- 0:00Speaker 1: And the kraken a power play goal welcome to the
- 0:03Speaker 1: kraken post game show powered by the iheart radio app
- 0:07Speaker 1: where you can hear the kraken anytime anywhere now for
- 0:11Speaker 1: an in-depth look at tonight's kraken game beats the kraken
- 0:14Speaker 1: post game on the global credit union kraken audio network.
- 0:19Speaker 2: We're back inside of climate pledge arena everett fits you
- 0:22Speaker 2: alongside big al ice level Not how they drew it up, partner,
- 0:27Speaker 2: but the Kraken a 4-3 win in a shootout. They
- 0:29Speaker 2: had a 3-0 lead coming into this third period. They
- 0:33Speaker 2: give up three goals, outshot 13-4 in the third. But man,
- 0:38Speaker 2: they put on a heck of a display in overtime.
- 0:41Speaker 2: They had some good looks, some good chances in the shootout.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Philip Grubauer was stellar on the Kraken's way. to snapping
- 0:49Speaker 2: their brief two-game slide. Yeah, just no easy wins in NHL,
- 0:53Speaker 2: are there?
- 0:54Speaker 3: You play against a team that you put up six on,
- 0:57Speaker 3: and you see them less than two weeks later, and
- 1:01Speaker 3: they battle back in the third period and give them
- 1:03Speaker 3: a lot of credit for doing so. This is a
- 1:05Speaker 3: team that's on the ropes right now, and they're looking
- 1:07Speaker 3: to find ways to win, and they almost did here tonight.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Three goals tonight for Seattle. They get the fourth in
- 1:13Speaker 4: the shootout. We've talked about it before.
- 1:15Speaker 2: They're not going to be able to get five or
- 1:17Speaker 2: six goals every other night, but how big of a
- 1:20Speaker 2: win was this? Obviously, you get the win. Any win
- 1:24Speaker 2: in this league is huge, but after a long road trip,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you're back home. Just where would you put the level
- 1:30Speaker 2: of this win?
- 1:31Speaker 3: I mean, listen, if I'm Coach Lane Lambert, I'm telling
- 1:34Speaker 3: the guys, hey, you found a way to win. That's important.
- 1:37Speaker 3: It wasn't the best third period. We've got to talk
- 1:40Speaker 3: a little bit about that. We've got to talk about
- 1:42Speaker 3: giving up two power play goals, maybe even the number
- 1:45Speaker 3: of penalties taken. But at the end of the day,
- 1:47Speaker 3: finding a way to win is the most important thing. So, yeah,
- 1:50Speaker 3: there's definitely stuff to clean up. And I think that's
- 1:53Speaker 3: the mindset of every player on this team, of the
- 1:55Speaker 3: coaches as well, is that there are no perfect games
- 1:58Speaker 3: and they want to continue to get better.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Two goals from the blue line here tonight. Another point
- 2:03Speaker 2: from that bottom six forward group now up to 37
- 2:06Speaker 2: points on the year. From that third and fourth line,
- 2:09Speaker 2: once again, the offense really being spread out here.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 2:13Speaker 3: At the end of the game, I think it was
- 2:15Speaker 3: 13 players with two or more goals. We talk a
- 2:19Speaker 3: lot about the depth of scoring in this team, and
- 2:21Speaker 3: it just isn't a talking point. It's reality, and it's
- 2:25Speaker 3: an important part of the way this team has success.
- 2:27Speaker 5: They've got to be able.
- 2:28Speaker 3: To spread that scoring around because it makes them a
- 2:31Speaker 3: bigger threat.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Against other teams.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Other teams can't target one line or a couple of
- 2:36Speaker 3: guys when you've got depth of scoring up and down
- 2:38Speaker 3: your lineup.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Power play gets on the board. PK allows one on three.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Any special teams thoughts from you, sir?
- 2:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that to stay out of the box,
- 2:46Speaker 3: first of all, is number one. Four penalties or four
- 2:49Speaker 3: power plays is too many. But you've got to clean
- 2:52Speaker 3: that up because there are teams in this league with
- 2:54Speaker 3: much better power plays that will hurt you much deeper
- 2:57Speaker 3: giving four power plays. So that's got to be an
- 2:59Speaker 3: area of attention.
- 3:00Speaker 2: We'll step out for a break, come back, and wrap
- 3:02Speaker 2: up from the press box after this 4-3 shootout win
- 3:05Speaker 2: on the Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network.

- 5:07Speaker 8: Let's go places.
- 5:22Speaker 2: The final time tonight, welcome back inside of Clam and
- 5:25Speaker 2: Pledge Arena alongside Al Kaniski.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Everett Fitzhugh back with you. It's a 4-3 Kraken win
- 5:31Speaker 4: in a shootout.
- 5:32Speaker 2: They snap an 0-1-1 slide their last two games. Get
- 5:38Speaker 2: back in the win column in game one of a
- 5:41Speaker 2: four-game homestand and their first of six of their next
- 5:45Speaker 2: seven here at home.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Yeah, no, listen, this is exactly what you want to
- 5:49Speaker 3: do is– get the, uh, get the homestand going with
- 5:52Speaker 3: two points here tonight. It wasn't the way you drew
- 5:54Speaker 3: it up, but you found a way to win and
- 5:56Speaker 3: you know, you carry that into a Thursday's game.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Any final thoughts, key takeaways from you, buddy?
- 6:00Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 6:00Speaker 3: First of all, uh, the score of the first goal,
- 6:03Speaker 3: I'll take it every time. The Kraken have scored the
- 6:05Speaker 3: first goal for the last five games that got things going.
- 6:08Speaker 3: That was the Sam Miskevich goal back in the first period. Uh,
- 6:12Speaker 3: we talked about blue line scoring Montour and Evans with
- 6:14Speaker 3: two goals tonight as well. And, uh, There are only
- 6:17Speaker 3: two players that have played six or more games this
- 6:20Speaker 3: year that still have zeros in the goal column. And
- 6:24Speaker 3: it comes from the blue line. So I'm looking at you,
- 6:26Speaker 3: Adam Larson and Josh Mara. And then the last thought is, yeah,
- 6:30Speaker 3: not the way you drew it up. And it never is.
- 6:32Speaker 3: You always have a plan going into a game, really.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Does that plan roll out the way you intended and
- 6:37Speaker 3: the guys adjusted and found a way to win? So
- 6:39Speaker 3: that was important. Mama K's three stars tonight. Third star
- 6:43Speaker 3: goes to Mackie Samuskiewicz. He had that first goal of
- 6:46Speaker 3: the game. Second star goes to Brandon Montour.
- 6:48Speaker 5: He had a goal.
- 6:49Speaker 3: He was plus two. Three shots on goal tonight for
- 6:51Speaker 3: number 62. And the number one star, no surprise there,
- 6:54Speaker 3: Bobby McMahon with the shootout winner. Three stars of the
- 6:58Speaker 3: game brought to you by AAA of Washington. We give
- 7:00Speaker 3: you triple the savings, triple the adventures, and triple the

- 7:07Speaker 2: That'll do it for us from CPA. The Kraken, a
- 7:11Speaker 2: 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings. They complete the
- 7:14Speaker 2: season sweep. 2-0 of Detroit. Now they welcome in the

- 7:28Speaker 2: Kraken Hockey Thursday against the Mammoth.
- 7:31Speaker 4: But for now, we go across the street.

- 7:36Speaker 2: you the rest of the way.
- 7:37Speaker 12: And the crowd filing in here for this one after
- 7:40Speaker 12: it was edge of your seat stuff all the way
- 7:43Speaker 12: to the finish line.
- 7:44Speaker 8: Everett Al, thank you very much.
- 7:46Speaker 12: 3-0 lead, not enough to hold off Detroit in regulation,
- 7:49Speaker 12: but enough to get this one into overtime and into
- 7:53Speaker 12: a shootout where.
- 7:54Speaker 8: Bobby McMahon and.
- 7:55Speaker 12: Philip Grubauer ultimately helping take care of business. The Kraken
- 8:00Speaker 12: hold off the Red Wings in sweating-like fashion tonight. 4-3,
- 8:05Speaker 12: your final score as the Kraken sweep the season series
- 8:08Speaker 12: here for the first time since 2022-23 and now have
- 8:12Speaker 12: won two of their first three games on home ice.
- 8:15Speaker 12: It was not easy, and we'll tell you more of
- 8:17Speaker 12: what happened and how it happened here Coming up later

- 12:13Speaker 12: proves it is never over, and the Kraken maybe had
- 12:16Speaker 12: to perspire a little bit more than what they bargained
- 12:18Speaker 12: for here, but eventually they get the last laugh in
- 12:21Speaker 12: a shootout as Bobby McMahon got the go-ahead goal in
- 12:24Speaker 12: the final round, and Philip Grubauer closing out Dylan Larkin
- 12:28Speaker 12: and closing out tonight where it was all about perseverance,
- 12:32Speaker 12: and the Kraken knock off the Red Wings 4-3, the
- 12:35Speaker 12: final in a shootout to sweep the regular season series.
- 12:38Speaker 12: for the first time since 2022 and 23. They get
- 12:42Speaker 12: some depth as far as scoring up front and also
- 12:45Speaker 12: on their back end. Grubauer looking sharp early on, but
- 12:48Speaker 12: also take a lesson learned maybe as far as closing
- 12:51Speaker 12: out games as this one could have been over by
- 12:54Speaker 12: the end of regulation, but the Kraken eventually pick up
- 12:56Speaker 12: the victory here via the shootout. Their record now 6-3-1
- 13:00Speaker 12: with 13 points on the campaign and against Detroit, improve
- 13:04Speaker 12: their record to 6-3-3. The Red Wings fall to threes
- 13:08Speaker 12: across the board. Three wins, three losses, three going into
- 13:12Speaker 12: a shootout. They have now nine points on the season,
- 13:15Speaker 12: opening up their four-game road trip here in Seattle. Again,
- 13:18Speaker 12: Mike Benton with you right back across the street, live
- 13:20Speaker 12: at Tom's Watch Bar. And time now for the highlights
- 13:23Speaker 12: and scoring recap of this crazy night and this Seattle Kraken.
- 13:27Speaker 12: Drive to the Net scoring recap is brought to you
- 13:29Speaker 12: by Toyota of Kirkland. Scored great deals all season long

- 13:43Speaker 12: Well the Kraken had a vision on starting hot out
- 13:46Speaker 12: of the gates. Mackie Samuskevich had this look as far
- 13:50Speaker 12: as the box to check off. A little over six
- 13:52Speaker 12: minutes into period one.
- 13:54Speaker 5: And now the Kraken are back in.
- 13:56Speaker 8: Here comes Stevenson.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Hands it off. Samuskevich fires.
- 13:59Speaker 19: Scores!
- 14:07Speaker 2: It's the return of the Mack!
- 14:09Speaker 4: Macky Samuels-Skevich back home in Seattle on the Kraken. have
- 14:14Speaker 4: a 1-0 lead, 13-15 to play in the first.
- 14:18Speaker 3: A great zone exit, we talk a lot about first passes,
- 14:21Speaker 3: this time out of the zone it's that first pass
- 14:23Speaker 3: goes right to Chandler Stephenson, gets down that left side,
- 14:26Speaker 3: he's got Samiskiewicz trailing behind him, leaves a nice drop
- 14:29Speaker 3: pass to him, creates some interference with the defensemen of Detroit,
- 14:35Speaker 3: Samiskiewicz has lots of time to put this one home,
- 14:38Speaker 3: blocker side, 1-0 Seattle.
- 14:40Speaker 12: Well, after a quiet run recently for the top six
- 14:43Speaker 12: and a switch in the line combinations, apparently it paid
- 14:46Speaker 12: off at 645 as Mackie Samaskevich with his new line
- 14:49Speaker 12: mates helped chip in for a 1-0 lead. And a
- 14:52Speaker 12: nifty player, Samaskevich, was able to dart his way into
- 14:55Speaker 12: the middle and use a screen, beating Daniil Tarasov for
- 14:58Speaker 12: his fourth goal of the season, getting him out of
- 15:00Speaker 12: a four-game goal-scoring drought. Samaskevich getting his fourth goal from
- 15:04Speaker 12: Chandler Stevenson. Made it, 1-0 Kraken, and the early return
- 15:08Speaker 12: showed that they were dialed in from the get-go, out
- 15:11Speaker 12: shooting the Red Wings 9-7 in the first 20 minutes
- 15:15Speaker 12: of this game. The Kraken then with a great chance
- 15:17Speaker 12: to open things up further as they went to a
- 15:20Speaker 12: 5-on-3 after Detroit. Got a too-many-minute-on-the-ice penalty 34 seconds into
- 15:25Speaker 12: the game and then complicated their own matters when Axel
- 15:28Speaker 12: Sandin Pelika threw the puck over his own defensive zone glass.
- 15:31Speaker 12: That's a penalty, two minutes for delay of game. And
- 15:34Speaker 12: the Kraken falling short on the five-on-three, but what could
- 15:38Speaker 12: they do at five-on-four?
- 15:40Speaker 15: Perfect cat in the slot, hands it off, Riker Evans scores!
- 15:50Speaker 15: Riker Evans, all the time in the world, walks into
- 15:55Speaker 15: the high slot, bangs one in.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Bass tear us off, 2-0 Seattle.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I don't know if this will go down as a
- 16:03Speaker 3: power play goal partner, but it was a nice pass
- 16:05Speaker 3: under the corner to Riker Evans.
- 16:06Speaker 5: As you said, tons of time to.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Get his head up, pick his spot. He's got a
- 16:11Speaker 3: second of the year. The Kraken up their second of
- 16:13Speaker 3: the night. They're up 2-0.
- 16:15Speaker 12: Power play goal for the Kraken in three of the
- 16:18Speaker 12: last four meetings against.
- 16:20Speaker 8: The Red Wings.
- 16:20Speaker 12: Indeed put them out to a 2-0 lead. Riker Evans after...
- 16:25Speaker 12: A Detroit giveaway. Pop one right from the slot past Tarasov.
- 16:29Speaker 12: That's his second goal of the season coming at. 322
- 16:32Speaker 12: and a pretty important goal to give the Kraken some
- 16:34Speaker 12: breathing room at that point with Riker Evans on the
- 16:37Speaker 12: board to make it 2-0. But the Kraken trying to
- 16:40Speaker 12: not stop there as they got an offensive zone faceoff.
- 16:44Speaker 12: What could Berkeley Catton do to set up a very
- 16:47Speaker 12: important trigger man on the back end?
- 16:51Speaker 8: Gatton wins a face-off.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Montour scores!
- 17:00Speaker 14: A clean face-off win, left circle, and Brandon Montour steps
- 17:04Speaker 14: into a bomb from the high slot, and the Kraken
- 17:07Speaker 14: kick the field goal.
- 17:08Speaker 4: They're up 3-0 with 3.59 to play in the second.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Starts with a face-off win. Berkley Catten out to Brandon Montour.
- 17:16Speaker 3: A quick shot on net. Brandon Montour's got his first
- 17:19Speaker 3: of the year. Snapping it past Tarasov.
- 17:23Speaker 5: 3-0 Seattle.
- 17:26Speaker 12: Berkeley Catton again dropping more hints that his game continues
- 17:28Speaker 12: to improve each and every night. He went 5-9, by
- 17:31Speaker 12: the way, at the face-off circle. And that face-off win,
- 17:34Speaker 12: a pretty important one, setting up Brandon Montour at 16-01.
- 17:37Speaker 12: To get Montour on the board for his first goal
- 17:40Speaker 12: of the year. And that also lifting Catton to five
- 17:43Speaker 12: points last six games. Apparently the Kraken had this one
- 17:46Speaker 12: well in hand with a 3-0 lead. Brandon Montour from
- 17:49Speaker 12: Berkeley Catton. That going down at 16-01. And all the
- 17:52Speaker 12: Kraken had to do was play efficient hockey to close
- 17:56Speaker 12: out the Red Wings in the final 20 minutes. But
- 17:59Speaker 12: the Red Wings had different ideas. Victor Arvidsson got them
- 18:03Speaker 12: on the board from off the rush. He beat Phillip
- 18:05Speaker 12: Grubauer through his screen at 625 yards. Fourth on the
- 18:08Speaker 12: year from Finney and Johansen. And then Lucas Raymond, courtesy
- 18:13Speaker 12: of power play goal at 724, made it a one-goal
- 18:16Speaker 12: game as he stuffed a rebound blocker side of Grubauer
- 18:19Speaker 12: to Brinkett. And Larkin had the assist on the play.
- 18:23Speaker 12: The Kraken complicating their matters as well as Chandler Stephenson.
- 18:26Speaker 12: Maybe you call it a roughing call that late, maybe
- 18:29Speaker 12: you don't, but nonetheless, Detroit pulling their goaltender to make
- 18:32Speaker 12: it six on four. And to the dying seconds, Debrinket
- 18:35Speaker 12: tied the game to make it 3-3, sixth goal on
- 18:39Speaker 12: the year from Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond as well.
- 18:43Speaker 12: And that giving Debrinket his 300th career National Hockey League goal.
- 18:48Speaker 12: as Dabrinka tied the game up at 19-43 on the
- 18:52Speaker 12: man advantage, and the Kraken into a tailspin mentally from
- 18:56Speaker 12: that point. They tried to reset themselves into overtime. The
- 18:59Speaker 12: Red Wings owning plenty of puck possession early, but the
- 19:02Speaker 12: Kraken surviving it as both teams by the end of
- 19:04Speaker 12: the five-minute session getting just one shot on net. Into
- 19:08Speaker 12: the shootout, the two teams went, and both goaltenders turning away.
- 19:13Speaker 12: the respective shooters in round one and also into round two.
- 19:17Speaker 12: But Freddie Gaudreau finally popped one in at the third
- 19:20Speaker 12: round to make it 1-0 Kraken. Victor Arvidson, though, kept
- 19:24Speaker 12: the game alive. He answered, but then into round four,
- 19:27Speaker 12: Bobby McMahon coming through to set this up with the
- 19:30Speaker 12: game on the line between Dylan Larkin and Philip Grubauer.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Once again, Dylan Larkin. The game resting on his stick.
- 19:39Speaker 8: Grubauer comes out of his crease.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Mark it with speed. Left circle. Out of the middle
- 19:44Speaker 4: of the slot. He shoots.
- 19:45Speaker 5: Edge time by Philip Brubauer!
- 19:48Speaker 15: And the Seattle Kraken take the extra point for three
- 19:53Speaker 15: in a shootout.
- 19:55Speaker 12: A resilient goaltender in front of a resilient team closes
- 19:58Speaker 12: this one out as Philip Grubauer on a 22 save
- 20:01Speaker 12: effort picks up the win. He is now 3-1-1 on
- 20:05Speaker 12: the season. Kind of hard to fault the goals that
- 20:07Speaker 12: got passed in this evening. Daniil Tarasov takes the overtime loss.
- 20:10Speaker 12: 24 saves on 27 shots. He is now 1-0-2 on
- 20:15Speaker 12: the year. And despite a 3-0 lead, going up in smoke,
- 20:19Speaker 12: the Kraken win. find a way to eke out the
- 20:22Speaker 12: second point in the long run and knock off the
- 20:25Speaker 12: Red Wings 4-3, the final in the shootout. Time now
- 20:28Speaker 12: for the Coors Light chillest moments of the game. And again,
- 20:31Speaker 12: Kraken fans, you can win your chance to sit in
- 20:33Speaker 12: the Coors Light silver seats. Go to CoorsLight.com forward slash
- 20:38Speaker 12: Seattle Kraken to enter. Must be 21 years of age.
- 20:41Speaker 12: No purchase necessary. Coors Light. Choose chill. Celebrate responsibly. Moment
- 20:48Speaker 12: number one, and you could maybe say it was a
- 20:50Speaker 12: moment of truth with Detroit going to the power play
- 20:52Speaker 12: because they got one right past Grubauer off the shot
- 20:55Speaker 12: by Victor Arvidson. But then you figure if the Kraken
- 20:58Speaker 12: can get a key penalty kill, they're in business. But
- 21:01Speaker 12: Detroit instead got a power play goal courtesy Lucas Raymond
- 21:05Speaker 12: collecting a rebound at the blocker's side to make it
- 21:08Speaker 12: a 3-2 game. And then we go right down to
- 21:12Speaker 12: the final seconds here with the Kraken down 6-on-4 Detroit.
- 21:15Speaker 12: They're looking for a way to get out of Dodge.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Ben Chirot near side.
- 21:21Speaker 4: He'll rifle this around the kick plate. Michael Rasmussen attempted
- 21:26Speaker 4: to center.
- 21:26Speaker 5: It's settled down by Montour.
- 21:34Speaker 12: The plot twist at 19.43 is Alex Dabrinkit's sixth goal
- 21:38Speaker 12: of the season with the Kraken committing a giveaway right
- 21:41Speaker 12: back in their own zone. And when you leave Dabrinkit,
- 21:43Speaker 12: Dylan Larkin, and Lucas Raymond wide open in front of
- 21:47Speaker 12: your own goaltender, it's asking for trouble. And Dabrinkit able
- 21:50Speaker 12: to collect the pass by Dylan Larkin, blocker set on Grubauer,
- 21:54Speaker 12: wide open. That tied the game, but the Kraken were
- 21:56Speaker 12: able to find a way out. to survive in the
- 21:59Speaker 12: long run. Time now for the big win brought to
- 22:01Speaker 12: you by the Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling. And the
- 22:05Speaker 12: Blue Jackets taken on the Maple Leafs had Toronto bringing
- 22:09Speaker 12: back a familiar face to Columbus.
- 22:12Speaker 8: Back it goes to.
- 22:13Speaker 20: Darren Radish with five shots last night.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Now Lowe, Matthews, Marchenko.
- 22:18Speaker 8: To the net and Matthews scores! Or is it Marchenko backdoor?
- 22:23Speaker 8: Leafs have tied it on the power play.
- 22:27Speaker 12: Chris Cuthbert had the call there for Maple Leafs television
- 22:30Speaker 12: as Kirill Marchenko coming back to score in his return
- 22:33Speaker 12: against his former team. And with that, the Maple Leafs
- 22:37Speaker 12: knock off the Blue Jackets 6-2 at Nationwide Arena. The

- 31:54Speaker 12: Tacoma Dodge. And then there's more if you want. Go
- 31:57Speaker 12: ahead and select option D. Tacoma Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep Ram
- 32:00Speaker 12: at the corner of 38th and South Tacoma Way, the
- 32:03Speaker 12: intersection of savings.
- 32:05Speaker 4: All right.
- 32:05Speaker 12: Mackie Samuskevich, Riker Evans, Brandon Montour. That should have been
- 32:09Speaker 12: enough to get this thing done. But this was edgier
- 32:12Speaker 12: C stuff.
- 32:12Speaker 8: And maybe.
- 32:13Speaker 12: Just a wee bit too close for comfort as Al
- 32:16Speaker 12: Koniski joining us here at Tom's Watch Bar.
- 32:19Speaker 8: Have we what? Enough sweat off our brow here from
- 32:22Speaker 8: that one.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, as much as you'd like every
- 32:25Speaker 3: game to be 6-3 like the last time these two
- 32:28Speaker 3: teams met and Seattle put up a bunch of goals,
- 32:31Speaker 3: not every game can be that way despite where you
- 32:34Speaker 3: think the opponent is in the standings. Detroit's coming off
- 32:38Speaker 3: of a couple of wins. Most recently, San Jose, they
- 32:40Speaker 3: had some momentum coming into this building. this is not
- 32:43Speaker 3: the same team that the Kraken saw a couple weeks ago,
- 32:45Speaker 3: and I think they proved that in the third period tonight.
- 32:48Speaker 12: I think we're going to kind of go through this
- 32:50Speaker 12: with a certain thing because I was really prepared at
- 32:54Speaker 12: the end of two periods here to talk about just
- 32:57Speaker 12: how much everything from the Florida game had just reversed course.
- 33:02Speaker 12: But we're going to get into, I think, a lesson
- 33:03Speaker 12: of what it takes to close out games. And there
- 33:06Speaker 12: is a difference in what we learned from a team
- 33:09Speaker 12: that has been together for a long time whether it
- 33:12Speaker 12: might be, I think, by age or by just pedigree,
- 33:16Speaker 12: maturity to close out games, and some teams were well
- 33:19Speaker 12: on their way, sometimes struggle with this. San Jose is
- 33:23Speaker 12: one example of this. They talked about this, at least
- 33:26Speaker 12: their broadcast side did, when they faced, guess who, the
- 33:29Speaker 12: Red Wings last Saturday. They're a tough team to close out,
- 33:33Speaker 12: but if I can kind of get to this theme,
- 33:35Speaker 12: it's kind of like tonight is two things can be true.
- 33:39Speaker 12: I think, yeah, what we're looking at is that You're very,
- 33:42Speaker 12: very encouraged from what you've seen with some guys here
- 33:45Speaker 12: in the top six starting to kind of turn things around.
- 33:48Speaker 12: I thought looked great in the opening minutes. Getting Brandon
- 33:51Speaker 12: Montour on the board, that's a plus. And Philip Grubauer,
- 33:55Speaker 12: collectively here with the entire defense, looked like they were
- 33:59Speaker 12: locked in and in lockstep first two periods. But then
- 34:03Speaker 12: we also learned it takes a lot more to close
- 34:06Speaker 12: out games because against the Red Wings, I use the
- 34:10Speaker 12: analogy maybe here for baseball. You give them chances to
- 34:14Speaker 12: skate in your own zone and give them special teams time.
- 34:18Speaker 12: It's like loading the bases against the Yankees, the Brewers,
- 34:22Speaker 12: or the Dodgers.
- 34:22Speaker 5: Yeah, it absolutely is.
- 34:24Speaker 3: And you know, this team's success has always come from
- 34:26Speaker 3: its depth of scoring. And you saw that again here tonight.
- 34:29Speaker 3: You got two goals from the blue line. You got
- 34:31Speaker 3: Mackie Samoskiewicz with the first goal of the game. I'm
- 34:34Speaker 3: not sure where the first line was tonight, Mike. Jared McCann,
- 34:38Speaker 3: Matty Beneers, and Jordan Eberle not getting it done tonight.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Jordan Eberle probably had six shot attempts, three shots on goal,
- 34:46Speaker 3: just not able to finish. I would have liked to
- 34:48Speaker 3: have seen more from that line, but this team has
- 34:52Speaker 3: success when they get depth of scoring, but they're not
- 34:56Speaker 3: the Edmonton Oilers where they can take the month of
- 34:59Speaker 3: October and November off. They're not the Carolina Hurricanes who
- 35:02Speaker 3: can lose to Calgary 3-2 the other night and probably
- 35:05Speaker 3: still be deep into the playoffs come April. They're a
- 35:08Speaker 3: team that's going to have to fight and scratch and
- 35:10Speaker 3: claw all year long for every single point they can
- 35:13Speaker 3: get to get into the playoffs. So tonight was no different.
- 35:16Speaker 3: They needed both of these points. They took the long path.
- 35:19Speaker 5: To get them.
- 35:20Speaker 12: I think you raise a great point there because, again,
- 35:22Speaker 12: they change up. Lane Lambert did. He changed up his
- 35:25Speaker 12: top six, meaning line one, line two. And, you know,
- 35:29Speaker 12: you can debate whether, you know, one line's their top line,
- 35:33Speaker 12: the other really is their top line. Well, You know,
- 35:36Speaker 12: it doesn't matter here. The bottom line is that they
- 35:39Speaker 12: weren't getting enough out of their top six last roughly
- 35:42Speaker 12: two or three games, and he had to find a
- 35:44Speaker 12: way to get something going. So short-term, this works. You
- 35:47Speaker 12: put Mackie Samuskevich on the right wing with Chandler Stevenson,
- 35:51Speaker 12: Bobby McMahon, and they look great. I thought Samuskevich, best
- 35:55Speaker 12: player on the ice back in period one. But for
- 35:58Speaker 12: the other line, you put Jared McCann, Matty Beneers, and
- 36:02Speaker 12: Jordan Eberle together.
- 36:03Speaker 8: And they come up empty.
- 36:05Speaker 12: So the obvious question begs, where are we right now
- 36:07Speaker 12: with this trio?
- 36:08Speaker 5: Yeah, and I don't know.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Listen, and one game doesn't tell the tale of the season, but,
- 36:13Speaker 3: you know, if you're Lane Lambert, you're looking to generate
- 36:15Speaker 3: offense from all your lines. We've talked a lot about
- 36:18Speaker 3: the fourth line as of late. They've been getting it done.
- 36:20Speaker 3: We've talked a lot about the Caton line. They've been
- 36:23Speaker 3: getting it done. The blue line's been contributing. I think
- 36:26Speaker 3: that you just got to try and squeeze more of
- 36:28Speaker 3: that top six, and when they do, this team can't
- 36:31Speaker 3: be beaten.
- 36:32Speaker 5: But when they don't, they've got to rely on other areas.
- 36:34Speaker 8: Again, Texas, 49451 Tacoma Dodge text line. Are you elated?
- 36:38Speaker 8: Are you relieved?
- 36:39Speaker 12: Or are you concerned as the Kraken hold off the
- 36:42Speaker 12: Red Wings in a shootout 4-3, your final score in
- 36:45Speaker 12: the Kraken sweep, the two-game season series? Three things I
- 36:49Speaker 12: was looking out here for. I think, number one, you
- 36:52Speaker 12: wanted to get a strong first period, Alan. You want
- 36:54Speaker 12: to kind of get through that first shift. The Red
- 36:57Speaker 12: Wings were maybe spending more time in the Kraken zone
- 37:00Speaker 12: than what you would have hoped they would have spent.
- 37:02Speaker 12: But a couple of key blocks. I saw Montour getting
- 37:05Speaker 12: the body in the way on one. Ben Myers got
- 37:07Speaker 12: his body in the way on the other.
- 37:08Speaker 5: Matty Beneers did as well.
- 37:10Speaker 8: Beneers as well.
- 37:11Speaker 12: And that, I think, helped them maybe get settled in,
- 37:14Speaker 12: where you figure you don't get one pop right by
- 37:18Speaker 12: you here in the first minute, two minutes, and things
- 37:20Speaker 12: are going to be fine. You know, you've got a
- 37:22Speaker 12: goalie back there to also take care of you. And
- 37:24Speaker 12: by the way, Philip Grubauer, despite Three getting past him.
- 37:27Speaker 12: I would argue not his fault here for tonight. But
- 37:29Speaker 12: also on top of that, first period, two good looks early.
- 37:33Speaker 12: You get Beneers with a two-on-one. Unfortunately, that goes by
- 37:36Speaker 12: the wayside. And I kind of give credit. Ben Sherrod
- 37:38Speaker 12: did a great job breaking that one up. But then
- 37:40Speaker 12: also Chandler Stevenson, right circle. Eventually, something was going to happen,
- 37:46Speaker 12: and Mackie Samuskevich made a very, very mature offensive play
- 37:49Speaker 12: to make it 1-0.
- 37:50Speaker 3: No, he absolutely did, and it was a great play
- 37:53Speaker 3: by Chandler Stevenson to start it off because Chandler Stevenson's
- 37:56Speaker 3: obviously got to drop the puck to him down that
- 37:58Speaker 3: left side, but then you don't quit on that play.
- 38:01Speaker 3: You still have a role to play, and Stevenson did
- 38:03Speaker 3: it perfectly, whereas he keeps pushing forward to push those
- 38:06Speaker 3: defensemen back. That defenseman can't get to Mackie Samuskivich. That
- 38:10Speaker 3: gives Samuskivich time and space. He moves from left to right.
- 38:14Speaker 3: He gets Tarasov moving. He puts it against the grain
- 38:17Speaker 3: back in the corner.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Great goal.
- 38:19Speaker 12: Second thing I was looking out for here tonight was
- 38:22Speaker 12: top six production. We got right back here to this.
- 38:25Speaker 12: You get production out of one line. You get nothing
- 38:27Speaker 12: here out of the other. So you go through a
- 38:31Speaker 12: period of two to three games of trying to figure
- 38:35Speaker 12: out where is this coming from.
- 38:36Speaker 8: You maybe get frustrated as a coach here.
- 38:38Speaker 12: But as you said, one game is not an ultimate result,
- 38:43Speaker 12: ultimate end game make. So when you make a change
- 38:45Speaker 12: like this, how long do you kind of ride this
- 38:48Speaker 12: out before you almost kind of make too many changes
- 38:51Speaker 12: here and you're effectively spinning your own wheels?
- 38:53Speaker 3: Well, I mean, whenever you make a change to a line,
- 38:56Speaker 3: a forward line, ideally you're keeping two guys together and
- 38:59Speaker 3: you're only changing one piece of it. Because you like
- 39:02Speaker 3: two guys that play as pairs together. You like the
- 39:04Speaker 3: way they play. So the question then becomes, when you
- 39:07Speaker 3: add that third player, does it make the whole better?
- 39:10Speaker 3: And if it does, that's great. But sometimes it takes
- 39:12Speaker 3: three or four games to really get an idea if
- 39:15Speaker 3: that move was the right move. And it's still too
- 39:18Speaker 3: early to tell at this point.
- 39:20Speaker 12: The third thing I was looking out for tonight was
- 39:22Speaker 12: the bottom six. And it looked like, again, that they
- 39:26Speaker 12: were dialed in when they were deployed back in the
- 39:29Speaker 12: first period. I think there's kind of a common theme
- 39:31Speaker 12: here for this. Berkley Catton now has got five points
- 39:34Speaker 12: in six games. It looks like that he's very comfortable, obviously,
- 39:38Speaker 12: as a hockey player. But you put him even in
- 39:40Speaker 12: the offensive zone. He's going to win you face-offs. He
- 39:43Speaker 12: looked great, I thought, at the face-off circle. And he
- 39:45Speaker 12: finds a way to set up what was ultimately a very,
- 39:48Speaker 12: very important goal. But then you get to Freddie Goudreau's
- 39:51Speaker 12: line as well. Ben Myers on the left wing and
- 39:54Speaker 12: then Ryan Winterton as well on the right wing. Overall
- 39:58Speaker 12: for tonight, even though you don't get a goal out
- 40:01Speaker 12: of Goudreau, you don't get a goal or even a
- 40:03Speaker 12: helper out of Ben Myers or Winterton, they play a
- 40:07Speaker 12: different game as far as their role and their purpose.
- 40:10Speaker 12: So where do we land at as far as the
- 40:12Speaker 12: end result for them?
- 40:13Speaker 3: Well, they're a checking line when they're not scoring, which
- 40:16Speaker 3: is to say, Their primary objective is to go, especially
- 40:19Speaker 3: at home, Mikey, to get matched up against lines that
- 40:23Speaker 3: they can shut down. That's their primary objective is don't
- 40:26Speaker 3: get scored on. Don't read me the plus minus. I
- 40:29Speaker 3: don't want to know it, but I'm hoping they're at
- 40:31Speaker 3: least on the neutral side. But regardless, that's their job.
- 40:34Speaker 3: And if at the end of the night they're either neutral, zeros,
- 40:37Speaker 3: or they're in the plus, they've done their job. Now
- 40:39Speaker 3: if they start putting pucks in the net as well,
- 40:41Speaker 3: now you're getting bonuses out of them. Now you're getting
- 40:44Speaker 3: things that take pressure off the other three lines a
- 40:46Speaker 3: little bit. And now you're getting the kind of guys
- 40:48Speaker 3: that can help you get not just into the playoffs,
- 40:50Speaker 3: but through the playoffs.
- 40:51Speaker 12: Well, in case you ask, there are only two players
- 40:54Speaker 12: who finish in the minus. That was Josh Mahura and
- 40:57Speaker 12: that was Ville Odovainen. Everything else was even or plus.
- 41:01Speaker 3: So three goals scored on each side. Yeah, there was,
- 41:04Speaker 3: I think, two power play goals for Detroit. But they're
- 41:09Speaker 3: not minus. So box checked. They did not hurt you
- 41:14Speaker 3: defensively in your own end of the ice. But where
- 41:16Speaker 3: they really become effective is when they can help you
- 41:19Speaker 3: offensively as well.
- 41:20Speaker 5: And over that road trip, they were doing it night
- 41:22Speaker 5: in and night out.
- 41:23Speaker 12: As we said earlier, two things can be true about
- 41:26Speaker 12: how you measure and evaluate this game. We got to
- 41:29Speaker 12: a lot of the good stuff here. Now, the ultimate
- 41:32Speaker 12: burning question is how do you close out games like this?
- 41:38Speaker 12: Detroit's good, but it requires a little bit more than
- 41:40Speaker 12: just looking at, well, they're good and they're skilled.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think I'd start by saying not
- 41:45Speaker 3: taking three penalties in the third period. That's one way
- 41:47Speaker 3: to close games out. Now, easy to say, difficult to
- 41:51Speaker 3: do sometimes. But that's where Detroit started having success was
- 41:55Speaker 3: two power play goals tonight. They've got a lot of
- 41:58Speaker 3: talent on that bench that can put pucks in the net,
- 42:00Speaker 3: especially when they're a man up on you. So Seattle
- 42:03Speaker 3: gave them just too many chances on their power play tonight.
- 42:06Speaker 3: I think that was a big reason for not just
- 42:09Speaker 3: the third period, but for Detroit. been in the game
- 42:12Speaker 3: for a lot of the night.
- 42:13Speaker 12: The difference for me between period two and period three,
- 42:18Speaker 12: and again, the Kraken had a 13 to four edge
- 42:21Speaker 12: in shots over the Red Wings, but it really requires
- 42:24Speaker 12: more than just looking into shots on goal. We saw
- 42:27Speaker 12: Detroit give a pretty healthy push. Middle of period two,
- 42:31Speaker 12: but it really didn't look and feel like the Kraken
- 42:35Speaker 12: were scrambling, that they were panicking. Once Victor Arvidsson scored
- 42:39Speaker 12: in period three, You had a lot of puck watching.
- 42:42Speaker 12: You had a lot of scrambling. And you almost kind
- 42:45Speaker 12: of had a sense where, you know, how many guys were,
- 42:48Speaker 12: I don't know, but a sense of being mentally locked up.
- 42:51Speaker 12: It was almost as if you're playing to avoid losing
- 42:56Speaker 12: a game rather than trying to play to try to
- 42:58Speaker 12: land a knockout blow and get two points.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Sure.
- 43:01Speaker 3: I mean, listen, when there's a zero up on the board,
- 43:03Speaker 3: you have a dam that's holding back water. And as
- 43:06Speaker 3: soon as there's a crack in that dam, that first goal,
- 43:09Speaker 3: It's hard to stop the crack from spreading. And if
- 43:12Speaker 3: you're the team that's trying to get back like Detroit
- 43:14Speaker 3: was tonight, as soon as you break that zero, you
- 43:16Speaker 3: get momentum. You feel like, hey, this Grubauer guy, he's
- 43:19Speaker 3: not standing on his head tonight. He can be beat.
- 43:22Speaker 3: And you continue that onslaught of pucks to the net,
- 43:25Speaker 3: which Detroit is known for a lot of shot attempts.
- 43:27Speaker 3: You start to have a lot more confidence. And you
- 43:29Speaker 3: could see that building in the third period as they
- 43:32Speaker 3: started to get more and more attempts defensively. And finding
- 43:34Speaker 3: the back of the net, they felt like they couldn't
- 43:36Speaker 3: be stopped.
- 43:36Speaker 12: We're going to get to your reaction again. 49451 Tacoma
- 43:39Speaker 12: Dash text line coming up in just a bit. Plus
- 43:41Speaker 12: also reaction from Lane Lambert a little bit later on here. But, Al,
- 43:45Speaker 12: you bring the penalties up. I thought it was great
- 43:47Speaker 12: because when you get into period three and a closeout situation, well,
- 43:51Speaker 12: the rule of thumb is just stay out of the box, period.
- 43:54Speaker 12: But you and Everett brought back up in period three.
- 43:58Speaker 12: The roughing penalty to Chandler Stevenson at 1835. Now, difference
- 44:03Speaker 12: here for me, and Lane Lambert has hinted at this,
- 44:06Speaker 12: he's fine with the rough stuff. It's the stick fouls.
- 44:10Speaker 12: It's the slow feet fouls that are inexcusable. But calling
- 44:14Speaker 12: a roughing penalty like that late in the game, do
- 44:17Speaker 12: we look at it differently now than, say, versus 25
- 44:20Speaker 12: minutes ago?
- 44:20Speaker 5: Well, I mean, listen, referees would tell you they don't
- 44:23Speaker 5: look at it differently. A penalty is a penalty.
- 44:26Speaker 3: I think I would look at most games and look
- 44:29Speaker 3: at the last two minutes of those games and rarely
- 44:31Speaker 3: see single roughing penalties. Now, you might get two guys
- 44:35Speaker 3: that battle in the corner. They both go for roughing penalties.
- 44:37Speaker 3: That's different. But to send one guy to the box
- 44:40Speaker 3: with two minutes left in the game as a rough,
- 44:43Speaker 3: I want to see a hook, a right hook to
- 44:47Speaker 3: the head. And in that case, it was Chandler Stevenson.
- 44:50Speaker 3: just in a hand battle where he pushed off the
- 44:53Speaker 3: Red Wing player. Yeah, it was in the back of
- 44:55Speaker 3: the helmet, but it was a push-off. It's a 50-50 call.
- 44:59Speaker 3: In the last two minutes of the game, I'm surprised
- 45:02Speaker 3: that that call was made.
- 45:03Speaker 12: Now, I think also on top of that, you want
- 45:05Speaker 12: to look back at, well, don't put yourself in position
- 45:07Speaker 12: to get like that. So, I mean, this game began
- 45:09Speaker 12: to unravel. I mean, let's just be fair and honest here.
- 45:12Speaker 12: It was unraveling a lot more before that. And then
- 45:14Speaker 12: you still had a chance to kill this game off
- 45:17Speaker 12: and you can't fumble the puck back in your own
- 45:19Speaker 12: zone last minute.
- 45:20Speaker 5: No, no, you can't. And there were other mistakes made
- 45:23Speaker 5: at that point. That was just one of a few.
- 45:26Speaker 12: Again, 49-451, Tacoma Dodge text line. Let's get to some
- 45:29Speaker 12: reaction right now. And from the 406 asking, what do
- 45:32Speaker 12: you think about putting Freddie Gaudreau here on the first line?
- 45:35Speaker 12: Phillip Grubauer is on fire as well. That from the 406.
- 45:38Speaker 12: I look at what Lane Lambert said earlier today, and
- 45:42Speaker 12: I'm going to kind of keep like a running tab
- 45:44Speaker 12: of what he says here in, you know, Media scrums, one-on-ones,
- 45:48Speaker 12: because it's absolute golden. To kind of paraphrase this, some
- 45:54Speaker 12: guys are in the right seat on the bus. That's
- 45:57Speaker 12: in reference to the Catton line and the Gaudreau line.
- 46:00Speaker 12: I mean, yes, he's your leading goal scorer, Freddie Gaudreau,
- 46:04Speaker 12: but I don't think you want to rob Peter here
- 46:06Speaker 12: to pay Paul, so to speak, to move him up,
- 46:08Speaker 12: and that basically blows up the entire scheme.
- 46:11Speaker 5: No, I don't think so. I think that you want to.
- 46:16Speaker 3: You want to encourage that scoring whenever you can without
- 46:20Speaker 3: disrupting other areas of the ice.
- 46:22Speaker 5: And if Freddie Goudreau is your number one scorer, that's great.
- 46:25Speaker 5: I love Freddie Goudreau. I love the role he plays.
- 46:28Speaker 5: He shouldn't be the number one scorer on this team.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Now, I don't believe he will be, but you've got
- 46:33Speaker 3: to start getting numbers going from your top six.
- 46:36Speaker 12: 206 saying frustrated as a Kraken had to close out
- 46:39Speaker 12: a game like that and not let the other team
- 46:41Speaker 12: back in, but also said the officiating had two mystery calls.
- 46:46Speaker 12: That from the 206. 425 saying happy. The Kraken were
- 46:49Speaker 12: able to get the full two points, but it shouldn't
- 46:51Speaker 12: have gone to a shootout even with soft penalties. The
- 46:54Speaker 12: lack of closing in on the third is concerning at
- 46:57Speaker 12: this point.
- 46:58Speaker 5: Yeah, and they're right.
- 47:01Speaker 3: Is it concerning at this point? It's always concerning. I
- 47:05Speaker 3: don't care what time of the year it is. You
- 47:07Speaker 3: need to be able to close out games. Did the
- 47:09Speaker 3: Kraken close it out? Yeah, they got the two points.
- 47:12Speaker 3: They gave up a point. As Everett said, if you're
- 47:14Speaker 3: going to give one up, why not give one.
- 47:15Speaker 5: Up to the Eastern Conference team? It doesn't hurt you.
- 47:18Speaker 3: So you'd like to see that get closed out in regulation, though,
- 47:21Speaker 3: against Western Conference teams.
- 47:23Speaker 12: 4-2-5, saying the Kraken facing a little adversity, yet got
- 47:27Speaker 12: it done. We'll take the two points and just looking
- 47:29Speaker 12: for an increase here in energy and an increase in
- 47:31Speaker 12: the physical side against Utah coming up. Spoiler alert, we're
- 47:35Speaker 12: going to get to Utah because they are rolling right
- 47:37Speaker 12: now to begin this season.
- 47:39Speaker 8: That from the 4-2-5.
- 47:41Speaker 12: 2-5-3, you never, ever play not to lose. You always
- 47:45Speaker 12: play to win. That basically is the theme of this
- 47:47Speaker 12: one here from the 2-5-3. Once again, Kraken goals, Mackie Samaskevich,
- 47:53Speaker 12: Riker Evans, Brandon Montour, enough to guarantee overtime, but Detroit
- 47:58Speaker 12: forcing overtime. Victor Arvidson, Lucas Raymond, Alex Dabrinkit, all in
- 48:03Speaker 12: period three of the Kraken, though.
- 48:05Speaker 8: Prevail 4-3 in a shootout. Lane Lambert, yes.
- 48:09Speaker 12: Reaction from head coach Lane Lambert right around the corner
- 48:13Speaker 12: as Mike and Al right here live at Tom's Wash Bar. Again,
- 48:16Speaker 12: more of your reaction, Texas 49451 Tacoma Dosh text line.
- 48:19Speaker 8: Back in a bit right here on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 48:24Speaker 1: If you've got a comment about tonight's Kraken game, make
- 48:27Speaker 1: sure we hear about it. Just text us at 49451.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Now back to talking Kraken with Mike Benton on Sports
- 48:35Speaker 1: Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 48:39Speaker 8: Are you elated? Are you relieved? Or are you.
- 48:42Speaker 12: Concerned there is still more time to get your reaction in?
- 48:45Speaker 8: 49451 Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 48:48Speaker 12: The Kraken get enough to get a 4-3 shootout win
- 48:51Speaker 12: over the Red Wings. Despite holding a 3-0 lead in
- 48:54Speaker 12: period three, they survive a three-goal rush by Detroit to
- 48:58Speaker 12: force overtime. Eventually, Phillip Grubauer stopping Dylan Larkin to close
- 49:03Speaker 12: things out. All right, without further ado, again, Mike Benton,
- 49:05Speaker 12: Al Koniski back at Tom's Wash Bar. Back across the
- 49:08Speaker 12: street we go. Downstairs for more reaction now with Kraken
- 49:11Speaker 12: head coach Lane Lambert. Lane, we talked recently about consistency,
- 49:16Speaker 12: and tonight I think for two periods you guys had it, third.
- 49:18Speaker 8: Period did you lose it?
- 49:20Speaker 18: What happened there in the third period? I don't know
- 49:23Speaker 18: that we necessarily you know it comes off and appears
- 49:26Speaker 18: that we lost it but to be honest with you
- 49:29Speaker 18: I thought our start was great in the third period.
- 49:31Speaker 18: We had two or three chances to make it 4-0
- 49:35Speaker 18: and I thought we were on our toes and then
- 49:40Speaker 18: We ran into a little bit of penalty trouble and,
- 49:43Speaker 18: you know, turned a little bit on a dime. We
- 49:45Speaker 18: made a mistake through the neutral zone on their first goal,
- 49:50Speaker 18: you know, which gave them some momentum and gave them
- 49:52Speaker 18: some life, clearly. And then ran ourselves into penalty trouble.
- 49:57Speaker 18: I didn't agree with the penalties that were called and
- 50:02Speaker 18: put us on our heels. So I think I'm pretty
- 50:06Speaker 18: happy with, obviously, the result. and I'm pretty happy with
- 50:10Speaker 18: most of the game. You know, you can't control certain
- 50:15Speaker 18: things that happen, bounces and this and that, and certainly,
- 50:18Speaker 18: you know, when they have a face-off six on five
- 50:21Speaker 18: and they're holding our guy up, clearly interfering with him,
- 50:25Speaker 18: and our guy's trying to get out there, and we
- 50:26Speaker 18: end up in the penalty box, it's kind of astonishing
- 50:30Speaker 18: to me. So, you know, I think we ran into
- 50:32Speaker 18: penalty troubles, and that kind of put us on our heels,
- 50:36Speaker 18: but overall, I thought we played very well, and we're uh,
- 50:40Speaker 18: really focused for, um, first game back off a road trip.
- 50:44Speaker 23: Are you referencing the Stevenson penalty there?
- 50:46Speaker 3: I am.
- 50:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:47Speaker 8: Um, the, you mentioned also you were looking.
- 50:49Speaker 23: For a spark from your top two lines. Did you
- 50:51Speaker 23: see that tonight?
- 50:52Speaker 18: Yeah, I started, uh, you know, obviously, uh, made a
- 50:54Speaker 18: little switch there with the top two lines, switched, uh,
- 50:58Speaker 18: switched Mackey and Ebbs. And I thought, uh, you know, Mackey,
- 51:01Speaker 18: Mackey had a good night. Uh, certainly I thought Chandler
- 51:04Speaker 18: played well. I thought he was skating, um, made some
- 51:07Speaker 18: good plays and, um, So those guys got us on
- 51:11Speaker 18: the board for sure, and it was good to see.
- 51:16Speaker 19: Coach, I believe Brandon Montour was the 12th different Kraken
- 51:21Speaker 19: skater to score for your team, and I believe only
- 51:26Speaker 19: Vegas has that many different goal scorers. I'm sure that
- 51:32Speaker 19: jives with your wanting everybody pulling on the rope.
- 51:37Speaker 18: Yeah, no, it's we, you know, everybody matters in our
- 51:43Speaker 18: locker room, no matter what your role, what your job is.
- 51:47Speaker 18: And we have to have a complete team effort in
- 51:49Speaker 18: order for us to have success. So it's nice to
- 51:53Speaker 18: see contributions from everybody for sure.
- 51:58Speaker 23: Lane, in the room, Brandon told us that there's been
- 52:00Speaker 23: a greater focus on shootouts for you guys this year
- 52:03Speaker 23: and the effort that you guys want to put into them.
- 52:05Speaker 23: To see a couple wins come out of that area
- 52:07Speaker 23: for you so far this season, both with how groovy
- 52:10Speaker 23: it's been in those moments, but then on the goal
- 52:12Speaker 23: scoring side too, what have you liked about the shootout
- 52:14Speaker 23: and what's gone into the decision to maybe put a
- 52:16Speaker 23: little bit more emphasis there?
- 52:17Speaker 18: Well, certainly we didn't have as much success last season
- 52:24Speaker 18: as we wanted to. These are huge points to.
- 52:26Speaker 4: Be able to earn.
- 52:29Speaker 18: And it wasn't like we didn't work on it last
- 52:32Speaker 18: year either, but I think our goalie coach, when you
- 52:36Speaker 18: look at it, he did a really good job calling
- 52:38Speaker 18: Zuliano and putting together a presentation. Spent a lot of
- 52:42Speaker 18: time doing it over the summer and really put together
- 52:47Speaker 18: a good presentation, and I know guys work on it
- 52:50Speaker 18: in practice. Our e-bug... I think he, I don't know,
- 52:55Speaker 18: one day he took about 150 penalty shots. He probably
- 52:57Speaker 18: couldn't even move anymore, but guys are working on it, right? And,
- 53:04Speaker 18: you know, in order to understand, and I think it
- 53:07Speaker 18: was beneficial for our guys to see it from a
- 53:11Speaker 18: goaltender's perspective, our goalie coach's perspective, and we've been executing
- 53:17Speaker 18: on some of the things that he's come up with,
- 53:19Speaker 18: and obviously, you know, Gruby's played.
- 53:21Speaker 4: Well in the.
- 53:23Speaker 8: That's head coach Lane Lambert.
- 53:24Speaker 12: And before we get to more reaction on the meat
- 53:26Speaker 12: of this game here, I have tried to play goaltender
- 53:29Speaker 12: before at the professional level.
- 53:31Speaker 8: It was an optional skate.
- 53:34Speaker 12: It was an optional skate back in the East Coast
- 53:36Speaker 12: Hockey League days of the Stockton Thunder. Keep in mind,
- 53:40Speaker 12: I faced maybe 25, 30 shots on that. I even
- 53:43Speaker 12: faced Al McInnes' son, Aaron McInnes, who can let it fly. 25,
- 53:47Speaker 12: 30 shots.
- 53:49Speaker 8: I woke up next day and couldn't move.
- 53:51Speaker 3: 150!
- 53:52Speaker 12: Al, I don't know what to say.
- 53:56Speaker 3: I mean, Lane Lambert giving props to his e-bug, Dolan Gilbert. Listen,
- 54:01Speaker 3: this is a kid that quietly shows up to every practice.
- 54:05Speaker 5: He's the last goalie off the ice.
- 54:08Speaker 3: He fills in for morning skates when maybe the starting
- 54:11Speaker 3: goaltender doesn't want to go or doesn't want to stay
- 54:13Speaker 3: up for the whole morning skate. When Joey Decord or
- 54:18Speaker 3: Phillip Gruber maybe need some time off he fills in
- 54:22Speaker 3: he's at every single skate and I tell you quietly
- 54:25Speaker 3: says nothing about it and does his job.
- 54:28Speaker 12: Prior to Michigan State and those crispy white and green
- 54:31Speaker 12: pads and gear still shines on through again that reaction
- 54:34Speaker 12: from head coach Lane Lambert before we get out of
- 54:36Speaker 12: here I thought a very very important thing that Lane
- 54:39Speaker 12: Lambert said and I think a different direction maybe as
- 54:42Speaker 12: far as how a lot of you know reaction that's
- 54:45Speaker 12: pouring in right now is feeling about this game there
- 54:48Speaker 12: is I don't want to say that the Kraken are
- 54:51Speaker 12: in a fragile state here. But I thought it was very,
- 54:55Speaker 12: you know, it was a very interesting route that he
- 54:57Speaker 12: took to show that, you know what, five-on-five play, okay.
- 55:00Speaker 12: I'm fine with it that this team had a rough
- 55:02Speaker 12: ride maybe last couple of games. To get a win
- 55:04Speaker 12: was very important for them because it's important to be
- 55:07Speaker 12: in the right kind of frame of mind once you
- 55:09Speaker 12: go back in for what's going to be not just
- 55:11Speaker 12: one but two tough games coming up on Thursday and Saturday.
- 55:14Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely.
- 55:14Speaker 3: And, you know what, Two-point wins are no different than goals.
- 55:19Speaker 3: They don't ask how, they just ask how many. And
- 55:22Speaker 3: at the end of the season, you're going to look
- 55:23Speaker 3: at that column and say, did they get enough wins,
- 55:26Speaker 3: enough two-point games to get themselves into the playoffs? And
- 55:30Speaker 3: as much as you'd like to see a blowout 4-0
- 55:32Speaker 3: win against a team like Detroit that's struggling, you've still
- 55:35Speaker 3: got the two points, so that's all that matters.
- 55:37Speaker 12: I thought it was interesting with the route he took.
- 55:39Speaker 12: I think he thought... Also, what we thought about the penalties.
- 55:43Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 55:43Speaker 8: And you just have to brush them off.
- 55:45Speaker 3: At least the Chandler-Stevenson one. Everett and I scratched our
- 55:48Speaker 3: heads on that one. You watch the replay, two guys
- 55:51Speaker 3: just in a hand battle with a little shove at
- 55:53Speaker 3: the end by Stevenson.
- 55:54Speaker 8: It won't get called again.
- 55:56Speaker 5: Again. Likely.
- 55:56Speaker 3: First period, second period, maybe it gets called. But last
- 56:00Speaker 3: two minutes of a tight game, I was really surprised.
- 56:04Speaker 12: I thought also very important to point out the shootout
- 56:06Speaker 12: because we often kind of just brush aside. It's not
- 56:08Speaker 12: a very, very– important part of the game as far
- 56:14Speaker 12: as the fundamentals. It's a mechanism here to close out
- 56:17Speaker 12: a game that's at a stalemate following overtime. But there
- 56:20Speaker 12: is something to be said of how much this team
- 56:23Speaker 12: has struggled, maybe, in the shootout. And you're finding more
- 56:26Speaker 12: and more guys who are performing with confidence. And that begins,
- 56:29Speaker 12: of course, with your goaltender, where Grubauer once again looked fantastic.
- 56:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, you can talk a lot about
- 56:35Speaker 3: the guys that got it done at the offensive end
- 56:37Speaker 3: of the ice, putting the puck in the net. It was...
- 56:40Speaker 3: It was Bobby McMahon with the game winner and Freddie
- 56:45Speaker 3: Goudreau that scored also. Both of those guys have worked
- 56:49Speaker 3: on their shootouts, but it doesn't matter if they score,
- 56:53Speaker 3: if Philip Grubauer doesn't do his job at the other
- 56:55Speaker 3: end as well. So, yeah, Bobby McMahon got the first
- 56:57Speaker 3: story of the game, but you could also give that
- 56:59Speaker 3: to Philip Grubauer for getting it done at the other end.
- 57:02Speaker 8: So, up next Thursday, the Utah Mammoth.
- 57:04Speaker 12: No surprise, they are 7-3, first 10 games, playing under
- 57:09Speaker 12: Heightened expectations this season as it'll be right now a
- 57:14Speaker 12: year where they're trying to even find more out of
- 57:15Speaker 12: Clayton Keller. 88-point year he had last year. Dylan Gunther
- 57:19Speaker 12: hitting 40 goals. Logan Cooley in the injury-shortened campaign. 43-54,
- 57:24Speaker 12: and yet they add Anders Lee and Vincent Trocek as well.
- 57:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and let's not forget one of the heavyweight bouts
- 57:29Speaker 3: of the year with McBain and Frederick from the Edmonton
- 57:32Speaker 3: Oilers going toe-to-toe the other night.
- 57:34Speaker 5: That was a good one.
- 57:36Speaker 3: Look it up if you didn't see it, but Yeah,
- 57:37Speaker 3: those boys are coming to town Thursday, and it's going
- 57:40Speaker 3: to be a tougher test than this test was tonight, Mike.
- 57:42Speaker 3: And again, you don't want to say that Seattle played
- 57:45Speaker 3: down to Detroit, but this test on Thursday is going
- 57:48Speaker 3: to require a bigger effort than what you saw tonight.
- 57:51Speaker 3: And we've seen this team do it. They can rise
- 57:54Speaker 3: to the occasion. I'd like to see them play hard
- 57:57Speaker 3: against this Utah Mammoth team.
- 57:58Speaker 12: They will have to slow down a Utah team that
- 58:00Speaker 12: scored 17 goals against them last year in three games,
- 58:03Speaker 12: and the Kraken trying to end a four-game series winning
- 58:06Speaker 12: streak here by.
- 58:07Speaker 8: Utah in the head-to-head series.
- 58:09Speaker 12: Again, Thursday, national TV game, only local source of coverage
- 58:13Speaker 12: right back here. Two teams, again, we'll meet in Utah
- 58:16Speaker 12: the 19th of February and right back here in Seattle
- 58:19Speaker 12: on March 30th. Again, face-off Thursdays at 7. airtime at 630.
- 58:23Speaker 12: Hope that you can certainly join us. That will do
- 58:25Speaker 12: it for here. Once again, big thanks to Travis Moger,
- 58:27Speaker 12: Technical Director, Terry Ryan, our on-site engineer, and for Al Koniski,
- 58:31Speaker 12: this is Mike Benton saying goodnight from Tom's Watch Bar
- 58:34Speaker 12: and Climate Pledge Arena.
- 58:36Speaker 8: Thank you for joining us.
- 58:37Speaker 12: Your final score, once again, in a shootout, the Kraken
- 58:40Speaker 12: for the Red Wings 3. This is Talking Kraken on
- 58:42Speaker 12: 93.3 KJRFM.
