- 0:56I hope to share some stats about our program with you. I did this
- 1:00kind of at the beginning of the podcast several years ago, and we've grown
- 1:03quite a bit since then, So we'll talk a little bit about the who's
- 1:07and how many's of who's listening. I won't overwhelm anybody. I'll keep it
- 1:11kind of short, maybe space it out over a few days. But the
- 1:17show's definitely grown quite a bit, and I appreciate everybody who's been part of
- 1:19that. All Right, Well, now it's time for today's episode of the
- 1:23Carter Brown Mysteries. Today's episode is Call for a Columnist, Part three,
- 1:30and coming up later in the program, we will wrap up the Alvin Summers
- 1:37Matter. Here now is Carter Brown, Cutter down Mystery Adventures in Excitement and
- 1:57Suspense based on the best selling novels by the storytelling Sensation Hot Up. Proud.
- 2:15People have open told me how much they envied me. Well, I
- 2:17can't blame them. Who wouldn't envy a guy right to call him like Dynamite
- 2:22with Johnny Lane, which is a four million readership, But right now even
- 2:25I wouldn't envy me. By the time Senator Rowland's ex girlfriend Fellman or two
- 2:30hudlums have finished with me, I was really in trouble. I knew what
- 2:35was going to happen when the two additions of my column that telmot forced me
- 2:38to ride hit the streets. When Senator Rowland, in the full pride of
- 2:42his position at the head of the Vice probe Committee, read those allegations against
- 2:45him and chief of Police so Burne, I could guess who was going to
- 2:47be on the burning end me and who add injury to libel. Tony Spencer,
- 2:53my bodyguard, the girl with a captivating curves and the concrete Constitution,
- 2:59at first rescued me and then slugged me over the skull. Y you're awake,
- 3:06Yeah, how are you feeling? Oh fine, just fine? How
- 3:09long did I sleep? Hey, you hit me. I'm sorry, Johnny,
- 3:15honest I am. But it was the only way to get you here.
- 3:17Where where am I? This is a hide out and mister Arts picked
- 3:21out for you. You're safe here, safe nothing. I got no time
- 3:23to be safe. I remember. Now, I got to get to the
- 3:25paper. I gotta stop from printing those columns. I'm a trade. It's
- 3:29too late for that, Johnny. What do you mean the paper won't go
- 3:31to bed for a couple of hours. Ye've already been to bed, Johnny,
- 3:35and so of you for three days, three days. Don't scream like
- 3:39that, Johnny, you'll burst me your drug just burst. I can't have
- 3:44been out for three days just from a tap on my head, of course
- 3:46not. I dosed you with a sleeping draft every time you woke up.
- 3:52And those columns, they've been published. Yes, Johnny, I don't know
- 3:55what you're so worried about. I think you're wonderful. They have the courage
- 4:00to say what you did about the senator and the chief of police. They
- 4:03gave it a special treatment both days, ran it right on the front page
- 4:08with a heavy black border around it. My obituary. Notice, Hey,
- 4:12butN that only covers two days. How about the day's issue? What did
- 4:15they run today as statements saying you hadn't had time to write your usual column,
- 4:19but that they confidently awaited the proof you're shot to bring in. Oh
- 4:23they were awfully nice, Johnny. They said that in spite of intimidation,
- 4:28rits and threats, they stood solidly behind you. Intimidation, rits and threats.
- 4:32Holy column, A dead duck. Look, I've got to get back
- 4:35to town before they served me up to the cops with cranberry sauce. Will
- 4:40there's no reason why you can't go now, mister Arts and I were unconcerned
- 4:43with laying you low for a couple of days. You did that all right.
- 4:46No guy could have been laid lower. I've got the car. I'll
- 4:48drive you back. No thanks, I'll drive myself back. As of now,
- 4:53your services are no longer required, Johnny, you'll need a bodyguard more
- 4:58than ever now. The kind of budd god that knocks me out call for
- 5:00three days. I can get out of a bottle and it won't cost me
- 5:03thirty five a day and expenses. Goodbye, miss Spencer, Monsieur Lane.
- 5:21I am so happy to see you. We have missed you. You're gonna
- 5:25miss me a lot more in the future, as you own for a number
- 5:27of years. I should imagine you are going away, Miss de Lane sing
- 5:30sing Alcatraz State hasn't made up its mind yet, but it will, Joe,
- 5:35it will. You would like a bottle of your usually too well pleasure,
- 5:41I will fetch it myself. Juny Oh, it's good to see you.
- 5:50Johnny. It's great to see you, Simone. A little luscious,
- 5:54feminine company is just what I need right now. I was so worried about
- 5:58your journey. Terrible man. Did they hurt you? They kills me?
- 6:03Ut you You are joking now, you know when you did not come for
- 6:11four nights, I was worried. I wondered perhaps if I had inadvertantly insulted
- 6:15you Ju. As long as you supply drinks like this, you can't and
- 6:18something. I am proud yourself, you with your Lane. The man who
- 6:23has the carriage to print what you have printed is a man to be admiring.
- 6:27But don't drag that up. There's a two million dollar damage suit against
- 6:30me in the paper, and my editor is going quietly crazy. What is
- 6:34the latest development? Perhaps you would give us the inside story. This You
- 6:40tell us how you're fiet against virus is progressive viruses want a technical knockout.
- 6:46It's only a matter of the referee counting me out. You must be somewhere
- 6:48around eight already. Truly, it is as bad as that, worse,
- 6:56much worse? Am I leaving all for a little while? Oh god not?
- 7:01I just remember someone only the duck, and I have to go out
- 7:04and shoot one who, Julie, you are in those punity. I expect
- 7:11to be in very high spirits by the time I finished this bottle. Johnny,
- 7:15if you feel though, why not go to my place. You can
- 7:18tell me all about it and it might help you. Yeah, I guess
- 7:24it. Man, Johnny, he comes trouble. I think when you're come
- 7:29to my apartment, I'll be waiting. I looked up to see what someone
- 7:35meant by trouble. I realized she was right ascending on me. Was Captain
- 7:40Stanger, chief of police, so Burns right hand man. Well, well,
- 7:44well, if it wasn't my favorite columnist, so that I'm captain,
- 7:46kill yourself drinking? Hey, when did you get back in the circulation tonight?
- 7:50I was kidnapped? Oh no, And I suppose you were forced to
- 7:55write those columns. You better think up something better than that, Johnny,
- 8:00boy or burns matter than a hornet. He's issuing a call for you as
- 8:03a material witness, and by the time the boys are through with you,
- 8:07you'll be happy to admit up with you who assassinated Lincoln? Okay, so
- 8:11you come to take me in till I get the handcuffs on me? Now?
- 8:15Oh, got me wrong, Johnny. I'm not taking you any place.
- 8:18Officially, I'm not doing and officially I don't even know that you're wanted.
- 8:24I yeah, just dropped in for a friendly chat. I don't care
- 8:26it. Why should you bother to tip me up? I'll tell you,
- 8:31Johnny, I think you're in a spot. Give me an original thought that
- 8:35somebody must have tipped you off to print that stuff, somebody who knew what
- 8:39they were talking about. After only, we're right about Albert Berraro's killing,
- 8:46wasn't they You mean they could be right about Senator rolland and place chief or
- 8:50burn or? Did I say that? I just figure that if i'm would
- 8:54you, Johnny, I'd find out and find out fast before you haven't got
- 8:58a chance of finding out, Before you've got bruises where your body used to
- 9:01be. I think it over, Johnny, and you don't have much time
- 9:09square blow. I watched him go, wondering whether he was crazy or me.
- 9:18Then I pulled myself together and left the club destination Simon's apartment. When
- 9:24a door opened, I thought she changed. Suddenly she was wearing a suit
- 9:28and it developed a blue shadow and her chin, and I realized it was
- 9:31her Daggio partner, Simon. I've come in, mister Lynne. I've been
- 9:35expecting you. Simon was caught up with some business, so I have taken
- 9:39her place. You won't mind if I say that it's not quite the same.
- 9:43Still, perhaps I can per squat what's up with it? You know?
- 9:46Endy, you, mister Lynne, the columnist of your non must fascinating
- 9:50life. It's all right when they can keep on living. It's a dying.
- 9:54That's a tough part, don't I don't understand. I died tonight professionally.
- 10:00Oh, you know surprisingly enough to lend. I think I can help
- 10:03you with your problem. You have some knowledge which should interest you, Okay,
- 10:09almost not. You know, yours is a wonderful country, mister land.
- 10:13Everything here is organized on the grand scale, even crime, the rackets.
- 10:18And there's a new type of recketeer today, the recortier with education,
- 10:22good social background, good standing in the community, perhaps company director, or
- 10:26even a politician. Is that not so? So let us take a hypothetical
- 10:33case. It's a politician who is also a recketeer. Let us imagine him
- 10:39controlling the vice and the profits of vice in the city. For a time,
- 10:43all goes well, but sooner or later, what you call the heat
- 10:48is on. People get tired of the records flourishing under their noses and the
- 10:52noses of the police. They protest, They use papers, take up the
- 10:56protest. Obviously, something must be done. And what what would you do
- 11:01in a like situation? Person, I may have been taken for a ride
- 11:05the last few days, but I'm not that I thought of that. One.
- 11:09You have yourself elected head of an investigating committee, inquiring a device in
- 11:13the city so that you can cover yourself and at the same time crush any
- 11:18opposition that might need crushing. Exactly so, I congratulate you, Missler.
- 11:24But this opposition you'll speak of is of course part of the politician's own crime
- 11:30organization. I didn't know that the way should you. It is that part
- 11:35of the organization that is being squeezed too much, bled just a little too
- 11:39much by the politician. They are not organized, and they are alarmed by
- 11:43the politician's coming activities with the Investigation Committee, but they lack the means to
- 11:50positive action. And then the politician, that's something varies. He throws over
- 11:56his girlfriend Falmer, whom he had confided him too long, too much,
- 12:00precisely, and Senner has some knowledge of events still happen in particulation, knows
- 12:05that one member of the opposition is still working for our politician. Well,
- 12:11that's just call him Rowland her and getting tired of this hypothetical case very well.
- 12:16So Selima knows that Ferrado, who is supposedly one of the opposition,
- 12:22is still working for the senator. He is to give evidence at the first
- 12:26hearing of the investigation Committee. He will reveal the activities of all the people
- 12:31in the Senator's organization whom the Senator wishes to get rid off. So Rowland
- 12:37Her Feraro kill. On the contrary, the opposition had him killed. Just
- 12:43where do you for under the picture, sermon, I am a member of
- 12:48the opposition. It was handed cleverly. I think Ferrado's deaths of the double
- 12:54purpose. It prevented him giving information, and it served as a warning for
- 12:58the Senator. And then and then we use our master's stroke. We needed
- 13:03widespread publicity for our scheme to work, and what could be better than a
- 13:07columnist with our readership of four millions? You, mister Lynn, don't you
- 13:13feel flattened? And I feel slightly sick, So I was taken for a
- 13:16ride by the way. First two are given several items to published. Then
- 13:20all that was needed was to move you out of the way, persuade you
- 13:24to write what we wanted you to write, and make sure it's what's published.
- 13:28At first, it seemed as though our plans came unstucked when your friends
- 13:31rescued you. But fortunately they hit you away as well as we could have
- 13:37done ourselves. What happens now It is a sad scenes to learn, but
- 13:43you will appreciate that the situation cannot remain static. At the moment the police
- 13:48send Senator on and I allied against you, your own newspaper will discredit you,
- 13:54so the public will begin to doubt your allegations. But one thing would
- 14:00convince them that you were telling the truth what's up? If you were to
- 14:05be murdered, then people would be convinced that you had been right, and
- 14:11that you had been murdered to prevent your presenting the poof of your allegations.
- 14:16That prospect, as it is to learn. Once you are dead, you
- 14:18will be a national hero, a matter think of the honor and glory.
- 14:22I'm thinking about what comes before that. I don't let you want you it
- 14:26will be a weekend. Don't struggle, mister, learn accept the inevitable.
- 14:31We experience the greatest adventure that life can offer. Death, I asked the
- 14:37kidder, and you as a receiver, welcome back. While the Australians in
- 15:05the nineteen fifties could be more cynical about our government than we were, and
- 15:11urban governments in general, I will say that that guy does make from an
- 15:18egotistical perspective, the killing of Johnny Lane seemed almost appealing to him. But
- 15:24he's kind of hooked on that whole idea of living. And what question is
- 15:28will we be allowed to You'll have to join us next week we'll wrap out
- 15:33call for a columnist. Now it's time for today's episode of Yours Truly,
- 15:39Johnny Dowler. This one is the Alvin Summers Matter, Part five, which
- 15:46was set up with a fabulous cliffhanger. Let's see how it all turns out.
- 15:52From Hollywood. It's time now for Bob Bailey as Johnny Dowler. I
- 15:56told you that's my name. What do you want an alfa David. I've
- 15:58got to be sure. Look you've got me out here in the middle of
- 16:02the jungle with a gun in my bone. Tund I can't even see you.
- 16:04Do you think I'd be kidding you at a time like this? Any
- 16:07move, any move at all, and it'll be your last tonight and every
- 16:18weekday night. Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action
- 16:22Packed Expense account America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator, Yours truly, Johnny Dollar,
- 16:37Santo Tomas, Mexico. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the
- 16:42home office Northeastern Fidelity and Bonding, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an
- 16:47account of additional expenses during my investigation of the Alvin Summer's embezzlement of seventy five
- 16:51thousand dollars. It'd am twelve two cents just what I figured my life was
- 16:56worth at the moment. Gloria Harris taking me down the beach and into the
- 17:00jungle to show me the hut where Alvin Summers have been hiding out. There
- 17:03was no sign of him, but I heard a noise outside in the underbrush
- 17:07and went out to investigate. I didn't see a thing, but I felt
- 17:11something, a gun barrel pressing against the back of my neck. I want
- 17:14to talk to your Dollar. You've got a point way of arranging a conversation.
- 17:18Believe me, I could do better if you take away that gun.
- 17:21Don't answer, I was answering. Wait, well, be in your hotel
- 17:26room in exactly one hour, Lork. What's this all about. You're looking
- 17:30for Alvin Summers, aren't you, am I I've got some information about him
- 17:34for you. Let's happened now. Now I've got to talk to you alone.
- 17:38Be in your hotel room in town in an hour. Understand, Look
- 17:41you as I say, and be sure you're alone alone. Okay, Now,
- 17:48just keep looking straight ahead, don't turn around, and don't tell anyone
- 17:52about this anyone. Understand you make it pretty clear. I'll be watching your
- 17:56dollar. You won't see me, but I'll see you. I can believe
- 18:00mistress. Johnny. Please, Johnny, Well here you are. Yeah,
- 18:08why didn't you answer me? I came out here looking for a guy.
- 18:11Remember, how am I going to find him? If I started shouting at
- 18:14you? I got worried when you didn't come back to the hut. Yeah
- 18:17that noise you heard outside? Did you see anything? No? I didn't
- 18:21see a thing, Johnny. Didn't you find anything to give you a lead
- 18:23on where Summers might be? I don't know, but you said if I
- 18:27helped you find him, you'd see what you could do about getting me a
- 18:30passport back to the States. Yeah. Sure, come on, let's get
- 18:34out of here. Suits me fine. This place gives me the creeps,
- 18:37all these trees, divines, broad daylight, but you can't see a thing.
- 18:42I know. My imaginations still working over time. I got that feeling.
- 18:47We're being watched again. Funny, isn't it? Yeah, real funny.
- 18:53We kept on toward the beach. Gloria was fidgeting because she thought somebody
- 18:57was watching us. I was figging because I knew somebody was, and I
- 19:02had a strong hunch he was the man whose long distance phone call to the
- 19:04States brought me down to Mexico in the first place. We got back to
- 19:08the beach, I took Gloria up to her hotel and went down to mine
- 19:11in town. As I crossed the lobby toward the stairway to the second floor,
- 19:15I'll popped to from in your face. Hello friend, Oh Carson,
- 19:19Lieutenant Gomez let you out of jail. Oh. Now, let's get one
- 19:22thing straight, friend, I never was actually in jail, and you're lucky.
- 19:26I've seen the jail. Huh. Oh. Well, I just had
- 19:30to pay a fine, and that judge they got in this burg read me
- 19:33the Riot Act. But then they let me go. Well good. So
- 19:37now it's back to selling zippers huh. Sure is. And I'm behind schedule
- 19:40too, checking out right now. As a matter of fact, a lot
- 19:42of territory to cover, Like I always say, half half the Earl's waiting
- 19:47to get zipped up. Yeah, you told me, I did say tour.
- 19:52I'd like you to do me a favor. Oh that little trouble I
- 19:56got in the last night up at the platt Omar Hotel. Sure appreciate it
- 20:00if you'd keep quiet about it when you get back the States. You mean
- 20:03you don't want anybody to know you got plastered, grabbed a sarapi and did
- 20:07defendang look a guitar over the musician's head. Now, can't we just forget
- 20:12up? Leave me? I had until you reminded me, Carson, I'm
- 20:17reasonably sure we don't know the same people that won't be seeing each other again.
- 20:21I'd say the secret of your lurid pass was pretty safe. Well,
- 20:23I sure hope so, friend, But about not seeing each other in the
- 20:26States, I was planning on looking you up, kitty, Yes, sir,
- 20:30I got a deal for you. Sorry, but I have all the
- 20:32shippers I can use at the moment. No, that's not what I mean.
- 20:34Friend. I've been trying to get you into a cribbage game. Remember,
- 20:38how can I forget it? Well, instead, I'm going to look
- 20:41you up in the States and let you teach me to play Jim Rummy.
- 20:44How could I be so lucky? Oh? Sorry, I think that's my
- 20:47fault. So along, Carson, I'll sure look you up back and I
- 20:49get old USA. Friend. Hello, Hello, Hello, m keep your
- 21:07hands on the table. What oh my shadow again? Anybody call you?
- 21:11Not that I know of your early I know and I searched your room that's
- 21:15become an old Santa Tomas custom to make sure you really were Johnny Dawes.
- 21:18And now you know what about it, you can turn around. I don't
- 21:22know. Maybe you'll tell me what wait a minute, A decent shave and
- 21:27you'd match that photo I have in my suitcase. Alvin Summers. Yeah,
- 21:33I'm Alvin Summers. I don't get it. I had you figured for the
- 21:37man who made that long distance call to the States that tipped me off to
- 21:40come down here. You're right about that too. You put the finger on
- 21:44yourself if you want to call it that. Oh what happened? Your deal
- 21:48go sour on you? Maybe? Yeah? Okay, sit, I don't
- 21:52take it easy. Tell me about it. I'll turn on the overhead fan.
- 21:56Pretty stuff. You can hear dollar that phone call you got just kN
- 22:06hung up. Clerk downstairs must have rung the wrong room or somebody was checking
- 22:10to see if you were here. Could be okay, I suppose you start
- 22:15from the top. What was that? Relaxed? Just one of the charming
- 22:18features of this room. Turn on that big overhead fan. It slams the
- 22:22balcony door. Well turn it off. Well you I'm kind of edgy.
- 22:26Yeah, sure. You ask me if my deal had gone sour. It
- 22:33went very sour. Oh, I had it all figured out. I was
- 22:37planning it for a year. I was going to embezzle a seventy five thousand,
- 22:41really live, live big. Instead of that, I spend all my
- 22:45time hiding. Mexico City, Guenelac at, Tompico, you name it.
- 22:48I was there, always undercover, always hiding. Could you ever spend much
- 22:53time hiding? Dollar? Not? Not much. Oh, it's a great
- 22:56life. Great. Every time somebody who looks at you on the street,
- 23:00you're sure he's after you, tailing you. You wake up in the middle
- 23:03of the night, you see a shadow outside. It turns out to be
- 23:06just a bush, but you spend the rest of the night sweating. Finally,
- 23:10I just couldn't take it anymore the rest of my life that way,
- 23:14you know, Summers, A lot of guys figure that out before it's too
- 23:17late. Too bad you didn't. Yeah, So finally I owned the bonding
- 23:23company, a long distinance. I knew they'd send an investigator. They sent
- 23:27you. I thought, if I could talk to someone like you, see
- 23:33what could be done. There's only one thing can be done at this point,
- 23:37Summers come back with me to the States, bring back what's left of
- 23:41the money. Sixty. That'll help. But you know there can't be any
- 23:45deal. Yeah, I guess I always knew that. Here, take the
- 23:56gun. Thanks. Now, what about the money. It's in a safe
- 24:00deposit box in Mexico City. Here, here's the key. One thing I
- 24:07don't get those summers. Yeah, you wanted me to contact, but you
- 24:11were sure playing hard to find. I had to be careful. I got
- 24:17to look at it the first day you arrived. I wasn't sure you were
- 24:18the one, so I decided to come to your room that night. But
- 24:22then I saw somebody else coming here, so I gave up. I wasn't
- 24:25the bellboy, but hey do hey gotta be just before he got knifed.
- 24:30Oh no, I wasn't the one who killed him. Dollar. I'm no
- 24:34killer, just the fool who runs away with somebody else's money. Remember.
- 24:40Anyway, I didn't have another chance to get to it today. I had
- 24:42to keep undercover so they wouldn't find me. Wait a minute, Wait a
- 24:45minute, who's they The man who arranged for me to come down here and
- 24:51the girl who was going to make it all worthwhile? The girl Summers don't
- 24:56Gloria, Hello baby here, let me lave the gun right where it is,
- 25:00Johnny, that safe deposit key on the table. I guess you're calling
- 25:07them thanks, And it all adds up. You found out Summer's here was
- 25:15planning to turn himself in. He didn't want that money to slip through your
- 25:18fingers. But Summer's disappeared from his hideout. You couldn't find him, so
- 25:22you figured it. Let me find him for you. That's right, and
- 25:26it worked. And you're so right about that money. You think I'd give
- 25:30it up? Now keep out of it, Alvin. If you want to
- 25:33go back and be a boy Scott, that's your business. The money stays
- 25:37with me, Johnny. This doesn't have to be the end of it for
- 25:44us. Oh so now we get the pitch about making beautiful music. I'm
- 25:48not kidding, Johnny. Sixty thousands a lot of money. You know.
- 25:53You put on quite an act. Maybe I believed a little bit of it,
- 25:59but if I did, I quit the moment you walked through that door.
- 26:00Just now, Okay, Johnny, that's enough. I thought maybe you'd
- 26:04be smart, But if you won't, you leave me no choice, no
- 26:07GLORYA don't glorious the balcony. I'm on the balcony. Hold it, Carson,
- 26:14stay right where you are. Brando, shut up. She's dead.
- 26:18She crossed me. You and she were working against each other. She wanted
- 26:22me to lead it to Summers. You wanted to find him yourself, that's
- 26:26right, And Summers you took a lot of fine. That's why you killed
- 26:30Benito the bellboy, to shut his mouth. Then you went up to the
- 26:33big hotel and clowned around so you'd get arrested, and that way set up
- 26:36an alibi for the evening. I was pretty proud of that little idea dollar,
- 26:41and it's all worked out just the way I wanted it. You see,
- 26:44right from the start, Carson was holding all the trump's. They were
- 26:47made out of lead, and I knew he was going to start dealing them
- 26:48any second. Then I remember the overhead fan. The switch was right next
- 26:52to my elbow. The balcony door was opened, and Carson had his back
- 26:56to it. What are you doing? Just turning on the and I need
- 27:00some air? Can you blame me? Yeah, you're sweat and aren't a
- 27:03dollar. It's no matter. You're losing your nerve. Well, it really
- 27:07doesn't matter one worth. The door swammed Carlson World and I knocked the lamp
- 27:12on the table. By the time I hit the four, my gun was
- 27:15out. I picked up the lamp and at it again. Summers was crouched
- 27:25in a corner across the room. Sitting on the floor was Carson, staring
- 27:27stupidly down at the red bullet hole in his side. I picked his gun,
- 27:30a boar. Summers call the police station, Lieutenant Gomez. Yeah,
- 27:37all right, help me do Yeah, it hurts, but not as much
- 27:42as it hurt Benito. And Gloria, you finally got me into a game,
- 27:48didn't your friend? And you lost Expense account Item thirteen double the amount
- 27:56of Item one, four hundred and forty dollars transportation back to the States for
- 28:02Alman Summers and me. And you know I turn them over to the authorities
- 28:06as soon as we got back. That's the way he wanted it. Gloria,
- 28:11Well, once in a while I get to wondering if she really meant
- 28:15some of the things she told me. Not that it matters. Conclusion of
- 28:19report. Expense account total nine hundred and twenty three dollars yours, Tully,
- 28:25Johnny Dollar. Remember please There'll be a new exciting story on Johnny Dollar beginning

- 29:22of Yours Truly Johnny Duller. Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Well, that
- 30:26Carson guy just gives cribbage players a bad name. Now, I wonder if
- 30:30he actually was capable of playing cribbage. If Johnny had nawn, he might
- 30:34have been able to call him on the bluff. But overall, a very
- 30:38nicely done episode and one of those I cannot find any other script it was
- 30:45based on. Of course, when I first heard the title of The Valenhei
- 30:48Matter, I was immediately reminded of George Valentin. I've listened to that cereal
- 30:56there's no connection, but it's none the last a good program. And by
- 31:03the way, if anybody is aware of of an episode that of another radio
- 31:10program that this was adapted from, and I'm somehow missing them, let me
- 31:14know. All right, Well, listener comments and feedback now, and I
- 31:18have a message from Joel who emails in. I was interested to research Virginia
- 31:23Gregg and himI Delbai, the producer and transcriber of early episodes of Johnny Doller,
- 31:29The Lineup and many other programs. I was interested to learn that he
- 31:32was married to Virginia Gregg, who played so many key roles Brooksie among others,
- 31:37and was very active in television and film. She had a prolific career.
- 31:42Delvai was a descendant of the Creole family who was among the founders of
- 31:47Los Angeles. It's interesting I had never known that those two were married.
- 31:52Of course, Virginia Gregg. I've been completing my countdown of Radio's most Essential
- 31:57people, and she finished number five, highest for any character performer, and
- 32:06she really had a great poise. One story I read about her on the
- 32:10digital delifgp dot com was that when she was playing on the radio. She'd
- 32:17often do different parts. She knew her part so well she would actually sit
- 32:22and knit while she waited for it to be her turn to come on again.
- 32:28She was that professional, that good behind the microphone. And he goes
- 32:34on to write your podcast to become a regular part of my nighttime ritual.
- 32:37I prefer these programs to television and appreciate your hard work in diligence as well
- 32:42as your commentaries in your distinctive accent. Is it native to Boise here or
- 32:46from somewhere else and all? This is a great question, and I wish
- 32:52I could give you a really good answer. Truth is, I don't know.
- 32:57Both My parents were from the northwest over. My father served in the
- 33:00army, traveled around. I spent several years down south around North Carolina Way,
- 33:07and then growing up, I spent several years up in northwest Montana,
- 33:12place called the Yak And then we traveled to and fro up and down the
- 33:16northwest with my dad's sort of a tenorant preacher. Then headed down to the
- 33:22south for a summer. Yeah, a summer, I think I would have
- 33:25preferred spring, but and then up to Montana. A couple of smaller towns
- 33:34Eureka and then Kalispell and then moved out to Boise, so somewhere around there
- 33:40in that time, I apparently picked up this accent, and honestly, I
- 33:47don't know what it is. I guess I'm going on the assumption for now
- 33:52that it's an Adam graham accent, and if anyone out there knows the source,
- 34:00a blow me now. So it's a Grammy in accent. That's what
- 34:04we're calling it for now. All right, well, we will see you
- 34:07tomorrow for the lineup. Join us back here on Monday for another episode of
- 34:15Yours Truly Johnny Doller, and on Friday. Next Friday, we wrap up
- 34:20call for a columnist. In the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen
