- 0:40Speaker 1: At Radio is a radiophonic novella, a podcast archiving the legacies,
- 0:45Speaker 1: geniuses and brilliance of women and fans of color. That
- 0:49Speaker 1: is who we are and that is what we do.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It's been a while since we've recorded a hot minute.
- 0:54Speaker 1: We took an unexpected break. Um, Mala and I have
- 1:00Speaker 1: been working behind the scenes, so we haven't actually been
- 1:03Speaker 1: able to record. And then I was out of commission
- 1:04Speaker 1: for about a week. Yeah, I got sick. You got sick. Yeah,
- 1:08Speaker 1: it's been kind of a weird August. It was. I'm
- 1:11Speaker 1: so ready for August to be over. And officially mercury
- 1:14Speaker 1: Is has stationed direct. We are out of retro rade.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Thank you goddesses, thank you planets. I learned a lot
- 1:21Speaker 1: in this retrograde. In this recent retrograde. We're on the
- 1:25Speaker 1: tail end. I mean there's like some weird stuff still
- 1:27Speaker 1: going on, right, you know, yeah, like in our lives,
- 1:32Speaker 1: in our personal lives, good stuff, lots of good stuff,
- 1:34Speaker 1: good stuff, more good stuff than weird stuff and weird
- 1:37Speaker 1: stuff always, you know. Yes, Okay, So we have an announcement.
- 1:41Speaker 1: So as y'all know, we had to reschedule our meet up,
- 1:45Speaker 1: our Vienna party. Unfortunately, I was very ill. I had
- 1:49Speaker 1: I actually lost my voice, could not speak, could not
- 1:52Speaker 1: eat for about a week. It was her instruments the worst. Literally,
- 1:55Speaker 1: I told mom, I was like, I feel like Beyonce
- 1:57Speaker 1: and carry like I have to be on vocal us,
- 2:00Speaker 1: vocal rest, do not talk to her right right. And
- 2:03Speaker 1: then the last thing I wanted was for our locomotives,
- 2:06Speaker 1: our Fly Fly Local motives to come to our meet
- 2:09Speaker 1: up and then get sick right and then get their
- 2:12Speaker 1: family six. So I was like, no, Mala, we have
- 2:15Speaker 1: to reschedule. And I was so heartbroken to have to
- 2:17Speaker 1: do that, but you know, yeah, she wasn't quarantined, but
- 2:20Speaker 1: literally we've rescheduled all that. To say that we have rescheduled,
- 2:24Speaker 1: so new date Saturday, August. That is just a week
- 2:28Speaker 1: away a few days from now by the time y'all
- 2:29Speaker 1: are listening, so it'll still be a delicious pizza time change.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It's actually from two to four pm and d J.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Sizzle will be joining us. She'll be spinning and we're
- 2:38Speaker 1: super super excited. So if you weren't able to make it, um,
- 2:41Speaker 1: if that day didn't work for you, is what I mean.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Hopefully that y'all can make it to come on the party,
- 2:48Speaker 1: Pina Party, Come show your pianna, where your little dresses,
- 2:53Speaker 1: your little shorts, whatever makes you comfortable, whatever you want. Um,
- 2:58Speaker 1: there's pizza there. We're not buying food for people, but
- 3:03Speaker 1: there is food. They're right, it is a meet up
- 3:05Speaker 1: and there's like they have some wine options, some beer options,
- 3:09Speaker 1: some beer options. So it's gonna be cute. So come through.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Someone um actually asked on the Instagram if they could
- 3:16Speaker 1: take their baby, and absolutely, you can take your child,
- 3:18Speaker 1: bring your children. It is like, this is a pizza place,
- 3:21Speaker 1: it's an all ages events. So this is a perfect opportunity.
- 3:24Speaker 1: If you cannot come to like any of our live
- 3:26Speaker 1: shows because you need to hire a babysitter or whatever
- 3:31Speaker 1: it is. You know, things happen, So yeah, this is
- 3:34Speaker 1: a good this is a really great event. And at
- 3:36Speaker 1: the same so actually that day we also will be
- 3:38Speaker 1: hosting our last show at Levin Pavilion. UM. It will
- 3:43Speaker 1: be we're so excited for this one. This is I
- 3:45Speaker 1: mean all of them, but this one in particular because
- 3:47Speaker 1: we actually saw them last year here at the special
- 3:50Speaker 1: and we didn't see them like it was just a
- 3:52Speaker 1: few of them. It wasn't the full ensemble, but in
- 3:56Speaker 1: all women's Maniatchi group will be at Levin I'm MacArthur
- 3:59Speaker 1: Park next Saturday, and that's at seven pm. So we're
- 4:03Speaker 1: going to have our meetup and then we're gonna take
- 4:04Speaker 1: a little rest and then we're going to go to
- 4:06Speaker 1: to host UM Florida the flor Show. So we're super excited.
- 4:12Speaker 1: We like really hope that people come with us. Yes,
- 4:16Speaker 1: you know, leave the meet up and let's go see
- 4:18Speaker 1: the ladies sing. They're incredible. They're so good, so effing good, magical.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I believe they just won a Grammy, like the Latin
- 4:27Speaker 1: Grammy or something. I believe it they won like some
- 4:30Speaker 1: music award. One of the Mohennes in Florida is Miguel's cousin.
- 4:36Speaker 1: For their first cousins like Miguel, the singer who I love. Right,
- 4:41Speaker 1: he's from Santa Monica, right, My, Actually I went to
- 4:44Speaker 1: middle school with one of his cousins. And it's so
- 4:47Speaker 1: funny because this is words side charged. But let me
- 4:49Speaker 1: just share this real quick, because I remember this boy
- 4:52Speaker 1: that I went to school with. I went to middle
- 4:53Speaker 1: school with, and he was like all about his cousin,
- 4:58Speaker 1: the singer Miguel. He would always talk about his cousin
- 5:01Speaker 1: like he was like, my cousin is going to make it,
- 5:03Speaker 1: Like my cousin is going to be super big, like
- 5:05Speaker 1: listen to my cousin's demo, listened to like all about
- 5:08Speaker 1: his cousin. Turns out it ends up being sucking Miguel,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and he did make it, and he did make it,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and so um. So you know that Miguel is also Mexican,
- 5:16Speaker 1: so on his Mexican side, like that is the cousin. Yeah, wow,
- 5:22Speaker 1: how cute. He's an l a boy, like he's like
- 5:24Speaker 1: a local boy, which is also why I love him
- 5:26Speaker 1: so much because he did make it. We love let
- 5:31Speaker 1: me tell you anyway. Anyway. Anyways, Okay, so also we
- 5:36Speaker 1: wanted to announce that we are also for we are
- 5:39Speaker 1: booking for fall and winter. Seen, We're open to booking.
- 5:43Speaker 1: We're open to booking. Book us. Last year or last
- 5:46Speaker 1: school year, we were at University of Oregon. We did
- 5:49Speaker 1: pit sir, we did ucsp A USC A bunch of times. Yes,
- 5:54Speaker 1: shout out USC. Yes we love our Trojan look I
- 5:57Speaker 1: motives Yes, and our Oregon look a motive. All of you,
- 6:00Speaker 1: all of you all. We love all of y'all. So
- 6:02Speaker 1: fly us out. We will travel. We will travel. UM.
- 6:05Speaker 1: If you're so, if you are part of a student organization,
- 6:10Speaker 1: or if you team up with the cultural center at
- 6:12Speaker 1: your school or professor, if there's a conference, yes, UM,
- 6:16Speaker 1: reach out to us. We can talk about all of
- 6:19Speaker 1: that and figure it out. Basically, any of ours we
- 6:23Speaker 1: can turn into a workshop. We have turned them into workshops.
- 6:26Speaker 1: One of my faves thus far has been the Goddess
- 6:28Speaker 1: worship one that we did an Oregon, very fun. And
- 6:31Speaker 1: then the Multidimensional ho that we did at USC. Yes, UM,
- 6:35Speaker 1: that was really great. I also like our latinox tech
- 6:39Speaker 1: is also we can literally come and teach you how
- 6:41Speaker 1: to create a podcast. We can teach you how to
- 6:43Speaker 1: do a podcast. We have done that. We specifically have
- 6:46Speaker 1: created that workshop for youth. So if you work with youth, um,
- 6:52Speaker 1: even like a high school, like if you want to
- 6:55Speaker 1: take us to a local high schools until even a
- 6:57Speaker 1: local high school. You know all of that. It's like
- 6:59Speaker 1: a women's history month, Latino History month, you know whatever
- 7:03Speaker 1: it is, even things that have to do with Um,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore, but yeah,
- 7:09Speaker 1: bring us out. Email us. Look, I thought our radio
- 7:11Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. We do it all. We do everything,
- 7:14Speaker 1: We do everything. Um yeah, okay, book us. Anyways. Also,
- 7:20Speaker 1: we've been working on things right, as I mentioned, we
- 7:22Speaker 1: took some time off because we have been working on
- 7:26Speaker 1: stuff behind the scenes, so we cannot share too much.
- 7:29Speaker 1: But we are launching a new project, very cute, exciting
- 7:33Speaker 1: new project that we're so excited about. Oh my god,
- 7:36Speaker 1: you are all gonna die. You're gonna love it. I
- 7:38Speaker 1: know it. Okay, that's enough, you're gonna love it. Say
- 7:43Speaker 1: no more. Um. Yeah, So we have been you know,
- 7:47Speaker 1: Mama likes to say that even when we're not podcasting,
- 7:49Speaker 1: we're podcasting, and that is honestly, very very true. Um,
- 7:54Speaker 1: we're podcasting. Last night at MacArthur Park, we were, we
- 7:58Speaker 1: were It was a lot of fun. Yeah, can I
- 8:03Speaker 1: sure about my pants to leave? Oh my god? So
- 8:07Speaker 1: last night we go out, right, Oh my god, my
- 8:09Speaker 1: poor mother. She wasn't here, she wasn't involved. I just
- 8:11Speaker 1: didn't whenever I do things, I'm like my poor mother.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So right, so we go out. I got sick. The
- 8:18Speaker 1: aside took me home. I don't remember much, but I
- 8:21Speaker 1: had like this, this the will and the strength of
- 8:24Speaker 1: mind to like go into my grandmother's house and get
- 8:27Speaker 1: my dog, get get pop us, go in the backyard,
- 8:31Speaker 1: and then go up to my apartment. So when I
- 8:32Speaker 1: wake up this morning, I'm like, thes like, what happened?
- 8:35Speaker 1: How did I get home? Like? What's up? I did
- 8:37Speaker 1: not order an uber last night, So so we figured
- 8:39Speaker 1: it out. I had to come here to come record.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So I'm leaving my apartment and I'm up on the
- 8:45Speaker 1: second story. I have a little bout, like you know,
- 8:49Speaker 1: my walkway, and I looked down and the pants that
- 8:53Speaker 1: I was wearing last night were like in a little pile,
- 8:56Speaker 1: like on this table like down below. There's one of
- 9:00Speaker 1: two things could have happened, and I know which one
- 9:03Speaker 1: it was. So either I got up to my apartment
- 9:08Speaker 1: and up from the balcony. I took up my pants
- 9:10Speaker 1: and I threw them across the yard and they landed
- 9:13Speaker 1: perfectly in a little pile on the corner of the table.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Or I took off my pants downstairs and then opened
- 9:21Speaker 1: the gate and walked up the stairs and walked past
- 9:23Speaker 1: my neighbor's window and front door, and then in my
- 9:27Speaker 1: thonge specifically important and then opened the I'm thinking that
- 9:33Speaker 1: that's what happened. I think it's the second one. So
- 9:36Speaker 1: I don't have evidence to really support either theory. And
- 9:39Speaker 1: you know, I think that was also partially my responsibility.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I didn't walk you into your apartment. But it's okay,
- 9:45Speaker 1: I made it in one piece, right, So anyways, what
- 9:50Speaker 1: else are we talking about today? Anyway? That was fun.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Point is I don't even know how we got We
- 9:55Speaker 1: got here baby around the car park. Oh, we were
- 9:57Speaker 1: at MacArthur Park, and then I ended up doing have
- 10:00Speaker 1: panciless in my bank. At least you were in your backyard.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I was in my backyard. Yes, anyway, Okay, so we're
- 10:09Speaker 1: moving on to our next second, next segment, O god
- 10:12Speaker 1: models going to kill us up, all right, all right,
- 10:15Speaker 1: So we have a few questions for all your look
- 10:19Speaker 1: us and listener questions submitted via Instagram. So this question
- 10:24Speaker 1: is do you ever deal with imposter syndrome? Yes? Okay,
- 10:28Speaker 1: next question. Yeah, I'm an impostor impostor syndrome all the time,
- 10:38Speaker 1: all time, all the time. I think that like my
- 10:41Speaker 1: impostor syndrome kicks in my impostor syndrome. Honestly, I think
- 10:49Speaker 1: kicks in a lot when it comes to romantic staff.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I was gonna when it come say dating, I'm I'm
- 10:55Speaker 1: thinking about podcasting work now check check, check, We're good,
- 10:58Speaker 1: We're good, we're chilling, we're good, We're good when it
- 11:00Speaker 1: comes to dating. Same. You totally took that out of
- 11:03Speaker 1: my mouth. Don't feel good for it. I don't feel
- 11:05Speaker 1: good enough. I don't feel like I'm actually like, I'm
- 11:08Speaker 1: like I shouldn't be dating. I shouldn't be dating, like
- 11:10Speaker 1: I shouldn't you know what I mean? What is your iteration? UM?
- 11:15Speaker 1: I was going to say, um something similar. I think
- 11:19Speaker 1: that I have recently with my therapists have been like
- 11:22Speaker 1: unpacking my self, saboteur my inner self, belts for um.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And I think that it's very much tied to imposter
- 11:29Speaker 1: syndrome or it's like I've had these very tumultuous relationships,
- 11:34Speaker 1: um mutually unhealthy. So now that I'm in like the
- 11:39Speaker 1: healthy relationship I've been thus far, I catch myself like
- 11:43Speaker 1: sometimes wanting to function up because I'm like so almost
- 11:48Speaker 1: like you're waiting for the other shooter drop right, Like
- 11:50Speaker 1: you're like, Okay, why is this going so well exactly?
- 11:55Speaker 1: And why are you do treat me this way in
- 11:58Speaker 1: a good way? Right, And like I don't understand. I'm
- 12:03Speaker 1: just like, what's going to happen? Definite impostor syndrome when
- 12:06Speaker 1: it's comes into dating. But I feel like, um, because
- 12:10Speaker 1: our listeners do so many amazing things, I feel like
- 12:13Speaker 1: this question might be about school or about work and
- 12:16Speaker 1: not so much relationships. So I just want to say,
- 12:19Speaker 1: like remember that, like there is no one like you,
- 12:22Speaker 1: no one, and what you bring to the table like
- 12:26Speaker 1: is completely unique. So whether that be for school, for work,
- 12:29Speaker 1: in a relationship, in your friendships, your family, Like you
- 12:34Speaker 1: are like the expert at you of being you, you
- 12:36Speaker 1: know what I mean. So it's like who I don't know,
- 12:39Speaker 1: like honing on that power like trust, that trust, that
- 12:42Speaker 1: inner strength, that inner goddess, that inner fierceness. Yeah, you
- 12:46Speaker 1: know what I mean, And of course that's easier said
- 12:48Speaker 1: than done. Yeah, And what I like to have this
- 12:50Speaker 1: conversation too with my friends, and especially when I do
- 12:55Speaker 1: like self defense workshops and stuff when I like to
- 12:57Speaker 1: talk to girls about is the fact that, like, if
- 13:00Speaker 1: you look at people who are considered like super intelligent
- 13:04Speaker 1: or accomplished and like the people that we are all
- 13:06Speaker 1: supposed to look up to as like examples of hard work,
- 13:10Speaker 1: and we could name any like whether it's a Steve
- 13:13Speaker 1: Jobs or this or that whoever you know, figures um,
- 13:16Speaker 1: the people that we consider actual we base our standards
- 13:20Speaker 1: of intelligence off of those people have all kinds of
- 13:24Speaker 1: fucked up ship going on in their fucking lives, like
- 13:26Speaker 1: their messes. Like if there's one thing that the Me
- 13:29Speaker 1: too in Times of Movement have shown me with all
- 13:32Speaker 1: of the disclosures of sexual violence going on in Hollywood,
- 13:35Speaker 1: with these major producers and artists and geniuses and actors
- 13:38Speaker 1: in this and that and journalists forget Matt Lauer, all
- 13:41Speaker 1: these fools who are supposedly the gold standard, who are
- 13:44Speaker 1: so great and geniuses, they're not effing geniuses there. They've
- 13:48Speaker 1: had access to things, They've been able to go to
- 13:50Speaker 1: the best schools, they've been supported their whole lives. Honestly,
- 13:53Speaker 1: they're not that fucking intelligent and they're not that creative.
- 13:57Speaker 1: They're not more creative than you, and they're pieces of ship.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Like you know, so when we think about I'm an
- 14:02Speaker 1: impostor compared to who, who's the real effing impostor here?
- 14:06Speaker 1: Like if you got into your school, if you're taking
- 14:08Speaker 1: your classes like you're supposed to be there, You're supposed
- 14:11Speaker 1: to be there, and you know, like, I actually think
- 14:14Speaker 1: that we are better than a lot of people in
- 14:18Speaker 1: many ways who were supposedly supposed to look up to.
- 14:20Speaker 1: You know what I mean? That would be my concert home,
- 14:23Speaker 1: like all about imposter syndrome. Yeah, yeah, that's those guys.
- 14:27Speaker 1: You're great, right, absolutely, and I think that they're Um,
- 14:30Speaker 1: I want to recommend our Friends of Cheeseman. They actually
- 14:34Speaker 1: have a an episode specifically about imposter syndrome that maybe
- 14:39Speaker 1: you'll want to check out because they unpacked this and
- 14:43Speaker 1: what it's like for folks of color and when you
- 14:45Speaker 1: like um tying like sexuality and gender and class and
- 14:50Speaker 1: all of these different things. You know, we definitely can
- 14:52Speaker 1: feel like we're not deserving of having great things there's
- 14:55Speaker 1: so much to talk about, and you know, there's like
- 14:57Speaker 1: these ongoing jokes and like comedians will make jokes about it.
- 15:00Speaker 1: I'll see it on Twitter. But it's like when you
- 15:03Speaker 1: are doing something really cool in your community and then
- 15:06Speaker 1: people your family will like make fun of you about it, right,
- 15:12Speaker 1: you know she's real And then so I think we
- 15:15Speaker 1: also come from that being humbled constantly, right right, right?
- 15:21Speaker 1: And I yeah, definitely, because I feel like the only
- 15:23Speaker 1: one that really gets what I do is my mother
- 15:26Speaker 1: and my my Buddymo because he lives with me, so
- 15:28Speaker 1: he's like they literally see me leaving all the time
- 15:31Speaker 1: to do stuff for the podcast, as opposed to a
- 15:33Speaker 1: family that doesn't live with me or it doesn't see
- 15:35Speaker 1: me constantly and obviously don't listen. It's just like, oh, yeah,
- 15:38Speaker 1: she's she's hosting a party, she's going she's going to
- 15:42Speaker 1: a party. Party, She's yeah, she's going to a party. Right.
- 15:46Speaker 1: They don't see the process, right, right, right, So the
- 15:48Speaker 1: impostor syndrome, I think, well, it's kind of like it's
- 15:51Speaker 1: kind of like our families feel like they know the
- 15:53Speaker 1: true us, the one true Us, so it won't be
- 15:56Speaker 1: DV outside of it They're like, Nope, you're not. That's
- 15:58Speaker 1: not you. You are a suster well away anyway, next
- 16:06Speaker 1: next question, Okay, what boundaries do you set for work
- 16:11Speaker 1: life balance? What is the next career move? I had
- 16:15Speaker 1: a career move recently. I am no longer working full
- 16:19Speaker 1: time as a rape crisis counselor advocate. I'm a teacher now,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and I will not say much more about it because
- 16:26Speaker 1: we are work life value. This is the answer. I'm
- 16:30Speaker 1: a teacher, but I'm not going to be sharing really
- 16:32Speaker 1: because previously I would share a lot like about my
- 16:35Speaker 1: work because it was so relevant to the podcast. I'm
- 16:37Speaker 1: still going to volunteer on the crisis hotline. Um, but
- 16:41Speaker 1: my my full time gig now I'm teaching mostly like
- 16:43Speaker 1: sex said type stuff, so it's it's fun times, but
- 16:46Speaker 1: I do more and more. Like I set my individual
- 16:50Speaker 1: Instagram to private, I set my individual Twitter to private, Like,
- 16:54Speaker 1: I'm really thinking of getting rid of the Twitter. Honestly,
- 16:56Speaker 1: I've been on it for six years and I'm kind
- 16:58Speaker 1: of tired of the app. I'm tired. I'm tired of
- 17:01Speaker 1: Twitter dot com. So I'm trying to like set those
- 17:05Speaker 1: boundaries for myself. UM, let's see for me, I don't
- 17:11Speaker 1: think I necessarily have boundaries like I don't have thus far.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I don't have like podcast boundaries. Um, Like I'm constantly
- 17:20Speaker 1: I feel like I'm constantly um thinking about stuff for
- 17:23Speaker 1: the podcast and I and I'll text Mole. I was like, well,
- 17:26Speaker 1: we're I feel like we're almost like we're podcast. Obviously
- 17:29Speaker 1: that's like a that's a very like that's a hyperbole, hyperbolic,
- 17:34Speaker 1: but it's like it's right. But it's like, well, sure
- 17:38Speaker 1: I'm not putting in eight hours straight, you know, but
- 17:41Speaker 1: I am like putting in thirty minutes here and then
- 17:43Speaker 1: thirty minutes there and there, and then a twenty minute
- 17:46Speaker 1: phone call with you and vice for you know what,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and so on and so forth almost every day. Right,
- 17:51Speaker 1: So I don't necessarily have that boundary yet. But um,
- 17:54Speaker 1: for work, I mean I had I work a nine
- 17:56Speaker 1: to five, so I that's that's my boundary. I get
- 17:59Speaker 1: to clock in, I get to clock out. Um for
- 18:01Speaker 1: the most part, I don't work weekends. I don't really
- 18:03Speaker 1: work late. Um, so that is my that is my balance. Um.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And then my next career move, um, I am plotting
- 18:11Speaker 1: on it. We'll see. This has been a really good
- 18:14Speaker 1: like transition job and a really good like just to
- 18:16Speaker 1: feel things out, um what my next move might be.
- 18:19Speaker 1: But I don't know. We have we have things in
- 18:22Speaker 1: the work. I really do believe that, Like well, each
- 18:25Speaker 1: year of the podcast has been a momentous year with
- 18:29Speaker 1: lots of things going on, and there is this this
- 18:32Speaker 1: coming year. I just know there's going to be all
- 18:35Speaker 1: kinds of stuff coming our way. And who knows what
- 18:37Speaker 1: we're going to be talking about this time next year,
- 18:40Speaker 1: right right? Yes, all right, So we have any other
- 18:50Speaker 1: else's um no, So we're going to get into our
- 18:56Speaker 1: song break now. Um. We have a guest for the
- 18:59Speaker 1: second half of the in for the second half of
- 19:01Speaker 1: this law so or Cara, Belly Rosa and and and
- 19:10Speaker 1: and and and and and and and and and and
- 19:15Speaker 1: and and and and and and and and Belly rack
- 19:25Speaker 1: and and and send Delly rang and and and send
- 19:31Speaker 1: Bell rang and and and ummm from from from from
- 19:43Speaker 1: M M of it and Little ship M welcome back.
- 19:52Speaker 1: So we're super excited to have this guest on the show.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Her name is Andrea, and I'm gonna let her introduce herself.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Hey girl, welcome, Hi, I hope for everyone. I am
- 20:02Speaker 1: Andrea and I create videos on YouTube about disability and
- 20:08Speaker 1: disabled awareness and education. I am disabled myself, I have spina,
- 20:14Speaker 1: and then with my education. I like to throw in
- 20:18Speaker 1: the intersection of being a Latina because they intersect, um,
- 20:24Speaker 1: and I can't really get around it because it's both
- 20:25Speaker 1: my identities and what kind of Latina are you? We
- 20:28Speaker 1: were talking about this before we started recording. This is
- 20:30Speaker 1: important supposed to ask people. You're not supposed to ask
- 20:34Speaker 1: people why they're why I am Cuban and Puerto Rican.
- 20:40Speaker 1: My dad's from Puerto Rico, my mom's from Cuba. So
- 20:43Speaker 1: I generally tell people I'm a Cuba Rican. And the
- 20:48Speaker 1: only frustrating thing I have about it, there's two things. Um,
- 20:51Speaker 1: there's never merchandise that mixes look flats, so I always
- 20:56Speaker 1: have to buy individual things, and so it sucks because
- 20:59Speaker 1: I want to wear like a body question. But then
- 21:02Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm Cuban. Two I need them to know
- 21:05Speaker 1: him right or things like that, or people who are
- 21:09Speaker 1: familiar with Cuban Puerto Rico. Apparently that the islands don't
- 21:13Speaker 1: get along. Um. So they asked me if my parents
- 21:17Speaker 1: still love each other, if they're still married. Oh my god,
- 21:20Speaker 1: I'm like I didn't know this as a kid, so
- 21:23Speaker 1: I was like, what are you guys talking about? But
- 21:25Speaker 1: it was. It was a big thing. And I learned
- 21:27Speaker 1: later that my parents had like a lot of issues
- 21:30Speaker 1: for a while with my dad's family for my dad
- 21:32Speaker 1: marrying my mom. But like now everyone's kind of fine,
- 21:37Speaker 1: especially because my dad, I guess, fulfilled his duty and
- 21:41Speaker 1: had like six kids, but he had no sons, and
- 21:44Speaker 1: so we gave him a boy dog. So okay, here's
- 21:48Speaker 1: your boy, here's your boy child. He kept thinking, he
- 21:52Speaker 1: was like every kid he kept getting. He was like,
- 21:53Speaker 1: this will be the one. And then we're all like, no, Dad,
- 21:56Speaker 1: we're better. And you you are also online and you
- 22:02Speaker 1: are a content creator as well. Right when we were
- 22:04Speaker 1: talking about that too, Yeah, you want to talk a
- 22:07Speaker 1: little bit about like your your videos and like what
- 22:10Speaker 1: you discuss and your mediums and all that good stuff. Yeah. So, um,
- 22:14Speaker 1: the main video I do every week. It comes out
- 22:17Speaker 1: on Mondays on my channel UM. I call it hashteck spinnipifida,
- 22:22Speaker 1: and I started that because while I have a physical disability,
- 22:27Speaker 1: it's invisible most of the time unless people really focus
- 22:30Speaker 1: on my walk or if I use a cane. UM.
- 22:33Speaker 1: But growing up, my parents were always just like, yeah,
- 22:36Speaker 1: you're disabled, Like it wasn't really a bad thing. It
- 22:39Speaker 1: was just as a matter of fact, because everyone likes
- 22:43Speaker 1: to use these weird um I forgot those like pseudonyms
- 22:48Speaker 1: or whatever of saying like you're differently abled or stuff,
- 22:52Speaker 1: and that's I don't know, I don't. Some disabled people
- 22:56Speaker 1: use it, and that's fine because the community itself we
- 22:58Speaker 1: can identify how we but able people meaning someone that
- 23:03Speaker 1: doesn't have any mental illnesses physical disabilities. Those are able
- 23:08Speaker 1: people and um, not to be confused with able body.
- 23:12Speaker 1: A lot of people say able bodied, but there are
- 23:15Speaker 1: disabled people who are able bodied. They could have a
- 23:18Speaker 1: mental illness, um, but they're still able body. And so
- 23:21Speaker 1: when you do that, you like exclude other people in
- 23:24Speaker 1: the disabled community. But I like disabled because it says
- 23:30Speaker 1: what it is, I can't do stuff, and that's and
- 23:32Speaker 1: everyone can't do things, um right and disabilities of culture.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And so my parents just kind of like, let me
- 23:40Speaker 1: be happy with my label. But growing up we would
- 23:44Speaker 1: get like aggressions from people outside. Um. I've had a
- 23:49Speaker 1: disabled placard that I carry with me and I will
- 23:52Speaker 1: use it on days where I am having just trouble
- 23:54Speaker 1: walking far distances. And because of that people My sister
- 24:00Speaker 1: and I would use it a lot because we lived
- 24:02Speaker 1: with her while I was in college and she would
- 24:06Speaker 1: park in it to pick me up from class, and
- 24:09Speaker 1: we would get harassed by elderly people, by a police
- 24:13Speaker 1: officer and because I didn't look disabled enough to them.
- 24:17Speaker 1: And that's just the issue that everyone thinks it looks
- 24:19Speaker 1: like that sign, and I'm like, disability doesn't look like
- 24:22Speaker 1: that sign. Um that element attached, right, yeah, And that
- 24:28Speaker 1: sign is like it's good and bad. It gives everyone
- 24:32Speaker 1: and they know what that's for, but it adds a
- 24:36Speaker 1: lot of problems because it's a wheelchair sign and there's
- 24:40Speaker 1: the diversity of that. But also it gets people confused
- 24:43Speaker 1: about wheelchair users. Everyone thinks, you will chair users are
- 24:46Speaker 1: bound to their chairs, and majority of the time they're not.
- 24:49Speaker 1: They can get up and stuff, and that's when you
- 24:51Speaker 1: get those like shitty, am I will to curse? Yeah? Absolutely.
- 24:55Speaker 1: And the word that you used again before we started recording,
- 24:58Speaker 1: the word that you that you used to just scribe
- 25:01Speaker 1: um like a cane or a wheelchair was mobility aid. Okay,
- 25:05Speaker 1: so so right because it's an aid. Yeah, so it
- 25:08Speaker 1: can be used in any number of ways. Yeah, and
- 25:10Speaker 1: like a lot of things can be an aid. If
- 25:12Speaker 1: it's helping better your life, it's an aid. Um. I
- 25:16Speaker 1: use uh text to talk a lot on my phone,
- 25:21Speaker 1: especially when I'm walking, because when I'm I have no balance.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Uh We've talked about this a lot. I have nerve
- 25:27Speaker 1: damage on my feet, so I don't have balance, and
- 25:29Speaker 1: I look the way. My brain compensated for that because
- 25:32Speaker 1: I lost feeling from one of my back surgeries. They
- 25:35Speaker 1: took out nerves and I just lost feeling at my feet,
- 25:38Speaker 1: so I looked down a lot. And Um, when I'm walking,
- 25:41Speaker 1: I have to focus. And so when people text me,
- 25:44Speaker 1: I'll use my headphones and I'll text to talk And
- 25:48Speaker 1: I consider that as like an accessibility tools because it's
- 25:52Speaker 1: helping me still stay stay safe because l A drivers,
- 25:55Speaker 1: oh my god, moving out here, they don't. The only
- 25:58Speaker 1: time I don't care is when I'm in Sandem Monica
- 26:00Speaker 1: seeing my doctors because it's rich white people and I
- 26:02Speaker 1: want to get hit hit me. I have. I have
- 26:06Speaker 1: student laws and they like they're old, they're going to
- 26:09Speaker 1: die soon. Give me money. But but it's just going
- 26:15Speaker 1: through all that, Like I got harassed a lot by
- 26:17Speaker 1: police officers, and looking back now, it's scary. I I'm
- 26:22Speaker 1: very I'm white passing. I'm a white Latina from my
- 26:24Speaker 1: mom's side. My dad has Diana blood, but I look
- 26:27Speaker 1: like my mom's I have skin, so I'm privileged in that.
- 26:31Speaker 1: But my sister got my dad's skin, so she is
- 26:34Speaker 1: like your color. And so that's scary thinking about that
- 26:37Speaker 1: we would get stopped by cops. And the mention of
- 26:40Speaker 1: street harassment and the harassment from the police and from
- 26:44Speaker 1: other people. You were talking about how there is a
- 26:47Speaker 1: very specific intersection of like disability and street harassment, and
- 26:51Speaker 1: that's so interesting to me. How even like the carcetral
- 26:54Speaker 1: state becomes like the FED through the police become involved
- 26:59Speaker 1: in that. You talk a little bit more about that
- 27:01Speaker 1: intersection of the street harassment. Yeah, well, I mean there's many.
- 27:05Speaker 1: So I'll have to for those situations, I have to
- 27:08Speaker 1: prove that I can park there. They just have to
- 27:10Speaker 1: run my I d But they like it doesn't stop
- 27:13Speaker 1: them from making side comments. They're like, well, you look
- 27:15Speaker 1: so healthy and all these things, and I'm like, okay,
- 27:19Speaker 1: that happens at the doctor's office. I go to the
- 27:21Speaker 1: urologist a lot and it's just feel old people that
- 27:24Speaker 1: their bladders don't work. I didn't have to get old
- 27:26Speaker 1: to have like a shitty bladder. And I just look
- 27:29Speaker 1: at them, like Helen, because they look at me, and
- 27:31Speaker 1: I can tell that they are like, why is she here?
- 27:34Speaker 1: Like they're trying to figure out what's wrong. I'm like, Helen,
- 27:36Speaker 1: I'm just trying to get my bladder looked at like
- 27:38Speaker 1: you're going to die. I'm just trying not to right.
- 27:43Speaker 1: But the other the other street harassment, um is this
- 27:48Speaker 1: one with like the Kane yes, what happened Kane Yes?
- 27:51Speaker 1: And what happened? Okay? So okay, So earlier today, earlier today,
- 27:56Speaker 1: I was turning the corner coming to a spa and
- 27:58Speaker 1: I was recording a video to my Instagram stories. So
- 28:01Speaker 1: I was like la la la, you know, and I
- 28:03Speaker 1: and I'm still recovering from last night. You know, I'm
- 28:07Speaker 1: like not all here, so, you know, So I'm walking
- 28:10Speaker 1: around the corner and I see a mariachi sitting on
- 28:14Speaker 1: a bench and a young lady sitting next to him
- 28:17Speaker 1: and they're like talking. They're like talking or he's talking,
- 28:19Speaker 1: and I'm not really painted, I don't know, So I
- 28:22Speaker 1: was like, maybe that's his niece or his daughter or something,
- 28:24Speaker 1: because you do look very young, and she's very that's
- 28:28Speaker 1: living my dad, jeez, that's the thing, you know, is
- 28:30Speaker 1: very petite. And so I'm walking by and she goes
- 28:33Speaker 1: my lad and she looks at me, and I'm like, oh, hey,
- 28:36Speaker 1: Like but I didn't know what was going on, so
- 28:37Speaker 1: I kind of kept walking for this. I kept with them.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I like kept looking back and I stopped in the
- 28:43Speaker 1: doorway and I'm like, I kept looking at my eyes
- 28:45Speaker 1: were wide. I was like, yeah, not so yeah. So
- 28:50Speaker 1: then I stopped in the doorway and I was like,
- 28:52Speaker 1: is everything good? And I was like yeah, And then
- 28:57Speaker 1: he had he pulled up because then I was just
- 29:00Speaker 1: going to already and beligne it to you. So he
- 29:03Speaker 1: put his hand out to shake his hand, and like God,
- 29:07Speaker 1: but I'm like torn because at the same time, I'm
- 29:08Speaker 1: like I don't want to don't feel like gross. But
- 29:11Speaker 1: also my dad, my dad's a marine and raised me
- 29:14Speaker 1: that I need to like handshake, and he had a
- 29:17Speaker 1: ship handshake because my dad has had a ship. That's
- 29:20Speaker 1: that's the thing too. My dad, I think because he
- 29:23Speaker 1: overcompensated that he had no boys, he made sure that
- 29:27Speaker 1: all the things he would want to teach a boy.
- 29:29Speaker 1: He taught to my sisters and I, which is like
- 29:31Speaker 1: that thing he should teach any I know, good thing
- 29:34Speaker 1: to teach a kid, like when he would give us handshake.
- 29:36Speaker 1: When he would teach us how to give a handshake,
- 29:38Speaker 1: he was like, you have to do with the marine way,
- 29:40Speaker 1: So you have to like it's like a power show.
- 29:42Speaker 1: You have to squeeze. And I do that with everyone.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I love it though, because like men don't think women
- 29:48Speaker 1: will do that, And they go to give like such
- 29:51Speaker 1: a like half ash shake and I squeeze their hand
- 29:53Speaker 1: and I'm like, yeah, I'm the fucking authoritive. Sometimes I
- 29:57Speaker 1: like to invert it though, and I'd like to make
- 30:01Speaker 1: all the time. Mama will do like the hi like
- 30:06Speaker 1: she's like expecting you to kiss her hand. That's literally
- 30:09Speaker 1: what she does a constantly think. I like laughed at me.
- 30:12Speaker 1: She's like, Zoey, what the is that? Anyway? I'm but
- 30:19Speaker 1: the with with the guy. He so before Mama got there,
- 30:24Speaker 1: he I was sitting on the bench because they weren't
- 30:26Speaker 1: here yet, and I got here really early, um and
- 30:29Speaker 1: I saw him walk by and I was like, God,
- 30:32Speaker 1: damn it, he is going to say something to me later.
- 30:36Speaker 1: You always know because he because he walked by and
- 30:39Speaker 1: he got like, I'm not good with math. He got
- 30:42Speaker 1: a good distance and he stopped and looked back and
- 30:45Speaker 1: then kept going. And that's when I was like, and
- 30:48Speaker 1: so I was instagramming my friends being like this is
- 30:50Speaker 1: going to happen. And then he came back. He started
- 30:54Speaker 1: talking to me, and then he just was saying I
- 30:58Speaker 1: was really pretty, and then I was just like, okay,
- 31:00Speaker 1: thank you. And he's much older. Yeah, he was like
- 31:05Speaker 1: it was no even if even if like he wanted
- 31:08Speaker 1: to pay my student loans, it's enough. I never understand.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I really never understand. I truly don't get it when
- 31:15Speaker 1: like older and I'm sorry, ugly guys like old men,
- 31:19Speaker 1: Like what do I call them? All these grossos out
- 31:22Speaker 1: here and they're just there. I know, there's such grossos
- 31:27Speaker 1: and they're so old and ugly, and like I'm like,
- 31:30Speaker 1: why do you how where did you get where did
- 31:31Speaker 1: you get the confidence to approach me? Well, it's why
- 31:35Speaker 1: do you think that it's okay? Why do you think
- 31:38Speaker 1: that it's okay to speak to me? I don't get
- 31:39Speaker 1: it because like I he asked, like what I did,
- 31:43Speaker 1: and then I didn't know I was. You get so
- 31:48Speaker 1: like not flustered, the confused because you're processing that this
- 31:51Speaker 1: guy is just talking to you and so and I
- 31:54Speaker 1: have That's the thing I need to work on. I
- 31:57Speaker 1: really hate lying to everybody and I know and like,
- 32:02Speaker 1: I mean, I was glad, I just don't like, oh,
- 32:05Speaker 1: I work with computers, and then he was It's not
- 32:08Speaker 1: a full lie, but it was like enough where he
- 32:12Speaker 1: was just like, oh, but I bet your talents like
- 32:14Speaker 1: being beautiful. Sometimes I like to tell men that I
- 32:17Speaker 1: like work at as like a mortician or something that
- 32:19Speaker 1: I work in a mortuary, Like what is the most
- 32:22Speaker 1: like horrific? You know what I mean. But back to
- 32:26Speaker 1: the mariachi on the street, he you also brought up.
- 32:30Speaker 1: That's where the mobility aid conversation also came to play. Yeah,
- 32:34Speaker 1: he um. So it's a lot of for me. I've
- 32:37Speaker 1: been using my aid for like a little bit over
- 32:40Speaker 1: a year. And that was a big confidence thing too,
- 32:43Speaker 1: because there's so much able is um and internalized able
- 32:47Speaker 1: ism where I don't want. I have the privilege that
- 32:50Speaker 1: I can hide my disability so I can decide if
- 32:54Speaker 1: it's safe for people to know. But with AID. It
- 32:56Speaker 1: makes me more visible to people. Um and like there's
- 33:01Speaker 1: a lot of stuff like I got my AID because
- 33:02Speaker 1: my ex and I were talking about it and he
- 33:04Speaker 1: was like you need it and like I want you
- 33:06Speaker 1: to have it, and he's like, you want me to
- 33:08Speaker 1: get one too? So we match and I was like, no,
- 33:10Speaker 1: I'm fine because I used him as an aide. That
- 33:12Speaker 1: was only perku dating him like cold his hand and
- 33:16Speaker 1: it would be my AID at the same time. But yeah,
- 33:20Speaker 1: it was like he was always that was the thing too.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I cried once because I was like when I got it,
- 33:26Speaker 1: and I was like, are you still going to hold
- 33:28Speaker 1: my hand when we walk when I use it? And
- 33:31Speaker 1: he was like, yeah, why are you asking this? Like
- 33:34Speaker 1: fu And I was like I just I know because
- 33:36Speaker 1: I never see it. Like that's the thing too. The
- 33:38Speaker 1: aids aren't really shown in a positive light with dating,
- 33:41Speaker 1: so I was like, what do I do? Can I
- 33:44Speaker 1: hold his hand or do I need to and it anymore?
- 33:47Speaker 1: But um, I I've kind of regressed a bit back
- 33:50Speaker 1: since we've been broken up because now I'm back in
- 33:52Speaker 1: the dating world. And when I when I met my ex,
- 33:56Speaker 1: he already kind of knew about my disability and he
- 33:58Speaker 1: watched my channel a lot. I was gonna say, I
- 34:01Speaker 1: wanted to ask you something because I know that you're
- 34:04Speaker 1: also a writer and you contribute to Fearce let you do.
- 34:07Speaker 1: And so you have a few articles, well one article
- 34:09Speaker 1: in particular where you talk about dating and your disability
- 34:14Speaker 1: and like what that's like for you. I don't know
- 34:15Speaker 1: if that's something you want to share and like talking
- 34:17Speaker 1: here on the show, I can do I can do that.
- 34:20Speaker 1: That article was about my first time having sex and
- 34:23Speaker 1: it was with my ex and like my petty I'm
- 34:27Speaker 1: little kidding, like my petty side. I almost sent him
- 34:30Speaker 1: the article to be like hey, um, like I know
- 34:34Speaker 1: you're having a ship time right now, but like at
- 34:36Speaker 1: least something good came out of dating and I got
- 34:38Speaker 1: to fucking make money off of having sex with you, bish,
- 34:41Speaker 1: I got paid. What do you do and still work
- 34:44Speaker 1: in your job? That is like the pettiest thing I've
- 34:46Speaker 1: heard in a while, Like right, and we hear a
- 34:48Speaker 1: lot of petty things. So can you talk about I mean,
- 34:51Speaker 1: if you're comfortable sharing like your experience dating and what's
- 34:55Speaker 1: it like, what is it like for you? I us
- 35:00Speaker 1: now starting to date again. I took just time like
- 35:03Speaker 1: focusing on work and paying stuff because I was just like,
- 35:07Speaker 1: I didn't want to really deal with anything at the moment.
- 35:11Speaker 1: And I was scared because since he knew everything and
- 35:14Speaker 1: my ex and he UM was really good at like
- 35:17Speaker 1: he was really good dating, like he was very good
- 35:19Speaker 1: at learning about my disability, never overstepping his boundaries and
- 35:23Speaker 1: the stuff. In my article, I had said, because I
- 35:25Speaker 1: wear bladder control pads and it still makes me weird
- 35:28Speaker 1: saying it out loud, but I have so many videos
- 35:31Speaker 1: I can't really hide it. But that was my issue
- 35:34Speaker 1: on having sex with him, because I was like, he's
- 35:37Speaker 1: going to see these pads. It's not like I can
- 35:40Speaker 1: hide them. I wear them every day. UM. And leading
- 35:44Speaker 1: up to it, I we were going to watch a
- 35:46Speaker 1: movie and I told him about it and I was
- 35:48Speaker 1: crying because he thought I was going to like say
- 35:50Speaker 1: something like that I've been like cheating or whatever, and
- 35:54Speaker 1: I was just like, I wear these pads and I did.
- 35:56Speaker 1: This is why I didn't want to have sex yet,
- 35:58Speaker 1: because I didn't know if you would find it grow.
- 36:00Speaker 1: And he I will give him credit, he had the
- 36:03Speaker 1: best response to it. He was like I already knew
- 36:06Speaker 1: and I was like how do you know? And he's like,
- 36:07Speaker 1: you have a video, an old one about it. But
- 36:11Speaker 1: I was just waiting for you to tell me. So
- 36:13Speaker 1: would so he was he was watching he would watch
- 36:16Speaker 1: your videos before you guys started dating. Yeah, well, because
- 36:19Speaker 1: I would you consider him like a was he like
- 36:21Speaker 1: a follower, you know, And he's a musician. He's a drummer.
- 36:24Speaker 1: This is why it didn't work out. Musicians. We're still
- 36:33Speaker 1: we're still we both are still paying for Yes, we are.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Well I'm joining that club because I don't laugh like
- 36:42Speaker 1: that of it. But my last visit laughed through the
- 36:46Speaker 1: pain the same, right, laughing instead of crying moments. I
- 36:50Speaker 1: just joked through it all. I'm sorry, do you have
- 36:54Speaker 1: because we have a rule that we really are not
- 36:56Speaker 1: supposed to date. We're not as a datorhook up with
- 36:59Speaker 1: our senners for like followers, Why do you make the
- 37:02Speaker 1: phase that you have because I have. I'm just laughing
- 37:05Speaker 1: because I'm like, there's podcast listeners and followers, and then
- 37:09Speaker 1: there's like I followers. I think when it gets blurry
- 37:14Speaker 1: when they've usually what I have seen them due to
- 37:17Speaker 1: my life. The line actually something that you wanted to
- 37:22Speaker 1: ask earlier, and I forgot, but I'm gonna ask now
- 37:24Speaker 1: because I think it's interesting going back to the talking
- 37:27Speaker 1: and texting, and you mentioned that that was like an
- 37:32Speaker 1: invention by disabled people for and then now we all
- 37:37Speaker 1: utilize it. And then you were also talking about like streets,
- 37:40Speaker 1: like enhancements on the streets and like the things that
- 37:44Speaker 1: disabled individuals have put into place, like all of us
- 37:47Speaker 1: benefit from it. Yeah, but um, there's a little saying
- 37:51Speaker 1: that accessibility benefits everybody, Like if you make things accessible,
- 37:55Speaker 1: it's going to help everyone, regardless if they're disabled or not.
- 38:00Speaker 1: And they're simple things to Like a lot of times
- 38:03Speaker 1: people make fun of those gadgets that are like as
- 38:07Speaker 1: seen on TV. But those gadgets of majority of the time,
- 38:11Speaker 1: we're intentionally for disabled people. But if you market it
- 38:14Speaker 1: to them, the price goes up because it's seen as
- 38:17Speaker 1: a medical so they market it like that. So that
- 38:21Speaker 1: like the slap chop that was for people who don't
- 38:24Speaker 1: have the dexterity to chop with their hairs. Um, snuggies
- 38:28Speaker 1: were made for wheelchair users because the point was that
- 38:33Speaker 1: you could have a full blanket on you but not
- 38:35Speaker 1: get it caught in your wheels. But then people always
- 38:39Speaker 1: like go to. There's one right now that's going around
- 38:42Speaker 1: people are making fun of where it's helping you put
- 38:44Speaker 1: on your socks, and everyone's go to is just to
- 38:49Speaker 1: make fun of it, Like who needs that? That's lazy?
- 38:51Speaker 1: You never think that, like it's a disabled item, that's
- 38:55Speaker 1: just sneakily disabled. I have no idea. I don't know
- 38:58Speaker 1: that either. But even in the recent band of straws
- 39:02Speaker 1: has been a conversation because the percentage of the landfill
- 39:06Speaker 1: is like very small in comparison to everything else, right,
- 39:10Speaker 1: Like I have a video of wh tell that? Because
- 39:14Speaker 1: everyone brings up alternatives and I use a metal straw,
- 39:17Speaker 1: I don't for myself with my disability, I have no
- 39:20Speaker 1: issues with alternative straws. But a lot of people keep
- 39:23Speaker 1: saying all these alternatives, but disabled people keep educating me
- 39:27Speaker 1: like these alternatives aren't safe for us. A lot of
- 39:31Speaker 1: the ones that like biodegrade, a lot of disabled people
- 39:34Speaker 1: take a long time to drink, so it bio degrades,
- 39:37Speaker 1: it can cause choking hazards, um a lot of the
- 39:40Speaker 1: little dysentery into yeah, and then a lot of like
- 39:43Speaker 1: the metal ones, people have allergies to that. There's like
- 39:47Speaker 1: corn and pasta ones. Um, people have allergies to that.
- 39:51Speaker 1: And so also the straw was a disabled invention. It
- 39:54Speaker 1: was only available in hospitals, um, and so there's that's
- 40:00Speaker 1: like a conversation that there's an issue where able people
- 40:02Speaker 1: will take stuff that's made for us and they'll abuse it,
- 40:07Speaker 1: and then that's where it becomes a problem. But then
- 40:09Speaker 1: we're victimized for using it. And then there's the argument, well,
- 40:13Speaker 1: you can just ask for a straw if you need it,
- 40:17Speaker 1: but that comes with harassment. We already get harassed if
- 40:20Speaker 1: no one believing our disabilities, and so if we were
- 40:23Speaker 1: to ask and we don't look like we need it,
- 40:26Speaker 1: they're they're going to start guilt tripping us. And yeah,
- 40:31Speaker 1: so it's like and I mean, I got that video
- 40:33Speaker 1: cut so much like hate from people because they weren't listening,
- 40:36Speaker 1: because I was like, I was like, we can find like,
- 40:39Speaker 1: let's find like ways to maybe improve our recycling of them,
- 40:45Speaker 1: but like work with disabled people to do that. Don't
- 40:47Speaker 1: make these decisions without including us. Because people got mad
- 40:52Speaker 1: and I said, this can cause people to die, a
- 40:54Speaker 1: lot of these things lead to death, and they're like,
- 40:56Speaker 1: you're exaggerating, and I'm like, I'm not Yeah, I'm sorry,
- 41:02Speaker 1: go ahead. I'm like I was just gonna say, and
- 41:03Speaker 1: that's like what people fail. They think we're just we're
- 41:06Speaker 1: being over dramatic or like an s g W that
- 41:10Speaker 1: I get constant in my videos right when you're stating
- 41:13Speaker 1: a need that you know your community needs. So, UM,
- 41:16Speaker 1: I think we're coming to an end. But I wanted
- 41:18Speaker 1: to um and on a note that our listeners um or,
- 41:24Speaker 1: I want to ask this question. I'm want to pose
- 41:25Speaker 1: this question to you, UM for everyone listening. What are
- 41:28Speaker 1: ways that we can be allies to folks in the
- 41:31Speaker 1: disabled community or folks with any type of disabilities. What
- 41:35Speaker 1: are some ways that we can use our to be
- 41:38Speaker 1: to be allies or accomplices. And and I want to add,
- 41:42Speaker 1: especially if you identify as Latino X, because you did
- 41:45Speaker 1: mention that there's an element of just like disbelief that
- 41:49Speaker 1: disability even exists, like in Latino X communities. Yeah, I
- 41:52Speaker 1: find in like the English, like I guess white community,
- 41:56Speaker 1: it's not perfect at all, um, but the more willing
- 42:00Speaker 1: to be like, okay they're disabled, and like at least
- 42:03Speaker 1: kind of have a conversation. But in the Latino community,
- 42:07Speaker 1: I find like no one wants to talk about it.
- 42:09Speaker 1: I don't know how to explain my disability in Spanish
- 42:12Speaker 1: because I was never taught the words to explain it. UM.
- 42:15Speaker 1: I don't know if that was intentional or maybe my
- 42:17Speaker 1: parents just also didn't know what to say UM. But
- 42:21Speaker 1: that also leads to just I can't I feel like
- 42:25Speaker 1: in Latin X spaces, I can't ask for accommodations because
- 42:30Speaker 1: I don't think it will be understood as easy as
- 42:33Speaker 1: if I was just in a non Latin X space.
- 42:35Speaker 1: So for for ally ship, right, I mean that's important
- 42:38Speaker 1: for folks that like organize events, organized parties, whatever, whatever
- 42:42Speaker 1: type of the work the organizers do, like also take
- 42:46Speaker 1: into taking into account accessibility and if you're not sure,
- 42:50Speaker 1: like ask a disabled person to make me help um honously,
- 42:55Speaker 1: Like not every accessibility tool I need or whatever I
- 42:59Speaker 1: suggest will be for everyone, but like there's like standards
- 43:02Speaker 1: like have an interpreter, have someone that's open captioning, because
- 43:06Speaker 1: not every person that's deaf can that knows American Sign
- 43:10Speaker 1: language UM, and then having like reserve disabled seating at
- 43:14Speaker 1: the front because a lot of people put it at
- 43:16Speaker 1: the back and it's like we can't see anything. And
- 43:19Speaker 1: then a lot of times. Wheelchair accessibility for where they
- 43:23Speaker 1: can be is always at the back and so no
- 43:25Speaker 1: one can see anything. Um and if you have staff
- 43:28Speaker 1: at an event, have them educate on like what that
- 43:34Speaker 1: there's a diversity of something that might use this. Now
- 43:36Speaker 1: I'm like even thinking like for like show, Oh my god,
- 43:42Speaker 1: what if we had what if we had a sign
- 43:45Speaker 1: language interpreter there? I think that that's the great idea.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Thoughts are being thought. I love it, so please share
- 43:54Speaker 1: with everybody as we as we end. Thank you so
