The DiCecco Daily Bonus Pod: Examining Eagles Trade For CB Jaire Alexander · Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast

Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened everybody? Welcome into another edition of to
• 0:12
Speaker 1: CHECKO Daily. It's Andrew de Checo here from inside the
• 0:15
Speaker 1: Birds dot Com. And I know I recorded a podcast
• 0:18
Speaker 1: earlier in the day, but the Eagles on Saturday afternoon
• 0:21
Speaker 1: struck another trade, which means it's time to deliver another
• 0:25
Speaker 1: podcast to the ITB faithful and those who listen much
• 0:29
Speaker 1: appreciate it. As always, the Eagles announced that they've agreed
• 0:33
Speaker 1: to acquire cornerback jay R Alexander and a twenty twenty
• 0:36
Speaker 1: seven seventh round pick from the Ravens in exchange for
• 0:39
  Speaker 1: a twenty twenty.
• 0:39
Speaker 2: Six sixth round pick.
• 0:42
Speaker 1: The team also plays safety Marcus Epps and outside linebacker
• 0:45
Speaker 1: as he's o Julari on injured reserve. O Julari goes
• 0:49
Speaker 1: on injured reserve with the hamstring injury that kept him
• 0:51
Speaker 1: out of the Giants game, and Marcus Apps looked to
• 0:54
Speaker 1: be banged up in the postgame locker room following the
• 0:57
Speaker 1: egles thirty eight to twenty win over the New York Giants.
• 1:00
Speaker 1: So those two moves go along with the trade, and
• 1:03
Speaker 1: let's take a look at JayR Alexander, because I understand
• 1:07
Speaker 1: that there's intrigue. This is a player who is a
• 1:10
Speaker 1: household name and he's been an All Pro. He's been
• 1:14
Speaker 1: a Pro bowler in twenty twenty and twenty twenty two.
• 1:17
Speaker 1: But you also have to look at the current product,
• 1:21
Speaker 1: the current player, and when the Ravens acquired JayR Alexander,
• 1:28
Speaker 1: there was a lot of intrigue there.
• 1:29
Speaker 2: There was a lot of.
• 1:30
Speaker 1: Anticipation about what he could potentially add to their defense.
• 1:34
Speaker 1: But as it turned out, Alexander, who has struggled with
• 1:37
Speaker 1: injuries in his career, he was healthy, but he always
• 1:40
Speaker 1: played in two games for the Baltimore Ravens this season,
• 1:43
Speaker 1: logging sixty one snaps, and the Ravens defense has really struggled,
• 1:49
Speaker 1: and that's putting it mildly. So the fact that he
• 1:51
Speaker 1: couldn't get onto the field should raise some eyebrows, and understandably,
• 1:58
Speaker 1: you have to look at the situation, the scheme. Perhaps
• 2:01
Speaker 1: that wasn't a fit. We don't know until we talk
• 2:03
Speaker 1: to him, but for a player like that who does
• 2:06
Speaker 1: have that pedigree, you should be able to fit in
• 2:09
Speaker 1: there and make plays or at least factor into the
• 2:12
Speaker 1: cornerback rotation or be able to make some kind of
• 2:15
Speaker 1: an impact on a defense that's clearly struggling to stop
• 2:17
Speaker 1: anyone on the ground and through the air.
• 2:20
Speaker 2: He hasn't been able to do that.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: So, while this is a player who the many are
• 2:25
Speaker 1: familiar with, you often have to look at is this
• 2:29
Speaker 1: an upgrade? Is this a considerable upgrade over what they
• 2:33
Speaker 1: already have, or is this more or less similar to
• 2:37
Speaker 1: their cornerback situation right now opposite Quinnon Mitchell. So he
• 2:41
Speaker 1: joins a group that includes Quinnon Mitchell, Cooper De Jean,
• 2:46
Speaker 1: Michael Carter, Keethy Ringo, Adorri Jackson, Mac McWilliams, and then
• 2:52
Speaker 1: don't forget Jacoreyan Bennett is expected to return. His twenty
• 2:55
Speaker 1: one day practice window is opened, so he should be
• 2:58
Speaker 1: returning to the fold in short order, which leaves a
• 3:03
Speaker 1: crowded house there at the cornerback position. But let's look
• 3:07
Speaker 1: at the pros the pros for adding someone like a
• 3:10
Speaker 1: JayR Alexander who has inside outside versatility. He has good
• 3:15
Speaker 1: ball skills, he's sticky in coverage. He's someone who can
• 3:20
Speaker 1: help the Eagles in terms of bringing optionality. Michael Carter
• 3:24
Speaker 1: as well, he can play slot, he can play safety.
• 3:27
Speaker 1: Jay R Alexander has inside versatility as well, so in theory,
• 3:31
Speaker 1: the move gives Vic Vangio some optionality, But in my estimation,
• 3:36
Speaker 1: I think the biggest winner in this trade is Kielee
• 3:40
Speaker 1: Ringo because I don't believe that the Eagles made a
• 3:43
Speaker 1: move here that drastically moves the needle one way or
• 3:47
Speaker 1: the other. And for Kimhlely Ringo, he's a young player.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: I thought he did some good things against the Giants.
• 3:52
Speaker 1: He wasn't targeted that much. But for a younger player
• 3:56
Speaker 1: who's been in the system, this is his third year,
• 4:00
Speaker 1: they've been working with him for a while, I think
• 4:02
Speaker 1: he has the most upside of the corners that include
• 4:06
Speaker 1: a Dori Jackson, Jacoryan Bennett, and now jay R Alexander. Now,
• 4:12
Speaker 1: I was very curious and I'm still curious to see
• 4:15
Speaker 1: what Jacoreyan Bennett could.
• 4:16
Speaker 2: Provide as long as he remains on the roster.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: But the sense that I've got and he listened to
• 4:21
Speaker 1: Vic Vangiel on Tuesday, he's almost at every turn sort
• 4:27
Speaker 1: of suggested that he does have confidence in Keighy Ringo.
• 4:30
Speaker 1: That to me has been very evident, and I think
• 4:33
Speaker 1: that Kighley is starting to build some confidence off of
• 4:37
Speaker 1: the last couple of outings against the Vikings when he
• 4:39
Speaker 1: had to come in for an injured a Dori Jackson,
• 4:43
Speaker 1: and then against the Giants as well. Jay R Alexander
• 4:46
Speaker 1: has to learn a new system. That's something that should
• 4:49
Speaker 1: be taken into account. And I just can't move past
• 4:52
Speaker 1: the fact that he wasn't able to help the Ravens
• 4:56
Speaker 1: and their defense was really leaking oil in a big way.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: And for someone that has that level of success in
• 5:03
Speaker 1: the NFL, they can take the football away, they can
• 5:07
Speaker 1: play inside, they can play outside. They're a highly intelligent
• 5:10
Speaker 1: football player like jay Or Alexander, and the Ravens couldn't
• 5:13
Speaker 1: make use out of them and he was healthy.
• 5:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, that raises some concern.
• 5:17
Speaker 1: And then you also, as I mentioned, have to look
• 5:19
Speaker 1: at the fact that he needs to learn the system,
• 5:22
Speaker 1: so you have to wonder when he would be ready
• 5:24
Speaker 1: and able to help the defense in a tangible way.
• 5:28
Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
• 5:32
Speaker 3: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
• 5:35
Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
• 5:40
Speaker 3: the dispensary for sports fans just minutes outside of Philly,
• 5:44
Speaker 3: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
• 5:47
Speaker 3: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
• 5:51
Speaker 3: Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
• 5:55
Speaker 3: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you
• 5:59
Speaker 3: walk in. Plus, they carry only the best quality cannabis
• 6:02
Speaker 3: at the fairest prices, so whether you're stocking up for
• 6:06
Speaker 3: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a big win,
• 6:09
Speaker 3: you know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying. They
• 6:13
Speaker 3: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
• 6:18
Speaker 3: service members, and healthcare pros. Cammed in Apothecary, top quality cannabis,
• 6:23
Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
• 6:26
  Speaker 3: one and up.
• 6:28
Speaker 1: That's not to suggest that the move is bad or
• 6:32
Speaker 1: anything of that nature, because it does provide optionality. It
• 6:36
Speaker 1: gives them some depth options and ones that are experienced
• 6:41
Speaker 1: at that They played a ton of football in Michael
• 6:43
Speaker 1: Carter and in JayR Alexander. But I don't view this
• 6:47
  Speaker 1: as a slam dunk. I don't view him as a
• 6:50
Speaker 1: set it and forget it starter opposite Quinnyon Mitchell. I'm
• 6:53
Speaker 1: also curious to see what the fallout is from this
• 6:55
Speaker 1: because I have a hard time envisioning the Eagles keeping
• 6:59
Speaker 1: all the corners that I mentioned and then activating Jacryan
• 7:02
Speaker 1: Bennett to the fifty three. It becomes a crowded house
• 7:04
Speaker 1: and there's always so many roles for.
• 7:08
Speaker 2: That room. So it does leave a lot of questions.
• 7:11
Speaker 1: And again, we're not going to have an understanding as
• 7:15
Speaker 1: to what went on in Baltimore until we talk to
• 7:18
Speaker 1: JayR Alexander. We're not going to have an idea of
• 7:22
Speaker 1: how Vic Vangio chooses to deploy him, how he views
• 7:25
Speaker 1: jay R Alexander and Michael Carter for that matter, And
• 7:29
Speaker 1: there's a lot of I'm intrigued to see how this
• 7:33
Speaker 1: all shakes out, because the Eagles clearly looked at Corner
• 7:37
Speaker 1: as an opportunity to improve the roster, and they've added
• 7:40
Speaker 1: a couple players, but you know, to me, and until
• 7:44
Speaker 1: you see them on the field, it's kind of hard
• 7:45
Speaker 1: to make any sort of determination one way or the other.
• 7:49
Speaker 1: But at least initially for me, that doesn't do a lot.
• 7:53
Speaker 1: And they're not definitive upgrades. I'm speaking about jay R
• 7:56
Speaker 1: Alexander here. He's not a definitive upgrade this verse of
• 8:00
Speaker 1: him based off of what they have right now. Now
• 8:05
Speaker 1: there's the other side of things where he does have
• 8:08
Speaker 1: some familiarity with Eagles defensive backs coach Christian Parker because
• 8:13
Speaker 1: they overlapped in Green Bay in twenty nineteen and twenty twenty,
• 8:16
Speaker 1: where Parker served as the Green Bay Packers defensive quality
• 8:20
Speaker 1: control coach. So perhaps that plays into it a little bit.
• 8:23
Speaker 1: Maybe he's able to tap in to his previous skill
• 8:28
Speaker 1: set get him to play at a high level. Maybe
• 8:31
Speaker 1: this is a low risk addition that pays dividends for
• 8:34
  Speaker 1: the Eagles. But I'm a little skeptical. I think that's
• 8:39
Speaker 1: probably the right word to frame it right now, until
• 8:42
Speaker 1: you see him on the field, until you see what
• 8:43
  Speaker 1: version of Jay R Alexander you're getting. I was a
• 8:46
Speaker 1: big fan of Alexander coming out of the draft at Louisville.
• 8:50
Speaker 1: I was a big fan of his game with the
• 8:51
Speaker 1: Green Bay Packers. Unfortunately, injuries sort of limited what he
• 8:56
Speaker 1: was able to do in Green Bay. But this is
• 8:58
Speaker 1: a player who's very sticky in coverage and his football
• 9:00
Speaker 1: intelligence jumps off the tape. But again, why wasn't he
• 9:05
Speaker 1: able to factor into the Ravens defensive plans?
• 9:09
Speaker 2: Could be a multitude of reasons. We'll find out.
• 9:12
Speaker 1: Maybe it just simply wasn't a good scheme fit and
• 9:14
Speaker 1: a change of scenery will serve him well. It can't
• 9:17
Speaker 1: hurt to add another player and provide some more flexibility
• 9:21
Speaker 1: for Fangio. But you see the name, and I understand
• 9:25
Speaker 1: why there was some excitement and maybe a little bit
• 9:28
Speaker 1: of intrigue to see what he's able to provide. But
• 9:30
Speaker 1: I would say be cautious in the optimism here because
• 9:34
Speaker 1: there was a lot of excitement and anticipation on the
• 9:38
Speaker 1: heels of the John Mechi trade. There was a lot
• 9:41
Speaker 1: of anticipation on the heels of the Jaquorian Bennett trade.
• 9:45
Speaker 1: Bennetts played just twenty four snaps for the Eagles. He's
• 9:48
Speaker 1: been injured, but he wasn't in line to start even
• 9:52
Speaker 1: Week one, and you have to just kind of let
• 9:55
Speaker 1: things play out a little bit. But these are my
• 9:56
Speaker 1: initial reactions to the trade, and I'm excited to see
• 10:01
Speaker 1: where it goes from here, and if the Eagles continue
• 10:03
Speaker 1: to churn the roster a little bit with another trade,
• 10:06
Speaker 1: we'll see. We have the deadline fast approaching. I've mentioned
• 10:10
Speaker 1: in the previous podcast where I believe my priority was
• 10:15
Speaker 1: and where the secondary and third priority were we'll see
• 10:18
Speaker 1: if the Edge Rusher group is ultimately addressed.
• 10:21
Speaker 2: There's some smoke around it a little bit, but we'll.
• 10:24
Speaker 1: See if anything really manifest and then we'll be doing
• 10:26
Speaker 1: another podcast and breaking it all down. But what's really
• 10:29
Speaker 1: fascinating is that the Eagles are going to have some
• 10:31
Speaker 1: different pieces to work with when they return next week
• 10:34
Speaker 1: to the Novacare Complex, and we'll see how those different
• 10:38
Speaker 1: puzzle pieces fit into the overall equation.
• 10:41
Speaker 2: But for now, these are my thoughts.
• 10:44
Speaker 1: A lot can change, but that's going to do it
• 10:47
Speaker 1: for this edition of The Checko Daily.
