- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is A Guide on the
- 0:29Side, How to Have Joyful Spiritual Conversations at
- 0:33Work.
- 0:35So, now in the fall, I'm seeing the
- 0:38leaves turn red and brown and gold, and
- 0:43also seeing some of the flowers that were
- 0:44blooming before start to wilt, and remembering that
- 0:48yet another summer has gone by without any
- 0:51flowers or vegetables in my front yard or
- 0:54back yard or side yard.
- 0:55I am not the world's best gardener.
- 0:58Katie used to do more gardening a couple
- 1:00homes ago for us.
- 1:01We had like a tomato garden that she
- 1:03managed, but she then went through grad school
- 1:05and kind of got out of the habit,
- 1:06and it's, you know, not always the best
- 1:09for her back to be bending over.
- 1:11So, she wants me to build some elevated,
- 1:13some raised garden beds, you know, and I've
- 1:16said that I'll do that, but I still
- 1:17haven't gotten around to it.
- 1:18And we just, we just have grass, we
- 1:20have boring grass, that's all we have.
- 1:23And part of this is a lack of
- 1:25effort and intention on my part, yes, but
- 1:28part of it is about the environment of
- 1:31our yard.
- 1:32See, because I tried to plant flowers when
- 1:34we first moved in four years ago, and
- 1:37they just didn't take, and I realized it
- 1:38was that the soil wasn't in very good
- 1:40shape.
- 1:41So, Katie, you know, had ideas about this,
- 1:43just like, well, we can treat the soil.
- 1:44So, now every spring, in theory, if I
- 1:48remember, I go and I get some weed
- 1:51killer and fertilizer stuff from Menards that can
- 1:55help the soil grow.
- 1:56And so this year, I dutifully was, you
- 2:00know, pushing the little spreader thing all across
- 2:03the backyard.
- 2:04And I was so proud of myself.
- 2:06And then I got all done and I
- 2:07was going to the shed and there was
- 2:09still a whole bunch of the weed killer
- 2:10fertilizer stuff left over.
- 2:12And as I turned to try and push
- 2:14the spreader back into the shed, it tipped
- 2:18over and spilled all that extra stuff in
- 2:20one little, like, square foot patch of the
- 2:23yard.
- 2:24And I tried to clean it up.
- 2:26You know, I had my work gloves and
- 2:27tried to, you know, scoop it all up
- 2:29and put it back in the spreader and
- 2:30then get the spreader back in the shed.
- 2:32But that patch just died, is just completely
- 2:36devoid of any kind of biological life.
- 2:40I poisoned the soil.
- 2:42It was terrible.
- 2:42It was overload of weed killer.
- 2:45I looked at it today.
- 2:46It's still dead.
- 2:47And I just, you know, I was feeling
- 2:51good.
- 2:51I was feeling good for a minute there
- 2:53about dutifully preparing the soil, and then I
- 2:56still just made a mess of it.
- 3:00OK, I have hope.
- 3:01I have hope maybe next spring, next summer,
- 3:03we'll prepare the soil again and we'll plant
- 3:06some flowers or maybe I'll actually build those
- 3:08raised garden beds and we'll do the vegetable
- 3:10thing.
- 3:11And there will be a wonderful redemption arc
- 3:13to this story.
- 3:14But for right now, as a gardener, I
- 3:17feel like I have failed when it comes
- 3:19to environment.
- 3:22I have not made my yard a hospitable
- 3:26place for growing things, maybe for some grass,
- 3:30but that's it.
- 3:31OK, what does this have to do with
- 3:33evangelism?
- 3:34What does this have to do with being
- 3:36a guide on the side for our friends
- 3:38and neighbors, for our co-workers who maybe
- 3:40would be open to exploring the way of
- 3:42Jesus at some point?
- 3:45Before we think about having conversations about Jesus,
- 3:48before we think about sharing the good news,
- 3:51we want to think about, is our life
- 3:54a hospitable place for spiritual conversations to grow?
- 3:59So before we think about the planting aspect,
- 4:03so to speak, how do we sow the
- 4:04seeds of the gospel, to use a metaphor
- 4:06that Jesus loved, we got to think about,
- 4:09well, what about the environment, right?
- 4:12Is my life an environment that's conducive to
- 4:16these kind of conversations occurring?
- 4:18So in this episode, I want to look
- 4:20at what are four things you can do
- 4:22to make the garden of your life more
- 4:25hospitable for spiritual conversations with people who don't
- 4:29yet know Jesus?
- 4:30OK, four things.
- 4:31And I'm mostly stealing other people's ideas, which
- 4:33is a wonderful thing to do in evangelism,
- 4:35just like anything else.
- 4:37Look to people who are more experienced and
- 4:39more mature than you are in the faith.
- 4:42So I'll try and cite my sources here.
- 4:43But the first one is just a really
- 4:46basic concept, doesn't come from any particular thinker,
- 4:49and that's do well at your job.
- 4:52That's the first thing you can do in
- 4:54your work environment to make your life hospitable
- 4:57for spiritual conversations.
- 4:58Now, here's why.
- 4:59If you don't do well at your job,
- 5:02that is a terrible witness.
- 5:04You know, if your co-workers are unable
- 5:07to depend on you, if they can't turn
- 5:10to you for help when they need it,
- 5:11if collaborating with you is impossible, then if
- 5:14there's ever an opportunity to talk about spiritual
- 5:16things, their attitude is going to be, well,
- 5:19why would I listen to this person?
- 5:20Right.
- 5:21This person doesn't have life figured out.
- 5:22This person doesn't even know how to be
- 5:23a good team member.
- 5:24OK, so now none of us are perfect.
- 5:27Right.
- 5:27But as Jesus taught, we need to own
- 5:29that.
- 5:30We need to make amends.
- 5:31We need to ask for forgiveness.
- 5:32We need to practice reconciliation when things occur
- 5:36that were our fault and that were us
- 5:39not hitting the mark.
- 5:40But in general, if we're attempting to do
- 5:43a good job at our job and we're
- 5:45in a job that makes sense for us
- 5:46to have, it is possible by God's grace
- 5:48for us to do well at our job.
- 5:51And so that's the first point.
- 5:53Just do well at your job.
- 5:54That is the starting point for any other
- 5:56opportunities that might arise at work related to
- 5:59the chance to speak about Jesus.
- 6:02OK.
- 6:03Two, make an intentional effort to get to
- 6:06know people.
- 6:07Now, this might seem obvious, but it bears
- 6:10stating explicitly.
- 6:12There are a lot of people who approach
- 6:15work as something I've got to get done.
- 6:17And if they happen to meet anybody else
- 6:19in the course of doing their work, it's
- 6:21just incidental.
- 6:22It's just like something that maybe happens, maybe
- 6:24doesn't not really their focus.
- 6:26It's more about like, OK, we got to
- 6:27we got to get the work done.
- 6:28Of course, if I have to talk to
- 6:29people to get the work done, then great.
- 6:31Otherwise, we'll we'll see if it happens.
- 6:33This is a bad approach.
- 6:35This is not a hospitable approach.
- 6:38This does not make the garden of your
- 6:39life a place where things can grow.
- 6:42And I want to hasten to add, this
- 6:43is not about whether you're introverted or extroverted.
- 6:46It's about whether you're hospitable or passive.
- 6:50OK, so you can be a hospitable introvert
- 6:52where you're you're managing your energy and you
- 6:55know that sometimes you need solitude and you're
- 6:57intentionally protecting that time.
- 6:59At the same time, you're still keeping an
- 7:01eye out for when can I be relationally
- 7:05present to someone else?
- 7:05When can I give that gift of energy,
- 7:08even though it's costly to me to love
- 7:10the people around me?
- 7:11If you're an extrovert, maybe the interacting with
- 7:13other people energizes you.
- 7:15That's great.
- 7:15OK, but this isn't just about conviviality.
- 7:18This isn't just about, haha, you know, I'm
- 7:20talking with people and it's great.
- 7:21It's, again, that attentive presence to other people.
- 7:25Am I looking around me for ways that
- 7:27I can be present in a way that
- 7:28actually loves and serves somebody else?
- 7:31Am I being intentional about getting to know
- 7:33the people around me?
- 7:35OK, so this can look really simple.
- 7:38It's like when you walk in in the
- 7:40morning, say good morning, ask your co-workers
- 7:43how their weekend were.
- 7:44Now, if you work remotely, right, it's a
- 7:48little more challenging, right?
- 7:48But you can still figure out what are
- 7:50those ways to connect?
- 7:51Is it if you're on the call early
- 7:53before everybody gets there and you and the
- 7:56other person, it's like, OK, that that's kind
- 7:58of the equivalent of you walking into your
- 8:00cubicle in a physical space.
- 8:01It's hey, how's it going?
- 8:03How was your weekend?
- 8:04Right.
- 8:04Like do the small talk thing.
- 8:06And I know some people are allergic to
- 8:07small talk and they hate small talk because
- 8:09small talk can seem so superficial.
- 8:11But here's the best case version of small
- 8:14talk.
- 8:15Small talk at its best communicates I care
- 8:19about you and I want you to be
- 8:21well in this world.
- 8:22Right now, if your co-worker got on
- 8:25the same Zoom or Teams call as you
- 8:27and it was just the two of you
- 8:28for a couple of minutes and you said,
- 8:30hey, you know, I care about you and
- 8:32I want you to be well in this
- 8:33world.
- 8:33That would be kind of awkward, probably.
- 8:35I mean, unless they were a really close
- 8:36friend of yours.
- 8:37OK, so like you can't just explicitly say
- 8:40that.
- 8:40And so instead you say, how are you
- 8:42doing?
- 8:42How was your weekend?
- 8:43That's how we say I care about you
- 8:46and I hope that you are well in
- 8:47this world.
- 8:48Small talk is an expression of love at
- 8:50its best.
- 8:51OK, and if you hate small talk, come
- 8:53up with something else that still works to
- 8:55get to know the people around you in
- 8:56a deeper way, faster, with greater vulnerability.
- 8:59That's wonderful, too, if you can find a
- 9:01way to swing it.
- 9:02OK, so one, do well at your job
- 9:06to intentionally get to know the people around
- 9:09you.
- 9:11Three, merge your universes.
- 9:13OK, this is a phrase that I'm taking
- 9:15from an evangelist named Sam Chan and from
- 9:18his book, How to Talk About Jesus Without
- 9:20Being That Guy.
- 9:22Sam is an evangelist in Australia and my
- 9:25church community, City of Light in Aurora, Illinois,
- 9:28read this book together, or at least our
- 9:30leadership team did this summer.
- 9:32And it's a wonderful book with kind of
- 9:34eight tips about evangelism.
- 9:36And the first tip is merge your universes.
- 9:41OK, so I want to I want to
- 9:42read a couple introductory quotes and then get
- 9:46into what Sam Chan means by that.
- 9:47So Sam Chan writes, I once heard Timothy
- 9:51Keller compare our work of evangelism with Elijah's
- 9:55work of building the altar at Mount Carmel
- 9:57in First Kings 18.
- 9:59Elijah built the altar, but it was God
- 10:01who sent the fire.
- 10:03Elijah couldn't send the fire.
- 10:05In the same way, when it comes to
- 10:06evangelism, it is God who sends the fire.
- 10:09God pours out his spirit.
- 10:10God opens the heart of the person hearing
- 10:12the good news.
- 10:13Acts 16, 14, God sovereignly and supernaturally rebirths
- 10:17the person, moving them from darkness to light,
- 10:19from death to life.
- 10:20Ephesians 2, 5, only God can send the
- 10:23fire.
- 10:24But as Keller points out, Elijah still had
- 10:26to build the altar in the same way.
- 10:29We also have our part to play in
- 10:31evangelism.
- 10:33Isn't that a beautiful image, a beautiful metaphor?
- 10:36God is the one that supernaturally moves in
- 10:38people's hearts through the Holy Spirit.
- 10:40God's one that sends the fire into people's
- 10:42lives.
- 10:42But we can build the altar or to
- 10:45kind of shift back to the metaphor I
- 10:46was using.
- 10:47God's the one that brings the growth in
- 10:49the garden.
- 10:49We can't make things grow.
- 10:50We can't decide whether the seed sprouts or
- 10:52not.
- 10:53But are we making the garden of our
- 10:55lives hospitable for spiritual conversations to grow with
- 10:59people who don't yet know Jesus?
- 11:01Okay.
- 11:02So that's, that's just kind of an overarching
- 11:03image that I wanted to share from Sam
- 11:05Chan.
- 11:05Now his little tidbit, his tip on merging
- 11:08your universes.
- 11:10Sam writes, one of the major reasons our
- 11:14friends aren't Christians is that they don't belong
- 11:16to a community of friends who also believe
- 11:18in Jesus.
- 11:19It's not primarily because they haven't heard the
- 11:21gospel.
- 11:22They probably haven't, but they already think they
- 11:24know what you believe.
- 11:26It's not because there's not enough evidence for
- 11:27the Christian faith, because no matter how much
- 11:30evidence you produce, they'll explain it away.
- 11:32In many cases, the number one reason our
- 11:34friends aren't Christians is that they don't have
- 11:36any other Christian friends.
- 11:38So what we need to do is introduce
- 11:40them into a community of Christian friends.
- 11:43How do we do this?
- 11:44By getting our Christian friends to become friends
- 11:46with our non-Christian friends, merge our universes.
- 11:51Typically as Christians, we have two separate universes
- 11:54of friends.
- 11:55We have a universe of Christian friends and
- 11:57we have another universe of non-Christian friends.
- 11:59We keep these two universes separate from each
- 12:01other.
- 12:02When our Christian friends go to the movies,
- 12:04we go along with them.
- 12:05When our non-Christian friends have a barbecue,
- 12:07we go along with them.
- 12:08But what we need to do is merge
- 12:10our universes.
- 12:11So when our Christian friends go to the
- 12:13movies, we invite our non-Christian friends along.
- 12:15When our non-Christian friends have a barbecue,
- 12:17we bring some of our Christian friends along.
- 12:19Bit by bit, our Christian friends will become
- 12:22friends with our non-Christian friends.
- 12:25Okay.
- 12:25This is such an empowering and beautiful thing
- 12:28when it happens.
- 12:29Katie and I, in our lives, are experiencing
- 12:31this right now.
- 12:32Some of you may know, if you're local,
- 12:34that we have started a kind of quasi
- 12:36-monthly movie night.
- 12:38And rather than just inviting our Christian or
- 12:40church friends or just inviting our non-Christian
- 12:42friends, we're inviting everybody and they're getting to
- 12:44know each other.
- 12:45And it's so fun for me because there
- 12:47are things that our friends have in common
- 12:49with each other that I know nothing about.
- 12:50It's like we had a close Christian friend
- 12:52recently who Katie and I have known for
- 12:55years, recently got to hang out with her
- 12:57and her husband at the new home they
- 12:59bought, lovely Christian friendship, praying for them, grateful
- 13:02for them, or a non-Christian friend that
- 13:04Katie has known for years since middle school,
- 13:06friend from middle school.
- 13:07The Christian friend and the non-Christian friend
- 13:08suddenly start talking about some anime show I've
- 13:10never heard of and bonding with each other.
- 13:12And I'm just like, I'm stepping back.
- 13:14And like Sam Chan in the back of
- 13:15my mind is like cheering me on.
- 13:17Like, yes, Chris, you're merging your universes.
- 13:19Do it, do it.
- 13:21Okay.
- 13:22This is so beautiful when it happens.
- 13:23And it's not rocket science.
- 13:25It's not that complicated.
- 13:26Think about where you have some non-Christians
- 13:28that are connected with where you have some
- 13:31Christian friends that are connected with you.
- 13:32What's the way you can bring them universes
- 13:34together?
- 13:35Is it a movie night at work?
- 13:36Is it drinks after work?
- 13:38Right.
- 13:38Can you go along and spend time with
- 13:41other people?
- 13:42Now there might be a caution or pushback
- 13:45here, which is, well, okay.
- 13:46Sometimes there are certain environments of non-Christians
- 13:49hanging out that may not be totally socially
- 13:51healthy.
- 13:52Like how raucous or vulgar is that, you
- 13:55know, time of drinks after work.
- 13:57And for this, I think it's really important
- 13:59for us to imitate Jesus example.
- 14:01So let's look at Mark chapter two, starting
- 14:04in verse 13.
- 14:06Once again, Jesus went out beside the lake,
- 14:09a large crowd came to him and he
- 14:11began to teach them.
- 14:12As he walked along, he saw Levi, son
- 14:14of Alpheus sitting at the tax collector's booth.
- 14:16Follow me, Jesus told him and Levi got
- 14:19up and followed him.
- 14:20While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house,
- 14:22many tax collectors and sinners were eating with
- 14:25him and his disciples.
- 14:26For there were many who followed him.
- 14:28When the teachers of the law who were
- 14:30Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and
- 14:32tax collectors, they asked his disciples, why does
- 14:35he eat with tax collectors and sinners?
- 14:37On hearing this, Jesus said to them, it
- 14:39is not the healthy who need a doctor,
- 14:41but the sick.
- 14:42I have not come to call the righteous,
- 14:44but sinners.
- 14:47Okay.
- 14:47You see what Jesus has done here?
- 14:49There's actually kind of four groups of people
- 14:51here that Jesus has connected with, right?
- 14:53Levi's the one who's hosting the party.
- 14:56And so Levi has tax collector friends, work
- 14:58friends of Levi's.
- 14:59But then there's also quote unquote, sinners, tax
- 15:03collectors and sinners.
- 15:03So other people who are not religious insiders
- 15:07within that particular context, right, the equivalent of
- 15:11non-Christians for us, they're hanging out and
- 15:15they're eating with Jesus and his disciples.
- 15:16So then you have Jesus's disciples, folks that
- 15:19are insiders in the sense that they've committed
- 15:21to the way of Jesus, right, and they're
- 15:24there at Levi's house hanging out.
- 15:26And then interestingly, you've got the Pharisees, right?
- 15:28The teachers of the law who are Pharisees
- 15:30saw him eating with the sinners and tax
- 15:32collectors.
- 15:33So it seems like the Pharisees maybe didn't
- 15:35join the party, but they were at least
- 15:36close enough to see that it was happening
- 15:37and then like sidle up to the disciples
- 15:39and be like, Hey, what, what gives you,
- 15:40or why are you having this party with
- 15:42these people?
- 15:43Okay.
- 15:44You see how Jesus is merging his universes,
- 15:46right?
- 15:47There's this, there's this universe of Levi's friends,
- 15:50right?
- 15:50From work and, and other centers.
- 15:51Then there's this universe of Jesus disciples and
- 15:54other religious insiders like the Pharisees, but who
- 15:56are maybe skeptical about Jesus and Jesus is
- 15:58merging them all together at a party at
- 16:00Levi's house.
- 16:01And when the Pharisees ask about it, he
- 16:04goes and he talks with them too.
- 16:05Jesus is even still kind of drawing the
- 16:07Pharisees and trying to get them to see
- 16:08things in a different light.
- 16:10He's saying, look, it's not the healthy who
- 16:11need a doctor.
- 16:12It's the sick.
- 16:13Yes.
- 16:14People, their lives are dominated by darkness and
- 16:16sin.
- 16:16That's why they need the presence of God.
- 16:19So let's make sure we're here.
- 16:20To extend it to them.
- 16:22So we want to imitate Jesus as we
- 16:24think about merging our universes.
- 16:25That being said, there is something special about
- 16:27inviting non-Christians into a Christian space.
- 16:30So like, I love the fact that Katie
- 16:31and I get to host in our own
- 16:32home, a kind of Christian space, our non
- 16:34-Christian and Christian friends together.
- 16:36So that's something you can think about too.
- 16:37How do you merge your universes in your
- 16:40life?
- 16:41Okay.
- 16:42So, uh, four.
- 16:45Talk to your non-Christian friends, like your
- 16:47Christian friends.
- 16:48And I want to give credit for this
- 16:49one.
- 16:49This is from a leader in the ministry
- 16:51called crew named Heather Holloman.
- 16:53I heard her speak at a conference in
- 16:562019.
- 16:56And this was what kind of one of
- 16:57her evangelism tips was, you know, when you're
- 17:00with your Christian friends and something goes really
- 17:01well, you might say something like, you know,
- 17:03praise the Lord, right?
- 17:04She's like, well, when you're with your non
- 17:06-Christian friends, say it anyways, right?
- 17:08Even though they don't believe in the Lord
- 17:09still say the same stuff, right?
- 17:11Or if you're talking about something that God
- 17:13has done in your life, share what God
- 17:14has done in your life, even with your
- 17:15non-Christian friends.
- 17:17I have found this to be liberating and
- 17:19helpful to not self censor when it comes
- 17:21to my own faith.
- 17:23Now, of course you got to use wisdom
- 17:25and discretion, right?
- 17:25Are there certain kinds of conversations that maybe
- 17:28it wouldn't make sense to have with a
- 17:29non-Christian, like some really inside baseball, Christian
- 17:31stuff, or things that, you know, are controversial
- 17:33and you haven't had a chance to build
- 17:34trust and to contextualize them yet.
- 17:36Sure.
- 17:37Sure.
- 17:38But just be yourself, be your Christian self
- 17:40around your non-Christian friends.
- 17:42I've, I've kind of developed a reputation for
- 17:44this at the food bank.
- 17:44I say praise the Lord a lot in
- 17:46meetings with just mixes of people.
- 17:48Whenever something goes well, I'm like, praise the
- 17:49Lord.
- 17:49And people like chuckle.
- 17:51They're like, there's Chris.
- 17:52He's so religious.
- 17:52He's saying praise the Lord.
- 17:53Right.
- 17:54But it's like, it's just, it's very genuine
- 17:55for me.
- 17:56Right.
- 17:56And so again, you and your personality in
- 17:59a way that's genuine for you.
- 18:00Don't feel like you always have to censor
- 18:01yourself around your non-Christian friends.
- 18:03Again, that's another way to make the garden
- 18:05of your life hospitable for spiritual conversations.
- 18:08When people realize like, oh, that's part of
- 18:10who you are.
- 18:11Then as they get to know you because
- 18:13you're doing your work well, and because you're
- 18:15getting to know them and because you're merging
- 18:17the universes, they'll know, oh, this is a
- 18:21person who's interested in spiritual things.
- 18:22And if they ever have some curiosity, you're
- 18:25that much closer to having a joyful spiritual
- 18:27conversation at work.
- 18:28And we'll talk more about that next time.
- 18:32Lord Jesus, thank you that you came to
- 18:38love the sick, not the healthy.
- 18:41That you are the physician of souls and
- 18:43you bring healing and life to people who
- 18:46don't deserve it like us.
- 18:48Make us emissaries who bring the light of
- 18:51your presence into dark places and who love
- 18:53everybody around us, regardless of where they're coming
- 18:56from.
- 18:57Show us how to do well in our
- 18:59work, how to get to know people, how
- 19:01to merge our universes, and how to just
- 19:04be our true selves in our friendships and
- 19:06relationships with coworkers and others who don't yet
- 19:09know you.
- 19:11Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 19:13do our work with you.
- 19:19Thanks for listening.
