- 0:07Mike Marrs: All right, Bob.
- 0:08Mike Marrs: Here we go.
- 0:09Mike Marrs: Here we go.
- 0:12Mike Marrs: Sorry, you gotta take your head off, you know.
- 0:15Mike Marrs: It might fit over the top of it, you know.
- 0:19Mike Marrs: There you go.
- 0:22Mike Marrs: I think I'll leave that up to you, Bob.
- 0:24Mike Marrs: I think it's around the corner, sir.
- 0:30Mike Marrs: There's a door around on the side to get to the museum.
- 0:32Mike Marrs: If you're coming out today, by all means, be sure and go in and check out the museum.
- 0:36Mike Marrs: Uh it's open to the public today.
- 0:38Mike Marrs: It's not open to the public every day because this is a functioning school.
- 0:43Mike Marrs: And uh the school's gracious enough to give the Spring Branch Alumni Foundation a space to put their museum, and it's really cool and it brings back a lot of memories and a lot of a lot of thoughts about what could be.
- 0:56Mike Marrs: Joining us now, Bob.
- 1:00Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Pronounced like the court order, but it's that's anglicized.
- 1:09Mike Marrs: Can't read my own writing.
- 1:11Mike Marrs: I gotta get a better pen.
- 1:12Mike Marrs: That's my excuse anyway.
- 1:14Mike Marrs: So, Bob, so you're out here with your 1922 Brewster.
- 1:19Mike Marrs: Uh, I think the only thing older is maybe that car to the right.
- 1:22Mike Marrs: Correct.
- 1:23Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 1:24Mike Marrs: So so your Brewster, it's it's it is it like a limo?
- 1:32Mike Marrs: I mean, it's got an open driver space.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yes, it is the ultimate uh for uh the ultra wealthy.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: Uh it was made in New York City.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Uh Brewster was the ultimate uh coach builder back in the 1800s.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: And in the early 1900s, they started building bodies for Rolls-Royce, uh Daimler, Minerva, Mercedes, and then around 19 uh ten they started importing Rolls-Royce chassis, but when the Lusitania was sunk, that ended their importing.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: And so they decided to start making uh the total car, and they chose the night engine uh sleeve valve engine because it is so quiet and the wealthy people didn't like a noisy car.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: So the Rolls-Royce of its time, yeah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: So they built uh cars from 1915 to 1925, perhaps uh uh we around 479 during that time, and approximately 25 are still uh in existence.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Uh in 1922, you could have bought a Ford Roadster for$319.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, or this car, the standard town Broham, which is the body style, uh, was$10,700.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: This car had the optional leather uh chauffeur doors, uh fenders, and the uh middle uh what look like fenders, uh Brewster called them wings.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Uh the uh front fenders on uh my car are um reproduction, but the uh wings and the rear fenders are original uh leather from 1922.
- 3:44Mike Marrs: Wow.
- 3:46Mike Marrs: So I I yeah, I wish we could get it on the camera over here, but I what I have to ask.
- 3:53Mike Marrs: So the driver is out in an open space.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: Well, the windshield does go up, and you can see uh there's a uh a top that is rolled up and there's held with two straps and there are uh curtains on the side to enclose the chauffeur in inclement weather and you know winters in New York City.
- 4:13Mike Marrs: Yeah, that's what I was wondering about.
- 4:14Mike Marrs: I mean, that guy's got to be getting cold if he's sitting out there in the open like that.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, having the top of the windshield down um makes it more obvious that you have a chauffeur.
- 4:26Mike Marrs: Uh uh they can see a better status symbol.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: That was the status.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: So interesting.
- 4:37Mike Marrs: So it's got a, I guess, do you does it have an electric start or do you have to hand crank that?
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: No, it has electric stark.
- 4:43Mike Marrs: Uh$11,000, Mary.
- 4:45Mike Marrs: Oh, well, of course it does.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Um, there is a crank.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Um right now you can't see the crankhole cover because there's a leather apron that covers the the front uh you know gears and everything.
- 5:00Mike Marrs: Yeah, we don't want any of that to show as we're going down to the opera.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: And there is uh as you mentioned, the opera, there is one fold-down seat in the back.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: The back uh area is um reported to be totally original, and the doors closed just perfectly because uh again, uh Brewster was uh the ultimate bodybuilder, and that's why Rolls-Royce, in fact, um Brewster was uh building bodies for Rolls-Royce, and uh then in 1925, Rolls-Royce bought Brewster, the company, uh, so that they could uh have total control of the uh the the designers and the craftsmen who were making these ultimate uh bodies.
- 5:50Mike Marrs: Very good, very cool.
- 5:54Mike Marrs: So I'll tell you, um what about how how did you acquire this?
- 6:03Mike Marrs: I mean, how did you go through that process?
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: I've had the uh car only two weeks.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Um I found out about it.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: A collector in uh Carrollton, Texas had uh uh medical issues and uh a another uh Packard collector in the Dallas Fort Worth area had uh notified the Packard Club in Houston uh of the this collection um that uh was in uh Carrollton.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: When I saw the name Brewster, it really pulled my chain.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Um and I started communicating uh with the family.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: And um when uh I was told it was a running car, uh I I said, you know, uh I will purchase it when it's running.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: The reason it pulled my chain was back when I was growing up in the uh early 50s, uh north of Philadelphia, my father worked at the uh Johnsville Naval Air Development Center, and the administration building had Brewster blazoned across the top of the building.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: Uh and I always wondered what's what is the connection to Brewster to the Navy.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: Well, uh when I found out about this car, I started doing some research and I found that uh cars and airplanes were made out of wood back in the early 1900s.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: And Brewster was a uh great bodybuilder working with wood.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Brewster started building floats for Chance Vaught out in Long Island, where my father had worked in the late 30s.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Um so there's this connection of my father, Chance Vaught, and my father now at Johnsville uh with the Brewster.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: Uh so it just um and the more I it just it it just fit.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: So uh the more I uh did research and found that uh this was such an exquisite automobile, uh, so very rare.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Um there uh of the perhaps 25 that are known, uh most are in museums.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: In fact, one is in a museum 600 miles east of Moscow.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Uh I would love to get uh uh the serial number.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: All we have is a picture that a Russian had sent uh posted uh on the internet.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Um but uh there are very few running, and uh I'm just uh very delighted to be able to take it out to shows and share it with uh uh everyone who has never seen one.
- 9:06Mike Marrs: Well I didn't get a chance to see you come in uh this morning.
- 9:08Mike Marrs: You drove it here though.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Actually, no, it's uh I got a trailer back there, yes, okay uh and uh you drove it from there to there, okay.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: Yes, it is is driving, yes.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Um so it's it's a real fun car to uh to show and share with people.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: So what do you tow?
- 9:31Mike Marrs: You tow it.
- 9:32Mike Marrs: I mean, you obviously you got the trailer, it's an enclosed trailer.
- 9:35Mike Marrs: Almost all those trailers are enclosed over there.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Yes, I had I have a uh uh a Ford uh diesel truck that I I tow my cars.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Um my LeBaron town car I've towed to Ohio several times.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Uh I took it to the Indianapolis Speedway Fort Centennial in uh 2011.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: But the Brewster is uh that's a special it's a very special car.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: So what do you what is your daily driver?
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: My daily driver is a 2001 Ford Expedition and my 2001 F-250 diesel.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: All my cars are in certified antiques.
- 10:22Mike Marrs: Well, you know, if you're gonna be in the antiques, you know, why not?
- 10:25Mike Marrs: You know?
- 10:25Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 10:26Mike Marrs: Of course, with that that 250, it's it'll it'll it'll run a long ways.
- 10:31Mike Marrs: Yeah, so my uh my brother happens to have he's got a RAM 2500 with a diesel in it.
- 10:38Mike Marrs: Last I heard, he was uh it's a 2019, something like that, 2020, got it just before COVID.
- 10:46Mike Marrs: I think he's bumping 140,000 miles on it now.
- 10:49Mike Marrs: Uh-huh.
- 10:50Mike Marrs: And uh, I'm not looking for another car, yeah.
- 10:52Mike Marrs: It just keeps going.
- 10:53Mike Marrs: The diesel.
- 10:53Mike Marrs: Yeah, that's right.
- 10:54Mike Marrs: He he doesn't necessarily like filling it up right now.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Well, um this one is just shy of 200,000.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: And and when I bought it in, I think it was 2008, diesel was cheaper than gasoline.
- 11:11Mike Marrs: Yes, yeah.
- 11:11Mike Marrs: Yes, yes, yes.
- 11:13Mike Marrs: And uh I uh I I've had some conversations with my father years ago about diesel and where it actually comes from.
- 11:22Mike Marrs: He worked in the refineries and stuff, and uh, you know, it it amazes me that they can charge that much for diesel these days, knowing that it's basically junk.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: It it takes less to make diesel than gasoline.
- 11:34Mike Marrs: And it's leftovers.
- 11:35Mike Marrs: I mean, it it's it just I guess that's what makes the world go round.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 11:43Mike Marrs: Very good, very good.
- 11:46Mike Marrs: So all right.
- 11:48Mike Marrs: And that's the only so you didn't bring the other one out today, did you?
- 11:50Mike Marrs: You just you just brought that one?
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: I I brought the La Baron Town car, which is next to it, which uh um silver and black.
- 11:58Mike Marrs: Ah okay, there's a firebird between me and that.
- 12:01Mike Marrs: So yes.
- 12:02Mike Marrs: All right, I I can see the roof of it now.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: I bought that uh as a a shell on a frame and three truckloads of parts.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Um they made Packard made approximately 15 of these uh LeBaron uh town cars, and this is I've been tracking them for since 1967.
- 12:26Mike Marrs: Really?
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: I I bought my first Packard in 1963 out of a junkyard.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: Um and uh this is the only one known to exist.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: What you did I uh I was trying to find the um original owner of uh uh the the Packard and I tried down down to uh 19 uh 57.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: It was a uh man uh it was parked on a street in South Dallas, and the the man walked up to the knocked on the door, ma'am.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: I'd like to buy that old Packard on the street.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: And she said, I'm sorry, but uh the owner is on vacation in Huntsville.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: Uh I thought, uh no problem, no problem.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: I called the warden.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: I said, I'd like your guest list from Dallas in 1958.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: And she said, he said, I'm sorry, but that information is personal and confidential.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: You'd need a subpoena to get that.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: I said, I got I got three of them at home.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: They're eight, ten, and thirteen.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Well, the warden didn't say anything.
- 13:49Mike Marrs: Didn't see the humor in that.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: So I never uh the Brewster um has a license plate uh on the front and the back that is uh uh a license plate from Scotland, the area about 50 miles south of Edinburgh.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Um I'm trying to find out the original owner of that license plate.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Uh I've written to Scotland, but uh my neighbor who is uh from Scotland uh had indicated it's from this Peebles Shire, Peebleshire.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: So I asked Gemini uh who was the wealthy one and uh and Gemini indicated that uh Baron tenant.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Uh so I have a picture of the Baron's uh manor um in Peebleshire with the car coming down the drive.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: That car.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: That car, yes.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: So uh it's I don't have documentation, but uh it's if AI says it's true, it's true, man.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 15:14Mike Marrs: So man.
- 15:19Mike Marrs: Maybe you just need to go over there.
- 15:20Mike Marrs: Just go over there, knock on the door.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: I think that's look through some family albums.
- 15:30Mike Marrs: Yes, that would work all right.
- 15:32Mike Marrs: So we we need to take another quick break here, sir.
- 15:37Mike Marrs: Bob, it's really really been good talking to you.
- 15:42Mike Marrs: I think I still think it's funny that you came up Bob Subpoena, followed by you know right after the policeman.
- 15:48Mike Marrs: So it kind of worked out kind of good.
- 15:51Mike Marrs: Yes, so it worked out great.
- 15:53Mike Marrs: Thank you for taking the time to talk to us about both of your cars over there.
- 15:56Mike Marrs: I didn't realize that both of them were over there.
- 15:58Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 15:59Mike Marrs: So I haven't had a chance to walk around yet after the broadcast.
- 16:03Mike Marrs: I'm gonna get a chance to go walk and check things out.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: Certainly.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Since uh my neighbor Lee, who has the Bianchi, um which you you interviewed him last year or a year before, uh, he lives very close.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: So I brought the LeBaron to his house yesterday and um then just drove it over.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: That's why that's how I was able to get two cars.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:30Mike Marrs: I didn't even think about that.
- 16:31Mike Marrs: Yes, because there's nobody over there with a uh double trailer setting over there, so yes.
- 16:37Mike Marrs: Unless you've got one of those school buses over there that's converted or something.
- 16:41Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 16:42Mike Marrs: All right, so um, thank you again for joining us.
- 16:46Mike Marrs: We are still at the Back to the Past car show.
