- 0:00Speaker 1: Head out to the Ramos Law hotline car accident you
- 0:02Speaker 1: need Ramos Law Medical doctor and Attorney ramas Law dot com.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Jeff LEGWALLLLDOVESPN dot com joins us as always on Thursdays.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Hi, Jeff, Morning fellows, Jeff more.
- 0:13Speaker 3: On a scale of one too deeply offended, how offended
- 0:16Speaker 3: were you upon knowledge I yesterday ripped sports writers for
- 0:21Speaker 3: being holier than now in a lot of different forms
- 0:23Speaker 3: and a lot of different reasons. Were you offended by
- 0:25Speaker 3: my comments?
- 0:27Speaker 4: I was at a zero on the offensive scale because
- 0:30Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Because you shouldn't be offended, Jeff, because you're.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Not wonder I was unbothered because Vic and I have
- 0:36Speaker 4: had that conversation face to face.
- 0:39Speaker 2: He Vic tells me what I'm boring, so I'm always
- 0:42Speaker 2: ready for Oh.
- 0:43Speaker 3: It's not about being boring.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I don't mind boring.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I mean, I mean talking down to which silty of
- 0:49Speaker 3: all the time. But you know, the sports writers do
- 0:52Speaker 3: it better than anybody, not all of them, not all
- 0:55Speaker 3: of them.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Some of that was that was before we all had
- 0:58Speaker 4: to go on TV to serve. Back in the day,
- 1:01Speaker 4: you could be sanctimonious about it all.
- 1:04Speaker 2: But Jeff stories.
- 1:07Speaker 5: Was that was that all the big sports runners of
- 1:10Speaker 5: the forties and fifties, who got all the stories? And
- 1:13Speaker 5: you know, if you didn't read you know, Jim Smith
- 1:15Speaker 5: in the New York Times, you know you didn't get
- 1:17Speaker 5: the story when did all of this? And no offense
- 1:20Speaker 5: to writers, because some are really really great, but some
- 1:23Speaker 5: men they just they think that they are like the
- 1:25Speaker 5: gatekeepers to all the world, and it just I don't
- 1:28Speaker 5: know whatever.
- 1:30Speaker 4: You know, I think if you're on a beat which look,
- 1:33Speaker 4: I've always I tell students this when I speak to
- 1:37Speaker 4: students or if I'm teaching a seminar or something. I've
- 1:41Speaker 4: always just been a beat writer, you know. I've always
- 1:44Speaker 4: covered one team in one place my whole career. You know,
- 1:47Speaker 4: this will be my forty first season as a beat writer.
- 1:52Speaker 4: I've never been a national guy or whatever. So my
- 1:58Speaker 4: vantage point is back in the day, you know, even
- 2:02Speaker 4: when I first started the beat writer, there weren't many
- 2:07Speaker 4: people out there.
- 2:08Speaker 2: You know, as the out as.
- 2:10Speaker 4: The Internet arrived and the outlets increased, then that changed
- 2:14Speaker 4: the dynamic.
- 2:15Speaker 2: But back in the day, it was a you know.
- 2:18Speaker 4: When I covered the Steelers, for example, uh, my newspaper
- 2:23Speaker 4: chose not to but the media could be on the
- 2:27Speaker 4: charter with the Steelers. You know, that isn't done anymore,
- 2:32Speaker 4: you know, for decades, but you know, it was a
- 2:36Speaker 4: different you know. And even when teams traveled, you know,
- 2:40Speaker 4: in the Eastern time zone by train, a lot of them,
- 2:43Speaker 4: the beat writers, no matter the sport, were with them,
- 2:47Speaker 4: you know. So it's just a different, different time. And
- 2:51Speaker 4: when you cover a beat, you do feel a little
- 2:54Speaker 4: bit sort of, you know, you want to make sure
- 2:58Speaker 4: you're right, you want to make sure you're you're sourced
- 3:01Speaker 4: and all those things. And I think sometimes people get
- 3:04Speaker 4: protective of it, you know, along the way, because you know,
- 3:09Speaker 4: it's just part of your life in a big way.
- 3:15Speaker 4: So I think that's I don't think it's the same
- 3:18Speaker 4: because again, like when the newspapers started all closing and
- 3:22Speaker 4: everybody decided that multimedia was the way to go, that
- 3:28Speaker 4: the line between TV and print was no longer no longer.
- 3:31Speaker 3: You know, the cool irony in this, Jeff, I don't
- 3:33Speaker 3: think there's anybody more loyal to reading newspapers than me.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I subscribe to three of them. I read the actual paper.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I love writing, I love reading it. It's the pompous
- 3:45Speaker 3: nature of some who do offer that prose that bother
- 3:48Speaker 3: me talking down to that bothers me. Don't tell me
- 3:50Speaker 3: you're better than me.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I had, I guess I thank my parents, so you
- 3:57Speaker 4: know I come from uh talking down to You know,
- 4:04Speaker 4: my mom didn't graduate high school. She had a lot
- 4:06Speaker 4: of jobs people wouldn't want to work. My dad worked
- 4:10Speaker 4: a job for forty years. Most people wouldn't last ten minutes,
- 4:14Speaker 4: and they got talked down to.
- 4:17Speaker 2: A lot by people, you know along the way.
- 4:20Speaker 4: They didn't like it much, so they sort of taught
- 4:22Speaker 4: us not to do it.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Jeff Lake Walld All conversations with leg you brought to
- 4:25Speaker 1: you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local
- 4:28Speaker 1: sixty eight, start with the job and with a career.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Tell me about this draft class. You are the draft expert.
- 4:34Speaker 1: What do you think the Broncos acquired?
- 4:36Speaker 2: How they do? You know they got good value.
- 4:39Speaker 4: I know people aren't like gassed up because they didn't
- 4:41Speaker 4: take like five receivers, but you know the you know,
- 4:46Speaker 4: I had the tight end they got in the fifth
- 4:48Speaker 4: round in the top one hundred. Jonah Coleman, the running back,
- 4:54Speaker 4: I head very close to the top one hundred, so
- 4:59Speaker 4: you know, I think they and the linebacker. You know,
- 5:02Speaker 4: mister irrelevant is going to be pretty relevant, I think
- 5:05Speaker 4: in his career if it progresses, like I think I
- 5:09Speaker 4: had a fifth round grade on him and could have
- 5:14Speaker 4: been easily, and I know teams that had a Day
- 5:17Speaker 4: two grade on him, so drop. It's just one of
- 5:20Speaker 4: those weird things, Vick. You know, if the teams that
- 5:23Speaker 4: have the high grades on you, if the board falls
- 5:26Speaker 4: a certain way, they don't get a swing at you,
- 5:29Speaker 4: so you just sort of fall through the because.
- 5:32Speaker 2: In day three.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Now in the nil era, day three has suddenly become
- 5:37Speaker 4: everybody going for their needs and selecting players they would
- 5:43Speaker 4: have signed as undrafted before because it gives you more control,
- 5:49Speaker 4: gives you four years of contractual control over a player,
- 5:54Speaker 4: whereas you've signed them as an undrafted you might only
- 5:57Speaker 4: get one year of contractual, you know. So Day three
- 6:02Speaker 4: has become a lot of selecting for me. So guys
- 6:05Speaker 4: like him are gonna fall now a little more.
- 6:09Speaker 2: But I think they did okay.
- 6:11Speaker 4: And the defensive tackle, I know everybody wanted, like, you know,
- 6:16Speaker 4: some kind of offensive guy there, but he has a
- 6:20Speaker 4: I think he will challenge for some of the snaps
- 6:23Speaker 4: that were vacated by John franklinmin I hope he makes.
- 6:26Speaker 5: It just because I like his I like the name.
- 6:29Speaker 5: I'm Red Murdoch. I played for the Buffalo Bulls. I mean,
- 6:33Speaker 5: I just to me that that's real. You know, little things, Jeff,
- 6:37Speaker 5: little things get me excited. Yeah, and if he can
- 6:41Speaker 5: play hell yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Well, I you know, nobody's ever seen seventeen forced fumbles
- 6:48Speaker 4: in a career because nobody else has ever done it.
- 6:50Speaker 4: So uh, I watched like four full games of his work,
- 6:56Speaker 4: and it was it seemed like every time I looked up,
- 7:00Speaker 4: they were scooping up the ball after he had finished,
- 7:03Speaker 4: just crater in some guy.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So I think he's got a real shot to.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Push for you know, prime special teams and even even
- 7:13Speaker 4: on defense early.
- 7:16Speaker 3: How many of these picks, if any, is expected to
- 7:19Speaker 3: start anybody?
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean I've always said that it's snapped.
- 7:24Speaker 4: You got to look where the snaps are available to start,
- 7:27Speaker 4: and I think, you know, Dre Greenlaws snaps are available,
- 7:32Speaker 4: like for Jonah Ellis or you know, for the new guy.
- 7:37Speaker 4: You know, I think John Franklin Myers's snaps are available.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Is it gonna be a wazarique or is it gonna
- 7:44Speaker 4: be the the third round draft pick, you know. I
- 7:48Speaker 4: think that's where the rookies can can find some of
- 7:52Speaker 4: those snaps. And I think Jolie the tight end can
- 7:56Speaker 4: push for getting on the field because he's ready as
- 7:59Speaker 4: a receiver.
- 8:00Speaker 2: It's just a matter of if.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Sean Payton's gonna say, well, he's got to be proficient
- 8:07Speaker 4: at multiple things before I put him out there, or
- 8:11Speaker 4: if they just will be willing to let him do
- 8:15Speaker 4: some work as a receiver as he learns the rest
- 8:18Speaker 4: along the way.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You know, one of the names you didn't come up with,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and it feels to me like this guy is gonna
- 8:23Speaker 1: play is Jonah Coleman. And it's because he's one of
- 8:26Speaker 1: those guys. If there's one thing we know about Sean
- 8:29Speaker 1: Payton and his running backs, they need to earn the
- 8:32Speaker 1: trust of pass protection with him, and Jonah Coleman seems
- 8:34Speaker 1: to be pretty proficient at that.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Not to be a beat writer, but I did say
- 8:39Speaker 4: Jonah Coleman duly in the in the answer.
- 8:42Speaker 2: No, he that was ago.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I think what I like about Joonah Coleman, And it
- 8:49Speaker 4: was a stat I was frankly pretty stunned at because
- 8:52Speaker 4: it was a high number, but of his rushing yards
- 8:55Speaker 4: last season, seventy one point two percent after contact, which
- 9:01Speaker 4: is a phenomenal number. So that guy doesn't go down
- 9:08Speaker 4: after the first hit very often. And I think they
- 9:11Speaker 4: were looking for the if something happens to Dobbins, and
- 9:17Speaker 4: you know JK doesn't like discussing it, but he played
- 9:21Speaker 4: the most games of his career as a rookie and
- 9:24Speaker 4: that's still the case. So I think the Broncos were
- 9:28Speaker 4: trying to be in a position where if something happens
- 9:32Speaker 4: to Dobbins, they don't have the same thing happened to
- 9:35Speaker 4: their offense has happened last year, and Joonah Coleman was
- 9:39Speaker 4: the closest thing that JK Dobbins on this draft board,
- 9:43Speaker 4: and I think that's why he can play. He was
- 9:45Speaker 4: also one of my three best running backs in pass protection,
- 9:51Speaker 4: which every single NFL running back coach I know will say,
- 9:58Speaker 4: you're not playing on third down until I think you
- 10:00Speaker 4: can pass protect. And the running back coaches are the
- 10:04Speaker 4: guys who are the gatekeepers for the playing time, and
- 10:08Speaker 4: I think that get those two things give him a
- 10:11Speaker 4: great chance to get a lot of snaps too, and
- 10:13Speaker 4: I think those would be the four rookies I think
- 10:16Speaker 4: can push right away for some kind of action on
- 10:20Speaker 4: a fourteen win team. There's just not much room for
- 10:24Speaker 4: new people coming in to find a place.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Anyway.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I'm offended by the way you talk down to me.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I tried very hard to do. It's hard for me
- 10:36Speaker 2: at my height to talk down at anybody.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Hey, Jeff, we'll get to the Bonix Ankle thing here momentarily,
- 10:42Speaker 5: but I'd like to talk about the elephant in the room.
- 10:44Speaker 5: The problem is you can't fit the elephant in the
- 10:46Speaker 5: tight end room because there are now seven tight ends
- 10:49Speaker 5: in that room. It is the idea, hey man, let's
- 10:54Speaker 5: just bring them all in. Let God sort it out.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Is that that must be the idea because they took
- 10:59Speaker 5: two in the draft and they already had five. I mean,
- 11:02Speaker 5: what what are we doing?
- 11:03Speaker 4: And they also took one last year. They spent all
- 11:05Speaker 4: year on the practice squad, and you got you got.
- 11:08Speaker 5: A project already, you have a project already simmering there.
- 11:11Speaker 4: And you know they re signed Trautman, a pretty big
- 11:14Speaker 4: money Ingram's got a year left on it. I mean,
- 11:17Speaker 4: they they have made it a crowd and they're all
- 11:20Speaker 4: not gonna make it.
- 11:21Speaker 2: But I think.
- 11:22Speaker 4: They they're not going to admit it publicly, but they're
- 11:27Speaker 4: admitting it in their own way that they they need
- 11:30Speaker 4: to find some impact.
- 11:32Speaker 2: They got to find a combination, uh.
- 11:35Speaker 4: That gives you some impact because frankly, you know, the
- 11:38Speaker 4: rest of the league is has joined the Mike Shanahan flot.
- 11:43Speaker 4: When I tell people all the time, you want to
- 11:46Speaker 4: you want to crush nickel defenses. You want to crush
- 11:50Speaker 4: three four defenses with edge pressure that have good edge
- 11:54Speaker 4: pressure on you. You got to have a tight end attacking,
- 11:58Speaker 4: and you got to have a tight end attacking in
- 12:00Speaker 4: the middle of the field and in the red zone
- 12:03Speaker 4: because that's where you win the matchups all the time.
- 12:06Speaker 2: In today's NFL.
- 12:08Speaker 4: You know, inside linebackers are two thirty now, they're not
- 12:11Speaker 4: to forty five, they're not too fifty. And it's why
- 12:15Speaker 4: you see the Rams one of the best offenses in
- 12:18Speaker 4: the league, you know, going three tight ends a lot
- 12:21Speaker 4: of the time. It's why you see the Lions attack
- 12:24Speaker 4: in the passing game to backs and tight ends. People
- 12:29Speaker 4: have figured it out. The Broncos are late to the party.
- 12:33Speaker 4: They have not been able to do this for a while,
- 12:36Speaker 4: and they know they have.
- 12:38Speaker 3: To, all right, in your fest finest sanctimonious tone, Jeff, likewe,
- 12:44Speaker 3: how should we feel about this cleanup procedure for bnicks
- 12:48Speaker 3: the ankle moving forward? Personally, I'm not worried about the procedure.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I'm worried about how it's going to affect his speed
- 12:54Speaker 3: and mobility going forward.
- 12:56Speaker 2: How about you? All right?
- 12:58Speaker 4: You know, VI, I'm always My stance on injury recovery
- 13:03Speaker 4: is when I see it with my eyes on, you know,
- 13:07Speaker 4: when the player's full speed, then I'll say it's not
- 13:10Speaker 4: a problem, it's not a potential issue.
- 13:13Speaker 2: So it's a potential issue.
- 13:15Speaker 4: But I think in the big picture, this is multiple
- 13:21Speaker 4: surgeries on his ankles since high school. Uh, you know,
- 13:25Speaker 4: I've since talked to two team two team medical people
- 13:30Speaker 4: from other teams.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Is that by the way, or are we just no?
- 13:34Speaker 2: It's a number.
- 13:35Speaker 4: The number varies depending on who you talk to, but
- 13:39Speaker 4: it's multiple. He's had at least three since he's been
- 13:42Speaker 4: with the Broncos.
- 13:43Speaker 2: So three he's had. Well, he had a he had
- 13:47Speaker 2: a clean up.
- 13:48Speaker 4: After his rookie year on one of his ankles, you know,
- 13:52Speaker 4: and now he's had two on the right ankle since
- 13:56Speaker 4: he fractured it. So that's just since he's been with
- 13:58Speaker 4: the Broncos two years, three ankle surgeries, so I think
- 14:04Speaker 4: moving forward, that's kind of the just the information you have.
- 14:09Speaker 4: You know, it obviously has not affected his playing time.
- 14:14Speaker 4: He has not missed a regular season game, so it's
- 14:18Speaker 4: not an issue there. But I think moving forward, you know,
- 14:22Speaker 4: is this something where you know he's played two NFL
- 14:25Speaker 4: seasons and had ankle surgeries after both, is you know,
- 14:31Speaker 4: if you're a player, you don't want it to be
- 14:32Speaker 4: an annual thing. But I think moving forward it will
- 14:37Speaker 4: just bear watching and it will be something I think
- 14:41Speaker 4: the Broncos are not going to want to talk about.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Sean Payton's not going to want to talk about it,
- 14:47Speaker 4: if bo Nix is not going to want to talk
- 14:48Speaker 4: about it, So I think it's going to be one of.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Those hot button issues until it's not.
- 14:55Speaker 4: And the only way it's not is if he does
- 14:58Speaker 4: not have anymore for a while.
- 15:02Speaker 2: But I think, you know, the.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Broncos speak publicly about it as if it would be
- 15:08Speaker 4: no problem, and I keep being told he's ready to
- 15:11Speaker 4: go for training camp, So you know, until I see that,
- 15:15Speaker 4: I'll take them at their word, but we will. We
- 15:19Speaker 4: may not really know what the Broncos think of all
- 15:23Speaker 4: this until it's time to engage the fifth year option,
- 15:27Speaker 4: until it's time to negotiate a long term contract with him.
- 15:32Speaker 3: One follow up to that, because his rehab is taking
- 15:35Speaker 3: longer than we may have expected. Is that a reason
- 15:37Speaker 3: why Sean Payton has pushed the mini camps later?
- 15:41Speaker 2: No, it was not. He genuinely did this.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Because, unlike most coaches, the offseason program in the collective
- 15:52Speaker 4: Bargaining Agreement is divided into three phases they call it,
- 15:57Speaker 4: and each phase has its own level of activity that's allowed.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Phase three is the.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Eleven on eleven you know, OTAs and mini camp. Phase
- 16:09Speaker 4: one is conditioning only, conditioning and weightlifting. Sean Payton, unlike
- 16:16Speaker 4: most coaches, keeps the guys in Phase one for a month. Uh,
- 16:21Speaker 4: He's always done it this way. He believes in it.
- 16:23Speaker 4: He thinks it cuts down on injuries. They don't do
- 16:26Speaker 4: Phase two here. They go right from Phase one to
- 16:30Speaker 4: Phase three. So he because they you know, went to
- 16:36Speaker 4: the AFC Championship game, he didn't want them to feel
- 16:40Speaker 4: like there was like no offseason, so he started Phase
- 16:45Speaker 4: one essentially two weeks later. They start Monday in Phase
- 16:49Speaker 4: one and they'll be in Monday. They'll be in Phase
- 16:52Speaker 4: one for a month, and then they'll do the OTAs
- 16:56Speaker 4: the first two weeks of June, and then Mini camp
- 16:58Speaker 4: the third week of June, and they'll they'll roughly finish
- 17:02Speaker 4: up only a few days after they finished up last year.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwell at ESPN dot com joins us every Thursday.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Always appreciate it, Leggy.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Thank you. I will try not to speak down to
- 17:14Speaker 2: you ever again. I'm sorry you.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Still offend you. You know how much I love you.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Thanks, Thanks Jeff, Thank Jeff. Jeff Lagweld ESPN dot com.
- 17:25Speaker 1: All guests join us on the Ramos Law Hotline.
- 17:28Speaker 5: That was weird. It's really weird.
- 17:31Speaker 1: What was Why were you whispering to him?
- 17:34Speaker 5: I love Jeff, Well, you're whispering sweet nothings.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Well, what do you want me to do? Show my feet?
- 17:41Speaker 5: Oh well, actually yeah, nope,
