- 0:06Speaker 1: What's up everybody? Welcome into another edition of Crush City
- 0:09Speaker 1: Territory Channeler Room, joined as always by Tyler Stafford and
- 0:12Speaker 1: a very special guest on this Sunday afternoon, New Astros
- 0:16Speaker 1: pitcher Ryan Weiss. Ryan, appreciate you taking some time out
- 0:19Speaker 1: of your off season to talk to us. How are
- 0:21Speaker 1: you doing and have things settled down yet a little bit?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Because I'm sure this off season has been pretty crazy
- 0:26Speaker 1: for you.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, first and foremost, thanks for having me, guys. I mean,
- 0:30Speaker 2: in terms of have things settled down, I would say
- 0:33Speaker 2: they have not settled down. I think that's kind of
- 0:36Speaker 2: normal coming back from.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Asia, though.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It seems like you need at least like a week
- 0:40Speaker 2: or two to get your feet like ready from jet lag,
- 0:42Speaker 2: and then it's like there's just been There's been a
- 0:44Speaker 2: lot going on, but it's been a lot of good
- 0:46Speaker 2: so it's hard to complain.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I would encourage everyone that's listening, whether you're on YouTube
- 0:53Speaker 1: or whether you're on the audio platforms, to go give
- 0:57Speaker 1: Ryan a follow on TikTok. I'm not sure, Yes, I'm in.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I'm not sure how many people. I'm not sure how
- 1:03Speaker 1: many of our pod listeners are TikTok people. But Ryan
- 1:06Speaker 1: is a TikTok guy. His handle is Ryan M. Would
- 1:11Speaker 1: highly recommend giving Ryan a follow for a couple reasons. One,
- 1:13Speaker 1: it allows you to get to know him a little bit,
- 1:15Speaker 1: allows you to really get some insight onto his experience
- 1:18Speaker 1: in KBO and Korea. But I think it also tells
- 1:22Speaker 1: your backstory probably better than you know. We could be
- 1:26Speaker 1: beat around the bush with it. You know, you've got
- 1:30Speaker 1: such a remarkable story of perseverance and kind of how
- 1:33Speaker 1: you have gotten to this point. So I guess I wonder,
- 1:37Speaker 1: given all of that, given everything you've had to endure
- 1:40Speaker 1: going to Asia, everything you had to endure in your
- 1:44Speaker 1: amateur life, you know, before you got to college, things
- 1:46Speaker 1: like that, how fulfilling is it now to have a
- 1:50Speaker 1: guaranteed major league contract in your hands, a place on
- 1:53Speaker 1: a forty man roster, and a spot in a big
- 1:57Speaker 1: league rotation waiting for you when you get to West
- 1:59Speaker 1: Palm Beach.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah, in terms of the TikTok stuff, I I can't
- 2:05Speaker 2: take any of that credit. Uh, it is my wife.
- 2:08Speaker 2: She she kills it. She does such a good job.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I probably don't even.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Know how to post. But yeah, I mean in terms
- 2:18Speaker 3: of like the fulfillment.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I think if you asked me that, like a couple
- 2:22Speaker 2: of years ago, I would have been like, this is everything,
- 2:26Speaker 2: But now that's it's just not the I've I just
- 2:29Speaker 2: feel like I've matured a lot, and I don't idolize
- 2:33Speaker 2: baseball the way that I used to think, Like Christ
- 2:36Speaker 2: has just become a huge part of my life and
- 2:39Speaker 2: everything goes goes to him, and so I mean, it's
- 2:42Speaker 2: gonna be exciting. I'm I'm excited to to get there,
- 2:45Speaker 2: but I've been on a lot of different teams within
- 2:47Speaker 2: the last few years, so I'm just excited to kind
- 2:51Speaker 2: of get to get to know my new teammates and
- 2:53Speaker 2: just talk shop in the clubhouse and honestly just go
- 2:56Speaker 2: in games.
- 2:58Speaker 4: So I have a so, you know, for those that
- 3:02Speaker 4: don't know, you know, and you've been over in both
- 3:05Speaker 4: China and then you know the Atlantic League as well,
- 3:09Speaker 4: and then Korea. So I have a question, like, in
- 3:13Speaker 4: the last two years you were dominant over there, like
- 3:16Speaker 4: you were, you know, just crushing people. What is it
- 3:21Speaker 4: like going from Okay, you know, obviously I've seen your
- 3:26Speaker 4: your college status of you were just ridiculous. You're red
- 3:29Speaker 4: shirt freshman, You're hitting bombs, striking people out or whatever.
- 3:32Speaker 4: But I feel like you've had this kind of career
- 3:34Speaker 4: where you've gone from okay, top of the team, like
- 3:38Speaker 4: I'm the lead guy, to just a guy in the
- 3:40Speaker 4: minor leagues and not even making it, then going back
- 3:43Speaker 4: being this huge part of this team over here to
- 3:46Speaker 4: now being on an Astros team where you know that
- 3:50Speaker 4: that's not gonna be the first fifteen names on opening
- 3:53Speaker 4: day that anyone is you know, thinking of, not in
- 3:56Speaker 4: a bad way, but just that's the way that the
- 3:58Speaker 4: team is set up. How do you, like, I could
- 4:00Speaker 4: just who you are in the clubhouse depending on the
- 4:04Speaker 4: people you're around. Does that make sense? Like it do you?
- 4:07Speaker 4: How do you fill those roles?
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 4:09Speaker 2: I think that's I mean, that's a really good question.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I think the younger me, uh, try to be a
- 4:13Speaker 2: little bit more like a chameleon and try to fit
- 4:15Speaker 2: in in different areas.
- 4:17Speaker 3: But now like, I'm just gonna be me. If you
- 4:21Speaker 3: like that, great if not.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Like, everyone's different, so it's like you're you in some regard,
- 4:28Speaker 2: like everybody, every one of your teammates is your coworker,
- 4:31Speaker 2: but at the same time they can become your brother.
- 4:33Speaker 2: So it's like it's it's a it's a very interesting dynamic.
- 4:37Speaker 2: And I think going to Indie ball and then going
- 4:40Speaker 2: to Korea, I think that really was like super weird,
- 4:43Speaker 2: going from thirty five guys with thirty guys that speak
- 4:46Speaker 2: fluent English to nobody speaking fluent English or maybe like
- 4:50Speaker 2: one or two guys, And so I was pretty blessed.
- 4:53Speaker 2: There's a couple guys on my team that in Korea
- 4:56Speaker 2: that spoke really good English, and that was really cool
- 4:59Speaker 2: because they're English. Last year they like was okay, but
- 5:02Speaker 2: this year, because they got to practice a lot, it
- 5:03Speaker 2: got a lot better. So that was pretty cool to
- 5:05Speaker 2: kind of witness. But yeah, I would just say be
- 5:08Speaker 2: myself and and hopefully hopefully that's good enough.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You last pitched an affiliated ball in Stateside, You last
- 5:18Speaker 1: pitch an affiliated ball in twenty twenty three. Yeah, how
- 5:21Speaker 1: different are you now? How different is the pitcher now?
- 5:25Speaker 1: That was from when you were here in twenty twenty three?
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, first off, when I was in twenty
- 5:32Speaker 2: end of sorry, most of twenty two and then twenty three,
- 5:34Speaker 2: I was a reliever. I don't like being reliever. I
- 5:38Speaker 2: believe that I'm a starter. We had some really good
- 5:42Speaker 2: prospects that were coming up with the d Backs, and
- 5:45Speaker 2: I kind of hit like a little I kind of
- 5:47Speaker 2: hit a struggle in twenty one and that kind of
- 5:48Speaker 2: kicked me to the bullpen. And those guys are doing
- 5:51Speaker 2: really well now, I mean that's just kind of nature
- 5:53Speaker 2: of the game. And they were thrown better than I was,
- 5:55Speaker 2: so they deserved that spot and they earned it. And
- 5:58Speaker 2: so being able to go act to being a starter.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I like the routine. I like knowing I'm gonna get
- 6:03Speaker 2: the ball every five or six days, and I I
- 6:05Speaker 2: like knowing that I'm gonna be able to flip the
- 6:07Speaker 2: order over hopefully on a good day four times worst
- 6:10Speaker 2: case three, right, But that's I just like to compete,
- 6:15Speaker 2: and I hate going to pitch for one ning or
- 6:16Speaker 2: two innings because once I get a sweat going, I'm
- 6:18Speaker 2: like all right, like now we're in rhythm. Like now
- 6:20Speaker 2: we're kind of in the zone. Like sometimes it takes
- 6:22Speaker 2: a little bit for starting pitchers. So yeah, I would
- 6:25Speaker 2: just say being a starter is uh has been a
- 6:27Speaker 2: lot a lot more freeing for me.
- 6:29Speaker 3: It's been a lot more fun. Is that?
- 6:31Speaker 1: Is that what me the astros so attractive to you
- 6:33Speaker 1: is because I mean they have opportunities to start. This
- 6:37Speaker 1: is not this is a place that obviously needs rotation help.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And just in general, your conversations with the Astros what
- 6:44Speaker 1: intrigued you the most about them because you had you
- 6:46Speaker 1: had substantial interest from from a lot of other teams
- 6:49Speaker 1: as well.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Mm hmm, yeah, I would say, uh, I think the
- 6:53Speaker 2: the way that Dana was speaking, just the the way
- 6:57Speaker 2: that he kind of showed that he believes in me
- 7:00Speaker 2: and that he he kind of, for lack of a better term,
- 7:04Speaker 2: like he knows what he sees, and like I believe
- 7:07Speaker 2: in myself and I know there's a lot of people
- 7:09Speaker 2: that believe in a lot of other guys, but I
- 7:12Speaker 2: I do best when when someone really believes in me,
- 7:15Speaker 2: and when I know the coaching staff and the team
- 7:17Speaker 2: is behind me.
- 7:18Speaker 3: That really helps when.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I whenever I'm in a situation where it's like, oh, you,
- 7:21Speaker 2: if you don't do well today, you might be out
- 7:23Speaker 2: the door, Like that's a different kind of pressure. Like
- 7:25Speaker 2: I'd rather pitch in a championship setting to where it
- 7:27Speaker 2: like it really matters and like, oh, your life's on
- 7:30Speaker 2: the line, you know what I mean, Like I don't
- 7:31Speaker 2: I don't really think that's fun, and that's kind of
- 7:32Speaker 2: how it is in the minors, and so I was
- 7:34Speaker 2: I was very willing to go back overseas. I mean,
- 7:36Speaker 2: we my wife and I, we love it over there
- 7:39Speaker 2: in Korea, and so we just at the end of
- 7:41Speaker 2: the day decided that it had to be a really
- 7:43Speaker 2: good opportunity in the States and.
- 7:45Speaker 3: And that's kind of what it was. So that's why
- 7:47Speaker 3: we that's why we decided to do it.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I was gonna ask. I mean, obviously I would
- 7:52Speaker 4: assume that you love playing overseas. You wouldn't keep doing
- 7:55Speaker 4: it if you didn't want to do. The city that
- 7:57Speaker 4: you were in is Dejon Jean.
- 8:00Speaker 3: That's right.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Okay, So I've I've googled the you know, just trip
- 8:04Speaker 4: Advisor things to do. Do you have a Dujiano World story?
- 8:10Speaker 4: Do you know that place? I do not, Dude, Okay,
- 8:13Speaker 4: well it's number four. So if you get back over there,
- 8:16Speaker 4: it looks like Disney World, but it's an amusement park.
- 8:20Speaker 3: I'm more of like a like we like to do
- 8:23Speaker 3: a lot of things.
- 8:24Speaker 2: But in terms of like restaurants, the nine, it's uh,
- 8:27Speaker 2: it's kind of right outside of Aison outstanding. I mean,
- 8:31Speaker 2: the Crean barbecue there's it just doesn't mess around. There's
- 8:33Speaker 2: just no there's no comp for it. It's it's unreal.
- 8:37Speaker 4: So, I mean what you're you're like, what are you
- 8:40Speaker 4: doing other than I mean obviously I know what you're
- 8:42Speaker 4: doing during games, but like what does what does life
- 8:45Speaker 4: look like you for you just living over there?
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it just depends what if we have an off
- 8:50Speaker 2: day and we're home that next day, then we can
- 8:54Speaker 2: one of one of the bullpen catchers and eye and
- 8:56Speaker 2: with my parents that ever, we went fishing one day,
- 8:59Speaker 2: just kind of scoping it out, kind of seeing what's
- 9:01Speaker 2: out there, just visiting different places. There's a lot of
- 9:06Speaker 2: there's a lot of bakeries, uh over there, Like sun
- 9:09Speaker 2: Shin Dan is like a really famous bakery in Dejon.
- 9:12Speaker 2: So we go there and just kind of walk around
- 9:15Speaker 2: and just kind of try to learn stuff. I mean,
- 9:17Speaker 2: it's so it's so different. It was cool when we
- 9:19Speaker 2: were in Seoul just being able to go to the
- 9:21Speaker 2: different museums and and things that they have out there.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Like when you're walking into it, you're like this, like
- 9:27Speaker 2: it's just so much bigger than you. And it's like
- 9:28Speaker 2: it's just really cool because there's way more history in
- 9:31Speaker 2: Korea than there is in America, which is like for
- 9:34Speaker 2: Americans it's probably wild to think about.
- 9:37Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean it's it's just super interesting, super cool.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Did you enjoy the nickname that you got in Dejon
- 9:44Speaker 1: you are? You are Dejon Jesus.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Yeah, that was that was tough. I mean, especially being
- 9:49Speaker 3: a follower like it was.
- 9:51Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's obviously an honor, but like, I
- 9:54Speaker 2: don't put myself in that same category at all. So
- 9:58Speaker 2: it was like when people are, oh, you're like saving,
- 10:00Speaker 2: It's like, y'all need to chill, Like, I'm just I'm
- 10:04Speaker 2: just Ryan, Like I'm not I'm not even rying the
- 10:06Speaker 2: baseball player. I'm just Ryan, Like I'm just trying to
- 10:07Speaker 2: go out there and try to win a ball game.
- 10:10Speaker 2: And so like when people were doing that, it was
- 10:12Speaker 2: like it was kind of a way for me to
- 10:15Speaker 2: lead them towards Christ in a little bit, like just
- 10:17Speaker 2: trying to give God the glory. But at the end
- 10:19Speaker 2: of the day, I'm like, y'all need to like, y'all.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Need to chill.
- 10:23Speaker 4: How the long hair and beard isn't doing you any
- 10:26Speaker 4: favors that.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yourself only Like right here, if I show you the
- 10:30Speaker 2: side and you'll start judging me it's pretty bad.
- 10:32Speaker 1: But as someone that as someone that pitched affiliated ball
- 10:37Speaker 1: for as long as you did and then went to
- 10:40Speaker 1: kb oh, how can you compare maybe the talent level.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I know, you haven't pitched the big leagues yet, but
- 10:46Speaker 1: you've pitched Triple A, You've pitched extensively in Triple A,
- 10:48Speaker 1: Double A. How would you compare the talent in KBO
- 10:52Speaker 1: to affiliated ball and kind of what do you think
- 10:54Speaker 1: maybe as you get back into affiliated ball and you
- 10:57Speaker 1: get to the big leagues, what do you think maybe
- 10:58Speaker 1: the biggest adjustments will be for you going from that
- 11:00Speaker 1: league back to the big leagues.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean in terms of the baseball we all
- 11:05Speaker 2: kind of know how baseball is nowadays. It's more like
- 11:08Speaker 2: they like fans and owners, like they want to see
- 11:11Speaker 2: home runs. And I haven't been there in the last
- 11:13Speaker 2: two years, so I can't speak too much of how
- 11:15Speaker 2: the last two years have been. But they just play
- 11:18Speaker 2: like solid, fundamental baseball. If there's a guy on second,
- 11:21Speaker 2: they're trying to push him over or like they're trying
- 11:23Speaker 2: to like have something to the right side. And so
- 11:26Speaker 2: that kind of taught me to like, Okay, I gotta
- 11:27Speaker 2: go in. I gotta go out Like you can't out
- 11:30Speaker 2: stuff people like. I mean, you still can, like if
- 11:32Speaker 2: you've got really good stuff, you can, but it just
- 11:35Speaker 2: it just kind of allowed me to pitch more. And
- 11:37Speaker 2: so I think the biggest adjustment coming back to the
- 11:40Speaker 2: States is probably just going to be having a lot
- 11:43Speaker 2: of guys that can speak English in the clubhouse.
- 11:47Speaker 3: It sounds crazy, but that's just what it is.
- 11:49Speaker 2: It's gonna be weird not having a translator by my
- 11:51Speaker 2: side at all times.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I think your your first batting practice with Jordan Alvarez
- 11:55Speaker 4: might sound a little different than than some.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Of the ones.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I'm telling you that he's got Jews, but there's there's
- 12:01Speaker 2: some guys out there that can.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I can hit it too.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Yeah, did you have a pre existing relationship with anyone
- 12:06Speaker 1: with the Astros? Do you know anyone as you're walking
- 12:09Speaker 1: into this clubhouse?
- 12:09Speaker 2: I was. I was in spring training with Christian Walker
- 12:12Speaker 2: in twenty two with the d Backs, but I wasn't
- 12:16Speaker 2: there for long.
- 12:16Speaker 3: So yeah, I got I got to send out pretty quickly.
- 12:20Speaker 1: So fur Astras fans that are listening to this have
- 12:24Speaker 1: have not really seen you pitch, have not really you know, know,
- 12:27Speaker 1: much about your arsenal, kind of how you get guys out.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Describe yourself as a pitcher, describe you know what you
- 12:33Speaker 1: give us your arsenal, and give us kind of maybe
- 12:35Speaker 1: what you think your strengths are when you're on the mound.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I foreseen fastball, slider, curveball, and then
- 12:44Speaker 2: change up. So I mean pretty I feel like pretty
- 12:46Speaker 2: standard like a lot of guys. But I just try
- 12:48Speaker 2: to compete in the zone. I don't like walking guys.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I don't like giving up free bases.
- 12:54Speaker 3: I really just want to. I just want to.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Compete, really, and if I get beat, I want you
- 12:58Speaker 2: to beat me. I don't want to beat my I
- 13:00Speaker 2: don't want to give you three bases. I don't want
- 13:01Speaker 2: to hit you. I don't like that's just not fun.
- 13:03Speaker 2: But nobody wants to watch that either, So yeah, I
- 13:06Speaker 2: just I just like to compete, no matter who it is.
- 13:08Speaker 2: And I think that's what That's probably why I'm still
- 13:11Speaker 2: playing this game, is just because I like to compete.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I got I got news for you. You also throw
- 13:15Speaker 4: a sinker. You just might not know it yet, but yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 4: sometime sometimes it'll go a little bit. Yeah, that's not
- 13:23Speaker 4: that's part of we're in the uniform here. I think
- 13:24Speaker 4: they just that just comes standard in the in the
- 13:27Speaker 4: locker room, they throw a sinker at you.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yeah, probably, Yeah, I was gonna ask. So, Like, obviously,
- 13:32Speaker 1: the astros are pretty renowned for they get pictures and
- 13:36Speaker 1: they make them better. They get good pictures and make
- 13:38Speaker 1: them great. They get average pictures and make them good.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Like they they have got a track record of doing
- 13:43Speaker 1: this for the past ten years. I guess I wonder
- 13:46Speaker 1: when you were talking to them, when you were negotiating
- 13:48Speaker 1: with them, or maybe even you know, when you got
- 13:50Speaker 1: up here to take your physical and you got to
- 13:52Speaker 1: meet some people, were they able to or did they
- 13:55Speaker 1: offer you some insights as to what they may I
- 13:58Speaker 1: don't know if tinker's the right word. Just some things
- 14:00Speaker 1: that they want to try with you. Some pitch shape,
- 14:02Speaker 1: some pitch locations. Did you guys talk about that at
- 14:05Speaker 1: all or is that gonna that gonna wait till spring training?
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm that's probably gonna wait till spring I know
- 14:11Speaker 2: at least that first, just kind of putting faces to
- 14:14Speaker 2: names and just getting introduced to several people and then
- 14:18Speaker 2: just trying to learn learn each other, learn how each
- 14:22Speaker 2: other work like there's some guys that don't like coaching
- 14:25Speaker 2: at all, and that's and that's fine. They do really well,
- 14:26Speaker 2: and there's some guys that want everything. I'm just I'm
- 14:30Speaker 2: kind of a guy. I'm very culfortable. I'll just if
- 14:32Speaker 2: you got if you have a reason on why you
- 14:34Speaker 2: want me to do something and why it might work,
- 14:36Speaker 2: then let's just be mature, have a conversation about it
- 14:39Speaker 2: and and kind of see where that goes. But yeah,
- 14:42Speaker 2: I'm super interested. I know that it's a great organization,
- 14:46Speaker 2: and I mean it's gonna be it's gonna be exciting.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I don't know how they like, like you said, they
- 14:50Speaker 2: get it. They just get guys better. I don't know
- 14:51Speaker 2: how they do it. So I'm I'm kind of eager
- 14:54Speaker 2: to see how that how that goes down. But yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 2: hope hopefully they can they can help me and I
- 14:59Speaker 2: can help them.
- 15:02Speaker 1: It's one thing you keep mentioning about, you know, being
- 15:04Speaker 1: in KBO is you know you didn't have a bunch
- 15:05Speaker 1: of people around you that that spoke English? Did you
- 15:09Speaker 1: get did you learn any Korean?
- 15:11Speaker 3: Can are you?
- 15:12Speaker 1: Can?
- 15:12Speaker 4: You?
- 15:13Speaker 1: How how is your Korean?
- 15:15Speaker 3: Mine's pretty bad? Mine's pretty bad.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I pretty much only know the bad words. And then
- 15:20Speaker 2: my wife, she's pretty she's pretty fluent. Actually, she could
- 15:22Speaker 2: probably hold like a fifteen to twenty minute conversation in Korean.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Like it's super impressive. But yeah, I'm pretty worthless in
- 15:29Speaker 2: that regard.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I think that's how I am with spent with Baseball
- 15:32Speaker 1: Spanish at this point, I know enough baseball Spanish to like, like,
- 15:37Speaker 1: I know what people are saying. I know again, I
- 15:38Speaker 1: know the curse words, but I don't think I know.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I don't think I know much else.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Did they?
- 15:42Speaker 1: So, did the team give you an interpreter when you
- 15:45Speaker 1: went over there? Did you have to bring one on
- 15:47Speaker 1: your own?
- 15:48Speaker 2: No, that would be really hard. I wouldn't even know
- 15:49Speaker 2: how how I would navigate that. Yeah, they provided one
- 15:53Speaker 2: last year, and then I ended up having the same
- 15:56Speaker 2: one from last year that I did this past year,
- 15:58Speaker 2: So like a year and a half with the same
- 16:00Speaker 2: I was. It was really cool. I mean, you just
- 16:01Speaker 2: get to know each other and it's kind of funny,
- 16:05Speaker 2: like that dynamic when he comes to the mountain, because
- 16:07Speaker 2: like him and I just joke around all the time usually,
- 16:09Speaker 2: and then it's like when it's time for him to
- 16:10Speaker 2: be serious, I'm like just kind of look at him like,
- 16:13Speaker 2: are you gonna like say something weird or like you
- 16:14Speaker 2: can like actually deliver the message.
- 16:16Speaker 3: But but he was really good. I mean, I I
- 16:18Speaker 3: don't think.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I could have had this success out there, definitely without
- 16:22Speaker 2: my wife, but without without him.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I mean, he was he was awesome.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Do you have a favorite K pop Demon Hunters song?
- 16:29Speaker 3: Golden? I mean it's It's election of course.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, yeah, I'm with you.
- 16:35Speaker 1: One thing that's always been interesting to me and I
- 16:37Speaker 1: think we're seeing more and more as Japanese players obviously
- 16:41Speaker 1: become more prevalent and are covered more widely in the States,
- 16:45Speaker 1: is the way that well, certainly the Japanese media but
- 16:49Speaker 1: also just I think Asian media at large covers the sport.
- 16:54Speaker 1: They they ask very specific questions like they want to know,
- 16:58Speaker 1: like specifically, like why you threw this pitch in this
- 17:00Speaker 1: like they are it's a very different way if.
- 17:03Speaker 2: You over there, like they don't and that, and it's
- 17:06Speaker 2: really cool like that that's how they treat it. It's like, Okay,
- 17:08Speaker 2: the how you pitched today was good, not like oh
- 17:11Speaker 2: your game was good, you know what I mean?
- 17:12Speaker 3: Like they like accounts matter, and then.
- 17:16Speaker 1: That's why I wanted to ask you, like, again, I
- 17:18Speaker 1: don't know how much media exposure you got. I mean
- 17:21Speaker 1: you did obviously state side, But what was the difference
- 17:23Speaker 1: in kind of the questions they were asking you and
- 17:25Speaker 1: kind of what they wanted to know about what went
- 17:29Speaker 1: on in the game, Because you know, from my vantage point,
- 17:32Speaker 1: like when I go into a clubhouse after a game,
- 17:34Speaker 1: like I'm I'm searching for the why, like why did
- 17:37Speaker 1: this happen? Why did this guy have such a good game,
- 17:40Speaker 1: Why did this guy have such a poor game? Or whatever.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Like it's like if you've ever been in a scrum
- 17:45Speaker 1: talking to Otani or talking to Yamamoto or any of
- 17:48Speaker 1: these guys, it is the way they cover and talk
- 17:51Speaker 1: about the game could not be different than the way
- 17:54Speaker 1: American media doesn't.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's honestly, like it's it's beautiful way they do it.
- 17:59Speaker 2: They think about a different And I think I would
- 18:02Speaker 2: say it was easier for me because like I just
- 18:05Speaker 2: I mean, it was the catcher that did all the
- 18:06Speaker 2: hard work, Like he's the one that like on the
- 18:08Speaker 2: bus rides, like I can see him on his phone
- 18:10Speaker 2: just like looking at the next team for.
- 18:12Speaker 3: The next game.
- 18:13Speaker 2: And it was like catchers are just different, like they
- 18:15Speaker 2: just love baseball and the the reason on why he
- 18:19Speaker 2: wants to throw a certain pitch and why, like I
- 18:22Speaker 2: don't really question it. I'm a kiss guy, keep it simple, stupid,
- 18:25Speaker 2: So like I just really try to trust the catcher
- 18:29Speaker 2: and if if I shake and he puts it down again.
- 18:31Speaker 3: I'm like all right, like I'm sorry, like dang, I'm sorry, and.
- 18:34Speaker 2: So I mean, I just I mean it was pretty
- 18:36Speaker 2: much them, like they're the reason why I had success.
- 18:37Speaker 2: So it was I feel like those questions were easy
- 18:40Speaker 2: for me to navigate because I'd be like, oh, it's
- 18:42Speaker 2: my catcher.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's always It's has always been interesting to me,
- 18:48Speaker 1: like sharing press boxes now with a lot of Asian
- 18:51Speaker 1: media and a lot of like especially Japanese reporters that
- 18:53Speaker 1: that come in and certainly think about the game in
- 18:57Speaker 1: a different way. But it's it's certainly it's I think
- 19:00Speaker 1: beautiful is the perfect way to say it, because they
- 19:02Speaker 1: they appreciate the art of the game when I don't
- 19:04Speaker 1: think I don't think that gets appreciated a lot, just
- 19:07Speaker 1: in the in the coverage state side.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's a it's more like talent here.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I feel like it's like they're just super talented, whereas
- 19:16Speaker 2: there it's like your pitch is on and the way
- 19:18Speaker 2: you can spin the ball and manipulate the ball, like
- 19:21Speaker 2: they even the players out there, the ones that don't
- 19:24Speaker 2: speak English, are coming up and asking questions and it's
- 19:26Speaker 2: like that's that's like a very vulnerable place to be
- 19:30Speaker 2: as someone who doesn't know the language, like asking a
- 19:32Speaker 2: question and understanding the answer.
- 19:34Speaker 3: So I mean, they just love to learn. I mean
- 19:36Speaker 3: they love to learn out.
- 19:37Speaker 2: There, and they don't really have a lot of pride,
- 19:39Speaker 2: Like if a guy's working on another pitch, like he's
- 19:42Speaker 2: not afraid to work on two other pitches but not
- 19:44Speaker 2: use them, Like they're just not afraid.
- 19:46Speaker 4: All right, Well, Chandler, you're going to be in there,
- 19:48Speaker 4: so I'm going to text you like a two and
- 19:50Speaker 4: a half minute long question to ask Ryan after his
- 19:53Speaker 4: first start, just extremely detailed every thought on the game.
- 19:57Speaker 3: We'll see who's catching me.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I do wonder, you know, Tyler, just reference after your
- 20:04Speaker 1: first start that will be your major league debut. Has
- 20:09Speaker 1: that has that kind of hit you yet or or
- 20:11Speaker 1: do you think it'll maybe wait till like the day
- 20:13Speaker 1: it actually happens.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Nah, I think when I was on the forty mate
- 20:16Speaker 2: with the d Backs, I was I mean, I was itching.
- 20:19Speaker 3: I was itching to get up. Same with the Royals,
- 20:21Speaker 3: I was itching.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I put so much thought into it's gonna sound funny,
- 20:26Speaker 2: but like what I was gonna wear to the stadium
- 20:27Speaker 2: on my debut, Like I like, I was like all
- 20:30Speaker 2: into it, and now I just like I think I
- 20:32Speaker 2: thought about it too much to where it was like unhealthy,
- 20:36Speaker 2: and like that's why going to create was so good
- 20:38Speaker 2: for me, because I just completely removed myself from like
- 20:41Speaker 2: all of that. And so I mean it's like I said,
- 20:43Speaker 2: it's gonna it'll be cool, I think, But like I'm
- 20:46Speaker 2: just I just want to pitch. I just want to
- 20:49Speaker 2: compete and hopefully we win. Like that's really all all
- 20:51Speaker 2: that matters at the end of the day.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I'm curious, what, what what allowed your mind to shift?
- 20:57Speaker 1: Like was it simply going to Korea or was like
- 20:59Speaker 1: what what out you to make that draft such a
- 21:01Speaker 1: drastic change, because that does seem pretty like a drastic
- 21:06Speaker 1: difference in the way of thinking.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think I was idolizing it. I don't
- 21:10Speaker 2: think I was as secure in myself and and and whatnot,
- 21:14Speaker 2: and I was just idolizing the thought of being a
- 21:16Speaker 2: big leaguer, and I was like, it's really like I'd
- 21:19Speaker 2: rather be a better person, which I try to be.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I'm probably not, but I try to be a better person,
- 21:24Speaker 2: and then like baseball will be what it's gonna be,
- 21:27Speaker 2: and I'm just gonna I'm just gonna trust in God
- 21:28Speaker 2: and trust that whatever plan he has is what I'm
- 21:31Speaker 2: supposed to do. And if this is where he wants
- 21:34Speaker 2: me to meet, then I just want to be able
- 21:35Speaker 2: to impact people around me.
- 21:37Speaker 3: And yeah, like what I want to say, I probably shouldn't.
- 21:40Speaker 3: So yeah, that's that's probably what It's probably good.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Good answer media training already. I don't know, Ryan, this
- 21:49Speaker 1: has been excellent. I appreciate you taking We appreciate you
- 21:52Speaker 1: taking time to talk to us today. We told you
- 21:54Speaker 1: we keep you fifteen to twenty minutes. We're going up
- 21:56Speaker 1: to twenty two minutes now, so we like to be
- 21:58Speaker 1: like to be true what we say. So that's about the.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Shortest Chandler's done, actually, because normally he lies and then
- 22:04Speaker 4: we're here two and a half times what he says.
- 22:06Speaker 4: So he got you out on time today. He didn't like, Yeah,
- 22:10Speaker 4: that's what he was.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Okay, don't put words in my mouth. Come on, that's
- 22:15Speaker 1: not cool.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Ryan.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Again, this was excellent. Again, if you want to see
- 22:21Speaker 1: Ryan and his wife's work on TikTok, Ryan M Ryan
- 22:26Speaker 1: m Weiss on TikTok. I think that will allow a
- 22:29Speaker 1: lot of you to to really appreciate kind of what
- 22:31Speaker 1: it was like in KBO, what Ryan, kind of how
- 22:35Speaker 1: Ryan got to this point and you can know a
- 22:38Speaker 1: lot more about him before reporting to West Palm Beach
- 22:40Speaker 1: in February for spring training with the Ashers. Ryan, this
- 22:43Speaker 1: was great. Thank you so much for the time, and
- 22:46Speaker 1: enjoy the rest of your off season.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Sounds good, guys, Thanks for having me all right.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Thanks Ryan,
