- 3:36Top row racing media, one track one row.
- 3:47Oh top row racing media. We want more.
- 3:57This is what we live for. All right, Buju, we are live on
- 4:06top row racing media. It is a Monday.
- 4:08I know it's a stormy Monday for some people, but it is Monday
- 4:13nonetheless, and we're ready to move into the next week of
- 4:15racing. So again, everyone share like do
- 4:19whatever you can help us get this out.
- 4:21We have Ron brash. He's already in the staging
- 4:23area. So again, he'll be on in just a
- 4:25few minutes here at Seven O 5. And for next week and the next
- 4:30couple weeks, we're already booked up.
- 4:32We have Tim Dibble who'll be joining us again next Monday at
- 4:357:05. He has the whole episode where
- 4:39last couple weeks we've had a stacked episode.
- 4:41So we're kind of giving some breathing space with Tim because
- 4:45we can cover not only his racing career, but then obviously being
- 4:48an owner, the Hartford season that's coming up.
- 4:51And then on May 11th we have Rich Bowl again.
- 4:54That was a reschedule from a few weeks ago where Rich Bowl will
- 4:57be right on at seven O 5. And then we're going to have
- 5:00Kalamazoo announcer, mini wedge announcer, do all the things,
- 5:04Joel, front row, Dr. racer, former front wheel drive racer
- 5:08should say at 735. And one more reminder on
- 5:11Thursdays, Buju, we have the Thursday night throttle.
- 5:14You and I again are back on Thursdays at 7:00 PM where we'll
- 5:17be previewing the upcoming week, especially with Kalamazoo having
- 5:21Alamo Township night thoughts as awareness.
- 5:24New Paris has the V8 special with the cabin fever and just so
- 5:27many other things going on in the area.
- 5:30But holy cow, what's going on here?
- 5:34There we go. There we are.
- 5:35We're we're lost in the abyss for a second, but.
- 5:39Anyways, welcome to Monday. Yes, Sir, a very good racing
- 5:43weekend a a big win in the NASCAR for local interest.
- 5:47Carson Osvar picking up his first NASCAR win.
- 5:49I was at M40 this weekend. You were at New Paris.
- 5:52I was New Paris for you over there this weekend.
- 5:54Louis I. Mean that that 4 cylinder class
- 5:58Sheldon LED lag. I you know, he as one of the few
- 6:02front wheel drive racers out there, the outlaw style front
- 6:05wheel drive. I mean he once he got out front,
- 6:08he held it and he he had an answer every time Those mini
- 6:11stocks were right on his case. There's some cautions where I
- 6:14thought, oh man, this is when this is when the tide's going to
- 6:17turn. But I mean he held everyone off
- 6:20and Chris Harmon did a really hard push at the end and was
- 6:23racing right is not a bad thing. They were they were going to
- 6:26drag race to that front stretch and and Chris just ended up
- 6:28going in the infield still crossed 2nd and reminded me,
- 6:31reminding me last year of the finish between Logan and Kyle in
- 6:34the outlaw race where they kind of like a drag drag race.
- 6:38But you know, huge kudos to Sheldon.
- 6:40That was an incredible race to watch.
- 6:43Andrew de Reese put on a once he got that lead.
- 6:47I, you know, I kept thinking, OK, you know, we're going to get
- 6:49a caution at some point, some point.
- 6:52No, once they figured out how to like start, then they, they, you
- 6:57know, third time's the charm. And they, they did it on the
- 7:00third time and they went 30 laps green from that point.
- 7:02So other than the I, I don't even call it Jack Rabbit.
- 7:07I you know, I think that's something you had didn't hit the
- 7:10gas pedal soon enough. So I don't think that was sage.
- 7:13It was a nice rolling start. I think that was on the outside
- 7:16car, but whatever you know, I don't race the car.
- 7:18I'm not going to judge, but I thought sage was doing you know
- 7:22what you do at Kalamazoo, you get a nice rolling start and you
- 7:24get going. So the outside lane was not
- 7:27doing that. And so, but once they figured
- 7:29out how to do that, they went green and did that.
- 7:32And then the late limited light models skin were light on
- 7:35numbers at about 9-1 unfortunately hit the wall and
- 7:38heat races. But again, that and not
- 7:41everybody was there. I know there are a couple cars
- 7:43who's still playing the race at New Paris.
- 7:45And so I thought, you know, they put on a nice race once again,
- 7:49kind of like once bug got out front, you know, he it was it
- 7:53was him or a mistake was going to change, right.
- 7:56And so and then the Hornets, they, you know, they had a a few
- 8:00mishaps, but other than that they put on once once they got
- 8:03going, right, it's like everyone had to get the jitters out.
- 8:05So, you know, for people who didn't go, I know the Notre Dame
- 8:08blue gold game was going on and that had what like a record
- 8:11crowd or something crazy that I saw.
- 8:13So you know, you're going head to head with Notre Dame.
- 8:16That's hard to hard to compete with when you have so much going
- 8:19into this next season. After the playoffs snub last
- 8:22year, I think there's a lot of motivated Irish fans to, you
- 8:26know, get this revenge tour going.
- 8:28So so yeah, I you know, if people missed it this week, we
- 8:32had the VA Classic, which is the trifecta 1075 to win for outlaw,
- 8:39not outlaw. Excuse me for limited late
- 8:41Kalamazoo's in my head Outlaw Lemonade, but we got we got rid
- 8:45of the outlaw name up there too. They're just limited late and
- 8:47then modified 1075 to win. I believe both are 275 to start.
- 8:52I'll have to double check. Don't quote me on 250 or 275.
- 8:56And then St. stocks go for 1000 to win.
- 8:58So those those St. classes for the first leg of the trifecta.
- 9:02So I'm looking forward to that and seeing what they can do.
- 9:05But I know M40 had quite the show.
- 9:07So what did you think about M40? They did.
- 9:10I think they had 22. Ever take one there?
- 9:12Crown Vics, factory forwards, whatever we call them these
- 9:14days, They put on an excellent feature that was a great race
- 9:18and upfront and through the field, Michael Solan's took the
- 9:21win in that one. So that was a great race.
- 9:23They had a star-studded St. Stock field, multiple class
- 9:25champions from everywhere. Yanis won that as well as the
- 9:28limited late model feature there.
- 9:29But yeah, they had a good crowd. And let me tell you this deep
- 9:32fried Uncrustable. I've been going down 40 for
- 9:34three years now and I keep kept hearing about this Uncrustable.
- 9:37I finally tried it on Saturday. The hype's real.
- 9:39That Uncrustable is unbelievable, dude.
- 9:43Yeah, that first season when they took over, I think they
- 9:45brought that charge then. And it's it's as advertised.
- 9:48And that year Megan did a video on the concession stand where
- 9:52they had like the powdered sugar where they did like this whole
- 9:55thing. And I'm like, OK, if that
- 9:57doesn't sell any, then I don't know what it is.
- 9:58Because it's like when you go to a movie theater and they have
- 10:01the popcorn on the screen and also and you're like, I'm on
- 10:03popcorn. There's that, but I know that
- 10:08Sheldon's on here already. So, you know, I hope you guys
- 10:11enjoyed the race at new Paris and, and you know me, I'm not a
- 10:13big like on Mondays on the show, you know, comments thing.
- 10:16But again, I I it's what Sheldon did and that race was just.
- 10:22Yeah. You know, I think when people
- 10:24thought this class, they thought the mini wedge or mini wedges,
- 10:27excuse me, mini stop them and come in, beat them all up and
- 10:31there's not going to be any outlaws.
- 10:32But let's be frank. You know, that class was
- 10:34struggling for numbers. You had five or six and most of
- 10:37them are family. And then you know, many stocks.
- 10:40They they had pretty decent numbers ten 14812.
- 10:45You know it just on the week, but you know, I've been a big
- 10:49proponent of ABCI know not everyone likes ABC.
- 10:51But if you already think about it, new Paris essentially
- 10:53already is running ABC without calling it ABC.
- 10:56You have 4 cylinders, which would be your a group.
- 10:59Then you have the the fastest Hornets, which would be your B
- 11:02and your Hornet B features your CABC.
- 11:05You're doing it. So I don't you know, it's a
- 11:08perception thing. You just have to change the
- 11:10mindset around that that you know, it is it's still a
- 11:14feature, you know, but but again, there's just huge kudos
- 11:18to Sheldon. He put on that race was just if
- 11:22people haven't watched it yet, go back and watch it because
- 11:25even Jeremy warningers like he has a pride of lions on his and
- 11:28and there's no space. I mean he he didn't crash
- 11:31anybody. Kudos to Chris Harmon and and
- 11:34that group behind them. They had opportunities where
- 11:36they could have dumped Sheldon and then and they didn't right.
- 11:39So kudos to them. I know taking second, third, 4th
- 11:43and 5th isn't, you know, wasn't Dingo board, but you know, they
- 11:47they had opportunity to to destroy cars if they really
- 11:50wanted to and they didn't. So huge kudos to the Harmons and
- 11:54and everyone behind Sheldon on that, that they they showed what
- 11:57that class could do if given the opportunity.
- 12:01And and Sheldon races was national compacts.
- 12:04So he's raced with many stocks before.
- 12:06It's not. New.
- 12:08Yeah. So, you know, so again, that was
- 12:11that was fun. But other than that, I know
- 12:14Ron's been hanging out and I know he was at M40.
- 12:17So why don't we bring Ron on? And you know, Ron, what did you
- 12:20think about M40? Because that was your first time
- 12:22back since the April 11th show. So what do you think?
- 12:26Yeah, I will say once Kalamazoo got rained out, I said OK,
- 12:29there's about 6-7 more cars coming and other tracks not
- 12:34running yet. I thought, OK, we're going to
- 12:36get a couple more sneakers in there.
- 12:37And it sure enough, it did. I was surprised by the Crown
- 12:39VIX. I thought we'd see 14 or 15.
- 12:42And, you know, we had some more of the South Bend area cars roll
- 12:45up there to the Holloway clan was up there and that old one,
- 12:48and he runs pretty good. That reminds me of a Mclon car.
- 12:50But I think that's Babbinger in that car and he had a good run.
- 12:53But yeah, I haven't, you know, 1819 of them.
- 12:56And then women at lakes are still light a little bit.
- 12:59I mean, it's just like this class has got to get going at
- 13:01some point. And you know, it's like you just
- 13:03keep wanting to see more on the track and I mean 7/8, you know,
- 13:07everybody wants to see 16 or 12 or 14.
- 13:09And so that's getting on street socks.
- 13:12Like Buju said that was telling the class and Bobby said he was
- 13:14going to head up there Streamy and town was up there then to
- 13:17gain us cars. Oh, well, that's going to be a
- 13:19quick boy there. And I think they had like 18 and
- 13:22there's still like 5 or 6 that weren't there that you would
- 13:25probably see in week 3 or 4. And then I say the Pro 4 class
- 13:29is extreme class. I think there's 12/13 of them.
- 13:32Then a lot of mechanical issues in that group there.
- 13:36And then the Road Warriors, I think it was like 1718 and that
- 13:40was a good show there. Extreme stocks, I think they had
- 13:429, so say 93 cars and I'm going to say about 850, maybe 900
- 13:47people were there right around my guesstimation.
- 13:49And you know, a lot of South Bend area folks were up there.
- 13:53And then, you know, some Kalamazoo people were there just
- 13:55when they're looking at the books and we're talking and
- 13:57stuff. And a lot of our commenting on
- 13:59your show, they were like always say that you're going to be in
- 14:02that Lewis show, aren't you? Monday nights?
- 14:03Yes, I am. I said, we're going to talk
- 14:05about some more big names and stuff.
- 14:06And they said we, that's a really cool show you guys are
- 14:09doing. I said, well, Lewis is doing it.
- 14:10I'm just, I'm just a, I'm just a subsidiary of it down the line
- 14:14here and stuff, but entertaining show.
- 14:16I thought, oh boy, they're hot lapping 4 cars and five cars at
- 14:19a time. I thought, oh, we're going to be
- 14:20starting late. We're going to be starting late.
- 14:22And it took a couple cars to oil the track and next thing you
- 14:24know they're running a little bit behind.
- 14:26But the crowd was very, you know, 65° and sunny.
- 14:30They had a lot of patience there and stuff and a good show.
- 14:34I mean it got done I think at 10581059.
- 14:36I know Travis was watching it with his watch and you know, it
- 14:39was a close call there, but good show.
- 14:41And I got the one interview with the guy with the VROA that he
- 14:44had 13 of them there and that was his first ever win.
- 14:47And Dave Sensenbaugh was his mentor, was their men person
- 14:50watching it. And then his dad, Bob, who used
- 14:52to raise super late, was actually in the camper and
- 14:55stuff. So it was a good show and got a
- 14:58little cool at the end of the night and stuff.
- 14:59It's kind of warm up back from Mclawn Neck this coming week.
- 15:02So it's like the little bit of the travel to set up to tear it
- 15:05down and get home. And it's like, boy, this next
- 15:07week's gonna be about 6 more hours added to this deal.
- 15:09So I gotta I gotta have my Wheaties ready on Friday night
- 15:13there. I think that's, you know, just
- 15:16to kind of go back to your comment about the show, I mean,
- 15:18wherever I am, I've been getting a lot of reviews about the
- 15:21Monday Night Rewind and people look forward to listening to it.
- 15:24And, and as I told Buju, what I really like that we do is, you
- 15:27know, I feel like, you know, we're giving a lot of people who
- 15:31probably wouldn't be on a podcast a chance to be on a
- 15:33podcast, a chance to tell their story, who they're about, you
- 15:37know, the people who you're gonna see walking, you know,
- 15:40through Walmart and Meijer and, you know, Dollar General or
- 15:43wherever it may be, right? Like, you know, it, it, it's
- 15:47always, you know, you see some podcasts, national level,
- 15:50regional level, that they always just want the big names and the
- 15:52big people and the big sponsors. And it's like, that's not what
- 15:56this not, that's not what top rows ever been, you know, and,
- 15:59and and I'm so glad, you know, having abusion, of course, Drew
- 16:02Jack, when he's able to be around that, you know, they
- 16:04support that vision. Like, you know, let's get the
- 16:06night of destruction people on here.
- 16:08Let's get the front wheel drive racers, let's get St. stock
- 16:11racers who maybe they're not going to win or, you know, they
- 16:14might not win the feature, but they're going to be there.
- 16:16They're going to they're going to pay the same $35 pit pass as
- 16:19everybody else for $30.00 that, you know, Megan and Leah, you
- 16:23know, getting them on there. And I see Russell's is on here.
- 16:26But and we have some big names coming up to that.
- 16:28It's like, I really like that. I think that's what a lot of
- 16:31people appreciate about this, at least from the feedback that
- 16:33I've been giving them. Like, well, I'm so glad that the
- 16:35philosophy that I've had behind this is, is translating right?
- 16:41You know, sometimes you just wonder like, is it translating?
- 16:44And again, it's, you know, I'm not metrics driven.
- 16:47I, I watch metrics and I look at metrics because I want to know
- 16:50the metrics. But that doesn't change what we
- 16:52do. If anything, it's, you know,
- 16:54each week, the show, you know, we get more and more viewers,
- 16:57more and more things. And it's because everyone's
- 16:59supporting. And that's what I appreciate.
- 17:00And you know, I appreciate you taking time out again on your
- 17:03Monday to come back and tell more stories.
- 17:05And I'm like, we're giving you the whole episode again.
- 17:08So, you know, I hope everyone puts comments in here to ask you
- 17:11questions because again, once you get the floor, Bouje and I
- 17:14are just going to listen. You know we're.
- 17:16Going to let you. Go like you're talking with the
- 17:19classes and we talked about lesser classes years ago make
- 17:21better racing new pairs combined 2 struggling classes now you got
- 17:24a great show rather than two owners and I mean I'm glad 40
- 17:28did the same thing up there with the mini stocks and the you know
- 17:31the the pro fours. I would call them super compacts
- 17:34and you know, it's like you just you got to get some cars in a
- 17:37race. And like I say, when that Crown
- 17:38Victoria race happened Saturday night, there is like everybody
- 17:42said this going to be good race here.
- 17:43And someone's got up there and the Terry's were racing sorry,
- 17:46but I thought they were going to put each other in the wall.
- 17:47That looked like the someone's book deal a couple weeks ago.
- 17:50One was putting the other one right up against the wall and
- 17:53thought oh boy, we could have some some deals here.
- 17:55But someone's held them off at the lap traffic.
- 17:58And it's, it's about racing. We talk about exposure.
- 18:02And you know, like doing those interviews years ago, I started
- 18:05them and you know, Pierre, why are you doing it?
- 18:06I'm just going to do it on my own.
- 18:08That's no one's paying me. I'm not getting a cent doing it.
- 18:10I'm just going to put on my own pocket and do all this stuff.
- 18:13And you know, then you look at 10,000 views by Wednesday,
- 18:15Thursday and they say, hey, we're making some, you know,
- 18:17progress and stuff. And you know, it's like you got
- 18:20to give these guys exposure. It's just, we can't be just what
- 18:23we read in the old race paper because there's no more race
- 18:25paper. We can put stuff on Facebooks.
- 18:28Half of it's going to be kind of like a fighting terms and the
- 18:32the negative about it. So we get these, you know,
- 18:34interviews put up there like what you're doing.
- 18:36I try to do what I can when we're up here and then
- 18:38especially down South. And even my sponsor pictures.
- 18:41I haven't taken sponsored pictures for over a decade and I
- 18:44keep pushing these guys. Get your sponsors, contact them
- 18:47all year. You just can't wait till March
- 18:49and say I need sponsors. I, you know, remember last year,
- 18:52what'd you do? I heck, I ran and I don't
- 18:54remember I was at in points. Did you win any?
- 18:56I think I won three. You know, you got, you know,
- 18:57they just got to keep plugging this stuff and you know, these,
- 19:00these guys say put the bills and you don't have cars on the
- 19:04track. And some of these drivers, I
- 19:06mean, I see a post on Facebook, I need a car somebody to sponsor
- 19:09me. I'm going to race at 9 tracks
- 19:11and I'm thinking I'll be lucky to be at 2:00.
- 19:13And then, you know, what are you going to do afterwards?
- 19:16And I say, God, get a portfolio put together and just do like a
- 19:18professional presentation of what you got and what you look
- 19:21like your family and, you know, maybe not your criminal record,
- 19:24but that might that works good for some.
- 19:26But you know, it's all about exposure and, you know, being
- 19:30satisfied fan wise and promoter wise, driver wise.
- 19:34And I mean, I'm looking at Bill and he's like, man, I didn't
- 19:36expect as many people here tonight.
- 19:38That's as a pleasant surprise because sometimes those April
- 19:41shows can be real, real dogs for, you know, being 4550° and
- 19:46you want to do the show and you get 300 stands, 200 stands, you
- 19:49got 82 cars. It's like what the pit passes
- 19:51are going to pay for this purse, but nothing else, you know, So,
- 19:55but yeah, kudos what you guys are doing here because it's it's
- 19:58not easy and everybody thinks we all have copious amounts of time
- 20:01to do a lot of stuff and, you know.
- 20:04We, we all, I mean, I still have a full time job.
- 20:05I'll be doing a probably an 11 or 12 hour shift after getting
- 20:08out of here. So we got a, it's just for
- 20:11another few more months yet, but we're getting there.
- 20:14But yeah, good show and a great exposure.
- 20:17And I mean hopefully all the promoters watch all this stuff
- 20:20too to see what goes down. Well, and, and we have, you
- 20:24know, Leah Deble's always in here and, and I appreciate her,
- 20:27but I mean, you see a lot of the same names every single week.
- 20:30And I try to give those shout outs because I want people to
- 20:32see like we see that, you know, we noticed that and you know,
- 20:36because it, I know it means a lot to Boujou and I know it
- 20:38means a lot to myself and, and it's always that appreciation
- 20:42and staying grounded. I think Boujou did a really nice
- 20:44post yesterday that, you know, he's not in this to get insight
- 20:48scoops. He's not in this to break the
- 20:50news. He's not in this to, you know,
- 20:53have a stick measuring contest of numbers and everything.
- 20:58And that's where I think that's one thing that, you know, even
- 21:03for myself, when I think about like when Springport gifted me
- 21:07that scooter that I fell off at Super Shoe, you know, but when
- 21:10they did that right, like I'm on the front stretch, but people
- 21:13know that's not me. I mean, you really see photos of
- 21:15me because it's like it's not about me, it's about the
- 21:18drivers. And you know, that's what we
- 21:20sacrifice all these hours and you with miles going down to
- 21:23Mount Lawn. I mean, just think of the
- 21:24exposure for that track and how many people have learned about
- 21:27Mount Lawn. That's probably why we have
- 21:29Crown Vics up here for a good probability there.
- 21:33So it's like we're all doing our part, right?
- 21:35And it's, you know, I think some people get in this to showboat
- 21:38and be the front of the stage and, and say, oh, I can do this
- 21:42and I can do that. And they they forget the core of
- 21:45it, right? You know, you know, some people
- 21:47do chase the my favorite nickname, likes and money and
- 21:52you know, some people chase that and go after that, But it's like
- 21:55you go do you, right? You know, copycat whoever you
- 21:58want. That's fine, go do that.
- 22:00But it's not authentic, right? And there's a way to be
- 22:03authentic. So and you're someone who has
- 22:05done it authentically over the years where you've just found a
- 22:08way to make people matter and and make them feel like they
- 22:11matter, especially with your Victor Lane interviews, you
- 22:14know, think of how many drivers you've probably interviewed who
- 22:17may have never even been interviewed before, you know,
- 22:21you know, I think them got exposure that they wouldn't have
- 22:24gotten, you know. And Brady this past Saturday,
- 22:27that was his first ever win in the the VRA class.
- 22:31And yeah, let's say I know when we started doing other
- 22:33interviews at other tracks, a lot of drivers weren't
- 22:35remembering their sponsors. And I say, Mandy, I was trying
- 22:38to either lip them to them or point to them and that and I
- 22:41say, you know, that's really important thing.
- 22:43You should really know this. We're about to be in a NASCAR
- 22:45guy that has his stuff stuck in his head, but you know, he got
- 22:48to be ready. Said oh man, he won.
- 22:50Only I got to remember my sponsors now and I said give you
- 22:52a couple seconds to look him over and man, it can go a long
- 22:56way. Definitely there.
- 22:58Be like missing a kid's birthday boy.
- 22:59You can't check over that if you forget our parents birthday.
- 23:03Well, that's when I did the the Marf banquet.
- 23:06There's a couple people like the one guy forgot to say his wife.
- 23:09And so we get we redid it because he's, you know, he knew
- 23:12he would not live that down if that got I mentioned.
- 23:17But you know, even that there's a lot of you know, I felt like
- 23:20the kids, the mini wedge racers and all that, they did such an A
- 23:24better job in many cases than some of the adults were, you
- 23:27know, like, well, who do you want to thank?
- 23:29And and some, you know, wrote it down.
- 23:30But that's where I was talking with Kenny Hat.
- 23:32I said just think if this mini wedge program that they're
- 23:35building, I said, what if you took one day and no heat races,
- 23:38which I know that's like a triggering to a lot of people,
- 23:41no heat races, but you know, use that time to coach every kid on
- 23:45the property that day. We're going to practice
- 23:47interviews. Taylor, Paul, Kenny, whoever,
- 23:51all their volunteers. You can get KTS in there whoever
- 23:53you want, go around and interview each kid for a minute
- 23:57to get them comfortable. Because at the Rumble in Fort
- 23:59Wayne, I saw that where you just saw so many people freeze as
- 24:02soon as the pet Rd. TV, which again, I mean, I would
- 24:05probably do the same damn thing. And I'm a public, you know, I
- 24:08public speak, but you know, you get a pit Rd.
- 24:10TV and an interview right in front of you and all the sudden
- 24:13like, Oh crap, you know, but it's you know, how can you
- 24:15practice that? How can you practice those
- 24:17opportunities? Because you know, a lot of
- 24:19tracks they don't have that extra announcer to go down to
- 24:21Victory Lane and do these things anymore like you used to in the
- 24:25day. So you know, who actually gets
- 24:27that practice? How or how do they get that
- 24:29practice? And so it's almost kind of you
- 24:31think of these college programs, they have people literally who
- 24:35that's their job is to go and you practice media, right?
- 24:38And so it's one of those things that again, I just, I know
- 24:41everyone appreciates what you do.
- 24:43And, and I watched that interview.
- 24:44I, I'm, I like the Vroa cars. You know, I always like watching
- 24:48them race and I know my, my dad Bob, he likes, he always likes
- 24:53those vintage cars too. And so I got a chance to be
- 24:57like, oh, I didn't even know who that I don't even remember that
- 24:59driver. So I got to learn about him, You
- 25:01know, 'cause you see a lot of us drivers with that group, but
- 25:04every now and then they swap them out.
- 25:05So again, just, you know, if you haven't been thanked lately,
- 25:09thank you again for, you know, all that you do 'cause I know
- 25:11for so many people, it means so much to them.
- 25:14I know it's cool going back. The thing is about 13 years ago,
- 25:17my Warsaw Speedway did the photos there for four different
- 25:19events and that's and then the following year they did first
- 25:22show they had the modifies on the track at midnight and that
- 25:24was the end of it. But there was a show in
- 25:26September and Dave Darwin was going to be there to race.
- 25:28And that was his first time ever in a mini Sprint.
- 25:31And I never thought that would be possible with all the years
- 25:33of racing he did. But we did an interview there.
- 25:35But there was another youngster I interviewed, little boy and #7
- 25:39from Adrian MI and I said John Noddy, that might be a
- 25:42possibility or Dane. And it was actually, it was
- 25:47John's grandson. And so I interviewed him and now
- 25:52he's racing All Star sprints and stuff.
- 25:53So I was like a pretty cool deal there.
- 25:55And so I was like, you know, then the mom came out and then
- 25:59he they thanked me. And because I mentioned John
- 26:01starting sod back in 1980 and you know, then it kind of like
- 26:05it. Then another week later though,
- 26:06the family like, Oh my God, that was really cool.
- 26:08You remember all that stuff back then?
- 26:09I said, well, we were just going through the pits.
- 26:11Emerson accent. It was another interview we did
- 26:13down there at Warsaw one time with him when he was a little
- 26:15kid. So and he's with Root of
- 26:17Outlaws. So it's like those kids with
- 26:18those mini sprints, you never know where they're going to go.
- 26:20And then we had another one, Russ Gangster.
- 26:22He want to race there. I think he's racing for about
- 26:25the last 65 years and he won the the pro mini Sprint feature race
- 26:30and what an interview there. And I'm thinking of all the
- 26:33things he's done. You sack silver crown, you sack
- 26:35sprints, midgets, Phoenix smile areas racing worse on a Friday
- 26:39night coming up from Peru. So kind of a pretty cool deal
- 26:42there. But yeah, I could say exposure
- 26:45is the key and keeping it positive and people, you know,
- 26:49they just never know they're going to put the camera on them.
- 26:51And you know, it's like sometimes I go on that I'm
- 26:53trying to find Woodhall Friday or Saturday night 'cause he won
- 26:56that pro, that stock compact race, which is a great race,
- 26:59holding off wood and I couldn't find him.
- 27:01And then couple other guys were like, oh, you know, always that
- 27:03kind of nervous when he do an interview.
- 27:05And I'm like, well, all right, I told Travis, I said well, we'll
- 27:07just pack up and get going, you know, and get home and stuff.
- 27:10And it'll be another day, another battle there.
- 27:12But anyway, good to be on the show and you know, we talked
- 27:15about favorite racing back in the day and I kind of threw some
- 27:19other stuff together on times times there was racing was
- 27:22really good. And I'm just I'm kind of whipped
- 27:25through them here for a few minutes.
- 27:26While I was thinking about 19787879, we're running slicks
- 27:30for late models and New Paris was getting about 13 or 14.
- 27:33But of that 13 or 14 we had like Nairi, we'd have Terry Seneker
- 27:38there, Bob Carnes, Dick Barker. We would also would have Lyle
- 27:42Bailey in a 57 Chevy with putting slicks on it, like Keith
- 27:45Bailey putting on slicks and Tom Davies putting on slicks to race
- 27:48with the Super. So it was like a 13 car field,
- 27:50but you know, the probably a three second difference, if not
- 27:52more than that on times. And mysteriously they they came
- 27:57up with this protract tire, a hard treaded tire and they
- 28:01dropped a super late class. They brought up the hobby stocks
- 28:04to be like a limited late model. And South Bend, New Paris,
- 28:09Angola, Avila, Fort Wayne, Rockford, Kalamazoo and Anderson
- 28:14all picked up that same tire rule.
- 28:16And that's when the ASA Limited sportsman started up and those
- 28:19guys were all legal. So you had like your Wayne Lens
- 28:22scenes and your Wayne Swarts in Wisconsin coming down and down,
- 28:25Leeches and Rich Bickles racing, Tracy Leslie from the east side
- 28:29of the state, Dennis met at Pennigan.
- 28:31You had Ray Fullen from Anderson area and Fields.
- 28:37They had cars that were legal. He had your Fort Wayne group, A
- 28:40dancer, Chrisman Stovall. They all have the same, you
- 28:45know. Then we have that race at South
- 28:47Bend and we had like say Charlie Hunt was in that mix, Garen, Sir
- 28:50Fred Reed, Malecki, Jim Blunt, Bobby Blunt, Tom Tromboli.
- 28:55And then we start having guys because the cars are legal.
- 28:57They could travel. Now you have a car and you want
- 29:00to travel, It's like, Oh my God, where are the rules going to be?
- 29:02I was, you know, I was even I'm worth my time to almost like the
- 29:05Wheelman series, man, I like to show up that race, but I'm not
- 29:07legal, so I can't show up. But these guys are racing and we
- 29:10went down to Indianapolis for a race and say Vern Chirac, buddy,
- 29:13Chirac was down there. Tromboli was down there.
- 29:15I mean, it was just because they're all illegal.
- 29:17And somehow if we can just get some kind of universal rules set
- 29:21up that would that would be so much cooler for the guys that
- 29:24could just show up and race. Because even St.
- 29:26Stocks, you know, I mean, a street stock's a street stock.
- 29:30You know, back in the day, a late model's a late model.
- 29:31But now it's like, Oh my God, every tracks got a little bit of
- 29:35an island different on these, some of these rules.
- 29:36And it makes it tough for guys to want to go back and forth and
- 29:39they don't want to go and stay in a tech line forever.
- 29:41I remember I was talking to Bobby Strummy Saturday night and
- 29:44he says we went to Owosso last year.
- 29:45He says we're on the Jack stands for 45 minutes.
- 29:48They were checking that car over like everything.
- 29:51And he says, and we're like, we know we're legal, but they were
- 29:53still going through, you know, probably figure, hey, Bobby's
- 29:56coming 200 miles away. We better check these things
- 29:58out. And but there's a cool time with
- 30:02that protract tire with that hard shredded.
- 30:04And people complained about it, but boy, it slowed him down.
- 30:07I remember Leroy Skiles now Danny would spin his tires, but
- 30:11he would still win a lot. And I remember Leroy was saying,
- 30:14actually, I'm closer to Denny now on times because he spins
- 30:18his tires where we can figure out the handling a little bit.
- 30:20He says we can actually maybe win a few races against him now.
- 30:24And actually he did. So that was kind of a cool time.
- 30:26Another time was like when sod went to pavement racing and they
- 30:31had sod on dirt, sprints on dirt and they had a villa with
- 30:34Capital Speedway Fort Wayne and Tom Ish was owning it and they
- 30:40kept itching to have Sprint car races while your Thursday night
- 30:42Thunder was kicking in on TV with this wingless sprints on
- 30:45Thursday night. Great show.
- 30:46A lot of guys from Michigan were taking the wings off with
- 30:49pavement cars. And we had, you know, a group
- 30:51from Warsaw had just closed a few years before too.
- 30:54So Tom's like let's put Sprint cars on pavement at first show
- 30:57was at a villing. It was July 4th for a race and
- 31:01they had about 18 sprints. You had your dirt Sprint cars
- 31:03putting on slicks for the first time.
- 31:06Now, Hank Lauer raced some slicks before, but he had slicks
- 31:09then. You had like your Mike Vander
- 31:11Moss, Bob Sealman, Jeff Bloom, the pavement specialist that
- 31:15weren't even like you won't even see the tires break loose in the
- 31:17corners. Well, Hank got the lead and he's
- 31:20every corner. He's just like flooring it like
- 31:22a dirt car. And Jim, Jim M Stutch is like
- 31:24this guy, this is going to blow up.
- 31:26This tires got to be blowing up. Lap 24.
- 31:28The thing finally blew up coming out of two and I think Jeff
- 31:31Bloom took the win. But that was that next show they
- 31:34did it at Plymouth and I think they have 15 cars show up that
- 31:38place. I never seen a place full of
- 31:40people. And Tom Ish put a great clip on.
- 31:42He showed Knoxville, IA for the Plymouth thing on TV and it
- 31:46showed those cars flipping into the fence and over the fence.
- 31:48And people are thinking, Oh my God.
- 31:50But they didn't have nothing like that happen.
- 31:52But that was a great time inside because then the Warsaw guys
- 31:55like Tom Patterson, Denny England, he started a long win
- 31:59streak at Fort Wayne, BIM Go Atkins, Tim Norman, even Tony
- 32:04Elliott come up race pavements against some of the guys with
- 32:07Jason McCord and Donnie Adams from down South.
- 32:09He had Gary Fido, a Bill Tyler, Brian Tyler.
- 32:13They had Ron Kohler up north here that had a Sprint car for
- 32:15years, but he had to travel. Now he's got Shoals in the local
- 32:18tracks now and that was, you know, got 3540 cars at a couple
- 32:23of Labor Day shows. A lot of the fields were like in
- 32:26the 20s and then Fort Wayne decided they wanted to break
- 32:30away from sod a little bit or with auto value.
- 32:33So auto value is kind of the Michigan group.
- 32:35He had a sport lane group or still was like 20 some cars in
- 32:37that group and the races were still pretty good.
- 32:41And Carrie, Jerry, Carrie was another one that came about and
- 32:44other guys just start showing up with pavement cars and then must
- 32:47see showed up and they kind of sided with Hoosier.
- 32:52Who's your outlaw super series? So that kind of put out of value
- 32:55on an island. So they kind of do it a little
- 32:57bit and then like with three years later, they're back to
- 32:59have it one class and they're like 12 cars.
- 33:02It was like, oh, they had so many cars, but a lot of those
- 33:04guys just got up in age. It's almost like those guys that
- 33:06South and when they race those supers in the 80s, a lot of them
- 33:08in their 50s and early 60s and they're like, now we can't keep
- 33:12doing this for another four or five years.
- 33:14This is kind of like a last hurrah for a couple years.
- 33:16And a lot of guys are just getting up in age and just like,
- 33:18man, we're we just they're just done.
- 33:21And every that thing that happens to a lot of tracks with
- 33:23some of the, you know, core drivers and classes, they move
- 33:26on or get out of racing. And he just man, where's who's,
- 33:29who's going to be the next guys that's going to be able to step
- 33:31up and keep that going. Because the VA technology, it's
- 33:35like we're talking even Saturday night there and the VA
- 33:39technology, you open the hood and you know where everything's
- 33:41at. But these 4 cylinder cars, you
- 33:43open up a hood, it's like, my God, where's the battery?
- 33:45How many sensors are there? It's so much less mechanical
- 33:48where they talk about the timing near the computer and stuff is
- 33:52so much important in racing now. Someone's got the altered
- 33:54computer and their chips and this and that or the old days it
- 33:57was just open your hood and, you know, things were simpler back
- 34:00then. But kind of going back, we're
- 34:02talking about some more great times, too.
- 34:04Was Winchester the Magnum Oil series now?
- 34:07New Paris had them with Super Late Models.
- 34:10They opened the body rules up in 8283.
- 34:12Big spoilers, longer noses. And then Winchester picked that
- 34:16up and ran a Magnum Oil series. Linda Holman was running that
- 34:19big. Magnum Oil was out of New York
- 34:20and they sponsored. He had Bobby Blunt and yeah,
- 34:24Bruce Hartlip and Jim Cooper, Fred Hall, Dwayne Mcgonigo,
- 34:28Ronimus. They all were like on the high
- 34:29banks of Winchester was Super Late Models with the big
- 34:32spoilers. And it was like, holy smokes,
- 34:34those cars were there are some pretty daunting wrecks.
- 34:37But that series lasted I think five years.
- 34:39A lot of series seem to last about 5-6 years and then they
- 34:42just kind of it just kind of wanes a little bit.
- 34:45And another series that was cool back in the day was that fast
- 34:48series. They ran it at Fort Wayne and
- 34:49then it was like 8586 template Late Models and it was Fort
- 34:54Wayne and they had the fast guy was out of Detroit so they had
- 34:58some Flat Rock guys come down and Albert suspended.
- 35:00Sandusky was on the schedule. But yeah, Johnny Miller actually
- 35:03are Johnny Miller from Montville.
- 35:06Margie's and the Leo son. He was the rookie of the
- 35:08Internet and he was a point champions too in that class.
- 35:11And then he had Butch Miller run it, Mark Johnson, Rd.
- 35:14Summers, Chuck Romel, Larry Knowlton, Bobby Blunt, Stan
- 35:17Perry, Larry Zent, Steve Chrisman and just the names.
- 35:21They had like 2428 Late Models and they had the first race they
- 35:25had at Fort Wayne. It was a memorial weekend.
- 35:28Buddy Shrock was on the way to Berlin to race.
- 35:31He raced his car and Butch Miller was there.
- 35:35Harold Cook was there. They had a big wreck on lap one
- 35:37on the backstretch. Harold Cook broke his wrist, but
- 35:40the car was still drivable. Butch Miller really wrecked his
- 35:43car so Butch got in. Harold Cook's Late model started
- 35:46on the tail so they had about 17 cars left 50 lap and Buddy was
- 35:50leaded and leaded. Here comes Butch and Harold
- 35:52Cook's car beats him at the line by two feet and I was like all
- 35:56things to get into another drivers car not even
- 35:58understanding you know, other than you know, obviously foot
- 36:01pedal gap, you know, and that all Butch needed to know and
- 36:04then take on wins to race something like that.
- 36:06But a great series. It ran for about 3 years and you
- 36:09know, always had guys coming from the Cleveland area, Toledo,
- 36:12it would make that hall to Fort Wayne.
- 36:13And I mean that was that was a great time.
- 36:16Another time was Galesburg. But 1980 they open up the rules.
- 36:19That's when dirt was starting to do the big spoilers.
- 36:22And eventually first guys that were doing it were Marty
- 36:25Crawford, Racer X. He had that big spoiler.
- 36:27He had John Dole, the Pineapple Kid as they would call him.
- 36:31He would do the big spoilers at Dick Bissett, Larry Knowlton,
- 36:34Jerry Mint, Tom McGee, Debbie Nash, Ron Simmons, Tom Rugg,
- 36:38Freddie Cook, Bob Shippers. Then a guy showed up that we got
- 36:41rained out at Berlin for AASA race.
- 36:44My buddies wrestling Randy and I went, so let's go to Galesburg.
- 36:47Randy Sweet brought that car out the red car with the big
- 36:50Plexiglasses all over the car and he had that thing parked
- 36:54kind of like a about worry about pull out it.
- 36:56So it's like the center stage. I took a bunch of Oh my God,
- 36:59look at this darn thing. They had the the side pods that
- 37:02had like a, a, a splitter on the roof, longer noses.
- 37:06And that thing was turning to like 12 fifties is like, wow,
- 37:09this thing's really hauling the butt.
- 37:10And then later on that's when he was setting all those track
- 37:13records everywhere. He'd go to Kalamazoo with it and
- 37:15that's where he did that world's fastest 3/8 mile.
- 37:18Then he went the those all got in Birmingham, AL with a 5/8.
- 37:22He went to Winchester and even Junior Hanley saw him at
- 37:26Winchester and he's Oh my God, this thing's a weapon.
- 37:28You seen how fast that car was and that thing was like down in
- 37:31the fourteens. It's like this unheard of slicks
- 37:33and everything. But that was some really just
- 37:37some good times, like only a 5-6 year period.
- 37:39Now I got one more. I flip my page here.
- 37:41I had to write this up this afternoon.
- 37:42So I don't want to forget all this, but kind of like going
- 37:47back with that, you know, when we had that HA series and that
- 37:50with the payment sprints. And I remember Ron Kohler, he
- 37:54was leading the points for Haas. He had a chance to be on
- 37:57national TV or Thursday night Thunder.
- 37:59So he's on TV for Thursday night Thunder.
- 38:01It was on TV live and Jack Hewitt clips him and there's a
- 38:05good thing on YouTube. He can actually look this up and
- 38:07puts Kohler into the fence and Hewitt's into the fence and
- 38:10Kohler's car. I mean, they they ran and they
- 38:12were checking him out. I think he had one wheel left on
- 38:15the car after that in the fence. And Ron says all that damn
- 38:19Hewitt, I'm going to kick his a double S, you know, and Ron's
- 38:22still trying to get out of the car and he's like, Oh my God, am
- 38:24I sore? And Hewitt goes by and he says,
- 38:27you all right. And Ron's like, well, OK, just
- 38:32kept on walking, never apologized or anything.
- 38:34And Ron's like that. I want to kick him.
- 38:35I want to just whip him that I couldn't even get out hard to
- 38:37get out of the car. Well, he was leading the house
- 38:39points. Next day was a show up here and
- 38:43Kohler's like I scram had to get another car ready.
- 38:45He had car, he had to scram different wing on it, different
- 38:47body work on. He'd had piece of car together.
- 38:49Just he's man. I'm leading aside the the house
- 38:52points and now this thing happens of all things.
- 38:54But just some cool little tidbits back in the day with
- 38:58racey. I remember Plymouth in early
- 38:592000s when they had that outlaw sportsman class and it was like
- 39:03Mike Molizer and the Streamys were in that mix and you had
- 39:07Fort Wayne cars but Ish had it as Capital Speedway and those
- 39:10guys would come over from a villa in Fort Wayne to run on
- 39:13Sundays with Miracle Cholosky by you.
- 39:15They have 30 modifies you to have 30 sportsmen.
- 39:17And then you had your super street class that was like Ray
- 39:21Bear, Greg Early. And then you had Jimmy Lambert
- 39:25coming around from Fort Wayne with that old 33 car and 1618 of
- 39:28them. And then they even, you know,
- 39:30had a 4 cylinder class of course.
- 39:32And but boy, talk about some late nights.
- 39:35I'm glad I work nights because sometimes those nights on Sunday
- 39:37would run until 1:00 in the morning.
- 39:39And I was like, people are like, I'm getting out here and I said
- 39:42I can still sleep in and be at work tomorrow night.
- 39:44So I'm cool on this. But just some good times for
- 39:47racing and like I say, it was kind of cool, like when we did
- 39:52that 40 show, you know, we got that lap board, you know, doing
- 39:55this for things for the drivers and stuff like that.
- 39:56And we got the three to come up from central IN and even kind of
- 39:59cool seeing those Ohio wheel man.
- 40:01I mean, I only had eight cars, but I mean that was quite an
- 40:03experience for them and they had some really beautiful rides.
- 40:06You know, just got to get something figured out on the
- 40:07rules. But like I say, now the mini
- 40:11wedges have picked up and you know, he's seen a lot of kids
- 40:14that are, you know, look at Pressler's daughter.
- 40:16I mean, I remember her crawling around at the car show.
- 40:19A little redhead kid, you know, crawling on the floor and now
- 40:22she's they saw her in a prom picture the other night and
- 40:24she's going to be racing, you know, be getting into the bigger
- 40:26cars. And it's like, Oh my God, this
- 40:28is like a time warp and stuff. And even seeing Dylan and Nick
- 40:32strimming when they were like getting Hot Wheels and they'd
- 40:34sit with Carl and now, you know, both they were race, they were
- 40:37racing and stuff. They're like they are and but
- 40:41you know, lots of good times over the racing years and like,
- 40:44say, you know, all you can do is just work on what we got
- 40:46presently going on and like you lose, you're up at Kalamazoo,
- 40:50Buju's jumped, you know, bouncing over the place there
- 40:52and stuff. And we're doing the central IN
- 40:54stuff and Winchester and it's tough sledding right now.
- 40:58The weather can be sold. I mean, you read, you look at
- 41:01the weather forecast and it's already saying 53 for Saturday.
- 41:04And I was like, Oh my God, well, this is going to be a cold 1.
- 41:07And it gets in everybody's mind and they got to announce the
- 41:11weather every time they get a chance on TV or the radio just
- 41:13to get their hits. And you know, how many times
- 41:16have they been wrong? But and then the rain outs, you
- 41:19know, so many track owners, you know, they see a 10,000 to
- 41:2212,000 purse and you got this rain race forecast going to be
- 41:25rain. And it's like, boy, do we roll
- 41:27the Dykster, don't we? And you know, like, say with
- 41:30Randy calling it on Friday night and that was a good call because
- 41:33it did rain. And sometimes people call it and
- 41:35it's a sunny day and everybody can't wait to show that pitch
- 41:38with the sun out. That's what you what?
- 41:40You know, damn if you do and damn if you don't.
- 41:42But, you know, you got to have insurance, you got your safety,
- 41:44you got all your food prep, your time, driver's time.
- 41:48And what do you do? But like I say, new Paris this
- 41:52Saturday with that trifecta series and say that limited lake
- 41:56class, you know, they got a dandy payoff for that.
- 41:58So hopefully they can get about 12 or 14 cars for that.
- 42:01I know the modifiers are still off this week, I believe.
- 42:04I think they're at Owosso. I think they're race in
- 42:06Saturday. So Mike the Gatton was even
- 42:08talking about he might be heading over there.
- 42:09But I know he smells new Paris money whenever there's new Paris
- 42:12race because he always does pretty good.
- 42:14But hopefully, you know, I get 10/12/14 of those mods and the
- 42:18street stocks. You know, they just got to get
- 42:20their cars out, as simple as that.
- 42:22And you know, the the money's right there and you know, that's
- 42:26all I can do is offer the show and have them guys show up.
- 42:29When I think the the street stocks like Nick Sheremi coming
- 42:33back to New Paris, that was fun to to see Sheremi on the
- 42:37property, which I, you know, I always enjoy watching a Sheremi
- 42:40race and, and I know obviously Bobby went over to M40, but you
- 42:45know, we'll see what we get on on Saturday.
- 42:47You know, we have the three classes, but modifieds.
- 42:50I know last year, the first modified race at new Paris,
- 42:54someone decided to counter program new Paris on purpose.
- 42:57It was intentional and everybody, obviously we won't
- 43:01say who, but if you know, you know, and and and that hurt new
- 43:06Paris and that big damper on that.
- 43:08But you know, they the modifieds that showed up, you know, Ronnie
- 43:11Maynard, you know, did an incredible job racing that and
- 43:14he proved that throughout, which I mean, we know when he gets
- 43:17behind the wheel, he's he's a good one to watch.
- 43:19And so hopefully this Saturday doesn't look like any counter
- 43:23programming. Everyone's schedule has been
- 43:24announced and everyone knows what they're doing.
- 43:26So you know, I know with Owosso, right?
- 43:28They have that big modified group going on on that Midwest.
- 43:31So I know they'll get a bunch and they get a bunch.
- 43:32Anyways, that's modified country up there between them and
- 43:35Springport. You know, you know, Springport,
- 43:38their their St. stocks weren't always the strongest, but you
- 43:40know, they had a lot of quality, not so much quantity.
- 43:45But then those modifieds came out and that's where I mean, I
- 43:47fell in love with modified racing again watching them at
- 43:49Springport. So you know, I know they'll put
- 43:52on a good show at at new parents.
- 43:54I'd like to see fourteen of them, you know, at least, you
- 43:57know, maybe more. But I know with a lot of people
- 43:59like racing there in the modified so they'll get their
- 44:01cars because again, that's modified country.
- 44:04So, you know, but that that's where you're mentioning even
- 44:09earlier some of the mini Wedge graduates, you know, we had Evan
- 44:12on a few weeks ago, you know, he's a mini Wedge graduate and
- 44:15then cruise average this past Saturday at New Paris.
- 44:19I know he made his his big car debut in a in a front wheel
- 44:23drive at the enduro's, but then he also raced at Drew's show and
- 44:28unfortunately hit the turn 2 wall coming out during the
- 44:31feature. But and that kind of ended his
- 44:33night there. But you know, he he did a pretty
- 44:35nice job on Saturday at New Paris and then so that is
- 44:39exciting to watch him pull in. We had a quite a few new front
- 44:43wheel drive racers, Hornets, you know, from a couple of them came
- 44:46over from night of destruction. But yeah, the this this Saturday
- 44:50should be a good show for the trifecta again, that it's what
- 44:53street socks come, you know, because this is its own point
- 44:56system. So people want to race the
- 44:58trifecta but not commit to new Paris every week.
- 45:01There's points for the new Paris weekly racing, and then there's
- 45:04points for this trifecta where at the end, I don't remember
- 45:07what the bonus will be. I don't know that they've
- 45:10announced it yet. I know when they were on the
- 45:11show a few weeks ago, Chris and Tracy said they're going to do
- 45:14things a little different this year with that.
- 45:16But I know at least 1000 to win minimum, you know this race and
- 45:21I think the late models and modifieds are 1075.
- 45:25I know St. Stocks are 200 to start.
- 45:27So you know, there there's some nice money.
- 45:29So it'll be, you know who wants to come and play 3 times because
- 45:33I this one for the Street Stocks.
- 45:36And then flagger boy, I want to say is the second trifecta race.
- 45:39And then at the end of September, 20th or 19th,
- 45:42whatever that Saturday is, 19th or 20th, it's one of them that
- 45:46will be the third leg. So, and I think for the
- 45:50Limiteds, this is their first one, then the Sizzler will be
- 45:53their second one, and then the third one will be again that
- 45:57championship night. And then for the Modifieds, I
- 45:59think it's the same same setup. So Flacker Boy is the only one
- 46:02that's different because they don't race the Street Stocks on
- 46:05Sizzler night. But this will be like 1.
- 46:07And then you don't, you know, if you want to just do trifecta,
- 46:10you don't have to come back and tell Sizzler night, race the
- 46:12Sizzler. We'll also have Outlaws that
- 46:14night too, the Supers and unless I'm wrong, I I will look at the
- 46:19schedule again, but I if I remember that set up and then
- 46:22again championship. Everyone has the same
- 46:24championship in September, so which is usually blow out
- 46:27weekend, but now they don't do blow out.
- 46:29So that's when the trifecta so you don't have to commit to the
- 46:32new pairs for the full season race.
- 46:34This trifecta. It has its own point system.
- 46:36You know, bug took advantage of that last year and I know he was
- 46:39on here a little bit Again, congratulations to him.
- 46:41Just once he got out front. I'm like the Batmobile has left
- 46:45the building and bog mobile. But and it's not even I don't
- 46:50even think it's Batman this year, but he is a nice scheme.
- 46:53I don't know if you saw that the picture of his lay model.
- 46:55Yeah, and his lap times are like him and de Vries were like 13
- 46:58thirties. I mean, that's like they'd be
- 47:01top eight in a super lay model field there, you know?
- 47:05Andrew was so as kind of the opposite.
- 47:07So in the Street Stock race, Nick Stremi was the one chasing
- 47:10down Andrew. Once Andrew got out front, there
- 47:13was some traffic that that Nick had to work through.
- 47:15But then, you know, if there was a cautionary thing, things could
- 47:18have got interesting. But you know, then it was the
- 47:20opposite. Andrew was the one chasing, you
- 47:22know, he played the strumming role in that race where he was
- 47:25chasing Bug, but Bug was, I mean, he was out selling popcorn
- 47:29and pizza and everything else. Everybody caught up to him, but
- 47:34that's where he was the trifecta champion last year.
- 47:37And I think Austin or Logan is Logan.
- 47:40Logan Maynard, I want to say, won the Street Stock even though
- 47:43the champion on a regular night was Bobby and then Logan and the
- 47:48Late Model. So again, for people who don't
- 47:50know the trifecta or drivers who don't know the trifecta, it is
- 47:53different. So you know, as much as we'd
- 47:55love to see it, new pairs all the time, if you only want to
- 47:57commit, you know, to this trifecta series that are I don't
- 48:01know the bonus, so don't quote me.
- 48:03That's that's a new Paris thing. But I know last year the
- 48:05Champions got a bonus for that. So they they're doing something
- 48:08different. But the payouts not that bad
- 48:11though. So, you know, if you're thinking
- 48:13to come down, you only have to commit three times to that.
- 48:16Yeah, and hopefully those modified some of those Angola
- 48:18guys, OK, we're thinking of Owosso.
- 48:21They got 24 pretty good core cars up there.
- 48:23They got some other dogs that will be up there.
- 48:26And we're going to be AB main special.
- 48:28We go to new Paris. We're pretty much in the A main
- 48:30no matter what happens. And a lot of guys just rather be
- 48:32an A main to sit there and Dink and Dak in the B main get
- 48:35wrecked or something and they're bracing for 9th place, get
- 48:38caught up in a wreck. And now they got 100 and, you
- 48:40know, 60 miles to drive home the with a tour of race car.
- 48:43So that'd be interesting too with that Midwest series, you
- 48:45know, because they're not really anymore.
- 48:47It's more like Wawasso's basically doing it with the
- 48:50Kalamazoo and then Berlin, Berlin too.
- 48:52And so hopefully a lot of them guys still have those cars and
- 48:56want to keep running them. And because I know that they
- 48:58were really keen on a schedule, those different tracks.
- 49:01And sometimes when a track the series gets dropped, they like,
- 49:04OK, we're just, it's not for them just to race the same track
- 49:08or something. They'd rather go to a variety of
- 49:10tracks. Well, and I think, you know, how
- 49:12many Ohio cars can we get, you know, 'cause there's quite a bit
- 49:15of Ohio modifieds that are kind of homeless right now, so.
- 49:18Yeah, Lorraine out and Sandusky out too.
- 49:21And so it's how many of those guys come out, you know, with
- 49:25hot shoe moving to Kalamazoo this year too, it's like, could
- 49:28that impact, you know, how many acts should go, you know, maybe
- 49:31would make that trip to Owosso versus maybe they'll go over to
- 49:33new Paris? Because with hot shoe not at
- 49:35Owosso now you don't do they feel like they have to get as
- 49:38many laps in there to get the car tuned in for that huge race
- 49:41because now it's it's not there. So yeah, I, I don't know what to
- 49:46expect, but I, I know based on the racing this past Saturday
- 49:49and it's V eights only on, on this Saturday, but this past
- 49:53Saturday, if that's any indication of what it could be
- 49:55this weekend, you know, I, I hope people give new pairs a
- 49:58chance to come out and, and see and I just even the food, they
- 50:02have so many new food options this this year, even from the
- 50:05deep fried stuff. So if you like deep fried
- 50:07anything like Twix and I forget what the other candy thing was.
- 50:12I mean, there's so many options. So you know, if you don't come
- 50:15to often new new pairs, at least give them a chance this weekend
- 50:18because with the V eights there, you know, I know it's a $20
- 50:21ticket, so $5 more than normal, but if you knew the payout, you
- 50:25know, like that 5 bucks still isn't probably going to cover
- 50:28everything. It's a solid payoff.
- 50:30Plus you can still bring the grill, the cooler, you know,
- 50:32anything else and do it a cookout and everything else.
- 50:35And you can get a Volcano pizza, you know, so done a few times.
- 50:40I get frustrated sometimes when people go.
- 50:41Where's the crowd? OK well, they're sitting in
- 50:44their cars. They're you know, that's the
- 50:45thing that I think hurt hurts New Paris in a good way, is that
- 50:49people can literally sit in their cars and and watch the
- 50:52rainfall around you. People who are sitting on top of
- 50:54their trucks out in the parking lot.
- 50:56You know, you can Someone was drilling across the way that
- 50:59yeah, sometimes the bleachers may not look full, but it I
- 51:02promise you it's not like empty. They're they're sitting in their
- 51:05cars and there's tons of people under me that my camera wouldn't
- 51:08catch because there's too much in the but and then I always go,
- 51:12where were you? You know, like it's one of those
- 51:14you're on Facebook commenting. Where's the crowd?
- 51:17Well, where are you? You're commenting on Facebook.
- 51:19So obviously you're not at the track.
- 51:20So just shut the hell up, you know, kind of deal.
- 51:22Like no one even. When they did those one-on-one
- 51:25spectator races years ago and it'd be like 100 people in the
- 51:29stands, last race is done, then they get the spectator racers
- 51:31out there and all of a sudden another whole whoops, another
- 51:34whole group of people just show up.
- 51:35You know, it's like, Oh my God, where these guys come out of,
- 51:37you know, they were sleeping in their sleeping bags or something
- 51:40and up along the fence and hitting it and everything else
- 51:43and how simple those cars would make it around the track.
- 51:46I just looked at the wheels and then I'm like, my God, I can't
- 51:48even get my car to start and it's got four wheels that roll
- 51:51and some of these things look like they're about had it and
- 51:53they're just running around the track and everything else, you
- 51:55know? Well, I know Boozer's been quiet
- 51:58and I think he's about the burst from the scenes if he doesn't, I
- 52:03know he has a lot of names and he wanted to throw at you to get
- 52:06some stories. And this is just a reminder that
- 52:09I do want to remind everyone and I see, well, I'll do 2
- 52:11reminders. So Chris, Harry got in here from
- 52:14Hartford. They do have the throw down this
- 52:17weekend for monster trucks if people want to go watch monster
- 52:19trucks crush things over there at Hartford.
- 52:22They do open next week for weekly racing.
- 52:25So for everyone itching for that Hartford dirt and their French
- 52:27fries and coke and everything else next week, but monster
- 52:31trucks for this week for the throw down.
- 52:33And then I didn't want to remind.
- 52:36Oh, actually, now that I did that, I forgot.
- 52:39Oh, add your questions in the in the comments.
- 52:42Certainly, you know, we'll pop them up here.
- 52:44So that Drew Drew, Oh my gosh, I cannot talk.
- 52:47I all because of that and monster truck thing.
- 52:49Thanks, Chris. But anyways, I had my train of
- 52:52thought and it went sideways here.
- 52:55Derailed. But anyways, you know, pop your
- 52:58questions in the comments and everything.
- 52:59That way you know Ron can answer them, I think.
- 53:02Ron, dump the panel as they call it.
- 53:04Yeah, we have probably about 8:40 again.
- 53:07Is that when you have? Yeah, I got my hair all prettied
- 53:10up already, so I got to do is just jump in the car and go, so.
- 53:14Like a 15 minute drive. Yeah, all but 3.8 miles, but
- 53:18it's a 15 minute haul. But you know, South Bend is good
- 53:21for like you drive to the next red light.
- 53:23You can see the light green as you're getting there.
- 53:25And just as you pull up, it just decides it's going to turn red.
- 53:27Then you sit there and you sit there, and then you go to the
- 53:29next one and then the next one. Yeah, So definitely we have a
- 53:34little less than an hour with Ron, so it's certainly a lot
- 53:36more time to go. But Buju, you have been way too
- 53:39quiet for like 30 minutes here. So I think that's probably a
- 53:42record, you know, for you and I, you're excited for this.
- 53:46So go you've. Talked about the your all the
- 53:52great traveling series of the past.
- 53:54So instead of going to the past, I'm going to ask you about the
- 53:56present. What are the traveling series
- 53:58that you're a big fan of these days?
- 54:01Oh boy, that's a really good question there, because with me
- 54:04with Mclawn, I'm very limited where I can actually go on.
- 54:07You know, that's a 320 already. But I would say the high limit
- 54:10Sprint series, even the brode of Allah's, they got some really
- 54:13good presents on TV. And if you don't have the
- 54:16subscription, you can watch it the next day, you know, like on
- 54:19on YouTube, the tape delay and watch the races.
- 54:22And they've they've been doing a good job with interviews and you
- 54:25know, up on the stuff there and the camera works been really
- 54:27good. Boy.
- 54:29Other than that, I would say probably the stars series is
- 54:32pretty good. You got some guys that are
- 54:33committed. I mean, like Winchester, they
- 54:35had 26 cars there last year. And most of those guys are
- 54:38really out of pretty much out of Wisconsin.
- 54:40Thank God for the ASA series kind of combining with that
- 54:42stars deal and getting some guys come over even from to
- 54:45Winchester from that. But those guys are all coming
- 54:47from Florida, North Carolina and even, you know, down South, so
- 54:51they're doing a lot of hauling just to get up to do them shows
- 54:53at Winchester, Toledo. I think Owosso's got that week
- 54:56night or weekday show too as well over there.
- 55:00Boy, other than series, I had to think about this because they
- 55:03don't really cover series like they used to.
- 55:06I know that Hell Tour, something else is coming up. 29 races in
- 55:0940 days. And we followed that for a
- 55:11couple days here and there and that that's that's, that's,
- 55:15that's a third. You know, on dirt track, your
- 55:16setups, you're going to get dirty doing that and it's, you
- 55:19know, so you get to the drive to the next track, you clean up a
- 55:22little bit and you're at the track.
- 55:23And then it's always been pretty hot.
- 55:25It's always a day where it's pretty hot and you're, you know,
- 55:28like it just really wears. Yeah.
- 55:29You got to make sure you can't just drink pop and candy.
- 55:31You got to have some water in your system too, to do that kind
- 55:33of stuff. Boy, I mean, All Star sprints.
- 55:37I mean, they're starting to do I make the Great Lakes series is
- 55:39pretty good. They get over at Hartford All
- 55:41Stars. They're starting to just rebrand
- 55:43themselves after being away from last year.
- 55:46They're a lot more Ohio series base.
- 55:48They're going to try to bounce out a little bit there.
- 55:50They're great. Oh goodness, Andy's Andy series,
- 55:54you know, getting the guys on dirt and kind of get them over
- 55:56on the pavement and kind of back and forth there and some of the
- 55:59variety there. Goodness, I'm going to say
- 56:03that's going to be pretty about most of what I would really
- 56:05follow other than just seeing dibbets and stuff on, you know,
- 56:09Facebook and stuff like that. And because once we just start
- 56:12doing that down South stuff, you're pretty you're pretty
- 56:15consumed with the interviews and then the pictures.
- 56:18And then if we're doing a lap board and you know, it's just it
- 56:22kind of ties it down a little bit, especially, you know, full
- 56:24time job too. So it's like you're really kind
- 56:28of hindrance in what you can do because I know them guys are
- 56:30being built at Kankakee. Come on, bring your books.
- 56:32I'm like, man, that's 250 and that's another 320 on top of
- 56:35Mclawn. That's a 600 weekend, you know,
- 56:37so I'm I'm pretty parched right now just doing a 40 or a
- 56:40Hartford Mclawn weekend there. I mean, it's we're talking about
- 56:44travel there. You know, earlier, even last
- 56:46Saturday night and Bobby said travel is not for everyone.
- 56:49They don't a lot of people. It's like, I mean, what Lewis
- 56:51does is pretty, pretty damn crazy there.
- 56:54And I mean what we're doing, it's like people are just like,
- 56:57man, I would never do that. And you don't really see too
- 56:59many people that travel more than an hour to a racetrack.
- 57:02And that's where you're, you know, like when they get
- 57:04promoters and they want to set a show up, try to keep those your
- 57:07bases really within 45 miles of the track.
- 57:10And how do you market it? Do you do Facebook?
- 57:12Do you know, do you do radio TVI don't know if that would work so
- 57:15much. Hopefully I have some some
- 57:18sponsors get on Lewis's show and do some sponsors on air.
- 57:21You know, little clips and stuff about their shows coming up.
- 57:23Even for a nominal Vita, people watching know what's going on,
- 57:27but that's pretty much about it. I mean, I mean, I know my blonde
- 57:31schedule. I'm going to try to piggyback
- 57:34Lewis on a couple shows when I'm freed up that way and then try
- 57:37to get the 40 and a Hartford two shows there.
- 57:40And I mean, I'm trying to try to watch that super modified series
- 57:43out of Ohio at 360. Now they're traveling like the
- 57:45Wheelman is. And it'll be interesting to see
- 57:47if those guys want to do these 220 trips, 240 trips every other
- 57:51week or so. It's it's a lot different than
- 57:53doing a 30 mile drive. I am be the first to test to
- 57:56that. So we do have a question from
- 57:59the chat. Scotty Slusher is curious if you
- 58:01remember Cindy and Lou's tow vehicle, Cindy and loose Jeremy,
- 58:04that would be obviously. Their tow vehicle now I remember
- 58:07that hauler. That was the black rollback that
- 58:10had the white body on it. I think that was one that Nyery
- 58:15had for a while and then Lou got a hold of it, if that's what
- 58:19we're talking about there. And that was a big old one.
- 58:21I mean, Kirkman had a Rick Kirkman.
- 58:23Dick Kirkman had one too, and then Rick had one as well, like
- 58:25a rollback. There wasn't too many rollbacks
- 58:27up north up here, but that was one of the the haulers that they
- 58:31had back in the day. Boy, I'm trying to think any
- 58:35nothing else really stood out of anything.
- 58:37I remember I got a picture of Lou sleeping one night at South
- 58:39Bend on the hauler. I had a picture of him sleeping.
- 58:43Melissa Stemis was sleeping one night and I was kind of like
- 58:47almost within like a different year or two apart there.
- 58:49So I kept I would post that picture.
- 58:51Come on Lou, wake up. It's time to race.
- 58:53But you might have been. Yeah, you mentioned earlier that
- 58:59being so taken back by Dylan and Nick racing now.
- 59:03So what are your earliest memories of Dremies racing?
- 59:06Now that we're into the on to this generation, even Hayden's
- 59:08race, many wedges and so forth. But, well, that's like, what are
- 59:12the earliest? Memories of stremies.
- 59:14Oh, the earliest memory, like say I was helping Fred Malecki
- 59:17and this guy was going through the pits holding the boy and
- 59:19there's other, his wife was holding another child.
- 59:21And that was Lou asking about getting race cars, asking a lot
- 59:24of questions about getting into racing.
- 59:26And Fred was like, who is that? And this guy's name is Luke
- 59:28Stremi. You know, he's going to try to
- 59:30get a stock car and he end up buying Bill Wingate's car
- 59:32eventually there for the following year.
- 59:34And actually, I think he raced it at Anderson.
- 59:37I'm going to say because I wasn't Fort Wayne at ITT.
- 59:40I think it was 1981. He took it in a September race
- 59:42at went at Anderson for a street stock and there was a silver 53
- 59:46there. And I caught a glimpse of it and
- 59:48there was about 30 cars on the track.
- 59:49And that was like they I said, I think that's Luke Stremi, that
- 59:52guy that he just bought. That's a Winggate car.
- 59:54And then he won his first race at Kalamazoo the following year
- 59:56in a Thunder car class on a Sunday afternoon with the
- 59:59supers. And that was 82.
- 1:00:01That was, I was 83 for that super mod, so I might have been
- 1:00:0482 that he had that car at Anderson for the first ever
- 1:00:07race. Then I say then Cindy started
- 1:00:10racing. That was kind of funny.
- 1:00:12When Cindy would race, she could beat and bang them.
- 1:00:14Cars at New Paris mostly had other tracks.
- 1:00:17And there the fans would go crazy.
- 1:00:18Boy, the minute they retaliated, Oh my God, their fans were ready
- 1:00:21to, you know, form a posse and go down there and beat the guy's
- 1:00:23butt, you know? But once they shouldn't get away
- 1:00:26with murder. But, you know, she had a little
- 1:00:28bit more leeway. And I think we're even talking
- 1:00:30about that show and that last episode when Steve Teske was
- 1:00:34tipped at her and they had a red flag at South Bend there.
- 1:00:37And he Steve got out of his car on the back stretch and he was
- 1:00:40in turn 4 and he's running across the track.
- 1:00:42He's going to take her apart. By the time he got to the car,
- 1:00:45he couldn't even breathe. He had tears.
- 1:00:46And you know, I was like just huffing and puffing.
- 1:00:48And they just hauled him away. And he was like, I'm I couldn't
- 1:00:50even, I couldn't even talk after that because he was just, he was
- 1:00:54a big boy back then. He was like 220 linebacker
- 1:00:56running the 50 yard dash and he he was built for the 10 yard
- 1:01:00dash. But I think I even mentioned
- 1:01:02that to Steve at the car show one year and he says you would
- 1:01:04have to remember that. You know, I said in front of
- 1:01:064000 people too. So it's Tusky, you're out of
- 1:01:10here. So that was the deal.
- 1:01:13There was Cindy. But yeah, she won her first ever
- 1:01:15championship. And you know, Lynch, you know,
- 1:01:18ran a lot of new pairs of Plymouth and you know, Montville
- 1:01:22Thunder. You know, when the Ralph had a
- 1:01:24Southwest Michigan because we're up there with Bobby Rubleski a
- 1:01:27few nights and that's when Lou and Cindy were racing up there.
- 1:01:29That was another good time too, because he had McLaughlin up
- 1:01:31there and Lee Slayton and then he had Andy Bozell coming down.
- 1:01:35So he had quite a few talented. And you know what, they didn't
- 1:01:38really have a super late model class where they had like kind
- 1:01:40of a sportsman class, which is like South Bend's top class.
- 1:01:43And he had, you know, like Bobby was in that mix and Chet
- 1:01:46Schwischer was in there and Stan Kerry 150.
- 1:01:50I used out of the why Jack and Zachary was in that mix, Jerry
- 1:01:53Zachary. So they had some pretty good,
- 1:01:55pretty good cars back then. It was kind of like that, say
- 1:01:57like a limited. And then they had the Bill
- 1:01:59Clewell class with the the Thunder car.
- 1:02:01Then they had like a pure stock class and Ralph was pulling 90
- 1:02:04cars a week. Sometimes we go to Southwest for
- 1:02:06a 90 car show, get out of there, then shoot down a new pairs.
- 1:02:09Then you'll be able to see the intermission on the, you know,
- 1:02:12the rest of the feature races. What class are you surprised
- 1:02:16because even the first episode where we had you on a few weeks
- 1:02:20ago, you've mentioned a lot of different classes, a lot of
- 1:02:23different things for, you know, a lot of these people in this,
- 1:02:26you know, race fans now in this generation, they may not know
- 1:02:29like the tri-state. Would you talk about in that
- 1:02:31first episode? So what class, in your opinion,
- 1:02:35what classes kind of come around that you thought, man, this is
- 1:02:37really going to take off and then it just died like it went
- 1:02:41nowhere or it was over height and like this is going to change
- 1:02:45everything and then they did nothing.
- 1:02:47Yeah, something I kind of grew up and I didn't follow it early
- 1:02:50enough. We think start, we start about
- 1:02:5273. My dad and I was ASA, the
- 1:02:55basically the ASA late model division.
- 1:02:57That's all they had was the one division.
- 1:02:59And I mean we would, you know, like a late model is a late
- 1:03:02model. I remember Jim Blunt ran one
- 1:03:04track one night. The next night he's racing the
- 1:03:06Red Bud 400. I mean, you could do that with
- 1:03:07the cars. They were just, that was all the
- 1:03:09cars were illegal and we would do Toledo, we would do
- 1:03:12Winchester and Raceway Park. Then he had Arco, which was more
- 1:03:15Wisconsin based, but you know, it was like taking off this,
- 1:03:19doing really good. And then next thing you know,
- 1:03:21TNN got the series. They're showing those races at
- 1:03:24Milwaukee, Saint Paul, IRP, Winchester.
- 1:03:27Then it's like, oh, we're going to go to San Antonio, TX and
- 1:03:30we're going to go to the Vancouver and I'm like, wow,
- 1:03:34this is a lot more travel. I mean, a lot of us are like
- 1:03:37we're not going to go that far. I think Charlie Hannah would
- 1:03:39have a story with that because he got an ASA car and I think
- 1:03:43the first races were rained out and he went to like the I think
- 1:03:46San Antonio for a race couldn't even wasn't even in the show
- 1:03:50because he took the top guys from points from the year
- 1:03:52before. I think the first show was like
- 1:03:53in Florida. I mean last well, that was a lot
- 1:03:55more traveling what they were used to, and it took about three
- 1:03:58years after that and then poof, you know, they tried to go to
- 1:04:01like a a restrictive block motor for it and then guys were
- 1:04:05accused of Jimmying them up and that and then the series just
- 1:04:08went away and then they kind of kicked it back up again a few
- 1:04:11years ago and a lot of people. So I thought the ASA was no, no
- 1:04:13more. And it's like, well, they're
- 1:04:14just using the name ASA for a stock looking glass.
- 1:04:17But back in the day, my God, he had trickle Mark Martin.
- 1:04:21He had LJ lines Bob straight out of floss more.
- 1:04:25And then you had your, you know, the Randy sweets and Eddie vent.
- 1:04:28You know, Vanderlaan earlier in the days there, John Anderson
- 1:04:31from Ohio, Moose Myers roll in and they'd say Jim Blunt would
- 1:04:35be in there. Diary jigs Myers, Dave Sort from
- 1:04:38Fort Wayne and just Chuck Romeo. I mean, you just had guys from
- 1:04:42that. The best of the best would be
- 1:04:43there for races and Alec. Kawicki, Rusty, Wallace, all
- 1:04:47kinds of names. Yeah, Wallace came in there and
- 1:04:49Kawicki and that. I was just, I remember even a
- 1:04:52Wisconsin guy would always have that Wisconsin flag at
- 1:04:55Winchester. He'd wave it in the stands when
- 1:04:57they would do the parade and all that stuff.
- 1:04:59And now I remember even a story with ASA was like 7475 Willie
- 1:05:03Stutzman's there and he makes the ASA race and all the drivers
- 1:05:07are shaking hands with the owner.
- 1:05:09And then they kissed a trophy girl.
- 1:05:10Well, really runs up and he does his little jog with his arms,
- 1:05:13you know, like he's in a hurry. And he walks up to the trophy
- 1:05:16girl and he shakes his hand of all things.
- 1:05:18And he goes up to the Roger Holdeman and gives him a kiss.
- 1:05:20And the fans will fuck. That was just the nuts thing,
- 1:05:23you know, I'm like, you know, my God.
- 1:05:25Oh my God, Willie. It's just, you know, do we know
- 1:05:27him or not? You know, but I don't think
- 1:05:30Rodger was expecting that as well with Willie, but quite the
- 1:05:33character he was whenever he was racing and you know, then he'd
- 1:05:37say he went on to God. Then he was racing the limited
- 1:05:40supermods and he bought an Oswego supermod and I was doing
- 1:05:44some of the travel shows with ISMA and Pennsylvania.
- 1:05:48He's in New York, he's in Canada.
- 1:05:50It's still, you know, nothing for him to be at Sandusky,
- 1:05:52Mansfield. I mean, he was traveling even at
- 1:05:546568 years old, retired, of course, had a big motorhome, but
- 1:05:59always a character in the pits. And he was always a lot of fun.
- 1:06:03And, you know, he maybe didn't win a lot of races, but I don't
- 1:06:06remember Denny and Irie says, boy, Willie's keeping me in
- 1:06:08business because Willie crashes so many cars.
- 1:06:10I get to fix them every week. He says that guy just had one
- 1:06:13car and didn't bracket. He says, man, he would think
- 1:06:16about the money he would have, but he would he would always
- 1:06:18have. He had a Grand Marquis car.
- 1:06:19He had a super Mod and he'd had the Late Model and they even had
- 1:06:23that pace car. If you remember that back in the
- 1:06:25day, that 88, that Cavalier was a pace car at South Bend.
- 1:06:28It looked like his Grand Marquis car.
- 1:06:33Go ahead, Bruju. Can I know you have more so?
- 1:06:37Yeah. You so you mentioned those ASA
- 1:06:39days and I've become a big fan of those.
- 1:06:41I've been watching a lot of early 80s late or ASA races with
- 1:06:45Mark Martin and Rusty and Bobby and Bobby Allison.
- 1:06:48You'd have Dale Earnhardt dip up.
- 1:06:50From the South. And run those ASA races and he'd
- 1:06:52get his tail kicked in by those Butch Miller's and Bob Senecres
- 1:06:56and those guys are running up here weekly.
- 1:06:58Just another great time for racing like you mentioned
- 1:07:00earlier. Yeah, and Bobby even raced up in
- 1:07:02Minnesota, you know, with ARCO and stuff and they had AI have
- 1:07:05an article that was actually put in one of the books this about
- 1:07:08last over the last about 3 or 4 months ago.
- 1:07:12And they questioned Bobby because he went up to race up at
- 1:07:14Minnesota Shakopee and they said why are you doing?
- 1:07:17You know the guy says why are you kind of doing this kind of
- 1:07:20stuff? And he's like, you know he says
- 1:07:22this is this is a lot of racers would love to race against me.
- 1:07:25He says I actually like to race against some of these guys
- 1:07:27because these are some of the best in the Midwest.
- 1:07:29He says, I follow racing like everybody else.
- 1:07:31And he says that's a little bit of a drive, but I I can afford
- 1:07:35it. And you know, he says it's you
- 1:07:36know, my pride might get hurt by getting the Ethernet 10th or
- 1:07:3915th, but he says it's still fun.
- 1:07:41And he's like, he says, hey, them guys Trickle Reffner, you
- 1:07:46know, Schuler's up there and like, say the the Wisconsin
- 1:07:49boys, He says, hey, them Joe Shearer Bickel, he says, and
- 1:07:52them boys, some pretty good racers.
- 1:07:54He says you would have put he put Mike Eddy in NASCAR years
- 1:07:57ago and he probably would have been one of the top drivers too.
- 1:07:59He says these guys are just as talent as what we were.
- 1:08:01He says they we just had the opportunity being down South and
- 1:08:04everything was down South. He says you guys are up north.
- 1:08:07Not too many guys, you know, made the transgression to go
- 1:08:10back down South and do that stuff.
- 1:08:11I mean, Butch did and you know, Tony Rains did to a point and
- 1:08:15Mark Martin did of course there. But not a lot of northern guys
- 1:08:19really transgressed down to the South and really became, you
- 1:08:22know, the big NASCAR deal. Now, Carson after last
- 1:08:25yesterday, now in the right place at the right time with
- 1:08:28NASCAR. It's almost like it's like club
- 1:08:30racing. It's like, you know, everybody's
- 1:08:32so competitive and you're all about the same speed.
- 1:08:34It's just matter who's lucky at the right place at the right
- 1:08:36time. And he would have been one more
- 1:08:38knocked out tire in that wreck. That would have been it for him.
- 1:08:40But you know, he just let's say he was right there.
- 1:08:43And I hate to see that comparison to Earnhardt because
- 1:08:45the kids still young. He's made a couple moves.
- 1:08:49He's won a couple races, but he hasn't won not anything of a
- 1:08:52championship at this point with that.
- 1:08:54Don't put all that heat on Carson.
- 1:08:56You know you're going to expect him to make some kind of silly
- 1:08:58move every week. It's like none of that team
- 1:09:00ain't going to be able to, you know, they probably say you got
- 1:09:02to settle down a little bit here.
- 1:09:04You know, we, you know, we got cars, but man, we just can't, we
- 1:09:07can't be totaling things every week or anything there.
- 1:09:11Yeah, it's it feels very unfair that he gets there in hard
- 1:09:13comparison all the time. But it does feel that there's
- 1:09:15some sort of buzz around Carson right now.
- 1:09:17It does feel like he's kind of becoming the guy in that.
- 1:09:20And the crowd went nuts for him yesterday when he was hanging
- 1:09:23out the front window out there going down the front stretch.
- 1:09:25Yeah, very cool that were the bad boys got out of racing here.
- 1:09:29I mean, Kurt Busch, he's not reading the limelight so much
- 1:09:33anymore. Kyle Busch, yeah, he's here,
- 1:09:35there. He's arguing with his team.
- 1:09:36You know, his his owners Morning is you know, because he used to
- 1:09:39get kind of mouthy on TV. People like that Harvick be like
- 1:09:42a little bit of controversy. You would have he had near calm
- 1:09:46guys like Ricky Rudd. I mean they just finished the
- 1:09:47race. Terry Labonte.
- 1:09:49They would finish the race by the Labonte would finish the
- 1:09:50race. He get on Earnhardt and he just
- 1:09:52say something that fans would be wow.
- 1:09:54I like what he says to those reporters.
- 1:09:56I like what he says to NASCAR and Carson's kind of like doing
- 1:09:59some things and like say it's kind of like, and this guy's a
- 1:10:02little bit of a wild child a little bit.
- 1:10:04And he's a little different cut than some of these other guys.
- 1:10:07The other guys are almost kind of so prescribed or like set
- 1:10:11when they talk and it's like they only there's only certain
- 1:10:14hand movement, eye movement and they only want to talk about
- 1:10:16sponsors or, you know, Carson's just kind of little more open
- 1:10:20and you know, he can ask him something off the key and like
- 1:10:23he talks back. And some of these other guys, I
- 1:10:25think they kind of struggle to talk.
- 1:10:28Yeah. There's there's something
- 1:10:29authentic about him. I think you still feel the short
- 1:10:32tracks that he came from. He talks and he talked and I
- 1:10:34think it was on the Dale Junior show he's on last year that he
- 1:10:36was just the kid at Kalamazoo and he still feels like the kid
- 1:10:39from Kalamazoo. And I think it shows through and
- 1:10:42when, when he's hanging out the front door or hanging out the
- 1:10:44front of the car hanging, celebrating his first Cup wins.
- 1:10:47Yeah, he kind of like he took that chance because, I mean, he
- 1:10:49was still learning the ropes at Berlin racing from Kalamazoo
- 1:10:53and, you know, you know, doing this, you know, CRA stuff and
- 1:10:56that and having some good runs. And it's like there was that
- 1:10:59opportunity to just like put everything on the line and go.
- 1:11:02And he could have said, oh, man, let me wait about four or five
- 1:11:05years, let me get more season, let me get more settled.
- 1:11:07But he's like, let's go and he's making it work.
- 1:11:10And you know, it's it's it's high risk, high reward, that's
- 1:11:14for sure. They're doing that kind of
- 1:11:15stuff. And, and now he's like talk of
- 1:11:17talk of the state or talk of the area for sure.
- 1:11:19There, but NASCAR needed. This too.
- 1:11:22NASCAR needed this kid to win something like that too.
- 1:11:24I. Was going to say it was all over
- 1:11:26Facebook. I didn't even have to watch and
- 1:11:28I knew what I was going on. And I think like, you know,
- 1:11:31Chris, you know who I'm sure you saw it in 40.
- 1:11:34I mean, she's a huge host, host of our fans.
- 1:11:36So I imagine, you know, all of her feelings that were going on
- 1:11:40and and she was actually quiet on Facebook.
- 1:11:43Buja, I don't know if you saw her.
- 1:11:43She's quiet. So people are messaging her and
- 1:11:46like, are you OK? Like we would have, you know, a
- 1:11:50big burst of energy here online. I do want to do a quick shout
- 1:11:54out really quick. We have Will on here.
- 1:11:56If you ever want to listen to the Wild Will, I want to make
- 1:12:01sure I say it right, Will the Wild will throw down.
- 1:12:05You've probably heard him on Pit Rd.
- 1:12:07TV. If you watch Speedrome and Salem
- 1:12:09and all that, he definitely does a lot down in that area count,
- 1:12:12you know, so he sees the convicts down there.
- 1:12:15He was at Lorraine last year. For he announced Mclawn for a
- 1:12:19year too. Yep.
- 1:12:20And him and Herw Adams. Yep.
- 1:12:22And definitely if you see him, you know he's always selling
- 1:12:25shirts and those go to different proceeds.
- 1:12:27So definitely, you know, follow him on social media.
- 1:12:31I just saw that he popped in and, you know, to have someone
- 1:12:34like him listen to the rewind and watch that, it's like, OK,
- 1:12:37wow, that's pretty cool. I mean, he treated me with so
- 1:12:39much respect last year at Lorraine.
- 1:12:41You know, Pit Rd. TV had the rights to it or no,
- 1:12:44it wasn't. It's Painesville because that's
- 1:12:46where the Buckeye was. So not Lorraine, but
- 1:12:47Painesville. And I heard Top Rd. just as
- 1:12:50often as I heard Pit Row. And I'm like, man, you know,
- 1:12:52they got the streaming rights here.
- 1:12:53I'm just some, you know, I, you know, up in the corner over
- 1:12:56here. But he kept doing lots of shout
- 1:12:58outs for me and and all that. So again, I just that I'm a big
- 1:13:01fan of Will, but I saw that he popped on here.
- 1:13:03So I want to make sure that you were talking earlier about Ron
- 1:13:06and exposure and everything else.
- 1:13:08And he's definitely someone who brings a lot of exposure to
- 1:13:10short track racing, especially in central IN.
- 1:13:13So definitely someone to go watching and follow online.
- 1:13:17And I know he does like pre shows and everything from Salem
- 1:13:20a couple times. He's some pre show.
- 1:13:21So definitely give him a follow because kind of like Ron, like
- 1:13:25with you, you know, he has those stories and he just does so well
- 1:13:28on the mic. But I didn't know he was at
- 1:13:30Mount Lawn. Yeah, him and Harold did it for
- 1:13:32a year and it was that was good. I mean, I, I think we have an
- 1:13:36announcer for full time this year.
- 1:13:37I'm hoping. I mean, I don't mind announcing,
- 1:13:39but you know, kind of takes away from doing photos and stuff.
- 1:13:41But it I still get to do my talking out on the infield and
- 1:13:45all that good stuff there. But then when he announced, it's
- 1:13:47like especially when we had the computer go down and we, you
- 1:13:50know, can't relay a whole lot of information.
- 1:13:51I just go on a lot of stuff on who's who and kind of go from
- 1:13:54there, but it's still kind of cool to do that.
- 1:13:57And especially it's like you get all that running around in the
- 1:14:00infield taking photos when you announce, you just go up and
- 1:14:03down them steps and it's like how many more times I got to go
- 1:14:05from the announcers, move down them steps all the way down them
- 1:14:07other steps and then onto the track.
- 1:14:09But it's still fun and and I'll try to throw bracing terms out
- 1:14:13and what I know of history and you know, everybody's got a
- 1:14:16different style announcement. You know, they someone I just
- 1:14:18read the you know, just exactly what's in front of them and or
- 1:14:21some kind of live and you know, you will never hear me scream or
- 1:14:25holler on there or anything like that.
- 1:14:26And people have a heart attack or anything like that.
- 1:14:28Just just kind of like almost like Mr. Bunn up there at
- 1:14:31Hartford. I like how his style is.
- 1:14:33He just has that hometown name and just subtle, you know, just
- 1:14:37says the name and you know, he just he just announces like, you
- 1:14:39know, Amsutz was a good one too for that man to there, Jim
- 1:14:42Amsutz out of Fort Wayne. I was like, listen to him and
- 1:14:46everybody's different how they announced.
- 1:14:47So for sure there. Well, next, do you think too
- 1:14:51like that? Is that why people navigate
- 1:14:53maybe to like we've been talk about Carson, right, You know,
- 1:14:55he's just a different different vibe.
- 1:14:58Then you know what probably many people mean there for a while.
- 1:15:02You know, a lot of people just stepped away from NASCAR and and
- 1:15:05I don't I don't watch NASCAR. I just don't have any.
- 1:15:09I don't have any desire to watch NASCAR.
- 1:15:11I may be weird about that. I just I don't you know, I watch
- 1:15:14local racing. I watch all the local people.
- 1:15:16I'll keep up with drivers who, you know, I've met Bristol and
- 1:15:20other places just to see what they're doing.
- 1:15:22But like, I watched the Daytona only because I wanted to see the
- 1:15:25MJ stuff. You know, like if you didn't
- 1:15:28watch the last dance, you don't know what you're getting into
- 1:15:30NASCAR because a pretty motivated guy, he has a target.
- 1:15:33You know, he's he's going to do what he can to win.
- 1:15:36He's motivated by a lot of different things and he finds
- 1:15:38his motivation. So that's the reason why I
- 1:15:41watched Daytona, but otherwise I've not watched NASCAR race
- 1:15:43since then. Like it just, they're like, it
- 1:15:46got to a point where I'm like this, this is boring.
- 1:15:49I can do a lot of other things on TV right now, then watch
- 1:15:51this. And so, so with that, do you
- 1:15:55think even to why some people maybe navigate to certain
- 1:15:57announcers? Like I know you've announced and
- 1:15:59you get on the mic for Michigan and vintage racers and and you
- 1:16:02get storytelling with yours. And so you even present
- 1:16:05different than like when you get someone on there who's stats and
- 1:16:09stat driven. So do you think maybe that's why
- 1:16:13too, you notice in racing people navigating towards like Carson
- 1:16:17just because of that vibe? And I wonder and I'm having, I
- 1:16:20don't really watch NASCAR religiously by any stretch, but
- 1:16:22I see him smiling a lot and I see him with he can see his eyes
- 1:16:26and he look at like an awesome Dylan.
- 1:16:27He's always got the dark black glasses on and he's got like the
- 1:16:30cowboy hat on. And, you know, you don't know
- 1:16:34what their eyes, if they're all eyes, they're closed or they're
- 1:16:36open. And it's like that, you know,
- 1:16:38seeing somebody with their eyes, you can see their eyes and their
- 1:16:40facial expressions. It's just like maybe something
- 1:16:43different. I could be wrong on all that,
- 1:16:44but it's what I've seen, of course.
- 1:16:46And he's always psyching. No, no sunglasses on, no dark
- 1:16:49glasses and smiling. And he just seems loose for
- 1:16:53them. Other guys are kind of like
- 1:16:54almost like a robotic, you know? And even when they do an
- 1:16:57interview, they know I say you got to take them, take them damn
- 1:16:59sunglasses off. You know, at least this is what
- 1:17:01the eyes look like, you know, and but it's just like 2, you
- 1:17:04know, like the mole people or something.
- 1:17:06You know, they talk during that. But that guy that might be too.
- 1:17:09And like I say, they've got to get some kind of new flavor on
- 1:17:12that race scene and you know, something to keep it going
- 1:17:14because some of those guys names are, you know, you watch them
- 1:17:17race, but there's really nothing no side stories with them or
- 1:17:20anything like that. I mean, Chastain broke a
- 1:17:21watermelon on the race track. Some of them other guys that you
- 1:17:24know, they do this and that, but I mean, they might talk to them
- 1:17:26on a rain delay or something. But like, I don't watch a whole
- 1:17:29lot of NASCAR number when they're on.
- 1:17:30It's it's like catching up on sleep.
- 1:17:32And then the yard yesterday was all, you know, five hours of the
- 1:17:35yard work with cutting all the grass, my dad's house and my
- 1:17:38house. And you know, then might watch
- 1:17:40the tail end of a race or something like that.
- 1:17:42But you know, something like you go back to IndyCar, how some of
- 1:17:46those drivers were more, you know, Danny Sullivan was one
- 1:17:48that people really like to watch mirrors was more talking
- 1:17:51calculated AJ people like AJ because, well, he would just
- 1:17:54ball them either his crew out or he would ball the officials out.
- 1:17:57There's times where Amy, he voices opinion on different
- 1:18:00things and you know, some of those drivers are like that.
- 1:18:04Then you go to USAC, you know, and then like, say I interviewed
- 1:18:06Kaylee Bryson and she's 1. I don't think I've ever seen her
- 1:18:09dark sunglasses on at a USAC race.
- 1:18:11She's always like smiling and this a fan favorite.
- 1:18:14And then she won. Her first one is a USAC silver
- 1:18:17crown race, first to bleed 96 laps at Du Coin.
- 1:18:20And I interviewed her I was like 5 years ago now.
- 1:18:23And then she was like, that was one of her first interviews,
- 1:18:25kinda her first pavement race at IRP and real personable kid
- 1:18:30McKenna Haas talked, interviewed her at Plymouth when she came
- 1:18:33for a race that got rained out from Iowa.
- 1:18:35And now, you know, she's making strides and racing and you know,
- 1:18:38it's but some people are kind of stoked when they do interviews.
- 1:18:42They're kind of like, you know that man just, you know, afraid
- 1:18:44to talk or afraid to, you know, kind of trying to talk too
- 1:18:48calculated. And that makes it kind of like
- 1:18:52like say robotic kind on that form there.
- 1:18:54It's kind of hard. Like what do you ask them now?
- 1:18:56You know, it's like to loosen them up or something here.
- 1:18:58You know, it's always like when we when Rich Bowl would win,
- 1:19:04well, he would tell it like it is.
- 1:19:06You know, he'd complain about somebody or something or restart
- 1:19:09or something. And even Danny Brown, he's
- 1:19:12always a good interview too and stuff.
- 1:19:13Austin, he was really good. You know, I kind of like when he
- 1:19:17would win so damn much. It's like, God, what do I ask
- 1:19:19him? What's his hobbies?
- 1:19:20What's his favorite food? You know, I'm like, you know, he
- 1:19:23does it again. You know, all the Maynards were
- 1:19:25like that. But but some of those interviews
- 1:19:27were pretty fun and you know, like, say sometimes those guys
- 1:19:30got their first ever wins and they're like, you know, Leroy
- 1:19:33Luna, like he was a something in the clown and a half me on his
- 1:19:37first race and that, you know, and his family celebrating.
- 1:19:39And he was just like, like speechless.
- 1:19:42And I said, Leroy, you finally won a race.
- 1:19:44I mean, you guys are bringing 8-9 cars to the racetrack.
- 1:19:46And you know, then he had that one kid that one night won a
- 1:19:49race. It was one of the sea mains or
- 1:19:50something. His little kid, he's probably
- 1:19:52about 5 to 90 lbs and he stood on top of the car man and bands
- 1:19:56went pretty crazy over him. But something out of the
- 1:20:00ordinary, you just, you know, make it stand out and, you know,
- 1:20:04be that, be that person. So talking, so talking about
- 1:20:07Carson, making it from the local area all the way to NASCAR,
- 1:20:11thinking back, who is somebody that you thought maybe should
- 1:20:14have had that big shot but never quite made it out of this area?
- 1:20:17Well, you know, you kind of think Nayari, you know, would
- 1:20:20have been a possibility there with all the races he won.
- 1:20:24You know, like I say, he was just probably northern and Mike
- 1:20:25Getty was another one. He was hard charger and ASA and
- 1:20:28he never really went to NASCAR And I'm, you know, and I'm I'm
- 1:20:31sure he could have had opportunities there.
- 1:20:36Boy, like it was good to see David do like what he did there
- 1:20:38and Ryan Newman, of course, you know those guys made their marks
- 1:20:42there. You know, other guys.
- 1:20:44It's you go over the years, maybe Brian Tyler with the
- 1:20:49Sprint car racing, you know, maybe you know, go sick and
- 1:20:53Bentley Warren, especially with the Super mods them them two
- 1:20:55guys there one everything I know go sick went and ran IndyCar a
- 1:20:58couple times. Bentley, you know, I don't know
- 1:21:01if he ran an IndyCar or not, but I mean he could win in anything
- 1:21:04he was in. And sometimes they get, you
- 1:21:07know, where they're just really comfortable racing what they
- 1:21:08were in and doing stuff there. I mean, Davy Hamilton senior
- 1:21:13seen him race Super Maz and knowing him and then he had he
- 1:21:16raced some IRL and got in that bad wreck and then that kind of
- 1:21:19really hindered his career. And now David Junior is racing,
- 1:21:22you know, the Sprint cars. Bobby Santos, he's one that
- 1:21:25right now that I mean he's a threat and silver Crown Midget
- 1:21:29Sprint, the 500 series and a real hard charger.
- 1:21:33I mean, he would be another one. He don't know if he's really
- 1:21:35going to want to do the backing to try do a NASCAR thing and
- 1:21:39IndyCar. It's really kind of selective.
- 1:21:41There's not too many American guys that are really jumping
- 1:21:43into that series just the way it's set up anymore.
- 1:21:46And you know, the old days with, you know, going to open wheel.
- 1:21:49Steve Kins, there was another one he did IROC.
- 1:21:52I think he ran one Indy 500 when it was the IRL.
- 1:21:55And then that was really kind of about it for him.
- 1:21:57And I mean, he won everything you could think of in Sammy
- 1:22:00Swindell. He went into the Truck Series
- 1:22:02for a couple years. Rico Abreu.
- 1:22:04I mean, there's another one that went into the trucks like he was
- 1:22:07talking. He said maybe it was a little
- 1:22:08bit too early for me to try that and make that work.
- 1:22:10And I mean, he's happy with what he's got.
- 1:22:12He's got going on the Sprint Series right now.
- 1:22:14I mean, he's just a face on. I mean, he even did a thing
- 1:22:16about dwarfism on TV couple weeks ago talking about that.
- 1:22:21One of the most personal drivers.
- 1:22:22You think, oh, my government, no one's going to be able to talk
- 1:22:24to him and he's just as personable as anybody else out
- 1:22:26there in that the Sprint car deal.
- 1:22:29So you know. I almost think we see less of
- 1:22:34NASCAR being the final destination now with like you
- 1:22:37mentioned the High Limit series earlier in the exposure they get
- 1:22:39on flow and the other TV opportunities that they get.
- 1:22:42And you have the car Stewart, who has those same opportunities
- 1:22:45now. And you mentioned ASA and I I
- 1:22:48with the Cup series being such a tough road to climb and NASCAR
- 1:22:52not even necessarily in such a stable environment all the time.
- 1:22:57I don't I think maybe these local tour, not necessarily
- 1:22:59local touring series, but these touring series might become more
- 1:23:02of a main destination for like the Rico a Brews and the Bobby
- 1:23:06Santos, you know, the the Jonathan Davenports of the world
- 1:23:09where they never go. They're never makes NASCAR.
- 1:23:11But I feel like these traveling series that they almost feel
- 1:23:13like they are their own mini NASCAR's like that ASA we had.
- 1:23:17Back in that it's busy, expensive.
- 1:23:19I mean, so many times you watch a Grand National event and I
- 1:23:23rarely do. Maybe early in the year, half
- 1:23:25the cars don't have one sponsor on them.
- 1:23:27And I'm going to how these guys, this is just a car number and
- 1:23:30they're trying to make a race and like, Oh my God, this is
- 1:23:33like putting everything in in in one bundle to try to make a
- 1:23:35race. And they're going to probably
- 1:23:37get 26th or 28th out of it and 24th no matter what they do.
- 1:23:41And it's like, man, there's this not enough sponsorship going on
- 1:23:45and it's just just, it's just like they're all there.
- 1:23:49It almost looks like a like a new race car.
- 1:23:51Like early in the season, they got a number on it and then they
- 1:23:53might race one or two other races.
- 1:23:55And then that's really about it. And like, say it, it's such a
- 1:23:58different thing with that NASCAR stuff, the licensing and then
- 1:24:02all the stuff that they there's so many restrictions and so many
- 1:24:06things he got to go through and like, say Carson made it where
- 1:24:09he's at right now. Hopefully that will open the
- 1:24:10door for other guys to kind of think about that.
- 1:24:13You know, like they got Chandler Smith, you know, some of those
- 1:24:15guys with that run the the car series, Jeff Fultz.
- 1:24:18I mean, they done some dabbling here and there.
- 1:24:20But you know, the next big thing with NASCAR they I mean there's
- 1:24:24going to be some other guys that's going to be calling in
- 1:24:25after a couple more years now. And then there's going to be
- 1:24:27they're going to need another to keep this 38 car field and they
- 1:24:30got to get some 38 guys, 36 guys to show up weekly to make it
- 1:24:34work. And sometimes it's like you see
- 1:24:37them stands. I mean, we see stands at local
- 1:24:39tracks with 200 people in them, 203 hundred, 400 people.
- 1:24:42And you look at NASCAR, some of the races and it's like, wow,
- 1:24:45there's the main Bristol used to be a waiting list forever for
- 1:24:49tickets. And now you look there and you
- 1:24:50can see about anywhere you want and everything has its time and
- 1:24:54everything. Things go up and they go down
- 1:24:57and you know, Indycars trying to do different things to make the
- 1:25:00500 bigger and they said they got, you know, place is almost
- 1:25:02like a sell out again this year. They need to make that happen at
- 1:25:05Iowa when they were doing think something there and they need to
- 1:25:07make it happen when they do other venues and other times
- 1:25:11other shows. It's like on those Rd. courses,
- 1:25:14no, they're interesting with all the camera angles, but you could
- 1:25:17even tell we're. I mean, when I watch that, I
- 1:25:19don't even know what tell turn 56713 is.
- 1:25:22It's just like you just see another turn and two cars race
- 1:25:24and then that's it. And then there's a wreck and the
- 1:25:27only time there's passing is when they're in the pit area
- 1:25:29getting a pit stop and then there's a swap of spots.
- 1:25:32There's really nothing on track because it's so narrow.
- 1:25:35And yeah, it's just, it doesn't make it fun.
- 1:25:38Like I said, when you watch a race at Winchester and it's
- 1:25:40like, my God, it's the speed. Like when you were down there
- 1:25:43for the sprints last year and they had some wrecks and you
- 1:25:46just get to see the speed up close and it's like, man, these
- 1:25:48guys are hauling the mail, you know?
- 1:25:50And then when they get wrecks, it's like, wow, they they tear
- 1:25:53some stuff up pretty good. And I mean, that makes it look
- 1:25:56like wow, some a wow factor to it and.
- 1:26:00Something I never realized about Winchester until I was down
- 1:26:02there. I mean, obviously the banking is
- 1:26:04insane. Standing in the infield, it's
- 1:26:05looking, it looks like you're looking at A2 story building and
- 1:26:08you're looking at the bank standing from the infield.
- 1:26:10But the track, how uneven it is, I mean, it dips all the way
- 1:26:14around character. I love that type of stuff in a
- 1:26:18racetrack. I mean, it's been a racetrack
- 1:26:19since, what, 1911? Modus racing oldest half mile,
- 1:26:25you know, Dayton was up there with it, but then Dayton closed
- 1:26:27up but Holdeman had it and the drivers were complaining about
- 1:26:32some spots they were bottoming out because he'd see that the
- 1:26:34the titanium sparks or the frames, you know, when they're
- 1:26:37doing the the Thunder show. So Holdeman says I'm going to
- 1:26:39repave the place. They repave the to have it
- 1:26:42smooth. And I think it was a 5 Figure 4
- 1:26:46figure paving job thing was like 2224 thousand could be wrong
- 1:26:50right in that range. And the guys went on it and they
- 1:26:52said this is way too fast. Wait, there's too much grip.
- 1:26:55This is wait, we're not going to race tonight and even canceled a
- 1:26:58Thursday night show because of the Midget drivers are like
- 1:27:01we're not this is we want to be able to, you know, get back home
- 1:27:05tonight after this race. And they felt it was so quick,
- 1:27:08so twitchy. And so they re they tore it up
- 1:27:11and they repaved it again to make it a little bit slower, I
- 1:27:15guess would be the word. But I would have hated to drive
- 1:27:18down there for that race and then see that happen.
- 1:27:20But I remember they were like, you know, then they're talking
- 1:27:22about the dangers of speed and everything.
- 1:27:24And you know, that's when they're that's where they're
- 1:27:26having some bad wrecks there and stuff.
- 1:27:28And you know, those open wheel cars.
- 1:27:30That's when Robbie Stanley passed away in that time frame
- 1:27:33with a wreck there at Winchester, Vogler at his really
- 1:27:36bad deal at Salem leading the race and the car got up into the
- 1:27:39fence and severe, severe head injuries.
- 1:27:43It took his life and he was going to do an NASCAR the next
- 1:27:45day. Pocono.
- 1:27:46He actually came back to Salem and then that happened during
- 1:27:49Waltz fire at Winchester. So I mean, it's like that's why
- 1:27:52they say a lot of open wheels don't want to go there because
- 1:27:54it's like that the the chance of a really bad wreck.
- 1:27:56And 500 they kept saying we want to get Sprint cars there and 500
- 1:28:00series, like Nah, I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:28:02Then they finally said we'll do it.
- 1:28:04They put a big purse up and then we had 26 cars for that show and
- 1:28:07they did tear some cars up. They had that three car tangle
- 1:28:10and one and two couple of guys got in the wall.
- 1:28:12One guy had an axle brake going into one.
- 1:28:14I think they had nine cars finished out of that 26 field
- 1:28:18and they're coming back this year.
- 1:28:20I mean, the silver crowns were there and they they're just as
- 1:28:22quick, if not, you know, with the smaller motor, but they're
- 1:28:25like doing 142 down the straight.
- 1:28:27But those cars a little bit bigger, wider stable, they're
- 1:28:30almost like tanks going around and it just that they hear those
- 1:28:33cars. The motors are those things
- 1:28:34coming off the corners. That small block just making
- 1:28:36that sound is like a pretty awesome sound right there.
- 1:28:39IRP is another good track to hear those cars with that motor,
- 1:28:42you know, and there's some horsepower going on there.
- 1:28:45So you talk talk about Winchester and its age and its
- 1:28:48character, and Mount Lawn is obviously a track that certainly
- 1:28:51has its own character. What do you what are some other
- 1:28:53tracks that I have, some unique challenge, maybe even tracks
- 1:28:56that aren't around anymore, that maybe had unique challenges that
- 1:28:59you don't necessarily see so much?
- 1:29:02Boy, boy, I'm going to say, you know that Gorky Park in
- 1:29:05Pennsylvania? It's it's on YouTube and it's a
- 1:29:07flat. It reminds you of a Mountville
- 1:29:10and they had the modifieds. They ran until 1986.
- 1:29:13There was like 0 banking at that track and he'd go on YouTube and
- 1:29:16they had like the modifieds in the 80s.
- 1:29:18They had the old dirt modifieds with slicks on them, the dirt
- 1:29:22bodies. They had the newer Cavalier
- 1:29:23style. Then they had the homemade
- 1:29:24stuff. Like you'd see a Butler kind of
- 1:29:26like that Mahoming Valley Speedway where it was a lot of
- 1:29:29turns and it was just a flat track that the grains.
- 1:29:33I mean, the insurance would have seen that track now they would
- 1:29:35have said there's no way you guys are going to race here
- 1:29:36because the of the fencing was only I think just like 12 feet
- 1:29:40high tire could have went over to fence and probably wiped out
- 1:29:43a few people there. But that was a unique looking
- 1:29:46track. Boy, going over the years, you
- 1:29:50know, Kalkona, Wisconsin Nationals, a 5/8 big, big track
- 1:29:54that was that was a lot of speed at that track up there.
- 1:29:57And they do some shows on the 5/8 and they got a smaller inner
- 1:29:59track. Ileana was a unique track in a
- 1:30:01sense that it was flat and it was 1/2 mile flat.
- 1:30:05Then they had that drag strip quarter mile on the inside that
- 1:30:08the Pure Sox would run in the Fort Mill drives.
- 1:30:11But that was the very little passing.
- 1:30:14They had the sprints there and they had the radar gun and they
- 1:30:17were going 145 down the straightaway there.
- 1:30:19They were just whipping. And that night it was the
- 1:30:21humidity was just right where you could see the vapor trails
- 1:30:23when they would go by. Plus the stands were pretty
- 1:30:26close to the the the fence and you could feel that when they
- 1:30:29would go by, you'd feel that wind gush, you know, like the
- 1:30:32kicking of the wind and everything go by.
- 1:30:34And you know, they had about 6-7 shows there and stuff and but so
- 1:30:38flat. I mean, we had the vintage cars
- 1:30:40there guys are like that's, that's a fast track, but man is
- 1:30:43that flat. You know you did, you don't want
- 1:30:44to go. You know, all they were doing
- 1:30:46his pass was just RIP the guy in the inside enough he knocked him
- 1:30:49loose and he goes up high and then you whip underneath him.
- 1:30:51I don't think I saw 5 outside passes there all night.
- 1:30:54But yeah, another unique looking track there, kind of going
- 1:30:58through the going through my cabinet.
- 1:31:00Galesburg's another really flat track.
- 1:31:02A lot of character. And then they have those fence
- 1:31:03pulsed out in the back and that Creek and everything.
- 1:31:07I going down St. Mclawn.
- 1:31:08That's pretty unique there. Yeah.
- 1:31:13Westchester was a nice half. Columbus was another one that
- 1:31:17was like almost like a big circle too.
- 1:31:18It was like 1/3 mile, very similar to that Mahoming.
- 1:31:22Like a like a big Mahoming Valley.
- 1:31:24Yeah. Another cool track back in the
- 1:31:27day. It's only really see it on TNN.
- 1:31:29I wasn't there in person ever. Was a Syracuse Mile and they
- 1:31:32would have the award of outlaw sprints there and they were
- 1:31:34going like I think 146 down the straightaway and they were doing
- 1:31:38some airfoil things with their wings and stuff like that to try
- 1:31:40to flatten the wings out and some ultra speed dirt.
- 1:31:43Late models at Duquoin, Charlie Schwartz, it was 86, he did a
- 1:31:48202485 lap, I think it was on a mile track and that was 146
- 1:31:55miles an hour, 144 average. And that was with the big
- 1:31:58spoilers that track there, those were horsepowered cars with the
- 1:32:02big spoilers. And that track was it was very
- 1:32:06it wasn't really tacky by any stretch.
- 1:32:08So it was a slightly come down the straightaway and you hear
- 1:32:10that the motors just like then they were blowing a lot of
- 1:32:12motors that day because it was pretty hot.
- 1:32:14But you talk about that, but I was like, wow, these guys are
- 1:32:16really hauling and Charlie Schwartz is like, this is the
- 1:32:19fastest I've ever gone in a in a late model.
- 1:32:21So that was a pretty cool time in there.
- 1:32:23Then you go look at Eldora, you know, 12 seconds, 1260, they're
- 1:32:26going with a half mile all the way around a track floor in it.
- 1:32:29And when you go there and you watch a race, it's like, wow,
- 1:32:31these guys are they're really, really moving pretty good there.
- 1:32:35That's always a cool experience there.
- 1:32:38So one more thing I wanted to ask you about was rivalries.
- 1:32:40What are your what are your favorite some of your favorite
- 1:32:43local rivalries looking back through the.
- 1:32:46Head boy, I would have to say, you know, going back, it'll be
- 1:32:48Larry Zent Nyery in like 85 when New Paris reopened and they
- 1:32:54would that was going on till about 90 because then Danny kind
- 1:32:56of got out a little bit and then that's when Zent and then that's
- 1:32:59kind of the Super late that Gold Cup series kind of evaporate.
- 1:33:02I think Danny was done after 88 doing the Super lates.
- 1:33:05I'm a couldn't right in that time frame, but that was a
- 1:33:07rivalry. Then people, you know, Zent was
- 1:33:09always one. Either they're either you love
- 1:33:11them or you hate them. Danny, everybody loved them.
- 1:33:13They didn't really thought Danny was a dirty driver or anything.
- 1:33:15He was a white Zen. He's always got all the money
- 1:33:17and he's always this and that and that was always a good time
- 1:33:20for racing there at that time. Boy Asai, remember buddy of
- 1:33:27mine, Rusty were going to go up there for a race and we got the,
- 1:33:31we got there kind of late because we had a car problem out
- 1:33:33front of the house. Starter decided to go out.
- 1:33:35We got up there a little bit late, but Fred Campbell's mom
- 1:33:38sits on the top row and she always reserves about 10 or 12
- 1:33:40seats for somebody that shows up.
- 1:33:42Luckily we got there and she had two seats available.
- 1:33:45So we sat there and Mike Getty, I mean, he's just out of
- 1:33:48calling, you know, two hours, hour and a half away.
- 1:33:51Senator racing for the win. And Senator got spun out by
- 1:33:55Eddie and that was about four laps to go and Eddie wins the
- 1:33:57race. And boy, he got out of the car
- 1:34:01and they were booing them. I mean, I don't think they had
- 1:34:03about 10 people cheering for him.
- 1:34:04Everybody else is booing them. And then he's got to shake his
- 1:34:06first and wave the flag in the air, which even stirred people
- 1:34:08up even more than Senator. Truce kind of getting a little
- 1:34:11bit excited about it. And then the announcer and he
- 1:34:14was talking and he said that's just racing.
- 1:34:16He was in the way anyways, and they actually had to escort
- 1:34:20Eddie out of there with police so he can get out of the track
- 1:34:22because they're all parked in the infield and Eddie's like
- 1:34:25that crowd there. He's that was that's not the
- 1:34:27place to spin out Seneca. But he says, but we were racing
- 1:34:29hard and that had to happen, you know.
- 1:34:31And so that was always a good rivalry there with them guys.
- 1:34:34I mean even the Butch Miller, you know, he was always good
- 1:34:38with rivalries, friendly rivalries and stuff.
- 1:34:40Kalamazoo back in the day and spent spare intact was always
- 1:34:44good with Denny for for years spirals and that was Kalamazoo,
- 1:34:47the local guy and Denny they would go back and forth a lot of
- 1:34:50feature wins over the time frame.
- 1:34:55Boy, and I'm trying to think back in any other time frame,
- 1:34:58even like kind of like supers. It was always Sonyer at Sandusky
- 1:35:03was always very successful and Bentley even on the track for a
- 1:35:06couple years and the New York guys and they always that
- 1:35:09rivalry, the Ohio guys versus the New York guys would roll in
- 1:35:12with the ISMA series and that. And you know, that was always
- 1:35:16sometimes the Sandusky guys kind of thought, Hey, this is our
- 1:35:18track, you know, Shulick and them and Sonya and then those go
- 1:35:22sick and, you know, Abold and Bentley would come in and win
- 1:35:25the race. And, you know, they always had
- 1:35:27the fans saying you should have taken that guy out.
- 1:35:29You know, I was like, well, we really don't do that kind of
- 1:35:31stuff with supers. You really you just race hard
- 1:35:33and you know, and the best guy wins.
- 1:35:38That's really about it. Now don't we have Drew Evans and
- 1:35:41M and at down at Mclawn now where there's been some contact
- 1:35:45with them guys a couple times in the last couple laps and, and
- 1:35:48minute won a race and some people were yelling at him and
- 1:35:52the car owner Brian yelled back at the fans.
- 1:35:54And that was I think I started and stopped that interview like
- 1:35:574 different times. And then I had to just keep
- 1:35:59covering the mic up. But because Travis was down
- 1:36:01there that night and I said we can't I, I told you, I said we
- 1:36:04can't get started until this these people settle down here.
- 1:36:06We're going to have all kinds of profanity on our track
- 1:36:09microphone. So we had to be careful with
- 1:36:11that one there. And but it was all in fun.
- 1:36:15I mean, if they're parked right across from each other, just
- 1:36:17heated rivalries, this, you know, all they're they're
- 1:36:19racing, you know, putting on people getting stands, get
- 1:36:21excited about that. That's really about the most of
- 1:36:24the time. I really seen something going
- 1:36:26on. I mean, Stovall in Fort Wayne
- 1:36:28that we thought he was the Golden Boy because he came into
- 1:36:30the Moose Myers ride and, you know, always had everything
- 1:36:33preset. So anything Stovall Scott did is
- 1:36:35that everybody was going to Boo him because they thought he's
- 1:36:37just not he's not Moose. And then they were like he
- 1:36:40forced moose out of that car and now moose was going to get out
- 1:36:42of racing anyways. And so if stole ball one, it
- 1:36:45didn't seem to matter. Even Zent sometimes he went to
- 1:36:47Fort Wayne didn't seem to matter.
- 1:36:48There's still a boom anyways. And but I mean, Larry put a lot
- 1:36:53of money, you know, put out a lot of money, national serve all
- 1:36:56and he sponsored a lot of shows and stuff.
- 1:36:58But no matter what how you do that, it's kind of like with
- 1:37:01Trump matter what you do sometimes it just ain't going to
- 1:37:03people just ain't going to agree.
- 1:37:04You're just going to want to bicker about it and stuff there.
- 1:37:07One thing I wanted to ask, and I know we're getting tight on time
- 1:37:10here, it's 833. So just to kind of do like a
- 1:37:12time check, but you have the Michigan vintage shirt on for
- 1:37:19facing. So do you want to talk a little
- 1:37:20bit about, you know, you, you talk about all these names, you
- 1:37:23talk about Stutzman, I mean, and all these different types and
- 1:37:26you do a lot with the vintage racer.
- 1:37:28So do you want to talk a little bit about how you got into
- 1:37:30vintage race, like the vintage racers and, and what you do with
- 1:37:34that group, what that group's about where they travel, why
- 1:37:37they travel there or what the goal is?
- 1:37:39I know obviously Yorks are a big part of that, but you're kind of
- 1:37:43like voice and and I think president or something of some
- 1:37:47role within their group, right. So if you want to talk a little
- 1:37:50bit about Michigan and vintage racers.
- 1:37:52Yeah, we started that I believe in 2000 and we had Pat wanted to
- 1:37:56get some guys together. They had a show at M40 with the
- 1:37:59Super mods and I brought my books and got talking to Pat
- 1:38:02then and he's like, I'm looking at starting a vintage group,
- 1:38:04would you be interested? And I go, well, I don't have a
- 1:38:05car, but I got the books, you know, that'd be a start there.
- 1:38:09And I said I could maybe even write stories if it came to it.
- 1:38:12And so we had their first shows. We had like 5 shows the first
- 1:38:15year and we had about 8/10/12 cars.
- 1:38:18Guys would come from Illinois, Wisconsin, a couple from down
- 1:38:21from Wisconsin, a little bit on the southern end of it, couple
- 1:38:23guys from Ohio, most of Michigan, Indiana.
- 1:38:26We start broadening out. I think we've been to 30, some
- 1:38:2930, about 3233 tracks over the years.
- 1:38:32And this year we have Shoals, let's see, it's going to be
- 1:38:37Plymouth, New Paris, Kale no Kalamazoo.
- 1:38:40This year, we're going to have Corrigan oil up in Lansing and
- 1:38:44we're meet now, we're on the schedule for Winchester.
- 1:38:46Hopefully you get some guys that come down there for that and
- 1:38:50then that is really going to be our shows this year.
- 1:38:54We got nothing planned for Angola this year.
- 1:38:56We have been there usually Labor Day weekend and we've had as
- 1:38:59many as 10/11 shows a year and as few.
- 1:39:02I think one year we had four with all the rain outs and it's
- 1:39:04just a bunch of guys that used to race or have interest in
- 1:39:08racing. They found a vintage car or they
- 1:39:10replicated a car and just want to take exhibition laps.
- 1:39:15We don't really run for. We don't get any money.
- 1:39:18We just get 2 free pit passes. Cindy and Mary Peters, they do.
- 1:39:23They do like a cookout for us and everything there and you can
- 1:39:25bring food and have like a good nice turn out there.
- 1:39:28We got Mike Bontreger who used to race in that group, Kevin
- 1:39:31Snyder, Fred Reed's son-in-law. There's a couple Fred Reed cars
- 1:39:34are in that, then the New York's with the either like the Sprint
- 1:39:38cars predominantly now Pat did have a vintage Supermod at one
- 1:39:42time, a rear engine car and we'll get some other guys that
- 1:39:44will dabble down. I think we lost six members in
- 1:39:46the last three years with the head cars.
- 1:39:48So, you know, we've kind of taken a hit on that, but is this
- 1:39:52a group that we just travel around to different shows?
- 1:39:55There's the VART group in Ohio, which is just like our group.
- 1:39:59Ron Gunnerman is pretty much running that group over there
- 1:40:01and they do a lot of shows now down at Shady Bowl.
- 1:40:04They do a Thunder series, which they kind of semi race a little
- 1:40:06bit and they do just a couple other dirt shows now.
- 1:40:09They're kind of limited on what shows they're doing.
- 1:40:12And like we'll go. But anyway, we're going to Grand
- 1:40:14Rapids actually this year for the Super mod weekend.
- 1:40:16So I've been pushing for that for a while and I'm glad we're
- 1:40:18going up there because the material I got kind of doesn't
- 1:40:21do a whole lot of justice taking it to 40 with super mod Oswego
- 1:40:24books. You go up there and people be
- 1:40:26like, oh, smokes what you got there.
- 1:40:28And so that's going to be cool to be with the Super mods and
- 1:40:30just to get this decide on what's going on there.
- 1:40:33And let's say so we've been about so spent 2526 years.
- 1:40:37I think Pat myself, who Bob Roche, he, he doesn't have a
- 1:40:44car, but he's still alive. And Randy Peters, I think that's
- 1:40:48it for the people that started that group to still like there's
- 1:40:51three of us still alive from that original deal there.
- 1:40:54And we have said we lost a lot of members.
- 1:40:55A lot of them guys were like in our 60s and 70s and this things
- 1:40:58happen and you know, health reasons and stuff.
- 1:41:01But I bring the books. I announce I only announce like
- 1:41:04two or three shows now a year because with Mclawn, it's like
- 1:41:07we it's like I try to do the I get to do the new Parish show
- 1:41:10for sure. Butlers of Arcs show and I've
- 1:41:13made that show the last two years now.
- 1:41:15I've missed that for a couple years with Mclawn racing every
- 1:41:17other week. It's like we yeah, just try to
- 1:41:20make sure I can be at one of the shows.
- 1:41:22If we do Corrigan, that's going to be a dandy one there because
- 1:41:25that's 180 miles up the Lansing. And then I got Mclawn the next
- 1:41:29day and I told Pattice it got to 600 plus week and I just there's
- 1:41:32no way I'm going to be able to swing that.
- 1:41:33So I wouldn't say I hope for a rain out, but if we do have a
- 1:41:36rain out, hopefully it's when we can do a show and do that kind
- 1:41:39of stuff there. But we bring a lot of the books
- 1:41:41on display and guys talk off the racing.
- 1:41:44We do like a cookout meal thing for like pretty much the club
- 1:41:49members. And then we get together at Jim
- 1:41:51Swain's place right across from Union City.
- 1:41:53He lives in Union City, MI. He lived right across from that
- 1:41:55where that tornado was at in that up there a couple months
- 1:41:57ago and they were actually able to see it across the lake.
- 1:42:01And then we get together at Mike Bontreger's place.
- 1:42:03He's got like a barn. It's got all like a history of
- 1:42:05stuff in there and get together and there's about thing about 25
- 1:42:10of us basically in that club and it's just fun to like racing
- 1:42:14enthusiasts and talk stories up and you know, ways get ways get
- 1:42:19other people. I want to get a car sometime and
- 1:42:21do this and that and it's like, OK, you know, sometimes it
- 1:42:23works, sometimes it don't work. But Tony Lobretto joined our
- 1:42:26club. He's got a car and Glen Eamon's
- 1:42:28got a car that he had an 85 at New Paris, like a late model.
- 1:42:31He's that 48 car wool sharp looking ride.
- 1:42:34So I mean, we think the show up new Paris last year, I think we
- 1:42:36had a 12 cars there. I think it was.
- 1:42:39And you know, we don't need 16 on the track to run.
- 1:42:42That can get kind of kind of dice when Angola, we'd have like
- 1:42:442428 cars show up with bark and then we divide them in two
- 1:42:47groups. That's still a busy track out
- 1:42:49there with those groups. We tried to do the hot rods in
- 1:42:51one group and then the slower guys and the other group and
- 1:42:54stuff there and we get to talk it up and kids get to sit in the
- 1:42:57car and it's it's just history. And, you know, a lot of people
- 1:43:01just think that's pretty cool. And it's it's pretty fun.
- 1:43:04It's kind of the bittersweet. We know that some people are up
- 1:43:06in age and well, he's got some health concerns.
- 1:43:09Oh, oh, got to be careful here, you know, and then things happen
- 1:43:11and, you know, they pass on and that.
- 1:43:14But the great memories with these guys.
- 1:43:16And, and, you know, I'm glad Pat started the group when he did
- 1:43:19back in, you know, 8990. And because you know, there's a
- 1:43:23Midwest group and there was an Ohio group, but never really
- 1:43:25there was like a Michigan group. They were kind of disbanded.
- 1:43:27So he kind of started it up in this way and I say I think we've
- 1:43:31been to 33. I have to look that up.
- 1:43:32I think we've been to 33 tracks over the years.
- 1:43:34Some dirt tracks, been to Hartford and Thunderbird open
- 1:43:38show like. So we got Grand Rapids before
- 1:43:40Kalamazoo, Bob Gillsburg. Let's see, there was Lansing,
- 1:43:47Angola, Fort Wayne, Winchester, Indianapolis, Plymouth, Toledo,
- 1:43:56Sandusky, Lorraine. I'll have to get an Adam Ileana
- 1:44:01solid. It's pretty fun deal.
- 1:44:03But I stay with me and doing Mclawn and doing the photos.
- 1:44:05I only get to do about two shows a year down as I can make this
- 1:44:08one fat, but the mother ones just didn't want to be able to
- 1:44:11make it, you know, unless we get a rain out or something there.
- 1:44:14If there's only one of you, right, you know there's one.
- 1:44:17Of you and you're. That's only the good part.
- 1:44:19Bad part there. So I know it's 8:40.
- 1:44:23So what time do you have to? What time do you have to get
- 1:44:26going? Usually about 45, so I got about
- 1:44:295 more minutes there. So we'll what we'll do is, you
- 1:44:33know, I'll probably get like a Part 3 just because again, I
- 1:44:37feel like we still only scratched the surface with you
- 1:44:39and we've had you since like seven O 8.
- 1:44:43So maybe we'd have like a Ron's corner every like once a month
- 1:44:47or something like that. Just a Ron Brash episode to tell
- 1:44:51more stories because you have so much to share.
- 1:44:54Yeah, the photo books and just what we have in those books,
- 1:44:57there's lots of good stuff. And you know, I try to just
- 1:45:00peace out the best stories there is.
- 1:45:02And you know, sometimes you take a book there and it's like not
- 1:45:06open all that at once. It's like, oh God, that's a lot
- 1:45:08of weight drag, but it's still someone's going to see it.
- 1:45:10And then other shows people are like, Oh my God, look at this
- 1:45:12stuff. And this is good because it's
- 1:45:15got to you got to keep track of the stuff somehow.
- 1:45:17I. Was going to say you shared with
- 1:45:20me when I posted online shortly after the top and auto show
- 1:45:23about the Johnny Russell, Bill Russell car.
- 1:45:26So while we while we're closing up, maybe that's the story that
- 1:45:29we can end with is if you want to tell a little bit about that
- 1:45:32story in that car at the that's Concorde Autorama, right?
- 1:45:38They have Racer Rama and actually Johnny got with me and
- 1:45:41he says I got this car that the old Chevelle that we had and but
- 1:45:45dad doesn't know anything about it.
- 1:45:47So we're going to bring it to the car show.
- 1:45:48And I said, OK, I said I won't put it on the entry list either.
- 1:45:52So he brings it in Friday night on the flatbed and people like,
- 1:45:55what's that? It was all covered up.
- 1:45:57Chuck Maggio did the same thing I think that same year with that
- 1:45:5955 Chevy. He kept it all covered up.
- 1:46:01This is a surprise because he was going to debut it at the car
- 1:46:04show, that street sock he had. And so we brought it in.
- 1:46:08We kept it covered up well. Then Friday it was kind of dead
- 1:46:10in the morning, so I took the cover off.
- 1:46:12I started taking pictures of it and then him and Bill and Ed was
- 1:46:15going to come out Friday night. And so then we're kind of
- 1:46:18waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting.
- 1:46:20And they car was covered up. And what's going on with this
- 1:46:22car just just covered up, no big deal.
- 1:46:25And so then them guys come walking in and car was still
- 1:46:28covered up and everybody's like kind of following them.
- 1:46:30And I tried to have the camera like for like the moment they're
- 1:46:33going to be surprised to see it. And Johnny uncovered it and Bill
- 1:46:36was like, Oh my God, check this out.
- 1:46:38So that was kind of a pretty cool deal.
- 1:46:39And then probably had probably thought there's a ride over
- 1:46:42there, but about, you know, about 100 people's kind of
- 1:46:44standing around looking at whole thing going on there and stuff.
- 1:46:46And Bill was, I was like, and Johnny's like, we did all this
- 1:46:49and Bill didn't know anything about it.
- 1:46:50And I said that had to be quite the deal there.
- 1:46:52And you know, Bill's like, Oh my God, check this out.
- 1:46:55You know that, you know, you're going back 1980 with that car
- 1:46:581979. So it that was that was really
- 1:47:02cool. Well, I'm just leaving the
- 1:47:05picture because I think that if I remember, that's the car that
- 1:47:07they had at the auto show this year.
- 1:47:10So because I even went back last year's show and I went, Nope,
- 1:47:14that was a Batmobile sort of deal.
- 1:47:16So I was trying to think like, I know I've seen pictures and I
- 1:47:18can't remember if it was maybe the year before because, you
- 1:47:21know, them and Kalamazoo have been going the same amount of
- 1:47:24years. We both arrived at the auto
- 1:47:26show. And so I'm like, maybe it was
- 1:47:28in, you know, the year before that that they had that kind of
- 1:47:31car out there because I remember seeing pictures of it and might
- 1:47:33have even been used sharing pictures, but.
- 1:47:36Yeah, because they had it then they had trouble getting it
- 1:47:38started and stuff, and they're going to race it as a Street
- 1:47:41Stock or something and then, you know, just like we'll get it to
- 1:47:44it later and other projects, you know, took off after that.
- 1:47:49Now the tracks probably taking some time away from the cartoon
- 1:47:51a little bit. I'm sure.
- 1:47:54Well, again, I know we're right up against the the button here,
- 1:47:57but I know like Sheldon Lindlag, again, just that race.
- 1:48:01If you've not watched that 4 cylinder race from new pairs
- 1:48:04with Sheldon, again, huge congratulations.
- 1:48:08I never, I didn't make it back down to Sheldon after I got
- 1:48:10everything packed away, but then I saw he's pulling out behind me
- 1:48:13when I was leaving and I wanted to get over there to
- 1:48:15congratulate him because again, that that was pretty impressive.
- 1:48:19But he got on here, you know, saying, Oh, I'll show it.
- 1:48:22You know, definitely appreciate the story that you're, you know,
- 1:48:25telling And remember over the years, and I know a lot of
- 1:48:27people have jumped on and been busy in the comments sharing
- 1:48:30those throwbacks. And so again, we'll probably
- 1:48:33like I, I mentioned, we'll have like a part three, you know,
- 1:48:36maybe it's just like once a once a month, we get you on here when
- 1:48:39your schedule allows. And because I know you're busy,
- 1:48:41like you said, and you know, get you on and maybe just tell more
- 1:48:45stories and we'll have more racing by that time and maybe
- 1:48:47people will, you know, someone will remember another story that
- 1:48:51will trigger something. Because again, you know, you, we
- 1:48:54have the Super modifieds that we could talk about from the New
- 1:48:57England area. We have, you know, all these
- 1:48:59different things going on. So again, there's we haven't
- 1:49:03even really opened the book yet. So, so again, Ron, you know, I
- 1:49:08know they say it, but, and I know I've said it before, but I
- 1:49:11just definitely appreciate everything that you've done for
- 1:49:14this area and, and everything that you've done to keep the
- 1:49:17sport alive. And you know, I, I can't even be
- 1:49:21half of you, but you know, I'm going to try my part to fill in,
- 1:49:24know where I can, because I know you're one person and you can't
- 1:49:27be everywhere. Just like Boujou is one person.
- 1:49:29He won't be able to be everywhere.
- 1:49:30I'm one person. I can't be everywhere.
- 1:49:32But you know, together, us three, you know, we're trying to
- 1:49:34do our part just to keep this thing that we love alive.
- 1:49:39Sure, sure, there work and and storms are coming.
- 1:49:42So definitely be safe tonight while you're out there and
- 1:49:45everything and, and we'll hit, we'll have you on back here
- 1:49:47probably in a couple weeks again.
- 1:49:49All right, thank you so much guys.
- 1:49:51I'm going to get my clothes on. I got my jacket on.
- 1:49:54Got already got my. Shirt, I was blessed.
- 1:49:56I hope you got clothes on, Ron. Oh.
- 1:49:58Yeah, I'm fully dressed there. So you guys take Care now.
- 1:50:02Yep, have a. Good one, Ron.
- 1:50:03Thank you. Thank you again.
- 1:50:05But again, everyone, thank you for for joining us tonight.
- 1:50:09We're not quite ending yet. We'll wrap up with a few
- 1:50:12thoughts from the weekend, talk a little bit about Springport
- 1:50:16and my excitement. That's kind of the talk of the
- 1:50:18town a little bit for, you know, for social media.
- 1:50:21But again, we'll have to have Ron back on again just because,
- 1:50:25you know, we're we're still only scratching the surface with him
- 1:50:28and we, you know, we could have kept going if he didn't have
- 1:50:31work coming up. So why don't we debrief a little
- 1:50:35bit? So what stood out to you from
- 1:50:39our conversation with Ron this time?
- 1:50:41I mean, I I could just listen to Ron's stories all night, but he
- 1:50:44was ranting when he had his prepared notes at the beginning
- 1:50:47and he was just going through some of his favorite times, like
- 1:50:49favorite traveling series and stuff like that.
- 1:50:51That I could just sit there and listen to that stuff all day and
- 1:50:53just naming names off. Yeah, awesome stuff.
- 1:50:56I love Ron having Ron on. One, and it's one of those that
- 1:50:59again, you know, you and I have talked, Ron and I have talked
- 1:51:02directly about like, you know, he is such an encyclopedia for
- 1:51:06this area. And, you know, it's one of those
- 1:51:10like, you know who who takes over from there, right?
- 1:51:13You know, because there's going to be a point where you know
- 1:51:16he's going to decide to say, hey, you know what, I just don't
- 1:51:19want to do it anymore or can't do it anymore or it's impossible
- 1:51:22to do it anymore, right? I mean, you just don't know how
- 1:51:24life goes and but it's one of those that I know you'd like.
- 1:51:27You're doing your part with your Buju chronicles and and telling
- 1:51:31those stories of tracks past and present.
- 1:51:33And so and I know you were working on other episodes and
- 1:51:37you know, you're busy. You're one person too, right?
- 1:51:39So, so again, that's where I know next week we have Tim
- 1:51:47Dibble will be on and I'm excited for him because I, you
- 1:51:50know, he used to race. They raced over at Hartford, you
- 1:51:53know, before they decided to own it and everything.
- 1:51:55So there's actually in the concession stand at Hartford,
- 1:51:58you can go in and there's a picture of Tim racing.
- 1:52:00I want to see in a Pro stock or something like that.
- 1:52:03So you know, right there on their main, their pit concession
- 1:52:07down below. And so there's a couple photos
- 1:52:09in there, but you know, he raced on it when it was 1/2 mile.
- 1:52:12And then obviously we could talk about his perspective with the
- 1:52:143/8. But, you know, having against
- 1:52:16someone like Tim on, you know, I think he's going to have a lot
- 1:52:19of stories to tell and, you know, and obviously preview the
- 1:52:21upcoming Hartford season. But you know, he is a racer and,
- 1:52:25and, you know, we can probably ask him some, you know, Ron
- 1:52:28mentioned this or Ron mentioned that and, you know, and we'll
- 1:52:31probably be able to recall something.
- 1:52:32So, so again, I, you know, that's where I, I just, I look
- 1:52:36forward to Mondays, you know, and I've actually mean, it's
- 1:52:39really pushed me to get some of the editing done on Sundays,
- 1:52:41even though that, you know, my day off because I just want to
- 1:52:45rejuvenate right from the weekend.
- 1:52:46But it's like, OK, we gotta get ready for the show on Monday
- 1:52:49because I just look forward to your guests every week.
- 1:52:51So, you know, I do want to do like a quick, you know, little
- 1:52:55blurb because we didn't do one at the top of the hour.
- 1:52:57But again, for the Monday night rewind, you know, if you guys
- 1:53:01help us, you know, like it, share it out.
- 1:53:04Like I see we have 30 likes so far just on top row stream, I
- 1:53:07think, but you know, share it out, you know, let people know
- 1:53:11to to take a listen and join us on Mondays to come.
- 1:53:14You know, obviously then on Thursdays we have a Thursday
- 1:53:16night at throttle. But if someone can't watch it
- 1:53:18live on Facebook, it is on YouTube.
- 1:53:21The video version, it's the same thing.
- 1:53:22And then even on Spotify, it's a video version.
- 1:53:25So when we're done with the show, I always download it, put
- 1:53:27on Spotify. Then from Spotify, it disperses
- 1:53:30out to audio formats on Apple Podcasts, which it seems that's
- 1:53:35where a lot of other other people like to listen is on
- 1:53:38Apple Podcast. And then there's Amazon Music on
- 1:53:41iHeartRadio. So again, it's all free to watch
- 1:53:43and all free to listen. If you get in the car and you
- 1:53:46have a long road trip and you want to listen to a show, you
- 1:53:49know, we definitely invite you to.
- 1:53:50And just a quick reminder too, for this Thursday, The Throttle
- 1:53:55returns at 7:00 PM where we'll preview the upcoming weekend.
- 1:53:58We'll it'll be a very similar format to what we did last week,
- 1:54:02where here's the Friday schedule.
- 1:54:03Lord knows there's rain in the in the forecast again.
- 1:54:06So we have to do the caveat just like before, like, hey, this is
- 1:54:09what we know, but you know, Kalamazoo literally cancelled
- 1:54:11while we were on the show. So that made that graphic like
- 1:54:15irrelevant quick but show. And they were the only one that
- 1:54:19survived on Friday. But again, the Thursday night
- 1:54:21throttle, that's a quicker show. That's, you know, we tell you
- 1:54:25what's going on, we preview, we talk, shoot the breeze, you
- 1:54:28know, get really engaged with comments more so than even
- 1:54:30tonight. And so again, that's, you know,
- 1:54:34a shorter show, a little different where this one goes a
- 1:54:37little bit longer into the night.
- 1:54:38So again, I definitely appreciate everyone who joins us
- 1:54:41on a Monday. We have a lot of people who are
- 1:54:43very consistent. So so that's something I
- 1:54:47definitely appreciate. But real quick, I know you
- 1:54:50commented on the Spring Port thing and, and I've known since
- 1:54:54the auto show and apparently other people know too.
- 1:54:56If you didn't get to know that there is a, you know, there's
- 1:54:59some bragging with that and it's like, OK, whatever.
- 1:55:02But you know, I was at Springport for two years.
- 1:55:05So, you know, I was very invested and actually invested a
- 1:55:09lot of money for my budget, a lot of money in Springport doing
- 1:55:13a lot of different things for the drivers there.
- 1:55:15Because I just, even at New Paris, they're talking about it
- 1:55:19a little bit. And not even one person who I
- 1:55:21interacted with that New Paris who brought it up had anything
- 1:55:25negative to say about Donnie. You know, Donnie just had such
- 1:55:28an infectious leadership style to him where he takes on way too
- 1:55:33much on his own and I and he knows that, but he gets things
- 1:55:39done and he has loyal people. A lot of them are family, but he
- 1:55:43has a lot of loyalty with him. You know, there are drivers who
- 1:55:46miss Springport. So so Speaking of, we were
- 1:55:51talking about Chris earlier. So let's you know, she's loving.
- 1:55:55We were talking. So maybe that's, you know, maybe
- 1:55:58that's why she joined that because we're definitely talking
- 1:55:59about you in all the good ways. You know, we just you know, how
- 1:56:02big of a host fart thing you are and people are doing Wellness
- 1:56:06checks on you. Just make sure you had a pulse,
- 1:56:09you know, after all that. But I know I'm excited for
- 1:56:13Springport and I know a lot of people have been asking, you
- 1:56:16know, drivers and fans, you know, you come back to
- 1:56:18Springport and I'm like, that's up to Donnie, you know.
- 1:56:20But you know, I'm also at New Paris and so that I mean,
- 1:56:23they're not racing this year. I can tell you that if the
- 1:56:26earliest I think would be Michigan Cup, if they race at
- 1:56:28all this year. And I think I think they might
- 1:56:31be similar, but where they have to get something in before then
- 1:56:33in the year. But they could be wrong on an
- 1:56:34ordinance, I don't know. Yep.
- 1:56:37And but I know that's something that they've kind of been
- 1:56:40working towards and on and, and I'm excited to see what they can
- 1:56:44do at Springport. A lot of you know, I don't know.
- 1:56:47Have you been to Springport before?
- 1:56:49I have not. That's why I'm so fired up.
- 1:56:50I I thought I lost my opportunity to visit Springport.
- 1:56:53You know. Donnie back involved.
- 1:56:55I'm excited to have the option our but our guy from our shop,
- 1:56:58Hollywood Trust, who races with us, he went up to the Michigan
- 1:57:01Cup a few years ago and he had a blast.
- 1:57:04So we've got a big red circle around that and I'm glad we have
- 1:57:07our opportunity back to get back up there.
- 1:57:09Well, and you're such a nerd for history too, racing.
- 1:57:11And that's that's a compliment. No, I hear correct.
- 1:57:16History too, like I love history stuff.
- 1:57:17And so if you go to YouTube, I'll try to find the links.
- 1:57:21There's a series that starts from ground breaking because
- 1:57:24that track, you know that he called it Michigan Ideal
- 1:57:27Speedway and he had worked at MIS.
- 1:57:29And so it's very similar to MIS, but the Galesburg owner at the
- 1:57:32time challenged him and said if you think you could do it
- 1:57:34better, go build your own track. So literally plowed down.
- 1:57:37It's like Field of Dreams but in a racetrack.
- 1:57:39Like it's actually watch the movie Field of Dreams.
- 1:57:42And it's like he literally plowed down a cornfield and and
- 1:57:45built this track and and called it MIS for Michigan ideal, you
- 1:57:50know, Speedway and they have a museum there, but there's a
- 1:57:53series on YouTube. A former announcer narrates it
- 1:57:55all the way through construction.
- 1:57:57I mean, that track was almost washed out by like a monsoon
- 1:57:59rainstorm. That was like a 100 year storm
- 1:58:02or thousand year storm. And, and it, and it narrates
- 1:58:06it's three parts, but it goes from breaking the ground to the
- 1:58:10few couple races. They talk with Russ Densmore all
- 1:58:12throughout. They show how the Amish built
- 1:58:14the walls and, and all these different things.
- 1:58:17And so, you know, if you're a sucker for that, that's where I
- 1:58:20don't know if that's why I fell in love with Springport is
- 1:58:22because I'm a sucker for the history.
- 1:58:24And like someone literally gambled their life, you know,
- 1:58:27savings and all that on this. But after the race is I would
- 1:58:30always try to sit in turn 4 even for just 30 seconds, you know,
- 1:58:34just sit there. It was all dark, you know, just
- 1:58:37kind of take it all in because it's like, you know, there's
- 1:58:39just, there's something special about that place.
- 1:58:42And the people not only, I mean like 7 people ran that whole
- 1:58:45thing between Donnie and his family, like 7 workers manage
- 1:58:49that whole thing and subtracts have 40 people managing a race
- 1:58:53day and they did it with seven at Springport, you know, plus
- 1:58:57like concession workers and like that whole site, but that house,
- 1:59:00like 7 people just managed that whole thing and all family.
- 1:59:04And but that's something that you even stand in the infield
- 1:59:08and you watch that backstretch with the banking and it's, I
- 1:59:11don't know, it's just something special.
- 1:59:12And most drivers are up there really special.
- 1:59:14They make it a very family environment.
- 1:59:16So I know I'm personally excited for Springport.
- 1:59:19I don't know how much I'll be at Springport.
- 1:59:20Again, that's even up to Donnie, if he would even want me at
- 1:59:23Springport. So certainly if people want me
- 1:59:25at, you know, if drivers or, or fans want me at Springport, be
- 1:59:28like, Donnie, you got to bring Lewis back.
- 1:59:29But you know, like I said, I, I even talked with him that, you
- 1:59:32know, I'm committed with new Paris and I absolutely love
- 1:59:35being down at new Paris and supporting those drivers and
- 1:59:37Chris and Tracy. So it'll be what's their
- 1:59:40schedule going to look like and, and all that to get up there.
- 1:59:44Because again, they gave me an opportunity at, at Springport
- 1:59:46and I just, you know, I, I did everything I could to not only
- 1:59:51get drivers there and, and, and promote that, but you know, even
- 1:59:55get fans in the stands there because that's what they, it's
- 1:59:59such a small area up there. And then you got to go like 100
- 2:00:02billion miles off the highway just to get there.
- 2:00:04It's not 100 billion, by the way, but it is a lot.
- 2:00:08It is a little while off 94, but you know, Charlie, listen to
- 2:00:11Charlie Hannah talk about their first time when him and Sage
- 2:00:14went up there. He's like it's just farm field,
- 2:00:16farm field, farm field, farm field.
- 2:00:18Racetrack and then it's not even a small racetrack you're like
- 2:00:20holy cow it's like a huge here and but that racing is
- 2:00:26definitely worth it so you need to get up there I know you said
- 2:00:29you got it circled but I'm excited because that's a track
- 2:00:31that's coming back that we could have lost and so.
- 2:00:35Tracks don't come back very often, so we need to appreciate
- 2:00:37this one that it is. And knowing what Donnie has done
- 2:00:41in Galesburg with his time when he was a promoter there, what
- 2:00:46he's done at Kalamazoo, I mean, 90 cars or 93, whatever it was
- 2:00:49on opening night at Kalamazoo with three classes, we didn't
- 2:00:54even have our 4, right? So I'm excited to see this week
- 2:00:57when we have our normal, you know, front wheel drive switch.
- 2:00:59Obviously with the autism race that might pull a few other
- 2:01:02drivers, you know, chasing a little extra money.
- 2:01:05Then you have the straight stocks, which I'm just, you
- 2:01:07know, straight stock racing in Kalamazoo can't get any better.
- 2:01:11But that limited class and I know a couple drivers race at
- 2:01:13Galesburg over the weekend. Jerry Pearman did really well
- 2:01:16with his car and he seems really excited for that.
- 2:01:19So so again, I'm excited to see all the new drivers in the
- 2:01:23limited group and then obviously templates.
- 2:01:25I'm a, you know, that feels like it's the most wide open it's
- 2:01:28been in a couple years with all the changes out during the
- 2:01:31offseason with drivers retiring and stepping back and everything
- 2:01:35and moving up. So, you know, I'm excited to see
- 2:01:37who takes the bull by the horns in that class and declares
- 2:01:40himself the challenger. And yeah, with Springport, you
- 2:01:45know, they just, I'm excited for that.
- 2:01:47I'm excited for Donnie. You know, he, he pours his heart
- 2:01:50into everything that he does. So I hope everyone gives him a
- 2:01:54chance when they open that up because they're going to need
- 2:01:56it. I mean, that's they're taking it
- 2:01:57on a lot, you know, to make this go and, and Springport's been
- 2:02:01tough, you know, for any owner in the history.
- 2:02:04I mean, it's had a lot of history, not always good history
- 2:02:07with it, you know, just a lot of closing time and, and different
- 2:02:10things. So when it opens back up, I
- 2:02:12just, I hope fans show up and, and, and pack it as much as they
- 2:02:15can. Cuz I, as I would always tell
- 2:02:19Donnie, I said I don't get paid enough to fluff anybody.
- 2:02:21I, I always told him I put up your show against anybody's.
- 2:02:25And I know sometimes, you know, the knock was, well, they only
- 2:02:28have 8 light models. Yeah, but you know what?
- 2:02:31Those ain't light models. You got race Bible in there.
- 2:02:33You had John Chadel, you had Jerry Pearman, you'd have Joey
- 2:02:36Barnhart in there. You just had so many great
- 2:02:39drivers from like, they may not have the quantity, but they have
- 2:02:42the quality. And oh, by the way, the two
- 2:02:44drivers, two of the drivers, you're just talk about one in
- 2:02:47Kalamazoo. So you know, and they beat
- 2:02:49everybody at Kalamazoo. So, you know, it's one of those
- 2:02:51things that it's like they had a lot of quality there and
- 2:02:54modified racing, if you love modified racing, watch them at
- 2:02:56Springport because that's that's where I fell in love with
- 2:03:00modified racing again. You know, I kind of got out of
- 2:03:02it. I wasn't a big fan of it, but
- 2:03:04watching it at Springport, I'm like, this is exciting and and
- 2:03:10just just yeah, modified that will sell a ticket in itself,
- 2:03:15but. Just as I said, race tracks
- 2:03:18don't come back very often and especially, yeah, I don't know,
- 2:03:22support the support then while we have the opportunity, we we
- 2:03:26lost the opportunity. We have it back.
- 2:03:28It's important that we get it right this time.
- 2:03:30Make sure you support Springport and Donnie and everything that's
- 2:03:32going on there. It's very exciting.
- 2:03:33I'm fired up and ready to get up there.
- 2:03:35So I'll see everybody up there when we when we can.
- 2:03:38Yep. So definitely stay tuned to
- 2:03:39their Facebook page as more comes in.
- 2:03:42And again, for Sheldon, obviously everyone has a really
- 2:03:46heavy heart from last week. I know today was Faith's
- 2:03:50birthday, but again, for Sheldon, my win Saturday was for
- 2:03:53Woody. Like Drew said, he was holding
- 2:03:55my wheel. And again, you just I think
- 2:03:58Jeremy Wardinger, you know, he's underrated in a lot of ways.
- 2:04:01I don't think people give him a lot of a lot of credit for the
- 2:04:04announcer that he is. And he's a Tony Eldridge, you
- 2:04:07know, learner like he learned from that tree.
- 2:04:10And obviously, I mean, Tony could sell you paint drying and
- 2:04:13make it sound like the most exciting that you've ever
- 2:04:15watched in your entire life and and feel like man, paint drawing
- 2:04:19is really exciting. And you know, but Jeremy, you
- 2:04:23know, he does a lot of the night of destructions and he can
- 2:04:25entertain the heck out of the crowd.
- 2:04:27But he did awesome, you know, for weekly racing, he could do
- 2:04:30that too. And you know, he he tries to
- 2:04:32know stats and all these things, but he was telling quite the
- 2:04:34story. Like it was almost like
- 2:04:36storytelling with with this 4 cylinder because you know, the
- 2:04:40way he kept saying for Sheldon, if you listen to the audio, even
- 2:04:44if you just don't watch the picture, but just listen to the
- 2:04:46audio, you know, pride of lions chasing Sheldon down.
- 2:04:49And just it's because that's what it felt like.
- 2:04:51You got all these mini stocks chasing down a front, you know,
- 2:04:54outlaw front wheel drive. That is all.
- 2:04:55These Harmons. All the Harmons again, they
- 2:04:58could have a few times and they didn't, so huge kudos to them
- 2:05:02because they Chris could have taken them outgoing to the
- 2:05:04checkered. Yeah.
- 2:05:06I mean, yeah, he didn't have to pull left.
- 2:05:07Yeah, he. Did not and he could have taken
- 2:05:10everybody out right and they didn't so huge kudos to them and
- 2:05:13and and leaving it all on the track but again for Sheldon his
- 2:05:17win was for Woody obviously Michael Wood a huge part of the
- 2:05:20national compacts Sheldon's one of those founding you know
- 2:05:23drivers of that group withdrew and all of them and and many
- 2:05:27other names. So again, I know a lot of the
- 2:05:29people on Saturday at Galesburg had heavy hearts, you know, with
- 2:05:32Woody not being there. But you know, as Drew said, as
- 2:05:36many others and you we saw him last Thursday, you know, he'd
- 2:05:39want us to laugh and keep going and, you know, just do our
- 2:05:42thing. And so again, but watching
- 2:05:44Sheldon race, if again, if you didn't watch that, if you don't
- 2:05:48watch anything else in my video, go watch that, you know, because
- 2:05:51that was definitely I think that was the race of the night, even
- 2:05:55though Andrew and Bug did the things that they did and they
- 2:05:59dominated once they got out front.
- 2:06:01And and just that one minute and 11 seconds of that street stock
- 2:06:04race with all the lead changes, you know, Haley all leading a
- 2:06:07lap and and getting out there, even though she was nervous as
- 2:06:10I'll get out to do that. You know, she did it and I went
- 2:06:14down it during the intermission. Like you're nervous.
- 2:06:16You're out there racing, you know, for a win in the heat race
- 2:06:19and side by side and you look comfortable.
- 2:06:21And I said, remember, you're a bull, you know, like, you know
- 2:06:23what you do? It's in the lineage, it's in the
- 2:06:26blood, right, But you know that men 11, you know, told a lot.
- 2:06:29But but Sheldon holding off all those ponies, I mean, I don't
- 2:06:33even know if you call them ponies.
- 2:06:34They might be like gazelles or whatever.
- 2:06:36You know, I think whatever the fastest animal is, pick that and
- 2:06:40you know, but that that was impressive.
- 2:06:41So if you watch nothing from new Paris and that and my YouTube
- 2:06:45video, go watch that race and watch it all unfold.
- 2:06:47So. Here, here.
- 2:06:49New new closing segment coming up with it on the spot.
- 2:06:51Was that your favorite thing that happened at the racetrack
- 2:06:52this week? Mine was a Crown Victoria
- 2:06:57featured on 40. I think they put on a great
- 2:06:59show. We talked about a little earlier
- 2:07:01the Terry's we're about putting each other in the wall.
- 2:07:03Someone and my my buddy Ronnie Holloway always puts on a great
- 2:07:06race when he's in it. That was my favorite thing at
- 2:07:08the track this weekend and that Uncrustable.
- 2:07:10I want to mention that again. I saw his post when he's like be
- 2:07:13a fluffy cloud. Be a fluffy fluffy, yeah.
- 2:07:16But Ronnie got a little excited in the heat race and we we've
- 2:07:20had this discussion. We're not going to be the old
- 2:07:21Ronnie anymore. We're new Ronnie, new Ronnie's a
- 2:07:23fluffy cloud. I'll answer the reason why I
- 2:07:28pause and and not because of hesitation, because I'd pick
- 2:07:31that, but I'd also pick that the commodity that I saw in the
- 2:07:35pits, you know, it just it was like it was almost like even the
- 2:07:38week before at Kalamazoo, new Paris, where everyone was just
- 2:07:40kind of glad to be back, right. You know, and obviously, you
- 2:07:44know, when competition gets going, you know, that's, you
- 2:07:47know, people get worked up in the adrenaline gets rushing and
- 2:07:50and all that kind of deal. And so then you're kind of like
- 2:07:52a man like mid season form. But, but you know, I Sheldon,
- 2:07:56you know what he did that would probably be 1 and then two would
- 2:07:59be just the, the, the joy. It seemed like people had been
- 2:08:03at the track. So it's like we need to remember
- 2:08:06that, you know, life's short. If Woody's, you know, anytime
- 2:08:10someone passes, we're always like, how do you remember them?
- 2:08:13And it's like, you know, let's remember we only get to do this
- 2:08:15for like 20 weeks a year if we're lucky.
- 2:08:18You know, we just had a range from the Kalamazoo.
- 2:08:19So that's 19 times that we get to do it now, right?
- 2:08:22That we only get to do this so often.
- 2:08:25There are people in this area who would love to be able to go
- 2:08:28to a track that they've lost, you know, the track that they'd
- 2:08:31love to go to. And we have an opportunity to go
- 2:08:33to track. I know it's very easy to go to
- 2:08:34social media and say things. I know it's very easy to go and
- 2:08:37be unhappy about this or that or, you know, the flag man
- 2:08:40looked at you wrong with the Black Flag and you didn't like
- 2:08:42how they looked at you, whatever, right?
- 2:08:44You know, but just remember we have that opportunity to do
- 2:08:47that. There are tons of race fans and
- 2:08:49there are tons of drivers who have apart, they don't race
- 2:08:51anymore. They don't go anywhere.
- 2:08:52They don't do anything cuz they've lost their track or
- 2:08:54their desire to do it. And so it's like just remember
- 2:08:57like we only get to do it so many months.
- 2:08:59And this was a really long winter for a lot of people.
- 2:09:02I mean, just brutal snow and brutal temperatures and brutal
- 2:09:06at all. And and obviously just with the
- 2:09:09environment that, you know, society's in, in general, that's
- 2:09:12exhausting for people. And it's like, let's get joy.
- 2:09:14Let's just remember, you know, we can let everything go with
- 2:09:17the track. It's a lifesaver for a lot of
- 2:09:19people. That's how I got back into
- 2:09:21racing, not as a lifesaver, but as a mental check, a mental
- 2:09:26break from reality, you know, go sit a track and I don't have to
- 2:09:30worry about anything, right? And so I mean, there's things to
- 2:09:33worry about, but you know, like I wasn't worried about my job.
- 2:09:36I wasn't worried about, you know, the things that were going
- 2:09:38on. And it's like I just went and
- 2:09:40sat and got to be around with people who, you know, I enjoy
- 2:09:43being around. So I think we need to just
- 2:09:45remember that, you know, even in the heart of competition and
- 2:09:48everything else that we have an opportunity to be at a
- 2:09:52racetrack. Let's not take it for granted
- 2:09:54because look at Ohio. How many tracks did they lose
- 2:09:58this year? Where now how many drivers have
- 2:10:00either A, just parked, they're not going anywhere, they're not
- 2:10:03going to race anywhere, they're not going to do anything they're
- 2:10:04selling at all, or B, are lost and homeless and have to do what
- 2:10:10Ron said, put in 600 miles just to go race, 400 miles to go
- 2:10:14race. So if they race at all, so I
- 2:10:17think we just remember that, you know it, Life's short.
- 2:10:20Just. Go to the races.
- 2:10:24Go to races. Live short go to the races a.
- 2:10:28Lot cheaper than going to WrestleMania, let's remember
- 2:10:30that. Yeah, I'm sure, I'm sure.
- 2:10:32And MLB baseball game and all these other things, right?
- 2:10:35Like you get to go and you get to have racetrack food and all
- 2:10:38that. You know what, Scott?
- 2:10:42I know you can't see what I'm doing right now, but you'll know
- 2:10:46anyway. You know, Scott Gates again, you
- 2:10:47know, we have a great friendship.
- 2:10:49I, you know, him and Amanda, they're, they just announced,
- 2:10:52you know, Amanda is pregnant. And of course there are people
- 2:10:56you know, Oh, I'm excited for them.
- 2:10:58And that's when they told me at the South Bend auto show because
- 2:11:01I got, I don't even remember what I was upset about, but oh,
- 2:11:04because there's, I won't say who, but there's someone who's
- 2:11:06engaged. And I'm like, when did this
- 2:11:08happen? I didn't even notice a thing.
- 2:11:09They kept it all under wraps. And I'm like, come on, you know,
- 2:11:13And so then Amanda's like, well, do you want to know something so
- 2:11:15you don't feel left out? And then I went, how many other
- 2:11:17people know, you know, not that it's any of my damn business
- 2:11:20anyways, you know, have to be in their succession line of like,
- 2:11:23first, I was really excited for that because I have a great
- 2:11:26relationship with Scott and Amanda.
- 2:11:28And that started in 2022 at Super Shoe.
- 2:11:31So again, that's a friendship that started.
- 2:11:33Now they know when they're racing and I'm on the roof, I'm
- 2:11:36neutral internally. I'm rooting for everyone to be
- 2:11:38safe, have fun, go out there. You know, that's why with the
- 2:11:41safety team, do a fist bump with them before every race night.
- 2:11:43I go, be safe, have fun. You know, I go over to KTS and
- 2:11:47and because right, they're risking their lives for fans and
- 2:11:51drivers. But so, you know, once the green
- 2:11:53flag is on and everything, it's you know, it's neutral, But
- 2:11:57after the races, let's go celebrate.
- 2:11:59So, but for Scott Amanda, obviously we have a friendship.
- 2:12:02They're the reason I've gone to PRI.
- 2:12:04They got me into that. So, so again, that's just that
- 2:12:09like some money is kind of what we mentioned earlier.
- 2:12:11You know, some people chase that.
- 2:12:12I thought your post was, you know, really, you know, well
- 2:12:16done that you did yesterday because that's what we got to
- 2:12:18remember. You know, we're in this to do
- 2:12:19our part and you know, we don't need to be staged to do it.
- 2:12:23So, you know, I didn't want to host a podcast, you know, the
- 2:12:26result I didn't want, I wanted to be behind the scenes pressing
- 2:12:30all the buttons for the podcast. I enjoy it.
- 2:12:32And I think it's gotten a chance for for me to connect with a lot
- 2:12:36of people too in a different ways.
- 2:12:37So other than that, I hear Thunder coming in with my power
- 2:12:41or whatever. I don't know if you got Thunder
- 2:12:42down there, but it sounds like over the the lake is just behind
- 2:12:45me about I guess 2 miles if you went straight.
- 2:12:48So it sounds like it's over the lake.
- 2:12:50So we're at that time of the night where it's time to go left
- 2:12:53and turn fast because. See you at the races.
- 2:12:57See you at the races and see you on Thursday night for the
- 2:12:59Thursday night throttle.
