- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Real Talk with Mike D. Hello. Is this
- 0:09Speaker 1: thing on? Can you hear me? Are we live? Okay,
- 0:13Speaker 1: we're live. All right. Welcome back to Real Talk with
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mike D. I am the one, the only, and the
- 0:19Speaker 1: original Mike D. And today I want to talk about
- 0:23Speaker 1: something a little bit different. I want to talk about
- 0:27Speaker 1: why I started this podcast in the first place. What
- 0:31Speaker 1: inspired me? Why did I decide to sit behind a
- 0:36Speaker 1: microphone and start talking about life? My struggles, relationships, my family, money, stress, loneliness,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and self-doubt, and mental health, and all the other things
- 0:50Speaker 1: that we deal with as human beings. And honestly, it
- 0:55Speaker 1: wasn't because I thought I had all the answers. Absolutely not.
- 0:59Speaker 1: It was quite the opposite. I started this podcast because
- 1:03Speaker 1: I realized that sometimes we just need somebody to talk to.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Somebody who isn't pretending to have the perfect life. Somebody
- 1:12Speaker 1: who's willing to say, you know what? I've been there too.
- 1:17Speaker 1: That's where Real Talk with Mike D came from. And
- 1:21Speaker 1: I'll be honest with you. I never woke up one
- 1:23Speaker 1: morning and thought, you know what? I think I'm going
- 1:26Speaker 1: to become a podcaster. It wasn't some lifelong dream. It
- 1:31Speaker 1: wasn't some master plan. It wasn't like I had a
- 1:34Speaker 1: production company sitting in my basement waiting for me to
- 1:37Speaker 1: become the next big thing. Absolutely not. It started with
- 1:44Speaker 1: something much simpler. I had something to say. And I
- 1:50Speaker 1: realized there were probably other people out there who needed
- 1:53Speaker 1: to hear it. And I've learned over the years that
- 1:56Speaker 1: everybody has a story. Everybody has struggles. Everybody has things
- 2:02Speaker 1: they don't talk about. You can look at somebody and
- 2:06Speaker 1: think they've got everything together. They've got the fancy house.
- 2:10Speaker 1: They've got the big job. They've got the perfect family.
- 2:13Speaker 1: They're smiling. They're laughing. They're posting pictures on social media.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And you think, that person has a great life. But
- 2:23Speaker 1: you don't know what's happening when that person closes the
- 2:26Speaker 1: front door. You don't know what they're thinking about when
- 2:29Speaker 1: they're lying in bed at 2 o'clock in the morning.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You don't know what they're worried about. You don't know
- 2:34Speaker 1: what they've lost. And you don't know what they're afraid of.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And that's one of the biggest things that inspired me
- 2:41Speaker 1: to start talking because I realized that we don't talk
- 2:44Speaker 1: enough about real life. We live in a world where
- 2:50Speaker 1: everybody seems to have the perfect life. Scroll through social
- 2:54Speaker 1: media and you'll see vacations, people's beautiful homes, their fancy
- 3:00Speaker 1: new cars. They're perfect relationships. Perfect families, perfect bodies. Everybody
- 3:06Speaker 1: is smiling and everybody is happy. And meanwhile, there might
- 3:11Speaker 1: be somebody sitting alone in their car thinking, what the
- 3:15Speaker 1: hell am I doing with my life? And nobody knows.
- 3:20Speaker 1: That's the part that interests me. The real stuff. The
- 3:24Speaker 1: stuff that doesn't always make it onto Facebook or Instagram.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Conversations we have when nobody else is listening. The moments
- 3:34Speaker 1: when we're struggling. The moments when we're questioning ourselves. The
- 3:39Speaker 1: moments when we wonder, are we good enough? And that's
- 3:43Speaker 1: what I wanted this podcast to be about. Real life.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Not perfection. Not pretending. Not trying to impress anybody. Just
- 3:52Speaker 1: real talk. As I've gotten older, I've realized something. Life
- 3:58Speaker 1: doesn't come with an instruction manual. But wouldn't that be nice?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Imagine if when you turned 18, somebody handed you a
- 4:05Speaker 1: book and said, here you go. This is everything you
- 4:09Speaker 1: need to know. Chapter one, how to handle heartbreak. Chapter two,
- 4:17Speaker 1: how to deal with losing people. And chapter three, how
- 4:21Speaker 1: to manage money. Chapter four, how to raise kids. And
- 4:25Speaker 1: chapter five, how to deal with stress. Chapter 6, how
- 4:31Speaker 1: to figure out what the hell you're doing with your life. Unfortunately,
- 4:36Speaker 1: that book does not exist. We learn as we go.
- 4:39Speaker 1: You know, sometimes we make great decisions and sometimes we
- 4:45Speaker 1: make terrible decisions. Sometimes we get knocked down and sometimes
- 4:49Speaker 1: we get back up. And sometimes, yeah, we stay down
- 4:54Speaker 1: for a little while and that's okay. One thing I've
- 4:57Speaker 1: learned is that struggling does not make you weak. It
- 5:02Speaker 1: makes you human. Now, if you listen to this podcast,
- 5:07Speaker 1: you know I don't always talk about easy subjects. I've
- 5:11Speaker 1: talked about my loneliness. I've talked about my self-doubt. I've
- 5:15Speaker 1: talked about financial struggles. And I've talked about stress and anxiety.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I've talked about family. I've talked about relationships. And I've
- 5:23Speaker 1: talked about getting older. I've talked about work. I've talked
- 5:26Speaker 1: about the holidays. I've even talked about things that make
- 5:29Speaker 1: us laugh because life isn't just one emotion. One day
- 5:36Speaker 1: you can be having the best day of your life
- 5:38Speaker 1: and the next day you can be sitting there wondering
- 5:40Speaker 1: what went wrong. That's life. It's messy. It's complicated. It
- 5:47Speaker 1: can be very beautiful. It can be frustrating but funny.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And it can be heartbreaking. Sometimes all of those in
- 5:56Speaker 1: the same day. And I wanted this podcast to reflect that.
- 6:03Speaker 1: But this might be the biggest reason I started this podcast.
- 6:09Speaker 1: If somebody listens to one of my episodes while they're
- 6:11Speaker 1: driving to work and they're sitting at home, they might
- 6:15Speaker 1: be walking. They could be listening while they're lying in bed.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And they hear something I say and think, damn, I
- 6:23Speaker 1: thought I was the only one who felt that way.
- 6:25Speaker 1: then I've accomplished something because sometimes that's all we need.
- 6:29Speaker 1: We need to know we're not alone. Maybe you're going
- 6:33Speaker 1: through a difficult time. Maybe you're struggling financially. Maybe you're
- 6:37Speaker 1: dealing with family problems. Maybe you're lonely. Maybe you're questioning
- 6:42Speaker 1: your direction in life. Maybe you're starting over. Maybe you're
- 6:45Speaker 1: just tired and nobody around you understands. I want this
- 6:52Speaker 1: podcast to remind you You're not the only one. There
- 6:59Speaker 1: are millions of people walking around every day carrying things
- 7:02Speaker 1: nobody knows about. And sometimes hearing another person's story can
- 7:06Speaker 1: make you feel just a little less alone. Let me
- 7:12Speaker 1: make something very, very clear. I am not sitting here
- 7:17Speaker 1: telling you that I'm an expert on life. Absolutely not.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I'm just a guy who lived some life. I've made
- 7:25Speaker 1: plenty of mistakes. I've learned some lessons. I've experienced good
- 7:29Speaker 1: times and I've experienced difficult times. I've changed. I've grown.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I've screwed things up and I have gotten back up
- 7:36Speaker 1: and I'm still figuring things out. Just like everybody else.
- 7:42Speaker 1: That's why I don't want this podcast to sound like
- 7:45Speaker 1: somebody standing on a stage telling you how to live
- 7:48Speaker 1: your life. That's not what this is. This is a conversation.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Some things, some things need to change. Sometimes it's serious.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Sometimes it's emotional. Sometimes it's funny. And sometimes it's probably
- 8:09Speaker 1: going to get a little ridiculous. But if we can't
- 8:13Speaker 1: laugh at ourselves once in a while, we're going to
- 8:15Speaker 1: have a really difficult time getting through life. And that's
- 8:20Speaker 1: exactly where the name came from, Real Talk with Mike D.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I wanted the name to say exactly what this podcast is.
- 8:27Speaker 1: It's real talk. I'm not pretending. I'm not trying to
- 8:30Speaker 1: be something I'm not. I'm Mike. This is my voice.
- 8:35Speaker 1: These are my thoughts. These are my experiences. And I'm
- 8:39Speaker 1: going to share them honestly. You may disagree with me. Hell,
- 8:45Speaker 1: you may agree with me. You might listen to an
- 8:48Speaker 1: episode and say, Mike, you are completely wrong. And that's okay.
- 8:54Speaker 1: We're allowed to disagree. The important thing is that we're
- 8:58Speaker 1: talking because that's how we learn from each other. My
- 9:04Speaker 1: hope is that real talk with Mikey becomes more than
- 9:06Speaker 1: just me sitting behind a microphone. I want it to
- 9:09Speaker 1: feel like you're sitting across the table from a friend.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Maybe we're drinking coffee. Maybe we're sitting around a fire.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Maybe we're driving somewhere And we're just talking, talking about life,
- 9:23Speaker 1: talking about what's bothering us, talking about what makes us happy,
- 9:28Speaker 1: talking about the things we're afraid to say out loud
- 9:31Speaker 1: and hopefully laughing a little along the way because life
- 9:35Speaker 1: is too short to take everything so seriously. That is
- 9:42Speaker 1: true because life is too short to take everything so seriously.
- 9:50Speaker 1: You know, we all have problems. We all have issues.
- 9:53Speaker 1: We all have things we're hiding. And we all have
- 9:55Speaker 1: things we don't feel comfortable to talk about. Myself included.
- 10:00Speaker 1: It's not easy for me to open up, especially to
- 10:07Speaker 1: strangers or millions of people. I consider this cheap therapy.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I want you all to know you're not alone. Like
- 10:23Speaker 1: I said, we all have issues. We all have problems.
- 10:26Speaker 1: We all have things we're facing. And sometimes we all
- 10:30Speaker 1: feel like we're going through these alone. And we're not.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And that is the goal of this podcast, is to
- 10:38Speaker 1: know that you're not alone. But anyhow, that's going to
- 10:44Speaker 1: do it for today's episode. I greatly appreciate you being here.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I appreciate you listening. And until the next episode, I
- 10:53Speaker 1: bid you peace and happiness and be the reason why
- 10:57Speaker 1: somebody smiles today. Peace.
