- 1:36at the end of the show.
- 1:38So welcome everyone, once I said, to the
- 1:41ever-popular Inspirations for Your Life show.
- 1:47And I'm so grateful to have you guys
- 1:49here.
- 1:49It's really great to have everybody here and
- 1:51that you're wanting to enjoy the show with
- 1:53me.
- 1:54In case you guys did not know, I'm
- 1:56your host.
- 1:57I'm John C.
- 1:57Morley.
- 1:57I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 1:59I am an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:02podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at
- 2:06Montclair State University, passionate lifelong learner, and so
- 2:09grateful now to be a published author.
- 2:12So today I'm continuing our series, Momentum Changes
- 2:15Everything.
- 2:16With small wins, change everything.
- 2:20Okay?
- 2:21A lot of people think confidence has to
- 2:24come first.
- 2:25They think they need to feel confident before
- 2:28they act.
- 2:30But confidence often works in the opposite direction.
- 2:33You act, you create, and that's evidence.
- 2:38And that evidence begins changing what you believe
- 2:41about yourself.
- 2:42So let's get in the show.
- 2:44Are you ready?
- 2:44I know I am.
- 2:45It's going to be another great show.
- 2:46Number one, confidence grows when you collect.
- 2:53Confidence grows when you collect.
- 3:00Confidence isn't built by repeatedly telling yourself you're
- 3:03amazing.
- 3:04It grows when you have experiences that say,
- 3:07I did it.
- 3:08Every complete action gives you another reason to,
- 3:11then again, guys, trust yourself.
- 3:14And I think that's a real important one
- 3:16for us to understand, that we need to
- 3:18trust ourselves.
- 3:18Sometimes it's hard for us to do things
- 3:20in life.
- 3:21But when we trust ourselves, life becomes just
- 3:23a little bit easier.
- 3:25Right?
- 3:26A little bit easier.
- 3:26And I think that's a very important one
- 3:30for us to realize.
- 3:32Number two, small wins.
- 3:34Yeah, small wins give your brain proof of
- 3:36progress.
- 3:37Your brain needs something concrete.
- 3:39Well, small wins says, you're not standing still.
- 3:42You move something forward.
- 3:43And that proof can make the next steps
- 3:48easier for us.
- 3:49Now, I know sometimes it's hard because we're
- 3:52like, well, this isn't going the way I
- 3:53want it to go.
- 3:54I get it, right?
- 3:55I get that.
- 3:56And I think once you've gone through things,
- 3:58you've had some challenges, you're like, wait a
- 4:00minute.
- 4:00This isn't as hard as it actually seems,
- 4:03right?
- 4:03It's not as hard as it actually seems.
- 4:05That's probably the biggest thing that I can
- 4:07tell you.
- 4:08Number three, stop dismissing progress because it looks
- 4:12ordinary.
- 4:14Yeah, that's important, guys.
- 4:21Number three, stop diminishing progress because it looks
- 4:25ordinary.
- 4:26We often ignore progress because it isn't dramatic
- 4:29enough.
- 4:30But ordinary progress is still progress.
- 4:32The email sent, the workout completed, the phone
- 4:36call that you made, the progress you started
- 4:39for the project, the page that was written.
- 4:44And yeah, the email or the letter that
- 4:48you did all counts.
- 4:50But I think sometimes we're hard on ourselves.
- 4:54We've got this perfectionist streak.
- 4:56And I think that can be a problem
- 4:57for a lot of people, why that happens.
- 5:00Number four, guys, number four is a really,
- 5:03really good one.
- 5:03And that is completing something matters.
- 5:06There's power in finishing.
- 5:10Completion closes a loop.
- 5:12And reminds you that you can take something
- 5:15from intention to action.
- 5:18That matters more than we sometimes even realize.
- 5:21Number five, make your first daily win achievable.
- 5:26Don't begin every morning by demanding something enormous
- 5:29from yourself.
- 5:30Choose one meaningful win you can realistically achieve.
- 5:34Give yourself an opportunity to create momentum early.
- 5:38Don't do it later.
- 5:39Because if you do it later, you'll be
- 5:39like, you know what, I don't really believe
- 5:41in myself.
- 5:41I don't know that I really can do
- 5:42this.
- 5:43But you know what?
- 5:43You really can do the things.
- 5:45And I think that's something that a lot
- 5:46of people, they miss out on life.
- 5:48They don't realize that they can do things.
- 5:51And that can do is something that a
- 5:53lot of people say to me, hey, John,
- 5:54where's this coming from?
- 5:55Or how am I embracing this?
- 5:58I think that comes down to us saying
- 6:00there's a lot we can do in life.
- 6:02There's a very lot we can do in
- 6:04life.
- 6:05Okay?
- 6:05Number six, finish small tasks.
- 6:09Can unlock larger ones.
- 6:11I've often said that when we do something
- 6:13and it requires some effort, that's preparing us
- 6:16for an even bigger accomplishment.
- 6:19A reward.
- 6:20One completed task changes your state.
- 6:23Suddenly the next thing doesn't seem quite as
- 6:26intimidating.
- 6:27Small, right?
- 6:30Doesn't seem small at all.
- 6:33And that small action can become a doorway
- 6:37to much larger actions in the future.
- 6:39But I know what you're saying.
- 6:41I know you're saying, hey, John, you don't
- 6:43understand my life or what's going on.
- 6:45I get it.
- 6:45Number seven, progress creates emotional energy.
- 6:53Does that make sense to you?
- 6:55Hopefully it does.
- 6:58And hopefully that means something to why you're
- 7:01thinking about something a certain way.
- 7:03Right?
- 7:04I think that's a really key point.
- 7:06So, number seven, progress creates emotional energy.
- 7:10But how does it do that?
- 7:13How does it do that?
- 7:16I think that's a very important thing.
- 7:22Right?
- 7:23A very important thing.
- 7:29And these are things that I think a
- 7:30lot of us need to realize.
- 7:41I'm just asking.
- 7:45Right?
- 7:46Maybe you're saying, John, I don't get it.
- 7:48But I want to tell you that you
- 7:50can get it if you really believe.
- 7:52So, movement changes how you feel.
- 7:55When you see yourself progressing, you often gain
- 7:57energy instead of losing it.
- 7:59That emotional lift can help you carry it
- 8:03forward.
- 8:03It can help you be more proportionate in
- 8:06life.
- 8:11That's important, guys.
- 8:13Very important.
- 8:17And maybe it means something to you, but
- 8:19maybe it doesn't.
- 8:20Right?
- 8:22I think that's important.
- 8:24Right?
- 8:26It's very important to understand that.
- 8:31Maybe to you it doesn't mean that.
- 8:36But it really does.
- 8:37Okay?
- 8:41That's important.
- 8:43Right?
- 8:47That's a very important thing.
- 8:49So what I want to say about that
- 8:50is number eight.
- 8:52Track what you complete instead of only what
- 8:55remains.
- 8:55If you only stare at what remains, unfinished,
- 9:00you can convince yourself if you accomplish nothing.
- 9:05Okay?
- 9:06Look backward occasionally.
- 9:09Notice what you actually completed.
- 9:12Number nine.
- 9:14Celebrate movement without becoming, well, without becoming complacent.
- 9:20I think that's hard for a lot of
- 9:22people to understand what that means.
- 9:25Complacent is a word I think sometimes that
- 9:27we shove under the rug.
- 9:29But it's something I believe that a lot
- 9:30of us need to understand.
- 9:32Okay?
- 9:33Number nine.
- 9:35Celebrate movement without becoming complacent.
- 9:38And giving yourself credit doesn't mean you stop
- 9:41growing.
- 9:43Recognize the win.
- 9:44Appreciate it.
- 9:45And then use that energy to continue.
- 9:49Celebration and ambition can coexist together.
- 9:52Number ten.
- 9:54One successful action can challenge an old belief
- 9:57about yourself.
- 9:59Maybe you've told yourself, I never finish anything.
- 10:02Then you finish something.
- 10:03That one action becomes evidence against an old
- 10:07story you've been carrying.
- 10:09Okay?
- 10:09I think sometimes, you know, we get stuck
- 10:12in these dull dreams of saying, hey, what
- 10:14am I doing?
- 10:14Or why am I doing it this way?
- 10:16And it's not to scare you.
- 10:17But it's just to say, wait a minute.
- 10:19Are we doing the right thing?
- 10:21Am I on track with my life?
- 10:23I think these are the questions that we
- 10:24want to be asking ourselves.
- 10:26Number 11, guys, I think is a very,
- 10:28a very, very important one.
- 10:30And that is confidence is strengthened through experience.
- 10:36Confidence isn't merely an idea.
- 10:38It's something you develop through doing.
- 10:41Experience gives you memories of handling situations, solving
- 10:45problems, and moving forward.
- 10:48Right?
- 10:50Number 12.
- 10:51Build promises to yourself that you actually keep.
- 10:56You might have heard the word make promises
- 10:59to yourself, but I'm saying build.
- 11:00I think build is more important.
- 11:03Stop making enormous promises you repeatedly break.
- 11:06Start smaller.
- 11:06Make commitments that challenge you but are realistic
- 11:09enough for you to honor.
- 11:13Number 13.
- 11:14Every kept promise adds evidence.
- 11:17When you tell yourself you do something and
- 11:20then do it, you strengthen self-trust.
- 11:24Each kept promise becomes another piece of evidence
- 11:27about who you are becoming.
- 11:30Number 14.
- 11:32Create wins before demanding breakthroughs.
- 11:35Breakthroughs are exciting, but they're not the only
- 11:38form of success.
- 11:40Build smaller wins first and they create the
- 11:44foundation that makes larger breakthroughs possible.
- 11:50Number 15.
- 11:51Stop comparing your beginning with somebody else's highlight.
- 11:59You're seeing someone else's polished results while living
- 12:03through your own beginning That comparison is unfair
- 12:06for a lot of people.
- 12:08Stay focused on your own path and progress
- 12:13at your own level at your own pace
- 12:15and speed.
- 12:16Number 16.
- 12:18Measure progress against where you started.
- 12:20I think that's one that requires some explanation.
- 12:25Ask yourself a better question or questions.
- 12:29Am I further ahead than I was before?
- 12:32Or am I further behind?
- 12:35That comparison gives you information you can actually
- 12:37use.
- 12:38Is what am I doing right now is
- 12:40it helping in doing something for the greater
- 12:42good of all concerned?
- 12:43Or no.
- 12:45Number 17.
- 12:47Tiny improvements compound.
- 12:49A tiny improvement may feel insignificant today.
- 12:53Repeat it over weeks, months, and years.
- 12:56Those improvements can create enormous differences.
- 12:59Small doesn't mean powerless.
- 13:0218.
- 13:03Consistency makes ordinary actions powerful.
- 13:07An ordinary action performed once might not change
- 13:11much.
- 13:13Perform it consistently.
- 13:14Its impact multiplies.
- 13:18Consistency turns simple behaviors into momentum.
- 13:22That's something a lot of people miss in
- 13:25life.
- 13:26Why?
- 13:28Because people are racing to get to the
- 13:30end and they don't take the time to
- 13:32understand what's going on in their life.
- 13:34I think that's probably one of the biggest
- 13:36things that I can actually tell you.
- 13:38Number 19.
- 13:40A difficult day can still contain a win.
- 13:45Not every day will be productive or easy.
- 13:49On a difficult day, you win and you
- 13:55may simply be doing the one thing that
- 13:58mattered most.
- 13:59That still counts.
- 14:01Number 20.
- 14:02Define what winning means before the day actually
- 14:05begins.
- 14:06If you never define success, you can accomplish
- 14:11plenty and still feel behind.
- 14:15Decide what a meaningful win looks like before
- 14:18the day even starts.
- 14:2021.
- 14:22Give yourself credit for meaningful efforts.
- 14:26I think that's an important one guys.
- 14:29A very important one.
- 14:31Meaningful efforts.
- 14:32Results matter, but meaningful effort matters too.
- 14:35Sometimes you do everything correctly and the result,
- 14:39well, unfortunately guys, it takes longer to actually
- 14:44accomplish and I think that frustrates some people.
- 14:47That it takes longer.
- 14:49Recognize the work you're putting into and being
- 14:54able to move forward.
- 14:55That's really powerful.
- 14:57Number 22.
- 14:58Use yesterday's progress as today's starting point.
- 15:01You don't have to restart from zero guys
- 15:03every morning.
- 15:05Yesterday taught you something and moved you somewhere.
- 15:10Build from that position today.
- 15:12Small victories can restore motivation.
- 15:15Number 23.
- 15:17When motivation disappears don't always wait for inspiration.
- 15:25Create a small victory.
- 15:28Completing something manageable can restart the emotional engine
- 15:31you thought had stalled on you.
- 15:34Number 24.
- 15:35Success does not always arrive dramatically.
- 15:38Sometimes success, guys, it does something interesting.
- 15:45It doesn't come with applause, announcements, or a
- 15:51giant breakthrough.
- 15:52Sometimes it quietly appears through dozens of small
- 15:55decisions made consistently.
- 15:58Number 25.
- 16:00Learn to recognize quiet progress.
- 16:03Maybe you react differently than you did six
- 16:08months ago.
- 16:08Maybe something difficult has become easier.
- 16:12Maybe you recover faster after setbacks.
- 16:15Those are wins too.
- 16:16I remember when I was in Toastmasters a
- 16:18long time ago and I remember getting to
- 16:22the very end and I remember this one
- 16:24part that was a little bit confusing to
- 16:26me.
- 16:28So what I did for a while was,
- 16:30to be honest, I procrastinated.
- 16:32This was after I graduated college.
- 16:34I procrastinated.
- 16:36I was very close to the end but
- 16:37I just procrastinated.
- 16:39One of my team leaders said, Hey, John,
- 16:41what are you stuck on?
- 16:43I'm like, everything.
- 16:44Well, what do you have left?
- 16:45Well, the last speech.
- 16:47Well, where are you?
- 16:48I don't really know because the book is
- 16:50confusing.
- 16:50Oh, so you don't know how to do
- 16:51the last speech.
- 16:52I don't know what they want in the
- 16:53last speech.
- 16:56Okay?
- 16:58That's an important thing to understand.
- 17:03I think that's a very important thing that
- 17:08you may not understand.
- 17:11And we've got to be mindful of it,
- 17:12right?
- 17:13And when we're mindful of things, we're able
- 17:16to change our perception, which changes our action,
- 17:20which is ultimately going to change our result.
- 17:24What we did six months ago is different.
- 17:29Like I said, something difficult happens but then
- 17:33something gets easier.
- 17:36You can recover, right?
- 17:38But it doesn't seem like when you're doing
- 17:40it that you're going to recover.
- 17:43I think that's the fear.
- 17:46We're worried that we're going to fall.
- 17:49Right?
- 17:51We're worried that we're going to fall.
- 17:53I think that's a very important thing.
- 18:06I think a lot of people stop in
- 18:10the middle.
- 18:10You know what I've heard?
- 18:11They fall because they stop in the middle
- 18:14of something.
- 18:16If they would just go through with it,
- 18:18they're not going to fall.
- 18:21Okay?
- 18:22They're not going to fall.
- 18:23I think that's a very important thing.
- 18:26It's an important realization for us to make.
- 18:29Because you react differently and then your perceptions
- 18:34change.
- 18:36Your actions change.
- 18:38And then your results change.
- 18:40Number 26.
- 18:42Let one win lead naturally into another.
- 18:46It's kind of like the ebbs and flows
- 18:48of life, right?
- 18:49Let one breath lead naturally to the other.
- 18:52And that breath lead naturally back into the
- 18:55other.
- 18:56People do something.
- 18:58They panic.
- 19:02They panic.
- 19:05Big problem.
- 19:08There was no reason to panic.
- 19:11Right?
- 19:12After completing something, ask, what's the next reasonable
- 19:16step I should take?
- 19:17Don't immediately demand a giant leap.
- 19:20Let momentum carry you naturally into another achievable
- 19:24action.
- 19:25Don't expect to get to the other side
- 19:27of the planet or the universe, right?
- 19:30Don't.
- 19:32You're going to be, unfortunately, guys, you're going
- 19:34to be disappointed.
- 19:35And I don't want to see anybody here
- 19:36disappointed.
- 19:37But that's actually what's going to happen.
- 19:40Take baby steps.
- 19:43Baby steps get us to the main part
- 19:48of our life.
- 19:51Consistency.
- 19:51Number 27, evidence is stronger than empty self
- 19:56-talk.
- 19:57I always say to people, you know, the
- 20:00talk sounds great, but are they walking the
- 20:03talk or are they just talking the talk?
- 20:06Are they living, breathing, and acting with their
- 20:11own concepts?
- 20:15Positive words can help, but evidence is powerful
- 20:18instead of only saving and saying out loud,
- 20:22I can do this.
- 20:25Create experiences that allow you to say, I
- 20:28know I can because I've done it before
- 20:32and I'm going to do it again.
- 20:37That's a very, very important thing, guys.
- 20:41Very important thing.
- 20:43Number 28, build confidence through things you can
- 20:47point to.
- 20:48Create tangible evidence.
- 20:50A finished product, a project, a completed workout,
- 20:55a difficult conversation, a paper, a thesis, a
- 21:00book, a song, a program, one that you
- 21:07had in your head and you finally completed.
- 21:09A commitment you kept and you built confidence
- 21:13around reality and now your body's like, hey,
- 21:15you know what?
- 21:16I can do this again.
- 21:17And you can.
- 21:19And then it's like you get this inner
- 21:21strength to move forward.
- 21:23I think that's such an amazing thing when
- 21:25we can get that inner strength to move
- 21:28forward.
- 21:31That's a very important thing for a lot
- 21:34of us to realize, that we've got to
- 21:38move forward.
- 21:44Very important to be able to move forward.
- 21:49So, number 29 says become someone who notices
- 21:52forward movement.
- 21:54You know, a lot of times the movement
- 21:56is going forward, but you're really not actually
- 21:58moving forward.
- 22:00Train yourself to recognize progress instead of automatically
- 22:03searching for everything that went wrong.
- 22:07What you notice influences the story.
- 22:10You tell yourself about who you are, right?
- 22:14Who you are.
- 22:16And I think when we start to recognize
- 22:19that our life just changes.
- 22:23When we're aware of those subtle things in
- 22:25life, it's like, oh my gosh, I didn't
- 22:30know it was that way.
- 22:32If I would have known that, I would
- 22:35have changed my actions.
- 22:38Number 30, guys.
- 22:40Stack enough small wins and your self-perception
- 22:45can change.
- 22:46Now, not overnight, but it will gradually start
- 22:50to change.
- 22:52This is where everything comes full circle and
- 22:55together.
- 22:56One small win may not transform your life
- 22:59overnight, as I said.
- 23:01But enough small wins create evidence and will
- 23:05build a momentum.
- 23:08Evidence creates belief.
- 23:09Belief changes how you act, and repeat actions
- 23:13can change how you see yourself.
- 23:15See, we act out how we perceive ourselves
- 23:19to be, regardless of how we really are
- 23:21or not.
- 23:22Stop waiting for one enormous victory to finally
- 23:27give yourself permission to feel confident.
- 23:29Everyone does it like, well, I don't have
- 23:31proof.
- 23:33Of course not.
- 23:34You're trying to build a Taj Mahal, and
- 23:36you can't even build the front door.
- 23:39Start collecting evidence.
- 23:41Finish something.
- 23:42Keep one promise.
- 23:44Take one meaningful step, then take another.
- 23:47Your progress doesn't have to impress everybody else
- 23:50to matter.
- 23:52Many people think it does.
- 23:54It's not a personality contest.
- 23:56Then take another step.
- 23:58Be consistent on it.
- 24:00Say amounts of steps consistently every day.
- 24:03Your progress doesn't have to impress everybody else
- 24:05to matter, as I said.
- 24:06Small wins create movement.
- 24:09Movement creates evidence.
- 24:11Evidence strengthens confidence, and confidence makes the next
- 24:14move easier.
- 24:15That is how momentum begins to compound.
- 24:19Similar to compounding money in your bank account.
- 24:23This is how momentum begins to compound.
- 24:25Remember, you don't have to change everything today.
- 24:29You just have to create a win you
- 24:31can build on tomorrow.
- 24:33Ladies and gentlemen, I'm John Seymour, serial entrepreneur,
- 24:38and this has been another amazing, powerful episode
- 24:41of Inspirations for Your Life.
- 24:44Now, I know a lot of things that
- 24:45we talked about tonight might seem scary or
- 24:50worrisome to you.
- 24:51They should not.
- 24:53The more that you get in and do
- 24:55these things, the easier your life is going
- 24:58to be.
- 24:59When we learn the lesson, our life changes.
- 25:03Again, I don't want to promise and tell
- 25:05you that this is going to happen overnight,
- 25:07because guess what, guys?
- 25:08It will not happen overnight.
- 25:10I'm sorry.
- 25:10It will not happen overnight.
- 25:11Get that out of your head.
- 25:13If it happens, great, but don't expect it
- 25:15overnight.
- 25:18We have to remember something.
- 25:21We have to remember that we created this
- 25:23pattern long ago in our life.
- 25:2730, 60, 90, 108 days or longer, we
- 25:30created this pattern in our life.
- 25:38That's powerful, guys.
- 25:45That's powerful.
- 25:47Very powerful.
- 25:49So powerful that I think people don't really
- 25:53understand what's going on or why something is
- 25:56going on.
- 25:57Right?
- 25:59When we step back and say, wait a
- 26:02minute, what am I actually doing?
- 26:04That's pretty amazing.
- 26:13That's how we have to do it.
- 26:14We have to take things step by step
- 26:16by step.
- 26:17We have to align ourselves to the subtle
- 26:21differences.
- 26:22I have a candy wrapper here.
- 26:23If you're listening, you can't see, but I'm
- 26:25holding up a Quaker chewy candy wrapper.
- 26:28And if I hold this together in a
- 26:31certain way, you probably can't tell that it's
- 26:34been ripped depending on how I hold it.
- 26:38But if I was to move it or
- 26:40if you were just to be a little
- 26:41closer on a different angle, you could say,
- 26:43wait a minute, that candy bar is actually
- 26:46already opened or ripped open.
- 26:48So subtle perceptions can help us.
- 26:51It could be in colors.
- 26:52It can be in our work.
- 26:54It could be in our relationships.
- 26:56Noticing what doesn't fit in can sometimes be
- 27:00the real key to helping us grow.
- 27:04So remember, ladies and gentlemen, momentum doesn't always
- 27:07begin with a massive breakthrough.
- 27:09Sometimes it begins with one small win that
- 27:13proves you're capable of more.
- 27:17Until next time, keep moving forward, keep building
- 27:21your confidence and keep becoming, ladies and gentlemen,
- 27:24the person you know you can be.
- 27:26I know sometimes this sounds scary.
- 27:28I get it.
- 27:30But you've got to learn the lesson.
- 27:34Once you learn the lesson, life is like
- 27:41an open oyster.
- 27:43You can have, do, or be anything you
- 27:45want to be.
- 27:46We first got to learn the lessons.
- 27:49Ladies and gentlemen, I am John C.
