- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, well, it is National Radio Day Week and
- 0:04Speaker 1: you've heard this before, but I'm going to play it again,
- 0:07Speaker 1: the reel of the last eleven years, and then I'll
- 0:10Speaker 1: tell you the latest and greatest from today's world of
- 0:14Speaker 1: radio for me. By the way, Alex Garrett here, One
- 0:17Speaker 1: Leg Up Alex. We have totally rebranded. It'll be one
- 0:21Speaker 1: look Up, Alex News, one Leg Up, Alex Sports, one
- 0:23Speaker 1: Leg Up, Alex Adapts. All right here on One Leg
- 0:26Speaker 1: Up with Alex Garrett, the One Leg Up Alex Network.
- 0:29Speaker 2: But but I cannot let this we go away without
- 0:33Speaker 2: playing you the current montage of where it's been going
- 0:37Speaker 2: in the last eleven years in radio.
- 0:40Speaker 1: We're coming together here on one eleven Broadway made Alix.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Yeah right, you gotta understand you and I knew Jackie.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Actually got to give credit to Alex Garrett. There, did
- 0:48Speaker 1: Alex find that sket You? Alex is our young engineer,
- 0:52Speaker 1: city bro.
- 0:52Speaker 4: We are honored to have you as part of the team,
- 0:55Speaker 4: and you do a good.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Job for us. Alex. Alex, come on, you know, Alex said.
- 1:05Speaker 5: M ans Alex, thank you for being here behind the
- 1:10Speaker 5: always a pleasure artor how was your day today?
- 1:12Speaker 3: Congratulations on your ten year anniversary thanks to Alex Garrett
- 1:16Speaker 3: and that podcast people at the station. I forwarded it
- 1:21Speaker 3: to some people at the station and Christina. They said,
- 1:25Speaker 3: there's something here, we like it. So Alex Garrett is
- 1:31Speaker 3: single handedly.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Responsible responsible for introducing Christina Cakes to the radio world
- 1:37Speaker 1: through my one Leg of Alex podcast and of course
- 1:40Speaker 1: her calling to Lucas Farrar, who's voice you just heard?
- 1:43Speaker 1: You also heard Curtis Sliwa, Frank Morano, Joe Piscopo, Kevin McCullough,
- 1:48Speaker 1: Arthur i Idalla, and so many more that that couldn't
- 1:51Speaker 1: fit that minute reel, but had a year twelve kickoff. Well,
- 1:56Speaker 1: it started in the call screen chair for ally, since
- 2:00Speaker 1: I've been in radio now since twenty thirteen, Salem radio
- 2:04Speaker 1: host nationally syndicated radio host Mike Gallagher, he reached out
- 2:08Speaker 1: and said, would you like to be the next call
- 2:10Speaker 1: screener for the Mike Gallagher Show. Now, keep in mind
- 2:12Speaker 1: I filled in behind the board for Eric Hanson and
- 2:15Speaker 1: I've done a little call screening for Mike in the past,
- 2:18Speaker 1: so I was really eager to say yes to this.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It would feel like moving up in the Salem world.
- 2:24Speaker 1: So of course I said yes, and I'm thankful that Salem,
- 2:26Speaker 1: New York and Salem National came to this agreement where
- 2:29Speaker 1: I could do both. We're doing call screening in the
- 2:31Speaker 1: morning for Mike and then back to Salem, New York
- 2:34Speaker 1: doing the IDALLA work during doing production work as a
- 2:37Speaker 1: production assistant, working on all cylinders last couple of weeks,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and continuing that and of course going to be Philliam
- 2:43Speaker 1: as producer for Joe Sabilia in the Piscopo Show, and
- 2:48Speaker 1: then engineering all throughout for Joe Piscobo in the coming weeks.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But I really wanted to play this because it felt
- 2:57Speaker 1: full circle on that first Monday of the twelve year anniversary,
- 3:02Speaker 1: because Mike said this about how he got to know
- 3:06Speaker 1: me thirteen years ago, and I'm so thankful he gave
- 3:09Speaker 1: us this shout out here.
- 3:10Speaker 4: It dawned on me, We've got a great candidate in
- 3:14Speaker 4: New York City, working near down the hall from Eric
- 3:18Speaker 4: and Christian, a guy named Alex Garrett. Now Alex has
- 3:22Speaker 4: been a dedicated, wonderful employee of Salem, New York for
- 3:26Speaker 4: quite a while. And Alex is an inspiration. We love him.
- 3:30Speaker 4: He's got a great attitude, he's great at what he does.
- 3:33Speaker 4: He's filled in for Eric a couple of times, but
- 3:34Speaker 4: now he's officially our phone screener, and he likes to
- 3:37Speaker 4: tell the story about how years and years ago I
- 3:41Speaker 4: had an event with Curtis Sliwa. Alex was an intern,
- 3:44Speaker 4: and Alex says that because of his interaction with me,
- 3:49Speaker 4: it kind of turned him into wanting to spend his
- 3:51Speaker 4: life in radio. So for this to come full circle
- 3:54Speaker 4: now is just a blessing. So when you call eight
- 3:57Speaker 4: hundred and sixty five to five, Mike, welcome our new
- 3:59Speaker 4: phone screener, our dear friend, Alex Garrethan.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And it was interesting because I was just starting as
- 4:05Speaker 1: an intern slash part time engineer, and I remember vividly
- 4:10Speaker 1: Graham Walsh our hotel election night twenty thirteen, the night
- 4:13Speaker 1: de Blasio won his first term. Mike threw it to me,
- 4:17Speaker 1: actually to give updates, I believe on the Virginia race
- 4:21Speaker 1: at the time for governor. So I just I keep
- 4:26Speaker 1: recalling that whenever he and I have interacted. Now I'm
- 4:29Speaker 1: on his team, Team Gallagher, and I'm very fortunate to
- 4:31Speaker 1: join Christian and Yasmin and Eric Hanson and the Gallagher crew.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Now in addition, to my Salem, New York duties. So
- 4:42Speaker 1: the full circle moment didn't end there though, because later
- 4:44Speaker 1: that night on the Arthur I Dalla Power Hour, another
- 4:47Speaker 1: familiar friend I'm mentor and someone who really got me
- 4:50Speaker 1: in the door, along with Curtis Sliwa, Frank Morano, filled in.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And this is how that went. On August eleventh, the
- 4:59Speaker 1: eve of the twelve year anniversary. I mean, this is
- 5:01Speaker 1: all happening the week of the twelfth year of being
- 5:04Speaker 1: at Salem Media. You talk about full circle, Mike in
- 5:06Speaker 1: the morning, Frank in the afternoon and evening. It couldn't
- 5:10Speaker 1: get more full circle than that.
- 5:12Speaker 5: I spent the better part of the last twenty two
- 5:14Speaker 5: years in the world of talk radio, for the last
- 5:17Speaker 5: five years hosting a nationally syndicated overnight program. But before
- 5:21Speaker 5: that I was working at right here at AM nine
- 5:24Speaker 5: to seventy doing a weekly show during the weekends and
- 5:28Speaker 5: producing the Joe Piscopo Show and the John Gamblke Show
- 5:30Speaker 5: and the Curtis Leeverers Show during the week And that's
- 5:33Speaker 5: where I got to know our engineer and producer for
- 5:36Speaker 5: the evening, the inimitable, that one and only Alex Garrett
- 5:40Speaker 5: and it's a real privilege to be able to reconnect
- 5:42Speaker 5: with Alex and work with him again on this particular show. Alex,
- 5:45Speaker 5: how have you been my friend?
- 5:46Speaker 1: Oh Man? You know, twelve years ago this week you
- 5:49Speaker 1: brought me in with Curtis and here we are twelve
- 5:51Speaker 1: years later. Start a full circle on my end. Now,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you did miss one guy who had entered, say Man,
- 5:55Speaker 1: a Hall of Famer, Billy Billy Wagner.
- 5:57Speaker 5: That's right, and as a MET fan usually he's always
- 6:00Speaker 5: the guy that you think of first when you hear
- 6:02Speaker 5: enter Samman.
- 6:03Speaker 4: That's fair and fair enough.
- 6:05Speaker 1: So we're doing multiple departments for Salem Media. Group goes next?
- 6:10Speaker 1: I don't know, but we're here twelve years later. We
- 6:12Speaker 1: are moving up. It feels like and I'm so thankful
- 6:15Speaker 1: to my first OPS manager, Mark Debor, who really had
- 6:19Speaker 1: listened to all the advice to bring me on board
- 6:21Speaker 1: and is still there to this day. Matt Sambolan, who's
- 6:24Speaker 1: the current OPS manager and who pushes me to really
- 6:28Speaker 1: excel every damn day I walk in that office at
- 6:31Speaker 1: Salem Media. Also the new GM Laura Schaeffer, and of
- 6:35Speaker 1: course legendary GM Jerry Crowley. Both of them continue to
- 6:39Speaker 1: take their chance on me every day I walk in
- 6:41Speaker 1: that door at Salem Media and so this World Radio Day,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I got to shout out the Salem Media Group family.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And of course Gaby who now joined us every Sunday
- 6:51Speaker 1: on shake it Off with Martin Lucas and is my
- 6:53Speaker 1: fiance and wakes me up for every morning shift possible,
- 6:58Speaker 1: So thank for I couldn't do any of this without
- 7:01Speaker 1: her guidance and her you know, much more paying attention
- 7:05Speaker 1: to the schedule than I do sometimes. So there's that.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And of course Mom and Dad and my pop and
- 7:10Speaker 1: my pops up in Heaven, who I know used to
- 7:13Speaker 1: listen to Mike every day right after Piscopo and got
- 7:18Speaker 1: to meet all these guys throughout the years. So you know,
- 7:21Speaker 1: my pops was very much involved in the nine to
- 7:24Speaker 1: seventy family twelve years ago and we miss them today
- 7:28Speaker 1: twelve years later. But there you go. That's the Salem part.
- 7:32Speaker 1: But on the side, I love to do play by play,
- 7:34Speaker 1: and I have to say I cannot let National Radio
- 7:38Speaker 1: Day go without playing the four calls that when I'm
- 7:41Speaker 1: not talking politics on nine seventy or adaptability and Disabled
- 7:44Speaker 1: News on nine to seventy, I'm out there calling the
- 7:49Speaker 1: games I love, whether it's baseball, basketball or whatever. So
- 7:53Speaker 1: here's a little montage of the four calls. I really
- 7:55Speaker 1: enjoyed doing that. Though it didn't make it to radio,
- 7:58Speaker 1: did make it to this podcast one leg up with
- 8:00Speaker 1: Alex Garrett. And and also we're tailored as if you
- 8:07Speaker 1: were listening to it on the radio. Burials all behind
- 8:13Speaker 1: now goes to the ballot. Here every one that was
- 8:16Speaker 1: laced in the right field for right text and a
- 8:20Speaker 1: second go home, not a gun, and the nape take
- 8:26Speaker 1: a five, please, Creig burned to McDonald mcdonehead shuts god.
- 8:34Speaker 2: One thousand points, one thousand career points for Khalil McDonald.
- 8:41Speaker 1: That was launch in the left field, and it will
- 8:45Speaker 1: be guys. A solo homer, a leadoff home run for
- 8:51Speaker 1: kine Ruise that one is looked in the right building
- 8:56Speaker 1: comes in and him all over the wall. And here
- 9:00Speaker 1: it comes the winning run to score in walk off fashion.
- 9:07Speaker 1: And Sweezy comes through a walk off win for the
- 9:12Speaker 1: American League. Yeah, urfield properties ball. And of course we
- 9:21Speaker 1: talked sports a lot here and I cannot let this
- 9:23Speaker 1: go without thanking lou Terminello, who of course was there
- 9:26Speaker 1: thirteen well twelve years ago in twenty thirteen when I
- 9:30Speaker 1: joined up, we had joined up the same day, and
- 9:33Speaker 1: he was of course sports director for many years. And
- 9:37Speaker 1: now we talk both on and off air about the
- 9:40Speaker 1: radio journey I'm on, and I'm so thankful for her
- 9:42Speaker 1: support and guidance and really a mentorship along the way,
- 9:48Speaker 1: long after he actually retired from nine seventy and twenty
- 9:52Speaker 1: what was that eighteen? I believe it's just time is flying,
- 9:56Speaker 1: isn't it? But uh, there you go? That is is it?
- 10:01Speaker 1: National Radio date twenty twenty five in the books. I
- 10:04Speaker 1: could not let the week go by without making this
- 10:08Speaker 1: montage and this update of where we're going next in radio.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It's going to be in the call screening chair for
- 10:17Speaker 1: Mike Gallagher in the morning and then in the production
- 10:20Speaker 1: assistant chair and engineering chair for nine to seventy either
- 10:25Speaker 1: you know, in the morning as well or later in
- 10:26Speaker 1: the day one or the other. I'm on both ends here,
- 10:29Speaker 1: So it's going to be exciting as this journey rolls
- 10:32Speaker 1: through into September. I can't believe it into year thirteen,
- 10:37Speaker 1: I should say, so this is you know, some people
- 10:40Speaker 1: consider Chapter thirteen filing for bankrutry. I consider chapter thirteen
- 10:45Speaker 1: for this one a pretty lucky chapter so far. And
- 10:49Speaker 1: let's keep at it as a family, as a cohort
- 10:52Speaker 1: here at the One Leg Up Alex network, and of
- 10:54Speaker 1: course with the rebrand of this to be one Leg
- 10:57Speaker 1: Up Alex News, one Leg Up Alex Sports, one like
- 11:00Speaker 1: a Blex adapting. I feel like this podcast in and
- 11:04Speaker 1: of itself is moving forward all at the same time.
- 11:07Speaker 1: And I have to add this. When I started the podcast,
- 11:11Speaker 1: it was because I heard about how our tax dayerpayer
- 11:15Speaker 1: dollars are being wasted through nine seventy observing every host
- 11:19Speaker 1: talking about all of this government waste, it inspired me
- 11:22Speaker 1: to start this show. Well, how cool is that in
- 11:26Speaker 1: the March of twenty twenty five, what I've said on
- 11:29Speaker 1: the show became real life when we went down to
- 11:32Speaker 1: d DNC, the National Dispert Dicies, National Coalitions Spring Public
- 11:38Speaker 1: Policy Forum to actually advocate for people with disabilities, who
- 11:42Speaker 1: are tax paying citizens of America to get the rights
- 11:46Speaker 1: they deserve. That is the point of why this will start,
- 11:48Speaker 1: because we have to know how our tax dollars are
- 11:50Speaker 1: being spent, and why not advocate for our tax dollars
- 11:54Speaker 1: to be spent rightly? So when I went to DC.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It kind of felt like I was moving what I've
- 11:59Speaker 1: learned over the last twelve years and what I've been
- 12:02Speaker 1: talking about at the same time on this platform for
- 12:05Speaker 1: twelve years forward. So I got to say that was
- 12:08Speaker 1: a real example of how much I've learned at Salem
- 12:11Speaker 1: Media and how much I'm putting into practice twelve years later,
- 12:15Speaker 1: and I'm very thankful I get to do that. And
- 12:20Speaker 1: I mentioned the Public Policy Forum because they're doing it again,
- 12:23Speaker 1: and I don't believe we're going to go this year,
- 12:26Speaker 1: but I did get this update real fast. I know
- 12:28Speaker 1: it's sort of a PSA at the end of this,
- 12:30Speaker 1: but while it's on my mind. In September, they're going
- 12:34Speaker 1: to have the twenty twenty five d DNC Annual Fall
- 12:37Speaker 1: Forum taking place Monday, September fifteenth from nine am to
- 12:41Speaker 1: twelve pm at the Rayburn House Office building in DC,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and they are cordially inviting you to attend. The event
- 12:50Speaker 1: will feature legislative and public policy updates from congressional champions
- 12:55Speaker 1: and key committee staff, with the tenants from medical, patient
- 12:58Speaker 1: and professional holders and industrial industry partners. So I'll put
- 13:05Speaker 1: a link to their website for more information, but there
- 13:07Speaker 1: you go the DNC Fall for Forum in the next
- 13:11Speaker 1: couple of weeks here and excited to talk about that
- 13:15Speaker 1: real fast, because I believe if nine to seventy and
- 13:20Speaker 1: the Answer did not give me this chance twelve years ago,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I wouldn't even known about these other advocacy groups because
- 13:28Speaker 1: I wouldn't have even thought to talk about how our
- 13:31Speaker 1: tax dollars are being spent. I was so sports minded
- 13:35Speaker 1: going into radio in twenty twelve, and I still love sports,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and I still will complain that the Yanks lost ten
- 13:41Speaker 1: to one today. But at the end of the day,
- 13:43Speaker 1: whether you're an athlete like Aaron Judge, whether you're someone
- 13:47Speaker 1: with disability, whether you're a pop star, culture icon, whatever,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you pay your taxes. And I realized that life is
- 13:55Speaker 1: bigger than talking about a baseball game twelve years ago,
- 14:00Speaker 1: and now we're putting that into practice. And I think
- 14:03Speaker 1: it's because I've listened to Kevin in the afternoons for
- 14:07Speaker 1: nine years and plus on WMCA talk about this. I've
- 14:11Speaker 1: listened to Frank every Sunday morning when he was on
- 14:13Speaker 1: nine to seventy. I saw him in action, and of
- 14:17Speaker 1: course engineering with Piscopal, listening to Piscopal, listening to Mike Gallagher.
- 14:23Speaker 1: They all have taught me that we must hold our
- 14:28Speaker 1: elected officials accountable. That is bigger than baseball. And how
- 14:33Speaker 1: do you do it. You partner with the DDNC or
- 14:38Speaker 1: any coalition that is doing advocacy work. You might call
- 14:42Speaker 1: it lobbying lobbying, I call it advocacy work because it's
- 14:46Speaker 1: important that we are in the ears of those we
- 14:49Speaker 1: pay through our taxes. We are our salaries pay these
- 14:54Speaker 1: people's taxes. So I did not mean to get a
- 14:57Speaker 1: rant on National Radio Days honoring today, but it's part
- 15:03Speaker 1: of how I got here. The radio world is how
- 15:06Speaker 1: I became part of the advocacy world, and there's no
- 15:11Speaker 1: doubt those two go hand in hand. Signing off for now,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I'm one leg up, Alex Garrett
