Transcript
- 0:03Pipe down, Coward. Hi.
- 0:05Good afternoon, Millery Condon on a Friday, a football Friday
- 0:10at that. Welcome the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:12Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller for the
- 0:14next couple of hours, talking sports with you.
- 0:17Appreciate you starting your afternoon with us.
- 0:19Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:21We will in 20 minutes talk with an Iowa State beat reporter.
- 0:25Eugene Repay covers them for the Des Moines Register.
- 0:27Hopefully Eugene is able to join us in 20 minutes.
- 0:31Apparently, there's a couple of things going on that may prevent
- 0:34him from doing so. So we'll talk to Eugene.
- 0:36Fingers crossed in 20 minutes. 1240.
- 0:39Tom Cacart. He is presently listening to
- 0:41coach Ben McCullum. They've got a press conference
- 0:43going on as we speak, so we'll get the latest on that.
- 0:46I will do that. Coming up at 12:40.
- 0:48Bama, Bob, Trent and I will take a look at the championship games
- 0:52in college football to kick off the one O clock hour off to
- 0:55Vegas where we'll catch up with Mike Palm, VP of operations at
- 0:58Circa Sports. Well, we're going to do a little
- 1:01NFL kind of preview some of the championship games this morning
- 1:04to kick things off, but that seemingly is off the table with
- 1:08the news. It's been crazy. 24 hours.
- 1:10Trent the Willy, or is he or isn't he?
- 1:13Matt Campbell leaving Iowa State to go to Penn State and it now
- 1:16looks as though although nothing official yet, but a number of
- 1:20national media reporting. I don't know if it's just one
- 1:22and then everybody's regurgitating with Pete Nacos is
- 1:25how you say his name Nacos from on three said and Dellinger is
- 1:29piled on and all of the ones that you would think of the
- 1:32cover the sport regurgitating the same finalizing agreement.
- 1:36Apparently talks began on Wednesday.
- 1:38They were in Ames yesterday. Penn State was and and here we
- 1:43are. So I guess just throw it at you.
- 1:45What do you think? This from Pete Thamel.
- 1:48The sides met in Iowa Thursday night have been looking toward
- 1:51an agreement since nothing is signed and there's still a few
- 1:54steps remaining for this to come to fruition.
- 1:56That's from Pete Thamel 16 minutes ago all.
- 1:59Right, so still hope for Iowa State fans.
- 2:01There's not over yet some of the things that Franklin was
- 2:05required to do. I don't think Campbell would
- 2:08embrace with open arms. See that as boosters, Meeting
- 2:11with the head coach on game day. A mandatory luncheon with
- 2:15boosters on Wednesday. I just don't think that's him in
- 2:20a nutshell. But it's Penn State, and more
- 2:23importantly or as importantly, it's the Big 10.
- 2:27It's the Big 10. There's two conferences that
- 2:29rule the roost. One of them is the Big 10.
- 2:31The other is the SEC. This is Penn State when they
- 2:34come calling. It's 15 years removed from the
- 2:37scandal. Matt Campbell, I think, would be
- 2:41a fool not to go Trent. I really do.
- 2:43There's been involvements with a number of high profile jobs.
- 2:46The USC job was his and then whatever happened last minute
- 2:50either Lincoln Riley said yes and then Campbell, the papers
- 2:54that he had didn't happen. He's been involved in Florida
- 2:56State. He's been involved in a lot of
- 2:57different places. But this is another one of the
- 2:59blue blood jobs that is difficult.
- 3:01Even with the mess that has been the last 50 whatever days and
- 3:04it's been a mess and it's been an embarrassment, this is still
- 3:07a place where you can win a national championship.
- 3:10Yeah, without a doubt. No, I don't think it's going to
- 3:11happen next year with what's left in the cupboard.
- 3:13Look, here's what I was told yesterday.
- 3:15I have no idea if it's true. I just want to put this out
- 3:17there because this is what I was told when the Franklin stuff
- 3:20first went down. The Penn State reached out to
- 3:23Campbell's representatives in October, as I'm sure they
- 3:26reached out to a lot of coaches in October.
- 3:28I'm not saying Matt Campbell got the first call.
- 3:30I have no idea, but true to what I think, I believe that Matt
- 3:34Campbell's makeup is I don't want to talk to anything to my
- 3:37anybody till my season's over. And if that and he's and this is
- 3:40what part of it was also part of the sentence.
- 3:43And if this removes me from consideration, so be it.
- 3:46I'm going to finish this year and then if it's still an
- 3:49option, I would listen. That's what I was told going
- 3:53back to October. Do we want to start with the
- 3:56Penn State part of it, get that out of the way and then get into
- 3:58the Iowa State? Part of it, well, there's so
- 4:00many layers, right? Right.
- 4:01And they, yeah, obviously are intertwined now.
- 4:03I think now Penn State went and got Kelsey Anderson and what
- 4:06that turned into and what kind of gut punch it would be if Matt
- 4:09Campbell elevates Penn State to. I mean, they're a bad
- 4:11interception away for playing for a national title.
- 4:13Yeah. That's that's how.
- 4:15Close This program was. And then the following year on
- 4:19the heels. Of that that.
- 4:20Pre season #1 for a lot of people.
- 4:22Doesn't even see the middle of October the coach that took him
- 4:25to that bad pick away from playing for Natty.
- 4:29With the Penn State part of it, though, it is one of the few
- 4:31places that I think makes a lot of sense.
- 4:34Now it's. Different home for him, close to
- 4:36home. Absolutely.
- 4:37It's different being out there for a couple of games.
- 4:40Well, a simple called Croatia. It's a little long.
- 4:44It's a beautiful. Camp is it?
- 4:45It's a beautiful, beautiful place.
- 4:47Getting there sucks. Right.
- 4:48You fly near Pittsburgh, right? No, there's what Harrisburg is
- 4:53like 90 minutes away. You can fly into State College,
- 4:56but you can't take like a charter plane to State College,
- 4:58right, because the airport's so small.
- 4:59It's like flying into Osage Municipal.
- 5:01I mean, it's tiny. No, wait, there's not an Osage
- 5:03municipal there. Absolutely is.
- 5:05Oh, yeah. My, my uncle used to fly in
- 5:07there with his little plate. He's an Air Force guy and he had
- 5:09a plate later in life that he flied into.
- 5:11But it's a really small place. But in terms of and it's
- 5:15different. We've seen the online fan base,
- 5:18you've seen the online fan base. You love message boards.
- 5:20I spent hours on it yesterday. I had AI had a blast last night.
- 5:24They are a different breed. Oh all college fandom is weird.
- 5:28Sure it doesn't matter. You know what Penn State fans
- 5:30are feeling right now? They don't want to be shiitake.
- 5:33Yes, absolutely. Because this is their fear right
- 5:35now. Yes Sir.
- 5:35Seems like it's going to happen, but.
- 5:37We went down this road just two days ago and and then what
- 5:41happened if you don't want to be left at the altar once again,
- 5:44getting this deep into the process, It's a different kind
- 5:47of place. But I think it is a place that
- 5:50can work for Matt Campbell with his personality.
- 5:52Now, he could have to deal with more big boosters.
- 5:54Yeah. Probably so.
- 5:56That's the reality of the situation.
- 5:57But guess what? I'm sure Ohio State is the top
- 6:00of his list. You'd have to do that there.
- 6:02You'd have to do that in Michigan.
- 6:03You'd have to do that at Notre Dame.
- 6:04That is the reality. When you move into those waters,
- 6:07you're dealing with a completely different environment than you
- 6:10do at Iowa State. And I think, though, the way
- 6:14that they're built, he'll be OK. Is he going to have to do more
- 6:17functions? Is he going to have the run that
- 6:19he had at Iowa State and basically saying exactly what he
- 6:21wants and this is what I'm going to do and I'm not going to meet
- 6:23with boosters. No, you're going to have to do
- 6:26some different things. But in order to get that job, in
- 6:28order to get to the mountaintop, a place that you're not going to
- 6:31get at Iowa State, those are the things, those are the corners
- 6:34you have to cut. Those are the changes that you
- 6:36have to make if you're Matt Campbell.
- 6:37All right, there's Penn State, boom to the side.
- 6:41What a good punch. It is Trent.
- 6:42Look what this guy's done for this program.
- 6:44Look what he's done, what he's. Done he He's made this.
- 6:48Program, yes. Let's be honest, the Dan
- 6:52McCartney, it was a nice run and getting them out of the
- 6:54wilderness that was, but it's nothing in comparison.
- 6:58To this and. In this environment of the new
- 7:00Big 12, but for the first time in 100 years, they're actually
- 7:04on a level playing field. They're finally at a place where
- 7:07week in and week out we can compete in this league.
- 7:10That was never the case in football, never the case in
- 7:13football until the new Big 12. And you have the guy.
- 7:16You have a guy that feels like he's going to be a lifer.
- 7:20Could have been. Could have been, but you know
- 7:22what, maybe he's not bored, but maybe he wants a different
- 7:28challenge and he's taken Iowa State in some ways as far as
- 7:33they can go. I get it was the COVID year, but
- 7:35for crying out loud, playing the Fiesta Bowl and won a Fiesta
- 7:38Bowl. He's taking this programs to
- 7:41heights that they've never seen they played.
- 7:43Oklahoma in a Big 12 championship, yes, and had
- 7:47opportunities in that game against Oklahoma.
- 7:50Oklahoma as we know him, not a diminished Oklahoma, not John
- 7:53Blake's Oklahoma, real Oklahoma. And he was there in that game.
- 7:58He did it twice, winning years 8 out of 10 seasons at Iowa State
- 8:04when he was hired A decade ago. If I would have told you that.
- 8:07Oh, come on. Yeah, come on, I was staying.
- 8:09They'll have some good years. It'll be a few 6 and sixes it.
- 8:11Might be an 8 and four you'll get to.
- 8:13November trying to figure out if they can find six wins in the
- 8:15remaining three games. They only need 2.
- 8:18You know that that that's. Been a a talker.
- 8:20For for decades, 30 years, absolutely for.
- 8:23You it's. So who's next?
- 8:26I mean the one name. That pops into mind instantly,
- 8:29and I love the fact that he actually left Iowa State and
- 8:33went to the NFL, and that's Nate Shieldhouse.
- 8:37Because when Nate Shield House's name came up pursuant in
- 8:42conjunction with an Iowa State topic, he was the guy that got
- 8:47in living rooms Campbell closed. But it was Nate Shield House who
- 8:52is as important to recruiting the players to Iowa State as
- 8:56anybody. Now he's been gone.
- 8:57For the last couple years and again, I love the fact that
- 9:00he's, you know, spread his wings and gone on and learned what
- 9:03it's like to in other programs at the highest level of the NF.
- 9:08I think this would make a ton of sense.
- 9:09An offensive guy, a great recruiter.
- 9:11Sure, there's going to be other names out there, but I certainly
- 9:15would have to think that if I'm Jamie Pollard.
- 9:20That that would be one of the first guys that I would reach
- 9:22out to. Top of my list is Jason Eck, the
- 9:24head coach at New Mexico. Makes sense?
- 9:26Who did a tremendous job this year at New Mexico?
- 9:29What has been their? Final record, they were 93.
- 9:31Were they that? Yeah.
- 9:32And it actually works out well. They should be playing in the
- 9:34conference championship game. They're not, but it works out
- 9:36perfectly that they're not. Look at his connections.
- 9:39He's a Wisconsin guy. Where's Jamie from?
- 9:41Wisconsin, yeah. Offensive line, how do you win
- 9:44at Iowa State? How do you win at a program like
- 9:47this? You're good up front.
- 9:49And that is an opportunity with Jason Eck that has done it and
- 9:52two difficult places when he took Idaho and got them back to.
- 9:56If you're an old timer, do you remember watching the One AA
- 9:58playoffs in Idaho? Oh, yeah, they're really good.
- 9:59Remember, they went to the FBS. They basically got kicked out of
- 10:02the FBS. They went back down.
- 10:04They had to cut a bunch of scholarship guys.
- 10:05It was a disaster. He went there and he.
- 10:07Was there the whole time or he got there and.
- 10:09He got there and changed it. Yeah, because this was like 15
- 10:12years ago that they're. Old Is he late?
- 10:1340s early 48. He's 4848 that at New Mexico.
- 10:18I don't think it'd been bull eligible in a decade.
- 10:20He gets them to 9 and three in the first year.
- 10:22You saw what they did against UCLA early in the season.
- 10:25That's the top of the list for me.
- 10:27But Mike in Waterloo, he's got some candidates.
- 10:29OK, let's get. To him, your phone lines are up.
- 10:32If you want to opine, here's your opportunity to do so.
- 10:34We got 5 or 6 minutes. I might go ahead.
- 10:36Hey, what's going on? You know my 2 leading
- 10:38candidates? Are you just?
- 10:40Yeah, are the 1 you just mentioned.
- 10:42The recruiter. That went to LA and the dark
- 10:46horse. I say get Lavar is his name
- 10:49Lavar Woods from Iowa. I think he'd be a great hire.
- 10:53What do you guys think? I mean, the guy's a genius on
- 10:55special team. So what's our what's our, what's
- 10:59what, what, what are we good at special teams?
- 11:02You know, I think you'd make a great coach.
- 11:04And and one more thing. What about this basketball team?
- 11:08Have you ever seen shooters like that?
- 11:10I can't wait to watch tomorrow at 11:00 in the morning when
- 11:12they'll take on the number one team in the country.
- 11:15Kind of gets over shadowed by all the other.
- 11:17I was crazy. I know, But you know Campbell,
- 11:19you know he was not good with the the you know he was, he's
- 11:23not very good with the press. You know he never did.
- 11:26What do you? Ever.
- 11:26He was very guarded. He was very guarded, very
- 11:29guarded. And he's going to hate it out of
- 11:32Penn State. But you know, they got Kale
- 11:34Sanderson. You put those two personalities,
- 11:36there ain't much there, you know?
- 11:38There's $10 million there. Well, I know, but I, I just hate
- 11:42that when they leave Iowa State, I think that's a great job, Iowa
- 11:45State. Or because been a great job for
- 11:47one person? Yeah, it has.
- 11:48Yeah. Well, McCartney turned it
- 11:50around. I got even credit for that.
- 11:52Mike, thanks for the call. Go ahead.
- 11:54Finish your point. Bye.
- 11:55Bye. Bye.
- 11:55Bye. Yeah.
- 11:58Fascinating stuff. Eck, Huh.
- 12:01I could buy that. I could see that.
- 12:02I could connect those dots. Trent Condon, let's go to
- 12:06Thunder. Joe.
- 12:06Hi, Joe. How are you?
- 12:08Hey, good afternoon. They need to hire Mark Daganol.
- 12:11No, just kidding. Hey, I've got the perfect guy.
- 12:14They need to interview. At least got to get an
- 12:16interview. I've known him since the 7th
- 12:18grade. He's been a winner since Joe
- 12:21Woodley. I like Joe Woodley a lot.
- 12:24I really do. I'm a fan of the Woodley family,
- 12:27a Grandview. What they did there.
- 12:28Obviously the Drake season came to an end, but they didn't miss
- 12:31a beat over on Forest Ave. I'm a big fan, played there,
- 12:36obviously played for McCartney, yeah.
- 12:38Yeah, you got, you got he at least he at least got a merit
- 12:41interview because you look at it, he will keep, I hate to say
- 12:44this. He could come out of value and
- 12:46that money you could take and roll it over into nil.
- 12:48I mean, you can't, you can't give a guy like him $20 million,
- 12:52you know, for a big school like that.
- 12:53But you can start them out a little bit smaller and see what
- 12:56happens for five years. And look, you got money, you got
- 12:59a home, you got a central Iowa pedigree.
- 13:01It'll get the fans excited, hey. And he's one of them.
- 13:04He's one of them. And he's a winner.
- 13:07And we've seen guys that have transitioned from places.
- 13:10Well, we just saw it here in Des Moines, McCallum.
- 13:13Oh, it's not going to work. You can't go from D2 and people
- 13:16say, well, you can't go from non scholarship football to why not?
- 13:19You're a football coach. He's a football coach and he got
- 13:21funds. They played at Iowa State.
- 13:24Lot of things, yeah. Phone call on the list, probably
- 13:27in the list. I hope so.
- 13:28Yeah, I hope so. Or is it a quick car?
- 13:29Here's the other thing. Do they play in their bowl game?
- 13:32They better K State Didn't did didn't K State back.
- 13:35Up. They said they were going to.
- 13:36I don't know if that's official. I hate that.
- 13:39Yeah, I do too. I do.
- 13:40But apparently it was the players that voted not to play
- 13:43in the bowl game. I mean, on Sunday, you find out
- 13:46you're going to Memphis. Let's take a couple a couple
- 13:50more. Here, let me find it.
- 13:52Hello, Chad. How are you?
- 13:54Good. Matt Campbell, you know,
- 13:58conversation, you know, first you got to get him with flowers.
- 14:02You know what he did at Iowa State that, you know, winning,
- 14:07beating Oregon, COVID gear or not, you know, we understand all
- 14:11those things, 8-9 wins, we understand all those things.
- 14:16But at the end of the day, he you're going to a conference
- 14:19that has Ohio State, that has Michigan, it has USC, it has
- 14:24Oregon, and the list can go on and on and on in these in these
- 14:28adjectives that he likes to push out in the media that that that
- 14:32crap's not going to work. No, it's it's more than he just
- 14:34wants to have a close team. What are they?
- 14:36Well. The.
- 14:37Most Together team, yeah, that won't work at them.
- 14:41They want to hear championships. When he went eight or nine games
- 14:45at Iowa State, he's a guy. Well, you win 10 games at Penn
- 14:48State, you get fired, you know, and it's, it's hilarious to me.
- 14:54I, the Big 12 in basketball, it's a phenomenal conference.
- 14:58You look at the Big 12 and you know, people talk about, well,
- 15:03there's no Oregon, I'm sorry, there's no Oklahoma, there's no
- 15:06Texas, there's no Nebraska, there's no Texas A&M, there's no
- 15:09Missouri. This conference is winnable.
- 15:12And to be honest, I think really you put in, Campbell leaves, you
- 15:17grab a coach, I'm sorry, but the Big 12, you throw a name in the
- 15:22hat. Anybody can win this conference
- 15:23in football. So I, you know, I understand
- 15:26what Matt Campbell's doing. Kind of look at Fred Horberg
- 15:28leaving, going to the Bulls. I get it.
- 15:31You want to win at the highest level and I get those things.
- 15:33I'm trying to parallel these two together, but sometimes there
- 15:37has to be a what is good. The situation that you're in and
- 15:42Iowa State with Kimball, again, I can't say enough.
- 15:44You win eight games. Everyone's like it's like a
- 15:46party. I mean, good luck to him.
- 15:49But like, like I said, I think any coach coming to Iowa State,
- 15:52I think Iowa State's going to be fine.
- 15:54You guys have a good day. Yeah, thanks.
- 15:56Appreciate the call. Rob is next.
- 15:58Hi, Rob, How are you? Hey guys, how we doing today
- 16:01doing? Fine, what's on your mind?
- 16:03Good. Hey, I wanted to throw out a
- 16:04name, but I also just listened to that last caller.
- 16:07I kind of want to go the opposite direction.
- 16:08Is he, you know, you look at Matt Campbell over the years,
- 16:13he's had a lot of big wins. It's not like he's Matt Rule at
- 16:16Nebraska, whose name came up in the early stages higher.
- 16:20And I don't know how serious that was if that was just a
- 16:23rumor mill or you know, how Internet gossip is.
- 16:26But what didn't that rule? What's he actually accomplished
- 16:29as a as a coach? He hasn't knocked off the teams.
- 16:31Now, Campbell's teams are always competitive.
- 16:34He's beaten Oklahoma. He struggled a little more
- 16:37against Texas, but he was competitive with Texas.
- 16:40I think it's a great hire. And I'm going to say this, too,
- 16:43I think every Iowa State fan ought to be.
- 16:45You know, it's sad to see him go, no doubt.
- 16:47But when you come in and you take over a program that's down
- 16:51and you can sustain where you go to bowl games year after year.
- 16:55And I realize they had it down year a few years ago, I think,
- 16:59listen, I hope that knocks it out of the park at Penn State.
- 17:03And I don't think he will. You know, the talent level just
- 17:06isn't quite there at Iowa State that it is at some of these
- 17:09bigger schools. But anyway, I'm going to throw
- 17:12out a name to you. What is it, Dan Mullen.
- 17:15Dan Mullen. You know the heck of a job he
- 17:17has. Or to let him go or Yeah, or to
- 17:21let him go. Mississippi State didn't they
- 17:23let him go and he's done a decent job there.
- 17:26So I'm going to throw that out there if it comes to fruition.
- 17:29And then the other name, I was thinking, you already mentioned
- 17:32it, Kenny said. Shield House, I think both those
- 17:35guys got to be on the shortlist. But that's my two cents, guys.
- 17:37Good to hear from you, Rob. Thanks.
- 17:38You have a good weekend. Couple more calls and we got to
- 17:40get a break. We will get to Eugene Repay who
- 17:43covers the program coming up here in about 5 minutes.
- 17:45Jim, welcome to the program. How are you?
- 17:49I'm good. Great.
- 17:49How are you guys today? What's up?
- 17:52Hey, I got a kind of a dark horse name for the Iowa State
- 17:55gig, a guy named Tommy Reese, who's a quarterback coach for
- 17:59the Cleveland Browns. Notre Dame quarterback coach B
- 18:03Kelly is offense coordinator, Bama quarterback coach under
- 18:07Saban. I think he'd be a wonderful
- 18:09young hire for him. Interesting name, I appreciate
- 18:12the call. I didn't.
- 18:13I didn't realize. So he was with Saban.
- 18:15I don't. Remember.
- 18:15He was, yeah. Interesting. 2023.
- 18:18Good stuff. Thanks, Jim.
- 18:19Here's Penn State's for yuks and giggles.
- 18:21Here's their schedule next year. Not without the dates,
- 18:25obviously. Their non con is Marshall Temple
- 18:27in Buffalo. They're at Maryland, at
- 18:30Michigan, at Northwestern home games in Jesus.
- 18:34Go Matt Campbell. Go now.
- 18:36Minnesota, Purdue, Rutgers, USC, Wisconsin, Washington. 9:00 and
- 18:433:00. No Ohio State.
- 18:46No Ohio State, No Oregon, No Oregon.
- 18:48Got to go to Washington. Got to go to Michigan.
- 18:51Marshall, pretty good. Got to go to Temple.
- 18:55Be a lot of Penn State fans there.
- 18:57Jerry is up real quick. Let me put the button there.
- 19:01Hi, Jerry. How are you?
- 19:04Jerry. Yes, Sir, you're on.
- 19:08OK. Hey, I just want to leave Lavar
- 19:11Lewds alone because I'm hoping that Kirk Burns replacement will
- 19:14be him. A lot of people are.
- 19:17And then I just curious what the new recruiting class that was
- 19:21just signed on Wednesday. They can leave, they can leave.
- 19:24That's exactly what what's going to happen there.
- 19:26Yeah. Thanks, Jerry.
- 19:28Appreciate the call. You have the entire roster,
- 19:29Scott. What is it 7 days?
- 19:31I think that. Was 30 day one?
- 19:33Is it 30? One day window.
- 19:34They've got the windows open as soon as he signs on the dotted
- 19:37line. The whole recruiting class,
- 19:38everybody on Iowa State's existing roster.
- 19:41I would think at the top of that list would be Marcus Neal.
- 19:44If I was shopping, yes. You know what?
- 19:46This can sound harsh. Would it be the worst thing if
- 19:51Rocco left? Clean slate, clean slate or
- 19:56Campbell be more interested in I'm not saying.
- 19:58He's going to follow him. Or would he be more interested
- 20:01in bringing Alex Mansky with him?
- 20:03Well, if I'm Campbell, I think I bring Mansky just because of his
- 20:06eligibility, if nothing else. And that's one of the reasons
- 20:09that leads me to my maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing if
- 20:12Roccobeck did leave. Eugene Repay is next.
- 20:15Wish you had more time for more calls.
- 20:17I know the boys in the afternoon are completely clearing their
- 20:21slate from three until or from 2 rather until 5:00 off the bench.
- 20:26Miller and Condon, you're glad you're with us on a Football
- 20:28Fridays the Hours sports radio network.
- 20:32Oh, today's not the day for that song.
- 20:34Trent, this is a happy. Song it is a happy yes yeah get
- 20:38some positive vibes going positive.
- 20:40Think of those great memories, those great wins.
- 20:42Oh, that's the way. OK, All right.
- 20:45I don't believe that the the cyclone nations are going to
- 20:48want to buy. That no.
- 20:49They're not buying what you're selling just yet.
- 20:51It's it's a blow. It's a blow.
- 20:55Yes, it is. Eugene repay.
- 20:56Des Moines Register covers Iowa State Eugene Trenton.
- 20:59Ken, guessing your day got a whole lot busier.
- 21:02I know that the at the register in newspapers as opposed to
- 21:05sports talk where we can say basically anything.
- 21:08You guys have to be very careful with what's going on.
- 21:12What are you hearing? What are you guys?
- 21:14Have you reported anything yet regarding Matt Campbell?
- 21:18Yeah, they're they've definitely met.
- 21:20He's definitely met with Penn State officials.
- 21:23It's obviously nothing, nothing official yet to report either
- 21:28way. But the, the rumor mill is
- 21:29running rampant and we're we're going to wait and see.
- 21:32But obviously it it's been really kicking off and taking
- 21:36off since yesterday. You look at the situation, the
- 21:41financials continue to come up here.
- 21:43He was paid $5,000,000 a year. In today's day and age, that is
- 21:46towards the bottom of the power force structure.
- 21:48We know Iowa State University as a whole, the athletic department
- 21:51much better than it used to be, but still a long ways behind.
- 21:54And certainly even their brethren, the BYU and the Texas
- 21:56Techs and the TCU of the world, the way that they spend.
- 22:00Is there anything that can be done or is this just the new
- 22:02reality of Iowa State? And financially, they're not
- 22:04going to be able to compete, not with just the Penn States and
- 22:07Ohio States and Floridas of the world, but even in their own
- 22:10conference that they're going to lag behind.
- 22:13Yeah, To me, honestly, I don't think that this is much about
- 22:17salary for for Matt Campbell. I don't think it's really about
- 22:19the money. I think it's more so kind of the
- 22:21resources, you know, obviously Penn State, they have a huge
- 22:27alumni slash donor slash, you know, fan base and they they
- 22:32have more financial offerings in terms of resources and NIL and
- 22:36things like that. So that's something that
- 22:39Campbell's going to have to consider.
- 22:40But when I look at, you know, if Campbell's going to leave,
- 22:43whether it's for money, I don't think he would leave for a
- 22:46bigger paycheck. I think it would just be, you
- 22:48know, if there's yeah, if there's alignment, if there's,
- 22:52you know, from top to bottom and, and just kind of that
- 22:55financial support and, and everything that he needs to to
- 22:58build a championship contender. Yeah, and it's the Big 10 after
- 23:01all, at the end of the day, which I would have to think tips
- 23:03the scales as well in Penn State's favour when it comes to
- 23:07that. Well, Eugene, last thing on this
- 23:09because they do want to talk basketball.
- 23:10You saw you were there in person for the players there, a
- 23:13tournament. Want to pick your brain on that?
- 23:15Obviously Purdue Iowa State collide 10 versus 1 tomorrow at
- 23:19Mackie, which is a massive basketball game that's competing
- 23:22completely overshadowed with this Campbell news now and
- 23:25understandably so. But if there is an announcement,
- 23:28Eugene as the register been able to maybe 0 in on when it may
- 23:33happen. Official announcement from Iowa
- 23:35State or from Penn State and who would make the announcement
- 23:37first? Yeah, Travis Hines and Tommy
- 23:40Birch are actually back in the Des Moines area, really here to
- 23:45the ground, really working on it and names and things like that.
- 23:48I'm actually on my way to Purdue.
- 23:49Oh, nice. Right now, yeah.
- 23:52So they they would definitely be better suited in terms of, you
- 23:56know, when and and when to respect some sort of sort of
- 23:59break. Personally, if you ask me, I
- 24:01wouldn't be surprised if it bubbled or if the bubble popped
- 24:04either today or tomorrow. But it feels like sooner than
- 24:07later. Basketball, this team, what they
- 24:13did shooting the basketball, it can't be replicated.
- 24:17It's nothing. To be from earlier in the week,
- 24:20yeah, I mean. Take us, take us inside the
- 24:23building. Because Ken and I, we watched
- 24:24for a while, both of us, but it became such a laugher what it
- 24:28was like inside the building, just one shot after, it didn't
- 24:31matter how ugly the shot was, it hoisted it up.
- 24:33They just were finding the bottom of the net.
- 24:35What it was like being in the building for that onslaught that
- 24:38they gave. Oh man, when when you look at
- 24:41the second-half of the Syracuse game when they were already
- 24:44dialed in, they were shooting over 70% in that game itself.
- 24:47And you thought, OK, you know, that's a great half.
- 24:50No way. You know, you see shooting
- 24:52numbers like that. How can you sustain or replicate
- 24:54that? And now they come in against
- 24:56Alcorn State, drop 132 points, hit another program record 22,
- 25:02three made 3 pointers and it was just absolutely electric, one
- 25:05shot after the other. It might have been the one game
- 25:07where I felt like, you know, usually when you see a blowout
- 25:09or you see a route, the crowd kind of gets a little bored.
- 25:12They they kind of take it for granted.
- 25:14And then, you know, some people leave early.
- 25:15But just with the way that they were shooting the ball, everyone
- 25:17was just on their feet. Every shot that went in was just
- 25:21as exciting as the one that came before it.
- 25:23And Damarian Bateman topped it all off for that final three
- 25:26pointer with less than a minute to go.
- 25:27And that the place went nuts. And you would have thought that
- 25:29it was still, in the first few minutes of the game, just never
- 25:33seen a shooting display like that.
- 25:35And honestly, it doesn't matter who the opponent is.
- 25:37Like to put up those kinds of numbers or that kind of shooting
- 25:40performance. And that was just impressive all
- 25:42around. Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 25:44Well, Purdue tomorrow, obviously a massive test now.
- 25:47I see. I saw that to TJ, I think met
- 25:50with the media this morning by the looks of of Twitter.
- 25:53Correct me if I'm wrong there. Obviously, I know you're on your
- 25:55way to the game tomorrow, but it sounds as though Lipsy is is
- 25:59going to be quote that proverbial game time decision.
- 26:02He is practicing, did practice today and may play tomorrow.
- 26:06What are you hearing on the as far as that storyline, Eugene?
- 26:10Yeah, not only Tim Lipsy, Dominic Nelson too, was also
- 26:13practicing. It feels like those two guys are
- 26:16focal game time decisions. But I wouldn't be surprised if
- 26:19one or both of them play tomorrow just given the
- 26:21magnitude of the matchup. You know, you're playing at
- 26:23Purdue. It's the number one team in the
- 26:25country. You know, it's one thing to sit
- 26:28out for Alcorn State, but it feels like this game is just
- 26:31kind of been circled. So I wouldn't be surprised if I
- 26:34saw Lipsy and Nelson playing just given the magnitude
- 26:37matchup. And then you got Iowa next week.
- 26:39So this is this is a big week for all for them and and for a
- 26:42guy like David Lipsy, I don't know how you keep them off or
- 26:45you know, if anyone can even keep them off.
- 26:47Do you introduce the new football coach?
- 26:49Halftime is Psyhawk next week, huh?
- 26:52Right. We'll see.
- 26:55Oh. Man, that yeah, they could.
- 26:56They could put you in charge of marketing.
- 26:58That would get the people going. That's for sure.
- 26:59Got to have that guy in place by next Thursday to make that
- 27:02happen. If you look at Penn, Purdue and
- 27:06this Purdue squad, obviously they got Braden Smith.
- 27:09He gets all the headlines. But Kaufman Wren is tremendous
- 27:11inside and they got a couple of more big guys, as they do
- 27:14seemingly every single year. It's Oscar Klaf who comes in out
- 27:17of the transfer portal. They get him from South Dakota
- 27:19State, but the other guy, the state.
- 27:21Was after him, right? That's the kid, yeah.
- 27:23Is Daniel Jacobson another over 7 foot guy?
- 27:26He's 7 foot 4. He's playing, you know, 1520
- 27:29minutes a game. They got another one of these.
- 27:31So Iowa State defensively, what do you do to combat that?
- 27:34And foul trouble obviously is going to be a big part of that.
- 27:36Also, do you anticipate we're going to have to see Plato or
- 27:40Mulder, one of those two guys? Maybe both of those guys have to
- 27:43play more minutes just because of the matchup tomorrow.
- 27:46Yeah, that wouldn't shock me at all, especially Dom Plato, just
- 27:49with the way that he's been trending in recent weeks.
- 27:51It seems like TJ Altenberg has been trusting him more and more,
- 27:54and he's been getting more and more medicine.
- 27:56He looks to be more comfortable there.
- 27:57Obviously, Purdue will be a much bigger test than what he's seen
- 28:00against the likes of Syracuse or Alcorn State.
- 28:03But he helped his own a little bit against Saint John's.
- 28:06And I felt like that that was a good front court challenge for
- 28:09Iowa State for them. I feel like the key for this
- 28:12game will be to win on the inside, on both ends defensively
- 28:16and you know, offensively, but also just on the glass.
- 28:19I feel like the rebounding numbers and just the offensive
- 28:22rebounding rate, second chance points that I would say has been
- 28:25able to put up in recent weeks has been under discussed.
- 28:28I mean, obviously a three-point, we'll get the headlines and
- 28:31their ability to generate turnovers and fuel their offense
- 28:34has been big. But I think that this is going
- 28:36to need to be an all hands on deck effort on the glass.
- 28:39And we saw how crucial their rebounding efforts was against
- 28:42beating Saint Johns. And this reminds me of another
- 28:45type of game like that. I mean, produce can be physical.
- 28:47They're going to be tough. Braden Smith, like you
- 28:49mentioned, he's an all American point guard.
- 28:52But that front court is just so loaded and stacked as always.
- 28:55And for our state, it's going to be to set the tone inside and
- 28:58then we'll see how the rest of the chips fall.
- 29:00But I think it's all going to start in the glass and in the
- 29:02paint. Blake Buchanan, stay out of file
- 29:05foul trouble. That's got to be high in the
- 29:07list. Hey, Eugene, thanks for doing
- 29:09this. Appreciate it.
- 29:09Safe trip over there. We'll read your coverage of the
- 29:12game tomorrow at desmoinesregister.com.
- 29:15desmoinesregister.com. You, Travis and Tommy do a
- 29:17terrific job in the sports department as well as the guys
- 29:21on the Hawkeye beat. So thank you.
- 29:22Appreciate you coming on, Eugene.
- 29:24Appreciate you guys and keep refreshing Twitter because who
- 29:27knows when something will come. Yeah, indeed.
- 29:29Thanks pal. Good to talk to you.
- 29:30Talk to you next week Eugene Repay as we check in on Iowa
- 29:33State point spread Trent for Purdue Iowa State tomorrow is
- 29:36it's up at FanDuel and to DraftKings that number is. 6.
- 29:41DraftKings is 5 1/2. Purdue favored 5 1/2.
- 29:45FanDuel 4 1/2. 11:00 tomorrow morning.
- 29:50All right, Tom Caicard on the Hawks next.

- 30:53network. Rochelle Sites is going to see

- 31:11trays for $80. Opposite opposites.
- 31:14Try it one more time, Trent. Up and science go.
- 31:18Up and sense go. What do you use?
- 31:20Up and sense go. Right.
- 31:21That's what you use. Up and sense go.

- 31:28bucks a tray. Check them out at the Facebook

- 31:35You need a stocking stuffer. That's a pretty good idea.
- 31:37In fact, I know what's going in Cindy's stocking.
- 31:39She's used that product before. She has, but not from Doctor
- 31:43Fuller. She paid more.
- 31:44She'll pay well. I will.
- 31:46Let's get to Tom Kegger at hawkeyereport.com.
- 31:49He joins us part of On Three. Boy, busy week for on three,
- 31:52Your Penn State boards blowing up.
- 31:54Seals boards been blowing up as well.
- 31:56Good to talk to you. How are you?
- 31:59Yeah, it's been a every day we get an e-mail about it's it's
- 32:03been a record day for on three really.
- 32:06Yeah, that's been, that's been really good that yeah, I'm the
- 32:10guy Pete Nakos is on fire coaching stuff.
- 32:16So yeah, looks like, looks like we'll have a new face on the
- 32:20opposite sideline for the Seihawk game next year.
- 32:24So Yep, that'll be that'll be interesting.
- 32:27And I don't think I will place Penn State until like 27 or 28,
- 32:32is that right? Wow.
- 32:34Yeah. So, well, we'll see Matt
- 32:36Campbell for a bit. No, sounds like it.
- 32:38Well, you just listened to Ben McCollum.
- 32:40What the what? I guess maybe what was his
- 32:42biggest take away from the Michigan State game, Tom.
- 32:47He felt they got really stagnant on the offensive end of the
- 32:50floor and that really hurt him. And it's like need to move more,
- 32:56need to cut more, need to. Everybody kind of stood and
- 32:59watched. And so that's going to be the
- 33:03big thing for them. I would expect they're going to
- 33:05move much better against Maryland.
- 33:07And the other thing they've got to do is rebound the ball better
- 33:10because Maryland will rebound the ball and there's a lot of
- 33:14teams in the Big 10. They're going to rebound the
- 33:15ball because that's what the Big 10 does.
- 33:17And, and that was one of the big question marks coming into this
- 33:22season, right? And this team rebound with the
- 33:24big boys. And thus far, just based on the
- 33:28one game, again, you're going up against one of the best
- 33:31rebounding teams in the country. So you have to put it in that
- 33:35framework. But they did not pass that test.
- 33:38And now the test of Maryland coming up this weekend, a
- 33:41Maryland team. I'm pretty good this year.
- 33:43Buzz in his first year, Buzz Williams, longtime coach across
- 33:45college basketball, taking over some familiar faces, some
- 33:48transfers from the Big 10 that are on that team.
- 33:51Still there's no must win on December 6th.
- 33:54But it kind of feels like a must win, doesn't it?
- 33:55I mean, they've started O and two so many times in these early
- 33:58Big 10 games. This is a winnable one at
- 34:00Carver. Need to put this one in the win
- 34:02column. Especially when you know, what's
- 34:05coming up on Thursday with the trip dames, because you know,
- 34:09that place is going to be on tilt.
- 34:14You know, they'll they'll be fired up for that, for that
- 34:17game. So that's, you know, I've
- 34:21already kind of put that in the out and we'll see if they, you
- 34:23know, never know. But it's just Iowa State's
- 34:26really good. So they, yeah, this is, you hate
- 34:30to say must win early December, but I think for the fan base to
- 34:36just pay attention to this team, you got to win Saturday because
- 34:40otherwise the fan base is just going to check out on on this
- 34:43team and like, oh, well, OK. So hopefully they get a good
- 34:46crowd. Hopefully the threat of snow on
- 34:49Saturday night doesn't spook people.
- 34:51So we'll see. Yeah, it's supposed to, I guess
- 34:54right around 6:00, but who knows.
- 34:56Although I got to be honest, the weather forecasters are way more
- 34:59accurate than back in the day, right?
- 35:00They seemingly able to pinpoint these things unfortunately, and
- 35:04most times they're right when you want them to be wrong.
- 35:07Well, we'll see where this goes. So Tom, let's let's go to
- 35:10football When the announcement comes out at some point in the
- 35:14you know, the couple of hours following the actual playoff
- 35:17teams being announced, I was going to get their bowl
- 35:20destination rely quest seems like a most logical, but what
- 35:25are a couple of other options? Is Vegas still a possibility or
- 35:29is it seem like Ben you'd be if you'd fall off your chair if
- 35:32they're not in Tampa? I'm kind of in Fallout off the
- 35:37chair if they're not Tampa. I had somebody who's who knows
- 35:41things tell me this week it was about 90 to 95% Tampa just you
- 35:47just can never discount like Vegas, but they can't go to
- 35:51Orlando. Big 10s kind of told them you
- 35:53can't they're not going there again third time and you know
- 35:57what, 4-5 years to Orlando and can't go to can't go to
- 36:03Nashville. So it's, you know, it's one of
- 36:06the two and I think they're probably headed to Iowa.
- 36:10Hasn't been to, you know, it's so weird.
- 36:11Iowa hasn't been to Tampa in seven years, which is crazy to
- 36:14think about, really. It was their home away for home.
- 36:17It felt like seemingly every other year for quite a while and
- 36:20hasn't been the case here lately.
- 36:21Tampa, I know you media guys, you beat reporters.
- 36:24You guys love that place too. Stomp Supper Club and Ibore City
- 36:27and. And Bramble Camps told me some
- 36:29stories as he's been joining me weekly on the Lockdown Hawkeyes
- 36:32podcast. You guys have some stories from
- 36:34Tampa, it sounds like. Oh.
- 36:36My God. The guy at the bar in Media
- 36:38Center. We could ride a Todd and I could
- 36:41write a book on the adventures that we've had in in Tampa.
- 36:46So yeah, it's, it's been a good place.
- 36:49John James, the guy who runs the the hospitality room legend.
- 36:54He is a legend. Yeah, He's he's the best.
- 36:58No, I remember well. Hey, when we look at the bowl
- 37:01game opt outs, it's a huge part of the lexicon.
- 37:03Now when we're talking about bowl games, is there anybody
- 37:06that you think would make sense? I think of Jennings, Dunker's
- 37:10been banged up all year. Both Stevens has been banged up.
- 37:12Both those guys are going to have opportunities at the next
- 37:14level. Cohen Enschriner left the last
- 37:16game with an injury. Short of the injury part,
- 37:19anything else though that would make sense to you guys that
- 37:21potentially opt out? We just lost.
- 37:23I must have been too good of a question.
- 37:25That may stump them, but it's a fair question, Trent, because
- 37:28this is the time of year. Yeah, the the offensive lineman,
- 37:33you're right. They've got a pretty important
- 37:35job interview coming up at some point late February in
- 37:40Indianapolis. One would assume that they will
- 37:41get their opportunity to go. There so we'll.
- 37:44Reconnect with Tom and find out what he thinks or who whom he
- 37:47thinks may be on that list. As far as opt outs, let's get
- 37:51him back in here. Tom Cakert rejoins us.
- 37:53Tom, did you hear the entire question?
- 37:56Just about like potential opt. Out.
- 37:57Yeah, I don't. Really think anybody is going to
- 38:00opt out. I don't.
- 38:01I'd be really surprised if somebody opted out.
- 38:04Just, I think there's, especially along the offensive
- 38:07line, I think those guys want to finish the job.
- 38:10You know, they kind of want to. That's a pretty tight group.
- 38:14And I just don't see like one guy, like I'm done, you know, I
- 38:19just don't see it. Could be, could be wrong, but I
- 38:23just don't see. I know some their agents are
- 38:25probably going to buy some, hey, maybe you should just opt out
- 38:28and not do it. But I just, I don't see that
- 38:31happening with the Iowa team. Guys like Kaden Wegen, for
- 38:34instance, they're not saying he's going to opt out, but
- 38:36usually we hear these guys find somebody and it's normally in
- 38:40the state of Florida to prepare for the draft.
- 38:43Have you heard anything along those lines, Tom?
- 38:46I have not usually ask those guys during the bowl prep.
- 38:50When we get them, we'll probably ask them like, hey, what's your
- 38:53plans after the bowl game? Where you going to go train?
- 38:56And a lot of guys come back to Iowa City.
- 38:58But there's a lot of guys now that used to be kind of, I
- 39:02wouldn't say mandatory, but it was, it was definitely helpful
- 39:06that they would, that they would stay in Iowa City and do all
- 39:09their training. Now a lot of the guys will go
- 39:11for, you know, January and part of February and until I, you
- 39:17know, they have until sometime in March when they have pro day
- 39:23and then they'll come back and then they'll train the rest of
- 39:25the time in Iowa City. But that's, you know, I, it just
- 39:30depends, but that's kind of what a lot of guys are doing these
- 39:32days, especially the guys are going to get drafted.
- 39:36But you know, some of the guys that might not get drafted,
- 39:39they'll just stay in Iowa City and train.
- 39:41Signing day earlier in the week. Our last 30 seconds with you.
- 39:44Tom, your favorite prospect from this class has just signed.
- 39:48Favorite name is Hudson, Parliament.
- 39:51That's awesome, yeah. Yeah, just a great name.
- 39:54I mean, and and he's like, he's like he's both Stevens is who he
- 39:59is. He's just both Stevens.
- 40:01It's just a big mauler sets all kind of weight room records and
- 40:05everything he's going to be. Fun to watch.
- 40:09I'd also the the Jack Janda, the foot 5 kid from £250, that's
- 40:15Logan Lee. He's Logan Lee.
- 40:17He's going to be a deep tackle. Wants to be a deep tackle, so
- 40:20watch him. Good stuff, Tom Caker,
- 40:22hawkeyereport.com, part of On Three Media.
