Latest / Fostering Faith / What the Sigma?
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. We have special guests here today as we are recording as the
- 0:07new year comes in. And so we thought it would be fun as we are focusing on our new way of
- 0:142025. And so what better way to bring in the holiday and into the new year with friends
- 0:21and how to understand teenagers. Because as teens come and go, I have no idea what they're
- 0:28talking about. And so we have a house full of kids today. And so I grabbed some of them.
- 0:32And we are here with Bella, Gwen, Tilly, and we are going to talk about slang terms. And
- 0:42so as moms and dads and teens out there, how we can communicate effectively as we look
- 0:49into the new year and how we can communicate better because we have no idea what these
- 0:55kids are talking about like tea and Riz and skibbity dee toilet and all the things that
- 1:03don't make no sense. And so as we are growing in our faith, it's important to stay open
- 1:10and have great communication with our teens. And so guys, what have you guys learned for
- 1:17communication skills with your parents? Bella? What have I learned for communication skills?
- 1:25So do you talk slang to your parents? Yes. Do they understand it? Yes. Okay. Most of
- 1:31the time. Is it allowed in your house? Yeah. Okay. What about you, Gwen? Yeah, I talk slang
- 1:38to my parents because my mom honestly just understands it because she's just been around
- 1:42us so much. She just says it too, honestly. But yeah, some things are allowed in our house
- 1:48and some things aren't. Like it depends on how far you take it. Okay. Yeah. Tilly? Yes.
- 1:54My dad talks like it to me too. Talks slang? Yes. Okay. And what does your mom do? She
- 2:00just like, well, my mom and my dad just do it like, just like to be funny and like. What
- 2:06do they do for a living? Are they out? Oh, my mom is a nurse. And then your mom is a?
- 2:13My mom and dad are both high school teachers. So they just, you know. So they're in the
- 2:18loop of it. Yeah. And your dad is a? A police officer. And your mom is a? A cosmetologist.
- 2:24And so they're in, you know, in the midst of like teenagers and they can, they get to
- 2:28see all of those things on a daily basis. And so give me some examples of some appropriate
- 2:36slang that could be used in day to day life. Sigma. And what does that mean? Sigma means
- 2:43like good, like cool. Like you're so sigma. You know? Okay. Slay because it means like
- 2:49slay. Like that's good. Like, like if you do, if you get some cute nails, slay. Slay
- 2:55queens. Riz. When you have Riz, like you can, you can get people, you can Riz people up.
- 3:04People up. Charisma. Charisma. For those of you know what charisma means. It's just short
- 3:08for charisma. Okay. And then so what are some other terms that we can use on a daily basis
- 3:18to being, to seem cool to those people that don't know Christ? What are some ways to bring
- 3:26in terminology to engage other people in conversations about Jesus? Like with our sleigh? Yeah. Like
- 3:37Jesus is so sigma. And so what would that mean? So like Jesus is cool. He's like the
- 3:44coolest person. Like he's like, he's him. Okay. Jesus is the alpha and the omega. And
- 4:02like alpha is actually like slang now. So like whenever you, it's like, cause you could
- 4:07say like alpha, like I don't know, people usually, I'm alpha, like I'm superior. Yeah. So then
- 4:12whenever you say God or Jesus or whatever is alpha, then people will know what you're
- 4:17talking about. And Jesus is drip. Like Jesus has drip and Jesus is drip. Like if you, he's
- 4:21just so cool. Yeah. Yeah. You have drip in. And like Jesus in your heart gives you so
- 4:26many aura points. Yeah. Yes. And aura points is like, kind of like, if you do something
- 4:30embarrassing, that's minus aura points. If you do something good, that's plus aura points.
- 4:35Okay. And then so the, someone that didn't know Christ, if you walked up and just had
- 4:41a conversation with them and you guys could say that Jesus was sigma, that Jesus had Riz,
- 4:49that Jesus had, he is the alpha. He is the omega that he has drip that wouldn't, you
- 4:56guys would be meeting them where they're at. You're, you're talking their language. Yes.
- 5:01What would be some examples of where Jesus met people in scripture? Who did he meet?
- 5:10His disciples. He picked up his disciples. Yeah. And where did he meet his disciples
- 5:15at? Some of them were on a boat. Yeah. They were at work. Just wherever they were just
- 5:20hanging out. And so do you have to meet people at church? No. Where could you meet youth
- 5:25at? Anywhere. Um, a coffee shop, sports event. Yeah. Definitely sports events. And you all,
- 5:32you guys all play sports. Yes. Um, and so how could you guys bring Jesus and slaying
- 5:39into sports? Um, well during volleyball, you could say, um, like talk to the people across
- 5:50the net. I mean, that's really fun. You could talk to them about Jesus and how sigma. Yeah.
- 5:56Okay. Yeah, I agree. And like, whenever you're cheering, um, you can actually, I don't know.
- 6:04I mean, so you guys have talked about in class, um, that you guys are starting to pray, um,
- 6:11or wanting to pray before you were meeting, uh, before your games or after your games.
- 6:16Yeah. Before the games with the other team. And so that's, that's bringing Christ into
- 6:20sports. What, um, what are some other ways that could draw youth into Christ? Um, that
- 6:29seems cool. And so it's not like you guys are being pushy to, to bring people to Christ,
- 6:34but what would be a way to bring people that are far from God that think that they're too
- 6:39cool. Um, maybe like by your actions of like, I kind of want to like act like them. And
- 6:46then like, if they come to ask you like, how are you always like this thing, you get God,
- 6:51you know what I'm talking about? How are you so stupid? Because I have Jesus on my side.
- 6:56Make sure you're always like, be kind and not being a beta. And so beta is bad. Beta
- 7:02is the opposite of alpha. You're like a bad person. Like the devil is a beta. Yeah. Okay.
- 7:08Yes. And you said skivvy. Skivity, skivity toilet. Riz. You know, like skivvy, skivvy,
- 7:15it's hard to explain. It is skivvy. It's like, it's also like sigma. It's like, you're so
- 7:20skivvy. Like it can be good or bad or bad. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Or like that's so skivvy,
- 7:26you know, okay. You're so skivvy. Yeah. So like that. And so what could you guys do as
- 7:32far as is there anything that you guys can clarify for us adults of how to meet youth?
- 7:43How could we, because I'm not going to remember that language. I'm not going to. Basically,
- 7:50you just kind of have to like be around them. And then the more you're around them and the
- 7:54more like you talk to them, then the more you understand their language. Yeah. The more
- 7:59you hear it. Like the more you'll understand it, like the more you're engaging in like
- 8:04that type of like the teenage talk, you know, do some research. And then, so what would
- 8:11be some other things that you guys would want to use to grow youth into Christ? What would
- 8:20be another way that you guys can bring up Christ to those that don't know? Well, I think
- 8:26like social media has a lot to do with people's life. Like that's, yeah. But most people do
- 8:31all day every day. So posting more about Jesus and like showing how cool like church every
- 8:37Sunday. It's like so fun and like just, yeah, it's fun to worship God. Like it's cool that
- 8:42he's like with us and stuff. And like showing that to people can bring them and be like,
- 8:48wow, I want to actually experience that. Yeah. How, how is worshiping God fun? Someone like
- 8:55doesn't know what worship means. How would you describe it? I would just say like, it's
- 9:01something like as I'm worshiping, like I'm just so happy and I'm just like in my place.
- 9:05Like I just feel so like, but what does worship mean? You're, you're, can you and Jesus, I
- 9:10think it's one of my ways is with me and Jesus are connecting. Like that's one of the ways
- 9:14I connect with God. I think of it as like, it's just a way of praising him for everything
- 9:20he's done for us. And for like, I was just about to say for everything he's done for
- 9:25everything he's like done to get us where we are in life and like give us everything
- 9:30we have. So what has he given you? Friends, family, a great life, great school to go to.
- 9:40I mean, we're sitting in a sauna doing a podcast. I'm just kidding. So I do that. So yeah, this
- 9:45is awesome. Yeah. And so what's the biggest gift that God, that Jesus has given us? Life.
- 9:53Yeah. Yeah. Just life and like, and like forgiveness for our sins and stuff. Also school. I think
- 10:00it's really cool that we can go to a Christian school and get to experience Jesus every day
- 10:06because I feel like I've learned so much more about Jesus. Like if I went to a public school,
- 10:11I would not know as much as I knew about Jesus at all. And then so as we have a great opportunity
- 10:19here and so there are kids that get to go to private schools and have classes about
- 10:26Bible. And we also have friends that don't have the opportunity to go to a Christian
- 10:31school and they have the privilege of going to a public school, which is a great educational
- 10:37system and they learn a ton of things. What is something that you have seen in the public
- 10:46school system about Jesus? Are you guys allowed to talk about God in school? Are you guys
- 10:53able to read scripture in school? Yeah, we are. It's just like teachers obviously aren't
- 10:59allowed to talk about like religious stuff, but us kids were allowed to do whatever we
- 11:03want. And I know that I keep a Bible in my locker and then like I'll read it on the days
- 11:08that I have nothing to do in like study hall and stuff like at school. And then I think
- 11:12it like shows people like just like, wow, like maybe I could get that. And you had a
- 11:19great thing. You said that your parents are both teachers. Do your parents believe in
- 11:26Christ? Yeah. And then are they able to talk about faith at school where they go? Is there
- 11:35any opportunities for kids to express their faith? There's FCA, which is the Fellowship
- 11:43of Christian Athletes. And that's on Wednesday mornings. And I know that like teachers and
- 11:49students are allowed to talk about it there. And I think that that's a big thing like to
- 11:54like express in public schools, in public schools. Yeah, that's that's great. And so
- 12:00is that something that you guys are since you guys are eighth graders going into high
- 12:04school? Is that something that you guys are going to join? Yes. Do you guys know much
- 12:10about it already? Yeah, I know. I mean, I know that like they meet on Wednesday mornings
- 12:15before school. And I don't really know what they do in it. But I know they like pray and
- 12:20they talk about stuff. And then like they host some things. And they have that field
- 12:25of faith field of faith, where our whole town goes to the football field and we have a night
- 12:30of worship and we have testimonies of athletes from past and present that has been saved
- 12:37by Christ. What do you feel would be something that a child that doesn't have the opportunity
- 12:46to go to school that doesn't have FCA in their school, what would be some easy steps as they
- 12:52walk into the new year to become closer with Christ? What are some just simple steps that
- 12:57an eighth grader a high school student could do just to start their walk with God? Make
- 13:08sure you're walking around with the right people. Yeah, you're not like finding yourself
- 13:12in the wrong crowd and getting lost in a group of people that won't help you get closer to
- 13:17God and the people will steer you the right way. I think it's I think for some people
- 13:23can be really hard to find the right people on into realize that you're with the right
- 13:27people because some people don't even realize that they're like with the wrong people because
- 13:31that's just where they've grown up their whole life. So I think it's like important for us
- 13:36to show that like there like there can be different groups and like they can be your
- 13:43people and people who you hang out with sometimes but just aren't like the best influences who
- 13:47you maybe shouldn't hang out with all the time. Yeah. And I also think just like I know
- 13:52sometimes it's like hard to pray because you don't understand like how to but I think that
- 13:58they need to realize that there's no right or wrong way to pray as long as you're like
- 14:02in the presence of God and talking to him honestly, then that's like a good way to start
- 14:06praying and honestly, if you just buy not buy download the Bible app that that helps
- 14:11you a lot. Yes. And we talked about that several times here on the podcast and how it's free.
- 14:17It's the you version Bible app. There's different ways. There's different plans on there. There
- 14:22is guided prayer on there. There's guided meditation on there. There's so many different
- 14:26free services that are out there but you are who you surround yourself with. And so if
- 14:32you have people that are running to drugs and alcohol and not they're skipping school
- 14:38and you're going to you're going to leave that you're just potentially just going to
- 14:41go down that right that same path. And so you know just getting to a guidance counselor,
- 14:46getting to a parent that is you know that could help you also too would be a great thing
- 14:54getting into a community. How could someone just go to church? Do you guys go to youth
- 14:59group? Yes, whenever we have it. Okay. And then is youth group fun? Is it cool? Is it
- 15:05a pain in your rear end? Is it something that you guys enjoy doing? It's definitely something
- 15:10that I look forward to going to all week. Like I'm just ready for Sunday. Is there some
- 15:16is there a reason that a kid should not go to youth? Should they be scared to go? No.
- 15:23Why would you not be scared to go to youth? I can see why somebody might be like, I don't
- 15:29know if I want to go because I won't know anyone there. That's a that's many of the
- 15:32reasons I heard like, I don't know if I want to come because I don't know anyone. Yeah.
- 15:36But really, like once you go, you realize how nice the people are and how friendly like
- 15:40everyone can be. And whenever you're in the environment with that kind of like the people
- 15:45that like know God and are honestly like just you know, like in the Christians and like
- 15:53just like that environment, you feel better about yourself because as I go to like a public
- 15:59school, I hang out with those people. Then I come here and hang out with my other friends
- 16:04from the faith Christian school and like from the faith. And I just feel so much better
- 16:09around them than I do. So then you know, and also too, I mean, the those that are so you
- 16:15surround yourself with they can build you up and I mean, because our words are life
- 16:18and death in our tongue. And so those that people that are surrounding you make sure
- 16:22that you have people that are, you know, lifting you up that are building you up that are,
- 16:27you know, wanting the best for you. And so we are meant to have an amazing life. And
- 16:32as we walk into 2025, what is one thing that God taught you in 24?
- 16:46Probably does not take advantage of like things that are going on around you, like live in
- 16:52a moment, you don't always need to be like around a device. Just be there, be present,
- 16:58you know.
- 16:59Okay.
- 17:00I've like realized, like, just different things in my life have pointed me to just like look
- 17:06around and I feel like that is from God showing me because like, the more you're on your phone,
- 17:11the less you are like, like on any device, the less you are to like look around and see
- 17:15what he actually gave you. And he's like taught me to be more grateful for what I actually
- 17:20have and what where he's put me in life because like everything that I have is so great.
- 17:25Okay.
- 17:26Yeah, I think my mom always says like, like get off your device, like, look around you
- 17:33to look at all this stuff you could be doing instead of sitting there scrolling looking
- 17:37at other people's lives like look at your own like look how blessed you are and stuff.
- 17:41I think that like it is very mind opening to think about just to sit there and think
- 17:46about like, wow, God gave me so much like stuff that I didn't even like that I don't
- 17:52even think about like I should be way more grateful.
- 17:56And we talk about that all the time is that and to me, you have a life right in front
- 18:00of you. But the device in front of you, you are sitting and watching someone else live
- 18:05their life and you're missing out on living your own. And so yes, while we're recording
- 18:09this on the device, yes, they're going to be listening to on a device. I mean, and so
- 18:13we're going to talk about having those limits, having those set times that you put God first.
- 18:19And so you're getting up in the morning, you're putting a hard stop on your phone. And so
- 18:22you're spending time in scripture, you're spending time with God to make sure that you
- 18:25are stepping off into the right foot. Do you guys start your day off with Christ?
- 18:30Most of the times when I get up, I just like lay in bed for a few minutes and like thank
- 18:36God that I woke up today and I get to experience the day I did yesterday. Now I get to experience
- 18:41more today.
- 18:42Okay. Is there a certain time that you have to pray?
- 18:46No, you can pray anytime.
- 18:51Is there a certain amount of time that you have to pray? Is he going to look down on
- 18:55you because you only spent five minutes with him? Is he going to look at you more greater
- 18:59because you spent three hours in your prayer room with him?
- 19:03No.
- 19:04No.
- 19:05What is a very important lesson for youth to know? Do you have to be perfect to come
- 19:11to Christ? Do you have to know everything about scripture?
- 19:18Can you come and be a liar, a cheater, a manipulator? Can you come and just be a sinner?
- 19:27Is there anybody that shouldn't come to Jesus? Is there any off limits? Who does he want
- 19:35to save? Because he loves everybody. And so it's so important and so for the you listeners
- 19:42that are tuning in, that you are loved, that you have a heavenly father in heaven that
- 19:48loves you, that wants a relationship with you, that you've done nothing, that he does
- 19:53not know that you've committed. He wants a relationship with you, that there is salvation.
- 20:00There is a person who died for you that loves you. And the girls are really just hoping
- 20:10and they're going to be in prayer for you guys this week over your vision, your change,
- 20:17your change of heart that God is going to come into your hearts and just un-callous
- 20:23what you feel religion is because it's not about being religious. It's about a relationship
- 20:28with your Lord and Savior.
- 20:32As we go into this next coming up episode, we hope that you guys like our guests as they
- 20:38are fresh perspectives from youth coming in for 2025. We know that tens of thousands
- 20:44of you listen on YouTube. We ask that you subscribe and leave some comments about some
- 20:50future podcast episodes. We know that the kids podcast, you can't leave comments, but
- 20:56there is an adult section that you guys can leave comments on. So we just ask that you
- 21:01guys subscribe, leave some comments in there. Who wants to pray us out?
- 21:05I will.
- 21:06Okay.
- 21:07Dear Lord, I just pray for everyone listening and everyone who's not listening. I just pray
- 21:13that they can start a great year and surround themselves with everyone they love and everyone
- 21:20who loves them. And I just pray that this year everyone will get closer to you and that
- 21:25they can start off fresh if we need to. She's going to pray. Amen.
- 21:29Amen. And so we hope that you guys have a great week this week and we want to thank
- 21:34Bella, Gwyn, and Tilly for joining us on Fostering Faith this week. We hope that you guys come
- 21:39back for another episode and have a great week guys. Bye.
- 21:43Bye.
- 21:44Bye.
- 21:45Thank you very much.
