there was a hardcover compendium, or at least some sort of hardcover collecting multiple volumes, because I'm pretty sure I read…
- 57:13Phil: I read one of those, because I've read about the first three trades of monsters, I think.
- 57:19Phil: But, I'm also excited for Lazarus Fallen number 4, from Monsieur's Ruckylarch, Arcus, and Mayer.
- 57:27Phil: And of course, I'm still reading The Voice Said Kill by, Cy Spurrier, Vanessa Del Rey. I think it's Jonathan Starr and Hassan Atzmin El-Hao. Thank you for the spelling assists this morning, Tad. I would have gotten there phonetically if… if not, if not spelling-wise.
- 57:45Phil: But yeah, those are… Those are, single issues I'm looking forward to.
- 57:51Tad Eggleston: Alright, I gotta sort out my day, including going and picking up business cards from the printer for one of my friends who's tabling, so I.
- 58:00Phil: That's exciting. I was hoping they were your business cards.
- 58:03Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, I have my business cards.
- 58:06Phil: Oh, awesome.
- 58:07Tad Eggleston: Kelly made new ones, even.
- 58:09Tad Eggleston: Kelly made new ones.
- 58:15Phil: Oh, ho ho, I love that! Oh, listeners, that has… is the 22 Panels Tad Eggleston business card, and the image is a striped cat reaching towards a microphone, Eddie in action at his best. I assume that's Eddie, right?
- 58:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 58:33Phil: Yeah.
- 58:36Phil: It's been a minute since I was gonna say, where is Eddie today? And not in the same house as you. Not in the same state as you.
- 58:41Tad Eggleston: he, he, he, he is… In Illinois.
- 58:45Phil: There we go.
- 58:46Tad Eggleston: So…
- 58:47Phil: Yeah.
- 58:48Phil: Cats don't like to travel, unfortunately.
- 59:01Phil: Are you… are you…
- 59:02Tad Eggleston: I'm just looking at a couple text messages, which is why I should really say.
- 59:07Tad Eggleston: And for 22 panels, we will see you after the next page.
