Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Bringing The Heat With JEREMY SOSVILLE From SANHEDRIN
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name is Jeremy Sosville. I'm the guitar player and
- 0:03Speaker 1: backing vocals for San Hedrin. On March fourteenth, we got
- 0:07Speaker 1: an album called Heat Lightning coming out on Metal Blade Records,
- 0:10Speaker 1: which is available for pre order.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Got a single up called blind Wolf. You can watch
- 0:16Speaker 1: the video on the Metal Blade YouTube. Got a second
- 0:19Speaker 1: single drop in in about twelve hours from the time
- 0:23Speaker 1: we're taping this, and yeah, we're pretty excited.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Fantastic brother, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Thanks for having me.
- 0:32Speaker 4: As you mentioned, San Hendrin release your new album, Heat
- 0:34Speaker 4: Lightning on March the fourteenth, So how are you feeling
- 0:37Speaker 4: about it?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Pretty excited. It's been a long time coming. When you
- 0:43Speaker 1: consider the early moments of writing the first songs, demoing
- 0:48Speaker 1: the record, writing the record recording, getting the artwork together,
- 0:53Speaker 1: the layout, you know, the step by step by step,
- 0:56Speaker 1: it's pretty unreal that in just a few weeks the
- 0:59Speaker 1: record will be unleashed to the world and we'll start
- 1:02Speaker 1: the next phase, which is putting ourselves in front of people.
- 1:06Speaker 4: You actually mentioned a good point there, like these days
- 1:08Speaker 4: had so many steps to releasing an album, Like I'm
- 1:11Speaker 4: about the ten years ago you'd record it, you'd set
- 1:14Speaker 4: a DT, you released a few singles and that was it.
- 1:16Speaker 3: But these guys, you just got to go through so
- 1:18Speaker 3: many hoops.
- 1:19Speaker 4: So I guess before you release it, does it does
- 1:21Speaker 4: it get monotonous?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a there's a lot of work that goes
- 1:30Speaker 1: into it, uh that you don't necessarily fantasize about when
- 1:36Speaker 1: you're first picking up that guitar, bass or drums as
- 1:39Speaker 1: a kid and they're like, I'm gonna be a rock
- 1:41Speaker 1: star someday. You have to learn a lot of skills
- 1:45Speaker 1: outside of just you know, writing your songs and playing
- 1:48Speaker 1: your instrument and all that stuff in order to take
- 1:52Speaker 1: advantage of the opportunities that that act of making the
- 1:57Speaker 1: music in the first place may present itself to you.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So yeah, there's a constant learning curve. The technology and
- 2:05Speaker 1: the trends of how people receive their music is constantly changing,
- 2:09Speaker 1: as you know, as we've seen through the decades, and
- 2:12Speaker 1: so you just kind of have to adapt or die.
- 2:17Speaker 4: So tell us bit more about Hate Lightning from a
- 2:20Speaker 4: must point of view, and what do you were gone
- 2:21Speaker 4: forward with the album.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It's hard to say what we're I don't know if
- 2:26Speaker 1: we're consciously going for anything. Every album we make sort
- 2:29Speaker 1: of just sort of comes together pretty organically. The first
- 2:35Speaker 1: two songs we wrote were the title track, Heat Lightning
- 2:38Speaker 1: and High Threshold for Pain, which are two very different
- 2:42Speaker 1: songs with very different kind of influences, so to speak,
- 2:46Speaker 1: And so we decided from there we have to make
- 2:49Speaker 1: the rest of the songs we write for this record
- 2:52Speaker 1: make enough sense and have enough connective tissue that those
- 2:56Speaker 1: two songs can live on the same record and have
- 2:58Speaker 1: it make sense.
- 2:59Speaker 2: So I think we did that. I think.
- 3:03Speaker 1: The recording quality, the sonic quality of the album is
- 3:06Speaker 1: our punchiest and clearest yet. So I think we accomplished
- 3:10Speaker 1: a lot of things we've been trying to accomplish with
- 3:13Speaker 1: previous records, but maybe we're coming up short in different ways.
- 3:17Speaker 1: We got a lot of those accomplished this time around.
- 3:19Speaker 1: So it's a very complete representation of our band at
- 3:22Speaker 1: this time.
- 3:24Speaker 3: A son you mentioned a single broad Wolf's released recently.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Is that a good sonic correct presentation of what to expect?
- 3:30Speaker 3: Is it just off of one layer?
- 3:32Speaker 1: Uh, it's kind of an initial layer. So that's the
- 3:36Speaker 1: first song on the record as well. It's kind of
- 3:38Speaker 1: an introduction to the experience ahead if you're sitting down
- 3:42Speaker 1: and dropping the needle and sitting back for the journey.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And we thought, you know, with every first single of
- 3:50Speaker 1: every record we've done, were really thinking about the people
- 3:54Speaker 1: who've never heard us before, and how can we bring
- 3:57Speaker 1: them into what we're about, get them.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Cure us to hear more.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And so some a song like that that's quite catchy,
- 4:04Speaker 1: quite straightforward, but still represent rent new, representative of what
- 4:11Speaker 1: we're about as a whole as a band, was kind
- 4:16Speaker 1: of what we were going for by having that song
- 4:18Speaker 1: come out first.
- 4:20Speaker 4: And Heat Lightning follows on from the critically acclaimed twenty
- 4:23Speaker 4: twenty two album lights On, And so how's it different
- 4:26Speaker 4: in respects to that album.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Well, the pandemic's not happening anymore, that's true, you know
- 4:32Speaker 1: that lights On. We were really excited about that album,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and we're all still very proud of it. But I
- 4:39Speaker 1: feel like the world was in such a state of
- 4:41Speaker 1: disarray that it was hard for us and you know,
- 4:45Speaker 1: many other bands as well, to kind of get a
- 4:48Speaker 1: solid footing, a solid plan. It seemed like all of
- 4:51Speaker 1: our business relationships, the companies we deal with, whether it
- 4:54Speaker 1: be the label or our booking agencies and stuff, they
- 4:57Speaker 1: were also scrambling because it was just an un unreal
- 5:00Speaker 1: kind of time, so there's just a lot of chaos
- 5:03Speaker 1: around it. This record seems to have a much more
- 5:07Speaker 1: organized push behind it, which we're very grateful for.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And hopefully people who hear.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Heat Lightning and find out about us do that record,
- 5:17Speaker 1: maybe go back and can check that album out and
- 5:19Speaker 1: our previous two before that, because if you like Heat Lightning,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you're probably gonna like most of our other material because
- 5:26Speaker 1: there are differences in every album. But we're a pretty
- 5:30Speaker 1: consistent band in terms of what we offer our fans.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Now, I mentioned that like like some did get a
- 5:36Speaker 4: great critical reception mate, So as a band, is is
- 5:39Speaker 4: it tempting to rehasher winning formula when something while.
- 5:41Speaker 3: That happens, or is it important to move beyond that.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit of both.
- 5:47Speaker 1: So we're less concerned about critics and more concerned about
- 5:52Speaker 1: our fans. So we've had a pretty loyal fan base
- 5:59Speaker 1: from the jump. Uh, you know, the reason we got
- 6:03Speaker 1: signed was because people discovered us, you know, online and
- 6:06Speaker 1: just we're curious and so we want to stay true
- 6:11Speaker 1: to what brought us our success that we've experienced to date,
- 6:16Speaker 1: But we're also curious people. We're curious musicians, and we
- 6:19Speaker 1: want to take sounds that we've never used before, take
- 6:23Speaker 1: influences we've never used before on every album we do
- 6:26Speaker 1: and bring our fans along for the journey and hopefully
- 6:29Speaker 1: they enjoy it as much.
- 6:31Speaker 2: As we do. And so far, so good.
- 6:34Speaker 4: And you've moved to our U type of Bearsville studio
- 6:37Speaker 4: for Michigan tracking on this album after spending the previous
- 6:41Speaker 4: three albums of play at the same studio. So well,
- 6:44Speaker 4: what effect did that have on the overall polish of
- 6:47Speaker 4: the album?
- 6:47Speaker 1: I guess moving studios, Ah, it's a tremendous effect. For one,
- 6:52Speaker 1: the studio is quite legendary, so when you're in there,
- 6:56Speaker 1: you sort of feel.
- 6:57Speaker 2: The ghosts in the walls of all.
- 7:00Speaker 1: These platinum records that have been done through the decades
- 7:04Speaker 1: in that place. But yeah, it's a totally different atmosphere.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It's more of a what you'd consider to be a
- 7:14Speaker 1: a level recording studio with the big console and all
- 7:19Speaker 1: the fancy microphones and mike preamps and all that stuff.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And then we had two engineers this time that we're
- 7:26Speaker 1: friends to the band, had a very clear understanding of
- 7:29Speaker 1: what we were trying to accomplish, and between the two
- 7:32Speaker 1: of them, they really had the skill set to get
- 7:36Speaker 1: the sounds that were in our brains out through those speakers.
- 7:40Speaker 1: And yeah, I think this record sonically is a little
- 7:45Speaker 1: less warm than the first three records we did with
- 7:49Speaker 1: our previous engineer, Colin, but they're a lot more crisp
- 7:54Speaker 1: and clear and punchy, and it seems to fit the
- 7:58Speaker 1: material on this album very well.
- 8:02Speaker 3: The cover works pretty cool toam.
- 8:04Speaker 4: It's a hand painted piece of work by Johan Prenja,
- 8:08Speaker 4: So tell us about that and how it fits into
- 8:10Speaker 4: the album.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Well, Johan is a big time supporter of the band.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I've known him since before I was in San Heedron
- 8:19Speaker 1: through my old band Black Anvil. And behind me, if
- 8:22Speaker 1: you can see these pictures of Van Halen and Randy Rhoads,
- 8:25Speaker 1: those are paintings he did. Oh well already Yeah, yeah,
- 8:29Speaker 1: So I have four of his paintings at my house
- 8:32Speaker 1: and I had them prior to contacting him about doing
- 8:35Speaker 1: the album cover. So the first three albums we had
- 8:39Speaker 1: the same artists work on those, just like we had
- 8:41Speaker 1: the same tracking engineer and same studio.
- 8:43Speaker 2: So we changed that up too.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So we contacted Johann he was happy to do the
- 8:49Speaker 1: album cover, and then Johan and Erica got together to
- 8:53Speaker 1: discuss some of the lyrical themes that were common throughout
- 8:57Speaker 1: the whole record, and they came to the very striking
- 9:00Speaker 1: image that you see as the album cover.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Very nice.
- 9:06Speaker 4: If you have to sort of loosely describe, you know, music, mate,
- 9:10Speaker 4: like it's basically a traditional metal mixed with hard rock.
- 9:13Speaker 4: But in the creating process, like, how do you.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Go about bringing those together cohesively? Like is it charl
- 9:19Speaker 3: and Arrow?
- 9:20Speaker 4: Do you win more than you lose?
- 9:22Speaker 3: You lose more than you win?
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's just a matter of this is
- 9:28Speaker 1: sort of this is essentially what we sound like when
- 9:32Speaker 1: the three of us put our heads together to write songs.
- 9:36Speaker 1: We have a between the three of us, we have
- 9:38Speaker 1: a lot of common influences, but we also have a
- 9:40Speaker 1: lot of influences that are, you know, unrelated to one another,
- 9:45Speaker 1: and this is sort of the sum of the parts.
- 9:49Speaker 1: We don't set out necessarily to ration the heavy metal
- 9:53Speaker 1: to the hard rock. We just sort of use our
- 9:58Speaker 1: musical background and our abilities to blend everything together to
- 10:04Speaker 1: serve the song. So some songs on this album are
- 10:07Speaker 1: straight up pounds you in the face heavy metal. Other
- 10:11Speaker 1: songs have a lot more of a rock element to it,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and then some are you know, a pretty half and
- 10:18Speaker 1: half combination of both. And it's yeah, it's really not
- 10:21Speaker 1: a conscious thing so much as every song kind of
- 10:26Speaker 1: tells you what it needs as you're writing it.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Ay, now, the album he lighting is Adam monsche forte eight.
- 10:32Speaker 4: So what have you got planned after that? Have you
- 10:33Speaker 4: got a bit of a promotional tua?
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah, we got a few dates in the US. March twentieth,
- 10:40Speaker 1: we're playing the Hell's Heroes Festival in Houston, Texas. We're
- 10:44Speaker 1: going to Tulsa, Oklahoma, about a week and a half
- 10:47Speaker 1: later to play the Bangover Brunch, which is sort of
- 10:51Speaker 1: a post festival show for two minutes to Tulsa Fest.
- 10:55Speaker 1: We'll play in Pittsburgh April twenty six, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with
- 10:59Speaker 1: our friends Lady Beast, and then in May and June
- 11:02Speaker 1: we will get on the big jet airplane and head
- 11:06Speaker 1: to Europe with our friends and Savage Master and do
- 11:08Speaker 1: about three weeks in Europe.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Very nice. Sounds like you got a busy berry and
- 11:13Speaker 3: coming up.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it should be fun. We're looking forward to it.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Fantastic Jeremy, Well, thanks very much for your time that
- 11:19Speaker 3: I made a heat.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Lightning is out mauch fourteenth through Metal Blade Records, so
- 11:23Speaker 4: get yourself a.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Copy pre order now. We'll hook it up as soon
- 11:27Speaker 3: as she comes out.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Absolutely thanks for having me
