- 0:08Speaker 1: Well Fridays at the day where we always breathe a
- 0:10Speaker 1: sigh of relief because the week is nearly over. We
- 0:12Speaker 1: get to relax a little bit, hopefully when it comes
- 0:14Speaker 1: to routine. As the weekend arrives. We get to things
- 0:18Speaker 1: cross spend time with our family, our kids, the ones
- 0:20Speaker 1: that we love more than anyone else in the world. Today,
- 0:24Speaker 1: this is doctor Justin Colson. I'm here with my wife
- 0:26Speaker 1: and mother of our six daughters, Kylie, who co hosts
- 0:29Speaker 1: this podcast with me on a day to day basis,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and we love the conversations that we get to have today.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'll Do Better Tomorrow for those of you who are
- 0:37Speaker 1: new to the podcast, and we're so grateful for so
- 0:39Speaker 1: many new people coming along. Our numbers in terms of
- 0:42Speaker 1: podcast listeners have been really increasing substantially in recent times,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and we really appreciate you giving your.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Time to us.
- 0:48Speaker 1: In the mornings every Friday, for our new listeners, we
- 0:52Speaker 1: do this segment called I'll Do Better Tomorrow, where we
- 0:54Speaker 1: reflect on the week that was, share some personal stories
- 0:58Speaker 1: from our own lives, and talk about how we plan
- 1:00Speaker 1: on being more intentional and more mindful as our lives
- 1:05Speaker 1: continue and as we continue to raise our kids day
- 1:06Speaker 1: to day. Today, Kylie's going to go first, and it's
- 1:10Speaker 1: been a really big week for our family and for
- 1:13Speaker 1: some friends of ours who have experienced quite a traumatic
- 1:18Speaker 1: and challenging week. So Kylie's I'll do Better Tomorrow as
- 1:21Speaker 1: a reflection on that. I don't know exactly what Kylie's
- 1:24Speaker 1: going to say, but I know that it's that, and
- 1:26Speaker 1: I guess before we get started with what you want
- 1:28Speaker 1: to share, Kylie, it's probably important that we just highlight
- 1:32Speaker 1: that some of the things that we'll be talking about
- 1:33Speaker 1: in this episode will be of a really sensitive nature
- 1:37Speaker 1: and will make some people feel kind of sad. In fact,
- 1:41Speaker 1: some people will be really very sad by what we
- 1:43Speaker 1: talk about. Nevertheless, we want to be able to have
- 1:46Speaker 1: real and honest conversations about real and honest life. And
- 1:50Speaker 1: so Kylie, why don't you share with us I'll do
- 1:53Speaker 1: Better tomorrow.
- 1:55Speaker 2: So yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a close
- 1:58Speaker 2: family friend's baby's funeral, and they have known for some
- 2:07Speaker 2: time that their baby would probably not survive very long
- 2:11Speaker 2: after birth if she even made the full term pregnancy.
- 2:17Speaker 2: But in spite of all of that knowledge, it has
- 2:21Speaker 2: obviously rocked to their world and for all intents and purposes,
- 2:26Speaker 2: the community that surrounds them. And as I sat there
- 2:33Speaker 2: yesterday and I listened to the beautiful things that were
- 2:36Speaker 2: shared and basically mourned alongside them, it made me think
- 2:42Speaker 2: about our episode yesterday and this acknowledgment that it's all
- 2:48Speaker 2: been worth it. And I thought about the different experiences
- 2:53Speaker 2: that I've had as a mum over the years, and
- 2:55Speaker 2: the times where I've you know, kind of wanted to
- 2:58Speaker 2: throw on the towel because it's all been too high.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And then I thought about my friend and I thought
- 3:04Speaker 2: about the fact that they would actually never have the
- 3:06Speaker 2: opportunity to have any of those experiences, the good, all
- 3:09Speaker 2: the bad, and it really just made me think about
- 3:13Speaker 2: the way I see my children and the things that
- 3:18Speaker 2: are important to me, and I thought about all of
- 3:21Speaker 2: those little moments I thought about, you know, dancing in
- 3:24Speaker 2: the kitchen, the kids singing of Key did Disney songs
- 3:28Speaker 2: on repeat, you know, the kids playing at the beach
- 3:32Speaker 2: for the five minutes where everybody's happy and life just
- 3:37Speaker 2: feels like a bliss. The warm hug. One of our
- 3:41Speaker 2: youngest children would come in each morning and she would
- 3:43Speaker 2: give me a hug and she'd say, oh hot, Mama,
- 3:46Speaker 2: and just the warmth and joy that that filled me with.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Or when I would pick the kids up and they
- 3:53Speaker 2: would notice that I was just a little bit flat,
- 3:56Speaker 2: and for no reason at all, they'd just, you know,
- 3:58Speaker 2: kind of reach out and give me ah that question,
- 4:01Speaker 2: how can I help you, mum? When they notice that
- 4:04Speaker 2: you know, I'm feeling overwhelmed, or when big sisters take
- 4:07Speaker 2: little sisters on dates, or Emily sharing her last lollie.
- 4:12Speaker 2: All of those moments make up this beautiful space where
- 4:14Speaker 2: I can feel absolute gratitude for the opportunity I have
- 4:19Speaker 2: to be a mum. But then there's the not so
- 4:21Speaker 2: pretty times. There's a time where whole bowls of food
- 4:26Speaker 2: end up on heads, or you find your toddler has
- 4:30Speaker 2: flushed something down the blue that they shouldn't have, or
- 4:33Speaker 2: they're eating the dog food, or they've kicked the dog
- 4:35Speaker 2: out of his kennel and they're now sleeping in it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: The times where you know they've used your favorite lipstick
- 4:42Speaker 2: and it's smeared all over the mirror or the carpet
- 4:45Speaker 2: or anywhere where it shouldn't be. I know, there's the
- 4:48Speaker 2: big stuff, the flooding of the house, or the crashed car.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But as I thought about all of those experiences for
- 4:57Speaker 2: a moment, I was able to be grateful for all
- 5:00Speaker 2: of that as well, because it's only because of those
- 5:04Speaker 2: challenging moments that I actually get to truly appreciate the
- 5:09Speaker 2: joyful moments when they occur. It's so hard for us
- 5:13Speaker 2: to recognize just how precious those beautiful moments are if
- 5:18Speaker 2: we haven't had the opposition, if we haven't had a
- 5:23Speaker 2: chance to fill the angs and the anger and the frustration.
- 5:27Speaker 2: It's those times that help us to appreciate the growth
- 5:30Speaker 2: and our children and ourselves as parents. And so as
- 5:34Speaker 2: I sat there yesterday, I was just so grateful for
- 5:37Speaker 2: the opportunity I have to be a mum to these
- 5:40Speaker 2: six amazingly beautiful children who drive me crazy on any
- 5:45Speaker 2: given day and yet provide me with so much opportunity
- 5:49Speaker 2: to learn and grow and to love and to become
- 5:52Speaker 2: a better person. And so I guess my message today
- 5:55Speaker 2: is just hog your kids, and even if it's a
- 6:00Speaker 2: bad day, recognize that tomorrow is a new day. Tomorrow
- 6:06Speaker 2: is a different day, and there will be so many
- 6:10Speaker 2: opportunities to see joy in the coming days, minutes, months, years,
- 6:16Speaker 2: as each of you grow and explore and learn who
- 6:19Speaker 2: you are and what you want to be. I think
- 6:23Speaker 2: that's my message today, Kylie.
- 6:26Speaker 1: How long did they get to hold their baby before
- 6:29Speaker 1: it passed away?
- 6:32Speaker 2: About forty five minutes.
- 6:36Speaker 1: So normally on this podcast I would share an older
- 6:39Speaker 1: better tomorrow moment as well to help us to reflect
- 6:41Speaker 1: and me better. But today I'm not going to do that.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I don't think that there's I don't think that I
- 6:45Speaker 1: could get through it anyway, But I don't think that
- 6:48Speaker 1: there's anything that I could say that would help us
- 6:49Speaker 1: to be better parents tomorrow than what you've shared. So
- 6:55Speaker 1: we might wrap it up there. Hug those kids, love
- 7:00Speaker 1: them for all their worth. I reckon that those friends
- 7:04Speaker 1: of ours would say that the forty five minutes was
- 7:08Speaker 1: worth it. The Happy Famili's podcast is produced by Justin
- 7:12Speaker 1: Ruland from Bridge Media. Craig Bruce is our executive producer.
- 7:17Speaker 1: We'll be back on Monday with more episodes of The
- 7:19Speaker 1: Happy Families podcast. Have a great weekend.
