- 0:00It's most things Kenobi and don't try it Anakin.
- 0:03We always. Have the high ground.
- 0:19Hi everyone, welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a
- 0:22podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:26I'm your host, Leanne. And I'm your host, Lauren.
- 0:30This episode we are discussing the adorable, the odd, the
- 0:37respectable relationship between Anakin and Captain Rex.
- 0:42Yes. What did you use to describe it
- 0:45last week? Oh, my gosh, She's an adjective.
- 0:48And one of our patrons was like, I think Rex would not be happy
- 0:52with that. It's like, yeah, but it's true.
- 0:54I don't know. I don't remember what I said.
- 0:57Oh crap. Now I have to go back and think,
- 0:59look, listen to it and try and remember.
- 1:02It was. I can't remember if it was like
- 1:04chaotic or whatever it was, but either way it was an accurate
- 1:08description. They're definitely chaotic, but
- 1:11we love them for it. I, you know, it's interesting
- 1:14because we had just spoken about in in some ways the Cody and Obi
- 1:20Wan relationship and it's a little bit more stoic and, and
- 1:26like professional compared to. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31And if there's if there's little sassy exchanges, it's very small
- 1:35and like understated. Very controlled.
- 1:38Yeah. It doesn't spiral.
- 1:42Which is the opposite. Yeah, yeah, I, I think majority
- 1:49of people, I don't know a single person who doesn't like Rex.
- 1:52You know, everyone likes him in one manner or another.
- 1:57Some aspect of Rex people love and have grown to love him over
- 2:02the years and his various appearances as Star Wars media
- 2:06continues. Even after Anakin is removed
- 2:09from the picture, Rex stands on his own.
- 2:12But before any of that there was Anakin and Rex and and Ahsoka.
- 2:17Of course, like Ahsoka and Rex are a whole other chaotic, but I
- 2:23actually really love their relationship.
- 2:25It's it's sweet. I do too.
- 2:28It develops into something I think that's very deeply
- 2:31meaningful, especially after season 7.
- 2:33How do you go through that and not make like a deep trauma bond
- 2:38with with each other? And their hug in in Rebels is
- 2:42just love it. So wonderful.
- 2:44I don't know, I just love all of it, but.
- 2:46Yeah. Anakin and Rex.
- 2:50Do you think Rex had? I don't remember, but do you
- 2:52think he'll show up in the season 2 of Ahsoka?
- 2:56God, I wish. He's got to write when?
- 2:59I mean they're showing the ghost crew and Rex is not officially
- 3:03part of their crew but he's work with them so that would be so
- 3:08awesome. I really, really hope so.
- 3:12I really do. Even just to see Tim with a
- 3:17shaved or somewhat shaved head like in the Rex, the Rex way of
- 3:23things, you know? Yeah, Oh my God, I'd love how
- 3:27Rex is really sassy. He actually is quite sassy.
- 3:33If you. Yes.
- 3:34Deep dive back into his Clone Wars stuff.
- 3:37Even season 1 there was some reference where I think it's
- 3:42season 1 where they're dealing with the the rookies on the
- 3:44outpost, I think. I think that's this episode.
- 3:48Oh it is 'cause he, he pretends to be one of the droids,
- 3:54remember? And he like holds the the head
- 3:56up to the camera and he's. I just love that they gave him a
- 4:02bit of a sense of humor cause all the clones have their own
- 4:05personalities. But Rex to me is funny but warm,
- 4:10but also a total fucking badass. Absolutely.
- 4:14I I And that's the reason why I think he works so well with
- 4:18Anakin, because before any of Anakin's fall, he's also sassy,
- 4:25light hearted, warm, affectionate in a way that he
- 4:28knows like, and it works really well with Rex.
- 4:31And I think they found a common ground.
- 4:33I mean my favorite Anakin Rex moment is in the Point Rain
- 4:38series of episodes where they're on top of that wall, him and
- 4:41Anakin Anakin in Ahsoka and they just throw him over and control
- 4:46dive down and then. I wanted to ask you about that
- 4:51moment. It's kind of a weirdly
- 4:54controversial moment. I I hadn't ever thought of it
- 4:58that way. But then if you go on Tumblr,
- 5:00you know, because Tumblr is full of outrage, OK.
- 5:07People were saying that that was terrible for Anakin to do that
- 5:11to Rex, it was like, violating body autonomy, throwing him off
- 5:16a wall without asking his permission first, like taking
- 5:19it. Well, no account of whether or
- 5:21not that would scare Rex. And are we overthinking a
- 5:25cartoon here? Maybe, yes.
- 5:27Yeah. But still, I'm curious what you
- 5:29think about it. Well, I see both sides.
- 5:31I see. OK, We have to remember that
- 5:33this is war. They're there to different
- 5:37decisions are made, right? And I can see where Anakin's
- 5:42coming from, like with not asking him.
- 5:44Because if you give, if you know your subject and you give them a
- 5:49minute to think about it, they're going to say no.
- 5:51And then you'll disregard that choice and throw them over
- 5:55anyway. So might as well just wipe that
- 5:57part out and throw them over anyway.
- 5:59You're going to be. He's going to be OK.
- 6:01Anakin would never put him in harm's way.
- 6:05Yeah. So there's a level of trust
- 6:07there, perhaps still developing, but it's still there.
- 6:12That was one of those moments where they created some trust, I
- 6:16guess. Right.
- 6:17But I mean, Ahsoka also went over the edge like it it was
- 6:20necessary in order for this to take place, like for them to be
- 6:23safe or whatever. But in any other circumstance, I
- 6:28would say yeah, give the person a choice please.
- 6:31And I feel like Anakin's motto is asked forgiveness, not
- 6:34permission. Yeah, exactly.
- 6:37Which should come as no surprise to anyone in his near vicinity
- 6:42or under his command. That was kind of the thing about
- 6:44Anakin and Rex. It was well at Skywalker, you
- 6:48know, Is Skywalker leading us? OK, well, get ready.
- 6:52You know, it became a a bit of a reputation, if you will.
- 6:56I agree. Yeah, I also think that both
- 6:59Anakin and Obi Wan wouldn't ask their soldiers to do anything
- 7:03that they wouldn't do themselves.
- 7:05However, Anakin's measurement of what's acceptable is way
- 7:10different. The baseline there is far
- 7:13adjusted compared to Obi Wan but also at this time had Anakin not
- 7:20turned I think he would have grown up and eventually stopped
- 7:26that. You know what I mean?
- 7:27Like there were more yeah there would have been more Obi Wan
- 7:30influence there. I mean cuz look at Ahsoka, she
- 7:33also mellowed out. Remember the time where she
- 7:37would not listen to Obi Wan's commands?
- 7:39She was out fighting and she disregarded his commands.
- 7:44I don't think she would do that in the here and now.
- 7:46You know? So a lot of it can be attributed
- 7:48to to youth. Yeah, I I definitely agree.
- 7:52It's it's interesting though. I feel like we see more moments
- 7:56where Ahsoka grows than Anakin growing.
- 8:00I feel like Anakin is obviously changing.
- 8:04He definitely, and even Matt Lanter said that he changed
- 8:07specifically the way he used his voice.
- 8:08As Anakin got older, he deepened his voice with calmer.
- 8:13But we see Ahsoka learning lessons and changing and I feel
- 8:18like Anakin is more resistant sometimes.
- 8:21He is more certain that he's right and.
- 8:25Well I was going to say he becomes more arrogant as he gets
- 8:29older. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:31Which effectively halts growth. Right, That's a great point.
- 8:37I see. Though at the same time, Rex,
- 8:41Rex grows too, but he grows more like how do we, how do I
- 8:46describe it? Like he becomes a more
- 8:48independent thinker, you know what I mean?
- 8:53In I think he's at season 2 where he meets Cut Laquaine.
- 8:59Is that his name? Cut Laquaine, Which one's that?
- 9:02The guy who was a trooper and basically.
- 9:06Got married and. Had when?
- 9:08When he Well, yeah, and had a family.
- 9:11He went off the grid. He's the one that went to Alaska
- 9:14and lived off the grid. I don't blame.
- 9:20Him. He's in Bad Batch later and
- 9:22helps Rex. Later, I think I I knew that.
- 9:25Yeah, yeah. That's nice.
- 9:26But in that episode he is challenging Rex a lot about his
- 9:30ideals with being a clone first of all and serving because
- 9:36they're told to serve without a choice to serve.
- 9:39And Rex keeps saying no. I'm like, I I would still choose
- 9:43this even if I was given a choice.
- 9:46And then later when you see him in the Umbara arc, that's where
- 9:52you see Rex really having to stand by his own ideas, whether
- 9:58or not he's being told something.
- 10:01Like, I was like, what is his name?
- 10:03But then I remembered, fuck Pong Krell.
- 10:04Fuck Pong. Krell bitch.
- 10:07Help me remember the name. Go to hell pong you and all your
- 10:147 waddling chins fucker. Oh my God, no.
- 10:22It's good. But Punkrel is challenging Rex a
- 10:28lot because he's not only an authority figure, he's a Jedi,
- 10:35and Rex has to decide for his men and for himself.
- 10:39That is such a great arc. We should do it someday on this
- 10:43show. It's just really heavy.
- 10:45It is heavy. There'll be a lot of cursing in
- 10:49my part, but I find it interesting that whole thing,
- 10:54this really, that arc defines Rex because Anakin is removed
- 10:59right away from the situation, which if we ever do a deep dive
- 11:05into this arc that I want to talk about why he was removed,
- 11:09how he was removed, why he left all this stuff.
- 11:13Like that's interesting. But Rex, I would follow him no
- 11:19questions asked based on his behavior in those episodes.
- 11:23I feel for those clones so much. I think we all do.
- 11:26It's just a terrible and a real life play out of of a situation.
- 11:31But what's interesting about that is that pawn Crail is
- 11:34obviously larger, taller, higher in rank, everything else and Rex
- 11:39stands his ground. And I think had Anakin not gone
- 11:47the way he did, he would have been like that as a as a leader,
- 11:51he was already showing signs that he could be.
- 11:54He went his own way, but that usually worked out like it
- 11:58usually he he did what he believed in.
- 12:01It was tarnished a little bit. I have to say everything with a
- 12:04caveat because it's Anakin, but like the leader part, yeah, the
- 12:08leader part of Anakin, him and Rex are, are very similar.
- 12:14But Rex has that. He has that clone, duh, 'cause
- 12:18he's a clone, but he has that clone respectability of like,
- 12:21they will fight and stand and believe in everything.
- 12:26And that's the thing that never wavers with Rex.
- 12:28Never. He's loyal, doesn't matter who
- 12:30it's to. Yeah.
- 12:33And it's really important. Do you think he stepped into
- 12:35that more because he saw Anakin doing it all the time or do you
- 12:40think like especially in in Barra specifically, do you think
- 12:44that was just how Rex is? I think it's just how Rex is.
- 12:49But I do think, I mean, there's, this is what I wanted to talk
- 12:52about too. There's the moments where he
- 12:56questionably knows about Padme and Anakin.
- 13:01And that's a different type of loyalty because that could be, I
- 13:05mean, we talked about it with Obi Wan too.
- 13:08Everyone kind of knew, but nobody said anything and kind of
- 13:11let it go. Yeah.
- 13:14That was where I I think like it made Rex a little uncomfortable,
- 13:18but he wasn't going to betray a friend.
- 13:20So there's a friend aspect there.
- 13:22Like he respected Anakin and like, I don't know, there's a
- 13:25weird thing about did the clones have crushes?
- 13:27Like like how did that work? Did he understand?
- 13:32I, I, I don't want to belittle the clones by asking that
- 13:36question, but we really don't see that side of them.
- 13:39They loved each other like brothers, but there's no
- 13:41romantic like where they, I hate to say this, were they bred that
- 13:44way? I don't know, because like,
- 13:46technically they're they're only like 7 years old when they're
- 13:51like, so this this territory gets really sticky if you get
- 13:56into it because they are adults, because they're they're quote,
- 14:01UN quote, designed by the Caminoans to develop faster.
- 14:07But but that's what does that mean?
- 14:09Yeah. You know, like there is no real
- 14:12answer to that. I don't know.
- 14:14I don't know. But I do feel like that was
- 14:18Anakin not being a good friend to Rex.
- 14:21No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 14:23no. It was reversed.
- 14:25That was selfish on Anakin's part, expecting way too much of
- 14:29everybody, way too much. But they on the other side, they
- 14:33still gave it to him. So I do think that that's why
- 14:36Rex is just Rex, because I don't know if Cody would have felt.
- 14:39I don't know if Cody would have gone for this shit.
- 14:42Maybe like one time and then after that Cody be like, we're
- 14:46not doing this anymore. But no, Rex is super loyal to
- 14:49Anakin. Anakin knows that.
- 14:51Anakin takes advantage of that. Not good.
- 14:55It's not fair to keep putting a friend in that situation over
- 14:59and over. And Rex Stevens.
- 15:01In. Season 7, he's like, we don't
- 15:03have time for that, Sir. And Anakin's like we're making
- 15:07time for it just so he can go have a phone call with his his
- 15:11secret wife. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's, it's
- 15:13actually pretty fucked, but. It is kind of like it's funny
- 15:17they they use it as a bit of Comic Relief between Anakin and
- 15:20Rex and then Anakin and Obi Wan when Obi Wan's like, I hope you
- 15:23told Padme I said hello. But they're like Obi Wan and Rex
- 15:29are actually enabling Anakin at the same time.
- 15:33Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But we know Obi Wan's feelings
- 15:36on it, right? There's a lot of depth there.
- 15:39There's a lot of drama, there's a lot of etcetera.
- 15:43That's why I was like, does Rex understand there's just deeper
- 15:48layers with Obi Wan always, as usual.
- 15:54Not saying that Rex is in deep, but you know what I mean?
- 15:56There's all kinds of shit there with Obi Wan but.
- 15:58Yeah. I I don't know, do you think Rex
- 16:01is just Rex or did he have influence from it?
- 16:04It's hard to say that he didn't have influence from Anakin, but
- 16:07he is his own person. I think that, I mean, that's
- 16:10going to happen no matter who you are.
- 16:12The people you are around will impact you somehow in some form.
- 16:18I don't know. When you see Anakin, Ahsoka and
- 16:21Rex, they kind of grow together into this amalgamation, and it's
- 16:27interesting to see how they all change and change in a way that
- 16:32makes them all fit together like a puzzle really well.
- 16:35And that does end up serving Ahsoka and Rex really well in
- 16:39the future. Anakin, because everyone was
- 16:42kind of enabling him and turning a blind eye to his really red
- 16:48flag warning signs. Yeah.
- 16:51As we've. I think we even did an episode,
- 16:53didn't we? Yeah.
- 16:54I was just thinking of it. It's so good.
- 16:56Go back and listen to that one. If you've never heard it, it's a
- 16:58good one. Yeah, so the fact that they're
- 17:01always turning a blind eye to that made it more and more
- 17:05possible for him to become arrogant and to have the, yeah,
- 17:09the Super sad stuff happened later.
- 17:12Yeah, I do think that Rex was, I think there was more influence
- 17:17between Rex and Ahsoka than there was Anakin and Rex, which
- 17:21is interesting because we're actually talking about Anakin
- 17:23and Rex. But we've we said we can't not
- 17:27talk about Ahsoka being a part of this.
- 17:30And their story continues. And it's like their leader
- 17:34bailed, their leader left them. And that leaves those two
- 17:40subjects in a difficult and fascinating position.
- 17:44How do we go on, even though they didn't know at the time
- 17:49when they were forced to move on?
- 17:50Right. Do we know if Rex ever found
- 17:54out? I was just going to ask you
- 17:56that. Oh, twins.
- 17:59We don't have a script for this, folks.
- 18:01We just talk. I mean, we know that Ahsoka has
- 18:07that moment in Rebels. Yeah.
- 18:09At first she feels him kind of like something familiar when
- 18:13they're flying near each other, I believe.
- 18:15And then when they're fighting, she knows for sure what
- 18:19happened, that that is what happened to Anakin.
- 18:23I don't remember Rebels well enough.
- 18:26I know we have some listeners to Kevin.
- 18:28Can you help me out here? Yeah, I don't remember if
- 18:32there's a moment where Rex finds out, and I would assume it would
- 18:36be Ahsoka telling him, because how else would he?
- 18:39Know how could what would that conversate that would be a great
- 18:42if it hasn't. I don't think it's happened.
- 18:44I really don't because it's hard for me to remember Rebels too
- 18:47because it's been so long since I've watched like it through.
- 18:51But I don't think but they should talk if that ever if Rex
- 18:55I'm stumbling over my words. If Rex ever shows up in the
- 18:59Ahsoka series, that could be a conversation.
- 19:01Especially since she's just had a moment with yes, force ghost
- 19:06Anakin. That could be really good story
- 19:09building, character furthering, etcetera.
- 19:13Yeah. Doesn't Rex run by in that
- 19:17episode? Like when in her memory or
- 19:20whatever? Yeah, I thought so.
- 19:22Yeah. Or they at least put his voice.
- 19:25Yeah, go. It's him.
- 19:27His helmet was there. It was this.
- 19:29Specific. Okay.
- 19:30Yeah. I've only watched it once, I
- 19:31need to go back and watch it again.
- 19:33Ma'am, once. Yeah, sorry.
- 19:39I know, ma'am. Don't come for me.
- 19:42I know, I'm sorry. It was OK, I mean that episode
- 19:47was fucking awesome, but like the show was.
- 19:49I had a whole I had a whole stroke, heart attack and
- 19:52cardiac, full cardiac arrest. We have your recording of you
- 19:56screaming as. We know.
- 20:02Sorry. Oh my God, I will watch it again
- 20:05if there's ever. Going to be as whatever you
- 20:07want. I'm just, I'm just being a troll
- 20:10over here. Well, I I'm that person who like
- 20:14we got it and I still wish it was Obi Wan instead.
- 20:17So I'm. Sorry listen I was waiting for
- 20:20Obi Wan to run by and he never did and I'm still not OK with
- 20:23it. So I'm with you, I am with you.
- 20:25It would have taken 2 seconds. It would have killed all of us
- 20:29though. Like we'd have died and Disney
- 20:30would have had no more fans to pay for their features so.
- 20:34They'd still be trying to resuscitate half of us.
- 20:41Who's going to watch Andor try harder resuscitate?
- 20:45Well, I'll come back from the dead to watch Andor.
- 20:48I'll do that. Hell yeah.
- 20:49And then I'll die again. She is risen anyway.
- 20:58Sorry, you were saying? I have these like guilty
- 21:05pleasure conversations I really wished we could have.
- 21:08I want to see Rex find out about Anakin and we did finally see
- 21:14Obi Wan find out about Anakin as Vader.
- 21:17That was great. I want to see Obi Wan figuring
- 21:21out something about Cody. I don't know but we never
- 21:24addressed that. Like I know when revenge of this
- 21:27has happened, Clone wars didn't exist yet but we got how many
- 21:30fucking seasons of Obi Wan and Cody becoming this awesome team.
- 21:36Cody shoots him off a wall. Yeah.
- 21:39And we've never, ever come back to that ever again.
- 21:43The friendship is just never mentioned.
- 21:45And that's that. It's like.
- 21:47What? I want to also know about Rex
- 21:49and Cody. I know, I know.
- 21:53I really love the whole final Mandalore arc in season 7.
- 21:58It's very hard to watch. It makes me very sad.
- 22:03It does. It's heavy.
- 22:04It's really heavy. It's really heavy, but it's very
- 22:08excellent. And the whole thing with Ahsoka
- 22:11saving Rex and, you know, she gets to say the I am one with
- 22:16the Force, the Force is with me or whatever and like, takes the
- 22:19chip out of Rex's head or fries at whatever they do, I don't
- 22:22remember. But like, that whole sequence is
- 22:25incredible. And I'm really glad they did
- 22:27that and rescued Rex and didn't let him become the thing he
- 22:32would have despised, you know? Yeah, I don't I it killed.
- 22:35Him Cody did become that thing like.
- 22:38I know. We need more.
- 22:41We do. We need that conversation would
- 22:44be hard to watch. I would cry.
- 22:45Yeah. Like it's two sides.
- 22:48Yeah, exactly. It would be as painful.
- 22:53It's almost like Obi Wan and Anakin.
- 22:56Yeah. It's two sides of one coin.
- 22:59You become the thing you promised you wouldn't.
- 23:03Yeah. That element and it's, that's
- 23:06very sad. That's what makes Ahsoka and Rex
- 23:09so unique. Yes.
- 23:11They fought through that, literally and figuratively,
- 23:16yeah. And they were faced with kind of
- 23:18their worst case scenarios, especially in that season 7.
- 23:23Yeah. He was telling her they're going
- 23:26to kill you so we only have the choice of fighting.
- 23:30That means he has to kill his brothers.
- 23:32And she's being faced with turning against the people who
- 23:36have supported her and and like 4 episodes ago had painted their
- 23:40helmets to look like her. And she has to say I'm not going
- 23:45to hurt anyone. We're going to have to find
- 23:47another way. Like the whole heaviness of all
- 23:50that is classic Star Wars, and I really is so much.
- 23:58Well, it's so symbolic too. It's not a slow thing.
- 24:01They literally flip a switch and they're different than what
- 24:05you've always known. That is traumatizing.
- 24:09You don't have time to think or reason through it.
- 24:13And that goes for Rex as well. So they have to make a game time
- 24:17decision and that the conversation of they are not the
- 24:22people we know. They are not the person that we
- 24:24knew Anakin. That erases any loyalty, any
- 24:30prior love or affection or respect that was there.
- 24:35And you have to move forward with that.
- 24:36And that is tough. I can't do that.
- 24:40So when faced with a decision like that, it might be easier
- 24:44but to be left afterwards, like when they they put the helmets
- 24:48up, they fall to that ice planet and.
- 24:50You literally just got goosebumps, Yeah.
- 24:52Like the graveyard of helmets that is so symbolic of
- 24:57everything that changed. That's it.
- 25:00A part of them died. A part of their past is dead.
- 25:03It's fucked and it's beautiful. Yeah, Star Wars is pain.
- 25:09But like, Rex never changed. He went forward with heaviness
- 25:13in his heart, but he stayed true to himself, which is something
- 25:16that Anakin can't say until fucking Luke shows up.
- 25:20But like, you know what I mean? Like there's, there's always.
- 25:24I respect the hell out of Rex. Bottom line.
- 25:26Yeah. And as we're talking about this,
- 25:29it's just kind of making me see Anakin is a ripple effect of
- 25:34pain, like he's terrible, passed his trauma on to Padme, who he
- 25:39killed, I guess. And then by default, Luke and
- 25:44Leia carrying this like deep soul wound without even knowing
- 25:48where it comes from. Ahsoka, Rex, I'll be 1 like
- 25:52this. It just spreads into these
- 25:55people's lives where after Anakin turns or disappears or
- 25:59whatever to them because I guess some of them thought he just
- 26:03died in Order 66. Yeah.
- 26:05There's all these people trying to deal with an extreme amount
- 26:10of trauma and pain, all while not being safe physically in
- 26:16this new empire. This is nuts.
- 26:20This is the kind of shit that gives people a nervous breakdown
- 26:23and just. Yeah, just.
- 26:24Put me in a little chair facing a mountain and put a little
- 26:28blanket on my lap and feed me soup because I'm.
- 26:31Rocker gently, people. Yeah, I'm destroyed like this
- 26:36just would ruin me as a person. I love what you just said
- 26:40though. All because of like this one.
- 26:42You could say it was Palpatine too.
- 26:44I mean it all kind of goes back to Palpatine.
- 26:46But yes, I'm not. I'm not trying to defend Anakin.
- 26:49It begs the question, with the amount of ripple effect that
- 26:53Anakin had, was it actually the wills?
- 26:57Because it's so the magnitude of it is so huge.
- 27:00Remember how we always come back to, was it fate or was it, yeah,
- 27:04some kind of destiny? Was it really like as Qui Gon
- 27:07thought, you know, the whole prophecy and this, that and the
- 27:10other? Yeah.
- 27:11Like, because it's a huge magnitude of terribleness.
- 27:16I know, and it affects generations, as you see.
- 27:20I don't know personally what I believe about fate.
- 27:25Me neither. I I don't know.
- 27:27I know like the Puritans for example believed everything was
- 27:30preordained. So what's the point?
- 27:32In my opinion? You know, if it's preordained.
- 27:35I try. Yeah, to me, I I feel less
- 27:39inclined to believe in fate. However, I know that George
- 27:42Lucas wrote some of this stuff really intending it to be fate
- 27:47because it's based on Greek mythology, right?
- 27:50And like, they believed in fate, at least the the myths imply.
- 27:55Who knows? We weren't there.
- 27:56We we weren't there in real time.
- 27:59We don't know what they really believed.
- 28:00But I think that a lot of the myths play with the idea of
- 28:04fate. And even if it's not like
- 28:07everything about your life is ordained a specific spot on the
- 28:11map, you know, and in your journey that's going to happen.
- 28:14And I just think of it. Was it Oedipus that killed his
- 28:19own father by accident? I can't.
- 28:22I always get Oedipus and Odysseus mixed up in my head.
- 28:25But. One of Oedipus is the one that
- 28:26liked his mom, right? Right.
- 28:29But there was something about it where in the myth he learned as
- 28:32a young man that he would murder his own father.
- 28:35And he was like, well, I don't want to do that.
- 28:36So he went off and traveled and made himself as far away as
- 28:43possible. So that could never happen.
- 28:44And as he was journeying on the road, he met an old man or
- 28:47something, got in a fight and killed him.
- 28:49And it turned out that was his father and he just didn't know
- 28:52it. So by trying to avoid fate, he
- 28:54actually walked into fate. Well, that's like Anakin and and
- 28:59he saw all of it exactly just like pieced out and left it and
- 29:02said, you know. By the very act of trying to
- 29:06avoid the thing, he made the thing.
- 29:07Because like with Padme, right, trying to save her to avoid the
- 29:12heartbreak is what created the heartbreak and the desperation.
- 29:16Yeah. I find that very interesting but
- 29:19also very exhausting. Like the idea of that being life
- 29:23is way too heavy for me to live with.
- 29:27Like in my mind. But if you're writing it, it is
- 29:32a black because. You it's a thinking circle.
- 29:34The circle never ends. Exactly.
- 29:37And then it's like, whoa, how does Ahsoka play?
- 29:39And how does Rex play it? And then you start to like, rip
- 29:42your hair out because I don't know how this all ties together.
- 29:46It makes the story super big and complex and heavy and like
- 29:50bloated, but I still think the I like having the germ of the idea
- 29:57that it's fate makes it interesting and that's as much
- 30:01as I need to go into it. Then the rest of it is just fun
- 30:06and interesting and complex. I don't know, like if the wills
- 30:12intended to ruin all these lives because as we're seeing now,
- 30:17like with Ahsoka is showing us, you know, post Return of the
- 30:22Jedi World, it's not ideal. It's not like everyone's lives
- 30:28got better. And that's the truth about
- 30:29revolution, folks. Yes, you have a revolution.
- 30:33You're going to have bloody mess for a long time, like
- 30:36generations after it. So I don't know, you think about
- 30:42it, I'm, I'm like definitely talking myself into a quagmire
- 30:46here. I don't know.
- 30:48Well, that's what Star Wars is, yeah.
- 30:50It's just, yeah, Whenever we talk about these, these
- 30:53characters, you have to consider these angles, though, because
- 30:58it's what it really is, is it's very painful.
- 31:01And we're trying to find a reason why.
- 31:03We're trying to figure out why so fucking painful.
- 31:07Not all of it was bad. Anakin and Rex, I think they
- 31:11really respected each other. I do too.
- 31:14I think there was deep friendship there.
- 31:16There was, it's sad. And again, everybody that Anakin
- 31:23loved, he betrayed, including Padme.
- 31:28And himself. Well, yeah, first and foremost
- 31:32because there was good in there and he turned from it for that's
- 31:36that's his free choice right there.
- 31:38Whether the the wills ended up kind of puppet stringing or not,
- 31:43we always do have a choice, right Question mark.
- 31:49I don't know what the MIDI glorians think.
- 31:51Yeah, fuck that. OK, and pong Crow, but like.
- 31:56Yeah, our new motto is fuck the MIDI Glorian.
- 32:00Season 2, fuck the MIDI. Glorian doesn't quite have the
- 32:05bite. It doesn't pong crawled.
- 32:08But. But we have questions about all
- 32:11of this, and it's very sad. Yeah, because OK, say he doesn't
- 32:16have free choice. That's really fucking sad.
- 32:20It is because now all of these people are affected by this lack
- 32:24of free choice. Right.
- 32:27And they have to then deal with it.
- 32:29And to think that he's suffering that much because Anakin does
- 32:33suffer. He does.
- 32:36His whole life is suffering and trying to get away from the
- 32:41suffering or trying to trump the suffering and that leads to more
- 32:45suffering. It's disgusting.
- 32:47So if that is preordained that you were born to suffer.
- 32:52Yeah, that sucks. That's really sad.
- 32:55And that, I mean, that can kind of like tie into the clones as
- 33:00well because they all say we were born to fight.
- 33:03We were born to die in the name of this war that was made-up.
- 33:08Yeah. And why we were created.
- 33:10That's terrible. Yeah.
- 33:12And so to see those two characters who are like quote,
- 33:15UN quote, preordained, let's say to see their paths and then they
- 33:20diverge like drastically, it's pretty interesting to to see,
- 33:25granted, Rex didn't have the childhood trauma or a childhood
- 33:30for, for that matter. True.
- 33:33That Anakin had. And so we this has become a
- 33:37whole episode of nature versus nurture.
- 33:40I don't know. It has to be.
- 33:42It has to be talked about in this sense though.
- 33:45Yeah. With Anakin and Rex, it's very
- 33:48interesting because Anakin had a much more quote UN quote normal
- 33:54upbringing in the sense of he's not a clone.
- 33:58Right. And then Rex is brought up as a
- 34:02clone with very specific points in his life that he has to reach
- 34:07because that's why he was bred, and Rex ends up becoming more of
- 34:13a good human than Anakin. Right.
- 34:17And if the Irene is yeah. So.
- 34:22That's crazy, man. That's the thing about Anakin
- 34:25and Rex that fascinates me, is the fact that they are They're
- 34:30so similar, but they're so opposite.
- 34:34Yeah. And they're opposite when it
- 34:36where it really counts. Yeah, yeah, Rex is completely
- 34:40selfless. Yeah, totally opposite of
- 34:43Anakin. Anakin is selfish.
- 34:46He has great moments of selflessness, yes, that.
- 34:50That's why he is a hero like he really is.
- 34:52But he has a string of selfishness that is his his
- 34:57downfall, basically. His selfless moments he wanted
- 35:00credit for. That's great point.
- 35:03Thus perpet perpetuating the ego and the selfishness it was he
- 35:10thought he was owed something for that because of some it.
- 35:14Just makes me think for The Simpsons, where Homer Simpson
- 35:19wants to be thanked, he's just like, I like being thanked.
- 35:24I mean, yes, I mean, who doesn't?
- 35:27But like Anakin, like, thought he deserved it.
- 35:31Yeah, like I deserve to be made master or whatever because of XY
- 35:36and Z. Well, you don't.
- 35:37No one owes you anything first of all, and your attitude isn't
- 35:40going to help. Yeah, Oh, they're fun
- 35:43complexity. I I think they're so
- 35:46entertaining and they have that deep brotherhood and friendship.
- 35:50And that's why we get really invested.
- 35:52And that's why it's so deeply devastating when it all goes
- 35:57wrong at the end. It's the same as with Obi Wan.
- 36:00It's like you grow with these characters together.
- 36:03And after watching Clone Wars, Revenge of the Sith and the Obi
- 36:07Wan series is 100 times more devastating now.
- 36:11Who who knew it could be right? Here we are.
- 36:17Didn't know it could get much worse.
- 36:20But to end on a happy note, I really do.
- 36:21I do love their entertainment. I love the relationship that was
- 36:25given to us so that the pain hits harder.
- 36:29That's Star Wars. I don't.
- 36:30Think there's any moment either where that friendship with
- 36:34Anakin and Rex gets challenged? I don't think there's a moment
- 36:38where they're butting heads. I don't recall one.
- 36:41If it is, it's very minor. Yeah, like maybe about Echo, I
- 36:46think in season 7, Oh, Padme is saying Rex trusts you all the
- 36:50time. You need to trust Rex now.
- 36:53But before that, like, how many years have they been together?
- 36:56And it's just in step with each other.
- 36:59Yeah, complete trust because of what they've done for each other
- 37:02on the battlefield. I mean, it's pretty incredible.
- 37:05It is incredible, sad, incredible and incredibly sad.
- 37:16Thanks a lot, Star Wars. So our next episode is gonna be
- 37:28all about the skeleton crew cuz it comes out on December 3rd. 2
- 37:33episodes are being released on that day.
- 37:35So we will watch and review and see where it goes.
- 37:39So join us, we're gonna our next new show to watch and.
- 37:43In our last episode we were talking about the original
- 37:48concept for the Kenobi series, the original script, and we
- 37:51asked our listeners how they felt about Cody.
- 37:54Would they have liked to see Cody in the Kenobi series?
- 37:57And Anna Grace, a tortured poet, said I would love for Cody to
- 38:04come back, but only if done right.
- 38:07I would love the Cody holding a knife to Obi Wan's throat,
- 38:10telling him to be careful. But I'd rather have no Cody than
- 38:13have them ruin him. Amen.
- 38:16Yes. And that was kind of the general
- 38:19consensus. We had other people message me
- 38:21and write in saying the same thing.
- 38:23Like, yes, I would love to see Cody.
- 38:25That'd be awesome. But please don't ruin anything.
- 38:29Yeah, yeah, yeah. You got to tread delicately with
- 38:32that one, because you will have a revolt.
- 38:35Yes, yes, an uprising. But thank you for writing in
- 38:41Anna. We appreciate it.
