Latest / The MeatEater Podcast / Ep. 396: Game On, Suckers! MeatEater Trivia XXXVIII
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game
- 0:12Speaker 1: show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, spent in
- 0:15Speaker 1: New Art, and today we're joined by Janice Patellis, Alyssas Smith,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Corey Caulkins, Garrett Long, Hayden Samic, Seth Morris, and Carl Hansen. Now, Carl,
- 0:24Speaker 1: this is your first time on the show. Telephone what
- 0:28Speaker 1: you do here? Meat Eater already got some applause in
- 0:30Speaker 1: the room. Yeah, like one. That's pretty good. It's pretty good.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I am the gear and media coordinator. What's about as
- 0:37Speaker 1: exciting as it sounds, basically the stay at home dad
- 0:39Speaker 1: for our camera equipment. So I take care of it.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I fix it when it breaks, which is all the
- 0:45Speaker 1: freaking time, Yeah, and then send it back out on
- 0:47Speaker 1: the road. And when something goes missing is that are
- 0:50Speaker 1: you the one who finds it or are you the
- 0:52Speaker 1: one who lost it? No, I'm the one who accuses
- 0:54Speaker 1: people of taking it, like I did with Hayden just yesterday,
- 0:58Speaker 1: very public people slack come on in front of eight people,
- 1:04Speaker 1: who's the prime making it sound like I gathered everyone
- 1:06Speaker 1: up outside with pitchforks and torches? Which, yeah, do we
- 1:11Speaker 1: ever solve that? I still think it was set. He
- 1:13Speaker 1: lost one. I want to say, Carl has a job
- 1:15Speaker 1: that no one kind of sees what's going on, um,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and no one appreciates what he does because no one
- 1:22Speaker 1: sees it. But it's like it sounds like the perfect
- 1:24Speaker 1: opportunity to steal as a camera guy that breaks camera gear. UM,
- 1:30Speaker 1: Carl's the st Louise Carl. If you're not familiar, this
- 1:37Speaker 1: is a ten round quiz show with questions from meat
- 1:40Speaker 1: eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking.
- 1:44Speaker 1: There is a prize. Meat eater will donate five hundred
- 1:46Speaker 1: dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing and
- 1:50Speaker 1: each week you're on Trivia, we reveal a new stat
- 1:53Speaker 1: This week, we're looking at performance in the cooking category.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Our top three performers are Stephen Nella, who gets sixty
- 2:01Speaker 1: five percent of cooking questions right, Janice pateell Us, who
- 2:04Speaker 1: gets sixty four percent, and Brodie Henderson, who gets sixty one.
- 2:09Speaker 1: How do you feel about that? Yanni puts a smile
- 2:11Speaker 1: on my face, one percentage point away from being at
- 2:14Speaker 1: the top. I know because you care about details like this,
- 2:18Speaker 1: But the last name is pooh tell us? Do I
- 2:21Speaker 1: mess that up? Every time? It's just kind of a short.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It's almost e sounding, and like, if you really want
- 2:26Speaker 1: to nail it, you have to make sure that it's
- 2:27Speaker 1: a long using am I saying like put tell us? Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 1: okay tell us, like poop poop tell us. That's what
- 2:36Speaker 1: they used to say in fourth grade? Is it really
- 2:37Speaker 1: what they used to say? It is exactly what the
- 2:43Speaker 1: carl how many out of ten questions? How many you're
- 2:45Speaker 1: gonna get right today? I'd be happy with a strong tube? Okay, yeah, okay,
- 2:49Speaker 1: bars Low. That's I mean, if you're doing if you're
- 2:52Speaker 1: firing at six on cooking questions like yeah, I don't
- 2:56Speaker 1: know if I can get so. Back to the cook
- 3:00Speaker 1: in category are bottom three performers when it comes to
- 3:03Speaker 1: cooking are Clay Nucom who gets thirty, Mark Kenyon, who
- 3:07Speaker 1: gets and Rick Hutton, who has yet to get a
- 3:11Speaker 1: cooking It's amazing. Rick has put up one of the
- 3:17Speaker 1: most interesting performances in meat eat or trivia that I've seen.
- 3:21Speaker 1: When it comes to cooking and fishing, I think cooking
- 3:24Speaker 1: he's batting zero percent. Fishing is like, but then hunting
- 3:28Speaker 1: and conservation is if meat eater are every eliminated half
- 3:32Speaker 1: of its verticals. Uh Rick would run the whole show
- 3:35Speaker 1: instead of Steve because he knows so dang much about
- 3:37Speaker 1: hunting and conservation domination. I think I know pretty well.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I feel like that's very accurate. That's reflective. Not much
- 3:46Speaker 1: of an angler or a cook, but knows everything there
- 3:49Speaker 1: is to know about conservation, conservation, hunting rifles. Yeah, have
- 3:55Speaker 1: you ever caught him just like eating dry pasta, just
- 3:57Speaker 1: like chomping it down, just like, oh, yeah, that checks out.
- 4:01Speaker 1: We have some housekeeping to get to. In a previous
- 4:04Speaker 1: game of trivia, we talked about the legendary bow Whoop shotgun.
- 4:08Speaker 1: The gun got its name from the distinct noise it
- 4:10Speaker 1: made when fired. Brody asked why it sounded different than
- 4:14Speaker 1: any other water fouling shotgun, and we finally got our answer.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Rick Henley from Rock Island Auction wrote in to say
- 4:20Speaker 1: that the bow Whoop was an h super fox shotgun.
- 4:24Speaker 1: It was one of the first shotguns in the world
- 4:26Speaker 1: to use three inch magnum shells during a time when
- 4:29Speaker 1: two and three quarter in shells were the norm. Nash Buckingham,
- 4:33Speaker 1: who owned the Bow Whoop, was one of the first
- 4:35Speaker 1: people to test these new overboard barrels and bigger shells,
- 4:39Speaker 1: So essentially, the bo whoops distinct noise came from the
- 4:42Speaker 1: fact that it was using longer shells than every other
- 4:45Speaker 1: duck gun in America. The bo Whoop is currently owned
- 4:48Speaker 1: by Ducks Unlimited. They took it hunting in and got
- 4:52Speaker 1: some of the only footage ever of the bo Whoop
- 4:55Speaker 1: being fired. Play the clip, Phil, Now, that might not
- 5:11Speaker 1: have sounded as is impressive as you hoped, but in
- 5:14Speaker 1: the nineteen thirties that gun was audibly one of a kind.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Rick said, it's the equivalent of when you're duck hunting
- 5:19Speaker 1: today and you can tell who on the lake is
- 5:22Speaker 1: shooting three and a half in shells versus three inch shells.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Do that answer your your question, Yanni, about how the
- 5:29Speaker 1: bow whoop sounded? Was that my question? It was Brodie's question,
- 5:33Speaker 1: But I could tell you were wondering it. No, but
- 5:36Speaker 1: that does bring back fond memories. I like the same
- 5:38Speaker 1: thing in Wisconsin, like on opening day a rifle season,
- 5:41Speaker 1: when you're just listening to all the distant rifle shots
- 5:43Speaker 1: and you're always getting You're like, oh, that was probably
- 5:45Speaker 1: like a you know, a little six five, you know,
- 5:48Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden somewhere a cannon goes off,
- 5:50Speaker 1: and you're like, what does that guy doing shooting deer
- 5:53Speaker 1: with that thing? Same thing? Like like Rick said, three
- 5:57Speaker 1: and a half in shells versus three inch shells in
- 5:59Speaker 1: TWE twenty two. That's why the bow whoops sounded so
- 6:02Speaker 1: special in the nine thirties. Now they shall be index.
- 6:05Speaker 1: For today's game of trivia is a three point five.
- 6:08Speaker 1: So our winner, she should get about seven correct answers.
- 6:11Speaker 1: So did you give her a half point? Or did
- 6:13Speaker 1: she give herself half? You know, she usually rewards herself
- 6:16Speaker 1: half points, and I have to do so much arguing
- 6:18Speaker 1: with our trivia players in the room that I just
- 6:20Speaker 1: don't bother to argue with her. So if she rewards
- 6:23Speaker 1: herself a half point, she gets a half point. Now
- 6:25Speaker 1: I shall be index. Last time I played did not
- 6:28Speaker 1: hold true, because I believe that I only had one
- 6:31Speaker 1: more than she did to win the game. That was
- 6:33Speaker 1: the most off. It spanned three and a half. Today
- 6:35Speaker 1: fields right, I think somebody in this room has seven
- 6:38Speaker 1: correct answers in them. With that word, on to the
- 6:41Speaker 1: game of trivia, play the drop fill. Look, I need
- 6:47Speaker 1: to know what I stay under, win everything? How just
- 6:52Speaker 1: tend to win everything? Gavon Suckers. Question one. The topic
- 7:04Speaker 1: is haunting and as always, this will be multiple choice.
- 7:08Speaker 1: What Canadian pop star was the target of aften change
- 7:12Speaker 1: dot org petition that demanded she stopped hunting? Was it
- 7:16Speaker 1: Lady Gaga, Avril Levine, Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift? What
- 7:24Speaker 1: Canadian pop star was the target of a twenty fifteen
- 7:28Speaker 1: change dot org petition that demanded she stopped hunting? Your
- 7:33Speaker 1: four choices our Lady Gaga, Avril Levine, Miley Cyrus or
- 7:38Speaker 1: Taylor Swift. Anybody know this? I think I didn't know
- 7:45Speaker 1: they were Canadians. Carl, you're you're a pop music fan.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna are all the artists you mentioned? Are they
- 7:56Speaker 1: all Canadian? I'm not going to give any details. The
- 7:59Speaker 1: question is what Canadian pop star was the target of
- 8:02Speaker 1: a change dot org condition that demanded she stopped haunting?
- 8:06Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Would that? Would that help you? Yanni?
- 8:11Speaker 1: If I said yes or no? Yeah, I think so.
- 8:14Speaker 1: The choice Your choices are Lady Gaga, Avriel, Levine, Miley Cyrus,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and Taylor Swift. Seth all right, I could I could drop?
- 8:26Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? But Spencer gets really mad
- 8:28Speaker 1: when I do so angry, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 8:31Speaker 1: We have Hayden saying Avril, Garrett saying t Swift, Corey's
- 8:36Speaker 1: saying Avril Levine, Alyssa saying Avril Levine, Seth saying Lady Gaga,
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yanna saying Avril Levine, and Carl saying Taylor Swift. Lady
- 8:45Speaker 1: Gaga famously wore meat dress. The correct answer is Avril Levine.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And yes, Yanny, she is the only Canadian from your choices,
- 8:54Speaker 1: respect Phil, I don't know who that is. You're like primate. No,
- 8:59Speaker 1: Avril are complicated. You have to go make th qu
- 9:11Speaker 1: Hunting her dad and brother and is listed. It is
- 9:15Speaker 1: one of her favorite pastimes. The change dot org petition
- 9:18Speaker 1: that demanded she stopped hunting Garner just over one thousand signatures.
- 9:23Speaker 1: The last person to sign it was Jamie Tanner, who
- 9:26Speaker 1: said his reason for supporting the petition is because, quote,
- 9:29Speaker 1: she's a stupid, ugly whore. Okay, there you go. Maybe
- 9:34Speaker 1: that's why I don't know. We should get her on
- 9:36Speaker 1: the podcast Fun Putin and Funk. Jamie and Yes, as
- 9:42Speaker 1: Hayden pointed out, Lady Gaga is a big fan of
- 9:45Speaker 1: Peter and once wore the meat dress too. I don't
- 9:48Speaker 1: know what that was the Oscars the first time. Miley
- 9:52Speaker 1: Cyrus is also quite anti hunting. Taylor Swift, I don't
- 9:55Speaker 1: know about her background, everl Levine is a correct answer
- 9:59Speaker 1: question too. The topic is fishing. This is our work
- 10:03Speaker 1: Sharp listener question in the Week, which was won by
- 10:05Speaker 1: Josh Eastwood for sending this great question. Josh is going
- 10:09Speaker 1: to get a work Sharp care package that includes three
- 10:12Speaker 1: of our favorite knife sharpeners. If you want a chance
- 10:14Speaker 1: to win the listener question in the Week, then send
- 10:16Speaker 1: your question to Trivia at the meat eater dot com.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Six states combined to form the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Name
- 10:25Speaker 1: three of those states? Six states combined to form the
- 10:33Speaker 1: Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Name three of those states? Phil What
- 10:38Speaker 1: have you gotten that last question? Right? Yeah? Because I
- 10:41Speaker 1: knew she was the only Canadian. Good do you know
- 10:44Speaker 1: like specifically where the other three artists hail from? Uh? No,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I mean Taylor Swift claim, but she's from Pennsylvania, Miley
- 10:53Speaker 1: Cyrus is Tennessee, and uh, lady guys in New York.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Good on I had to google, though, saying, so you
- 11:00Speaker 1: just know them organically. It's sad, thank you question to again.
- 11:05Speaker 1: It's six stits combined to form the chance to Peak
- 11:07Speaker 1: Bay Watershed named three of those states. I hate East
- 11:11Speaker 1: Coast geography. I like it because it kind of plays
- 11:15Speaker 1: in three or two three of the six states. Carl
- 11:19Speaker 1: only right down three. If you write down four, you
- 11:21Speaker 1: get it wrong. Three of the states circle three. I'm
- 11:28Speaker 1: just right four. I'm kind of going back and forth
- 11:31Speaker 1: between two. Hey all people, you should if you're write
- 11:36Speaker 1: for you, aren't you from that part of the country.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I just gotta make I mean, there's six states you
- 11:44Speaker 1: can choose from. Yeah, no, I mean I know, but
- 11:47Speaker 1: there's one that's hanging me up for a reason. That
- 11:49Speaker 1: will is everybody ready sure about this? Melissa, go ahead
- 11:54Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Hayden saying Maryland, Virginia,
- 11:59Speaker 1: and d C. Garrett saying New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Cordy
- 12:04Speaker 1: saying Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, Alyssa saying Maine, Massachusetts, Virginia,
- 12:11Speaker 1: Seth saying Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware, Janice saying North Carolina Virginia,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and Maryland, Carl saying Massachusetts, Maryland, and Rhode Island. The
- 12:22Speaker 1: six states are New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and Virginia. Hey, and you do not get a d
- 12:31Speaker 1: C is not a state. That's what I'm saying. That
- 12:34Speaker 1: that was my hangover. I don't understand what would be
- 12:37Speaker 1: your hang down, like Alberta or Puerto Rico. That would
- 12:41Speaker 1: not be right. Well, that that was my problem. Although
- 12:46Speaker 1: the Chesapeake Bay is only bordered by Maryland and Virginia
- 12:50Speaker 1: and also catches water from four other states, more than
- 12:53Speaker 1: one hundred fifties streams and rivers drained into the estuary,
- 12:57Speaker 1: including the James and Potomac rivers. I took Delaware off
- 13:01Speaker 1: for dcut in like talk show, lasers and stuff. When
- 13:05Speaker 1: he's gonna do as I think that a question is
- 13:09Speaker 1: going to carry me through a little bit. Question three,
- 13:11Speaker 1: the topic is cooking. What midwestern city is famous for
- 13:17Speaker 1: their skyline chili? What midwestern city is famous for their
- 13:25Speaker 1: skyline chili? What is skyline chili? It's a secret we'll
- 13:33Speaker 1: find out in the follow up factor And it appears
- 13:35Speaker 1: as though Yanni and Seth both know this. Do you
- 13:38Speaker 1: always in fact know this with certainty. Nope, I have
- 13:41Speaker 1: one answer that came in my head and that's what
- 13:43Speaker 1: I'm going be honest. Certainty is a strong word, but
- 13:49Speaker 1: I'm close to certain What midwestern city is famous for
- 13:53Speaker 1: their skyline chili? What was your PERSONI plane this chili?
- 13:58Speaker 1: What was your percentage on meat on cook sixty something?
- 14:02Speaker 1: Sixty six, one percentage point behind Steve was sixty five.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Chance that they're going to get you're saying the strong chili. Now, Hayden, here,
- 14:14Speaker 1: we're looking for a city. If you would not be
- 14:18Speaker 1: right everybody, he gives you a major hint. That's in
- 14:21Speaker 1: the Midwest. Everybody have an answer answers. We have Hayden
- 14:30Speaker 1: saying Cincinnati, Garrett saying Chicago, Corey saying Cincinnati, Alyssa saying St.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Louis making me feel good, Seth saying Chicago, Janice saying Cincinnati,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and Carl saying Chicago. We have a correct answer in
- 14:43Speaker 1: the room. It's Cincinnati. Skyline chili is unique in that
- 14:48Speaker 1: it's usually seasoned with some combination of chocolate, cinnamon, or nutmeg,
- 14:53Speaker 1: and often served over spaghetti noodles. If you want to
- 14:56Speaker 1: learn how to make this regional dish, then go to
- 14:58Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com and check account Justin Townsend's
- 15:01Speaker 1: recipe for Venison's Skyline chili. Didn't you just say it
- 15:06Speaker 1: was like two ingredients? I You're quite wrong there. Uh,
- 15:10Speaker 1: the Skyline chili is very different usually like onions on
- 15:13Speaker 1: top of chips. And then he said there's chocolate and
- 15:17Speaker 1: simple you're you're naming uh toppings. But the chocolate and
- 15:22Speaker 1: cinnamon and nutmeg and all space, those all spice, those
- 15:25Speaker 1: are unique chili ingredients. True, but if you just look
- 15:29Speaker 1: at a bowl of Skyline chili should be like, it
- 15:32Speaker 1: looks like there's just meat in that chili. Yea, you'd
- 15:34Speaker 1: be like, where's the beans at there's no corn in there,
- 15:37Speaker 1: any of that weird stuff? Like it's great on top
- 15:39Speaker 1: of a hot dog. Have you had it? Have you
- 15:42Speaker 1: had it? Yeah? Ye? Any? Do you like it? Yeah?
- 15:45Speaker 1: I love it. You should follow Justin's recipe on our website.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Question for the topic is biology. This next great question
- 15:53Speaker 1: comes to is via Andrew Jones. If you have a
- 15:55Speaker 1: question you think is right for Meat Eat Trivia, you
- 15:58Speaker 1: can send it to Trivia at the meat dot Com.
- 16:01Speaker 1: In two thousand eleven, a mountain lion was struck by
- 16:05Speaker 1: a vehicle in Connecticut after traveling fift hundred miles from
- 16:10Speaker 1: what state? In two thousand eleven, a mountain lion was
- 16:16Speaker 1: struck by a vehicle in Connecticut after traveling fift hundred
- 16:20Speaker 1: miles from what state? D C. Dude, I'm gonna slap you.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Chocolate Chili knows this one. Yanni had the quickest answer, Johanni,
- 16:33Speaker 1: you feel okay about it? M No, it's out in
- 16:36Speaker 1: the dark looking for the state that this mountain lion
- 16:40Speaker 1: came from. Carl Do you know about how far miles
- 16:45Speaker 1: is the road I grew up on? It was twenty
- 16:49Speaker 1: four miles from the nearest miles real well, so I
- 16:53Speaker 1: measure everything in that amount. Okay, that's my Does everybody
- 16:59Speaker 1: have an answer about what state this mountain lion came
- 17:02Speaker 1: from before being killed? In Connecticut? Is a lot of
- 17:06Speaker 1: Saubill trailers? Does everybody have an answer? It's a struggle
- 17:11Speaker 1: around here, being the only two Montanons that work at
- 17:13Speaker 1: the company. You know how many generations? Uh? Do the
- 17:18Speaker 1: longs go back here? Garrett? I want to say it's
- 17:24Speaker 1: five five? How about you? Corey? I was the first
- 17:28Speaker 1: folks came from California. Oh, Garrett wins, that's a hot topic.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Hayden saying Iowa,
- 17:35Speaker 1: Garrett saying Minnesota, Corey saying Michigan, Alyssa saying South Carolina,
- 17:40Speaker 1: Seth saying North Dakota, Jana saying South Dakota, Carl saying Minnesota.
- 17:44Speaker 1: The first group of answers, we have a correct answer
- 17:47Speaker 1: in the room. It's South Dakota. DNA test show this
- 17:53Speaker 1: cougar originated from the Black Hills of South Dakota, making
- 17:56Speaker 1: it the longest dispersal ever documented for this ECS. Although
- 18:01Speaker 1: it was fifteen hundred miles away, the crow Flies biologists
- 18:04Speaker 1: suspected route was actually more like eighteen hundred miles Based
- 18:08Speaker 1: on fecal and hair samples gathered in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and
- 18:12Speaker 1: New York. It's estimated the cougar had been wandering for
- 18:15Speaker 1: two years before dying seventy miles from New York City. Okay,
- 18:20Speaker 1: so it came from South Dakota. But I asked, I
- 18:22Speaker 1: bet if you asked it it would say Minnesota. Was well,
- 18:24Speaker 1: it didn't taken direct flight to Connecticut or anything. I
- 18:28Speaker 1: I and he said they collected samples from Minnesota, said
- 18:31Speaker 1: Minnesota first, so he probably called Minnesota home, so I
- 18:34Speaker 1: should get a half point. Like question five, the topic
- 18:37Speaker 1: is hunting. Two national parks enlisted hunters to harvest non
- 18:43Speaker 1: native mountain goats in name one of those national parks.
- 18:50Speaker 1: A lot of very quick answers in the room from
- 18:52Speaker 1: everybody except for Alyssa and Carl. Two national parks enlisted
- 18:58Speaker 1: hunters to harvest non native mountain goats in name one
- 19:03Speaker 1: of those national parks. Yanni, you know this. I know
- 19:10Speaker 1: the name of the mountains, but I don't know if
- 19:13Speaker 1: that's the name of the Carefully Garrett, you know this,
- 19:19Speaker 1: I think so. Did you volunteer for this hunt? No? No,
- 19:23Speaker 1: did anybody in volunteer for these hunts? I think we applied,
- 19:28Speaker 1: didn't get picked? Then we have to apply as a group. Yes,
- 19:32Speaker 1: remember that a couple of folks that work for meat
- 19:34Speaker 1: Eater got picked. Who did and first light? Uh rick Ford,
- 19:40Speaker 1: we better quit with the hands. I didn't know that.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Let's I forget who else? Does everybody have an answer?
- 19:45Speaker 1: Looking for one of the two national parks? Go ahead
- 19:49Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Hayden saying Cascade Garrett
- 19:53Speaker 1: saying Titon, Corey sang Titon, lyst Is saying Glacier, Seth
- 19:58Speaker 1: saying Grand Titon, Janice saying Teton, and Carl saying Yellowstone.
- 20:03Speaker 1: The two national parks were Olympic National Park and the
- 20:07Speaker 1: Grand Teton National Park. So a few folks got it.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Are you gonna give us Teton? I'm the only ones
- 20:13Speaker 1: Grand Teton? Spencer, Spencer, what do you think, Phil? I
- 20:18Speaker 1: get it to him? That's right, Phil. The calling program
- 20:21Speaker 1: in the Grand Tetons used one eight volunteer hunters to
- 20:25Speaker 1: kill forty three goats. The calling program in Olympic National
- 20:29Speaker 1: Park used volunteer hunters to kill thirty one goats. The
- 20:34Speaker 1: park service in the Grand Tetons made hunters leave the head,
- 20:37Speaker 1: horns and cape at the kill site, but they did
- 20:40Speaker 1: allow the meat to be harvested. Seth, do you know
- 20:43Speaker 1: if any of those fellas picked from first slider meat eater,
- 20:46Speaker 1: did they like go on the hunt? Did they get
- 20:48Speaker 1: one they went on the hunt? I don't think they.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I don't think they even saw any. Yeah, I know,
- 20:55Speaker 1: Gal that when I believe it was Jess Johnson, when
- 20:58Speaker 1: some of you know here, I don't believe so I
- 21:02Speaker 1: think she's been a couple years now, and but the
- 21:05Speaker 1: my takeaway from her retelling the story of being there
- 21:10Speaker 1: was that it was very unethical hunting. Like you you
- 21:14Speaker 1: go to the little pre pre pre meeting before the
- 21:17Speaker 1: hunt and they're like, look, if there are three animals
- 21:21Speaker 1: lined up in a row, take one shot that hopefully
- 21:23Speaker 1: goes through all three of them. Like the goal there
- 21:27Speaker 1: is to kill as much as possible. It's not ethical hunting.
- 21:31Speaker 1: And so that was like a real It was like
- 21:33Speaker 1: a contrast for her that was like kind of hard
- 21:35Speaker 1: to get it wrap her head around. Going into the
- 21:37Speaker 1: haunt was like, Okay, we don't care what happens other
- 21:41Speaker 1: than the animal dies. Yeah, they want you like shooting
- 21:43Speaker 1: kids and everything. Yeah, kid goes, not kids, bark dwellers,
- 21:49Speaker 1: um if you like, if you if they didn't get them,
- 21:53Speaker 1: a helicopter guy with a gun and a helicopter was
- 21:56Speaker 1: going to get them. I wonder what the justification of
- 21:58Speaker 1: leaving the cape, And I think it's still you're not
- 22:02Speaker 1: like so you are just like killing to kill and
- 22:04Speaker 1: you're not out for a big old relly. That's exactly
- 22:09Speaker 1: I think a lot of they've never met me, me included.
- 22:12Speaker 1: When they applied for this, We're like, oh, yeah, it's
- 22:14Speaker 1: gonna be a dent success, so it's surprising to hear
- 22:16Speaker 1: there was only success rates. Phil. We're halfway through the
- 22:20Speaker 1: game of trivia, give us a scoreboard update. In last
- 22:23Speaker 1: place we have Carl Handsome zero points, Alyssa has one point.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Coming up next are Seth, Hayden and Garrett with two
- 22:31Speaker 1: points apiece. Corey has three, and in first place, the
- 22:35Speaker 1: honest patelis four points. Nice we get some camera questions
- 22:40Speaker 1: or something in there that's a pillar of meat. You
- 22:46Speaker 1: don't get one. Your bone is the ten questions about
- 22:50Speaker 1: the things that we cover. Question six. The topic is cooking.
- 23:03Speaker 1: This next great question comes to is being Nick Watkins.
- 23:07Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right for
- 23:08Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia, you can send it a trivia at
- 23:10Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com. This French word refers to
- 23:14Speaker 1: meat that's been cooked and preserved in its own fat.
- 23:21Speaker 1: This French word refers to meat that's been cooked and
- 23:25Speaker 1: preserved in its own fat. Very quick answer from Hayden
- 23:30Speaker 1: and Seth. Stupid question. I think that question. I think
- 23:36Speaker 1: that my cooking success is higher than you. I have
- 23:41Speaker 1: all the stats. It is not higher than those three folks.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I'll get an answer. While we're looking. You distract the
- 23:49Speaker 1: rest of the room and do some filler for me
- 23:52Speaker 1: to be close. Spencer, tell him he's a good hunter.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Hunter informed that I have a high war score. I
- 24:03Speaker 1: didn't know what that meant. Though. Winds above replacement it
- 24:06Speaker 1: is medior trivia is only advanced stat You hear that South,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I got a good advanced statins winds above replacement a
- 24:18Speaker 1: decent amount. Listen to me, you'll learn about it. Spencer.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Would you please repeat you you're high up on their
- 24:28Speaker 1: too youngest, Spencer, will you preat the question in French place?
- 24:31Speaker 1: The question is this? This French word refers to meat
- 24:34Speaker 1: that's been cooked and preserved in its own fat. Does
- 24:39Speaker 1: that help you No? I want the record to show
- 24:45Speaker 1: I caught Hayden looking at my board. Are the man
- 24:48Speaker 1: who thinks that he has the best cooking Hayden? I
- 24:52Speaker 1: have the stats in front of me. You're batting in
- 24:56Speaker 1: the cooking category a little higher. He was hoping to
- 25:00Speaker 1: get fifty. Does everybody have an answer? Something down those
- 25:04Speaker 1: Kenyan ranges? Want to go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 25:09Speaker 1: We have Hayden saying cone fie, Garrett saying what does
- 25:13Speaker 1: that say? That's fn juliet. It's the old French term
- 25:15Speaker 1: for coney. Okay, Corey saying what does that say? Corey
- 25:19Speaker 1: just made up a word? Okay, listen without an answer,
- 25:22Speaker 1: Seth saying confy, and Carl saying baguett He just thought
- 25:31Speaker 1: of a French words. Good on. The correct answer is counfy.
- 25:36Speaker 1: This is a fantastic way to use meat from ducks
- 25:39Speaker 1: and geese. To learn the process, go to the meatator
- 25:42Speaker 1: dot com and read Wade's recipe for duck counfy, Steve's
- 25:46Speaker 1: recipe for goose counfy, or Dan Yelle's recipe for gizzard kunfy.
- 25:51Speaker 1: I did some turkey legs and style. We have to
- 25:55Speaker 1: you can use a lot less oil Suvi counfy see
- 25:59Speaker 1: we we that would be we. I feel like you're
- 26:03Speaker 1: putting Janice in here with all of us is just
- 26:05Speaker 1: patting his numbers. It's like a pretty pretty weak separate
- 26:10Speaker 1: stats for when Stephen Brody aren't here. Yeah. Question seven,
- 26:15Speaker 1: the topic is conservation. This three word movement, which encourages
- 26:21Speaker 1: people to be mindful of their impact on nature, became
- 26:24Speaker 1: a conservation organization. In this three word movement, which encourages
- 26:33Speaker 1: people to be mindful of their impact on nature, became
- 26:36Speaker 1: a conservation organization. In quick answers from Carl and Hayden, Carl,
- 26:43Speaker 1: is this gonna get you on the board? This might
- 26:44Speaker 1: be it? Okay? And I demand an extra half point
- 26:47Speaker 1: if I actually get it right. Corey seems like he
- 26:50Speaker 1: knew it. The rest of the room has yet to
- 26:52Speaker 1: write down an answer. Corey, you know this, I think so.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I practice it all the time. This three word movement,
- 26:59Speaker 1: which encourages people to be mindful of their impact on nature,
- 27:03Speaker 1: became a conservation organization. You're honest, is stumped. He's trying
- 27:11Speaker 1: to think of all the three word things he knows
- 27:13Speaker 1: in the world. Not in the world just ones that conservation.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? No, I don't know, as
- 27:27Speaker 1: you can see on my board. Give me some time.
- 27:31Speaker 1: What's Max's time on these? Until it becomes uninteresting? For Romeo?
- 27:36Speaker 1: You know it's two minutes rum Cube? Do you ever
- 27:39Speaker 1: play that game? What do you call it? Rameo? What? Romeo?
- 27:44Speaker 1: I thought it was just Rummy. That's a different Garrett.
- 27:49Speaker 1: You know this one? Oh yeah, yeah. Everybody but Yanni
- 27:53Speaker 1: knows it. Oh, oh, anyone's games, Yanni, it's about to
- 27:59Speaker 1: become interesting. I'll go no answer. Everybody else have an answer? Yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Hayden saying
- 28:10Speaker 1: leave no trace, Garrett saying just say no. I believe
- 28:14Speaker 1: that was dares, Corey's saying leave no trace and listen,
- 28:20Speaker 1: will leave no trace, seth saying keep it public, be honest.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Without an answer in Carl saying leave no trace. Carl
- 28:26Speaker 1: got it, he answered, is leave no trace. I'm coming
- 28:31Speaker 1: for you, Johnny. I don't think there's enough questions left
- 28:34Speaker 1: for me to catch up to you. But although Leave
- 28:36Speaker 1: No Trace became its own nonprofit in n the concept
- 28:41Speaker 1: is much older than that. The Boy Scouts of America
- 28:44Speaker 1: have been teaching its principles since the nineteen seventies, and
- 28:47Speaker 1: in nineteen eighty seven the U. S. Forest Service BLM
- 28:50Speaker 1: and National Park Service developed a pamphlet titled Leave No
- 28:54Speaker 1: Trace Land Ethics. So I grew up on the edge
- 28:58Speaker 1: of the Boundary Waters can area in Minnesota, and everybody
- 29:01Speaker 1: who enters the Boundary Waters has to watch a video
- 29:05Speaker 1: before you go in, and they really club you over
- 29:07Speaker 1: the head with the whole leave no trace thing that's real.
- 29:09Speaker 1: You have to watch a video. Yeah, it's part of it,
- 29:11Speaker 1: and there's like a little quiz towbody ever does that.
- 29:14Speaker 1: But but the video you have to watch and people
- 29:17Speaker 1: always complain about it. They're like, I watched this video
- 29:19Speaker 1: twice last year. Man, I was like, I've watched it
- 29:21Speaker 1: fifteen times today. Okay, sit down, shut up, watch it.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I leave no trace. Garrett went with the just say no,
- 29:28Speaker 1: which again I think is uh one middle school dare
- 29:31Speaker 1: programs teach us came to mind. Is the only three
- 29:35Speaker 1: word phrase I know? I like it? Question eight the
- 29:38Speaker 1: topic is fishing. This next great question comes to is
- 29:42Speaker 1: via Matt done Away. If you have a question you
- 29:44Speaker 1: think is right for Meat Eat Trivia, you can send
- 29:46Speaker 1: it to trivia at the meat eater dot com. What
- 29:50Speaker 1: are the two colors used on the sidelights of boats?
- 29:56Speaker 1: I feel like it's also step bone. What are the
- 29:59Speaker 1: two colors used on the sidelights of boats? Corey is
- 30:06Speaker 1: stumped more of a drift boat guy. You don't have
- 30:10Speaker 1: lights on those, do you? Meanwhile, Seth has more electronics
- 30:15Speaker 1: on his boat than the podcast studio. You know this one, Seth,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I don't want of them. Carl, I think I know
- 30:27Speaker 1: the sound water man thinks he knows it. Yeah, well, yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 1: the canoes didn't have lights on them, but I did
- 30:33Speaker 1: do a sailing trip not too long ago. Be honest,
- 30:36Speaker 1: have you created an answer yet looking for the two
- 30:39Speaker 1: colors used on the sidelights of boats? Does everybody have
- 30:44Speaker 1: an answer? Yes? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 30:48Speaker 1: have Hayden saying green and red, Garrett saying red and green,
- 30:51Speaker 1: Corey saying red and yellow, Melyssa is saying green and blue,
- 30:55Speaker 1: Seth saying red and green, Janice red and green, Carl,
- 30:59Speaker 1: green and red. The room did very well. It is
- 31:02Speaker 1: red and green real. The only people that didn't get
- 31:05Speaker 1: it Spencer to that, Corey and Melissa. Sidelights are meant
- 31:13Speaker 1: to be visible to other vessels that are approaching from
- 31:16Speaker 1: the front or side. The red lights are always on
- 31:19Speaker 1: the port side and the green lights are always on
- 31:22Speaker 1: the starboard side. For boats less than thirty nine ft long,
- 31:26Speaker 1: the lights are supposed to be visible from one mile away.
- 31:30Speaker 1: You know, it's very hard to remember which side is
- 31:33Speaker 1: which when you are only in a boat once a year.
- 31:36Speaker 1: That what you need to know that in a good
- 31:38Speaker 1: way to remember which side is sport is that port
- 31:43Speaker 1: wine is red or port is four letters and left
- 31:49Speaker 1: is four letters. Good one to the other way, Phil,
- 31:52Speaker 1: We have two questions left. Give us a scoreboard update.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I think it got interesting in the second half of
- 31:57Speaker 1: trivia here pretty interesting. We have four are players left
- 32:01Speaker 1: in the game. Those four players are seven Corey with
- 32:05Speaker 1: four points, Hayden with five, and the Honest to tell
- 32:08Speaker 1: Us with six. Stumble Shelby Index says I need one
- 32:14Speaker 1: more reading true. Two questions left. Question nine. The topic
- 32:19Speaker 1: is gear. Oh, come oncause because johannest has a wonderful
- 32:28Speaker 1: podcast called gear Talk, I need to drop the ball
- 32:32Speaker 1: on one and I need to come up on one.
- 32:33Speaker 1: What's that podcast about? N it's out right now by
- 32:36Speaker 1: the time talk about it, Jordan Boughton, I get together
- 32:40Speaker 1: and talk about all things gear new old, uh, new again,
- 32:46Speaker 1: new again? Yeah. Anything you want to know? Is it
- 32:50Speaker 1: specific to hunting? Gear? Is mostly hunting gear, some camping gear,
- 32:55Speaker 1: some fishing gear. But whatever kind of gear Jordan and
- 32:58Speaker 1: I use goes. I'm guessing that podcast is not going
- 33:02Speaker 1: to help folks with this question. Though. Glamping is a
- 33:06Speaker 1: combination of what two words. Have you guys covered glamping
- 33:11Speaker 1: on the show yet? Do you think you ever will?
- 33:15Speaker 1: Do you think you should cover glamping? That wouldn't be
- 33:17Speaker 1: a fun episode? T glamping expert, do you know any
- 33:20Speaker 1: folks that are are glampers? No? Again, the question is
- 33:26Speaker 1: glamping is a combination of what two words. A lot
- 33:31Speaker 1: of very quick answers in the room. Folks are confident.
- 33:36Speaker 1: It's everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 33:40Speaker 1: have Hayden saying glamorous and camping, Garrett saying glamorous camping,
- 33:45Speaker 1: Corey's the glamorous camping, glamorous camping, glamorous camping, Yanni glamour camping,
- 33:50Speaker 1: Carl saying glamour camping. They got it. It is glamorous
- 33:53Speaker 1: and camping. If you just said glamour, I'd give it
- 33:56Speaker 1: to you. Glamping refers to a form of camping that
- 34:00Speaker 1: involves accommodations more luxurious than those normally associated with traditional camping.
- 34:05Speaker 1: The word was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in ten.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Does a one of those like rooftop tents fall into
- 34:14Speaker 1: that category? About Spencer only, Yeah, because I've kind of
- 34:19Speaker 1: think it does. Phil. We have one question left, who
- 34:22Speaker 1: is left in the game. We do. Everyone got a point,
- 34:25Speaker 1: but now the only two players left in the game
- 34:28Speaker 1: are Janice, who was in first place with seven and
- 34:31Speaker 1: on his tail with six points. Hayden samic question ten,
- 34:35Speaker 1: good topic, hunting. What famous hunting ranch in Texas has
- 34:43Speaker 1: a Ford pickup named after it that's been in production
- 34:47Speaker 1: since two thousand one? Bones? What famous hunting ranch in
- 34:53Speaker 1: Texas has a Forward pickup named after it that's been
- 34:56Speaker 1: in production since two thousand one? Yeah, you know this,
- 35:01Speaker 1: I believe, So that's sounds very fun. Seth knew it
- 35:04Speaker 1: right away before I even finished the question. Haydn, you
- 35:06Speaker 1: know this. We need Yanni to get it wrong and
- 35:10Speaker 1: Hayden to get it right to go to a tiebreaker. Honest,
- 35:14Speaker 1: you could just throw it. Man. You love tiebreakers, but
- 35:21Speaker 1: he also loves with Johnny hunted on a ranch that
- 35:23Speaker 1: borders this ranch. Day, You're gonna get in trouble. Wait,
- 35:29Speaker 1: no one knows what ranch you hunted on? He does?
- 35:34Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Steve would smash you in
- 35:37Speaker 1: the head right now that ranch. Go ahead and reveil
- 35:43Speaker 1: your answers. We have Hayden saying Longhorn, Garrett saying King
- 35:47Speaker 1: Corey saying King, Alyssa is saying King, Seth saying King,
- 35:50Speaker 1: and I'm saying King, and Carl saying the fe The
- 35:55Speaker 1: correct answer is the King Ranch. Oh well, it turnes well.
- 36:01Speaker 1: At eight hundred twenty five thousand acres, the King Ranch
- 36:05Speaker 1: is larger than the state of Rhode Island. Their partnership
- 36:08Speaker 1: with Ford was struck up in the late nineties because
- 36:11Speaker 1: the ranch needed a lot of trucks and Ford was
- 36:13Speaker 1: on the lookout for a good branding opportunity. The ranches
- 36:16Speaker 1: home do about seventy thousand deer, eighteen thousand nil guy
- 36:20Speaker 1: in six thousand turkey. Janice our winner. Did you kill
- 36:25Speaker 1: something on that ranch, not on the King Ranch, but
- 36:28Speaker 1: on the neighboring ranch. I did, killed a nil guy
- 36:32Speaker 1: and two pigs. And was it just like a game
- 36:36Speaker 1: paradise over there? Yes? And were you very aware that
- 36:40Speaker 1: the King Ranch was next door? Yes, But the King
- 36:44Speaker 1: Ranches it's like a county. So when you're like the
- 36:47Speaker 1: King Ranches more than it's yeah, it's yeah. I killed
- 36:52Speaker 1: my first pig on that ranch, the same ranch that,
- 36:54Speaker 1: not the King Ranch. But story I like to tell
- 36:57Speaker 1: that we were there in February hunting uh, the nil
- 37:01Speaker 1: guy in Pigs after deer season. I don't know if
- 37:04Speaker 1: that plays anything to do plays into my story, but
- 37:08Speaker 1: we would be flanking following, you know, groups of nail
- 37:11Speaker 1: guy trying to get into position for a bow shot,
- 37:15Speaker 1: and we'd have white tail box sort of like moving
- 37:18Speaker 1: the opposite direction of us through the woods, not more
- 37:20Speaker 1: than you know, thirty forty yards away, like within bow range,
- 37:23Speaker 1: and they would just sort of stop, kind of look
- 37:25Speaker 1: at you. You look back at them, and they'd be like,
- 37:27Speaker 1: hey see you, I'm going that way, and you just
- 37:29Speaker 1: kind of keep on moving like it was that kind
- 37:31Speaker 1: of game rich place where the bucks are just like, hey,
- 37:35Speaker 1: acknowledged each other. Yeah, but they're like, we don't. I don't.
- 37:38Speaker 1: I know, I don't need to spook Yanni with an
- 37:41Speaker 1: authoritative victory. Eight correct answers. I think the next closest
- 37:45Speaker 1: was a handful of folks that got six. What happens
- 37:48Speaker 1: next is you get to choose where the five dollar
- 37:50Speaker 1: donation from meat Eater goes. So what's it gonna be.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with the Sportsman's Alliance this time. Spencer,
- 37:57Speaker 1: What do you like about them? I like that do
- 38:01Speaker 1: the hard conservation work that I think that most of
- 38:05Speaker 1: us hunter conservationists wish we did more of and wish
- 38:09Speaker 1: we had the time to do more of um. Like
- 38:12Speaker 1: they're out there daily staying on top of the anti
- 38:15Speaker 1: hunting legislation that seems to be bombarding us these days
- 38:19Speaker 1: and defending hunting trapping um, especially those like fringe hunting
- 38:24Speaker 1: and trapping activities. They're working hard to keep those legal
- 38:31Speaker 1: so they're not so the anti hunters can't chip away
- 38:33Speaker 1: at the edges. So yeah, do your do all of
- 38:36Speaker 1: us a favor and go and become a member of
- 38:38Speaker 1: Sportsman's Lines at a minimum. If you're not going to
- 38:41Speaker 1: support them in a monetary way, you should follow them
- 38:43Speaker 1: on Instagram because they have daily updates about different bills
- 38:47Speaker 1: and different states that all folks who like to hunt
- 38:50Speaker 1: and fish and recreating the outdoors should be aware of.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Janna sending five dollars their way. Join us next, guys.
- 38:57Speaker 1: I appreciate you, guys. Let me win another one, Champ,
- 39:00Speaker 1: Thank you, Honice, thank you Carl for joining us. That's
- 39:02Speaker 1: it for this game of mediatter trivia. Join us next
- 39:05Speaker 1: time for more of the only game show where conservation
- 39:08Speaker 1: always wins.
