- 0:27Three we're into tonight and i think this chapter is
- 0:30very appropriate that goes
- 0:33right along with those prefatory remarks from reverend
- 0:36martindale and dr werewell i'd like to go back to chapter two again uh and verse
- 0:4418 just to remind you because i thought about this this week as we We were into
- 0:50our discussions here at International Headquarters.
- 0:56It says the literal according to usage because that word not,
- 1:01you remember, is not in there.
- 1:02And the word intruding was to speculate about.
- 1:06It was used in the mystery religions where they would get into those things
- 1:10that they had seen, their visionary experiences.
- 1:14And I think sometimes people, even in the ministry, they shouldn't.
- 1:19And it happens more so in other parts of Christendom where they base what they
- 1:23believe on experience and on what they see, their visions, rather than on the
- 1:30integrity of God's word.
- 1:32And of course, this verse said, do not allow yourself to be disqualified from
- 1:38the competition and cheated of your reward by those who take pleasure in self-abasement
- 1:46and the bondage of the religious worship of angels.
- 1:51Speculating about their own visionary experiences with vainly inflated carnal egos.
- 1:59If we cannot find in God's Word what we believe, what we confess, then it just isn't true.
- 2:07What we believe has to be found in God's Word. It's the integrity of the word
- 2:14that our ministry is built on, not some visionary experience that I've had or Dr.
- 2:19Werewell or Reverend Martindale or Howard Allen or Don Werewell or someone else.
- 2:25It's the integrity of the word.
- 2:29And yet. From time to time, we'll hear of someone in a leadership position,
- 2:35even who has a certain visionary experience or he's seen this thing by his experiences.
- 2:42And so on, and he tries to put things together, and before you know it,
- 2:47people are way off on tangents.
- 2:49Some things that happened two,
- 2:51three, four years ago are still having thunderings in this day and time,
- 2:57still having effect upon people's lives, because somebody built and spoke and
- 3:03taught something based on their experience rather than on the integrity of the
- 3:07Word. And that verse was...
- 3:10Certainly central to this whole part of Colossians, where they were building
- 3:15what they believed on their experiences, their visionary experiences,
- 3:19so that they worshipped angels or worshipped devil spirits.
- 3:24Gods of various sorts, having different heads, instead of one head holding the
- 3:30head, which is Christ, from whom the whole body is joined together, and so on.
- 3:35And then in 23, these things, which appear to have a word of wisdom,
- 3:41are really self-prescribed religion and a facade of humility and harsh treatment of the body,
- 3:49all of which lack any value as a remedy against carnal indulgence.
- 3:56Now if you want a real remedy against any
- 3:59carnal indulgences it's chapter three if ye then be risen with christ seek those
- 4:06things which are where above and above is put it put for those things which
- 4:13are spiritual as opposed to the things on earth which are carnal of the flesh.
- 4:19Where christ sitteth on or
- 4:22at the right hand of god the right hand of
- 4:25god god doesn't have a right hand so
- 4:28it has to be the figure of speech condescencio and of
- 4:33course it employs that custom of the right hand of honor the right hand of blessing
- 4:38a position of high honor christ is seated at the right hand of god in that position
- 4:44of honor and we're to seek those those things which are above.
- 4:49The word seek is that word used in 1 Corinthians 12, 31 and in 14.1 where it says covet earnestly.
- 5:00It's to covet the best gifts.
- 5:04It's to desire earnestly.
- 5:07So we're to desire earnestly spiritual things, those things which are above.
- 5:12And to be risen with Christ is to be raised together with Him.
- 5:19That's our identification with Christ.
- 5:23And so we translated this verse. Therefore, since you were raised...
- 5:33From the dead, together with Christ, desire earnestly those things which are
- 5:41above where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God.
- 5:47You're raised from the dead together with Christ, then desire earnestly those
- 5:53things which are above, those spiritual things where Christ is sitting at the
- 5:57right hand of God, the hand of blessing.
- 5:59Verse 2 set your affection on things above,
- 6:06to set your affection in both the Greek and the Aramaic it literally means to
- 6:11think think it's related to that word for thoughts in Greek to set your thoughts
- 6:18on or to think things above,
- 6:21spiritual things,
- 6:24not on things where on the earth which would be the carnal things see verse
- 6:31one says we're to desire earnestly spiritual things and in verse two we're to
- 6:37think those things set our thoughts on those things,
- 6:41first you have to seek after it desire it earnestly and then secondly think it,
- 6:48you'll learn about it from desiring and then
- 6:51you think those thoughts not things on the earth for in verse 3 gives the reason
- 6:58for you are dead you died and your life is hid or has been hidden with christ
- 7:06in god and that again is a part of our um.
- 7:12Our identification with Christ.
- 7:16In chapter 2, thinking about this,
- 7:20verse 10 that we had last week, or a couple weeks ago, And you are absolutely
- 7:28complete in Him who is the head of all principality and power.
- 7:33You were circumcised in Him by the non-physical circumcision,
- 7:39by stripping off the sin nature by the circumcision
- 7:42of christ this is all a part of our identification with
- 7:46christ which is what made us complete in
- 7:49christ you were buried with him in baptism with whom you were also raised by
- 7:56believing in the energizing power of god who raised him from among the dead
- 8:01when you were dead in sins in the uncircumcision of your flesh he made you alive together with him,
- 8:12And then in verse 20 that we covered last week.
- 8:27Don't touch, don't taste, don't handle. You see, all of that's a part of our
- 8:33identification, which really takes you back to the book of Romans.
- 8:36When we were buried with christ
- 8:39we died with him we're buried with him we were raised with
- 8:42him so we've got everything we need you
- 8:45don't need those carnal ordinances yet they
- 8:48were setting their affections somebody there was setting their affections on
- 8:52things on the earth the carnal ordinances they were looking into angels and
- 8:59making different heads instead of having the one head who is christ and setting
- 9:03their affection on spiritual things well anyway.
- 9:09That gives the reason for setting your thoughts on things above.
- 9:14Because you're dead. Your life has been hid with Christ.
- 9:18And when Christ, who is our life, Christ is our life, when He shall appear,
- 9:26and to appear is to be made manifest or revealed.
- 9:30It's the opposite of being hidden.
- 9:34So when Christ, who is our life, appears
- 9:39right now our life is hidden with christ
- 9:42but when he appears then shall ye also appear or be revealed with him in glory
- 9:49that's the end of the hiding so we translated verses two three and four set
- 9:57your thoughts on things above not on things of the earth,
- 10:03For you died and your life has been hidden with Christ in God.
- 10:09When Christ, your life, shall be revealed, then you also shall be revealed with him in glory.
- 10:19Then verse 5. Mortify therefore.
- 10:25The word mortify means to put to death. It's a figure of speech.
- 10:32Metonymy, where one word is put for another one remotely associated with it.
- 10:39Metonymy, mortified to put to death, is put for removing it from you, removed from you.
- 10:49Your members, the word your is omitted in some of the Greek manuscripts and texts.
- 10:59If you are a faithful believer and this is addressed to the faithful in Christ,
- 11:04then you shouldn't be practicing the things that are in this verse.
- 11:08You might be off in verse 8, but if you're faithful, you're certainly not into these verses.
- 11:14The things that are in these verses.
- 11:18So you put off or remove, put to death,
- 11:23is like I said, metonymy, those members which are upon the earth,
- 11:28the carnal members those members of
- 11:31the body who were introducing this air that
- 11:34we read about back in colossians chapter 2
- 11:37like in verse 4 list this
- 11:40i say lest any man should beguile you with enticing
- 11:44words there were those that were beguiling them with enticing words and again
- 11:51in verse 8 beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit
- 11:56after the tradition of men after the rudiments of the world and not after christ and in verse 16,
- 12:04let no man therefore judge you in meat or in drink or in respect of a holy day
- 12:09or the new moon or the sabbath days which are a shadow of things to come but
- 12:15the body is of christ see all the way through And then let no man beguile you or cheat you.
- 12:24Get disqualified from the competition. That tremendous verse we read.
- 12:29Because verse 19, they don't hold the head.
- 12:33In 1 Corinthians chapter 5.
- 12:38At Corinth, there were men and women practicing error.
- 12:43They were introducing things that were contrary to the Word of God.
- 12:48In Galatia, that area, you had this problem. Only it was a doctrinal issue.
- 12:55See, in Philippi, you know, you had some problems because of those that were
- 12:59introducing error from outside the body or some might have been inside the body,
- 13:04but they just weren't walking right.
- 13:06Well, in Corinthians, in chapter 5, verse 5, it says about some of these,
- 13:15to deliver such an one unto whom?
- 13:18Satan, for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit might be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
- 13:26And in verse 11, it says it very clearly, Now I have written unto you not to keep company.
- 13:33Company that's how you cut them out of the fellowship mortify them deliver them to satan,
- 13:42uh not keep company if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator covetous
- 13:48or idolater or railer or drunkard or extortioner with such in one no not to
- 13:54eat and at verse 13 but them that are without God judges.
- 14:01Put away from among you yourselves that wicked person. What do you do with them?
- 14:07Put them away from among you.
- 14:09Not to keep company with those.
- 14:12And in 2 Thessalonians 3, verse 6, Now we command you, brothers,
- 14:20in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourself.
- 14:26What does it mean to withdraw, remove,
- 14:29pull out from, not to keep company with, withdraw from every brother that walketh
- 14:36disorderly and not after the tradition which he received of us?
- 14:45To drink limit. Few other things. Pertaining to the earth. Worldly carnal things.
- 14:53Well look at verse 14. And if any man obey not our word.
- 14:58By this epistle. Note that man.
- 15:03And have no company with him. That he may be ashamed.
- 15:07Yet count him not as a what? Enemy. But admonish him as a what?
- 15:12And yet it says don't have any company with.
- 15:171 Timothy chapter 1.
- 15:23And there are times when you have to draw that line where it's just not the
- 15:29best and not beneficial to have company with certain people because they'll pull you down.
- 15:37Tells us in Galatians to help one another but not to the end that they've dragged you down.
- 15:43You don't want to get pulled in, sucked in by their thing.
- 15:461 Timothy 1, verse 20, Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander? These are those that
- 15:52have made shipwreck out of faith.
- 15:55Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered unto Satan that they learn not to blaspheme.
- 16:02Philippians 3. These are rather pointed verses, verses, but it's sometimes necessary.
- 16:12Philippians 3, verse 18.
- 16:16For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping,
- 16:24that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ.
- 16:30Whose end is destruction, whose
- 16:32God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind what?
- 16:38Earthly things. Of course, we covered this in Philippians.
- 16:41But look, even in a tremendous epistle like Philippians, where they were faithful in Christ Jesus,
- 16:48yet he brings to their attention those that were in the fellowship that were
- 16:53serving their own bellies, serving themselves.
- 16:57That's where their God was. see they gloried
- 17:00in their own shame minding carnal
- 17:04earthly thing so in Colossians
- 17:07it tells you again very pointedly kill them
- 17:10that doesn't literally mean to kill people
- 17:14in the body that's why we didn't translate it that way but it's a figure to
- 17:24mortify to put them to death not literally but metonymy meaning you remove them.
- 17:30Look at how it's said it in Corinthians.
- 17:32Deliver to Satan for the destruction of the flesh.
- 17:35See? When you're cut out of the fellowship, you don't have fellowship with believers.
- 17:40You've got a hard time living.
- 17:43That's right. Very difficult. Your source of fellowship and life, the Word.
- 17:53Mortify. Remove. See? Therefore, your members, or the members,
- 17:58not yours, the members which are upon the earth, those that are carnal.
- 18:05They're carnal members who practice these things. Fornication.
- 18:12Fornication is spiritual fornication.
- 18:17Idolatry.
- 18:18Uncleanness is the opposite of purity.
- 18:23And it's used biblically of all forms of sexual perversion. including homosexuality.
- 18:32And of course it ties into idolatry, uncleanness in idolatry,
- 18:38and in possession, like devil spirits.
- 18:41It calls them unclean spirits.
- 18:45That's this word. So uncleanness is very descriptive of idolatry and all the
- 18:51perversion that goes with it.
- 18:54Inordinate affection. Perfection. The Aramaic word here means pain, grief.
- 19:05Or passion.
- 19:07The Greek word is a feeling which the mind suffers, the emotion.
- 19:18And it's related to things that the sufferings which accompany idolatrous practices,
- 19:27like a hangover or drug addiction.
- 19:31Those are sufferings consequences that are the result of using those things
- 19:38told you this was very timely to the preparatory remarks here this evening,
- 19:46basically it's uncontrollable cravings actions and the suffering that results from it.
- 19:58We translated it intemperate intemperate cravings then evil concupiscence evil
- 20:09is that word that means destructive evil it,
- 20:15exemplifies or amplifies the destructive nature of evil and concupiscence is
- 20:22an intense passion or craving a lust as for other gods and all the practices that go with it.
- 20:33So it's the destructive evil desires that they have.
- 20:39Because when you get into idolatry and into the drugs and the alcohol and the
- 20:46other things that go with it, and you start serving other gods,
- 20:50then it leads to more and more things of a destructive nature.
- 20:55The sexual practices, for example, the things you just seldom heard about or
- 21:02maybe never heard about back in the 60s, all of a sudden, it's running rampant.
- 21:08Masochism and a lot of other things because they just want more and more of a destructive nature.
- 21:15And then covetousness just means more and more.
- 21:19It's that greedy desire for more and more and more gods. Trinity.
- 21:28Then it says, which is idolatry?
- 21:33All those things are idolatry and practices of idolatry.
- 21:45For which things sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.
- 21:54Some of the manuscripts omit children of disobedience. If you leave it out,
- 22:00it doesn't make much sense.
- 22:01For which things sake the wrath of God comes.
- 22:06It's because it comes on the children of disobedience, not the believer.
- 22:11Although some believers fall into the practice of these things and they shouldn't
- 22:16but when they do you mortify it.
- 22:22That's why you need that phrase on the children of disobedience because those
- 22:25are the sons of the devil those born of the wrong seed the wrath of God will
- 22:32come on them in the future that's why this word comes which is present tense
- 22:38has to be a figure of speech,
- 22:41heterosis, H-E-T-E-R-O-S-I-S.
- 22:46Where the present is put for the future.
- 22:50The wrath of God is coming in the future on the children of disobedience, the sons of the devil.
- 23:03We translated these two verses five and three verses,
- 23:10now seven really ties into to six,
- 23:15in the which it's among whom it's masculine it can be masculine or neuter but
- 23:23it has to be masculine referring to those sons of disobedience among whom You
- 23:29also walked sometime when you lived among them.
- 23:34See, there was a time in the past you walked among those sons of disobedience.
- 23:40That comes to mind that verse in Proverbs that Reverend Martindale has covered
- 23:45that shows how those sons of Belial that are the ones who manipulate the society,
- 23:53they control the business dealings and so on that are going on.
- 23:57And you went right along with them.
- 24:00You were manipulating them by them like everybody else is.
- 24:05Then the word lived among them.
- 24:09The word lived is in the Aramaic had your dealings, to have your dealings like
- 24:17your business dealings.
- 24:22It ties very nicely into Proverbs 6. Now, look at the literal according to usage.
- 24:30Therefore, in verse 5, remove the carnal members who practice spiritual fornication,
- 24:37impurity, intemperate cravings, destructively evil passions and greedy desire,
- 24:44which are idolatrous practices.
- 24:47Because of these things, the wrath of God will come on the sons of disobedience
- 24:53among whom you also walked formerly when you had your dealings among them.
- 25:01I think it ties a very descriptive picture of how those sons of disobedience
- 25:06again manipulated the world and you had your dealings among them in time past.
- 25:12You were controlled. You were a part of the system,
- 25:16the culture and so on but not anymore and yet there are some believers who are
- 25:24being sucked in by that and when they are it says mortify them,
- 25:30remove them from among you I want you to look at Ephesians chapter 5,
- 25:40you can follow along there But what I want to read to you is Dr.
- 25:49Irwell's literal according to usage of verses 3 through 6.
- 25:56Because it's very close to this here in Colossians.
- 26:01But spiritual fornication and every impurity and also greed will surely not
- 26:09be named among you as becoming to saints,
- 26:14nor profanity nor senseless talk nor nonsensical fun which is unnecessary but instead thanksgiving,
- 26:26in the expanded of that verse he
- 26:29says to do something making him god a
- 26:32laughingstock which is literally the greatness
- 26:35of that verse five for you
- 26:38know that no idol worshiper nor unclean person
- 26:42nor defrauder who is an idolater has
- 26:45any inheritance in the kingdom of God
- 26:48no inheritance for those that are practicing those things for those born of
- 26:55the devil will terrify you by words devoid of truth and because of these men
- 27:02comes the wrath of God down upon upon the sons of disobedience.
- 27:08And see, those that fall back into that idolatry error, there is no reward for them.
- 27:14They're cutting their own spiritual throat, so to speak.
- 27:21Back to Colossians.
- 27:25See how that's what this is built on.
- 27:28This is correcting the error that crept into Colossae because they didn't adhere
- 27:34to the revelation that's given in the book of Ephesians.
- 27:37And it was doctrinal error because they were not holding Christ as the head.
- 27:41When you don't hold Christ as the head, you've got to get into idolatry,
- 27:45which means worshiping other gods and all the shenanigans that go with it.
- 27:49Namely inordinate affection and all these other things intemperate cravings
- 27:56destructively evil passions greedy desire,
- 28:01and you formerly had your dealings among those sons of disobedience that cause
- 28:07all these things now verse 8.
- 28:11But now but now here's what you as the believer must do,
- 28:17if you're going to continue and maintain that spiritual unity,
- 28:23unity of the Spirit in the one body with Christ as the head of that one body.
- 28:30You also, the word also is omitted in the Aramaic. Put off.
- 28:36To put off is to lay aside or to put away.
- 28:41All these.
- 28:44Anger. that's the
- 28:48greek word or gay o-r-g long
- 28:51e and it means venom
- 28:55or an indignation that arises gradually and becomes more settled or long lasting
- 29:04it's a an anger that just you know it gets to you and it grows and it grows
- 29:09and pretty soon you're really teed off and you hold on to it forever. It's a venomous anger.
- 29:16And wrath is thumos in Greek. T-H-U-M-O-S.
- 29:24That's the kind of anger that boils up quickly and then subsides again.
- 29:29It's where you get, you know, it's your emotions getting in the way where you
- 29:32just, somebody says or does something and all of a sudden you boil up and you're
- 29:37ready to clobber them over the head.
- 29:38But then you cool off again well those are a couple things to put away both
- 29:46the venomous anger and that short term anger.
- 29:55An impulsive anger, as we call it.
- 30:00And malice. That's the word that means evil and it emphasizes the destructive nature of evil.
- 30:08In other words, a destructive evil with the intent to hurt.
- 30:15Blasphemy is evil speaking.
- 30:20Any type of blasphemous speech or evil speaking.
- 30:25Filthy communication out of your mouth. That's profane words or filthy abrasive
- 30:34language out of your mouth.
- 30:38Again, a lot of these things you read here, you find the great doctrine back
- 30:43in the book of Ephesians.
- 30:46This one, of course, in 429. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your
- 30:51mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace under the ears.
- 30:57See, anything that tears down, doesn't build up, would be in that category, profane words.
- 31:06So, we translated that verse. But now, put away all these things.
- 31:12Venomous anger, impulsive anger,
- 31:15hurtful evil. See, you don't want to be hurtful to someone in the body.
- 31:20And, you know, you don't want to have this type of anger Anger where,
- 31:24boy, you get ticked off at somebody and then the next day you just sort of incubate it.
- 31:29And then two weeks later, you're still in. And, you know, it just goes on and on.
- 31:34Or your impulsive anger, you know, those things happen, too.
- 31:43The difference between that and spiritual anger, because God gets angry too
- 31:48sometimes. But that's when something's not according to the Word.
- 31:52Usually what happens in the body, it's personality things.
- 31:57You get angry about somebody leaving their socks on the floor. Hurtful evil.
- 32:05When you get angry at somebody, you don't like something, then the next thing
- 32:11you want to do is destroy.
- 32:14Blasphemous speech, profane words out of your mouth, anything that tears down, doesn't edify.
- 32:22Then verse 9, lie not one to another, seeing you have put off the old man with his deeds.
- 32:30The word put off means to take off like you're clothed, to unclothe.
- 32:37That's the word put off. You unclothe yourself of that old man.
- 32:43Now old man is a figure of speech hypokatastasis that you've had before where
- 32:49you have an implied comparison you're comparing,
- 32:54your carnal fleshly walk the deeds of the old man or deeds of the flesh with
- 33:01an old man that's the comparison it's an implied comparison.
- 33:08With his deeds now Now, it can mean deeds or acts in Greek.
- 33:16However, the Aramaic word, hupaka, H-U-P-A-K-A, means conduct or manner of life.
- 33:27And it's real interesting because it's related to that word that I told you
- 33:33was dealings up in verse 7.
- 33:36When you had your dealings among them. Remember that?
- 33:41You had your dealings among the sons of disobedience.
- 33:46Well, where does the old man get his dealings from?
- 33:49From God? No. From the world, which ultimately comes from the devil and his hordes.
- 34:00So you're to put off that old man with his dealings, his conduct,
- 34:07his manner of life, his associations with the world.
- 34:12And have put on the new man.
- 34:16Now man is supplied there by ellipsis. It's the figure ellipsis because it's
- 34:20not there, but it's talking about the new what?
- 34:22Fingernails? No, the new man.
- 34:25See, you get that from the previous verse.
- 34:28Put off the old man. Put on the new what?
- 34:32Man. Which is renewed.
- 34:36Of course, that's the word used in Romans 10 too where you renew your mind.
- 34:41But that new man is renewed in knowledge.
- 34:46Gnosis? No.
- 34:50It's epigenosis. E-P-I-G-N-O-S-I-S.
- 34:57Epigenosis. That full, exact, complete knowledge.
- 35:02Not just knowledge, but that new man is renewed in the full,
- 35:07exact, complete knowledge.
- 35:09The knowledge of the mystery. Everything you need.
- 35:17After the image of him that created it.
- 35:26Renewed after God. It's a great principle. God's Spirit teaches His creation
- 35:31in you, which is now your spirit, and then it becomes manifest in the sense of the world as you act.
- 35:36Okay, there it is in verse 10. So we translated 9 and 10 on your sheets.
- 35:43Do not lie to one another, but put off the old man with his conduct and put on the new man,
- 35:52which is renewed in perfect knowledge after the image of its creator.
- 36:00Music.
