Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Sam Constace struggles on a tricky whacker wicket, Manus Labershane
- 0:04Speaker 1: makes an emphatic statement and his Victorian teenager Ollie Peek
- 0:08Speaker 1: proved himself to be a star of the future. Welcome
- 0:10Speaker 1: to Domesticated. I'm justin Edwards. Nick Savage from Fox Cricket
- 0:14Speaker 1: is alongside me, Nick cracking round a shield cricket, wasn't it?
- 0:18Speaker 2: So many fascinating storylinings intertwining throughout all the games. It
- 0:22Speaker 2: was really exciting. We spoke last week at all all
- 0:24Speaker 2: the different batting candidates for the ashes. Some actually nailed it,
- 0:28Speaker 2: some really struggled for a variety of different reasons, and yeah,
- 0:31Speaker 2: there's so much to impact from three games of cricket.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It's great. Let's start at the top of the order.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Sam Constace couple of fails for New South Wales, but
- 0:38Speaker 1: it was a very tricky pitch over the whacker.
- 0:40Speaker 2: It's been a similar storyline for him in the first innings,
- 0:43Speaker 2: beaten on the inside edge by what's got to be said,
- 0:45Speaker 2: a pretty fantastic delivery by Joel Parris, the in swinger.
- 0:48Speaker 2: It's been his achilles heill for a while now. And
- 0:50Speaker 2: then in the second dig flashing out a wide one
- 0:53Speaker 2: caught in point, something we saw quite often actually in
- 0:55Speaker 2: the West Indies. It's just been more of the same
- 0:58Speaker 2: stuff we've come to expect from Sam Constas. Obviously he
- 1:00Speaker 2: had a great preseason, he got a century over in India,
- 1:03Speaker 2: but on these Australian decks, when they're off a bit
- 1:05Speaker 2: of spice, a bit of help for the bowlers, he
- 1:07Speaker 2: just can't seem to find his way through that opening
- 1:09Speaker 2: passage triggy conditions. Has to be said. It was a
- 1:12Speaker 2: low scoring game. I think a team only passed two
- 1:15Speaker 2: hundred once across those four days and Greg Shipp at
- 1:18Speaker 2: the new South Wells coach, came out and defended him.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But runs a currency he needs to start converting otherwise
- 1:24Speaker 2: he's going to list out on the Test side.
- 1:26Speaker 1: So it's really similar to the West Indies, which we
- 1:29Speaker 1: also tricky pitches for bowlers and Constance struggled there. It
- 1:32Speaker 1: is worth noting that everybody in the top three struggled
- 1:34Speaker 1: in that match. I think the average for the top
- 1:36Speaker 1: three was nine across the four innings of the match,
- 1:39Speaker 1: so nobody got runs in the top three. But he
- 1:44Speaker 1: tried probably two different approaches. He got a proper working
- 1:47Speaker 1: over in the first innings from Joe Parris, who is
- 1:50Speaker 1: one of the premier bowlers in shield cricket. He went
- 1:52Speaker 1: defensive and then Paris got a popery in swinger to
- 1:55Speaker 1: hit him on the pad. Then he went way more
- 1:57Speaker 1: aggressive in the second innings, got a couple of boundaries away,
- 2:00Speaker 1: but that ended up being his downfall as well.
- 2:01Speaker 2: It's just, yeah, as we've come to expect from him,
- 2:04Speaker 2: he seems to be stuck in two minds about what
- 2:06Speaker 2: process to take. We saw that between the two different innings.
- 2:10Speaker 2: An uns only talented player, but is he one of
- 2:12Speaker 2: the two best openers in the country at the moment
- 2:13Speaker 2: based on what we've seen in the past four days.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Perhaps not. There's a few other people are going to
- 2:18Speaker 2: putting their hand up.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Still time for him. A couple of shoe matches before
- 2:21Speaker 1: that Asher squad gets named. Now. The opposite of a
- 2:24Speaker 1: tricky pitch was Alan Borderfield over the weekend. Marnus Labershane,
- 2:28Speaker 1: regardless of how flat the week it was, one hundred
- 2:30Speaker 1: and sixty runs and terrific innings from him.
- 2:33Speaker 2: He's someone who we spoke about for ages hasn't been
- 2:36Speaker 2: getting hundred's. Basically it's been about eighteen months before this
- 2:39Speaker 2: week that he had a first class hundred starts. The
- 2:41Speaker 2: sum with the One Day Cup hundred when he scored
- 2:43Speaker 2: it basically run a ball, and this one he got
- 2:45Speaker 2: one hundred and six year old, as you said, batting
- 2:48Speaker 2: at a strike cred of about eighty. He is really
- 2:50Speaker 2: upping his ante. We saw in the Test side the
- 2:53Speaker 2: last four months he was in the Test side very defensive,
- 2:55Speaker 2: struggling to get going very slow starts which on the
- 2:58Speaker 2: border Gavasko trophy, going along at a really quick great
- 3:01Speaker 2: at the moment, this is a very different manus Lavash
- 3:03Speaker 2: and he's really actually worked a lot. Having him dropped
- 3:06Speaker 2: from the Test side ahead the western of his he's
- 3:07Speaker 2: put the work in and I mean we seem to
- 3:10Speaker 2: throw ball to a is a lot, understandably, but he
- 3:12Speaker 2: seems to be in that best eleven at this stage.
- 3:15Speaker 1: He looks fantastic and that's more than the actual scoring
- 3:18Speaker 1: of the runs, which are of course important. It was
- 3:20Speaker 1: more about how he looked. He looked close to being
- 3:24Speaker 1: back to his best, and his best is not just
- 3:26Speaker 1: being in the top six batters in the country. It's
- 3:28Speaker 1: been in the top six batters in the world probably
- 3:30Speaker 1: and he looked close to that fluid drives pool shots.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It looked so good and if he's looking like that,
- 3:37Speaker 1: it's probably going to be pretty simple for the selectors.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Manus is in and then you're worrying about where else
- 3:43Speaker 1: you're putting the all rounder or if he's at three
- 3:45Speaker 1: or opening. But if he's batting like that, they are
- 3:47Speaker 1: going to want him in, and you'd suggest he's probably
- 3:50Speaker 1: I would think now he's probably more likely than unlikely
- 3:53Speaker 1: to play the first Test right at the moment, I.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Mean formal world number one, and it showed this week.
- 3:58Speaker 2: The selectors have probably wanted him to get off to
- 4:00Speaker 2: a great start the summer because it kind of fixes
- 4:03Speaker 2: a problem for them. If Manus was going runs, they
- 4:05Speaker 2: probably had to gamble on an unknown, probably give someone
- 4:08Speaker 2: a debut, or go back to Constance and they probably
- 4:11Speaker 2: didn't want to do that. Marnus feels safe. He's played
- 4:13Speaker 2: the ashes before, he succeeded in the Ashes before, He's
- 4:16Speaker 2: come up against the England quicks several times over the
- 4:19Speaker 2: past few years, and let's be honest, Australian team looks
- 4:22Speaker 2: stronger when there's a good Marnus in that top six,
- 4:25Speaker 2: So yes, it's pretty exciting for nationalectors. George Bailey was
- 4:28Speaker 2: there in Brisbane watching that knock, which certainly doesn't help.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It doesn't hurt either.
- 4:32Speaker 1: That helps do it in front of him. He would
- 4:34Speaker 1: have also seen a century from Matt Renshaw. He's then
- 4:37Speaker 1: been picked in the one day squad. I suspect he
- 4:39Speaker 1: was probably getting picked in that one day scud whether
- 4:41Speaker 1: he got the runs or not, because he's list day
- 4:42Speaker 1: form over the last year or so has been extremely impressive.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Now he goes to the one day squad. Do you
- 4:48Speaker 1: think that is a positive for him in terms of
- 4:51Speaker 1: his test chances because he's in front of the Australian ives,
- 4:54Speaker 1: in front of big crowds he performs there. Or is
- 4:57Speaker 1: it better taking better for Manus Labushaan who missed out
- 5:00Speaker 1: on that one day squad. We'll now go back and
- 5:02Speaker 1: have a couple more Shield games.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I think you're actually writing that for Renshoyd. It probably
- 5:07Speaker 2: does hurt his ass's chances. Let's be real. I mean
- 5:09Speaker 2: when people are scoring hundreds in the Shield, that's when
- 5:11Speaker 2: the conversations around test chances come up. Really for Renchal,
- 5:15Speaker 2: his mind should be kind of looking at twenty twenty
- 5:17Speaker 2: seven World Cup, he's a chance of actually being that
- 5:19Speaker 2: fifty over squad. As you mentioned, he's been so great
- 5:21Speaker 2: for Australia A and Queensland in the fifty over cricket.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I could see him playing a role maybe instead of
- 5:26Speaker 2: Manus at that three or four position.
- 5:28Speaker 1: In the adio retired now from one day.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Exactly right, there's that missing cog there in the middle order,
- 5:33Speaker 2: that kind of anchor role which Smith did for nearly
- 5:36Speaker 2: a decade so successfully. If Renchalk can have a go
- 5:39Speaker 2: in this India series nail it, he should keep half
- 5:42Speaker 2: anurd twenty twenty seven. Maybe that's where he should slightly
- 5:44Speaker 2: shift focus to. If he does well in that India series,
- 5:47Speaker 2: is every chance he could get a nation's core. But
- 5:49Speaker 2: as as we've mentioned, Maru is probably more likely. We'll
- 5:52Speaker 2: touch on Jake Weather or later. He looks like a
- 5:54Speaker 2: very strong opener. Renchal maybe needs to sort of shift
- 5:57Speaker 2: his national focus.
- 5:58Speaker 1: On to the white ball stuff, and it's one of
- 5:59Speaker 1: the things that the selectors have to deal with. There's
- 6:02Speaker 1: so many different parts. You're going to have Renshaw playing
- 6:05Speaker 1: whiteball cricket, but against a really strong Indian attack, how
- 6:09Speaker 1: do you weigh up those runs versus Sheffield Shield runs.
- 6:12Speaker 1: How do you weigh up runs at that allan boarder
- 6:15Speaker 1: field pitch that we saw on the weekend, whereas if
- 6:17Speaker 1: Constas put on seventy odd at the whacker on that pitch,
- 6:19Speaker 1: that's probably as valuable as one hundred and fifty. So
- 6:22Speaker 1: that's what everything that the selectors have to weigh up,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and that's why that's why we have human beings selectors
- 6:26Speaker 1: that pick teams, and we don't pick teams on the
- 6:28Speaker 1: stats and on spreadsheets. So that's all to watch. Also
- 6:32Speaker 1: on that flat wicket in Queensland was Jake Weatherold couple
- 6:35Speaker 1: of fifties. I think it was sixty seven and fifty seven,
- 6:38Speaker 1: not that like an average of sixties great probably needs
- 6:43Speaker 1: one hundred or two to really contend for that spot.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And in that first settings he was dropped at first
- 6:48Speaker 2: of Bios and Kowaj, which is an interesting little storyline there.
- 6:50Speaker 2: He looks great, as we've seen from the last twelve
- 6:53Speaker 2: months from him, very fluid, very attacking, getting off to
- 6:56Speaker 2: a strong start. But as you touched on, it really
- 6:58Speaker 2: is a matter of converting those starts into into triple
- 7:01Speaker 2: figures because you know, for the casual viewer, people only
- 7:04Speaker 2: really pay attention to hundreds, and in what was such
- 7:07Speaker 2: a high scoring game, the fifties and sixties don't seem
- 7:10Speaker 2: terribly valuable. But I think, you know, it's important that
- 7:13Speaker 2: he got his somewhere off to a strong start. You know,
- 7:15Speaker 2: unlike some of the other names Nathan McSweeney, Cameron Bancroft,
- 7:19Speaker 2: who really struggle this week, the fact that he's gotten
- 7:21Speaker 2: his summer off to a strong start. He's clearly in
- 7:23Speaker 2: the runs, he's looking good. If there is that opportunity
- 7:26Speaker 2: there in the Test or in the near future, he'll
- 7:29Speaker 2: be ready because he's in fine form. He looks great,
- 7:31Speaker 2: he's in the form of his career.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And it might not be a case of or Manus.
- 7:36Speaker 1: There may well be room for both if they choose
- 7:38Speaker 1: to go with only the one all rounder. And we'll
- 7:39Speaker 1: talk about Cameron Green a little bit later. If Green
- 7:43Speaker 1: or Webster ba't six, two and three are both available,
- 7:46Speaker 1: you've got the opener alongside Kuwaja and potentially the number three.
- 7:49Speaker 1: And if they put Marnus back at three, there's still
- 7:52Speaker 1: room for weather Orld or Constance or any of these
- 7:54Speaker 1: guys that we're talking about. So just because Labashane has
- 7:57Speaker 1: taken his chance this one Shill game, there's still a
- 8:00Speaker 1: couple more ago. There's still plenty of cricket to play
- 8:02Speaker 1: out before the Ashes, right.
- 8:03Speaker 2: It really does come down to what the national selectors want.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Since David Warner's retirement, they've stuck by this the best
- 8:09Speaker 2: six batters in the country and will manipulate them and
- 8:11Speaker 2: fit them into the top six. And we've seen Steve
- 8:14Speaker 2: Smith open minus lavish and open. They've kind of manipulated
- 8:16Speaker 2: the team in a way to make this work. Or
- 8:19Speaker 2: do they pick the players based on their preferred role
- 8:21Speaker 2: minus three Steve Smith, four Green realistic at six is
- 8:25Speaker 2: probably where he's the strongest at the moment, and then
- 8:28Speaker 2: a specialist opener alongside Kwaja that would mean Website unfortunately
- 8:32Speaker 2: missing out. Well we haven't touched on is he missed
- 8:34Speaker 2: this round of Shield because of a minor ankle injury.
- 8:37Speaker 2: He's meant to be back for the next Shield round.
- 8:39Speaker 2: But it really just comes down to what the selectors
- 8:41Speaker 2: want from this top six and we don't have a
- 8:43Speaker 2: firm clue of what that is just yet, but maybe
- 8:45Speaker 2: the next couple of year rounds will help make the
- 8:47Speaker 2: picture a little bit clearer.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I think it's probably more likely than last summer that
- 8:51Speaker 1: they go with a specialist opener, seeing as McSweeney didn't
- 8:54Speaker 1: quite work. But we'll wait and see how that unfowls now.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Speaking of South Australia last week, I said I smoking
- 9:00Speaker 1: for an ashes spot was Henry Hunt and he's gone
- 9:04Speaker 1: out and made me look very good by getting one
- 9:06Speaker 1: hundred and thirty six in the first innings. It was
- 9:09Speaker 1: a lot of balls. He past three hundred balls on
- 9:11Speaker 1: that first day, but the opposition were bowling so wide
- 9:16Speaker 1: to him. He was just so patient, leaving alone outside
- 9:19Speaker 1: the offstar.
- 9:20Speaker 2: He's done this before. I remember a few years ago
- 9:22Speaker 2: when South Australia were performing really terribly. Actually in the Shield,
- 9:25Speaker 2: they'd come to the bottom. They got the wooden spoon tears
- 9:27Speaker 2: in a row. The one match they really kind of
- 9:30Speaker 2: kickstarted things for the red Backs formerly known as red Backs,
- 9:33Speaker 2: was him batting out a fourth day and eking out
- 9:35Speaker 2: a draw. I think got ninety seven that day. Towards
- 9:37Speaker 2: the end of the summer. This reminded me a lot
- 9:39Speaker 2: about that he was so patient, he patted the entire
- 9:41Speaker 2: the first day and yeah, he really has the makings
- 9:44Speaker 2: of a traditional opener. You know, you think of you know,
- 9:47Speaker 2: the generation's past, not so much the David Warner's the
- 9:51Speaker 2: you know, the Ben Ducketts. So he's seen now a
- 9:54Speaker 2: proper old school opener one hundred percent, and no, it's
- 9:57Speaker 2: great to see. He's been in and around Australia for
- 9:59Speaker 2: a while. He he's had a really strong knack of
- 10:02Speaker 2: converting to triple hundred. I think got three shield hundreds
- 10:04Speaker 2: last summer. And you know, if he continues pressing his case,
- 10:08Speaker 2: he's every chance. I mean, it depends if the national
- 10:11Speaker 2: sectors want that kind of old school opener. Warner did
- 10:14Speaker 2: it so successfully. Maybe they want more of an attacking
- 10:16Speaker 2: player Manus two point zero or weather Orld. But he certainly,
- 10:20Speaker 2: namely at the moment he looks fantastic.
- 10:22Speaker 1: His twelfth first class century. It was this one against
- 10:24Speaker 1: Scott Bowland too. I mentioned last week about how one
- 10:26Speaker 1: of his ones last year was against a pink ball
- 10:29Speaker 1: bowling Lance Morris and Jay Richardson. He gets difficult runs,
- 10:33Speaker 1: it seems, and I think that is something that will
- 10:35Speaker 1: count in his favor. Still, I think he's a little
- 10:37Speaker 1: bit down the Peking Godo. Last week we did our
- 10:39Speaker 1: top fives. Labershane was at one for you, Weatherord was
- 10:42Speaker 1: at one for me. I probably inverted that now. I
- 10:45Speaker 1: think I'm with you now that Marnus is number one
- 10:48Speaker 1: with Weatherord too, Are you with the same I think
- 10:50Speaker 1: he had constants two last week.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I think you're exactly right. And Manus is well aheaded
- 10:55Speaker 2: this stay. It's just through his experience, you know, multiple
- 10:58Speaker 2: test hundreds of form number one. But yeah, it really
- 11:01Speaker 2: is going to come down to the configuration about top six.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Is he better as a number three or an opener?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Should Steve Smith a bat at three to make room
- 11:09Speaker 2: for Cameron Green at four? These all things are the
- 11:11Speaker 2: national election. I're gonna have to weigh up over the
- 11:13Speaker 2: next month or so.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Speaking of Cameron Green, He's long awaited return to the
- 11:18Speaker 1: bowl increase. We're told and expecting that he was going
- 11:21Speaker 1: to bowl eight overs, but with the way the match
- 11:23Speaker 1: played out with the rain delay, they didn't want him
- 11:25Speaker 1: to bowl on consecutive days, so he only bowed the
- 11:28Speaker 1: four overs, took a wicket second ball day. Did you
- 11:31Speaker 1: see enough from him?
- 11:32Speaker 2: Oh, he's back, No, one hundred percent. He had good
- 11:34Speaker 2: rhythm and fluidy through his running increase and that's really important.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Maybe a little bit slower than he was four or
- 11:39Speaker 2: five years ago when he first burst onto the scene
- 11:42Speaker 2: as a specialist fastballer batting at eight or nine. Very exciting.
- 11:45Speaker 2: He'll build up towards the Ashes. He says he expects
- 11:48Speaker 2: to be basically back to full fitness for that first Test,
- 11:51Speaker 2: and yeah, I'm sure next round, if he does play
- 11:53Speaker 2: the second round or the third round, he'll make a
- 11:56Speaker 2: few longer spells. He'll hopefully take a few more wickets
- 11:59Speaker 2: and he's a perfect accomplice for Australia's side because you
- 12:03Speaker 2: know in this Ashes series, bowl ir rotation is going
- 12:06Speaker 2: to be huge and he's going to be the kind
- 12:09Speaker 2: of the glue for this bowling attack at many stages Traples, Summer,
- 12:11Speaker 2: so fingers cross. He can keep his back together, he
- 12:14Speaker 2: can build up his body, his strength and be a
- 12:16Speaker 2: massive weapon for Australia.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I wonder if, if how much the shield form of
- 12:21Speaker 1: cam Green and Webster will come into that selection conversation
- 12:25Speaker 1: nineteen and twenty four with the bat for Green, certainly
- 12:28Speaker 1: nothing special, but again that pitch was very tricky and
- 12:31Speaker 1: he got this incredible court and bold. Charlie Stogo did
- 12:34Speaker 1: really well, if there's under if that, say cams Green's
- 12:39Speaker 1: highest scores going into the first Test, that will be
- 12:41Speaker 1: a consideration of selectors. If that's guys, your number three,
- 12:46Speaker 1: you're probably going to want to be seeing some more
- 12:48Speaker 1: runs to make sure he's If you're putting him and
- 12:52Speaker 1: Webster in the team with Green batting higher up the order,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I think he probably needs to be doing better than
- 12:57Speaker 1: nineteen and twenty four in the next couple of year matches.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I think, barring anything dramatic, he's in that team. I
- 13:02Speaker 2: think I feel like he's in there no matter.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Do you think Webster's in the team, no matter what.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I don't think so. I touched on a bit before,
- 13:10Speaker 2: but he missed this first round. If it does fix
- 13:14Speaker 2: a lot of problems. If Webster goes out of the
- 13:16Speaker 2: starting eleven, you've got Marnison's preferred shot in this preferred spot.
- 13:20Speaker 2: We've got two specialist openers. The problem with Webster it's
- 13:23Speaker 2: a good problem to have. He's been playing so well
- 13:25Speaker 2: during that West Indies tour with baton Wall. He was
- 13:27Speaker 2: performing superbly and in really difficult conditions. He rescued the
- 13:30Speaker 2: Aussies on multiple occasions. And then his debut at the
- 13:33Speaker 2: beginning of this year against India was just incredible. He
- 13:36Speaker 2: really stood up. He's someone who's done well domestically for
- 13:39Speaker 2: multiple years now deserve the call up. It would be
- 13:42Speaker 2: so harsh if he was to miss out for this
- 13:44Speaker 2: Test side. But that little ankle injury hasn't done himself
- 13:47Speaker 2: any massive favors. He's now on probably got two rounds
- 13:50Speaker 2: of shield to prove himself is in the He probably
- 13:54Speaker 2: is in the best Australian eleven, but I don't know
- 13:57Speaker 2: if he's in the most balanced Australian eleven. I feel
- 14:00Speaker 2: like just to get that balance right, you want Smith
- 14:03Speaker 2: at four, you want Manus three and two special so
- 14:05Speaker 2: openers and it would be really, really tough, but it
- 14:07Speaker 2: would fix a lot of things for the selectors.
- 14:09Speaker 1: What I can imagine about bow Webster is he's got
- 14:12Speaker 1: these two shield matches and he's probably gonna make runs
- 14:14Speaker 1: because he always made. Yeah, let's move on to someone
- 14:18Speaker 1: a little younger, a lot younger, Ollie Peek. What a
- 14:20Speaker 1: fantastic innings this was to win the game for Victoria
- 14:24Speaker 1: at seventy not out on day four. It was fantastic
- 14:27Speaker 1: at Adelaide over to see a young player just grab
- 14:30Speaker 1: the spotlight like that and.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Was lucky in his first ball. Actually, Henry hunts your guy,
- 14:35Speaker 2: that short leg a very tough chance. He didn't middle
- 14:38Speaker 2: it to him. It was the one ones that was
- 14:40Speaker 2: in and out in an instance and barely had any
- 14:43Speaker 2: time to rackt. But yes, got that chance first ball
- 14:45Speaker 2: and made the most of it, guided them to a
- 14:47Speaker 2: really really gritty victory, a really unlikely when against the
- 14:50Speaker 2: defending champions of the Shield as well. Nineteen years old,
- 14:53Speaker 2: he also got a fifty on debut, which was about
- 14:56Speaker 2: eight months ago at the start of this year for
- 14:58Speaker 2: Victoria Nationals. Lectors have been keeping on him. He's been
- 15:01Speaker 2: on two Australia eight tours now as well, got runs
- 15:04Speaker 2: against Sri Lanka over the winter, struggled against India last month.
- 15:08Speaker 2: But another player for the future. How many of these
- 15:10Speaker 2: undern eighty World Cup champions are coming through and putting
- 15:13Speaker 2: into amazing performances. Even in grade cricket in Sydney, we're
- 15:16Speaker 2: seeing some of the players put into record breaking performances.
- 15:20Speaker 1: It is that age bracket, isn't it. So it's hardest
- 15:22Speaker 1: seeing who got the three hundred in grade cricket, same
- 15:25Speaker 1: age bracket as Sam Constest. There's Harry Dixon who's at
- 15:27Speaker 1: Victoria as well. They're all sort of looking like they're
- 15:30Speaker 1: going to be stars of the future, and the future
- 15:32Speaker 1: of Australian cricket certainly looks bright. Let's move to the bowlers.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Now we've heard some news recently that Pat Cummins highly
- 15:40Speaker 1: unlikely to be playing that first Ashes Test. So you
- 15:43Speaker 1: imagine the Ashes squad or they'll probably have at score
- 15:45Speaker 1: for the first two tests and there will be four
- 15:47Speaker 1: quicks in that squad. That's what they normally do, so
- 15:50Speaker 1: you know three of those are going to be Stark,
- 15:51Speaker 1: Bowland and Hazerwood. Who's the fourth is the big question?
- 15:55Speaker 1: Who are you leaning towards at the moment.
- 15:57Speaker 2: I guess it's worth acknowledging as well that Perth, of
- 15:59Speaker 2: all the venue is probably the least conducer for Scott Boland.
- 16:02Speaker 2: You've always seen him do well on Victoria and Sydney
- 16:05Speaker 2: and then a pink Hoorn Brisbane is very Scott Boland.
- 16:08Speaker 2: He's none one on Adelaide, the traditionally fast deck and
- 16:11Speaker 2: Perth isn't great for a high one thirty k bowler,
- 16:14Speaker 2: so they might be looking for a bit of extra
- 16:16Speaker 2: pace for that first Test. You know, we look around
- 16:18Speaker 2: the country. Who's there. Lance Morris is injured, Spencer Johnson
- 16:21Speaker 2: is injured. They're probably the two guys who would have
- 16:23Speaker 2: come in. Brendan Doggett missed this first round due to
- 16:26Speaker 2: a minor issue. He'll hopefully back for the next round.
- 16:29Speaker 2: In theory he's the next in line. He was the
- 16:31Speaker 2: reserve ball of the World Test Championship Trophy, but that
- 16:34Speaker 2: doesn't assure him selection. Sean Abbott, he's been in and
- 16:37Speaker 2: around the side for Ages, He's always performed well for Shield,
- 16:40Speaker 2: He's performed well in one day stuff for Australia and
- 16:42Speaker 2: New South Wales. He's a very very strong chance. His
- 16:46Speaker 2: problem is he's getting picked in these Australian White Wall
- 16:48Speaker 2: squads and isn't getting the chance in Shield cricket. I
- 16:50Speaker 2: think he was just named in the Indies series that's
- 16:52Speaker 2: coming up as well, so he's not going to have
- 16:55Speaker 2: a lot of red ball cricket under his belt. And
- 16:58Speaker 2: look Fergus O'Neil a wicket this week unfortunately bold Well
- 17:01Speaker 2: but went wicket less. So it isn't immediately apparent who's
- 17:05Speaker 2: going to be there. Joie Richardson is still recovering. He's
- 17:07Speaker 2: not going to be ready. We assume for this first test.
- 17:11Speaker 2: My money at this stage someone Brendan Doggett, just because
- 17:13Speaker 2: of the hierarchy that we've seen over the last six months.
- 17:16Speaker 2: But it's pretty open at the moment. I mean, if
- 17:18Speaker 2: they're looking for pace for that first test, or who
- 17:20Speaker 2: are some of the fastest balls around the country. A
- 17:22Speaker 2: lot of them are are nursing back complaints.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I wouldn't rule out Michael Neiser either. I think he's
- 17:27Speaker 1: done the couple of opportunities that he's got, he's done
- 17:31Speaker 1: well and he'd pinkball specialist with that second ball test Brisbane,
- 17:35Speaker 1: he's home ground. I wouldn't rule him out either. A
- 17:38Speaker 1: couple of great performers on the weekends, Jake Lehman, Jordan Silk,
- 17:42Speaker 1: Pete Hanscom all getting centuries, but in that middle order
- 17:45Speaker 1: it just feels like there's just no spot for them
- 17:48Speaker 1: in the Australian team. Some of them are performing so
- 17:50Speaker 1: well and have done for a number for a long
- 17:52Speaker 1: time now. I think it was Jake Lehman's four hundred
- 17:55Speaker 1: and four shield.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Matches right, but there's just just doesn't feel like there's
- 17:58Speaker 2: a spot for them anyway, does it. I mean at
- 17:59Speaker 2: the moment they're trying to fit four people into three
- 18:02Speaker 2: spots from four, five, six and that test side. So
- 18:05Speaker 2: for those guys, Hansom particular, he was meant to be
- 18:07Speaker 2: on that India to a couple of years, or we
- 18:09Speaker 2: all assumed he was going to go to India and
- 18:11Speaker 2: then seeing at the last moment missed out on selection,
- 18:14Speaker 2: there's just no spots for these guys unfortunately. Jake Lean
- 18:16Speaker 2: and my goodness, he is killing at the moment. He's
- 18:18Speaker 2: been in and out of that South Australian side for
- 18:21Speaker 2: years and now he's helped them towards that drought breaking
- 18:24Speaker 2: shield title last year. He started superbly here. It's just
- 18:28Speaker 2: unfortunately that you know, Australia doesn't need another number five
- 18:31Speaker 2: at the moment, and they probably won't for a few years.
- 18:33Speaker 2: It's with Travis Head. There no exciting talents. The depth
- 18:37Speaker 2: of Australian middle order batting is as strong as it
- 18:40Speaker 2: has been for a while. But yeah, unfortunately for those guys,
- 18:43Speaker 2: it's going to take something pretty special to bash the doorda.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Stro Go like Josh Englist into that middle order mix
- 18:47Speaker 1: as well. It does feel that it feels as though
- 18:50Speaker 1: Australia it has better middle order depth, bit of middle
- 18:53Speaker 1: order options, But it might also be the case that
- 18:55Speaker 1: middle order runs are just easier. You don't have the
- 18:58Speaker 1: new ball and especially the kookabar is the way they
- 19:00Speaker 1: are at the moment. All the players are saying that
- 19:03Speaker 1: the first forty ores or so are really difficult, and
- 19:05Speaker 1: then it gets much easier. So perhaps perhaps the middle
- 19:09Speaker 1: order players aren't so much better than the top order players.
- 19:11Speaker 1: It's actually just easier to score hundreds in the middle order.
- 19:14Speaker 1: But maybe that's not the case, so we have to
- 19:17Speaker 1: wait and see. There were two really bizarre incidents in
- 19:20Speaker 1: that New South Wales WA game. Can you explain what
- 19:23Speaker 1: happened with Chris Green?
- 19:25Speaker 2: I didn't love this and the present this incident sets,
- 19:28Speaker 2: but Chris Green a great delivery. He ducks down, it
- 19:32Speaker 2: gets very close to the glove, but clips his helmet
- 19:34Speaker 2: and goes through the keeper and he's given up, caught
- 19:36Speaker 2: behind the immediate replays. It was very very close, an
- 19:39Speaker 2: understandable decision from the umpire Jery Aboot. I believe it was,
- 19:44Speaker 2: but Chris Green's immediate reaction was to say no, hang
- 19:47Speaker 2: on I've been hitting the head here. The protocol is
- 19:50Speaker 2: I need to be checked for a concussion hit. He
- 19:52Speaker 2: was essentially in a kind of cheeky way, sort of
- 19:55Speaker 2: sittling into the umpire that, no, this didn't touch my glove.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I've been clocked on the helmet here. Initially started walking off,
- 20:01Speaker 2: and the umpires consulted each other and again gave him out.
- 20:04Speaker 2: He started slowly walking off. It appears to me that
- 20:07Speaker 2: replays came up on the big screen and the umpires
- 20:10Speaker 2: saw what had happened, and it was from that they
- 20:13Speaker 2: consulted again. They had another chat and brought them back
- 20:16Speaker 2: to to continue his innings. Ultimately, the right decision was
- 20:20Speaker 2: made within the context of the game, which is good
- 20:23Speaker 2: for cricket. But what I don't like to see is
- 20:25Speaker 2: this sort of opens the door for batter is to say,
- 20:28Speaker 2: if I argue enough and I protests enough, maybe eventually
- 20:32Speaker 2: I'll get my way and stay in. I don't want
- 20:34Speaker 2: to see throughout the shield over the next few months,
- 20:37Speaker 2: batters pointing up towards the site screen saying, not the
- 20:39Speaker 2: site screen, so the big screen, saying, look at the replay.
- 20:41Speaker 2: I clearly edged this, or I didn't edge this. It's
- 20:44Speaker 2: a really bad present. And yes the Cricketstralia has sanctioned
- 20:48Speaker 2: Chris Screen from this the right decision. He did not
- 20:52Speaker 2: follow the code of conduct that we've come to expect
- 20:54Speaker 2: from players. But yeah, it was a pretty ugly incident
- 20:57Speaker 2: even though the right outcome was reached.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Think I'm with you there, it's coming to the correct
- 21:04Speaker 1: decision via the wrong method. Is that actually the correct decision?
- 21:08Speaker 1: Perhaps not. The other intercident was Camaron Bancroft. So he
- 21:12Speaker 1: gets gets given out court behind for a ball that
- 21:16Speaker 1: he hasn't hit. But what happens does It clips the
- 21:20Speaker 1: off stump. You see the bail jump up and down
- 21:23Speaker 1: and it goes through to the keeper. So the umpire
- 21:26Speaker 1: hears the wooden noise and goes, yes, that's out now.
- 21:29Speaker 1: While Cameron Bancroft did not hit that ball and was
- 21:32Speaker 1: given out court behind, I don't think he has a
- 21:35Speaker 1: case to say that he was unlucky because at the
- 21:37Speaker 1: end of the day he's played and mister ball that's
- 21:39Speaker 1: hit off stump.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Exactly exactly right. I don't know if you remember about
- 21:43Speaker 2: four years ago during the previous Ashes tour in Australia
- 21:46Speaker 2: in Sydney, Cameron Green bowled Ben Stokes and the ball
- 21:50Speaker 2: was rick shade towards first slip. It went on an
- 21:52Speaker 2: angle and Ben Stokes was given out caught behind. He
- 21:56Speaker 2: reviewed it and it showed that no, it had smacked
- 21:58Speaker 2: into off stump and gone off in a different direction.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I don't know the physics of these things. I'm not
- 22:03Speaker 2: going to even go into that, but it happens. It
- 22:05Speaker 2: happens very often actually in the game, so and on,
- 22:08Speaker 2: just on Cameron Bancroft quickly. He seems to find a
- 22:10Speaker 2: way of getting it on weird ways. I don't if
- 22:12Speaker 2: you remember many years ago now he was caught at
- 22:14Speaker 2: leg slip four innings a row in the Sheffield Shield.
- 22:17Speaker 2: He just has a knack of funny, weird ways of
- 22:19Speaker 2: getting out.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Cameron Bankok does also in that wa New South Wales game,
- 22:23Speaker 1: Will Saltzman what a fantastic David Player of the match
- 22:26Speaker 1: on debut, really exciting player.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been in around the Sydney Thunder and Blue
- 22:30Speaker 2: squad for a few years now and.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Deserve this call up.
- 22:33Speaker 2: He has been actually talking up his batting a lot
- 22:35Speaker 2: during the preseason. He's been very excited about you know,
- 22:38Speaker 2: hopefully spent himself as not just a bowling arounder, but
- 22:41Speaker 2: a full on all rounder, and he showed that to
- 22:43Speaker 2: be the case this week. He actually scored one hundred
- 22:45Speaker 2: against Victoria during a warm up one day game as
- 22:48Speaker 2: well leading into this summer, so he's in great form.
- 22:51Speaker 2: You know, we had Chris Screen batting up at Seeks.
- 22:53Speaker 2: We'll have Jack Edwards back in the side. The depth
- 22:55Speaker 2: of batting in this New Southwlles side going right down
- 22:58Speaker 2: to eight nine, ten minutes short it comes back in
- 23:00Speaker 2: as well. That's gonna be a really strong batting line
- 23:02Speaker 2: up for this New South Wales squad.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And Saltzman in his list day games that he's played
- 23:06Speaker 1: for New South Wales, he's been batting down at number eight,
- 23:08Speaker 1: so he's trusted with number seven. It's only one sport, right,
- 23:11Speaker 1: but you expect a lot more runs out of your
- 23:12Speaker 1: number seven than you do out of your number eight.
- 23:15Speaker 1: So with Jack Edwards coming back in, there's a lot
- 23:18Speaker 1: of depth in that New South Wales side. It seems
- 23:20Speaker 1: they didn't do all that well in the Shield last year,
- 23:22Speaker 1: but got a really important win this week, one of
- 23:26Speaker 1: two winners this week.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Well. For years, New South Wales have been one of
- 23:29Speaker 2: the most under performing teams and for about three is
- 23:32Speaker 2: and a Western Astralia with a champions So this feels
- 23:34Speaker 2: like a bit of a shift in momentum for both sides.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Really for New South Wales they lost a former captain
- 23:40Speaker 2: and Moses Honriquez over the winter and obviously Saltman coming
- 23:44Speaker 2: in as a genuinal rounder helps restore that balance a bit.
- 23:47Speaker 2: We're going to have Mitchell Stark Josh Haswood playing at
- 23:50Speaker 2: least one Shield game heading into the break. See Smith
- 23:53Speaker 2: will play hopefully one game. Sam const has can offly
- 23:56Speaker 2: find some form. It's a very strong news so well
- 23:58Speaker 2: side heading to the Big Bash break. If they can
- 23:59Speaker 2: be number one or two, they could hopefully get a
- 24:02Speaker 2: chance to push for that final side because the most
- 24:04Speaker 2: recent title was twenty twenty when the final was canceled
- 24:08Speaker 2: during lockdown, and I know there are some murmurs and
- 24:10Speaker 2: grumbles of whether they even deserve that title considering they
- 24:13Speaker 2: didn't play the finals. So for them just to sort
- 24:15Speaker 2: of cement their authority back on this competition a good
- 24:18Speaker 2: chance for them to hopefully get off to a good
- 24:20Speaker 2: start this summer.
- 24:21Speaker 1: So many storylines popping around Shield Cricket. Nick Savage, thank
- 24:25Speaker 1: you for your time. We get on domesticated. We are
- 24:27Speaker 1: building up to the ASHES summer. What a huge summer
- 24:31Speaker 1: we have in store for us. A couple more shield
- 24:32Speaker 1: matches before that ASHES squad is selected.
