- 0:00Speaker 1: I realized it was Saint Patrick's day to day when
- 0:03Speaker 1: I saw the Walker Bank sign driving into work and
- 0:06Speaker 1: it was not Walker It's not Walker Bank, it's the
- 0:09Speaker 1: Walker Walker Building. Yeah, the Walker Center, and it's it
- 0:12Speaker 1: was good. I thought, why is that green? I've never
- 0:14Speaker 1: seen Oh wait a minute, Saint Patrick's day.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I mean, most people celebrated this weekend.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Why does Saint Why does Patrick actually have a day?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Why?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Well, he's not actually Irish. He was born in Britain. Hey,
- 0:31Speaker 1: who wants to play? Drink the beer? He was captured
- 0:36Speaker 1: as an adolescent and ended up enslaved in Ireland, and
- 0:40Speaker 1: he escaped to another part of Europe, where he was
- 0:42Speaker 1: trained as a priest. He returned to Ireland in the
- 0:45Speaker 1: fifth century to spread Christianity and and drive the snakes
- 0:49Speaker 1: out of Ireland. There is no there is no evidence
- 0:53Speaker 1: that snakes ever were in Ireland.
- 0:55Speaker 2: So that's just a is that like your stick that
- 0:59Speaker 2: keeps the cougar is away?
- 1:01Speaker 3: You don't see any cougar.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Exactly, U lots of a beer leprechauns, his shamrocks. What
- 1:09Speaker 1: else do we associate with as are either of you
- 1:12Speaker 1: wearing green? I can't.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I'm not.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I sort of the little alligators.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I realized because I went to the parade and everything
- 1:24Speaker 2: on Saturday. As I was getting dressed, I don't own
- 1:27Speaker 2: anything green. I have no, I didn't have a green hat,
- 1:32Speaker 2: I didn't have green scarf.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So what'd you do?
- 1:37Speaker 3: I was a great risk of being pinched.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I suppose you always are though, great, Yeah, yeah, I
- 1:44Speaker 1: mean people always want to pinch you. Pinchable.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Festus has so I was talking to him last night,
- 1:49Speaker 2: like I said, he has green eyes, yeah, and so
- 1:52Speaker 2: he did you know he never has to worry about that,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and he said, well, my uniform is green every so
- 1:59Speaker 2: he's double green today.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Saint Patrick has never been canonized.
- 2:03Speaker 3: He hasn't.
- 2:04Speaker 1: No, despite his status as a patron, Saint Saint Patrick
- 2:07Speaker 1: was never actually canonized by the Catholic Church during his lifetime.
- 2:11Speaker 1: This is primarily because such a process didn't exist when
- 2:15Speaker 1: he died in four sixty one.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Well perhaps, well, Pope Francis can get on that.
- 2:20Speaker 4: You'd think, well, no, he's he's too busy trying to
- 2:23Speaker 4: trying to live, trying to live.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yeah he's not. He could be formally canonized, but he.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Be an thing to me.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Love Bear the shamrock was once considered a sacred plant
- 2:37Speaker 1: in Ireland.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Well, it's the it's the Trinity, it's the Father, the Son,
- 2:40Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Oh, that's the three. Ireland's only female patron, Saint Brigid,
- 2:47Speaker 1: has her own holiday in Ireland. I could use a beer.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Let's see. The first Saint Patrick's Day parade was held
- 2:55Speaker 1: in America.
- 2:55Speaker 3: In New York.
- 2:56Speaker 5: Right, yeah, at it was Oh no, no, no, no
- 3:02Speaker 5: record show that a Saint Patrick's Day parade was held
- 3:05Speaker 5: in sixteen oh one in the Spanish colony that is
- 3:07Speaker 5: now Saint Augustine, Florida.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Was organized by Spanish Colonies Irish vicar Ricardo artur So.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I don't know why the Spanish had an Irish vicar,
- 3:18Speaker 1: but they did. Oh he loved beer. The Irish were
- 3:23Speaker 1: once scorned in America. Yes, well yeah, you ever see
- 3:26Speaker 1: Gangs of New York that the Scorsese movie, that's.
- 3:30Speaker 4: John Lyden's book is no Blacks, no Jews, no Irish
- 3:33Speaker 4: or no dogs, no Irish.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah. So you know, we always we always have to
- 3:38Speaker 1: find an ethnic minority to pick on.
- 3:41Speaker 3: And they were the immigrants.
- 3:43Speaker 1: They were the corned beef and cabbage was an American innovation,
- 3:48Speaker 1: not not something that they not something that they really
- 3:51Speaker 1: go for.
- 3:51Speaker 3: In Ireland, they eat a lot of lamb there.
- 3:54Speaker 1: They eat a lot of it. They said they used
- 3:56Speaker 1: to have ham and cabbage. Corn beef was a cheaper
- 4:01Speaker 1: substitute for the oh. Irish immigrants started eating corn beef
- 4:06Speaker 1: and cabbage in America. Ain't you gonna have a beef?
- 4:10Speaker 2: And you know corn beef. Corn is not involved at all.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The corn part comes from peppercorn salt salt or whatever
- 4:19Speaker 2: they call it.
- 4:20Speaker 1: They salt it and that you know, kind of like
- 4:23Speaker 1: rock salt or it's they call those corns of salt.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So that's where corned beef comes from. Because it's it's
- 4:33Speaker 1: I guess they take a raw honka beef and then
- 4:37Speaker 1: they put it in salt and cure it. It's a
- 4:40Speaker 1: way to preserve it because they didn't have no refrigerators.
- 4:44Speaker 6: That's right, it's not it's about meat and my beer.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And if you make corned beef, you would be wise
- 4:51Speaker 1: to rinse it off very thoroughly. It'd be too salty
- 4:56Speaker 1: if you don't rinse it off. And it's and it's
- 5:02Speaker 1: and always by the flat cut. Don't don't buy the
- 5:04Speaker 1: point cut. Don't don't buy point cut.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Okay, clearly most of it's in your systems.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Let's see what else we need to know about wearing
- 5:15Speaker 1: greens common tradition. The origins are debated, with some people
- 5:19Speaker 1: saying it's a way to honor Ireland's green landscape. I
- 5:24Speaker 1: know it's in their flag.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Uh.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Now.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Somebody says that the snakes are actually Pagans. He drove
- 5:32Speaker 4: the pagan Saint Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland.
- 5:34Speaker 4: It's symbolic im converting Pagans to Christianity. Snakes and serpents
- 5:39Speaker 4: were pagan symbols.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I think it's odd that there are no snakes in
- 5:43Speaker 1: Ireland though, aren't there pretty much snakes? Snakes are pretty
- 5:46Speaker 1: much everywhere. Yeah, I'm not sure why they are. In Hawaii, Oh,
- 5:51Speaker 1: there's plenty.
- 5:53Speaker 4: There's plenty of snakes, and there's a snake problem. So
- 5:56Speaker 4: they brought mongooses over, yeah, to get rid of the snakes,
- 5:59Speaker 4: and now they got a mongoose problem.
- 6:01Speaker 2: In Hawaii has no native land snakes. There are occasional
- 6:06Speaker 2: sightings of escaped or smuggled snakes, but no snakes.
- 6:11Speaker 1: No, No, they got a mongoose problem.
- 6:13Speaker 3: They got a mongoose problem.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You know, I just can't drink green beer.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Ireland is snake free due to the last Ice Age,
- 6:21Speaker 2: which made the island too cold for reptiles. After the
- 6:24Speaker 2: ice retreated, surrounding seas prevented snakes from colonizing the Emerald dial.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And you say there's no climate change. That goes to
- 6:34Speaker 1: show you.
- 6:35Speaker 4: People around the world drank themselves into oblivion today in
- 6:38Speaker 4: honor of Saint Patrick's Day, or as the Irish referred
- 6:40Speaker 4: to it, Friday.
- 6:43Speaker 1: No. And in Chicago they dye the river. Did they
- 6:50Speaker 1: do it again? They do it every year, diet green.
- 6:54Speaker 2: With some non it's not I guess it's not toxic,
- 6:58Speaker 2: all right, Uh, it's anything else.
- 7:02Speaker 1: When it used to it used to be sort of
- 7:04Speaker 1: fun when I was a kid. You know, you wear
- 7:07Speaker 1: green and.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Let's still bill have some whimsy in your life.
- 7:12Speaker 1: You know, I'm sorry, but most things have stopped being caught.
- 7:17Speaker 3: What you need to try to incorporate fun.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I remember today is try to act happy day or
- 7:24Speaker 1: I don't give a rats ass day. Oh, come on,
- 7:27Speaker 1: play just a few beers. Uh? And people really, I
- 7:33Speaker 1: mean when we participated in the Saint Patrick's State Parade
- 7:36Speaker 1: that really it was really quite fun, and I usually
- 7:40Speaker 1: had to have somebody drive me home because I was
- 7:43Speaker 1: by time I was by the end of the parade,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I was in no condition. All Right, what do I
- 7:48Speaker 1: want another beer? Uh? It takes over five hours for
- 7:53Speaker 1: the New York City Saint Patrick's Date Parade, really five hours.
- 8:00Speaker 1: They use forty pounds of green dye to dye the
- 8:02Speaker 1: Chicago River green.
- 8:05Speaker 4: The dye that they used to dye the river green
- 8:07Speaker 4: is not actually green, it's orange.
- 8:11Speaker 3: But when you mix it with the.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Yeah, the mongoose for back to Hawaii. The mongoose were
- 8:17Speaker 4: brought in to get rid of the rats, not the snakes.
- 8:19Speaker 1: That's what I got to choose.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Now they have a ratt and mongoose problem.
- 8:24Speaker 6: Four more beers.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Did Bill frost At your band play anywhere on St.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Patrick's Day? We're not one of those occasional Irish bands.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Occasional.
- 8:37Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a few of them out there to make
- 8:40Speaker 6: some pretty good bank on Saint Patrick's Day in the weekend,
- 8:43Speaker 6: but sadly we're not one of them.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Well, that's something you might consider adding to your repertoire.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Then might we might just add a whole thin Lizzie block. Sure,
- 8:52Speaker 1: want to make some meat to drink beer? Let's see,
- 8:56Speaker 1: is there any Is Saint Patrick's Day the most pop
- 9:00Speaker 1: your drinking day in America? No? No, it is the
- 9:03Speaker 1: fourth most popular, fourth most populart So you got New
- 9:06Speaker 1: Year's Years, Christmas Day, and the fourth of July bigger
- 9:10Speaker 1: drinking day than Yeah, yeah, I can see that, and
- 9:12Speaker 1: I think that's you know, you're Sinco Tomayo. Yeah, you're
- 9:17Speaker 1: gonna be in there, wouldn't it. Maybe it's after sat Patters,
- 9:20Speaker 1: it's on.
- 9:20Speaker 3: The fifth for the sinko.
- 9:21Speaker 1: There you.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Happy Saint Patrick's Day to you?
- 9:25Speaker 1: Thank you?
- 9:26Speaker 2: All right?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Who needs a beer? Who doesn't
