Speaker 1: Breaking news this morning, a brand new CNN poll out
• 0:03
Speaker 1: just minutes ago on the eve of key off year
• 0:06
Speaker 1: elections with US now as seen as Washington Bureau Chief
• 0:09
Speaker 1: and political director David Challion deech, how we got big
• 0:12
Speaker 1: numbers here on the president's approval rating, which I guess
• 0:16
Speaker 1: really is upside down at historic levels.
• 0:19
Speaker 2: It is John And just consider this brand new CNN
• 0:22
Speaker 2: poll sort of a mood ring, if you will, as
• 0:24
Speaker 2: we head into election day tomorrow and that we're one
• 0:26
Speaker 2: year away from the midterms. That approval rating for the
• 0:29
Speaker 2: president is at a low point of his second term.
• 0:33
Speaker 2: Thirty seven percent of Americans in our poll approve of
• 0:36
Speaker 2: the job Trump is doing. Sixty three percent disapproved. Take
• 0:40
Speaker 2: a look at his approval in this term over time.
• 0:43
Speaker 2: You see here he was up hovering near fifty percent
• 0:47
Speaker 2: in his honeymoon after the inauguration, and it is about
• 0:50
Speaker 2: going down pretty steadily since now at thirty seven percent.
• 0:54
Speaker 2: And also just to give a sense here of how
• 0:55
Speaker 2: Americans are reacting to what he's doing, Trump has gone
• 0:59
Speaker 2: too far when it comes to using presidential power. Sixty
• 1:02
Speaker 2: one percent of our poll respondents say that is true.
• 1:05
  Speaker 1: Trump has gone.
• 1:06
Speaker 2: Too far, deporting undocumented immigrants, Fifty seven percent say that
• 1:11
Speaker 2: is true. That's up from February. In fact, this question
• 1:13
Speaker 2: nor O'Donnell asked him on sixty minutes last night. He
• 1:15
Speaker 2: said the exact opposite. He thinks it doesn't go far enough.
• 1:18
Speaker 2: The American people disagree. According to our new poll.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: You said, use this poll as a kind of mood ring.
• 1:24
Speaker 1: What is the ring telling you about the mood elsewhere?
• 1:27
Speaker 2: Well, we sort of do that directional. How are things
• 1:30
Speaker 2: going in the country? Only thirty two percent of Americans
• 1:33
Speaker 2: john say they're going well, sixty eight percent say going badly.
• 1:36
  Speaker 2: What's driving that?
• 1:37
  Speaker 3: Well?
• 1:37
Speaker 2: What is top of mind for Americans? The economy and
• 1:41
Speaker 2: cost of living far and away, forty seven percent of
• 1:44
Speaker 2: Americans say it's the most important issue facing the US.
• 1:47
Speaker 2: Then the state of democracy at twenty six percent, Immigration,
• 1:50
Speaker 2: crime and safety a little lower down. So, given that
• 1:54
Speaker 2: the economy is so hugely important to Americans, what do
• 1:57
Speaker 2: they think of Trump's policies affecting the US economy? Sixty
• 2:01
Speaker 2: one percent of Americans to this pole say that he
• 2:04
Speaker 2: has his policies have worsened the US economic conditions. Only
• 2:08
Speaker 2: twenty seven percent say they have improved them.
• 2:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, those of the numbers that really jumped out to
• 2:13
Speaker 1: be when you said, have people telling you the economy
• 2:16
Speaker 1: is the most important thing. Yet Donald Trump, the president,
• 2:18
Speaker 1: is not helping in that area. That gives you a
• 2:21
Speaker 1: sense of why his disapproval rating might be so high. So, Dave,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: we've done elections tomorrow. Let's not talk about those. Let's
• 2:26
Speaker 1: talk about the ones a year from tomorrow.
• 2:31
Speaker 2: Yes, well, the elections tomorrow will be interesting too, But
• 2:33
Speaker 2: you're right, we did take our first look a year
• 2:36
Speaker 2: out at that generic congressional ballot. You know, would you
• 2:40
Speaker 2: vote for the Democrat or the Republican in the battle
• 2:42
Speaker 2: for Congress? Forty seven percent say they would vote for
• 2:45
Speaker 2: the Democrat, forty two percent the Republican. This democratic advantage,
• 2:50
Speaker 2: it is an advantage, but it's not nearly as large
• 2:52
Speaker 2: of an advantage Democrats had eight years ago. Coming to
• 2:55
Speaker 2: the end of Donald Trump's first year in office in
• 2:58
Speaker 2: twenty seventeen, that up, they're huge midterm victories in twenty eighteen. However,
• 3:03
Speaker 2: we do see that Democrats are far more motivated to
• 3:06
Speaker 2: vote than are Republicans. If you look here, those that
• 3:09
Speaker 2: tell us they're extremely motivated to vote in the midterms
• 3:13
Speaker 2: Democrats and Democratic leaning independents, sixty seven percent say they're
• 3:17
Speaker 2: extremely motivated. That compares to forty six percent of Republican
• 3:20
Speaker 2: and Republican leaning independence. But John the Democratic Party brand
• 3:24
Speaker 2: is still a problem for the party. Look at this,
• 3:28
Speaker 2: their favorable rating is at twenty nine percent. Now the
• 3:31
Speaker 2: Republican favorable rating is not that much better thirty three percent,
• 3:34
Speaker 2: but still a tick better. Fifty five percent of Americans
• 3:38
Speaker 2: have an unfavorable view. A majority of Americans have an
• 3:41
Speaker 2: unfavorable view of the Democratic Party. Now, this is a
• 3:44
Speaker 2: lot of Democrats that are feeding that they're sort of
• 3:46
Speaker 2: hating on their own party. We'll see if they succeed
• 3:49
Speaker 2: tomorrow night, if Donald Trump's numbers continue to go down,
• 3:52
Speaker 2: if that'll turn their fortunes around. But this does not
• 3:55
Speaker 2: look exactly like that twenty eighteen huge midterm sweep. The
• 3:59
Speaker 2: Democrats still have some work to do to take advantage
• 4:02
Speaker 2: of Donald Trump's unpopularity with the American people.
• 4:04
Speaker 1: Yeah, Democrats want to push that number higher to be sure.
• 4:06
Speaker 1: In terms of the generic ballot, we'll get some new
• 4:08
Speaker 1: data points tomorrow when actual voters go to actual polls.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: We will be talking to you extensively I'm sure the
• 4:14
Speaker 1: next four eight hours. David Challing, great to see you,
• 4:15
  Speaker 1: thanks so much.
• 4:16
Speaker 4: Joining me now in the group chat. Francesca Chambers, White
• 4:19
Speaker 4: House correspondent for USA Today, Stephen Collinson, CNN Politics senior reporter,
• 4:24
Speaker 4: and Sarah Fisher CNN Senior media analysts and senior media
• 4:28
Speaker 4: reporter at Axios. I want to start with his approval
• 4:32
Speaker 4: rating among independents throughout the years and without this year.
• 4:37
Speaker 4: So in mid February he was at forty three percent.
• 4:40
Speaker 4: Now he's down to twenty eight percent. That's a fifteen
• 4:43
Speaker 4: point drop. And I always like to point out independence, specifically.
• 4:47
Speaker 5: My independence will be key as we head to the
• 4:50
  Speaker 5: midterm elections.
• 4:51
Speaker 4: But but does the White House think their key, Like
• 4:53
Speaker 4: how do they look at the electorate and what where
• 4:55
Speaker 4: do they think are here? Is apresident?
• 4:57
Speaker 5: He thinks that he's doing well. I mean, he just
• 4:58
Speaker 5: said that himself. But with respect to his approval rating,
• 5:01
Speaker 5: it wasn't just the CNN poll. There was an ABC
• 5:05
Speaker 5: News Washington Post IPSOS poll that had roughly similar findings
• 5:08
Speaker 5: about his disapproval rating amongst six and ten Americans too,
• 5:11
Speaker 5: And so when it isn't one poll, you can't say
• 5:13
Speaker 5: that that's an outlier. It's it's multiple polls at this
• 5:16
Speaker 5: point that are showing that. Obviously, they still have a
• 5:18
Speaker 5: year until those midterm elections and so much can happen
• 5:22
Speaker 5: between now and then. But I think the generic ballot
• 5:25
Speaker 5: test over the weekend also was showing an edge for Democrats.
• 5:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, Unfortunately Democrats don't have generic Democrats right like it
• 5:32
Speaker 4: was a more complicated so can they Are they able
• 5:36
Speaker 4: to take advantage of this in elections as we look
• 5:39
  Speaker 4: ahead this week?
• 5:40
  Speaker 5: Yeah?
• 5:40
Speaker 3: I think that's what the elections this week are about.
• 5:43
Speaker 3: They clearly have an opening. The present appears to be
• 5:45
Speaker 3: getting into the kind of territory that's generally very dangerous
• 5:50
Speaker 3: for a present looking forward to the midterm elections, but
• 5:54
Speaker 3: the question is do Democrats have a message that can
• 5:56
Speaker 3: exploit that is the country willing to give them a hearing.
• 6:00
Speaker 3: You've seen in Virginia and New Jersey, the Gabnatoria racist Democrats.
• 6:04
Speaker 3: They're seeking to address the affordability issues, which of course
• 6:09
Speaker 3: their nominee in the last election didn't really wasn't really
• 6:14
  Speaker 3: able to answer.
• 6:15
Speaker 4: So there's starting still an issue we're looking now. Voters
• 6:17
Speaker 4: believe the most important issue facing the country economy, cost
• 6:20
Speaker 4: of living is still first.
• 6:22
Speaker 3: Because numbers are bad on that issue.
• 6:24
Speaker 6: Yeah, Perc this is the problems that Democrats faces. If
• 6:29
Speaker 6: you take a look at twenty eighteen, the numbers that
• 6:31
Speaker 6: they were pulling ahead were so much more drastic than
• 6:34
Speaker 6: they are now. So head of the twenty eighteen interm
• 6:37
Speaker 6: where Democrats sweat, it was very obvious that they were
• 6:40
Speaker 6: going to sweep. They have a slight edge now, but
• 6:42
Speaker 6: it's nothing like what we saw eight years ago.
• 6:44
Speaker 4: Can I ask you, Sarah, what was interesting about this
• 6:46
Speaker 4: being an interview sixty minutes. CBS under its new leadership,
• 6:52
Speaker 4: different anchor maybe than people are used to seeing at
• 6:54
Speaker 4: that time slot. The venue here matters a lot.
• 6:57
Speaker 6: So the context here is that CBS is parent company Paramount,
• 7:01
Speaker 6: merged with a company called sky Dance Media after they
• 7:04
Speaker 6: essentially made concessions to the Trump administration. He actually commented
• 7:08
Speaker 6: on that in the interview, saying that he liked the
• 7:10
Speaker 6: new leadership. They brought in a woman named Barry Weiss
• 7:12
Speaker 6: to be the editor in chief of CBS, and he
• 7:15
Speaker 6: was lauding and praising them. And the message that that sends,
• 7:18
Speaker 6: Audie is if you are a business person and you
• 7:20
Speaker 6: want to get a deal done. You want to get
• 7:21
Speaker 6: a transaction done, do it in a way that Curry's
• 7:24
Speaker 6: favor with the Trump administration, and you're more likely to
• 7:26
Speaker 6: get your deal blessed. It was very, very telling that
• 7:29
Speaker 6: Donald Trump addressed that head on on the same network,
• 7:31
Speaker 6: by the way, that he sued for twenty billion dollars.
• 7:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, which he said, I didn't want to embarrass you
• 7:36
Speaker 4: by bringing that up. I think they had that in
• 7:38
Speaker 4: the off air transcript. I mean, but it also showed
• 7:40
Speaker 4: he sense he was sitting down with a friendly news organization.
• 7:44
Speaker 4: That was the challenge. Yes, that he seemed to convey,
• 7:46
Speaker 4: not them, but him.
• 7:47
Speaker 6: He thinks it's friendly because of all these concessions that
• 7:49
Speaker 6: have been made. Look Stephen Colbert getting pulled off the air.
• 7:52
Speaker 6: They say it was for financial reasons.
• 7:53
  Speaker 4: Let's be real.
• 7:54
Speaker 6: That show was announced canceled right after the new chairman
• 7:58
Speaker 6: of that network met with the SEC regulatory approval of
• 8:01
Speaker 6: his deal. You had so many instances where sixty minutes
• 8:05
Speaker 6: employees came out and said, like, we felt like this
• 8:07
Speaker 6: program is not what it was in terms of editorial independence. Clearly,
• 8:11
Speaker 6: all that is sending a signal to the White House
• 8:14
Speaker 6: that This is not the institution that it was. It's
• 8:16
Speaker 6: more friendly to you.
