Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI SCROLL: Trisha Paytas in British Vogue (!!) + Fannita calls out influencer industry for creator pay disparity
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:09through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:16Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:18If you guys are YouTube watchers, you might notice that
- 0:21the studio looks a little bit different.
- 0:23So we are recording Tuesday to Friday.
- 0:26So every day this week, basically interviews for a
- 0:30podcast mini series that we are starting next week.
- 0:35It's called Let the Girls Game and it is going to dive into the
- 0:38history and the experiences and the struggles of women in gaming
- 0:43and streaming. So that will run every
- 0:46Wednesday. Instead of mini scroll, it will
- 0:48replace mini scroll. So the episodes will be like 10
- 0:51to 15 minutes, like mini scroll every Wednesday for the next 5
- 0:55weeks. So because of that, we've had to
- 0:56like redesign the studio so that I could have people with me.
- 1:00Anyways, it's not really that different.
- 1:01So if you do watch on YouTube, I'm sure it's fine, but that is
- 1:05why things look a little different right now.
- 1:07This is my third episode, third podcast episode that I have
- 1:11recorded today alone. My full time job is podcast
- 1:15right now, just like Ken's was beach.
- 1:17Mine is podcast. I'm recording 10 episodes this
- 1:21week. That's just like how it all
- 1:22happened and it all happened really, really quickly.
- 1:25So I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.
- 1:26I'm feeling a bit unwell. I have not been sleeping.
- 1:29You guys know, sleep is like my most important thing, but it's a
- 1:32thing that I struggle with like literally the most when I'm
- 1:34stressed. So I mean, that's probably why
- 1:37it's the most important thing to me.
- 1:38So anyways, I am so tired. I am just like pushing through.
- 1:43But I'm so happy because like the two episodes that I recorded
- 1:46earlier today were like interviews or like bigger
- 1:49episodes with different people. And it's so nice to just be
- 1:51sitting here by myself with you guys just chatting and talking
- 1:56you through the biggest stories on the Internet today.
- 1:58All right, I have two stories for you guys.
- 2:00It was a bit of a light Newsday. I struggled a little bit to find
- 2:03these stories, but the first story that I have for you guys,
- 2:08I feel like this is like my moment, Like I feel like my
- 2:11entire career has led to this. Trisha Paytas was interviewed by
- 2:18British Vogue. Digest that for a minute.
- 2:25I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed.
- 2:27I mean, if you guys listen to this podcast, you know, no
- 2:29matter how problematic Trisha Paytas has been over her career
- 2:33and she has been highly problematic.
- 2:37I have been there. I have been watching her for
- 2:40like 14 years now. I discovered her when I was at
- 2:44university in one of my first years and I was just hooked ever
- 2:48since. And even through her most like
- 2:51tumultuous years and challenging years to be a fan, I stuck it
- 2:55through because I, I truly believe, I feel like this is
- 2:58maybe a hot take. I believe Trisha Paytas is a
- 3:01very good person at her core. I think she's done a lot of very
- 3:03bad things and it has hurt a lot of people.
- 3:06So I am absolutely by no means like, you know, discrediting
- 3:09that. And you know, we did a whole
- 3:11deep dive on her controversies and it was 2 full episodes.
- 3:14I think that was in season three.
- 3:16So I am aware. But at the same time, she is my
- 3:20problematic queen. I have been like a Trisha Paytas
- 3:23apologist for so long and I am just so excited and proud of
- 3:28her. I'm sad this didn't come with
- 3:31like a photo shoot. That would have been so sick.
- 3:34Imagine she got a British Vogue photo shoot.
- 3:36Like I don't even know what they would do with her.
- 3:39I would be dying to see that. But it is an interview.
- 3:42It's very cool. And I think she probably has
- 3:45given birth to Elvis because she is posting drafts on her TikTok
- 3:49and then people are commenting saying like Oh my God, this is a
- 3:51draft. Does that mean Elvis is here and
- 3:52she's liking those comments? I kind of think the next time we
- 3:55will see Trisha will possibly be in like some type of people
- 4:00exclusive announcing Elvis. She's just so like famous and
- 4:07popular right now. And I feel like this is the time
- 4:10for that. Like I think she actually would
- 4:12get that opportunity with this baby this time around.
- 4:15Anyways, that's not really the point of this.
- 4:17So, so excited to see this interview.
- 4:19It is very short. It's like a back and forth
- 4:21transcription. But I wanted to read 3 quotes or
- 4:25like talk about three things in the interview.
- 4:26OK. The 1st is like the quickest
- 4:28little thing ever, but I was just dying.
- 4:29She called herself mother to the Internet.
- 4:31She said I'm mother to the Internet.
- 4:33Love that. I just had to mention that.
- 4:35OK, the next thing, the actual true like story of this and the
- 4:38crux of the article, to be fair, the like pull quote was that she
- 4:43has spent over $12 million in her career making videos and
- 4:50like producing content. So she said I was making really
- 4:53good money from 2015 so I would spend it all on production for
- 4:57movie recreation. I never saved before 2020
- 5:00really. Over the course of ten years
- 5:02I've spent over $12 million. That is so wild, Queen.
- 5:10I mean make good financial decisions.
- 5:12That's going to come up at the bottom.
- 5:13Like, you know, when you post a TikTok and there's any like
- 5:16conversation at all about money and it says like make smart
- 5:18financial decisions or whatever, that is absolutely going to be
- 5:22the warning on this video. OK.
- 5:24She also said in terms of like her music video, because her
- 5:27music career obviously is like the thing that she talks about
- 5:29how she's like the most proud of and she was all self funded.
- 5:32So she says I haven't trolled in over a decade.
- 5:34My favorite songs are Freaky and I love You Jesus.
- 5:36As in her favorite songs that she released.
- 5:38I love freaky. I also love I love You Jesus
- 5:40because it's like funny. I genuinely want to become a pop
- 5:44star and I hope that I get signed on Broadway every time I
- 5:47share a video. I spend upwards of half,
- 5:49$1,000,000 a year on costumes and wigs for these.
- 5:52So it's a really expensive passion.
- 5:54I think there is a very high possibility that after
- 5:57especially saying like every time I share a video like this,
- 6:00I hope I get signed to Broadway. Being in British Vogue and
- 6:04saying that, putting that out into the world, I think there's
- 6:06a high possibility that Trisha will get asked to play a part on
- 6:10Broadway. Imagine her as Roxy Hart.
- 6:12They always let celebrities be Roxy Hart and even Internet
- 6:15celebrities, like she deserves it.
- 6:17That would be so incredibly important to me.
- 6:19If Trisha Paytas went on Broadway, I would immediately
- 6:23book tickets and it would be a business expense because I would
- 6:27have to, I'd have to be there, I'd be vlogging, I'd be
- 6:30podcasting. That would be freaking iconic.
- 6:33Please, please, anybody that has any connections to Broadway, you
- 6:38need to send this podcast to them, this interview to them and
- 6:43you need to get her on Broadway. Give her some time to recover
- 6:47from giving birth. But then Broadway, OK, the next
- 6:51story that I have for you guys. So this story I actually had a
- 6:55hard time like piercing together and I'll explain why and I'll
- 6:59explain kind of like the take or the the way that I'm going to
- 7:02cover it here. But basically, creator Fanita
- 7:05has called out the influencer industry for paying white
- 7:08creators like Alex Earle more than black creators.
- 7:11So the reason why I've had a hard time piercing this together
- 7:13is because I think she's been deleting a lot of videos.
- 7:17And the commentary about this doesn't have a very clear cut.
- 7:21Like here's what happened. And I think it's because it's
- 7:23been like, happening over the course of possibly a few weeks,
- 7:28at least the last like couple of days.
- 7:29So I don't have the full picture for you guys and I'm not like
- 7:32totally qualified to speak on this, but I wanted to talk about
- 7:34a couple things that I have seen from this whole situation that I
- 7:39feel like I can speak on and that, you know, are not kind of
- 7:42like out of place for me to speak on.
- 7:44So, you know, Finita, she makes commentary content.
- 7:47She makes comedy content. Like she's a larger than life
- 7:49personality. And she has been talking a lot
- 7:53about the pay disparity between black creators and white
- 7:56creators on TikTok. And she recently, I guess,
- 7:58brought up Alex Earl again, I think this video was deleted.
- 8:01I did see like a quick clip of it, like a stitch at the
- 8:05beginning of a video where she like mentions Alex Earl.
- 8:08And what has happened is a lot of people have kind of gone in
- 8:12and like called her out for bringing up Alex Earl.
- 8:15Because I guess they're saying like the reason why, you know,
- 8:19she is making more money is because she's a lifestyle
- 8:22influencer. And it's more of a risk for
- 8:24brands to work with comedy or commentary influencers or
- 8:28creators as opposed to lifestyle ones, which, you know, I guess
- 8:31makes sense, especially as a lifestyle influencer.
- 8:33I guess you can, you know, say like this is what I'm wearing
- 8:36today. This is a makeup I'm using.
- 8:37Like it's so easy for brands to like a slot their content in or
- 8:40their products in and it's easy for them to work with, I guess
- 8:44lifestyle creators. I'm not a lifestyle creator.
- 8:46So like, I don't know, I'm obviously commentary if you're
- 8:48thinking about the bigger brand picture, but you know, it's
- 8:51easier for them as well because there's much less of a risk that
- 8:54they will say anything controversial or whatever.
- 8:57So that's like one side of it. The other side of it though, is
- 9:00that regardless of, you know, maybe the false conflation
- 9:04between herself and Alex Earl, she's making very valid points
- 9:08about the pay disparity between white creators and non white
- 9:11creators. So I have a stat here, and I
- 9:14actually think this is one of the most recently published
- 9:17stats in terms of like publicly available stats.
- 9:21I'm sure there's other stuff in academic journals that you have
- 9:24to, you know, subscribe to or pay for.
- 9:26But as far as I could find in December 2021, so again, that's
- 9:30three years ago now, influencer education platform at the
- 9:34Influencer League and PR agency MSLUS released a study that
- 9:39found that black creators on average made 35% less than white
- 9:44creators. And again, this is kind of an
- 9:47old stat. I would be surprised, to be fair
- 9:50though, if this got any better. I think there's always the
- 9:55belief, I suppose, that, you know, things keep progressing
- 9:59and we keep getting better as the years go on with anything,
- 10:03but especially related to, you know, progress like this.
- 10:07And I would be really surprised if that was the case.
- 10:10Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of faith in the industry in
- 10:16general. So I think that's kind of the
- 10:18first piece of the story that I wanted to touch on is that the
- 10:22points that she's making are really valid when it comes to
- 10:25that. The other thing that I wanted to
- 10:28touch on is how her community is calling her in.
- 10:33I would say, I mean, some people are definitely calling her out,
- 10:37but I would say if you think about the like recent examples
- 10:42of creators who have kind of spiraled like this and we've
- 10:45seen it many times. The example that comes to mind
- 10:48for me is Gabby Hanna, because that was only about a year ago.
- 10:51And Gabby's in my opinion was much more extreme or it ended up
- 10:55being much more extreme than what is currently going on with
- 10:57Fenita. I watched this video of Fenita
- 11:00and it was like really emotional and sad and she's deleted it,
- 11:03but it was a re upload and somebody like re uploaded it.
- 11:06And it was her talking about, I guess why she's posting the way
- 11:10she's posting recently and acting the way she's acting
- 11:13online. And she talks about so many
- 11:15different things going on in her life and how difficult the last
- 11:18few months have been for her. And she's had major weight loss
- 11:21surgery. She's in, you know, pain from
- 11:23that. Her uncle passed away.
- 11:25She lost a really big romantic relationship in her life.
- 11:28Like there's just been a lot going on.
- 11:30And again, I don't follow her close enough to really like
- 11:33comment on any of that, but I just feel like her opening up
- 11:37like that and then seeing how people, I guess her community,
- 11:41her followers are talking about what is going on.
- 11:44I see it as much more productive than I think how we treated like
- 11:50Gabby Hanna, for example. I think when Gabby Hanna was
- 11:53going through everything she went through on TikTok last
- 11:55year, I know it got really extreme, but before it kind of
- 11:58ended up in people like calling for Wellness checks and stuff.
- 12:01Even before then, there was a lot of people like making fun of
- 12:05her. And it's been really interesting
- 12:08the contrast for me to look at how people are talking about
- 12:11Fanita because it's not that they're not being critical of
- 12:15her actions, but they're doing so in a very respectful way.
- 12:21I would say even in a video that is saying like, you know, she's
- 12:25wrong for XYZ and these videos and what she's saying is not OK.
- 12:29And whatever, it's always done in such a respectful way.
- 12:32It's done in a way that is almost like analyzing what could
- 12:37be going on with her based on I guess her life and what we know
- 12:41of her and her recent experiences with weight loss
- 12:44surgery and all this stuff. It's been very interesting to
- 12:47see the contrast and I think it's a very positive change.
- 12:51But no matter what creator is kind of going through something
- 12:53like this, when a creator is going through something like
- 12:55this, I think we always just need to remember.
- 12:58And I think Finita's fan base has done this well.
- 13:01You know, you're putting yourself online for millions of
- 13:03people to consume basically your life, your thoughts, what's
- 13:07going on with you. And that at some point would
- 13:11drive most people insane. And I don't mean insane forever,
- 13:16and I don't mean insane in a derogatory term, but I just mean
- 13:20I think the level of fame, the rate that people become intranet
- 13:24famous these days, it's unprecedented.
- 13:27It's nothing like before, you know, you blow up overnight.
- 13:31How do you handle this? How you're we're not supposed to
- 13:34hear constant criticism from people all the time.
- 13:38Like we're not supposed to know what millions of people think
- 13:40about us. That would be a very difficult
- 13:42experience for anyone. And I think, you know, we see
- 13:46celebrities and influencers reach a breaking point.
- 13:50I wouldn't say frequently, but like, we don't see it.
- 13:53It's not uncommon for it to happen.
- 13:56I mean, OK, I would argue that we have seen Taylor Swift reach
- 14:00a breaking point with tortured Poets department.
- 14:02I love that album. But like half of that album is
- 14:04her calling out her fans and the media for talking about her and
- 14:08judging her. And there are a few songs in
- 14:10there where it's like, oh, OK, you are not OK.
- 14:14You know, you're like in a bit of an unwell era right now.
- 14:18So I think everybody expresses it a little bit differently.
- 14:20Again, I don't know enough about Finita to speak on kind of what
- 14:24she is going through like specifically.
- 14:26But I think when we look at creators who are in crisis and
- 14:30who who are posting this all the time online, like that's all
- 14:33they know. So they're going to post what
- 14:35they're thinking and feeling online and they're going to get
- 14:38defensive and it's going to be a difficult thing to watch.
- 14:41And I do think Finita's fan base, from what I have seen, at
- 14:45least for the most part, people being like quite respectful and
- 14:48trying to, I guess, add their two cents on why they think this
- 14:52is happening as opposed to just like making fun of her or being
- 14:56really hyper critical of her, which is nice to see.
- 15:00Anyways, I don't know if that's like really a story because I
- 15:02don't have the full picture of what's going on.
- 15:04I found it very difficult to find and I didn't feel like a
- 15:07lot of what's happening was like respectful or right of me to
- 15:10speak on. And that's all I have for you
- 15:13guys today. I'm sorry if this was such a
- 15:15random episode, but I will be back with you guys tomorrow, of
- 15:18course. And I'm sure there will be more
- 15:21stories, more tea going on. But thank you so much for
- 15:23listening to Mini Scroll. I love you guys so much.
- 15:26Please rate, review and subscribe.
- 15:27I've actually gotten so many nice reviews.
- 15:30I haven't read them yet on the big episodes.
- 15:31I'll read them I think this Friday, so it'll go up next
- 15:34Friday. But anyways, thank you guys so
- 15:36much for listening to Mini Scroll.
- 15:37I love you guys and I'll talk to you tomorrow.
- 15:39Bye.
