- 0:39SPEAKER_07: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talking Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_07: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: Tristan, how you doing, buddy?
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: I'm feeling six and oh.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: I'm feeling bowl eligible all week.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: I'm eating all of my meals out of bowls.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: And the only utensil I'm using is the one that looks like a bowl, also called a spoon, but that is also a bowl as well.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: So I told my wife, I'm not eating with a fork, I'm eating with the bowl because Texas Tech is bowl eligible.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: And then she asks me, Why are you like this?
- 1:21SPEAKER_04: And is football season over yet?
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: And I said, Not until we win that natty, baby.
- 1:26SPEAKER_07: That's it.
- 1:27SPEAKER_07: 6 0.
- 1:29SPEAKER_07: You're eating nothing.
- 1:29SPEAKER_07: What are you eating?
- 1:30SPEAKER_07: Soup, cereal, chili, chili.
- 1:32SPEAKER_07: Chili.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Oh wow.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: It's is it chili season?
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: It's always chili.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: It's not always chili season, but it's we're it would we're approaching chili season.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: We're getting there.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: We're getting the chili season.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: You know, I'm not against pasta.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: We've been having pasta.
- 1:47SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: Which is not easy to eat with a spoon.
- 1:51SPEAKER_07: Like that's better with a fork.
- 1:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:54SPEAKER_07: You're just refusing.
- 1:55SPEAKER_07: That's tough.
- 1:56SPEAKER_07: It really depends on the noodle type.
- 1:57SPEAKER_07: Like penne, disaster.
- 1:59SPEAKER_07: Disaster trying to eat that with a spoon.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: Look, on talking pasta, we get into the nitty-gritty and we figure out why the wing winguini works better than the bow tie.
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: I almost said bolo tie.
- 2:12SPEAKER_07: Bolo tie.
- 2:13SPEAKER_07: We saw some bolo ties.
- 2:14SPEAKER_07: Well, that's past weekend.
- 2:18SPEAKER_07: We were there.
- 2:20SPEAKER_07: Tristan, we have to do something before we discuss our trip to Levic.
- 2:23SPEAKER_07: What is that thing that we do?
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: You gotta play a really good song.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: Play the song.
- 2:30SPEAKER_08: Red Raider coming at you.
- 2:32SPEAKER_08: Riding through the night for the fury of West Texas wins.
- 2:38SPEAKER_08: Red Raider coming at you.
- 2:40SPEAKER_08: What a beautiful side.
- 2:42SPEAKER_08: The Texas Tech Red Raiders riding riding again.
- 2:48SPEAKER_07: What a beautiful weekend it was in the great city of Lubbock.
- 2:52SPEAKER_07: Thanks, Mr.
- 2:53SPEAKER_07: President.
- 2:55SPEAKER_07: No, we're not doing that today.
- 2:57SPEAKER_07: We're not doing that.
- 2:58SPEAKER_07: No.
- 2:58SPEAKER_07: We're not doing that today.
- 3:00SPEAKER_07: Um we were in Lubbock, Texas, uh, for the first time since last year.
- 3:04SPEAKER_07: It was beautiful.
- 3:05SPEAKER_07: It was homecoming week.
- 3:06SPEAKER_07: We had ourselves a time.
- 3:08SPEAKER_07: We drank too many beers.
- 3:10SPEAKER_07: Too many.
- 3:10SPEAKER_07: We visited the Blue Light Live.
- 3:13SPEAKER_07: We ate at Eby Mays.
- 3:15SPEAKER_07: We went to a Texas Tech football game, and by golly, we won.
- 3:20SPEAKER_07: And what a weekend.
- 3:22SPEAKER_04: We trashed those birds with those pilgrim shoes with the buckles on it.
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: And I don't think that bird is so happy anymore, dude.
- 3:30SPEAKER_04: He's always got that smug like look on his face.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: And we just we pulled out our hands and we just smacked it right off that goofy beak of his, dude.
- 3:38SPEAKER_07: So many things wrong with the Kansas Jayhawks logo.
- 3:41SPEAKER_07: I hate it.
- 3:42SPEAKER_07: It's stupid.
- 3:43SPEAKER_04: He could have just paused there after so many things wrong with the Kansas Jayhawks.
- 3:48SPEAKER_07: That too.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: Especially with their behavior this past weekend.
- 3:53SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 3:54SPEAKER_07: You want to start there?
- 3:55SPEAKER_07: Because I figure we should.
- 3:56SPEAKER_07: Okay, let's start there.
- 3:58SPEAKER_07: Two biggest losers of the week here.
- 4:00SPEAKER_07: Yes! All right.
- 4:01SPEAKER_07: One is Lance Lipold.
- 4:04SPEAKER_07: Two is Brett Venables.
- 4:05SPEAKER_07: We'll get to Brent in a second.
- 4:06SPEAKER_07: Let's talk about Lance Lipold here.
- 4:08SPEAKER_07: Alright.
- 4:09SPEAKER_07: So you get beat pretty bad.
- 4:13SPEAKER_07: 42-17.
- 4:14SPEAKER_07: Your team doesn't score in the second half.
- 4:16SPEAKER_07: You get run all over the field.
- 4:19SPEAKER_07: And you go in your post-game presser, and the first thing you do is you complain about the tortillas.
- 4:27SPEAKER_07: And other weapons, uh, apparently, that were thrown on the field, allegedly thrown on the field.
- 4:35SPEAKER_07: Um Lance is a dork.
- 4:38SPEAKER_07: Lance is a whiner, Lance is a complainer.
- 4:40SPEAKER_07: Your team got beat to shreds, and you're over here complaining about flat pieces of dough ramming into your team.
- 4:50SPEAKER_07: It's uh it's sad.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: It's honestly it's sad.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: It's a bad look, dude.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: You just look like a sore loser.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: Like that's the whole time was like, this is just sore loser vibes, dude.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: Just say, like, wow, what a crazy environment that was.
- 5:05SPEAKER_04: I mean, I can't tell you how many tortillas we pulled off our helmets, you know, and all that.
- 5:08SPEAKER_07: You don't even you don't even have to do that, you don't even have to praise it.
- 5:11SPEAKER_07: You can yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:13SPEAKER_07: And even if you wanted to complain about it, which clearly he did, take it up with the Big 12, man.
- 5:18SPEAKER_07: You don't need to go in your post-game presser.
- 5:20SPEAKER_07: You don't need to on the on the post-game handshake with Joey McGuire say you need to do something about this.
- 5:26SPEAKER_07: Like Joey is in charge of all of these 63,000 people that are in the stands right here.
- 5:33SPEAKER_07: He's done his job.
- 5:34SPEAKER_07: He said it in every post-game and pregame presser since the season started.
- 5:39SPEAKER_07: They had a whole Kirby Hokutt press conference about the tortillas, the tortilla rule that the Big 12 decided was now all of a sudden just the worst thing in the world ever.
- 5:51SPEAKER_07: College sports are great because of these stupid traditions.
- 5:57SPEAKER_07: We have grown men barking at 18-year-olds in Athens, Georgia.
- 6:02SPEAKER_07: And younger, and younger.
- 6:05SPEAKER_07: We have tortillas tossed around a stadium, we have an eagle flying around the stadium, and people go crazy for it.
- 6:14SPEAKER_07: Nothing makes sense about these traditions, but they're fun.
- 6:18SPEAKER_07: Why are you taking away our traditions?
- 6:20SPEAKER_07: Why are you taking away the fun of this sport?
- 6:23SPEAKER_07: It's ridiculous.
- 6:25SPEAKER_07: It's getting worse and worse by the year, and people like Lance Leipold are the reason for that.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, dude.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: If people are talking about like wiser decline and game attendance, you know, why does why does interest seem to wane outside of certain zones of the sport?
- 6:41SPEAKER_04: And this is exactly why.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: You get bureaucratic, you get petty, you get sterile.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm saying?
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: Like it's like we are the NFL is a TV product, and the charm about college football is it's a live product.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: Like, sure, it's great to turn on the TV, but there's no matching a college football game day atmosphere.
- 7:01SPEAKER_04: Same can be said about the basketball product as well, is that the energy is found locally, it's not found on your TV screen where most people are turning in nationally, you know, with a lot more money on the line with it with gambling and all that jazz.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: It's just a different operation.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: So wherever you're complaining about this kind of stuff, you're just trying to suck the charm out of it.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: And again, I just keep coming back to you, just sound like a sore loser, dude.
- 7:24SPEAKER_04: Like you're finding something to complain about after you got your behind handed to you, okay?
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: Like you're trying to brush off the game so you can focus on something to detract from your actual frustration.
- 7:35SPEAKER_04: And I know you're just blowing off steam, you're just hot, but like you know, you're you're paid a lot of money to act professionally in those situations and just be a football coach rather than a big fat baby.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm saying?
- 7:47SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I uh I hated it, it was stupid.
- 7:50SPEAKER_07: He deserves all the hate that he's getting from Texas Tech fans.
- 7:53SPEAKER_07: We're not gonna even talk about the knife thing, man.
- 7:55SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, apparently there was you know a knife that was found on the field by tech officials, they're looking into it, whatever, dude.
- 8:04SPEAKER_07: If one, even if this is the worst case scenario of a of a tech fan throwing a knife, it's it's one stupid idiot that doesn't deserve to be in the stadium anymore.
- 8:14SPEAKER_07: So it's this is so dumb.
- 8:17SPEAKER_04: I hate I hate this.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: I agree, you know, we could leave that part there, but I will say, watching the way Joey reacted on the field was pretty awesome.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, in a way, he'll just say, What do you want me to do about it, man?
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: And you know, just yank it out the no-no words.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: He needs to put some soap in his mouth after that.
- 8:33SPEAKER_04: But it's just like, come on, man, really trying to shake your hand, and you're like, you're gonna start what uh complaining to HR to him.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: Like, dude.
- 8:42SPEAKER_07: It was kind of funny because Joey was wanted to be cordial at first.
- 8:45SPEAKER_07: He could tell he was like, he was like, Yeah, I hear you, and then all of a sudden he's just like, Well, what do you want me to do about it?
- 8:50SPEAKER_07: It's like it clicked into his head, right?
- 8:53SPEAKER_07: Because he wasn't expecting him to say anything like that, but apparently they're good, whatever.
- 8:57SPEAKER_07: It was lame, it was stupid.
- 8:59SPEAKER_07: Lance Lightbold's one of the losers of the week.
- 9:01SPEAKER_07: Yep.
- 9:01SPEAKER_07: All right, you you want to know the other loser of the week?
- 9:04SPEAKER_07: Boom.
- 9:05SPEAKER_07: Brent Venables is the loser of the week.
- 9:08SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_07: He just came out today because he quoted, and I don't know if this was in a uh uh weekly press or I don't know where it came from, but the quote was making its rounds around Twitter.
- 9:19SPEAKER_07: Um, he says, This isn't the old Big 12 days where Oklahoma destroys everybody every single week except one game of the year.
- 9:30SPEAKER_07: The Big 12 conference quote tweeted that and responded and said just a fact, just a plain simple fact, Brent Venables lost eight conference games in his two seasons in the Big 12.
- 9:47SPEAKER_07: Way to go, Big 12.
- 9:49SPEAKER_07: That was awesome.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: That's awesome, and as the Big 12 conference, you gotta keep doing that, dude, because everyone that wasn't a whiny baby OU fan loved it, dude.
- 10:01SPEAKER_04: So, and even some OU fans thought it was funny too.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: But like it's just like, come on, dude.
- 10:07SPEAKER_04: And was he responding to like the adversity or whoever they're facing after losing to you?
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Oh, you mean the same team you played for 25 years in the Big 12, dude?
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Like, what you can't even use that, like wrong game.
- 10:22SPEAKER_07: He was clearly talking about the history of Oklahoma, but you as Brent Venables cannot say that.
- 10:29SPEAKER_07: You can't say that.
- 10:30SPEAKER_07: You're the one Oklahoma coach that didn't succeed in the Big 12.
- 10:34SPEAKER_07: Like, you can't be the guy to say that, you can't speak for what Bob Stoops did at in the Big 12 conference, just because you're now the head coach of Oklahoma, who, by the way, is in one of their worst stretches in a long, long time right now of football.
- 10:49SPEAKER_07: You just can't do that.
- 10:50SPEAKER_07: And the Big 12 clapped back, and that was awesome because nobody, not nobody, I won't say nobody, very few people in the national media like to give the Big 12 the credit that I think that they they at least deserve more credit, you know.
- 11:06SPEAKER_07: Like, you don't have to give them this.
- 11:08SPEAKER_07: I'm not asking for the same attention that the SEC gets, I'm not asking for the same attention the Big Ten gets, but man, we need to have at least something here.
- 11:16SPEAKER_07: Like, how about just a segment on your on your show, Josh Pate, or just a segment on your show, unnecessary roughness, if you like that kind of stuff, or one segment on your show solid verbal.
- 11:29SPEAKER_07: Like, guys, we gotta give just an ounce of credit to the Big 12.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and before I before I leave leave Brent on that part, it's I mean that's just like double crappy.
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: Like, I mean, it's kind of it's kind of a a jerky move to say in general, you know.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: It's like, dude, what like that's that is not your reality, first of all.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and second of all, you played ball at Kansas State, dude.
- 11:53SPEAKER_04: Like your albumader is still in that conference, you know.
- 11:56SPEAKER_04: It's like, I understand they're not your employer, but dude, come on, you don't have any love at love and respect for your uh old school.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: Like, come on, dude, pull your head out of your ass.
- 12:05SPEAKER_04: Um, but it's uh yeah, I I fully agree with that.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: And it's what kind of chaffs me about all that is you'll hear over and over again, it kind of feels like this, it's just almost like this media hit that they're like oblig obliged to say about the Big 12 every time.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: Like, oh, this is my favorite conference in America.
- 12:23SPEAKER_04: This is the most competitive conference in America, this is America's conference, but then they won't say a word after that.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: Like, oh, this is like this thing you love and you love talking about, love watching, then why do you only talk about the SEC in Big Ten then?
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: Like, what's where's the where's the love in uh all these games, which are still a blast to watch?
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: And we have four teams ranked.
- 12:45SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's that's nearly that's uh what a fit nearly a fifth of the top 25.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: So come on.
- 12:51SPEAKER_07: And and three of them are too low.
- 12:54SPEAKER_07: Like exactly three of them are too low, like they're just not getting the love that they deserve.
- 12:59SPEAKER_07: And the unfortunately, it's going to affect seating and all sorts of stuff down the line.
- 13:04SPEAKER_07: For I'm not saying Texas Tech is going to be there, but if we are there, it will affect that type of stuff.
- 13:11SPEAKER_07: And that is the kind of stuff that this national attention gives, is at least shines a light on, you know, this conference and some of these teams that are playing really darn good football right now, which happens to be us.
- 13:25SPEAKER_07: But also Utah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_07: They're playing really well right now.
- 13:27SPEAKER_07: Like BYU is undefeated, and they're number 15 in the country.
- 13:31SPEAKER_07: Like, I mean, I get their schedule and everything, but like this is ridiculous.
- 13:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's just it just gives me heartburn because a lot of people will cry crocodile tears about the state of college football or think about college sports in general, about how you know all the attention has risen up to the top into this consolidated world we're living in.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: But then they'll just live in that consolidated peak.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: Like they'll they'll pretend and act like nothing else exists.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: And if it does, it's just quaint and cute to look at every once in a while.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: And it just that sort of stuff trickles down to uh the amount of uh uh media uh revenue will be given to those other programs down the route line because they'll be seen as a lesser product or a better product, depending on how you it's it's it's always talked about, looked at, and viewed.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: So, you know, we live in we live in this upper middle class zone of college sports, so we're pretty lucky, but you know, we could it could still be better, of course.
- 14:22SPEAKER_04: And it's just frustrating.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: I feel you, dog.
- 14:25SPEAKER_07: Let's talk about beating Kansas because we kicked their butt in the Jones.
- 14:29SPEAKER_07: 42-17, Texas Tech defeats Kansas, and I want to start here.
- 14:36SPEAKER_07: We ran all over them.
- 14:38SPEAKER_07: This defensive line has been getting the credit that they deserve at Texas Tech, they've been amazing.
- 14:44SPEAKER_07: This offensive line seems like it's not getting the credit that they deserve this year.
- 14:50SPEAKER_07: Better and better every week.
- 14:52SPEAKER_07: I know the penalties are annoying, and the penalties are a lot sometimes, and they are a real backbreaker and a lead cause for some of our red zone issues.
- 15:01SPEAKER_07: But Dan Dickey ran for 263 yards this game with holes that we could have ran through.
- 15:09SPEAKER_07: I mean, now we wouldn't have made it all the way to the end zone, but we could have at least gotten 10 yards.
- 15:16SPEAKER_07: You know, like what these guys are doing on the offensive line is so vastly improved from what we've seen at Texas Tech these last few years, and I love it.
- 15:27SPEAKER_07: I love watching these guys play.
- 15:28SPEAKER_07: I think it's a really cohesive unit right now.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: I thought you were gonna say, I'm gonna start here.
- 15:32SPEAKER_04: And I mean, this all fits.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna start here and be like the first play.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna start there, you know.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: It just like, I mean, that really that really just kind of ties a bow onto exactly what you're talking about, right?
- 15:42SPEAKER_04: Between the line and the running game.
- 15:44SPEAKER_04: And can't they say that Cam Dickey is still running to this day uh on Kansas.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: That man was on a mission, he's out there on those wheat fields right now, waving that wheat, just just with his speed, dog.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Like he is he's he's out there, and he that was the Cam Dickey game, dude.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: Obvious MVP of the game.
- 16:02SPEAKER_07: Oh, absolutely.
- 16:03SPEAKER_07: I mean, he was the Walter Camp, you know, offensive player of the week as well, so got some love um from the greater college football community, which was awesome.
- 16:12SPEAKER_07: But we talked about it last week a little bit with simplifying the playbook and you know to get less penalties, and what the coaching staff did this game after we had a horrific second quarter uh by all standards, horrific on defense.
- 16:27SPEAKER_07: Will Barron got hurt, will had to come in, he threw a pick.
- 16:31SPEAKER_07: It was just an all-around bad showing for Texas Tech in that second quarter, and they go into halftime.
- 16:36SPEAKER_07: Kansas has all the momentum, and Joey and Mac Lefwich and Josh Cochran and Clay McGuire and all of the offensive staff just said, All right, we're gonna run it down their throat.
- 16:48SPEAKER_07: And they ran it down their throat in the second half.
- 16:50SPEAKER_07: Whether it be Will Hammond, whether it still be Cam Dickey, Jacoby Williams had a lot of good runs as well in there.
- 16:56SPEAKER_07: It's just incredible.
- 16:58SPEAKER_07: And the offensive line and the team in general only had seven penalties for 77 yards, but two of those were fifth were 30 yards, and they were because of the crowd because we were throwing tortillas.
- 17:09SPEAKER_07: So it this team is getting better and better, and it starts with this offensive line.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: You know, it's we obviously had an abysmal second quarter, but that is as close as Kansas ever got the entire game.
- 17:24SPEAKER_04: They were they were barely in it in the second quarter.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: Okay, barely might not be fair enough.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: They were hardly in it in the second quarter.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: Oh, obviously, due to a lot of our own mistakes, like like you said, with the Willie Hammond pick and uh Barron going down.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: He needs that boy needs to stop running.
- 17:42SPEAKER_04: Um but dude, we we still came out and dominated them.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: We are dominating every single team we are playing, even if it gets close for a moment, which will happen in the division one ball game of football.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: You are still controlling every game you've been in.
- 18:02SPEAKER_04: The game is still being played on your terms every single quarter you played football in.
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: So just the amount of control that both our coaching staff and players have imposed on the gridiron week in and week out has been incredible.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: I just don't know if I've ever seen such a balanced, complete Texas Tech football team that is able to hold the other team in the palm of their hand like they have had.
- 18:32SPEAKER_07: You want to hear a fun stat?
- 18:34SPEAKER_04: I like fun stats.
- 18:36SPEAKER_07: Texas Tech has allowed seven total points in the second halves of their Big 12 game so far.
- 18:44SPEAKER_07: Seven.
- 18:45SPEAKER_07: Seven.
- 18:46SPEAKER_07: One touchdown, and it was in the Utah game.
- 18:48SPEAKER_07: It was one touchdown in the Utah game.
- 18:50SPEAKER_07: Houston was shut out completely in the second half, Kansas was shut out completely in the second half.
- 18:55SPEAKER_07: Two out of the three of these Big 12 games have been on the road, by the way.
- 18:59SPEAKER_07: So outscoring opponents in the second half, 55 to 7, the Texas Tech Red Raiders through three Big 12 games.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: That's a pretty good stat.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: I thought you were gonna say that the redwood tree in California is the tallest living tree on the planet.
- 19:15SPEAKER_04: I didn't, I didn't have that's where my that's where my mind went.
- 19:18SPEAKER_07: Well, you know, you're you're fresh off of teaching classes and actually, you know, giving children an education that I do not take part in.
- 19:27SPEAKER_07: I just look at sports stats all day.
- 19:29SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 19:29SPEAKER_07: So all right.
- 19:31SPEAKER_04: But that's bananas, dude.
- 19:33SPEAKER_04: Are you kidding me?
- 19:34SPEAKER_07: This defense is insane.
- 19:37SPEAKER_07: Nine sacks for this defense in this game, led by David Bailey.
- 19:42SPEAKER_07: Again, the second week in a row that he is I he's been dominant all season, but he's really been dominant the last two games.
- 19:49SPEAKER_07: He's uh he led the I think he led the nation again in pressures for this game.
- 19:55SPEAKER_07: He did the same thing last week against Houston.
- 19:58SPEAKER_07: Three sacks from Ella Hyde had two sacks.
- 20:00SPEAKER_07: AJ Holmes, who came in for the injured Skylar Gill Howard, had two sacks.
- 20:04SPEAKER_07: J.
- 20:04SPEAKER_07: Rod had a sack.
- 20:06SPEAKER_07: Terrell Tillman came off the bench and just ended everything at the very end there.
- 20:10SPEAKER_07: Just slammed down Cole Ballard, the backup for Kansas, for a sack.
- 20:14SPEAKER_07: It was incredible to watch.
- 20:18SPEAKER_04: Nine sacks.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 20:21SPEAKER_04: On a guy that can move around as much as Jalen Daniels.
- 20:23SPEAKER_04: That's that's impressive, dude.
- 20:25SPEAKER_04: Like our boys are quick and mean, my man.
- 20:28SPEAKER_04: And it's just this this defense has to be in the running for best in the country.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 20:36SPEAKER_04: We have apparently we have the highest stopping rate in the entire country.
- 20:39SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I mean the the national media is not gonna look at Texas Tech and they're gonna see, they're gonna see the competition, and I'll give them that we had a terrible non-conference, but we've absolutely dominated three decent to good.
- 20:53SPEAKER_07: Utah's about to say Utah's good.
- 20:55SPEAKER_07: Decent to good Big 12 teams.
- 20:57SPEAKER_07: We have not played Oklahoma State, we have not played West Virginia, we have not played UCF, we have not played, you know, like we have played good to middle tier Big 12 teams to start off conference play.
- 21:10SPEAKER_07: And I I just I look at you know, the first thing people are they're gonna see Ohio State and they're gonna see Alabama, and they're gonna see Texas Tech, and they're gonna say one of those doesn't belong.
- 21:22SPEAKER_07: But they've all spent the same amount of money on their team.
- 21:28SPEAKER_07: They've all brought in extremely talented players.
- 21:31SPEAKER_07: The other two just have more uh coaches that have done more.
- 21:35SPEAKER_07: That's really the only thing.
- 21:36SPEAKER_07: That's the only difference right now.
- 21:37SPEAKER_07: Because if you're looking if you're looking at these teams right now on paper, they are equally talented and they are producing at an equal level.
- 21:46SPEAKER_07: Yes, Alabama's played better competition, they've played three straight rank games.
- 21:51SPEAKER_07: Texas Tech has still played a good schedule, like through conference play.
- 21:56SPEAKER_07: The first I'll give you the non conference, it wasn't good.
- 21:58SPEAKER_07: It was horrible.
- 22:00SPEAKER_07: Horrible, actually.
- 22:01SPEAKER_07: Terrible teams, all that jazz.
- 22:04SPEAKER_07: Texas Tech is still beating every team by 24 points.
- 22:06SPEAKER_07: They're dominating every team.
- 22:09SPEAKER_07: I don't know what else we can do besides win 63 to nothing on these teams to really get the credit.
- 22:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I think I think we just gotta keep winning, baby.
- 22:21SPEAKER_04: You know, and we're at number seven in the country right now.
- 22:24SPEAKER_04: It's really hard to complain too much about the situation because we if we could rationally sit here and probably talk about why we understand why those teams are ahead of us right now.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: Um, but I I feel you, dude.
- 22:37SPEAKER_04: It's it's whenever you're looking at the big picture, uh, I think we're, of course, that we just really got to keep our eye on the ball of the Big 12 championship and then talk about this kind of stuff.
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: Because I I keep telling you over and over again, and I know that you don't have as much faith in it, and others other folks may not as well, of if TechStack goes undefeated and wins a Big 12 championship.
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: I just logistically cannot process in my brain how we are not some sort of top four seed.
- 23:06SPEAKER_04: I just can't.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: I just can't, I can't because you're coming, you'd be comparing us up against at minimum one lost teams, if not two lost teams.
- 23:13SPEAKER_04: So it's just I logistically can't fathom a world like they the the the committee would have to be so high on their own supply the that it just for us to not get that bid, if that's what we're worried about.
- 23:27SPEAKER_07: You're telling me right now that if AM and Alabama go undefeated the rest of the way because they don't play each other and they mean the SEC championship and Alabama wins that game, and you have a one-loss AM and a one-loss Alabama, you're saying that both of those schools would not be above Texas Tech right now.
- 23:46SPEAKER_07: I don't know if that's true.
- 23:47SPEAKER_04: That's that's that's probably that's probably the stickiest scenario, huh?
- 23:51SPEAKER_07: Well, I mean, there's a few different sticky situations.
- 23:53SPEAKER_07: Like, you know, Indiana and Ohio State are both in the Big Ten.
- 23:56SPEAKER_07: You know, like that's a very possible situation right now that two Big Ten teams or two SEC teams are going to break into that top four based on resume or whatever you know you want to call it, and could get in over an undefeated Texas Tech.
- 24:12SPEAKER_07: It just it's possible.
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: You're right, it's possible.
- 24:15SPEAKER_04: But I I I think that the um chances are in our favor with that kind of stuff.
- 24:20SPEAKER_07: I mean, I think so too, but we're if Miami goes undefeated all the way, they're not, they're already above you.
- 24:27SPEAKER_07: They're already gonna be, they're gonna stay above you.
- 24:29SPEAKER_07: If Ohio State goes undefeated the rest of the way, they're gonna stay above you.
- 24:33SPEAKER_07: A one-loss Indiana, you know, uh you got and then you got two more SEC teams that people are gonna, you know, go crazy for.
- 24:41SPEAKER_07: So I'm just saying it's not a guarantee if you go undefeated.
- 24:45SPEAKER_07: It's not a guarantee, it's not a guarantee, but it's not, and it's based on the the perception of the conference and all that, all that jazz.
- 24:52SPEAKER_07: So, but like you said, I I don't want to act like I I am a little frustrated because Texas I I go on these podcasts and I'm hoping to hear Texas Tech, and I'm not hearing anything about Texas Tech, which is unfortunate, but it is what it is.
- 25:06SPEAKER_07: Texas Tech is ranked number seven in the AP polls in the land 2008, the last time Texas Tech was ranked this high.
- 25:15SPEAKER_07: Lucky number seven, Texas Tech was ranked number seven during the Crabtree game.
- 25:21SPEAKER_07: I think there's a legitimate argument that we should be above Alabama and Ole Mess right now.
- 25:25SPEAKER_07: I really do.
- 25:26SPEAKER_07: I don't, I I those are the two that I think are dumb, are straight up dumb.
- 25:32SPEAKER_07: That tech is not above.
- 25:33SPEAKER_07: I get that Bama's won three straight ranked games, their wins look better than our wins.
- 25:39SPEAKER_07: I'll give them that.
- 25:40SPEAKER_07: They also lost to a now three loss Florida State team, but we have 17.
- 25:46SPEAKER_07: I I I mean and it was it was a butt kicking.
- 25:50SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean you can't.
- 25:52SPEAKER_07: I I understand that they're a different team, and college footballs are not those those teams are not the same that they were in week one, but I just don't I don't get it.
- 26:01SPEAKER_07: I don't get it.
- 26:02SPEAKER_07: So I I know that they're a good team, and I know that right now I wouldn't even say Texas Tech would beat Alabama right now.
- 26:08SPEAKER_07: I'm just saying they should be ranked higher.
- 26:10SPEAKER_07: We should definitely be ranked higher than Ole Miss.
- 26:12SPEAKER_07: Ole Miss hasn't beat anybody, not named Georgia State or Tulane, by more than seven points.
- 26:20SPEAKER_07: They have played Arkansas, who doesn't have a coach, fired their coach.
- 26:26SPEAKER_07: Bobby Petrino is their interim coach.
- 26:29SPEAKER_07: Welcome to 12.
- 26:31SPEAKER_07: Um Kentucky, who's terrible, who's awful, and Washington State last week, who again not nearly happened.
- 26:42SPEAKER_04: They trailed like the whole game.
- 26:43SPEAKER_07: Didn't North Texas beat Wazoo by like 50 points?
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: A billion points.
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: It was a billion.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: I checked.
- 26:51SPEAKER_07: So both these teams play ranked teams next week.
- 26:53SPEAKER_07: Alabama plays Tennessee and Ole Miss plays Georgia.
- 26:56SPEAKER_07: I think Ole Miss is gonna get exposed against Georgia.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: I would like, we are we gonna bark for Georgia to do that?
- 27:02SPEAKER_04: Or would Georgia does Georgia instantly leap us?
- 27:06SPEAKER_07: See, that would be so shitty.
- 27:10SPEAKER_07: That would just be the worst.
- 27:12SPEAKER_07: Georgia goes and beats Ole Miss and then they hop us because I I don't know.
- 27:17SPEAKER_07: We played a now unranked Arizona State team.
- 27:19SPEAKER_07: Whatever.
- 27:20SPEAKER_07: I'm not even gonna think about that.
- 27:21SPEAKER_07: We should be above both those two teams.
- 27:23SPEAKER_07: I think AM's get a serious argument to be above us, and then obviously the top three teams have been doing insane work this year.
- 27:29SPEAKER_07: So um I'm just I think tech should be five.
- 27:32SPEAKER_07: Whatever.
- 27:33SPEAKER_07: Let's talk about injuries um because they're inevitable with uh quarterbacks at Texas Tech.
- 27:40SPEAKER_07: Unfortunately, Baron Morton goes down again for the third time this year.
- 27:45SPEAKER_07: Um similar, I think he re-aggravated the same injury that he suffered in the first game of the year against Pine Bluff.
- 27:54SPEAKER_07: He was extremely frustrated.
- 27:56SPEAKER_07: We all saw it as soon as he went down.
- 27:57SPEAKER_07: He was pounding his hand on the on the turf.
- 28:00SPEAKER_07: And I don't think, according to Joey, and according to some other people that are way more plugged in than we are, it shouldn't be a long-term thing.
- 28:09SPEAKER_07: And we may see him on Saturday against Arizona State.
- 28:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh, I remember I remember like the time the side the the stadium went silent.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: This this crazy, we didn't even talk about the atmosphere in the stadium.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: It was awesome, by the way.
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: It was great.
- 28:23SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh yeah, you know, he's he's down there on the on the ground, you know, pounding the rock onto the ground.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: But you know, it was kind of funny the whole time we were watching it.
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: It was throughout the entire like first quarter or so.
- 28:33SPEAKER_04: Every time he ran it, we're like, why are you doing that?
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: Why are you doing that, buddy?
- 28:37SPEAKER_04: Don't be doing that, and then it finally came to its inevitable end with him getting injured on the side.
- 28:43SPEAKER_04: Um we were able to see that he came up, got off on his own accord, and didn't like he went to any serious medical uh protocols or anything like that.
- 28:52SPEAKER_04: So um I'm just glad we were playing Kansas one and a half and putting in Will Hammond.
- 28:57SPEAKER_04: We probably had the coolest moment in the whole game when he trucked that Jayhawk into the end zone.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: But dude, it's you know, Barry Morton, he he he fights through a lot, but he might be one of the most brittle dudes on that football field.
- 29:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I'd hate to call him brittle because that's us that's like another term for soft or broken, and it's he's not soft, he's just broken.
- 29:25SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's better than brittle, buddy.
- 29:27SPEAKER_07: He just breaks, he's just like, yeah, brittle, I guess, is a good term.
- 29:31SPEAKER_07: I mean, I can't believe how many times this guy gets hurt.
- 29:35SPEAKER_07: I can't believe it.
- 29:36SPEAKER_07: And it's they can't all just be you got hit wrong.
- 29:42SPEAKER_07: Like this is like six or seven times now in his college career, dude.
- 29:49SPEAKER_07: I we're not doing that either.
- 29:52SPEAKER_07: I hate it for him.
- 29:53SPEAKER_07: I hate it for him because he's a good quarterback.
- 29:56SPEAKER_07: He's um he's clearly a leader on this team in the locker room on the field, everything.
- 30:02SPEAKER_07: He was playing really well against Kansas.
- 30:04SPEAKER_07: He was playing really well the majority of this season when he's on the field.
- 30:08SPEAKER_07: But man, I mean, come on, dude.
- 30:11SPEAKER_07: I know it's at some point, it's just like like how how it's incessant, it's incessant.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: That's the word.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: Incessant.
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: You almost expect it to happen pretty much every game now.
- 30:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, especially anytime you see him take off, it's like, oh boy, here we go.
- 30:29SPEAKER_04: Because it it seems to mostly happen when he tries to make it happen with his legs.
- 30:34SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and and it's yes, it that's the case.
- 30:37SPEAKER_07: It's not like he takes off often, like he's been a pocket quarterback for the most part.
- 30:42SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 30:42SPEAKER_07: I just this is it creates such a wonky situation, and luckily, luckily, we have Will Hammond in the in the at the number two, and even behind him, we have Mitch Christmas, an experienced player.
- 30:54SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Will's the opposite of brittle, he's just gonna ram in everybody and be fine.
- 30:58SPEAKER_07: He will send you airborne, he will into the end zone.
- 31:02SPEAKER_07: He's uh he came in, didn't it was a rough start for him, but then the second half, they just decided, hey, use your legs, man.
- 31:08SPEAKER_07: Like you could run all over this team.
- 31:10SPEAKER_07: Joey said it in the post-game.
- 31:11SPEAKER_07: He's like, sometimes Will just needs to get hit first, and then it finally kind of wakes him up a little bit.
- 31:16SPEAKER_07: But you know, he came into the Utah game and was electric immediately and throughout that entire game, and then uh, you know, it took a little time for Kansas.
- 31:25SPEAKER_07: But um, I I think Will at this point, he's just prepared all the time, and even if we see Baron go out there uh against Arizona State, Will's gonna be ready, and even behind Will, Mitch will be ready.
- 31:38SPEAKER_07: So yeah, for sure.
- 31:39SPEAKER_07: I I that's the reason why they got such a deep quarterback class because you just couldn't rely on the health of Barron Morton this year to his fault, to not his fault.
- 31:49SPEAKER_07: It it just it's it's just a fact at this point.
- 31:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you gotta the dude goes out.
- 31:54SPEAKER_04: It's just the reality of the situation.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: So I hope we're really practicing Will like he has the real possibility to having to start this Saturday.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: I hope that Levich is really planning on a good book to have ready for him to go.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, man, it's it's just it's really frustrating to see your star go down over and over again like that.
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: Sucks.
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: I hate it for Baron.
- 32:14SPEAKER_07: It stinks.
- 32:14SPEAKER_07: You hate it for Barron, but um I his injury doesn't seem to be as severe as what Skylar Gill Howard unfortunately experienced at the very beginning of the game.
- 32:24SPEAKER_04: What's that about?
- 32:25SPEAKER_07: He it they're thinking it's a high ankle sprain.
- 32:28SPEAKER_07: Um, he had to be put in an air cast.
- 32:30SPEAKER_07: I mean, they brought out the uh the the gator for him, and so we were just like, oh man, this is this is not good.
- 32:38SPEAKER_07: And and because the numbers are so big on the jersey, when we were in the stadium, we're like, who is this?
- 32:44SPEAKER_07: He still has his helmet on, you can't really see if it's a zero or an eight.
- 32:48SPEAKER_07: I was trying to distinguish if it was Skylar Gil Howard, if it was Duda Banks, who's number eight.
- 32:53SPEAKER_07: I was like, what is happening here?
- 32:54SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so unfortunately it was Skylar.
- 32:57SPEAKER_07: Got some unfortunate either way.
- 32:59SPEAKER_07: It would have been acting, well, absolutely.
- 33:02SPEAKER_07: Duda's a very strong member of this team who's actually gonna get a lot more work now with Skylar, probably gonna be out for at least a week, if not more.
- 33:11SPEAKER_07: They're being kind of they're not being, you know, too uh out there with the news right now, and I'm sure they don't even know yet.
- 33:17SPEAKER_07: I think Joey's um Joey actually mentioned that he's trying to get him into a specialist in Dallas to really see the severity of it right now.
- 33:25SPEAKER_07: Um, he was in a boot walking on the sidelines in the second half, so but he was walking around, and that's important.
- 33:33SPEAKER_07: His x-rays came back negative, so that's a good thing.
- 33:37SPEAKER_07: I think we're looking at probably like a three to four week injury right now.
- 33:42SPEAKER_07: I don't know, I don't know that for sure.
- 33:45SPEAKER_07: We could potentially even see him against Arizona State if if all goes well with this specialist, but I I would expect Skylar Gillhower to be out for at least a few weeks at this point, and whether that be precautionary or not, you don't want to mess with a high ankle sprain because the the risk for re-injury is uh is pretty high with that type of stuff.
- 34:04SPEAKER_07: And and honestly, you have the depth to make up for it.
- 34:06SPEAKER_07: Skylar's a great player, he's a leader of this team, he's awesome.
- 34:10SPEAKER_07: You want him in that locker room and you want him on the field because he is a terrific player.
- 34:14SPEAKER_07: But this is a position group that you can rely on the backup side because you have what is a fifth starter in AJ Holmes who came in when Skyler got hurt and had a ridiculous game.
- 34:26SPEAKER_07: He was awesome, and he is he's been awesome all year.
- 34:29SPEAKER_07: So I'm not worried from that standpoint.
- 34:32SPEAKER_07: Like I think we're gonna be fine, and even behind AJ, you got other dudes that are playing.
- 34:37SPEAKER_07: So I'm I'm from that perspective, it's fine.
- 34:40SPEAKER_07: I really hate it for Skylar, and I hope he gets back and uh and gets to finish out the season strong.
- 34:45SPEAKER_07: And and we're gonna need him down the stretch for sure.
- 34:47SPEAKER_04: Right, absolutely.
- 34:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it just it just sucks.
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: Uh of course, you know, losing guys like that.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: And this defense has just been humming.
- 34:54SPEAKER_04: So I really hope it doesn't hurt with any sort of that consistency that we've seen.
- 34:58SPEAKER_04: But like you said, you know, you have way too much faith in in that roster in general for it to hold us back.
- 35:04SPEAKER_04: So I mean, I I I hope that it's way less than four weeks, because I mean it's we we gotta we have intense games like Oklahoma State and Stillwater coming up next week.
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: And I probably shouldn't even be joking like that.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: But that's right, I don't want to get some ghost of Gundy that's gonna haunt haunt us in there.
- 35:23SPEAKER_04: Well, maybe I do want the ghost of Gundhi haunting us in there, but yeah, you do.
- 35:26SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, dude, I I I think that this team is too talented at top to bottom for either one of those injuries out of Arizona State for us to take it out take us out of that game.
- 35:36SPEAKER_07: So yeah, I do hate I do hate that we are coming in playing against a good Arizona State team.
- 35:43SPEAKER_07: You're gonna look at that score from last week and you're gonna think, oh my god, this team stinks.
- 35:47SPEAKER_07: They were playing without Sam Levitt.
- 35:49SPEAKER_07: That matters a whole lot because their backup, Jeff Sims, has been a trailblazer of college football.
- 35:54SPEAKER_07: He's in like his seventh year, I think, of eligibility, and he absolutely stinks.
- 36:00SPEAKER_07: So it's a it's a stark difference between Sam Levitt and the number two over there at Arizona State, which uh unfortunately had to go into Rice Eccles and got absolutely jacked up by the Utah Utes.
- 36:15SPEAKER_04: I hate I I hate that Arizona State gave Utah their first Big 12 home game.
- 36:20SPEAKER_04: That was a funny stat.
- 36:21SPEAKER_07: That was funny.
- 36:23SPEAKER_07: That was funny.
- 36:23SPEAKER_07: Utah's good though.
- 36:24SPEAKER_07: That's good for us.
- 36:26SPEAKER_07: That's good for tech that Utah keeps winning.
- 36:28SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 36:29SPEAKER_07: It'll be interesting scene because we're gonna play BYU later in the year, too.
- 36:32SPEAKER_07: I'm interested to see how the Holy War goes.
- 36:34SPEAKER_07: But let's talk about our game coming up this weekend, this Saturday.
- 36:38SPEAKER_07: 3 p.m.
- 36:39SPEAKER_07: kickoff, our time, God's time, central time, but a 1 p.m.
- 36:44SPEAKER_07: local time kickoff over there in Tempe, Arizona at Mountain America Stadium.
- 36:51SPEAKER_07: I I I love Kenny Dillingham.
- 36:54SPEAKER_07: I hate to start it off like this.
- 36:55SPEAKER_07: I watched his presser.
- 36:57SPEAKER_07: I watched I watched his presser.
- 36:58SPEAKER_07: That dude rocks.
- 36:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 37:01SPEAKER_07: Rocks.
- 37:02SPEAKER_07: He is so awesome.
- 37:04SPEAKER_07: He says all the right things.
- 37:05SPEAKER_07: He is a dude's dude, he just loves college football and he loves where he's at too.
- 37:11SPEAKER_07: And he loves Joey.
- 37:13SPEAKER_07: Him and Joey are real tight.
- 37:14SPEAKER_07: I I can't say a bad thing about Kenny Dillingham.
- 37:18SPEAKER_07: That guy loves it.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: No chance.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: He's the he's the most likable coach in the Big 12, probably like across the board.
- 37:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 37:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, I think Joey's obviously a very likable one as well, but I'm sure now that we're so good, people might find him a little grating.
- 37:29SPEAKER_07: But clearly he's not doing enough with the tortillas, clearly.
- 37:33SPEAKER_04: So you gotta do more about the tortillas.
- 37:37SPEAKER_04: What the frick do you want me to do, sir?
- 37:39SPEAKER_04: What do you want me to do?
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: But no, you're absolutely absolutely correct, dude.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: And he's gonna have them boys fired up for us come Saturday, dude.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: Like this is this might be uh, I mean, Utah's probably the toughest game still, even with this one added on there.
- 37:55SPEAKER_04: But this is gonna be it, this is gonna be a test, dude.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: Like, I think this is gonna be the toughest game since Utah, and I think they're being freaking ready for us, and I think that Tippy Stadium's gonna be popping.
- 38:04SPEAKER_04: Like, I think I think it'll be packed, ready to see us take on, they see them their team take on a top 10.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech team, who uh was one of the few teams that managed to get past their awesome team last year, so I'm sure they want some revenge in that sense.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: So, do they have Sam Levitt?
- 38:20SPEAKER_07: They will probably have Sam Levitt about it from everything he practiced today.
- 38:24SPEAKER_07: They showed him at practice, and people that are more plugged in than you or I have speak for yourself are assuming are assuming that Sam Levitt is going to play, and I would assume that too.
- 38:37SPEAKER_07: I he was kind of a mystery out last week.
- 38:40SPEAKER_07: They were coming off a bye week, and then he practiced for a couple days, and then they declared him out for the Utah game.
- 38:46SPEAKER_07: So apparently, according to Kenny Dillingham, he by practice he just kind of threw around a bit.
- 38:53SPEAKER_07: So I don't know.
- 38:54SPEAKER_07: I I I don't know the injury, I think it's a foot thing or maybe a lower leg injury of some sort, but um, this is uh this team is night and day different if Sam Levitt's playing because dude's a ridiculously good quarterback, he can extend plays, he's one of the best quarterbacks in the country of extending plays, and Arizona State just looks like a completely different offense with him on the field.
- 39:17SPEAKER_07: So we saw that last week, and uh that's gonna be the main storyline is the quarterback situation on both sides.
- 39:24SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 39:25SPEAKER_07: Sam Levitt, I think, is more likely to play, but if you get Jeff Sims, I mean that's like eaten for the defensive line here.
- 39:33SPEAKER_07: So that's like friggin' Thanksgiving for the defensive line.
- 39:37SPEAKER_07: But um, I think it's way more 50-50 on if you see Baron Morton or Will Hammond go out there for the first snap for Texas Tech.
- 39:45SPEAKER_07: And I think he can win with either one, but yeah, I think so too.
- 39:49SPEAKER_07: I do think if you get a healthy Baron Morton, you're much more likely to win.
- 39:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 39:53SPEAKER_07: Whether, you know, we haven't seen Will Hammond go through a full game yet.
- 39:58SPEAKER_07: So I think that is worth talking about at least.
- 40:01SPEAKER_07: He's clearly a much different type of quarterback than Baron Morton with the ability to use his legs, but also his accuracy is not quite there yet.
- 40:11SPEAKER_07: He doesn't have quite the arm that Baron has, and he's just not as experienced.
- 40:15SPEAKER_07: So he's more likely to go on the road and make a mistake than Baron Morton is, in my humble opinion.
- 40:21SPEAKER_07: But um, yeah, it'll be interesting.
- 40:23SPEAKER_07: We we don't know, and I think it's going to really come down to like the last second on whether or not Baron Morton actually plays in this game.
- 40:30SPEAKER_07: But um, yeah, it'll be should it'll be fun.
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: Should Joey just do the uh Wittingham, everybody is probably everybody's questionable.
- 40:40SPEAKER_07: Everybody's questionable, everybody's questionable.
- 40:45SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, you say that, but Will obviously has that road dog in him, okay?
- 40:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 40:51SPEAKER_04: The way he was in Riceckles, all right.
- 40:53SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes.
- 40:54SPEAKER_04: That was you know, maybe a crazier environment than Tempi.
- 40:56SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 40:57SPEAKER_04: I've not been to either.
- 40:58SPEAKER_07: I haven't either, but I did watch the TCU Arizona State game, and they got loud in Tempe earlier this year.
- 41:06SPEAKER_07: Uh I guess I'm not gonna look at the Utah game because the Utah game to me is an outlier.
- 41:11SPEAKER_07: If Sam Levin plays, you're not gonna get that same Arizona State team.
- 41:15SPEAKER_07: This year, Arizona State has wins over Northern Arizona, Texas State, Baylor and TCU.
- 41:21SPEAKER_07: Baylor and TCU, by the way, same score.
- 41:25SPEAKER_07: 27-24 on the dot.
- 41:27SPEAKER_07: Tight games, tight games, Arizona State.
- 41:29SPEAKER_07: So, yes, tight games against Baylor and TCU, who we think are like mid to good, you know, that we don't really know.
- 41:37SPEAKER_07: Good offense on Baylor, terrible defense.
- 41:39SPEAKER_07: TCU's a little the same, uh, a little better defense, a little worse offense, you know, sort of deal.
- 41:45SPEAKER_07: So um, you can judge those two games.
- 41:47SPEAKER_07: It was tight for Arizona State on both of them.
- 41:50SPEAKER_07: They did lose to Mississippi State, which if you're looking now, not a good, not a good loss.
- 41:57SPEAKER_07: I know you had to go to Starkville.
- 41:59SPEAKER_07: I know it's a non-con game against an SEC team, but that's still not a good loss.
- 42:03SPEAKER_04: Well, I I didn't get to watch that game for whatever reason, but I I think that Arizona State kind of blew it.
- 42:09SPEAKER_04: They did, they blew it.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: They they gave up state got it.
- 42:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah, they gave up a late time.
- 42:14SPEAKER_07: They should have won that game in Starkville and they and they blew it.
- 42:16SPEAKER_07: But I mean, that's definitely notable for this team.
- 42:19SPEAKER_07: They're yeah, they've been in a lot of close games, and against the we have not.
- 42:25SPEAKER_07: So that could be interesting.
- 42:26SPEAKER_07: They're way more experienced in that department than Texas Tech is.
- 42:30SPEAKER_07: We hope we're not in that position.
- 42:32SPEAKER_07: We hope we keep rolling the way we've been doing, but yeah, um, but yeah, just definitely something to note there.
- 42:38SPEAKER_07: Arizona State's offense kind of lives and dies with Jalen Tyson, their star receiver, who uh brother of Jalen Tyson.
- 42:47SPEAKER_07: Wait, did I say Jordan Tyson?
- 42:48SPEAKER_07: Jordan Tyson's the receiver.
- 42:50SPEAKER_07: Jalen Tyson played at Texas Tech basketball.
- 42:53SPEAKER_07: Uh they're brothers.
- 42:55SPEAKER_07: Fun fact.
- 42:56SPEAKER_07: I think everybody knew that.
- 42:57SPEAKER_07: But Jordan Tyson has been terrific this year.
- 43:01SPEAKER_07: He's been by far one of the best receivers in the game.
- 43:03SPEAKER_07: He's probably gonna be a first or second round pick in the NFL.
- 43:07SPEAKER_07: He's been their go-to.
- 43:08SPEAKER_07: They force feed that ball to Jordan Tyson for him to make plays.
- 43:12SPEAKER_07: So it's gonna be interesting to see the matchup, whether he's matched up with Pollock or uh on the other side with Dante Balfour or Amir Boyd or whoever.
- 43:21SPEAKER_07: It's probably gonna be Pollock for the most part.
- 43:23SPEAKER_07: But uh yeah, that's the guy.
- 43:26SPEAKER_07: If you shut him down, you know, they have other weapons that are pretty decent, but uh, and their run games all right, but it's not like you need to take Jordan Tyson out of this.
- 43:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh the good news is, I mean, with the with whoever we're combating an enemy passing game, we kind of rely on the D line to really put on but squeeze the pressure onto a uh onto the quarterback, which does give some pause for some nervousness.
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: Like you said, that Levin is just so such an extender that maybe we might run into some more issues with that, but it's just hard to doubt our passing.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Pass pressure game to not make him make more mistakes and uh you know lose track of his guys on the field.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: So I feel pretty good about shutting that down, but it does make you nervous, you know, because our the passing game is obviously the weaker of our two defensive sides.
- 44:13SPEAKER_04: You know, we could we you could run the ball on us all day.
- 44:16SPEAKER_04: Like I mean, as in that's our preferred method of stopping you because you will not be able to do it.
- 44:20SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, obviously you're gonna get some lucky ones with the passing game.
- 44:23SPEAKER_04: So it gives you some pause to worry, but thankfully I think we got the horses on the on the line and and the linebackers to make sure that the quarterback has a tough time with it.
- 44:31SPEAKER_07: This is gonna be a huge game for the linebacking core.
- 44:34SPEAKER_07: J.
- 44:34SPEAKER_07: Rod and uh Ben Roberts and John Curry and those types because the pass rush is gonna get there.
- 44:40SPEAKER_07: Sam Levitt's crafty, though.
- 44:41SPEAKER_07: That dude does not go down easy, and even if he's hobbled, I imagine he's still gonna find a way to maneuver his way out.
- 44:47SPEAKER_07: He's made some unbelievable plays this year to do that.
- 44:50SPEAKER_07: But then that next level is where you really need to stop him.
- 44:53SPEAKER_07: So, and I trust obviously Jacob Rodriguez with my life.
- 44:57SPEAKER_07: That dude will do he can deliver Mike Children.
- 45:00SPEAKER_07: He's going to play, he's going to play well.
- 45:02SPEAKER_07: Ben Roberts and those other guys need to play up to par.
- 45:05SPEAKER_07: Uh, not that they haven't been doing that, but they uh they need to do that with a quarterback like Sam Levitt.
- 45:10SPEAKER_07: Texas Tech has shown that they can stop a running quarterback with Devin Dampier.
- 45:14SPEAKER_07: Sam Levitt's a little different.
- 45:15SPEAKER_07: He's not quite a, hey, we're gonna run, we're gonna straight up run run plays for you.
- 45:20SPEAKER_07: He's just more of a crafty pocket, you know, escape the pocket and extend the play type of quarterback.
- 45:25SPEAKER_07: So um he's really terrific, and we're probably gonna see him this week.
- 45:29SPEAKER_07: But I hope the defense is ready for it.
- 45:31SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, dude.
- 45:32SPEAKER_04: They will be.
- 45:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, they've given us no doubt in each game that they're gonna take care of you.
- 45:36SPEAKER_04: They, I mean, they've they've more, I mean, offense has lit it up, don't get me wrong, but they have more or less kept the games in bed each and every time.
- 45:44SPEAKER_04: You know, like they they they've not let the other team even think about more than one chance, you know, that they that they tend to get each game.
- 45:53SPEAKER_04: So they're doing a phenomenal job.
- 45:55SPEAKER_04: That's off the chill wood.
- 45:57SPEAKER_07: Yeah, hyped up, hyped up to see this defense again.
- 46:00SPEAKER_07: It is so much fun watching them week in and week out.
- 46:03SPEAKER_07: David Bailey is a man, a whole man.
- 46:06SPEAKER_07: That dude can do no wrong.
- 46:08SPEAKER_07: All right, buddy.
- 46:10SPEAKER_07: You have anything else on the Arizona State Sun Devils?
- 46:14SPEAKER_04: Do we win, Steven?
- 46:16SPEAKER_07: I think so.
- 46:17SPEAKER_07: I you can't not watch this tech team so far and expect them to lose to Arizona State with a potentially hobbled quarterback, and uh I think you could beat him if he was fully healthy anyway.
- 46:29SPEAKER_07: So even without even without Skyler Gale Howard and even without Barron Morton, which I if you're asking me right now, I think you'll get Barron and you're not gonna get Skyler, but I don't know that for sure, and I would not surprise me if we see Will Hammond out there.
- 46:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely, dude.
- 46:46SPEAKER_04: But we're getting dubs.
- 46:48SPEAKER_07: Dubs all day.
- 46:49SPEAKER_07: Let's keep it rolling to 7-0, please.
- 46:53SPEAKER_07: Texas Tech.
- 46:54SPEAKER_07: All right, buddy.
- 46:56SPEAKER_07: I got nothing else.
- 46:57SPEAKER_07: You want to just end her off here with a song of the week?
- 47:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Steven, I would like to do that.
- 47:02SPEAKER_04: And then when we're 7-0 next week, shoot, I'm gonna knock on um that we're gonna be just keeping this good train rolling, dude.
- 47:09SPEAKER_04: Steven, man, I figure we're gonna throw it back this week.
- 47:12SPEAKER_04: You know, I keep doing these new songs, but I'm gonna I'm gonna go with an oldie but a goodie for this one.
- 47:17SPEAKER_04: Look, if you think Arizona State has a chance in hell at winning this game, I have got oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you, my friend.
- 47:28SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go with the King George, a huge throwback, a goat of the song with ocean front property from the album.
- 47:35SPEAKER_04: Steven, could you tell me?
- 47:36SPEAKER_04: No, ocean front property.
- 47:39SPEAKER_07: Oh, well, there you go.
- 47:41SPEAKER_06: I got some oceanfront property in Arizona.
- 47:49SPEAKER_06: From my front porch, you can see the sea.
- 47:54SPEAKER_07: Very nice choice.
- 47:55SPEAKER_07: Anytime the king is chosen, it's a good choice.
- 47:59SPEAKER_07: So relevance.
- 48:00SPEAKER_07: So I'll let your points I win.
- 48:03SPEAKER_07: No.
- 48:04SPEAKER_07: Uh uh.
- 48:05SPEAKER_07: Hold your horses there, sport.
- 48:08SPEAKER_07: I got two ways to make this relevant here.
- 48:12SPEAKER_07: Because my song of the week, we met them on Thursday night.
- 48:17SPEAKER_07: We got in Thursday night's a Lubbock, Texas.
- 48:20SPEAKER_07: We decided to go out to the Blue Light Live.
- 48:22SPEAKER_07: It is a bar that is very famous, very known for up-and-coming country artists, and even the famous ones come back and say hey every once in a while.
- 48:32SPEAKER_07: We met two of them while we were there.
- 48:35SPEAKER_07: Josh Abbott was there, Cleto Cordero from Flat Lane Calvary were there.
- 48:39SPEAKER_07: We had conversations with both of them, very nice individuals, very fun experience, just all around great time at the Blue Eye Live.
- 48:46SPEAKER_07: It uh it was awesome.
- 48:48SPEAKER_07: My song of the week is from Flat Lane Calvary, who disappointed.
- 48:54SPEAKER_07: We didn't go to the free concert.
- 48:55SPEAKER_07: We were tied up doing all sorts of shenanigans on Broadway and uh didn't make it out, but it these guys were great, they're awesome.
- 49:04SPEAKER_07: My song of the week from them is Mountain Song.
- 49:08SPEAKER_07: And why does this here ties in number two right here?
- 49:12SPEAKER_07: Arizona State plays in Mountain America Stadium.
- 49:16SPEAKER_07: So Mountain Song, Flatland Calvary.
- 49:30SPEAKER_04: Alright, but is that a is that an ode to them or to us?
- 49:37SPEAKER_07: Both?
- 49:38SPEAKER_07: How about I'm making it relevant to last week and relevant to this coming week.
- 49:43SPEAKER_04: So all right, all right, fair, fair.
- 49:45SPEAKER_04: All right, I win.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: Great choice.
- 49:47SPEAKER_04: That song's awesome.
- 49:48SPEAKER_04: It's it's it's one of their best like soft gyms.
- 49:52SPEAKER_07: You know, we're both winners here because we root for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 49:56SPEAKER_04: That's a sentence that was wild to hear, but continue.
- 50:01SPEAKER_07: Also, shout out basketball, number 10 in the AP preseason poll.
- 50:06SPEAKER_07: We're gonna get to some basketball stuff here in the coming weeks.
- 50:10SPEAKER_07: I haven't done my research, I've been locked into football, which usually by this point in the year I'm I'm getting out a little bit.
- 50:16SPEAKER_07: So this is a whole new experience for all of us here.
- 50:20SPEAKER_07: Um, we'll get into more basketball talk as we get in.
- 50:23SPEAKER_07: Very excited for this year's team.
