Transcript
- 0:04This this is probably the hardest recording I've ever had to do.
- 0:13Today, I wanna honor and celebrate the life of a truly remarkable
- 0:19man, my dear friend, my colleague, my cohost, coach Jim Clayton.
- 0:28Jim left us on Thursday, 09/18/2025.
- 0:35While our hearts are heavy, we're reminded from Psalm 34 verse 18
- 0:42that the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and
- 0:47save such as be of a contrite spirit.
- 0:54Even in our sorrow, God's presence is near, offering comfort and
- 1:00strength to us. I first met Jim when I was 15 years old.
- 1:06I was a student at CK High School, and he came and spoke at the
- 1:10teen institute event that was being held.
- 1:13I don't remember the exact details of what it was he said that
- 1:18day, but I remember this man being the most positive person I'd
- 1:23ever heard speak in my life. That impression stuck with me.
- 1:29And as I continued to grow and to navigate through life, it left
- 1:36a lasting mark on my own perspective.
- 1:40Years later, while I was completing my student teaching at
- 1:44Huntington High School, I had the opportunity to eat lunch with
- 1:48Jim Clayton every day.
- 1:51It's during that time that I began to know him as a colleague, as
- 1:55a man, and eventually as a friend.
- 2:02His insights and wisdom were incredibly inspiring to me as a
- 2:05young educator, shaping the way that I approach teaching and
- 2:11leadership.
- 2:14Several years later, I accepted a position teaching at Caval
- 2:18Midland High School, the same year that Jim was transferred
- 2:23there.
- 2:25This is the place and the time where our friendship truly began
- 2:30to grow.
- 2:32Watching his interactions with students and staff taught me the
- 2:36right way to do things, not just as a teacher or as a coach, but
- 2:42as a person.
- 2:45The highlights of that was helping him with technology, which was
- 2:49not his strong suit, but it was a pleasure because he was always
- 2:56willing to learn and try new things.
- 3:02In 2018, I had the first opportunity to sit down with Jim and
- 3:08record a conversation for a podcast that I was producing at that
- 3:11time.
- 3:13By this point, he had retired from teaching and he was focused
- 3:19solely on his business at Sports City U.
- 3:23It was here that I gained an even deeper understanding of his
- 3:28ideas and his philosophies.
- 3:32His ability to break things down for his students and his
- 3:35athletes was still present, still strong, and still deeply
- 3:41inspiring.
- 3:46In 2024, I learned of Jim's illness with colon cancer and I made
- 3:51my way to Sports City U to see him.
- 3:56I stood with him at center court in the gym, arms around him, and
- 4:03prayed with him for healing from God.
- 4:09Not long after that, he reached out and asked him or asked me to
- 4:15partner with him to start a podcast, this podcast.
- 4:22He wanted to share his insights on life, not just basketball as
- 4:27many people might have thought he wanted to do, but the lessons
- 4:31that had guided his own life and the lives of everyone he had the
- 4:35chance to influence.
- 4:39We launched this podcast on July 1, and over the course of
- 4:44recording 11 episodes with Jim, I had some of the best
- 4:50conversations I've ever had in the decade I've been in
- 4:53podcasting.
- 4:56It was in those moments that Jim became 1 of my closest friends,
- 5:01and I'm so proud to be able to say that.
- 5:06The last evening we recorded together remains vivid in my heart
- 5:12and in my mind, and it's the last memory I have of Jim in person
- 5:17before his passing.
- 5:21After we finished and we're preparing to leave that night, he had
- 5:26just gotten his best buddy Alfie, ever present Alfie, into the
- 5:31car, and he turned back to me.
- 5:35As I did every week after we recorded, I told him, I love you,
- 5:39brother. This time was different. He always told me he loved me.
- 5:46We always fist bumped or shook hands, But this night, he grabbed
- 5:53me. He embraced me as he told me he loved me.
- 5:59That was the last conversation I had with him, and it is the
- 6:05memory that I will hold on to forever of my friend, Jim Clayton.
- 6:16Jim was many things to many people.
- 6:19He was a devoted classroom teacher, an inspiring coach, a mentor,
- 6:26a podcast co host, and above all, a friend whose heart, humor,
- 6:34and integrity touched everyone he met.
- 6:40His life was marked by service, dedication, and an unwavering
- 6:45commitment to helping others grow.
- 6:50As a classroom teacher, Jim inspired countless students.
- 6:56He didn't just teach lessons from textbooks.
- 7:00He taught lessons for life.
- 7:04He challenged his students to think critically, to act with
- 7:10integrity, and to develop both character and resilience.
- 7:19Many of his students will will carry this guidance and
- 7:23encouragement that he gave them forward for the rest of their
- 7:28lives.
- 7:31As a coach, Jim brought out the best in those who were under his
- 7:36guidance.
- 7:39He believed deeply in teamwork, in perseverance, and in the value
- 7:47of encouragement just as much as he did discipline.
- 7:52On the court, in the locker room, in an everyday life, his
- 7:58approach was always the same, help others succeed.
- 8:05And to do that with heart and with humility.
- 8:15Jim's life remains a reminder to us of the power of dedication,
- 8:24kindness, and genuine human connection.
- 8:29He leaves a legacy measured not only in accomplishments, but in
- 8:36lives touched, lessons imparted, and hearts encouraged.
- 8:45Second Timothy chapter 4 verses 7 and 8 says, I have fought a
- 8:52good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.
- 8:59Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness.
- 9:06Jim fought the good fight in his own way, leaving a life that
- 9:12inspires all of us. At the center of Jim's life was his family.
- 9:25He and his beloved wife, Anne, shared 42 years together.
- 9:3142 incredible years together.
- 9:34It was a marriage built on love, on partnership, and on laughter.
- 9:44As a devoted father to his daughter Elizabeth and his son Wes and
- 9:49his wife Kayla, he poured his heart into guiding, teaching, and
- 9:57supporting them.
- 10:01Above all, he adored his 2 granddaughters, Vera and Heidi, who
- 10:07affectionately called him pop pop.
- 10:11And, of course, by his side through it all was his loyal
- 10:16companion and best buddy Alfie, who shared in the love and the
- 10:22joy of Jim's life.
- 10:27To Anne, Elizabeth, Wes, Kayla, Vera, Heidi, I know that no words
- 10:36can truly ease the loss you feel.
- 10:41Matthew chapter 5 verse 4 tells us, blessed are they that mourn
- 10:49for they shall be comforted.
- 10:54I may not have the right words to comfort you, but I want you to
- 10:59know that I am here and we all are here to walk with you, to
- 11:08support you, and to carry some of the weight of this loss
- 11:12together.
- 11:17Jim's love, guidance, and example will continue to live on in all
- 11:23of all of you, shaping your lives for years to come.
- 11:31To the family, the friends, the students, and and colleagues who
- 11:36remember him, Let us be sure to honor him by carrying forward the
- 11:42values he lived by, integrity, compassion, and service to others.
- 11:53Let us remember Jim not only in grief, but with gratitude.
- 12:01Gratitude for the privilege of knowing him.
- 12:10Coach Jim Clayton, thank you for your life, your guidance, and
- 12:20your friendship.
- 12:23You will be deeply missed, but your spirit, your lessons, and
- 12:36your laughter, that will live on in all of us.
- 12:46We all need to follow Jim's model with bam.
- 12:52We need to work to believe bigger, achieve louder, and motivate
- 12:59stronger just as he did every day of his life.
- 13:11May you rest in peace, my friend. Bye outside.
