Gus Thorpe: Mind the sacks, watch your step — every one of 'em came in since Tuesday night. The post office had to run a second truck down here Wednesday. I've been in radio twenty years and I never once saw mail move like this. Not for a giveaway, not for an election.
• 0:40
Gus Thorpe: Elgin Moss sat at that microphone half my life. Talked this town to sleep every night at eleven. And Tuesday he went and died right in the middle of the station break — heart quit on him, the house doctor says. Now I've got a thousand people out there who won't take the doctor's word for it.
• 1:03
The Detective: Gus Thorpe ran the station, and tonight he was running it scared. The mail sacks slumped along the wall in the dark like snowbanks that had lost their nerve in all that heat, and every window in the place stood open to a night that gave back nothing but more of the same. A man doesn't sweat like that over a heart attack. He sweats over what a thousand strangers might decide it was instead.
• 1:31
The Detective: So you want the letters answered.
• 1:33
Gus Thorpe: Answered. Every last one, in your own hand — polite, patient, and final. You tell 'em Elgin's heart just stopped, God rest him, and there's nothing underneath it. I want this thing put to bed gentle, before somebody louder puts it to bed their own way.
• 1:50
The Detective: A thousand letters is a lot of patience for a heart that just stopped.
• 1:54
Gus Thorpe: Which is why I want a name folks trust holding the pen. This house put your voice on the air once — that public-interest hour, years back. Only kind word this town's ever paid you, and it came out of these very walls. So I'm asking you. Not some clerk.
• 2:17
The Detective: That's a lot of faith in a man you're paying to say nothing happened.
• 2:20
Gus Thorpe: It isn't nothing to me. Elgin was working something up before he went — a piece he wanted on the air. Some fella he'd dug up, a redemption sort of story. Human interest. He kept it close to the vest.
• 2:34
The Detective: A piece on who?
• 2:35
Gus Thorpe: That's the devil of it. He never said. Told me he'd know it was ready the day he heard it. Now nobody's ever going to hear it.
• 2:45
The Detective: Behind his shoulder, in a cabinet with a glass door and a lock on it, sat one transcription disc — Tuesday night's broadcast, cut clean, the only thing in the whole building that had actually been in the room when Moss died. I asked if I could hear it.
• 3:03
Gus Thorpe: That disc stays exactly where it is. Nobody spins it — not you, not me, not the board downstairs. You answer the letters. You don't go digging around in a dead man's last hour.
• 3:19
The Detective: So that was the shape of the job. The one honest witness to the whole night was pressed into wax behind a locked pane of glass, and the man signing my check had just told me it wasn't for playing. In my experience, the record nobody will let you near is the only one worth breaking the glass to reach.
• 3:44
Man: I'm telling you what I heard with my own two ears — a chair go over, hard, and a man coughing wet, chest full of something. Right down under the music. I hauled a streetcar forty years. I know a sick man when I hear one.
• 4:02
Woman: It was no chair, and it was no man. It was a woman. I heard her call out a name, clear, and then that break music come up over the top of it, quick, like they wanted it gone.
• 4:15
The Detective: They'd started before I got there and they'd have gone till the streetlamps quit. The reception room was standing room and short on air — a big man still buttoned into his conductor's coat, a woman with a grocery net hung on her arm, and behind them thirty more, each one holding a letter they'd already mailed and come down to say again out loud. In this heat nobody in the city had been asleep at eleven o'clock. That was the whole trouble. A thousand people had put an ear to the same three seconds, and not two of them would hand me the same night.
• 4:52
The Detective: One at a time. You — the chair. You're sure it came under the music, not after it?
• 4:58
Man: Under it. Beneath it. That organ was playing the little break tune and the chair went over right through the middle of it. And the cough. You put the cough down in your notes.
• 5:10
The Detective: And you. You heard a woman.
• 5:12
Woman: A name. Two syllables, maybe. Sharp, then bit right off. And it was down under that same music as his chair. That's the one thing he's got right all night.
• 5:24
Man: It was a man. A man taking sick. I know what I heard.
• 5:29
Woman: And the fella standing right where you are swore up and down it was glass breaking. We can argue till Sunday, honey. Not one of us heard the same thing.
• 5:38
The Detective: But you all heard it in the same place. During the break.
• 5:42
Man: The break. The dead spot. When there's supposed to be not one sound going out but that organ.
• 5:50
Woman: Nothing at all going out. And I heard a woman, and he heard a chair, and that man heard glass — and every one of us dropped it into the very same little hole in the hour.
• 6:00
The Detective: That was the piece none of them could stop handing me, the thing a hundred quarreling ears agreed on without ever meaning to. They couldn't tell me what came through that microphone. They could only tell me when — the station break, when the studio mic is cut and the whole world is meant to hold its breath. No two of them agreed on a single sound. And every last one had heard it under the music, on a night the board swore that mic was dead.
• 6:34
The Detective: The control booth sat behind a wall of glass, and the heat had been trapped in there since noon with no place to go. Vern Corliss sat in the middle of it like a man who'd never once in his life been late for anything. Every engineer I'd ever met was a nervous type — all thumbs and apology. Corliss was calm. Calm the way still water is calm, right up until you find out how deep it runs.
• 7:03
Vern Corliss: Come in, come in — mind the heat, that's the one thing on this board I can't fix. You want to see the works? Nobody ever wants to see the works. Sit down, I'll walk you through the whole night if it helps.
• 7:17
The Detective: Just the break. Eleven o'clock, the station break. Walk me through that.
• 7:21
Vern Corliss: Simple as anything. The organ cue comes up, I pot the studio mic down — off, dead to the room — and we run the break music to the top of the hour. Elgin liked to talk right up against that cue. [chuckles] Cut him off mid-word some nights. He'd laugh about it after.
• 7:40
The Detective: Off the whole break?
• 7:41
Vern Corliss: Every second of it. Top of the hour I bring him back up, and he says good night to the city.
• 7:48
The Detective: So through the break, Moss's microphone is off.
• 7:51
Vern Corliss: Off — not down, off. There's a difference and I mind it careful. This switch here, this one — that's the studio mic, and this hand takes it down every single night I've sat this chair. My own hand. Eighteen months on this board and that mic has never once been live through a break. Not once. Here — I'll give you the break, right now. Listen.
• 8:18
Vern Corliss: There. That's your break. Not a thing to hear, and never has been. That's exactly what the whole city got Tuesday, same as any night.
• 8:28
The Detective: And there it was — the clean, total nothing he wiped off the air with his own hand every night of his life. Except Tuesday, a thousand people had heard something crawl around inside that nothing. Which left two doors, and only two. Either a thousand strangers were all wrong together — or the hand that swore the mic was dead was the same hand that had quietly brought it to life.
• 8:55
  The Detective: Except Tuesday.
• 8:56
Vern Corliss: Tuesday was the same as every night before it. My hand doesn't shake, detective. Whatever those people think they heard, I promise you it did not come off my board.
• 9:08
The Detective: I thanked him and left him there behind his glass, cool as a church in all that heat. He'd told me the truth, every word of it — the break was dead every night, killed clean by one pair of hands. He just didn't seem to notice he'd handed me the case doing it. In this whole city, the only man who could have opened that microphone was the one man swearing on his own hand it could not be opened.
• 9:41
Vivian Cade: ...and the harbor lights go dark on me, the way that you swore they never would...
• 9:47
Vivian Cade: —oh. They don't generally let a soul past the glass while I'm working. [laughs] So you'd be the one Gus hired to put poor Elgin to rest nice and quiet.
• 9:58
The Detective: The last note hung a second and then let go of the room, and the studio went back to being a hot little box with a microphone standing in the middle of it. Vivian Cade sang the late spot — the last live voice this station sent out before the eleven o'clock break. Before Moss. Before whatever it was that crawled through it. She looked me over the way a cat looks at a door it's already decided it owns.
• 10:29
The Detective: You were on the air Tuesday right before the break. Right before Moss.
• 10:33
Vivian Cade: Right before Moss. Every night that was mine — the last song before the dead man got the last word. And if you had any sense at all, you'd spend less of Gus's money on a tired old heart and more of it on who wanted that heart stopped. Elgin made enemies for twenty years. Every sponsor he needled, every name he ever said out loud on that program — you think they're all grieving tonight?
• 11:04
The Detective: You sound like a woman with a list.
• 11:06
Vivian Cade: I'm a woman with a spot to keep, detective, and I mean to keep it. Elgin's gone, and somebody inherits that last half hour now. I'd hate for it to land on whoever got curious about me.
• 11:20
The Detective: Names would help me more than a warning.
• 11:22
Vivian Cade: I sing. I don't keep books on the dead.
• 11:25
The Detective: Then just tell me where you were when the break came.
• 11:29
Vivian Cade: Where I always am. I finished my number, I stepped back off the mic, and the red light came up for the break. It's a dark little wait, that stretch. You stand there in the quiet and you can hear the whole building tick.
• 11:46
Vivian Cade: Funny — now you make me think of it — the monitor light. That little red bulb up over the booth door, the one that means the board's gone live to the room. It winked. Just once, on and then off again, right there in the dead middle of the break. I didn't think a thing of it at the time. Vern's always riding that board of his.
• 12:14
The Detective: She'd handed me two things and didn't know one from the other. The list of dead men's enemies was a door she was holding open for me, held open a good deal too wide. But the light — that little red light she'd forgotten to lie about — pointed the other way entirely. Straight back through the glass, to a board that was never supposed to be live at all, and the one calm pair of hands that had sworn to me it wasn't.
• 13:17
Flynn: Careful — I've got them in the order it happened, and the Chronicle morgue doesn't let its clippings walk twice. Look while you can. Every scrap on this desk is your board man, Vern Corliss. Only ten years back he answered to another name.
• 13:34
The Detective: Slow down, Flynn. A different name doing what?
• 13:37
Flynn: Armed robbery, a stretch upstate, the whole ugly page. Then he walks out, takes a new name, learns the control board, and never puts a foot wrong again. Twelve years clean, built brick by brick. And Moss dug up every inch of it.
• 13:53
The Detective: Flynn of the Chronicle worked a story the way other men worked a slot machine — feed it enough nickels of somebody else's trouble and once in a while it paid out a headline. Past midnight, and the newsroom still ticked and muttered around us, too hot to sleep like the rest of the town. He'd spread a dead man's secret across the blotter and he was grinning down at it.
• 14:18
The Detective: So Moss had him cold. Why sit on it?
• 14:21
Flynn: Because he wasn't going to bury Corliss with it — he was going to bless him. The segment was half-written; I saw the pages in his desk drawer. 'The man who climbed out of his own grave,' he called it. Moss meant to stand Corliss up in front of the whole city at eleven o'clock and tell them he was saved.
• 14:41
The Detective: A man's whole buried past, read out to everybody with a radio. Whether he wanted it read or not.
• 14:48
Flynn: Now you're seeing it. And here's why Thorpe's paying you to write lullabies to a thousand strangers.
• 14:55
Flynn: A man dies of a bad heart, that's a sad night and a tidy obituary. A man murdered live on this air, mid-break, on the station's own watch? That's the license pulled. That's every door in the building padlocked by fall.
• 15:10
The Detective: And the owner would rather it stayed a bad heart.
• 15:13
Flynn: The owner would rather it stayed nothing at all, and he'll see to it. This business swallows anyone who won't be what the sponsor needs. A few years back a singer lost her slot cold — wouldn't carry tales for the men who paid the bills. One week she was on the air, the next she never was.
• 15:33
The Detective: So that was the shape under the shape. Moss hadn't gone digging to ruin Vern Corliss. He'd gone digging to praise him — to hand him back to Calloway Bay wrapped in a bow, saved and forgiven, whether the man wanted it or not. And the station that carried the microphone would sooner pour the whole night down a storm drain than let this town hear a killing had gone out over its air. Two men deciding what the city was allowed to forgive. Neither of them had thought to ask Corliss.
• 16:08
The Detective: Three witnesses, Corliss — a chair going over, a woman's voice, breaking glass. Not one of them heard the same thing, and every one of them heard it in the same three seconds of your dead break. A sound only crawls out under that break music if the mic is live. And you swore to me yours is the only hand that opens it.
• 16:30
Vern Corliss: People hear all kinds of things in a heat like this. You said it yourself, detective — a thousand ears, and no two of them agree on a single sound.
• 16:40
The Detective: The booth had been hoarding the day's heat since noon and it breathed the whole of it back at us through the glass. Corliss hadn't moved. He sat that board the way a man sits a confessional he has already decided he will never once kneel in — patient, certain, waiting for me to run out of air before he did.
• 17:01
The Detective: A light went live over your booth door in the middle of that break, Vern. Somebody saw it wink — the board going hot to the room, once, when nothing at all was supposed to be live. You didn't open that mic to be heard. You opened it and forgot it.
• 17:17
Vern Corliss: You don't forget a switch. Not on this board. Not this hand.
• 17:24
The Detective: You forgot it because your hands were busy. Moss was going to put you on the air. He was going to tell the whole city what you were — and then tell them you were forgiven.
• 17:34
Vern Corliss: Forgiven. [scoffs] You say it like a gift. You know what that man found? Everything I spent twelve years burying — and he smiled at me. Said he wanted to put me on. Stand me up in front of every open window in this city, read out my name, my number, the whole rotten page, and then hand me back to them saved. A man climbs out of a hole quiet, detective. Quiet is the whole prize. Twelve years I was nobody's second thought and I earned every dull hour of it. He was going to make me a story — a thing the whole town owns, points at on the streetcar, chews over at supper. I would sooner be a killer no living soul suspects than a saved man every stranger in Calloway Bay gets to feel warm about.
• 18:27
The Detective: So you stopped his heart for him.
• 18:29
Vern Corliss: It was the break — mic's dead, nobody listening. I only meant to talk him out of it, and he wouldn't hear me. Then my hands were on him and my elbow was on that switch, and I never felt it go. The dance tune covered the rest; I didn't know it went out till the letters came.
• 18:49
The Detective: He'd handed me all of it — the why, the how, the hand — and none of it written down anywhere but the hot air between us. I had the truth entire now. And the only thing in that building that could prove a word of it sat pressed into a wax disc, behind a locked pane of glass, in a cabinet the man who hired me had already told me to leave shut.
• 19:17
Dale: —no, let me finish the arithmetic, because you're not going to like the total. That engineer was a dead man the minute Moss dug him up, sunshine. Praise or a pine box — once somebody found what he buried, the quiet was over for good. There was never a Tuesday where that man walked away with his little life still whole.
• 19:41
The Detective: Somebody still has the truth of it now. I do.
• 19:44
Dale: And Gus Thorpe will smile at every word of it and stamp the file 'heart attack.' A killing on his air puts forty people on the bread line — so a killing there will simply not have happened.
• 19:59
The Detective: Then the town goes on thinking a good man's heart just quit.
• 20:02
Dale: The town stays exactly as deaf as it woke up. And you push this, and you don't just lose the check. You lose the one house in this city that ever put your voice on the air and called it a decent thing. And after all of it, the truth still doesn't get heard.
• 20:24
The Detective: The office was dark but for the desk lamp, and the fan had quit on us hours ago. Dale sat on the corner of the desk the way she did when she'd decided I needed talking to more than the client needed serving. Everything she said was true, and she said it the way you tell a man the bridge is out — not to stop him, only so he can't say later that nobody told him. I was already reaching for my coat.
• 20:53
The Detective: Somebody in this city ought to hear it once. Even if it's only the once.
• 20:57
Dale: So that's the bill, then. The account, the good word, and the only room in Calloway Bay that was ever kind to you — all spent on a truth that gets buried the second after you say it. [sighs] Take the gray coat. It's still an oven out there, and you're no good to anybody boiled.
• 21:18
The Detective: She was still naming the price when I got my arm through the sleeve. She was right about the whole of it — she usually is, which is the part that wears a man down. I took my hat off the hook anyway. The station was still open, and the night was still too hot for a soul in it to sleep.
• 21:43
The Detective: The heat hadn't broken in three days, and it didn't break for me walking back through those doors. The mail sacks were gone from the wall — somebody had already begun wiping the night out of the building like a spill off a clean counter. Gus Thorpe met me in the studio doorway with the face of a man who'd spent his whole afternoon on the telephone with people who owned a great deal more than he did. Behind him Studio A stood empty and lit, the mic alone in the middle of it, the sign above the door dark and waiting on the hour.
• 22:17
Gus Thorpe: I'll pay you for every letter you wrote, and I thank you for them. But the job closes tonight. The doctor's finding stands — Elgin's heart, God rest him, and nothing under it. That's what those thousand people get, in your good patient hand.
• 22:38
The Detective: A man was murdered in this building, Thorpe. I can give you the who, the how, and the why. I have all of it.
• 22:46
Gus Thorpe: I know you do — and that's exactly what I can't have. A killing on this air isn't about Corliss; it's the license, it's forty families put out on the street. The disc goes in the vault and the vault stays locked. Corliss is being seen to — quiet, off the books.
• 23:08
The Detective: And the thousand people who wrote in. They just get the heart.
• 23:12
Gus Thorpe: They get peace, which is more than the truth would ever give them. As for you — that kind word this house paid you once is spent, and after tonight you're not welcome past that door. It's nothing personal. It's the license.
• 23:35
The Detective: And there it was, the whole quiet machinery of forgetting, humming along nice in the heat. A stopped heart on the record, a disc under lock, a man being seen to, and me shown the door for the crime of knowing better. Past Thorpe's shoulder the mic still stood alone in its light, and up over the booth the little sign had just come red. On the air. Out past the glass a whole city sat at its open windows, still awake, still listening, because it was still too hot to sleep.
• 24:09
Gus Thorpe: What are you — no. No, get away from that microphone —
• 24:12
The Detective: Elgin Moss was murdered on this air. He didn't die of any —
• 24:16
Gus Thorpe: That's enough — cut him! Get the music up, get it up now —
• 24:20
The Detective: The switch went under Thorpe's hand and the city got a swell of dance music where the rest of it should have been. Three seconds. That was the whole broadcast — three seconds of the truth pitched out an open window into a town too hot to sleep, and then wax, and organ, and nothing. The sign over the door still burned red above my head. On the air. In Calloway Bay a man can be right about every last thing and still get about three seconds of it onto the wire before somebody louder throws the switch.
