- 1:09Speaker 3: on your radio as Mississippi State gets ready after another
- 1:12Speaker 3: tough weekend to head to Texas this weekend. David, welcome in, sir.
- 1:15Speaker 3: How are you?
- 1:16Speaker 1: It's Monday. Do you know who your quarterbacks are? I
- 1:19Speaker 1: guess is the best way to put it. After this
- 1:22Speaker 1: morning's press conference with Jeff Levy, he will not come
- 1:27Speaker 1: out and say it and would only mention that the
- 1:33Speaker 1: next 48 hours will be critical about the status of
- 1:36Speaker 1: Camario Taylor. But I have a hard time believing Camario
- 1:40Speaker 1: plays this weekend at Texas. So now it comes down
- 1:43Speaker 1: to do they run Billy Puckett back out there? Do
- 1:46Speaker 1: they get A.J. Swan, his first action, not just of
- 1:49Speaker 1: the season, but at Mississippi State, period? Some combination of both,
- 1:53Speaker 1: or is there any sort of realistic idea that Taylor
- 1:56Speaker 1: could play limited snaps at Texas? And by the way,
- 1:59Speaker 1: I had to look it up to make sure for myself,
- 2:01Speaker 1: but Texas has artificial turf, which is doubly not good
- 2:06Speaker 1: on a turf-toe-foot situation that he's dealing with. So just
- 2:10Speaker 1: throw that into your calculations as well.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Yeah, David, you know, there's a pain tolerance, at least
- 2:15Speaker 3: that's what the medical people say that comes with turf toe.
- 2:17Speaker 3: And that doesn't mean that, you know, Kamara Taylor is
- 2:19Speaker 3: mentally or physically weak. I mean, it's just, can you,
- 2:23Speaker 3: can your body, you know, how much pain can your
- 2:25Speaker 3: body stand on that? And, you know, B and I
- 2:27Speaker 3: were talking about, you know, Brock Purdy in the NFL,
- 2:30Speaker 3: he had a couple of years ago or two, a
- 2:32Speaker 3: year ago or two years ago, he had this and
- 2:35Speaker 3: was out a couple of weeks, tried it, had to
- 2:36Speaker 3: come back off the field. He was out four weeks.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I mean, this is a situation that I don't, you know,
- 2:41Speaker 3: envy Jeff Levy being in because Kamara Taylor may be
- 2:43Speaker 3: done the rest of the year. I mean, he may
- 2:45Speaker 3: come back, you know, in two weeks. We don't know.
- 2:47Speaker 3: He's got to find an answer at quarterback. And, you know,
- 2:50Speaker 3: I don't know that it's Billy Puckett. And we'll see
- 2:52Speaker 3: if it's A.J. Swan. But he's got to do something
- 2:55Speaker 3: here because this offense has gone, I mean, really just
- 2:58Speaker 3: kaput the last two weeks.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Well, trying to wrap it up on Taylor as of today,
- 3:05Speaker 1: in retrospect, of course, he shouldn't have played Saturday. But
- 3:09Speaker 1: you couldn't know it until he tried to play. I'm
- 3:11Speaker 1: not getting on Levy. for playing him because I guarantee
- 3:15Speaker 1: that Taylor was practically demanding he be allowed to play.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And if he did, that means that the medical staff
- 3:21Speaker 1: signed off and said he's not going to make it
- 3:23Speaker 1: any worse. Well, but he did. And you could tell
- 3:28Speaker 1: on the third series, it was eerily similar to the
- 3:30Speaker 1: play which told you, you know, that he wasn't himself
- 3:33Speaker 1: against Alabama when he had a scramble to the right, cut,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and all of a sudden stumbled. it was almost the
- 3:39Speaker 1: same identical thing this past weekend. He was scrambling on
- 3:42Speaker 1: his last play, opening to his right, cut, and stumbled.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And that just means that no matter how much pain
- 3:49Speaker 1: you can tolerate, when you slam that foot down, you're
- 3:53Speaker 1: going to react. Yes, he has the arm strength to
- 3:56Speaker 1: make things happen in a pocket if he's allowed to
- 3:58Speaker 1: set up, but he's just not going to be allowed
- 4:01Speaker 1: to set up. That's just all it comes down to.
- 4:05Speaker 1: And defenses know it. Now, I'll say this for Oklahoma.
- 4:09Speaker 1: They didn't do a lot of blitzing. Once Camario was
- 4:11Speaker 1: out of the game, he took three sacks there in
- 4:13Speaker 1: his three series. They just kind of played it straight
- 4:17Speaker 1: and only sacked Puckett once, but there was plenty of pressure.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So I think that stat is kind of misleading from Saturday. Texas,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I didn't get to watch all the game with Ole Miss,
- 4:27Speaker 1: but I've seen enough games they've played this year. When
- 4:29Speaker 1: they want to dial up the pressure on defense, they
- 4:31Speaker 1: can absolutely do it with their personnel. So now you
- 4:34Speaker 1: just cannot have an immobile quarterback back there unless he's
- 4:38Speaker 1: somebody who can get the ball out really quick, and
- 4:41Speaker 1: that is not Billy Puck's strength.
- 4:43Speaker 3: David Murray, make sure to get him on X, and,
- 4:45Speaker 3: of course, you can check him out at jeanspage247sports. com, Monday
- 4:49Speaker 3: edition of the program. So, David, where should Mississippi State
- 4:54Speaker 3: fans be with this? Because there's so much frustration. You know,
- 4:58Speaker 3: I'm not one that ever cheers for a coach to
- 5:00Speaker 3: be fired. I know there's the fringe fans that say
- 5:03Speaker 3: he needs to go. talking about Jeff Levy, I look
- 5:05Speaker 3: at the situation and say, hey, look, this is going
- 5:07Speaker 3: on around the country. This is not a pass. I mean,
- 5:09Speaker 3: you look at Ohio State, they lost a quarterback. Oregon
- 5:11Speaker 3: lost a quarterback. They're definitely not as good on the
- 5:14Speaker 3: second or third team, you know, down the bench as
- 5:17Speaker 3: they were at one. State is not as good, you know,
- 5:20Speaker 3: down the bench as well. You look at Fluff Bothwell.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I mean, he had 111 yards on 17 carries, but
- 5:25Speaker 3: he is not healthy. I mean, Ole Miss lost their
- 5:27Speaker 3: running back, Kewon Lacy. This is going on around college football,
- 5:30Speaker 3: and I think what we're seeing is Even though these
- 5:33Speaker 3: rosters are so expensive and they're going to continue to climb,
- 5:36Speaker 3: there's just not enough money for depth. And you better
- 5:38Speaker 3: hang on because, I mean, odds of you losing somebody
- 5:41Speaker 3: are pretty high. And if you lose a bunch of somebodies,
- 5:44Speaker 3: then you're not anywhere where you thought you were.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Just a minute. I'm chasing a dog who's trying to
- 5:51Speaker 1: run away. But Nellie, get back here.
- 5:54Speaker 3: That's all right.
- 5:55Speaker 1: She scooted out the door when I shouldn't have opened there.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And now we're holding up traffic as a result. The situation,
- 6:03Speaker 1: of course, being that I think you've got to go
- 6:06Speaker 1: with an SEC veteran like Swan this weekend. And there's
- 6:11Speaker 1: been the frustration, of course, he hasn't played yet. A
- 6:14Speaker 1: lot of that's simply the fact that he's had repeated
- 6:17Speaker 1: ankle issues since he got here in spring. He's a
- 6:25Speaker 1: dadgum dog. He does own the place, doesn't he? Traffic stopping.
- 6:30Speaker 1: This is awesome radio.
- 6:31Speaker 3: No, it really is. No, it really is.
- 6:35Speaker 2: No.
- 6:36Speaker 1: He's had an ankle issue that was aggravated in some ways.
- 6:39Speaker 1: One of those guys, he either puts his foot in
- 6:41Speaker 1: the wrong place for somebody to step on it or whatever.
- 6:43Speaker 1: But he's cleared to go now, and I think State's
- 6:46Speaker 1: got to ride him. I think he's got the mental toughness.
- 6:50Speaker 1: He's been at Vanderbilt, LSU, Appalachian State. He's seen everything.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I think you run him out there and he's just
- 6:56Speaker 1: not going to be too rattled by the situation in Texas. Puckett,
- 7:01Speaker 1: bless him, he's been asked to do something that no
- 7:03Speaker 1: freshman should be asked to do. But the fumble he had,
- 7:06Speaker 1: the interception he threw, I just don't think it's wise
- 7:12Speaker 1: to run him back out there in that situation. But
- 7:15Speaker 1: it's going to be a situation all year, I mean
- 7:17Speaker 1: all season. Well, I guess I could go ahead and
- 7:19Speaker 1: say all season. What do you do? Because this offense
- 7:23Speaker 1: was built around Camario Taylor. The coaches always say, whatever
- 7:27Speaker 1: they are, you've got to execute and run the system.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I get it. But you have to adapt to what
- 7:34Speaker 1: you have at the quarterback position more than anything. So
- 7:37Speaker 1: this is where we see Jeff Levy and staff have
- 7:39Speaker 1: to make some adjustments. What you can do. You still
- 7:42Speaker 1: got the runners. You still got the receivers. The same
- 7:44Speaker 1: offensive line. It's all the man receiving the snap. But
- 7:48Speaker 1: you've got to play to his strengths, whatever they are.
- 7:51Speaker 3: David, Doug.
- 7:53Speaker 2: A.J.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Swan, what do we know as far as his availability?
- 7:56Speaker 3: This guy was a backup to Diego Pavia at Vanderbilt, obviously.
- 8:00Speaker 3: He's got SEC experience. He has played SEC football. Where
- 8:05Speaker 3: he is in his recovery with Mississippi State?
- 8:08Speaker 1: I think he's fine to go. He was dressed out.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I saw him in the third quarter doing some passing
- 8:13Speaker 1: on the sideline, just in case. And by the way,
- 8:16Speaker 1: another thing, too, State had to leave the starting offensive
- 8:19Speaker 1: line in there even after it was just about a
- 8:21Speaker 1: lost cause. because you couldn't afford to have Billy Bucket
- 8:24Speaker 1: go down. So you're doubly risking a lot of your
- 8:28Speaker 1: starters in a situation like that. You see the bind
- 8:31Speaker 1: that it's in. I think Swan will be able to
- 8:33Speaker 1: go out there, be competent. The main thing, and this
- 8:37Speaker 1: is why I think he's going to get it this week,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and Steve agrees with me, is because Lebby repeatedly said
- 8:45Speaker 1: today it's all about taking care of the football. And
- 8:48Speaker 1: when you emphasize ball security over playmaking, You've just tipped
- 8:54Speaker 1: your hand. You've got to go with somebody you trust
- 8:56Speaker 1: not to throw the interception, not to lose the handle
- 8:59Speaker 1: in a goal line situation. Now, entirely different subject. Should
- 9:04Speaker 1: Puckett have even been allowed to be in an RPO situation?
- 9:08Speaker 1: We're sitting there going, snap it four times directly to
- 9:11Speaker 1: Fluff Bothwell or somebody else. Snap it to Sam West,
- 9:15Speaker 1: for goodness sakes. But don't make a freshman quarterback have
- 9:18Speaker 1: to make a decision. We saw what happened when you did. So...
- 9:22Speaker 1: That tells me you've got to change your offense for
- 9:25Speaker 1: your quarterback. It's not ideal, but it's the situation. And
- 9:29Speaker 1: here's the thing to remember, too, Jake. I know I'm
- 9:31Speaker 1: getting kind of all over the place. State can still
- 9:35Speaker 1: beat Vanderbilt with A.J. Swan. I really believe it. Wouldn't
- 9:38Speaker 1: that be a nice little story there?
- 9:39Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I think State could beat Vanderbilt with Billy Puckett. I'm
- 9:43Speaker 1: pretty confident about Tennessee Tech. So you're still on the
- 9:45Speaker 1: line for bowl eligibility even without Camario Taylor. Auburn tougher
- 9:51Speaker 1: challenge Ole Miss probably out of reach with those guys
- 9:54Speaker 1: but you have a chance to achieve weirdly enough what
- 9:58Speaker 1: was your goal going into the season Six and six
- 10:00Speaker 1: in a bowl game. It just hurts more because you
- 10:04Speaker 1: see what the team could be with a full-strength Camario
- 10:07Speaker 1: Taylor for a whole season. He is that much of
- 10:10Speaker 1: a difference maker. That's special. Of course, that's a whole
- 10:12Speaker 1: commentary on what they've recruited to surround him with, but
- 10:16Speaker 1: it doesn't take anything away from the fact Taylor's that special.
- 10:20Speaker 1: That said, you still got a chance to win some
- 10:22Speaker 1: games here with what you have left if you adapt
- 10:25Speaker 1: to what they can do and don't force. Put another way,
- 10:29Speaker 1: in that goal situation down there, first down, don't call
- 10:33Speaker 1: a play for Camario Taylor unless Camario Taylor's on the field.
- 10:38Speaker 3: David, we got a few minutes left here. Any other
- 10:39Speaker 3: news we need to share on Mississippi State sports?
- 10:42Speaker 1: Well, we had the exhibition with Memphis the other night,
- 10:44Speaker 1: and Josh Hubbard came off the bench. You could tell
- 10:47Speaker 1: he's not 100% speed yet. I think he had one
- 10:49Speaker 1: decent practice before he got in there. They were rattled early.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I think Memphis is going to be pretty darn good,
- 10:55Speaker 1: by the way. Not championship good, but they'll be entering
- 10:59Speaker 1: their conference. Much better team than I saw last year.
- 11:02Speaker 1: State's got a lot, a lot, a lot of chemistry
- 11:05Speaker 1: on the court to take place. The guys like each other.
- 11:08Speaker 1: I think they all play off each other pretty well.
- 11:10Speaker 1: but they don't know where to be when the ball's moving.
- 11:13Speaker 1: They don't know yet how to get in there. What
- 11:16Speaker 1: type of shots are going to go up and get
- 11:17Speaker 1: rebounds and things only game experience can show. I think
- 11:21Speaker 1: athletically they're ahead of last year, but I still have
- 11:25Speaker 1: some concerned about second chance points. I, the ball handling
- 11:31Speaker 1: without Hubbard on the point, which we'd love to get
- 11:33Speaker 1: them off. They're still suspect at this point. Um, Reed,
- 11:38Speaker 1: he's going to be good. He's going to be really good.
- 11:40Speaker 1: He's just a little raw right now, obviously. I like
- 11:43Speaker 1: Thomas Bassong there as a defender there. Chris Jan's a
- 11:47Speaker 1: symbolsome talent. It's going to take a while for this
- 11:50Speaker 1: bunch to come together to my eye.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Make sure to get him on X. Check him out
- 11:53Speaker 3: at jeanspage247sports. com. He's David Murray. David, appreciate you as always.
