Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: Europe Correspondent on the upcoming meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Gevin Gray's, a UK europe correspondent, given good morning.
- 0:03Speaker 2: No, not in the range.
- 0:04Speaker 1: We've got Zelensky going to Turkey in hoping basically going
- 0:08Speaker 1: to sit down in the seat next to Eruwe and
- 0:10Speaker 1: I hope that Putin turns up.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yes, And I think the hope is probably quite justified
- 0:17Speaker 2: now because it was Putin that said let's talk, let's
- 0:21Speaker 2: meet face to face, let's do it in Turkey, and
- 0:24Speaker 2: so lot of mis Elensky. I think pretty hopeful that
- 0:27Speaker 2: finally he will get that meeting, but he has had
- 0:30Speaker 2: to backtrack on something he said, cease fire agreement first,
- 0:35Speaker 2: then meeting face to face, and since Donald Trump's intervention
- 0:38Speaker 2: saying you two need to sit down face to face,
- 0:41Speaker 2: that has slightly changed. So I think in that respect
- 0:45Speaker 2: perhaps he's not quite got the introduction to the meeting
- 0:48Speaker 2: that it hoped for. But yes, the US is expected
- 0:51Speaker 2: to send a high level delegation as well, and by
- 0:54Speaker 2: confirming his visit to Turkey earlier today, Zelenski clearly sought
- 0:58Speaker 2: to intensify pressure on Russia to be there and respond
- 1:03Speaker 2: and agree to a cease fire. Whether that pressure will
- 1:05Speaker 2: pay off is another matter. Of course. We've been here
- 1:08Speaker 2: and we've been waiting for this moment for a long
- 1:11Speaker 2: time without any show of a ceasefire so far.
- 1:14Speaker 1: This story is incredible. This is out of the court
- 1:17Speaker 1: of appeal, a guy who served thirty eight years in
- 1:21Speaker 1: prison for murder and his conviction's now been quashed. You've
- 1:26Speaker 1: got new DNA evidence.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. A terribly, terribly sad case which of
- 1:32Speaker 2: course left a young girl murdered a twenty one year
- 1:35Speaker 2: old bar maid back in nineteen eighty six, but has
- 1:38Speaker 2: left a man being the victim of the longest miscarriage
- 1:42Speaker 2: of justice involving a living prisoner in British legal history
- 1:46Speaker 2: fourteen thousand, one hundred and thirteen days in custody. That's
- 1:51Speaker 2: thirty eight years, seven months and twenty one days after
- 1:54Speaker 2: his arrest. Astonishing. This is because new technology allowing a
- 2:00Speaker 2: different type of DNA profiling has shown that this man
- 2:05Speaker 2: was innocent. So Peter Sullivan is his name, and he
- 2:08Speaker 2: was jailed over the killing in nineteen eighty six as
- 2:11Speaker 2: this barmaid walked home from a shift. There was talk
- 2:14Speaker 2: about him semi sort of confessing at the time, but
- 2:18Speaker 2: this might have been owing to a mental illness that
- 2:21Speaker 2: he had at the time, and this latest DNA evidence
- 2:25Speaker 2: on various substances left in and around the body shows
- 2:31Speaker 2: that it wasn't him and therefore he has now we believe,
- 2:35Speaker 2: been set free as of about three hours ago from prison. Amazingly,
- 2:41Speaker 2: he's turned around in a statement and said he isn't bitter,
- 2:44Speaker 2: He isn't really bad about this. He said, at the
- 2:47Speaker 2: heart of it, we still have a young girl who's
- 2:50Speaker 2: been murdered and we still don't know.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Who did it. God, after thirty eight years in prison
- 2:55Speaker 1: for a crime you didn't commit, that's pretty gracious. I
- 2:58Speaker 1: appreciate your time. For more from earlier edition with Ryan Bridge,
