- 0:00Speaker 1: There's another rock star who has exclaimed over the weekend,
- 0:03Speaker 1: it's my son that I never knew I had. Well,
- 0:07Speaker 1: I knew I had, but.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Have you ever done one of those DNA tests? And
- 0:11Speaker 2: I don't mean like in an unfortunate interrogation situation with
- 0:15Speaker 2: the Homicide Squad. I mean, you know, like the 23andMe
- 0:19Speaker 2: or the whatever, you spit in a tube and you
- 0:22Speaker 2: find out, you know, what you're.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I've thought about it, but no.
- 0:26Speaker 2: This St. Louis man, Michael Gosling, did. He always knew
- 0:29Speaker 2: he was adopted, but he'd wondered about his roots. It
- 0:32Speaker 2: turns out he's got blues and roots.
- 0:34Speaker 1: He's got rock and roll roots.
- 0:37Speaker 2: An unknown half-brother did the 23andMe test, and that's when
- 0:40Speaker 2: they discovered the family connection.
- 0:43Speaker 1: To a man by the name of Michael McDonald, who
- 0:48Speaker 1: you might not know the name, but he was the
- 0:50Speaker 1: lead singer of the Doobie Brothers for many years. He
- 0:53Speaker 1: was in Steely Dan. He's the voice that you heard
- 0:56Speaker 1: on every second record in the late 70s and early 80s.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Christopher Cross's Ride Like the Wind.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02Speaker 1: There was a time when musicians would say to their producer,
- 1:05Speaker 1: you know, the record just needs a little something at
- 1:07Speaker 1: the end there. And you go, oh, I'll get Michael
- 1:09Speaker 1: McDonald in.
- 1:09Speaker 2: It needs a little Michael McDonald.
- 1:10Speaker 1: He was in everything.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Well- Yes, indeed he was. He got going early. Mike
- 1:14Speaker 2: McDonald and this guy Michael's biological mum were 14 when
- 1:21Speaker 2: Gosling was conceived.
- 1:22Speaker 3: 14!
- 1:23Speaker 1: He was living the rock and roll lifestyle before he
- 1:26Speaker 1: was a rock and roller.
- 1:27Speaker 2: He certainly was. But Michael Gosling thrilled to bits to
- 1:30Speaker 2: find out about his dad. And this is him talking
- 1:34Speaker 2: about his first interaction with Doobie Dad.
- 1:37Speaker 3: And I said, so tell me about yourself.
- 1:39Speaker 1: What do you do? He said, well, I'm a musician.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And he went on to tell me that, in fact,
- 1:43Speaker 1: looks like we'll be touring this summer and we'll be
- 1:45Speaker 1: stopping in St. Louis.
- 1:46Speaker 4: And then I.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Finally said, are you Michael McDonald?
- 1:50Speaker 2: And he said, yeah, I'm afraid so. And dad's pretty thrilled, too,
- 1:56Speaker 2: thrilled to reconnect.
- 1:57Speaker 3: It was a wonderful, wonderful experience to see Michael and
- 2:02Speaker 3: me to get to meet my son, you know, after
- 2:04Speaker 3: all these years, you know, thinking about him.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, because if you see a picture of Michael Gosling,
- 2:10Speaker 1: Michael McDonald would have looked at him and gone, there
- 2:13Speaker 1: ain't no way I'm wriggling out of this. And Michael
- 2:17Speaker 1: Gosling said, Dad, you might want to make an adjustment
- 2:20Speaker 1: to that will. Because it's just a spitting image of
- 2:25Speaker 1: his old man. So there you go. So I don't know.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Surprise! Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Love the Doobie Brothers.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Freddie Bonica used to tell a great story about how
- 2:35Speaker 4: the Doobie Brothers had a, they had a, for touring,
- 2:39Speaker 4: they had a private plane called the Doobie Liner.
- 2:41Speaker 1: As bands did when they were that big back then.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. They had the Doobie Liner and their crew
- 2:45Speaker 2: used to fly on another one called the Crewbie Liner.
