- 1:52Speaker 5: Tonight's star, Miss Claire Trevor in The Blue Hour.
- 1:56Speaker 3: A suspense play produced, edited, and directed for Shenley by
- 2:00Speaker 3: William Spears. Just one more.
- 2:08Speaker 6: Just one more, Mr.
- 2:09Speaker 5: Paul.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Are you sure you don't know who killed Mike? Not
- 2:11Speaker 6: even a guess? Just one more. Oh, boys.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Just one more. Oh, oh, please.
- 2:17Speaker 6: Oh, all right, boys. The show's over. We're taking off now.
- 2:20Speaker 6: See you on Broadway. Goodbye. Goodbye, you've all been just grand.
- 2:25Speaker 6: Just grand, boys.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Love you all.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Bye.
- 2:28Speaker 7: Goodbye.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Bye.
- 2:30Speaker 6: Hey, stewardess. Where's my seat, honey? Well, that was that.
- 2:46Speaker 6: From then on, I had a nice quiet ride.
- 2:48Speaker 7: Into New York with nothing to do but look down
- 2:50Speaker 7: at the scenery. You never know when the break's going
- 2:53Speaker 7: to come in show business. I've been hoping for six
- 2:55Speaker 7: years now, and the best I ever did was a
- 2:57Speaker 7: one-night stand in some greasy clip joint. I know I'm
- 3:00Speaker 7: no ballerina from the Ballet Russe de Monte.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Carlo, but I can do a couple of whirls without.
- 3:05Speaker 7: Breaking my neck. And besides, I got looks. That's what
- 3:08Speaker 7: the men ask for. At least that's what Jason White
- 3:11Speaker 7: asked for. He was my only connection with high society
- 3:14Speaker 7: before he passed away. Oh, don't feel sorry for me,
- 3:18Speaker 7: because his getting bumped off was my break. They had
- 3:21Speaker 7: my legs in every paper in Chicago. That's how I
- 3:24Speaker 7: happened to come to New York. I got a contract
- 3:26Speaker 7: to dance at an extremely chic joint called the Blue Hour,
- 3:29Speaker 7: with a minimum, mind you. All the way from Chicago,
- 3:32Speaker 7: I worried no one would meet me when I.
- 3:34Speaker 6: Arrived, but I was wrong.
- 3:36Speaker 7: There were about nearly a million reporters at LaGuardia Airport...
- 3:41Speaker 7: You'd have thought I was Miss America or a Bueller
- 3:44Speaker 7: or somebody. I was really intriguing them until he showed up.
- 3:49Speaker 6: That man, Mahoney.
- 3:51Speaker 2: How about one more picture, Miss Lepore?
- 3:53Speaker 6: A little more leg? Ah, that's it. Thank you. Oh,
- 3:57Speaker 6: thank you, boys. Come around and see me at the
- 3:59Speaker 6: Blue Hour. I'll give an extra good show if I
- 4:01Speaker 6: know you're there. Go up to you, Miss Lepore.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Well, you're pretty smooth at extra good shows, aren't you?
- 4:08Speaker 6: I beg your pardon? Oh, it's you.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mahoney's the name. Alec Mahoney.
- 4:14Speaker 6: I didn't ask your name.
- 4:15Speaker 2: My, my, you're touchy.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Wouldn't you like to know?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Carry a bag for you?
- 4:21Speaker 7: I can afford a porter.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Oh, I'd like to speak to you.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Call me up sometime.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Who killed Jason White?
- 4:27Speaker 6: Cop or reporter?
- 4:29Speaker 4: Why?
- 4:30Speaker 2: You got two different answers?
- 4:31Speaker 7: Look, Mahoney, if you could read, you'd know from the
- 4:33Speaker 7: papers I had nothing to do with Jason White's death.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I never read the papers, honey. I'm a reporter.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Well, I already gave my interview. Now, leave me alone, Mahoney.
- 4:41Speaker 6: I went through all this with the Chicago police.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, I know.
- 4:44Speaker 6: Well, then why the sudden interest?
- 4:45Speaker 2: Because the whole thing smelled.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Move, Mahoney. You're beginning to bore me.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Why were you afraid to tell the police you were
- 4:52Speaker 2: at Jason White's apartment the night he was killed?
- 4:54Speaker 6: What are we playing? 20 questions?
- 4:57Speaker 2: No. No, no, no. Just hunches, honey.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Hunches, hmm?
- 5:00Speaker 7: Look, Mahoney, Jason White was a nice guy. He liked me,
- 5:03Speaker 7: I liked his money. We got along swell as long
- 5:06Speaker 7: as he was spending it on me.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Did you kill him because he stopped spending it?
- 5:09Speaker 7: If that's another hunch, get out of my way before I.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Haul off on you.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Oh, now look at me.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Look, there's just two things you can do for me.
- 5:16Speaker 6: Drop dead.
- 5:16Speaker 7: Drop dead.
- 5:25Speaker 6: I didn't feel so good after parting with my homie.
- 5:28Speaker 6: He made me feel uneasy, as if he knew something important.
- 5:32Speaker 6: He seemed awfully nosy about who killed Jason White.
- 5:35Speaker 7: He sure would have made a good lawyer. Besides, he
- 5:38Speaker 7: wasn't half bad looking. Just the same, I hoped I'd
- 5:41Speaker 7: never see him again. I finally got a cab and
- 5:43Speaker 7: decided to go straight over to the Blue Hour. Come
- 5:46Speaker 7: to think of it, they didn't have anyone meet me
- 5:48Speaker 7: at the airport. They've got some nerve treating their star
- 5:52Speaker 7: attraction that way.
- 5:53Speaker 6: I'd tell them a thing or two. I couldn't believe
- 5:57Speaker 6: my eyes when I took a gander at the blue hour.
- 6:00Speaker 6: It was the most beautiful place I ever saw. Extremely chic.
- 6:05Speaker 6: The walls and ceilings were covered with real satin, and
- 6:08Speaker 6: the floors were so cleanly glistened.
- 6:10Speaker 7: There were enough mirrors around to powder 4,000 noses at
- 6:13Speaker 7: the same time. And there was an honest-to-goodness band, ten pieces.
- 6:19Speaker 7: They were rehearsing as I entered. Oh, anybody would look
- 6:22Speaker 7: good on that stage with that music. And I wasn't
- 6:25Speaker 7: going to.
- 6:26Speaker 6: Be the exception.
- 6:27Speaker 7: I was in such a daze, I didn't see him
- 6:29Speaker 7: come alongside of me. But somehow he had the knack
- 6:32Speaker 7: of making you feel his presence.
- 6:34Speaker 8: Miss LaPaul?
- 6:35Speaker 6: Oh, yeah. How did you know?
- 6:37Speaker 8: You're quite famous these days. I'm Anthony Licata.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Pleased to meet you, Mr. Licata. I love your joint.
- 6:44Speaker 6: I mean, place. Extremely chic. I know I'm going to
- 6:48Speaker 6: like working here.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I hope so.
- 6:51Speaker 8: Follow me, Miss LaPaul.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Oh, that band is certainly out of this world.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I'm glad you like it. This way, Miss Lepore.
- 6:59Speaker 6: I've never seen anything like it.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Why don't you sit down?
- 7:02Speaker 6: Thanks, I could use a seat. Those reporters gave me
- 7:06Speaker 6: a good going over this morning.
- 7:07Speaker 2: What'd you tell them?
- 7:08Speaker 7: Oh, the usual stuff, like how many offers I had,
- 7:10Speaker 7: and I picked your club because it was the best
- 7:12Speaker 7: in town, and I gave them a couple of good shots.
- 7:14Speaker 8: Did you tell them anything about Jason White?
- 7:16Speaker 6: Well, they were the usual questions.
- 7:18Speaker 2: What usual questions?
- 7:19Speaker 6: Like, did I love him? Do I miss him? Do
- 7:22Speaker 6: I have any idea who killed him?
- 7:24Speaker 4: Do you?
- 7:25Speaker 7: No.
- 7:26Speaker 6: Look, Mr. Licata, I want to be a dancer, not
- 7:29Speaker 6: an information, please.
- 7:30Speaker 8: I'm sorry, Miss LaPaule, but I'm very interested in crime.
- 7:34Speaker 8: Unsolved crimes.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Just a hobby. Cigarette?
- 7:39Speaker 6: Oh, thank you. When do I start working, Mr. Licata?
- 7:43Speaker 8: You're on salary already.
- 7:45Speaker 6: Gee, thank you.
- 7:46Speaker 7: I could start rehearsing right away. I'd be ready by
- 7:48Speaker 7: tomorrow night.
- 7:49Speaker 8: Well, you must be very tired from the ordeal of
- 7:52Speaker 8: everything that happened in Chicago. You take a two-week rest.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Then we're going to see.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Two weeks? Well, I'll be deader than a mackerel by then.
- 8:01Speaker 7: Mr.
- 8:02Speaker 6: Licata, I'm hot as a firecracker now. How long do
- 8:05Speaker 6: you think this publicity can last?
- 8:07Speaker 8: I'm sorry, Miss LaPaul. I don't think it's possible.
- 8:10Speaker 6: You don't think it's possible? Well, I like that. I've
- 8:14Speaker 6: waited six years for this kind of a chance, and
- 8:16Speaker 6: I'm not going to sit on my.
- 8:17Speaker 7: I'm not going to just sit and watch it fizzle out.
- 8:19Speaker 8: Well, unfortunately, Miss LaPaul, you must be satisfied with the arrangement.
- 8:23Speaker 6: Satisfied my foot. I'll get a job somewhere else.
- 8:25Speaker 8: You're forgetting one small detail, Miss LaPaul. You're on the
- 8:28Speaker 8: contract to me. I'm going to see that you stay there.
- 8:31Speaker 6: Well, I don't get it. You chase me around in
- 8:33Speaker 6: Chicago as if I was studded with diamonds.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Well, you are very valuable.
- 8:37Speaker 6: What's the game, Licata?
- 8:39Speaker 8: Don't you know?
- 8:41Speaker 9: No, I don't know.
- 8:43Speaker 8: What a shame, Miss Lapo. I'm sure that before you're
- 8:47Speaker 8: finished here, you'll play the game very well.
- 8:58Speaker 6: I didn't like it. I didn't like it at all.
- 9:01Speaker 7: Because it didn't take a Sam Spade to figure out
- 9:04Speaker 7: that the game he was playing had something to do
- 9:06Speaker 7: with a guy I knew called Jason White.
- 9:09Speaker 6: And Jason White was.
- 9:11Speaker 9: was murdered.

- 11:06Speaker 10: Hour I may have felt uneasy when I left Mahoney,
- 11:19Speaker 10: but I was downright scared when I.
- 11:21Speaker 7: Left Anthony Licata's office. I must be a real square.
- 11:25Speaker 7: Everybody seems to be talking riddles. I know there's something
- 11:28Speaker 7: cooking that just concerns me, but I'll be darned if
- 11:31Speaker 7: I know what. Mr.
- 11:33Speaker 6: Licata had an apartment for me. In fact, he had
- 11:36Speaker 6: me driven there.
- 11:36Speaker 7: I wasn't blind enough to miss the stooge he planted
- 11:39Speaker 7: outside my door. I was in a fine fix. Lois
- 11:43Speaker 7: LaPaul was going to burn up the big city stuck in.
- 11:46Speaker 6: An apartment with a bodyguard.
- 11:48Speaker 7: The sad part of it all was I didn't know
- 11:50Speaker 7: a soul to turn to for help, except.
- 11:53Speaker 6: Except... No.
- 11:55Speaker 7: No, it wasn't possible. He wouldn't help me. So, there
- 12:00Speaker 7: was nothing for me to do but sit there and eat.
- 12:07Speaker 6: Who is it?
- 12:08Speaker 2: I'm a homie.
- 12:09Speaker 6: Oh....
- 12:12Speaker 2: Hello there, beautiful.
- 12:14Speaker 6: Shut up and come in.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Well, I'm honored, Miss Lepore. Tell me, is this to
- 12:20Speaker 2: be a social visit or.
- 12:22Speaker 6: I'm scared. I need help.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Well, your attitude seems to have changed.
- 12:26Speaker 6: Did you see a man outside?
- 12:28Speaker 2: An autograph hunter?
- 12:29Speaker 6: More like a head hunter. He's planted there to watch me.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Who planted him?
- 12:34Speaker 6: Anthony Licata of the Blue Owl.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Licata, huh?
- 12:39Speaker 2: Well, this is developing faster than I figured. He sure
- 12:42Speaker 2: is impatient.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Nuts, he's impatient.
- 12:44Speaker 7: He's making me sit around doing nothing for two weeks.
- 12:47Speaker 6: It's some game we're playing. Only I don't like games,
- 12:50Speaker 6: and I'm scared.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Well, well, you do have human instincts.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Oh, Mahoney, what's going on? Why am I involved?
- 12:59Speaker 2: Close the faucet on those crocodile tears, honey.
- 13:01Speaker 6: Why don't you believe me?
- 13:02Speaker 2: Because you're not playing square with me.
- 13:04Speaker 6: What do you want from me, Mahoney?
- 13:07Speaker 2: The truth.
- 13:08Speaker 6: Oh, I.
- 13:08Speaker 2: You were in Jason White's apartment the night he was killed.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Weren't you?
- 13:15Speaker 6: Yes, I was.
- 13:17Speaker 2: What were you doing there?
- 13:18Speaker 6: I went to see him. Oh.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Oh, just like that, huh?
- 13:22Speaker 6: He called me and asked me to come right up.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Do you always run when a man asks you to
- 13:26Speaker 2: come up to his apartment?
- 13:28Speaker 6: He sounded frightened.
- 13:29Speaker 7: He told me to hurry. I grabbed a taxi and
- 13:32Speaker 7: got there as fast as I could. I knocked several times,
- 13:35Speaker 7: but there was no answer, so... I walked in. Every
- 13:39Speaker 7: light in the place was lit. Every chair, table, and
- 13:42Speaker 7: drawer was upset. You know that from the newspaper stories.
- 13:47Speaker 7: Jason was sitting in the one and only chair left upright.
- 13:50Speaker 7: I remember he smiled as I walked in.
- 13:55Speaker 2: You got here very quickly, my dear. Thank you. Jason,
- 14:00Speaker 2: what happened?
- 14:01Speaker 6: What's been going on here? Oh, forget about that.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Come over here beside me.
- 14:06Speaker 6: I don't understand this.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Never mind, my dear. It's unimportant. Listen to me carefully.
- 14:12Speaker 6: You sound sick. What's the matter? Nothing, my dear.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Don't worry. Here, take this.
- 14:20Speaker 6: It's a bottle of perfume.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yes, I've had it for you for a long time.
- 14:25Speaker 2: But like most men, I forgot to give it to you.
- 14:29Speaker 7: Take it now.
- 14:30Speaker 6: You mean you had me rush all the way up
- 14:31Speaker 6: here for this? What's the gag?
- 14:33Speaker 8: Jason....
- 14:35Speaker 6: Jason, you're bleeding. You've been hurt. I'll call a doctor.
- 14:39Speaker 2: No, Lois, please don't do that. I'd rather have it
- 14:43Speaker 2: this way.
- 14:43Speaker 6: Who did it, Jason?
- 14:45Speaker 2: I don't know. Lois promised me one thing.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Don't open that bottle of perfume until I catch and
- 14:52Speaker 3: convict whoever attacked me.
- 14:55Speaker 2: If you do, your life will be in danger.
- 14:57Speaker 6: I promised, Jason. You'd better go now.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Forget... If you were ever here tonight... God bless you,
- 15:08Speaker 2: my dear.
- 15:08Speaker 7: And thank you. Thank you for.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Everything.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Jason. Jason.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Jason!
- 15:30Speaker 7: And that's exactly what happened, Mahoney, I swear.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Do you still have that bottle of perfume?
- 15:34Speaker 6: Of course I have.
- 15:35Speaker 2: May I see it?
- 15:36Speaker 6: Thinking of using it?
- 15:38Speaker 2: Perhaps.
- 15:39Speaker 6: Well, I keep it in my makeup kit. Here.
- 15:45Speaker 7: Wow.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Very interesting.
- 15:48Speaker 6: What's very interesting?
- 15:49Speaker 2: Did you notice the name of this perfume?
- 15:51Speaker 6: Yeah, it's in French. I have a hard enough time
- 15:53Speaker 6: with my English.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Le Bleu.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Huh?
- 15:55Speaker 6: Sounds like your tongue got stuck.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Oh, I get by, honey, I get by. Blue means
- 16:00Speaker 2: the hour, and blue means blue. The hour blue, or
- 16:03Speaker 2: better known as the blue hour.
- 16:04Speaker 6: The blue hour? That's the same name as the nightclub.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Well, well, well, well, you catch on fast, don't you?
- 16:09Speaker 2: And here's something else for you to mull over. Jason
- 16:12Speaker 2: White bought a diamond in Antwerp in 1929 called the
- 16:14Speaker 2: blue hour. It was called that because it was a
- 16:16Speaker 2: perfect blue-white stone worth about a half a million bucks.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Holy mackerel.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Now, do you know what's in this bottle?
- 16:21Speaker 6: Uh, perfume?
- 16:22Speaker 2: If you're telling the truth, honey, the blue hour diamond
- 16:25Speaker 2: is floating around in there.
- 16:26Speaker 6: You mean 500 grand worth of... Oh, brother.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Well, we'll find out in just a minute. No, no, don't.
- 16:34Speaker 6: I told you what Jason said about my life being
- 16:36Speaker 6: in danger. If that's open before his murderer is convicted.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Sugarface, your life is already in danger. Well, cross your fingers.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Here goes.
- 16:44Speaker 6: Oh, Mahoney.
- 16:51Speaker 9: Oh, brother.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Look at that thing dazzle.
- 16:54Speaker 6: Oh, gee, it's beautiful.
- 16:58Speaker 2: So that's the blue hour diamond.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Boy, on my finger would that look extremely chic.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Look, baby. Look, if you want to live to enjoy it,
- 17:07Speaker 2: we've got to beat the early bird to the worm. Now, here.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Sit down here. You've got a full evening in front
- 17:12Speaker 2: of you, honey. Now, here. Here's what you're going to do.
- 17:22Speaker 7: Alec wasn't kidding when he said we had a full
- 17:24Speaker 7: evening in front of us. He had a plan, and
- 17:27Speaker 7: I had to memorize it. I was going to do
- 17:29Speaker 7: some acting. And here I come to New York to
- 17:31Speaker 7: be a dancer. I was so mixed up with all
- 17:34Speaker 7: that happened, I wasn't sure of anything, except that I
- 17:37Speaker 7: fell in love with Alec Mahoney. He didn't know it yet,
- 17:41Speaker 7: but as soon as things were settled.
- 17:44Speaker 6: I was going to let him know. Meanwhile, I felt
- 17:46Speaker 6: that Mahoney was staging a play and I was his
- 17:49Speaker 6: leading lady.
- 17:50Speaker 7: He said things, had me repeat them till I thought
- 17:52Speaker 7: I'd scream, but he assured me one mistake would be fatal.
- 17:57Speaker 7: He then picked out my chicest evening gown and had
- 17:59Speaker 7: me put it on. I thought I detected a gleam
- 18:02Speaker 7: in his eye as I paraded before him, but he
- 18:04Speaker 7: pulled himself together, gave me a quick pat on the
- 18:07Speaker 7: shoulder and left. I waited ten minutes by the clock.
- 18:11Speaker 7: We still had Lakata's fair-haired boy waiting outside. I then
- 18:15Speaker 7: opened the door noisily and stepped out.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Hey, you going someplace?
- 18:20Speaker 7: Look, stupid, I'm going down to the Blue Hour. If
- 18:22Speaker 7: you want to come along, just fall.
- 18:23Speaker 6: In line behind teacher. Next time.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Coming.
- 18:40Speaker 6: Good evening, Mr. Licata.
- 18:42Speaker 8: What are you doing here?
- 18:43Speaker 6: I came to see you.
- 18:44Speaker 8: Was there something you didn't understand this afternoon?
- 18:47Speaker 6: On the contrary. It was all too clear. Aren't you
- 18:51Speaker 6: going to ask me to sit down? Tony? Sit down.
- 18:56Speaker 8: Don't call me Tony. My name's Anthony.
- 18:58Speaker 6: I'm sorry, Anthony.
- 19:02Speaker 2: You look pretty good for a second, Rita.
- 19:04Speaker 6: See, I'm flattered. I still don't know why you're here.
- 19:08Speaker 6: I came to play the games.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I see.
- 19:13Speaker 8: What caused this sudden change of mind?
- 19:15Speaker 6: It's a woman's prerogative, isn't it?
- 19:19Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 19:19Speaker 7: You see, I know something about you, and I think
- 19:23Speaker 7: you've guessed something about me.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Stop beating around the bush.
- 19:27Speaker 6: All right, Anthony. I know you killed Jason White.
- 19:32Speaker 8: For a dumb babe, you think you know an awful lot.
- 19:35Speaker 6: I was in the room when you killed Jason.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Can you prove it?
- 19:39Speaker 6: If I tried hard enough, I might be able to.
- 19:42Speaker 6: But that's not why I'm here.
- 19:43Speaker 8: Then what did cause this social visit?
- 19:48Speaker 6: I think you know. I have the blue eyes. diamond
- 19:51Speaker 6: I have Put your eyes back in your head, Anthony.
- 19:56Speaker 8: So you do have it, huh?
- 19:57Speaker 6: Up to this point, you only thought I had it
- 20:00Speaker 6: Isn't that right?
- 20:01Speaker 2: What's the deal?
- 20:02Speaker 7: I'll make it short and simple I need money I
- 20:05Speaker 7: couldn't possibly pass that rock You know your way around
- 20:09Speaker 7: Pass it, split 50-50, and I'll forget I ever saw
- 20:13Speaker 7: you in Jason's apartment.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I never said I was there.
- 20:16Speaker 6: So you didn't.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Give me the diamond.
- 20:18Speaker 6: Don't be stupid. I never carry it around. It's too heavy.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Where is it?
- 20:22Speaker 7: Come to my apartment in about half an hour and
- 20:26Speaker 7: come yourself, Anthony.
- 20:28Speaker 6: Leave that Harry A. poem. If there's any funny business,
- 20:31Speaker 6: you'll never get it.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I'll be there. I'll own.
- 20:34Speaker 7: I'm sure you'll do as I say, Anthony, because that
- 20:37Speaker 7: diamond must mean.
- 20:38Speaker 6: A lot to you. After all, you committed murder for it.
- 20:50Speaker 7: When I left the Carter's office, the taxi back to
- 20:52Speaker 7: my apartment felt like a Turkish bath. But so far,
- 20:56Speaker 7: everything went exactly as Mahoney said it would. He would
- 20:59Speaker 7: have been proud of me. I didn't muff a line.
- 21:03Speaker 6: Now, the worst that could happen to me was getting killed.
- 21:07Speaker 6: The prospect of this didn't appeal at all, and.
- 21:09Speaker 7: Besides, it took me 25 years to find a guy
- 21:12Speaker 7: like Mahoney. I wanted to stay around and enjoy him.
- 21:16Speaker 7: Once I got back to my apartment, I had nothing
- 21:18Speaker 7: to do but wait for Lakata. That's like waiting for
- 21:21Speaker 7: poison to take effect. I turned on every light and
- 21:25Speaker 7: the radio.
- 21:26Speaker 6: I figured the soft music would help my nerves relax.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It didn't.
- 21:31Speaker 6: I smoked 16 cigarettes. I know, I counted them. I
- 21:35Speaker 6: was sitting there trying to keep my mind, such as
- 21:37Speaker 6: it is, off of unpleasant things, and then... Then I
- 21:41Speaker 6: heard it. It was the window opening. Very softly in
- 21:46Speaker 6: my bedroom. Somebody had come up the fire escape into
- 21:49Speaker 6: my room.
- 21:50Speaker 7: I should have known that Mercado wouldn't take a chance
- 21:52Speaker 7: and come to see me alone like I told him.
- 21:54Speaker 6: He had one of his gorillas in my other room
- 21:56Speaker 6: to make sure that I'd be in his power.
- 21:57Speaker 7: This apparently had not occurred to Mahoney.
- 22:00Speaker 6: Who thought he was so smart. I got up from
- 22:03Speaker 6: the couch and stood there listening.
- 22:06Speaker 7: The guy in there was coming closer because I heard
- 22:08Speaker 7: him knock my sewing basket over.
- 22:10Speaker 6: I looked around for an effective weapon. Then I spotted it.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Just the thing. My big makeup case.
- 22:17Speaker 7: I picked it up, hefted it, and I quietly kicked
- 22:21Speaker 7: off my shoes and stole over to the bedroom doorway.
- 22:24Speaker 7: I leaned back against the wall out of sight as
- 22:26Speaker 7: the door started to open. I could see that big
- 22:29Speaker 7: gorilla standing there with a gun in the dark with
- 22:31Speaker 7: his hat pulled down over his face.
- 22:33Speaker 6: Then he started to push his face out into the room.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Now look.
- 22:36Speaker 7: He fell back into the bedroom and I shut the
- 22:41Speaker 7: door and stood there.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Oh, Mahoney, wherever you are, don't fail me now. Who
- 22:51Speaker 6: is it?
- 22:51Speaker 2: La Cara. La Cara.
- 22:53Speaker 6: Oh, come in, Anthony. I'm glad to see your prompt.
- 22:57Speaker 6: It's a sign of good upbringing.
- 22:58Speaker 8: You've got to play that radio.
- 23:01Speaker 6: Oh, I'm sorry. Shouldn't keep such late hours, Anthony. It's
- 23:05Speaker 6: making you nervous.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Where's the diamond?
- 23:08Speaker 6: Gee, you're in a hurry. Got a date?
- 23:09Speaker 2: I've got to get back to the club.
- 23:11Speaker 6: All right, Anthony.
- 23:12Speaker 7: But remember, I don't care what you do with the diamond.
- 23:15Speaker 7: I just want 250 grand.
- 23:17Speaker 6: My share. Is that clear?
- 23:19Speaker 2: You'll get your share.
- 23:20Speaker 7: Good.
- 23:21Speaker 6: Here's the diamond. Had it in my handbag all evening.
- 23:24Speaker 8: Oh, the blue hour.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I saw it only once.
- 23:30Speaker 8: But I knew then that someday I'd have to have that.
- 23:33Speaker 6: You saw it in Antwerp in 1929. Isn't that right, Anthony?
- 23:36Speaker 2: How do you know?
- 23:38Speaker 6: I have a crystal ball.
- 23:39Speaker 8: You know too much.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Not any more than you do now, Anthony.
- 23:42Speaker 8: What was that reporter Mahoney doing here this evening?
- 23:44Speaker 6: Mahoney? I don't recall.
- 23:46Speaker 2: My man told me he was here.
- 23:48Speaker 6: Oh, oh, yeah, yeah. He came for an exclusive interview
- 23:51Speaker 6: of my life.
- 23:52Speaker 8: Did he tell you it was going to end tonight?
- 23:55Speaker 6: No.
- 23:56Speaker 8: You think for one minute I was going to let
- 23:58Speaker 8: you run loose knowing what you do about me? I
- 24:01Speaker 8: still don't know how you could have been in that
- 24:02Speaker 8: apartment when I had to kill Jason.
- 24:04Speaker 6: So you did kill him. Mahoney was right.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Oh, Mahoney. I thought so.
- 24:09Speaker 8: Only don't count on him, sister, because my boys are
- 24:12Speaker 8: out looking for him now.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Anthony, let's talk this over, huh? You can keep the diamond.
- 24:19Speaker 6: It's yours.
- 24:20Speaker 8: You should have stuck to those clip joints back in Chicago.
- 24:23Speaker 8: That's where you belong.
- 24:23Speaker 6: No.
- 24:29Speaker 7: No!
- 24:30Speaker 2: Are you all right? It's me, Mahoney.
- 24:32Speaker 6: Mahoney.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Are you all right, beautiful? Are you all right?
- 24:35Speaker 6: I'm alive. Oh, good.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Well, what did you have to hit me on the
- 24:39Speaker 2: head for, you big dope?
- 24:40Speaker 6: Was that you?
- 24:41Speaker 2: You know, I almost didn't make it.
- 24:43Speaker 7: Well, I never would have spoken to you again, Mahoney.
- 24:45Speaker 7: In fact, I never would have spoken to anybody.
- 24:48Speaker 6: Again, would I?
- 24:49Speaker 2: Oh, you're going to be all right now, honey.
- 24:51Speaker 6: I must have lost four pounds tonight.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Well, I never heard a woman complain about that before.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Come on. Come on, get up, honey. You're all right.
- 25:00Speaker 2: You're not hurt. Hey, what's wrong? Nothing.
- 25:03Speaker 6: I'm just saying my prayers.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Okay, Miss Lepore, would you mind facing the sun just
- 25:20Speaker 3: a little more.
- 25:20Speaker 2: So we can see the sparkle? Yeah, that's it. Hey,
- 25:22Speaker 2: are you going to collect the reward for turning up
- 25:24Speaker 2: White's killer? Yeah, Miss Lepore, what about that?
- 25:27Speaker 6: Well, I didn't turn him up. Somebody else did. Yeah,
- 25:30Speaker 6: not the way I heard it.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Well, why are you going back to Chicago all of
- 25:33Speaker 2: a sudden?
- 25:33Speaker 6: Oh, that's all, boys. I'm sorry.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Goodbye, Miss Lepore.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Bye.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Bye.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Well, now you're really famous, aren't you?
- 25:47Speaker 7: Mahoney, I thought when I didn't hear from you, I thought.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Well, I've been busy. You didn't think I was going
- 25:55Speaker 2: to let you run out on me, did you?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Oh, that.
- 25:59Speaker 6: I never really thought about it one way or the other.
- 26:02Speaker 2: No?
- 26:02Speaker 7: No, I'm still extremely angry with you, as you may
- 26:06Speaker 7: well imagine.
- 26:08Speaker 6: You haven't even bothered to explain.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Well, honey, it was this way. Licata was with Jason
- 26:13Speaker 2: White on his trip to Antwerp, and he saw Jason
- 26:16Speaker 2: buy the Blue Hour Diamond. He offered him all sorts
- 26:18Speaker 2: of dough for it, but he wouldn't sell. And Licata
- 26:21Speaker 2: never got over it.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Holy mackerel. Well, he's over it now.
- 26:27Speaker 7: There's just one thing I want to know from you, Mahoney.
- 26:29Speaker 7: How did you know Licata killed Jason White?
- 26:31Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't.
- 26:33Speaker 6: You didn't? You... You mean everything I did. Risking my life.
- 26:38Speaker 7: Playing games with a maniac with a buzzer all because
- 26:40Speaker 7: you had a hunch.
- 26:41Speaker 2: That's right, baby. Never go wrong, Mahoney.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Oh!
- 26:46Speaker 2: Well, uh... What are you gonna do now, beautiful? You're
- 26:50Speaker 2: a rich woman now, you know.
- 26:52Speaker 6: How do you speak it?
- 26:53Speaker 2: Well, the diamond legally belongs to you. I think it
- 26:55Speaker 2: would hold up in court.
- 26:56Speaker 7: Well, I know one thing for sure. I'm giving up
- 26:59Speaker 7: the ballet. And, uh, for two things, um... I think
- 27:04Speaker 7: I'll get married. Oh.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Society, I suppose.
- 27:09Speaker 6: Holy mackerel, you're a big dope, Mahoney. It takes a
- 27:13Speaker 6: lot of courage for a girl to do what I'm
- 27:15Speaker 6: about to do. Will you marry me?
- 27:20Speaker 7: Oh.
- 27:22Speaker 2: I suppose so.
- 27:23Speaker 8: Oh.
