- 0:00The mental consciousness believes, first of all, that the
- 0:04particular viewpoint held by an individual is correct and that
- 0:09other viewpoints are wrong. The vital nature wants to assert
- 0:13itself and gain dominance. The limited and linear framework
- 0:18of the normal human consciousness ensures that there
- 0:21will be disagreement, dispute, and eventually a state of
- 0:26gridlock where opposing ideas contend with each other and no
- 0:30one is willing or able to compromise because they hold
- 0:35their own view to be the correct one.
- 0:38We see this dynamic everywhere. People who are mentally oriented
- 0:43believe that they can gather facts, organize logical
- 0:47arguments, and thereby convince people.
- 0:50People who are more emotion centered believe that by a
- 0:53simple expression of goodwill or empathy that people will come
- 0:57together and agree. Others who are centered in the
- 1:01vital nature primarily believe that through exercise of power
- 1:06and domination they will be able to get people to agree with them
- 1:10using various forms of bullying or pressure.
- 1:15None of these approaches has shown success in actual practice
- 1:20throughout all of human history. We can look on the resolution of
- 1:25disagreements, whether interpersonal or on a larger
- 1:28scale, in society and its institutions as a form of
- 1:33negotiation. The various approaches to
- 1:36negotiation as set forth above, each have their limitations,
- 1:41primarily due to the fact that there is no comprehensive
- 1:45understanding that can incorporate all sides of the
- 1:48misunderstanding. Take into account the different
- 1:52viewpoints and needs of the various parties to the
- 1:54misunderstanding, and thereby find ways to develop a synthesis
- 2:00that resolves concerns each party is holding.
- 2:05The game of chess, as played by most casual players, is a game
- 2:10of strategy that offers people the opportunity to explore
- 2:13different ways of approaching mutual problems.
- 2:17There is the problem of attack in the form of checkmating the
- 2:20opposing king, and there is the problem of defence in the form
- 2:25of protecting one's king. Those who are overly fixated on
- 2:29their own viewpoint and solution will frequently try to implement
- 2:33an attack without fully appreciating or understanding
- 2:37the other party's similar attempt to launch an attack.
- 2:41Thus, one may easily find that the attack winds up falling into
- 2:46a trap and losing to the opposing player by failing to
- 2:50see the position and plans of the other party.
- 2:54Chess players are therefore encouraged to occasionally turn
- 2:59the board around, so to speak, and look at things from the
- 3:03other player's viewpoint. A useful exercise helpful in
- 3:08negotiations and wider harmony of understanding.
- 3:13Which brings us to the art of negotiation and the role of
- 3:16shifting to a new consciousness in order to achieve what we call
- 3:20win win resolutions. The new consciousness embodies
- 3:25not only one's own particular viewpoint, but takes a more
- 3:29global view that can see, understand and incorporate in
- 3:34its more complete picture the viewpoints of other individuals
- 3:38and concerns that need to be resolved.
- 3:42Things are not either or in this consciousness, they are rather
- 3:48nuanced to appreciate not only differing viewpoints but also
- 3:52differing needs, desired outcomes and ways of seeing and
- 3:57responding. A person embedded deeply in a
- 4:00mental framework will have a hard time understanding the
- 4:03emotion centered person. The person who only sees the
- 4:07exercise of raw vital dominance and exertion of power cannot
- 4:12understand the concerns raised by the mental or the emotion
- 4:16oriented individual. Name calling and finger pointing
- 4:21are not strategies for successful resolution but
- 4:25express a basic insecurity in the power dynamic and thus
- 4:30cannot bring about a fair and balanced resolution.
- 4:35A new consciousness is one that can walk in the shoes of another
- 4:39individual, appreciate the core validity of that viewpoint from
- 4:43the other perspective, and work toward a solution that can
- 4:47address the basic needs, concerns, and views of the other
- 4:52party. It is useful to spend some time
- 4:55reflecting on different viewpoints and trying to
- 4:59appreciate where the other party is coming from Before 1 simply
- 5:03reacts with the normal mental, emotional or vital or even
- 5:08physical approaches. The resultant solution tends to
- 5:12be more harmonious, more satisfying and more stable, as
- 5:18it does not breed resentment of having had to either bow down to
- 5:21a form of vital pressure in a power dynamic or compromise
- 5:26serious beliefs simply to get along.
- 5:30Eventually, the party who feels oppressed will use any
- 5:34opportunity given in the future to overturn or disrupt the
- 5:38artificial harmony of the compromise, Sriorabindo notes
- 5:44quote. This misunderstanding between
- 5:48two minds can only be cured by a change of consciousness.
- 5:53For when one goes into a deeper consciousness first one sees the
- 5:57cause of these things and is not troubled.
- 6:00One acquires an understanding, patience and tolerance that
- 6:05makes one free from vexation and other reactions.
- 6:09If both or all grow in consciousness, then there arises
- 6:13a mental understanding of each other's viewpoints which makes
- 6:17it easier to bring in harmony and smooth working.
- 6:21It is this that should be sought by the change within.
- 6:24To create the same harmony from outside by exterior means is not
- 6:29so easy, as the human mind is stiff in its perceptions and the
- 6:34human vital insistent on its own way of action.
- 6:39Let this be your main will to grow yourself within, and let
- 6:44the clearer and deeper consciousness come, and have a
- 6:48goodwill for the same change to come in others, so that charity
- 6:52and harmony may come in the place of friction and
- 6:56misunderstanding. End Quote Reference.
