- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number two
- 0:18Speaker 1: and fifty seven, and this week on the show, my
- 0:21Speaker 1: buddy Further and I are joined by the First Light
- 0:23Speaker 1: crew up at my family deer Camp to swap hunting stories,
- 0:27Speaker 1: laugh a lot, talk gear, and gush over our favorite
- 0:31Speaker 1: big game species. All right, so, welcome to the wire
- 0:48Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx. For the second
- 0:52Speaker 1: time in three episodes or four episodes, we're back doing
- 0:57Speaker 1: a deer camp podcast for um for good reason too.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I got I don't know if you knew this, Josh,
- 1:04Speaker 1: but I got a lot of emails and messages and
- 1:06Speaker 1: stuff saying that some people thought that was one of
- 1:07Speaker 1: their favorite episodes, the one we did with Dad. That
- 1:11Speaker 1: was cool. You had a good couple of guests on
- 1:13Speaker 1: that episode. I think that was probably what did it
- 1:15Speaker 1: that might be hit. Speaking of which, I thought a
- 1:18Speaker 1: good way to start today would be for each one
- 1:21Speaker 1: of our real guests here today we got Jordan's, Gregg
- 1:25Speaker 1: and Ford. I would like each of you to share
- 1:27Speaker 1: your favorite Further story of the week, because I've told
- 1:31Speaker 1: you it has a whole bunch of stories about Further. Um,
- 1:35Speaker 1: what stands out to you for Forward? Is your favorite
- 1:38Speaker 1: story about Further that I shared? Can you come back
- 1:41Speaker 1: to me? I gotta think through all of the ones, ever,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Greg oh Man, I was hoping I was going to
- 1:48Speaker 1: get to go last. Um. I think my favorite Further
- 1:53Speaker 1: story to this point, Man, I hate to be cliche,
- 1:58Speaker 1: but I think it's the birthday cake story. Birthday. Yeah.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I know that was a front runner for a lot
- 2:03Speaker 1: of people here, but they're so special about the birthday cakes.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And I told the Birthday cake store in the podcast, Josh,
- 2:09Speaker 1: I'm sure you haven't. Don't. You can probably skip it now.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I don't know if we did. I'll give the real
- 2:14Speaker 1: cliff notes version. But we're maybe thirteen or fourteen. And
- 2:18Speaker 1: it was my birthday and for my birthday party had
- 2:21Speaker 1: a bunch of like my buddies all spent the night
- 2:23Speaker 1: and we set up a tent in the backyard of
- 2:25Speaker 1: like our suburban neighborhood and we're all going to camp
- 2:28Speaker 1: in the tent in the backyard, real real civil, low
- 2:31Speaker 1: key stuff, and uh, we're all heading out to the
- 2:34Speaker 1: tent in the evening, and uh, I happen to bramp
- 2:37Speaker 1: the fact. Oh you know, uh, there's actually coyotes. We've
- 2:41Speaker 1: been hearing coyotes out here. And I got this one
- 2:44Speaker 1: friend who back in that day, you know, he he
- 2:47Speaker 1: liked to partake in the food truck. You know, he
- 2:50Speaker 1: was just a little bit. My buddies called him Squash
- 2:52Speaker 1: back in the day before he was Further. He was
- 2:54Speaker 1: called Squash, had good nickname throughout the years, sub Squash.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Squash heard me say something about kyotes and he turn
- 3:04Speaker 1: it looked at me and his eyes were huge, like
- 3:07Speaker 1: like eight balls, and he says to me, I better
- 3:10Speaker 1: bring this birthday kick back inside. He would raise him
- 3:14Speaker 1: back inside and I think your phone makes that funky
- 3:17Speaker 1: noise and you bring close to your mike by the way. Yeah, Um,
- 3:21Speaker 1: he's trying to interfere with the story. He is trying
- 3:25Speaker 1: to try and get the Further story stopped, but the
- 3:27Speaker 1: Further train is moving. Um, so that's the birthday cake story.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And I actually gave the speech at Further's wedding. I
- 3:35Speaker 1: was the best man in his wedding and I gave
- 3:36Speaker 1: the speech and in that speech, I managed to bring
- 3:38Speaker 1: up the birthday cake story, and so brought up kind
- 3:43Speaker 1: of midway through the speech. And then my line to
- 3:47Speaker 1: end the speech was, and Josh, make sure you don't
- 3:51Speaker 1: take any birthday cake in your honeymoon suite tonight. You
- 3:54Speaker 1: fit in a couple of good ones in that. I
- 3:56Speaker 1: told the birthday cake story. I also told the archery store,
- 4:00Speaker 1: which maybe someone Yeah, that was my favorite one, especially
- 4:05Speaker 1: the delivery off you know when you referred to a
- 4:09Speaker 1: friend that would not be named, came all the way around.
- 4:12Speaker 1: That was good. It wasn't a giveaway that I was
- 4:14Speaker 1: sitting here just like trying to hide behind my hat
- 4:17Speaker 1: or something. Not immediately to me, but not until he
- 4:20Speaker 1: said Marks was saying that it was sixty to seventy
- 4:24Speaker 1: yards off the mark, your whole head just kind of
- 4:27Speaker 1: sank a little bit as big time embellishment on the
- 4:30Speaker 1: Marks part. No, I don't do that with my stories.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But I'll tell you what this this squashed guy, he
- 4:35Speaker 1: didn't miss the target by sixties seventy yards. He hit
- 4:38Speaker 1: the driveway, it ricocheted over the road and hit a vehicle.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Regional Director, Ladies and gentlemen, right here as you can
- 4:47Speaker 1: see this we've been doing all weekend, just sitting around
- 4:50Speaker 1: or not week I guess during the week, but sitting
- 4:52Speaker 1: around and Mark telling embarrassing stories about me and pretty
- 4:56Speaker 1: much par for the course these days. I guess you
- 4:58Speaker 1: think you make kind of been asking for are making
- 5:00Speaker 1: him the best man your wedding knowing you as I
- 5:05Speaker 1: told you guys ago, one of these days of the
- 5:07Speaker 1: day is gonna come crashing down from Mark. I'm gonna
- 5:09Speaker 1: get my revenge. I want to give. I want to
- 5:12Speaker 1: give you further some big props because I did like
- 5:16Speaker 1: call you Don't a few weeks ago or a month
- 5:18Speaker 1: ago whatever and said, hey, we've got a group of
- 5:21Speaker 1: guys from First Like coming to deer Camp for a
- 5:23Speaker 1: few days. Um, would you have any interest in coming
- 5:25Speaker 1: along and just kind of helping out. It could be
- 5:27Speaker 1: nice to have someone else who kind of knows the ropes,
- 5:29Speaker 1: who can kind of help run the camp so that
- 5:32Speaker 1: I can be working and doing different things like that.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And uh, you were so kind to accept that. And
- 5:40Speaker 1: you run a top shelf camp. It's been a lot
- 5:42Speaker 1: of fun. I've had a good time. Yeah, you run
- 5:45Speaker 1: an absolute top shelf camp. So so yeah, we're here
- 5:47Speaker 1: up at the cabin further here running the run of
- 5:50Speaker 1: the ship. Over here to my left, I got Jordan's
- 5:53Speaker 1: how Jordan, can you tell us? Uh? Your your ten
- 5:57Speaker 1: second cliff note introduction. Who you are, what you're doing here? Yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'm Jordan Riley. I am one of the owners of
- 6:03Speaker 1: Captured Creative up here shooting stills and footage in the
- 6:08Speaker 1: last couple of days. Yes. Now, continuing around the clock clockwise,
- 6:11Speaker 1: we go to forward, sitting on the leather couch. Sitting
- 6:14Speaker 1: on the leather couch, Ford van Fausten, content manager, First Light.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Next up, we've got Greg. Yeah, I'm Greg Farrell on
- 6:23Speaker 1: the product operations manager at First Light. Here. Uh, working
- 6:27Speaker 1: with you guys, trying out some gear and talking product development.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Getting some time the tree stand has been great. Yeah.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I I feel like when I pitched coming up to
- 6:39Speaker 1: this camp. It was months ago. I think when we
- 6:42Speaker 1: first had these conversations and I had mentioned, well, I
- 6:45Speaker 1: got two different options. We go down south and we
- 6:48Speaker 1: could hunt and we probably see good number deer, but
- 6:51Speaker 1: it wouldn't be quite as interesting and would experience. We
- 6:54Speaker 1: have to, you know, stay in a hotel or something
- 6:56Speaker 1: um or maybe the guest bedroom of my house, but
- 6:59Speaker 1: we have a tea old baby. That wouldn't be much fun. Um.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Or we could go up to my northern Michigan deer camp.
- 7:05Speaker 1: One room cabin, no electricity, no water, you know, woodburn
- 7:09Speaker 1: and stove of all that, but not as many deer.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Now that you have lived this hunt, the trip is
- 7:15Speaker 1: coming to a conclusion. Um, So, well, you guys chose
- 7:20Speaker 1: Option B. Now that you've lived that, are you happy
- 7:24Speaker 1: with that choice? Or do you wish that we'd gone
- 7:26Speaker 1: with option now? I'll jump in here first. I guess, um,
- 7:30Speaker 1: we're actually just having this conversation at dinner. I think
- 7:35Speaker 1: my exact words where I would spend a couple of
- 7:39Speaker 1: days at a place like this and see less dear
- 7:42Speaker 1: over living out of a hotel and seeing more dear.
- 7:44Speaker 1: This is the quintessential in my eyes, deer camp experience.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It's a it's a really cool place, a lot of history. Um,
- 7:54Speaker 1: kind of the old school Midwestern deer camp scenario. It's
- 7:59Speaker 1: hard to beat. I love it. It's great. Yeah, I
- 8:02Speaker 1: just didn't not that. I'm I'm new to Midwestern deer
- 8:05Speaker 1: camps on the grand scheme of things. But doesn't seem much.
- 8:08Speaker 1: You could get much more classic than looking at twenty
- 8:11Speaker 1: odd sets of horns here on the wall above the
- 8:14Speaker 1: wood stove and single room cabin. Yeah, you guys posted
- 8:19Speaker 1: a picture of the Wall of fame here on the
- 8:22Speaker 1: first Light Instagram account and someone comment and said that
- 8:25Speaker 1: it looks like a row of drumsticks. They weren't real
- 8:30Speaker 1: impressed with some of the some of the antlers on
- 8:33Speaker 1: the wall here. Yeah, different different places, different deer, different times,
- 8:38Speaker 1: different times. We got a bunch here on the wall
- 8:40Speaker 1: from the sixties. I see some seventy threes, I see
- 8:43Speaker 1: a sixty five. Um stretches the whole a whole lot
- 8:49Speaker 1: of time here. Um, Jordan, you've been you're a Minnesota guy,
- 8:54Speaker 1: did you ever get do you have a deer camp
- 8:56Speaker 1: type situation kind of like this anywhere that you partaket
- 8:59Speaker 1: in back in the day. Yeah. Yeah, My my grandparents
- 9:02Speaker 1: live in northern Minnesota, kind of northeastern Minnesota, so growing up,
- 9:06Speaker 1: ever since I was really little, would go up there.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I've actually had more of a trailer set up, but
- 9:12Speaker 1: it was still, you know, just kind of same deal,
- 9:14Speaker 1: no electricity, no running water. Tell stories about the big
- 9:18Speaker 1: bucks that you've seen in the past and probably not
- 9:21Speaker 1: see too terribly much during the days, and you actually
- 9:24Speaker 1: do go hunting. But it's those stories that I kind
- 9:27Speaker 1: of resonate for the good old days. Yeah, do you
- 9:30Speaker 1: think I always wonder like if the good old days
- 9:32Speaker 1: really were a thing or if it's just every generation
- 9:35Speaker 1: thinks that the good old days were good, Like thirty
- 9:38Speaker 1: years from now, are we're gonna be looking back at
- 9:39Speaker 1: this and go, those are the good old days? Um?
- 9:42Speaker 1: And it's just selective memory. I think there's enough history
- 9:47Speaker 1: on the wall that would show they did have some
- 9:49Speaker 1: good old days. Yes, I guess that's true. In this instance,
- 9:53Speaker 1: they've got some some proof to back it up. Man,
- 9:56Speaker 1: our neighbor. We're chatting with our neighbor the other day.
- 9:58Speaker 1: He stopped in too, have a couple of beverages with
- 10:01Speaker 1: us and chit chat, and he told us that he
- 10:03Speaker 1: saw six bucks out on the neighboring property here, two
- 10:08Speaker 1: of which were as big as our biggest buck on
- 10:10Speaker 1: the wall here. Two more Supposedly we're bigger. I'd like
- 10:15Speaker 1: to believe that. I'm gonna choose to believe that, especially
- 10:19Speaker 1: when it's your neighbors saying that. I definitely want to
- 10:21Speaker 1: believe that. Yeah, Well, it keeps you coming up here
- 10:24Speaker 1: and keeps you wanting to get out there in the
- 10:26Speaker 1: woods and you know, maybe run into one of them. Yeah,
- 10:29Speaker 1: so let's chat about the hunt real quick. Then me
- 10:33Speaker 1: and Jordan were hunting together, Jordan running the camera. I
- 10:37Speaker 1: was on the bow, and um, what we hunted? It's
- 10:42Speaker 1: pretty quick trip hunted one evening, one morning, another evening. Um,
- 10:47Speaker 1: do you want to you want to walk us through
- 10:49Speaker 1: what happened from your perspective from I'm curious what is
- 10:53Speaker 1: it like to hunt with me as a cameraman? Because
- 10:57Speaker 1: I was on the Mediator podcast a couple of weeks
- 10:59Speaker 1: ago and I was with a cameraman on that show.
- 11:03Speaker 1: He was filming me for their show, and he was
- 11:05Speaker 1: also on the podcast, and so he was like kind
- 11:07Speaker 1: of we're kind of all sharing stories about what that
- 11:09Speaker 1: was like. And Steve was talking about him and his
- 11:11Speaker 1: caraman dynamic, and I was chatting my caraman our dynamic.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And then someone on going back to Instagram comments someone
- 11:19Speaker 1: they had a whole spiel about how they thought that
- 11:21Speaker 1: I sound like a horrible person to have a chastise
- 11:25Speaker 1: and criticize my cameraman. I was actually gonna ask Jordan
- 11:29Speaker 1: how Mark Mark was me and doing at all. I
- 11:33Speaker 1: don't think we had a good time on the tree.
- 11:35Speaker 1: We liked it a lot. It was I mean, and
- 11:37Speaker 1: going back to it too. It's what I've grown up doing,
- 11:39Speaker 1: so it's you know, it's natural for me to climb
- 11:44Speaker 1: eighteen feet up in a tree and sit still for
- 11:46Speaker 1: hours out of time. And I mean, there definitely is
- 11:48Speaker 1: the aspect of still needing to do my job and
- 11:51Speaker 1: getting the shots that are needed, but try to try
- 11:55Speaker 1: to do my best to not screw everything up for
- 11:57Speaker 1: the guy with the boer gun. We're talking about the
- 12:00Speaker 1: dynamic cameraman messing up hunts these days, uh, and whether
- 12:04Speaker 1: it's better to have a cameraman first or hunter first
- 12:06Speaker 1: or both. But I've been on a lot of hunts
- 12:09Speaker 1: with Jordan. I can pretty confidently say he's never screwed
- 12:12Speaker 1: a hunt up in any way, shape or form that
- 12:14Speaker 1: I'm aware of. At least it's good, pretty good record.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I thought. I thought it was a pro real real quiet,
- 12:21Speaker 1: real still um so quiet, like I didn't even know
- 12:24Speaker 1: when he was filling around with the camera in pass situations.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Sometimes you hear like loud noises when they start filming
- 12:30Speaker 1: or starting to do something. I would never know it,
- 12:32Speaker 1: so I'd kind of turn around to start chatting with
- 12:34Speaker 1: him about something, and then there's that cameramera. I've actually
- 12:39Speaker 1: deemed Jordan is my good luck charm. Yeah, yeah, he's
- 12:42Speaker 1: been he's been hot for me the last year or so.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Here I've had in the tree than I have by myself.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I wish, I wish you would have brought that for
- 12:52Speaker 1: this strip. Fare Farrell used all the luck. Couldn't we
- 12:56Speaker 1: split him up? That was a problems So yeah, so
- 13:00Speaker 1: so sorry to continue. Tell us, tell us about your
- 13:03Speaker 1: perspective from the rest of the couple of days. What happened?
- 13:05Speaker 1: What do we see? Not not too terribly mud I
- 13:09Speaker 1: mean from a content perspective, content perspective, it was great, Um,
- 13:15Speaker 1: tell about what eight thirty this morning? Then little little
- 13:20Speaker 1: noise walking through the woods. Some des apparently didn't like
- 13:22Speaker 1: what they Yeah, coming down there, come down wind of us,
- 13:26Speaker 1: blow blowing him south Jordan. What's the sound of deer
- 13:28Speaker 1: Max When it's good good, it's it's earth shattering disappointment.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I don't know, we want to hear it. Yeah, you're
- 13:37Speaker 1: the sound effect man. And then you look at Mark
- 13:43Speaker 1: space the mouth noises from Yeah, what else do we
- 13:49Speaker 1: hear the trip bald eagle, what's your deem like the
- 13:52Speaker 1: sound effects guy, sound efect guy. Let's here, bald eagle. Oh,
- 13:56Speaker 1: I got it. Put me on the spot. Man, you
- 14:00Speaker 1: just did it. It was very good. I did, but
- 14:02Speaker 1: that was no pressure, and I was send in the
- 14:03Speaker 1: backseat of a truck. Now everybody's staring at me, and
- 14:05Speaker 1: my face is getting all red. Okay, nobody look at Jordan.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Nobody look everyone look at further. I'm not not going
- 14:13Speaker 1: to be able to crack it. I'm not gonna be
- 14:15Speaker 1: able to do it. No, what about the mallard, mate,
- 14:20Speaker 1: because we had mallards flying over us. Oh that's really good.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I'll try a bald eagle. That's now now absolutely better
- 14:36Speaker 1: than that. You'll lose much better than that. Something I
- 14:38Speaker 1: really want to be known for our thing just sound effects. Okay, Well,
- 14:41Speaker 1: at some point during this episode, I would really encourage
- 14:44Speaker 1: you to just jump in with the bald eagle when
- 14:46Speaker 1: you work your way up, when you're at least expecting
- 14:48Speaker 1: at all. Yeah, yeah, because that that is a cool sound. Actually,
- 14:51Speaker 1: we did see bald eagles, we saw mallards. We had
- 14:54Speaker 1: the four doughs come down and wind us, and that
- 14:58Speaker 1: was kind of it. Unfortunately, although so pretty good must
- 15:02Speaker 1: sign really good sign A bunch of scrapes around the
- 15:05Speaker 1: spots we hunted the first day and morning, and then
- 15:08Speaker 1: this evening I got thinking, well, like my traditional little
- 15:10Speaker 1: honey hole here excuse me, has never been the same
- 15:13Speaker 1: since further hunted it. That's true, It is true because
- 15:18Speaker 1: usually this is the spot I always hunt, and we
- 15:20Speaker 1: mentioned this last time we were here. Josh got here
- 15:23Speaker 1: day earliest. I said, he you can you hunt the
- 15:25Speaker 1: food plots, and so he went and hunted it. You
- 15:27Speaker 1: saw three bucks and there's not been a dear scene
- 15:30Speaker 1: since acting normally walking through there. What can I say?
- 15:34Speaker 1: I know how to keep him away? Yes, So so
- 15:38Speaker 1: then though this evening I was like, you know what,
- 15:40Speaker 1: let's just go check out a new area um that
- 15:42Speaker 1: I haven't hunted in a very long time and just
- 15:44Speaker 1: kind of hanging hunt, just scout our way in and
- 15:46Speaker 1: try to find something. And there was freshmen down on
- 15:47Speaker 1: the ground, so I was hoping, you know, maybe we
- 15:51Speaker 1: could cut a fresh track and set up on that
- 15:53Speaker 1: and see if something might come back through. This afternoon
- 15:57Speaker 1: and took us a long longer time to find some
- 16:00Speaker 1: fresh sign that I was hoping. But we did finally
- 16:04Speaker 1: work our way far back to the north, up through
- 16:07Speaker 1: this kind of high ground area towards the swamp. There's
- 16:10Speaker 1: there's a creek that runs and we angle our way
- 16:12Speaker 1: that way, and Um, just before we got to that creek,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I was trying to make my way kind of angling
- 16:16Speaker 1: towards this flooded area a long time ago. There's a
- 16:20Speaker 1: bunch of beavers in the area, flooded up, dammed up
- 16:23Speaker 1: with this creek and large flooded area that now is
- 16:26Speaker 1: a lot of dead trees and cattails and all that
- 16:28Speaker 1: kind of stuff. And I think there's a decent amount
- 16:30Speaker 1: of activity along that kind of trend that habitat transition.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And um, so we're kind of angling towards that, and
- 16:36Speaker 1: then I happened to see what looked like like an
- 16:38Speaker 1: oval patch where there was no snow. I don't know
- 16:41Speaker 1: if you noticed, but we were walking. I stopped and
- 16:43Speaker 1: pulled my binoculars because I just caught this, like it
- 16:45Speaker 1: looks like a bed, and UM pulled up the buyos
- 16:48Speaker 1: and sure enough had to be a bed, and so
- 16:50Speaker 1: we walked over to it, and sure enough, there's two
- 16:52Speaker 1: beds there some fresh tracks, so I figured, okay, we
- 16:55Speaker 1: probably bumped a couple of doughs out of their beds
- 16:57Speaker 1: when we were walking in here. So then we stood
- 16:59Speaker 1: around for a little bit and I'm thinking, wow, I mean,
- 17:02Speaker 1: this isn't a buck bed. I'm surprised bumped a couple
- 17:05Speaker 1: of those, but it is the first time we've seen
- 17:07Speaker 1: a deer in the area at all, and you know,
- 17:08Speaker 1: it might be a sign of a little bit more
- 17:11Speaker 1: going on. So I thought, well, let's let's move up
- 17:13Speaker 1: kind of up wind of this little stretch of pines.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Let's patch high ground, see what else we see. So
- 17:18Speaker 1: we slowly snuck our way around here, and um, as
- 17:22Speaker 1: we come around the edge again along this transition between
- 17:24Speaker 1: you can see the cattails and then there's this high
- 17:26Speaker 1: patch with some pines on it. And as we're coming
- 17:28Speaker 1: along that line, I know it's a little rub tiny,
- 17:32Speaker 1: tiny little tree, and I got, well, hey, that's I
- 17:35Speaker 1: guess it's something. And then we're standing there kind of
- 17:38Speaker 1: looking at it and just kind of perusing the scene
- 17:40Speaker 1: around us, like, oh, there's another one, a little bigger tree.
- 17:43Speaker 1: We go walk over to that. I'm like, okay, now
- 17:45Speaker 1: we're seeing something. Oh, here's some more fresh tracks. And
- 17:48Speaker 1: then while we're standing there, oh there's a nice rub.
- 17:51Speaker 1: It's a big rub, went way up tall on the
- 17:54Speaker 1: scale of that one. So we're looking at that. I'm like, man,
- 17:56Speaker 1: that's a good rub for around here. And then I'm
- 17:59Speaker 1: like that that can't be what I think it is.
- 18:02Speaker 1: And I go take a step around. There's a big
- 18:04Speaker 1: pine tree that's like six inches in diameter maybe, and
- 18:07Speaker 1: that sucker was rubbed up. I've never seen tree that
- 18:10Speaker 1: big rubbed up up here before. Um, so then I
- 18:14Speaker 1: was excited, like we just found like a little zone.
- 18:17Speaker 1: What what what kind of screamed up to me is
- 18:19Speaker 1: like a buck betting area. This could be a little patch. Mean,
- 18:21Speaker 1: it's kind of a prototypical little buck beed, kind of spotty.
- 18:24Speaker 1: You're on a little bit of a point that kind
- 18:26Speaker 1: of extends into that stuff, a little bit of high ground,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and um, with all these rubs concentrate on hilaria, that
- 18:33Speaker 1: seemed to scream out good spot. So we're like, oh, well,
- 18:37Speaker 1: you know, if there was something better to here, we
- 18:39Speaker 1: definitely bumped it. But um, we got nothing better to do,
- 18:41Speaker 1: might as well set up and try to hunt it.
- 18:43Speaker 1: And that's what we did, I wouldn't call that approach stealthy.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Walk in there crunchy, super crunchy. Lots of lots of
- 18:51Speaker 1: standing water that was frozen and there's just no way
- 18:53Speaker 1: to get through there without crunching ice. And long story short,
- 18:57Speaker 1: we did not see a deer to night. But you know,
- 19:01Speaker 1: you cut fresh snacks, fresh tracks there right there, Yes, yep,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and he was did you think they were buck or
- 19:06Speaker 1: dough tracks? And there were a bunch of tracks. Did
- 19:08Speaker 1: not end up cutting the buck. But because of the rubs,
- 19:10Speaker 1: we were hoping that well, you know, there's a lot
- 19:12Speaker 1: of area around there. We didn't walk around yet maybe
- 19:14Speaker 1: there there had been. Um, so we didn't see any deer.
- 19:17Speaker 1: But what we did see, we're two birds, one with
- 19:22Speaker 1: a white head, and it sounded like something something like that. Closer,
- 19:29Speaker 1: it's closer than marks, a little higher pitched you had
- 19:34Speaker 1: you had a last time, a little bit. But that
- 19:36Speaker 1: was good twitter. Um. Yeah, so that was our deer hunt, Greg,
- 19:43Speaker 1: Your deer hunt wasn't too terribly different. No, it's similar.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I um did uh kind of a hanging hunt the
- 19:50Speaker 1: first night. Um further put me onto a good spot
- 19:53Speaker 1: where he had seen decent Buck a couple weeks ago.
- 19:57Speaker 1: So we kind of went in there and picked us
- 20:00Speaker 1: out closer to where that deer had walked through, and
- 20:03Speaker 1: you guys had a camera over there. So no, there's
- 20:06Speaker 1: good deer movement in the area. Got a set hung
- 20:08Speaker 1: and it's at the first evening and it was quiet. Um,
- 20:13Speaker 1: we get a little bit of a cold front. I
- 20:15Speaker 1: mean it was cold already, but a little bit of
- 20:17Speaker 1: a cold front coming through that evening, it seemed like
- 20:19Speaker 1: because that next morning it was, which was this morning
- 20:22Speaker 1: is pretty chilly. Yeah, and ended up seeing four dos
- 20:26Speaker 1: five dolls this morning. Um, they kind of worked through.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I think it was the same group that kind of
- 20:31Speaker 1: scooted by you guys, moved on towards me, and then
- 20:35Speaker 1: end up setting the same set. Want to give that
- 20:37Speaker 1: set one more try to night again. It's quiet, but
- 20:40Speaker 1: it's I mean typical kind of for when I used
- 20:44Speaker 1: to the north Woods, low deer densities, but awesome country.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I mean, about as beautiful as you can get in
- 20:51Speaker 1: terms of a set. Yeah, I mean it is. It's
- 20:53Speaker 1: pretty conscript here. Yeah. Can I interject a quick question? Yeah,
- 20:58Speaker 1: when people talk about seeing you know, you just said
- 21:01Speaker 1: you saw four dos or five doughs? Which five doughs,
- 21:04Speaker 1: four doughs, It doesn't matter, that's not the point of
- 21:06Speaker 1: the question. Is that imply that you saw four Antler
- 21:10Speaker 1: lists deer? Because I guess where I'm going, it's often
- 21:13Speaker 1: I'll see four you know, where I grew up, white Tail,
- 21:17Speaker 1: and I'd see four or five Antler lists deer, likely
- 21:20Speaker 1: one or two of which would be actually a button buck.
- 21:25Speaker 1: When people say I saw four dos, are you saying
- 21:28Speaker 1: that you actually saw four confirmed doughs? Are you saying
- 21:31Speaker 1: are you using that as shorthand for four Antler lists? Dear?
- 21:34Speaker 1: It's a good question for uh. I find myself lots
- 21:38Speaker 1: of times. My initial gut reaction is the latter. I'll
- 21:42Speaker 1: say I saw four dos, but it's actually maybe two
- 21:44Speaker 1: mature doughs and a couple of fawns, one of which
- 21:46Speaker 1: maybe was button buck almost a dough I don't know.
- 21:48Speaker 1: And then sometimes they'll be like, well, actually two or
- 21:51Speaker 1: button bucks two or dos or something like. But I
- 21:53Speaker 1: often do find myself defaulting to antler lists, just call
- 21:57Speaker 1: them does. Yeah, I don't know. Is that is that
- 21:59Speaker 1: the norm? For what's your think? I would say, um,
- 22:03Speaker 1: you're the one that brought it up just now. No, no no, no,
- 22:05Speaker 1: that used to sometimes sometimes that's definitely the case, especially
- 22:08Speaker 1: when they moved through quick. You don't get a good
- 22:10Speaker 1: look at him. But um, the last I don't know,
- 22:13Speaker 1: probably five or six years, I've really tried to even
- 22:17Speaker 1: when I see ant Loo's deer get on my bin
- 22:19Speaker 1: and I wasn't confirm if they were does or potentially
- 22:22Speaker 1: button bucks. Um, this group actually worked through it probably yards.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I was able to get a good look at them, um,
- 22:28Speaker 1: and it was definitely all all does. But yeah, that's
- 22:32Speaker 1: a good point, especially they moved through quick. You know,
- 22:35Speaker 1: if they're not close something, it can be hard to tell.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Swish it the naked eye. Have any of you guys
- 22:39Speaker 1: ever killed a button buck mistakenly? I haven't. Now try
- 22:44Speaker 1: and check a little bit closer. It hasn't happened to
- 22:47Speaker 1: me yet, but I've always you know, I was fear
- 22:49Speaker 1: of that. Yeah, I was really scouring it and just
- 22:52Speaker 1: like kind of my eyes playing tricks on me. Am.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I sure that's a dope, but it happened so often
- 22:56Speaker 1: it seems like further, have you done that. I've not
- 23:00Speaker 1: done that, But I'm in the same bone as Greg, Like, um,
- 23:03Speaker 1: if they just go through real quick and I can't
- 23:05Speaker 1: identify them, you know, four does or whatever. But if
- 23:09Speaker 1: I'm able to get my buyos up and and really
- 23:12Speaker 1: see him and identify the mom I saw a button
- 23:14Speaker 1: buck or um. But yeah, I have not shot a
- 23:17Speaker 1: button buck. But to your point, it does happen all
- 23:20Speaker 1: the time. Knock on wood. Yeah, do season for you
- 23:24Speaker 1: on me is starting here pretty soon. How many does
- 23:27Speaker 1: do you want to get this year? Josh um? I
- 23:30Speaker 1: would like to shoot too, just for my personal An
- 23:35Speaker 1: interesting point we're talking about earlier. So how many deer
- 23:38Speaker 1: do you usually too? Is that what you two to three?
- 23:43Speaker 1: My wife and I we usually to have at least
- 23:46Speaker 1: like four. As long as we've got four, we're okay.
- 23:49Speaker 1: But if I don't have four and it's like late December,
- 23:51Speaker 1: my wife is on me. I get out there in
- 23:53Speaker 1: hunt does. What are you doing? We need me gotta
- 23:56Speaker 1: have four minimum? So you're doing four minimum, two of you?
- 23:58Speaker 1: And in what percent job your animal proteins game? Would
- 24:02Speaker 1: you say? Oh? I mean there's the occasional store bought
- 24:07Speaker 1: chicken very rarely. Otherwise I said um, and then we
- 24:11Speaker 1: do um in the past word by like half a
- 24:14Speaker 1: hog from an Amish farmer for some work. Um, but
- 24:19Speaker 1: red meat and four yeah dough units. Yes, and sometimes
- 24:26Speaker 1: you know, if I'm lucky certain years like caribou had
- 24:29Speaker 1: a cariboo in their last year side of cariboo in
- 24:31Speaker 1: four dos or no sorry caribou and four deer. Well,
- 24:35Speaker 1: I guess in the last year was all though, because
- 24:36Speaker 1: I didn't kill a buck last year. This year, I've
- 24:38Speaker 1: got a little left haar of cariboo. I've got two
- 24:40Speaker 1: bucks and um, still eating some venison from last year,
- 24:44Speaker 1: but would like to get a minimum with two more. Um.
- 24:47Speaker 1: What about you, Greg, I think you were the guy
- 24:49Speaker 1: who like caught me off guard with how many of
- 24:51Speaker 1: you putting that? Yeah, there's a big number. Yeah, I
- 24:53Speaker 1: typically that's kind of interesting. We're doing some like body
- 24:57Speaker 1: mass math last ye. But um, from a white tails perspective, um,
- 25:03Speaker 1: I like to put about six in the freezer every year. Um.
- 25:08Speaker 1: And I'm with Mark. I mean I'm nine nine wild
- 25:13Speaker 1: game consumption. I haven't fortunately, I haven't really had to
- 25:18Speaker 1: go out and purchased meat other than that, just because
- 25:21Speaker 1: that's what I choose to eat. But um, I also
- 25:23Speaker 1: have a lot of family members and friends who really
- 25:26Speaker 1: enjoy the Venison two and I like to be able
- 25:27Speaker 1: to gifted to them and like to be generous with Yeah. Yeah,
- 25:30Speaker 1: it's nice to have like a cushion quarreling it away.
- 25:35Speaker 1: But I've found even with you know, whether it's actually
- 25:37Speaker 1: six white tails or if you do the math and
- 25:40Speaker 1: figure out all Okay, I got a cow out this year,
- 25:42Speaker 1: a meal deer and kind of figuring that much protein
- 25:46Speaker 1: or meat per se um. The freezer will be empty
- 25:48Speaker 1: come September October this fall and white tail buck by
- 25:54Speaker 1: missing something else and then two white tailed dozes here.
- 25:58Speaker 1: So how it's it's it's every single meal are you
- 26:04Speaker 1: punching in? Like breakfast venison, lunch, venison, dinner venison? So
- 26:08Speaker 1: I feel like we're more like one venison meal if
- 26:14Speaker 1: even a night, maybe like four nights a week, maybe
- 26:16Speaker 1: five nights a week. Yeah, I bet we'd eat venus
- 26:19Speaker 1: in four to five nights a week. Yeah, But I'm
- 26:23Speaker 1: with you, We're I would say we're game. Yeah, I'm definitely.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I mean it, don't get me wrong. I mean I'll
- 26:30Speaker 1: go out, go out to dinner on Friday Saturday night
- 26:32Speaker 1: and have a burger, you know whatever. But um, other
- 26:35Speaker 1: than uh, you know, the maybe weekly going out to
- 26:38Speaker 1: dinner one night a week. It's the other six nights
- 26:41Speaker 1: or venison. I'm not very good at cooking for like
- 26:44Speaker 1: small groups. It's like one or two or three. So
- 26:47Speaker 1: typically I'll make like a huge dinner, whether it's massive
- 26:51Speaker 1: pot of chili, big old roast, even you know, steaks.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I'll throw eight on the grill and then that becomes
- 26:57Speaker 1: dinner for that night, a little bit of left for breakfast,
- 27:00Speaker 1: something to launch the next day, and then roll it over.
- 27:03Speaker 1: But I mean more often than not. Yeah, it's it's
- 27:06Speaker 1: part of three meals a day. I would say for myself,
- 27:08Speaker 1: it's a good way to live. I like it. I don't.
- 27:12Speaker 1: What's your number four? You know, we're still figuring our
- 27:15Speaker 1: equivalent out, I'd say, Um, we actually we had one
- 27:18Speaker 1: deer last year, which is slam for sure. Stretch that
- 27:22Speaker 1: with a lot of land pills, I'd say, but it
- 27:25Speaker 1: sounds like a horrible term just personally from my opinion. Um,
- 27:30Speaker 1: I think I think where I want to be is
- 27:32Speaker 1: about an elk and a deer a year. Seems that's
- 27:37Speaker 1: what that's what we got right now. We're gonna have
- 27:39Speaker 1: a little bis in here. It looks like hopefully if
- 27:41Speaker 1: things go well, and then I think, yeah, probably elk
- 27:46Speaker 1: and deer by the time we've give them some away,
- 27:48Speaker 1: probably a full elk and a deer. Can you talk
- 27:50Speaker 1: about that bison thing or is that? Yeah? I think
- 27:53Speaker 1: so dog's not here, so no, he doesn't know we're
- 27:56Speaker 1: giving away so the store and that because a bison
- 27:59Speaker 1: hunt is a pretty very unique Yeah, I'm actually I
- 28:03Speaker 1: will I'll leave out what hunt it is because I
- 28:04Speaker 1: don't want to draw my change the draws for myself
- 28:08Speaker 1: next year because my buddy drew it. He's actually his
- 28:12Speaker 1: hunting list so far, which I think hasn't been entirely
- 28:17Speaker 1: with me. I was with him when he shot his
- 28:19Speaker 1: first white tail, which was a button buck which he
- 28:21Speaker 1: wasn't supposed to shoot. Story he went from the button
- 28:26Speaker 1: buck to ah this uh d I y shammy hunt
- 28:31Speaker 1: we did in New Zealand on public land. So he
- 28:34Speaker 1: went to right right to the mountain mountain hunt from there,
- 28:37Speaker 1: and uh he did. He has done some Colorado l
- 28:40Speaker 1: hunting unsuccessfully in between, but then he went ahead and
- 28:43Speaker 1: drew a um a bison tag in the West this
- 28:47Speaker 1: year on the first year he put in. I think
- 28:50Speaker 1: as as he tends to do it seems like, and
- 28:53Speaker 1: uh so yeah it we'll be we'll be doing a
- 28:54Speaker 1: little bison hunt here in about two weeks, I think.
- 28:57Speaker 1: And what's your role that uh uh porter guy, yeah,
- 29:04Speaker 1: camp manage, yeah, support all the and I think certainly
- 29:10Speaker 1: packing out it's gonna be. Yeah. So you were telling
- 29:12Speaker 1: me you had some ideas about how you might because
- 29:15Speaker 1: this is a very large animal. Very large animal is
- 29:18Speaker 1: it is a cow taggy drew but I believe I
- 29:22Speaker 1: don't want to. I think cows away between maybe a
- 29:25Speaker 1: thousand and twelve pounds still as opposed to thousand I
- 29:29Speaker 1: think for a bowl. Um, So getting it out it's
- 29:32Speaker 1: definitely a challenge. Um. The plan, the running plan right now,
- 29:35Speaker 1: which may be foolish and may not be is too
- 29:39Speaker 1: um either tore in on touring skis to hunt, which
- 29:43Speaker 1: you know skis with skins, um shoot the thing and
- 29:47Speaker 1: then sort of skid it out on load sleds um
- 29:51Speaker 1: which load sleds which are used typically for haul and
- 29:54Speaker 1: gear into back country ski huts, um out on the snow.
- 29:59Speaker 1: At least that's our running plan right now. I'm not
- 30:01Speaker 1: really sure. The good thing is there's a there's an
- 30:03Speaker 1: extraction service. If stuff hits the fan, proverbly, we can
- 30:08Speaker 1: call and they bring a draft horse out and they'll
- 30:11Speaker 1: pack it out. I think we're gonna try and avoid
- 30:13Speaker 1: doing that just because of the expense. But if we
- 30:15Speaker 1: get in a pinch or what have you, or the
- 30:17Speaker 1: snow is not deep enough for our plan to play out,
- 30:20Speaker 1: I think we'll have their phone number. Also kind of
- 30:23Speaker 1: nice as a backup plan for sure. I'd like the
- 30:26Speaker 1: sled idea. Yeah, well, we'll see, we'll see. It depends
- 30:29Speaker 1: the area we're gonna be hunting them in. In In theory
- 30:31Speaker 1: is I don't think super super it's kind of in
- 30:34Speaker 1: a valley, in a rural, mountainous area. Um So in
- 30:38Speaker 1: my head, it's like flatish and dragging stuff around on
- 30:41Speaker 1: sliders with skis. It's going to be possible, but it
- 30:44Speaker 1: could certainly be the kind of thing when you get
- 30:46Speaker 1: there and it's just totally not an option. Yeah, like
- 30:48Speaker 1: what happens when you got a downhill and you've got
- 30:51Speaker 1: four pounds of meat that's sliding down behind you. Yeah, yeah,
- 30:57Speaker 1: we'll figure that out. I think it'll I think it'll
- 31:01Speaker 1: work okay, But yeah, I mean and certainly I think
- 31:04Speaker 1: do you ride the sled down. Do you just sit
- 31:05Speaker 1: on the sled? I think you kind of cruise down,
- 31:08Speaker 1: because going downhill with climbing skins on your skis is
- 31:11Speaker 1: also kind of not a not a positive outcome either,
- 31:15Speaker 1: So I think you try and avoid super steep stuff.
- 31:17Speaker 1: And I also think I doubt will be you know,
- 31:20Speaker 1: I imagine us putting a rear quarter that maybe weighs
- 31:23Speaker 1: two pounds on the sled and going a piece. Yeah,
- 31:26Speaker 1: I don't think we're gonna, you know, try and get
- 31:28Speaker 1: half half the bison on the on the sled at
- 31:32Speaker 1: one time, I think. But again, it's all it's gonna
- 31:35Speaker 1: be a big learning experience. I think just even breaking
- 31:38Speaker 1: one down it's gonna be that's really interesting. A lot
- 31:41Speaker 1: of have on blades. I think you're going to be
- 31:44Speaker 1: very intrigued. You're saying, like, how do you even gut bison? Yeah,
- 31:48Speaker 1: whether you pull the two quarters off the uphill side,
- 31:51Speaker 1: so to speak, or the exposed side and then you
- 31:54Speaker 1: pull the guts out. I mean I can only see
- 31:55Speaker 1: myself like entering the bis in rib cage trying to
- 31:58Speaker 1: pull the guts and whatnot out, So I don't I
- 32:03Speaker 1: don't know how it's gonna go. It'll be an adventure
- 32:05Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah, exactly. Um, jeez, Jordan, what's your
- 32:10Speaker 1: dear number of the freezer? I bet, between my wife
- 32:14Speaker 1: and I probably do about two a year. Yeah, this
- 32:18Speaker 1: year is kind of a frantic experience. This summer in July,
- 32:22Speaker 1: I lost my chest freezer. So, yeah, you told me
- 32:26Speaker 1: about that. Yeah, that's the worst night there, I can
- 32:29Speaker 1: imagine the most sick I think I've ever felt about
- 32:31Speaker 1: anything like that. It was miserable just going into the
- 32:34Speaker 1: garage after a weekend away with family coming back and
- 32:39Speaker 1: smelling and then kind of knowing before he even open
- 32:41Speaker 1: the freezer, what what's going on in there? That that
- 32:45Speaker 1: event single handedly caused me to go out, And by
- 32:48Speaker 1: go out, I guess in this day and age, it
- 32:49Speaker 1: means go on to Amazon and purchase a freezer or alarm. Yes,
- 32:54Speaker 1: I never knew there was a thing until you told
- 32:55Speaker 1: me about. Yeah. Yeah, I think I sold a few
- 32:57Speaker 1: of them after telling the story, but bought one too. Yeah.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I guess I don't know too terribly much about them,
- 33:03Speaker 1: but um, the one that I'm looking into at least
- 33:05Speaker 1: is kind of like temperature regulated, so if it yeah,
- 33:08Speaker 1: if it gets up above a certain degree in the freezer.
- 33:12Speaker 1: It'll let you know so you can go check it
- 33:13Speaker 1: before anything gets Yeah, it's it's real basic. It was
- 33:16Speaker 1: twenty or thirty bucks. This is almost like I feel
- 33:18Speaker 1: like this is a sales pitch for the three yea
- 33:22Speaker 1: UM And it's essentially it's got a remote unit that
- 33:25Speaker 1: goes into the freezer, sits in there, and then it
- 33:29Speaker 1: wirelessly connects to a little thermostatic looking deal that you
- 33:33Speaker 1: know is in my kitchen and it tells me room
- 33:36Speaker 1: temperature is sixty two and freezer temperature is negative five
- 33:40Speaker 1: right now. And if the freezer hits you can program
- 33:43Speaker 1: the number I think minds twenty degrees. It starts beeping
- 33:47Speaker 1: and you know, the most irritating of ways and lets
- 33:50Speaker 1: you know that something's something's amiss are the ones they
- 33:54Speaker 1: can get that like goes your phone. There are yes, definitely,
- 33:59Speaker 1: I mean they go up and open up for sure
- 34:00Speaker 1: in terms of I think quality and whatnot, Like a
- 34:03Speaker 1: near scenario, you weren't home so you wouldn't hear it. Yeah, exactly,
- 34:06Speaker 1: like exactly, And yeah, I mean I guess it's kind
- 34:09Speaker 1: of changed my program too, because before that I had
- 34:12Speaker 1: probably only been checking the freezer once a week, you know,
- 34:15Speaker 1: so even if it was only a couple of days,
- 34:18Speaker 1: I probably could have saved it. But yeah, so now
- 34:20Speaker 1: I will definitely be a little bit more paranoid checking
- 34:23Speaker 1: every single time I walked by it. I actually had
- 34:26Speaker 1: that happen to me that first the first year ever,
- 34:28Speaker 1: that shot. Oh yeah, but when I'm still living at home,
- 34:32Speaker 1: like right after college, and my dad had had unplugged
- 34:36Speaker 1: something in the garage. Yeah, thank you. My dad had
- 34:40Speaker 1: unplugged something to the garage and he unplugged the wrong
- 34:42Speaker 1: chord and he unplugged the freezer, and it was did
- 34:46Speaker 1: you resent him for that? I was pissed for a while.
- 34:49Speaker 1: That was your first year, the first first year, and
- 34:52Speaker 1: his dad's freezing. It was just a horrible feeling, and
- 34:55Speaker 1: he felt he felt really really bad. So now looking back,
- 34:59Speaker 1: I was fel bad that I was. I was pretty
- 35:01Speaker 1: hard on him about it, really hard on him. And
- 35:03Speaker 1: I feel bad now because I know how bad he
- 35:05Speaker 1: felt about it. No, No, are used me and to
- 35:09Speaker 1: your dad as we heard of my dad. No, we're
- 35:14Speaker 1: not mean to your dad. We just we just like that.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I don't I we were telling these guys back in
- 35:19Speaker 1: the day. We always used to go to your house,
- 35:21Speaker 1: you know, we in high school or college. We go out,
- 35:23Speaker 1: you know, doing whatever we do late at night with
- 35:26Speaker 1: our friends and stuff. And um Josh's house was like
- 35:30Speaker 1: a friendly place to crash after the evening. That was
- 35:33Speaker 1: like because basement was a good place, was centrally located.
- 35:36Speaker 1: You knew it would be open and available. So we all,
- 35:39Speaker 1: me and a bunch of our buddies would all go
- 35:40Speaker 1: and we all crash at your house tonight. And your
- 35:43Speaker 1: dad is just like Greg and that he could be
- 35:46Speaker 1: like he could be talking and then seconds later, mid
- 35:49Speaker 1: conversation's just be passed out. I can't tell you how
- 35:52Speaker 1: many times my dad has just passed out mid conversation
- 35:55Speaker 1: with me. Yeah, And then the cool thing about your
- 35:58Speaker 1: dad those when he passes out. I feel like this
- 35:59Speaker 1: is and you tell me if this is not accurate,
- 36:02Speaker 1: but I feel like every time I've ever seen him sleeping,
- 36:04Speaker 1: I've seen him sleeping many times having come over to
- 36:07Speaker 1: your house like this, He's always storing with his mouth
- 36:10Speaker 1: wide open, I mean wide open mouth. His belly is
- 36:14Speaker 1: just heathing up and down. He listened to this sometimes
- 36:19Speaker 1: take it easy. And we used to used to have
- 36:22Speaker 1: a big husky dog and we would take big dog
- 36:25Speaker 1: biscuits and stick him your dad's mouth and your dog
- 36:28Speaker 1: would jump up and start friends kissing them in the biscuits,
- 36:31Speaker 1: like jump right on his belly, and my dad freak out,
- 36:36Speaker 1: lunge up. We gave him a hard time about them.
- 36:40Speaker 1: We're pretty mean. Never gets old. I love thinking about
- 36:44Speaker 1: that every time. UM. Now I don't know where I
- 36:48Speaker 1: was going ahead and plan in my head, and we
- 36:49Speaker 1: still start talking about Frank and further almost thrown off UM,
- 36:57Speaker 1: which brings me back to Greg and the fact that
- 37:01Speaker 1: you guys are here. That was pretty cool. You guys
- 37:03Speaker 1: reached out and we're interested in spending some time together. Um.
- 37:07Speaker 1: You know, started started working with first Light this year,
- 37:10Speaker 1: which has been a cool experience getting to know everyone
- 37:12Speaker 1: a little bit a little bit better. But the fact
- 37:14Speaker 1: that you guys have have reached out pretty proactively quite
- 37:17Speaker 1: a bit to get you know, some thoughts for me
- 37:21Speaker 1: on some of the gear and UM, get to test
- 37:24Speaker 1: out some different things and then to to spend some
- 37:27Speaker 1: you know, quality time like this. I was I was
- 37:30Speaker 1: excited about that. UM. From your guys perspective, you know what,
- 37:33Speaker 1: what were you guys hoping to achieve you know, here
- 37:38Speaker 1: doing this and it definitely seems like you guys are
- 37:40Speaker 1: prioritizing what we've got going on here in the white
- 37:42Speaker 1: Tail world. Yeah, absolutely so, Um, you know, for for
- 37:49Speaker 1: a while now, and I don't this is not a
- 37:51Speaker 1: recent thing. I mean, we've been making gear that we've
- 37:55Speaker 1: used in the white Tail would since two thousand seven.
- 37:58Speaker 1: And you know, from at inception of the company that
- 38:02Speaker 1: the Ethos has always been making super versatile gear that
- 38:06Speaker 1: will you know, keep you comfortable in a wide variety
- 38:09Speaker 1: of situations. And you know, initially that offering, that spattering
- 38:14Speaker 1: of gear was it was smaller than it is now.
- 38:16Speaker 1: You know, as a startup company. We've grown a lot
- 38:19Speaker 1: since then. Um, but to that point, we've also you know,
- 38:24Speaker 1: we've grown to a point now where you know, previously
- 38:29Speaker 1: the offerings that we had, like I said, we're very
- 38:32Speaker 1: versatile and you could use them east to west, and
- 38:34Speaker 1: we still believe that's true. I mean, the Ethos and
- 38:37Speaker 1: most of our design is to design very versatile pieces
- 38:40Speaker 1: that can be used anywhere. But that being said, Um,
- 38:44Speaker 1: you know, I'm a Wisconsin guy. I grew up in
- 38:47Speaker 1: the Bid West and cut my teeth in white tails,
- 38:49Speaker 1: there's something to be said for somewhat specialized pieces for
- 38:53Speaker 1: specific use cases. UM. And we know that we know
- 38:58Speaker 1: that about the West, we know about the East, we
- 39:00Speaker 1: know that about the Midwest, and a big push for us,
- 39:03Speaker 1: you know, I would say since probably deals and thirteen
- 39:08Speaker 1: when we really started coming out with some specific white
- 39:10Speaker 1: tail gears to continue to push that movement. And we
- 39:14Speaker 1: really want to do the same thing we've done with
- 39:17Speaker 1: our Western gear in the white tail space, and that
- 39:19Speaker 1: is create products that are revolutionary. We have really no
- 39:23Speaker 1: intention on copying what's out there or making things very
- 39:28Speaker 1: similar to what's out there. We want to take you know,
- 39:31Speaker 1: what we've done in our entire company and all the
- 39:35Speaker 1: products that we've released and focus some of that attention
- 39:38Speaker 1: and some of that product development and some of that
- 39:42Speaker 1: you know, desire to push the boundaries specifically in this
- 39:46Speaker 1: white tail space because we think that the groom to
- 39:48Speaker 1: do that, UM. And a big part of you know,
- 39:51Speaker 1: why we've reached out to you and want to spend
- 39:54Speaker 1: some time with you is, you know, we know we
- 39:55Speaker 1: can get a lot more done in a few days
- 39:58Speaker 1: of talking face to face and hunting together and you know,
- 40:03Speaker 1: talking chopper on a cool camp like this about things
- 40:06Speaker 1: that we want, things that you want, you know, where
- 40:09Speaker 1: you see that we can improve, where we think we
- 40:11Speaker 1: can improve, and you know, knock heads for a few
- 40:14Speaker 1: days and stuff like that, and we can get a
- 40:15Speaker 1: lot done. And our goal is to you know, there's
- 40:19Speaker 1: very few guys that spend as many days in a
- 40:21Speaker 1: tree stand as you do. And who better to reference
- 40:24Speaker 1: or to reach out to you or to knock heads
- 40:27Speaker 1: with on the stuff than something like that. Yeah, well,
- 40:29Speaker 1: I I appreciate, you know, the opportunity to do that
- 40:32Speaker 1: and get to, you know, share my perspective and everything.
- 40:34Speaker 1: And I've always thought whether it be product feedback or
- 40:38Speaker 1: just deer hunting knowledge or something I've never ever thought of,
- 40:42Speaker 1: like me in my perspective being all that terribly important
- 40:46Speaker 1: or useful. But I do get a unique opportunity to
- 40:50Speaker 1: talk to so many different people, all these different people
- 40:53Speaker 1: that spend a whole lot of time in the woods
- 40:55Speaker 1: that are really good at what they do, and I
- 40:56Speaker 1: get a silk and all that, and I feel like
- 40:59Speaker 1: if I'm help well any kind of way, I think
- 41:01Speaker 1: it's just by like being a conduit for all these
- 41:03Speaker 1: other people's information and getting to people. So I think
- 41:05Speaker 1: maybe that's if if I can be helpful, all it
- 41:08Speaker 1: might be in that way, I can get a lot
- 41:09Speaker 1: of different people's feedback to you guys, And I think
- 41:11Speaker 1: that's I've been trying to do a little bit, and
- 41:12Speaker 1: that's that's cool. Yeah, I definitely think that's true. And
- 41:16Speaker 1: you know I agree with that, um. And I think
- 41:20Speaker 1: ultimately for any of these pieces that we design and
- 41:22Speaker 1: that we're trying to bring to market, really, in my eyes,
- 41:26Speaker 1: you know, as a product guy, where we can make
- 41:28Speaker 1: strides and where we can make improvements is talking to,
- 41:33Speaker 1: working with and being a part of a spattering of
- 41:38Speaker 1: people that spent a lot of days in the field.
- 41:41Speaker 1: You know, I know for myself, Um, you know, I,
- 41:45Speaker 1: like I said, group in the Midwest, spent a fair
- 41:47Speaker 1: amount of time out West. Have recently relocated back to
- 41:50Speaker 1: the Midwest. Um. You know, I know for myself in
- 41:54Speaker 1: those years that I was specifically living out West, I
- 41:58Speaker 1: would still get back and you know, I get ten, twelve,
- 42:01Speaker 1: fourteen days in a tree. But when you get that
- 42:04Speaker 1: number of days in a tree, your focus is on
- 42:07Speaker 1: just getting the job done. You know, my focus was on, Hey,
- 42:10Speaker 1: I'm here for a short amount of time. I'm really
- 42:13Speaker 1: focused on hunting, you know, the rut. I'd love to
- 42:16Speaker 1: kill a good buck, X, Y and Z. You know,
- 42:19Speaker 1: when you're present in a specific white tail space for
- 42:24Speaker 1: an entire season. You know, but we're early December now, right,
- 42:27Speaker 1: most of us started hunting sitting in a tree in
- 42:30Speaker 1: mid September, early October. You know, when you get that
- 42:34Speaker 1: forty fifty days in a tree, your focus changes a
- 42:37Speaker 1: little bit and it's much less. Hey I need to
- 42:40Speaker 1: kill a big buck now, or hey I need to
- 42:42Speaker 1: do X, Y and Z, And you really have time
- 42:45Speaker 1: to start nitpicking, Well, should the zipper go this direction?
- 42:48Speaker 1: Should this pocket actually be here? You know? What am
- 42:51Speaker 1: I missing in this piece? What do I wish was
- 42:53Speaker 1: a little bit different about that? In those perspectives, you know,
- 42:57Speaker 1: in our eyes and especially in product development, those are
- 43:01Speaker 1: the perspectives that enact major changes and revolutionary changes. And
- 43:05Speaker 1: you know, pieces that either already exist, you know, changes
- 43:09Speaker 1: to them, or new pieces that we need to come
- 43:11Speaker 1: out with. So those perspectives of those, you know, the
- 43:14Speaker 1: guys like yourself for anybody else that gets those high
- 43:18Speaker 1: number of days in a tree are extremely valuable in
- 43:20Speaker 1: product development. UM further, do you want to tell us
- 43:23Speaker 1: what your favorite feature was on the Sanctuary bibs. Yeah,
- 43:28Speaker 1: there's a there's one feature that I could see myself
- 43:31Speaker 1: using quite often actually, uh and there's so many stories
- 43:35Speaker 1: about further related to this kind of feature. Yeah, I'm
- 43:38Speaker 1: the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary bibs. Yeah, they have like a
- 43:44Speaker 1: emergency valve on the back side of them. You can
- 43:47Speaker 1: zip open the your rear end and have easy access to,
- 43:51Speaker 1: uh um, your undergarments if you need, if you need
- 43:54Speaker 1: to use them. All jokes aside, like that is a
- 43:57Speaker 1: really smart feature, isn't. It's just it's just it's awesome
- 44:01Speaker 1: human nature folks. Uh In anyone who listened to the
- 44:04Speaker 1: podcast a couple of weeks ago when I talked about
- 44:06Speaker 1: the poop blind story, you know that if I happen
- 44:09Speaker 1: to be wearing that set of bibs, it would have
- 44:10Speaker 1: been a different scenario a little bit. It would have
- 44:12Speaker 1: been a lot easier. Uh So I was really impressed
- 44:17Speaker 1: with that. Just like, speaking of which, are you going
- 44:19Speaker 1: to have that feature on the mid season piece at
- 44:22Speaker 1: any day or is there a reason why you didn't
- 44:24Speaker 1: put it in the mid season prototype that I was using. Yeah? So, um,
- 44:29Speaker 1: that feature definitely serves one Nature calls um. As you know,
- 44:33Speaker 1: the Sanctuary bib is a very it's a very cold
- 44:37Speaker 1: weather piece. UM. So ironically, another reason for that feature
- 44:43Speaker 1: is it's actually one of the best ways to dump heat.
- 44:46Speaker 1: So as opposed to side zips, if you can open
- 44:49Speaker 1: up the back of your pants with that zipper and
- 44:54Speaker 1: leave that top section open, it's a great way to
- 44:56Speaker 1: dump pete. So another reason that that's present in the
- 44:58Speaker 1: Sanctuary bibs is because they are so heavy you can
- 45:01Speaker 1: still wear them your walk to the stand of a
- 45:03Speaker 1: bunch of heat. UM. With the mid season kit, being
- 45:06Speaker 1: that it is designed for a more mild climate or
- 45:10Speaker 1: mild temperature hunt, we didn't include that feature. Um. It
- 45:15Speaker 1: can be a bit it's it's some extra parts and pieces, right,
- 45:20Speaker 1: and it's great when you need it. With the mid
- 45:22Speaker 1: season kit, because it's designed to be used when it
- 45:24Speaker 1: is warmer out, we knew that we weren't going to
- 45:27Speaker 1: need to be able to dump as much heat out
- 45:28Speaker 1: of those so we didn't include that feature with those pieces.
- 45:31Speaker 1: One thing I did really like about that mid season
- 45:33Speaker 1: kit was just it It did not feel bulky in
- 45:36Speaker 1: any way, shape or form. It was really nice and
- 45:40Speaker 1: you know, I always bring this up when I'm giving feedback.
- 45:42Speaker 1: I don't like bulky stuff. And what I liked about
- 45:45Speaker 1: that those mid season pieces it was very lightweight, UM.
- 45:48Speaker 1: So I like the fact that you want a relatively
- 45:51Speaker 1: minimalist UM style when it came to a lot of
- 45:54Speaker 1: things there to keep it. You know, UM, I'm missing
- 45:57Speaker 1: the right word in my head, but not bulky. Trim.
- 46:02Speaker 1: It's a trim athletic piece, that's I'm looking for. Triman
- 46:05Speaker 1: Athletic is how typically Mark's middle name. Thank you squash. Yeah,
- 46:12Speaker 1: I think we can talk maybe a little bit about
- 46:14Speaker 1: that now. Most of the listeners that have used our
- 46:17Speaker 1: first light white tail line before would be familiar with
- 46:19Speaker 1: the Woodberry Jacket UM as well as potentially the Sanctuary kit,
- 46:24Speaker 1: and one of our big focuses UM this year was
- 46:28Speaker 1: the redesign of what we would consider a mid season kit.
- 46:31Speaker 1: And this is supposed to be your piece that you know,
- 46:34Speaker 1: it's your mid to late October through the November, so
- 46:38Speaker 1: basically through Thanksgiving. And you know I was wearing it
- 46:41Speaker 1: this week. You know, we were in the high twenties,
- 46:44Speaker 1: low thirties, UM, and it's supposed to hit that sweet
- 46:47Speaker 1: spot of when the majority of guys and gals are
- 46:51Speaker 1: really focused on the white tails. And one thing that
- 46:53Speaker 1: we did notice, the Woodberry is a great piece. I mean,
- 46:56Speaker 1: we all use it a ton. I love that that jacket,
- 47:00Speaker 1: but it was a little bit too heavy for that
- 47:02Speaker 1: sweet spot in terms of time on the calendar when
- 47:06Speaker 1: you're gonna be you know, hunting the rut, pre rut,
- 47:08Speaker 1: post rout, et cetera. So we went back to the
- 47:11Speaker 1: drawing board with this piece, and um, we have a
- 47:14Speaker 1: top and a bottom bib style bottom, and then a
- 47:17Speaker 1: jack to go along with it, and the focus exactly
- 47:20Speaker 1: we're talking about markets. We wanted to be a trim
- 47:23Speaker 1: piece that didn't feel bulky, that could take you through
- 47:26Speaker 1: that entire season. Um, keep you warm, keep you dry,
- 47:30Speaker 1: block the wind, super quiet um, and it's easy to
- 47:34Speaker 1: move around. And that was really our goal that you know,
- 47:37Speaker 1: both the top and the bottom, that whole kit. Yeah,
- 47:40Speaker 1: and then and and I had one version of the prototype,
- 47:42Speaker 1: and I liked it quite a lot. Um, but I
- 47:45Speaker 1: did have a few pieces of feedback and already you've
- 47:48Speaker 1: got a modified version of that that seems to have
- 47:51Speaker 1: taken a lot of those things that you'd read my
- 47:54Speaker 1: mind before I even shared a bunch of stuff with
- 47:55Speaker 1: you guys. Um that seems like an even improved version
- 47:59Speaker 1: of it, which I'm excited to try soon. Yeah. Absolutely
- 48:02Speaker 1: so a big part of our design processes, we don't
- 48:06Speaker 1: want our customers to be the guinea pigs. And we've
- 48:09Speaker 1: got great guys like you and a bunch of other
- 48:11Speaker 1: pro staff and field testers that kind of get a
- 48:13Speaker 1: chance to use this stuff, you know, late in the development,
- 48:17Speaker 1: but yet still with time to make modifications. So when
- 48:21Speaker 1: we bring this product to market, it's been used for
- 48:24Speaker 1: entire seasons. We've gathered a bunch of feedback on it, um,
- 48:27Speaker 1: and we did exactly that with this piece. Um. The
- 48:31Speaker 1: piece has got a bunch of cool features specific to
- 48:34Speaker 1: the white tail guy or gal um, whether it's pocketing,
- 48:39Speaker 1: whether it's passed through for kangaroo pockets, so you can
- 48:42Speaker 1: keep thin gloves on to operate your release and even
- 48:45Speaker 1: with your bow hand you know, bulk there and things
- 48:48Speaker 1: of that nature. But let's I want to make sure
- 48:51Speaker 1: to mention that specific because that is nice. You've got
- 48:53Speaker 1: so on the bib right, you've got you've got a
- 48:55Speaker 1: regular center zip jacket correct, um, so that you know
- 48:59Speaker 1: you've a regular pockets in the jacket, but then on
- 49:02Speaker 1: the inside, right, you're wearing your bibs on the kind
- 49:05Speaker 1: of just below your chest, there's a kangaro pocket on
- 49:07Speaker 1: the bibbs. So what was smart about you guys. What
- 49:11Speaker 1: you guys did here is that you've got venting zippers
- 49:13Speaker 1: on either side of the jacket, so you can open
- 49:15Speaker 1: that up if you want to vent. But then it
- 49:16Speaker 1: also allows you to create a hand opening to pass
- 49:20Speaker 1: your hands into the jacket inside and then place them
- 49:24Speaker 1: inside of the kangaroo pocket on the bibbs. Right. And
- 49:27Speaker 1: that's a pretty a pretty nice way to get that
- 49:30Speaker 1: kangaroo hand orb type feature while still maintaining a regular
- 49:33Speaker 1: jacket style. Um. That was pretty slick. Yeah, And you
- 49:38Speaker 1: know that was a design feature that we struggled with
- 49:41Speaker 1: for a while. You know, there's a bunch of different
- 49:43Speaker 1: ways to integrate essentially a muff into the jacket, you know,
- 49:47Speaker 1: whether it be with a different style of zipper, different
- 49:49Speaker 1: configuration of zipper, etcetera. Um, some of those can be
- 49:52Speaker 1: a little bit tough to operate at certain points. UM,
- 49:56Speaker 1: but you know, we knew that especially for white tail
- 50:01Speaker 1: bow hunters. UM, we value the ability to not wear
- 50:06Speaker 1: bulky gloves at any point. And really, you know, what
- 50:09Speaker 1: I've found in that space is that the only way
- 50:13Speaker 1: to really keep your hands warm if you're not wearing
- 50:14Speaker 1: bulky gloves is they have to be close your body
- 50:16Speaker 1: and they have to be together. Um, you know. And
- 50:19Speaker 1: another thing specific to you know, I think the way
- 50:22Speaker 1: most of us hunt is even if you only have
- 50:25Speaker 1: a four hunder, your walk in your stand, a lot
- 50:27Speaker 1: of times you're not wearing your jacket in because you
- 50:28Speaker 1: gotta walk in, you gotta climb your stand, et cetera,
- 50:32Speaker 1: especially during the early season. So what we really want
- 50:34Speaker 1: to do was we wanted to integrate that kangaroo, you know,
- 50:38Speaker 1: that pouch pocket into the bid. So you know, say
- 50:42Speaker 1: it's October and it's on the warmer end. You know,
- 50:45Speaker 1: maybe that jacket never comes on, but yet you still
- 50:48Speaker 1: have that pouch feature built into the bid because you
- 50:51Speaker 1: may be wearing lighter layers on top of the bid
- 50:53Speaker 1: over it or you know, solo um and then to
- 50:56Speaker 1: the same realm when it does get you know, into
- 50:58Speaker 1: early November, mid late November, and you're going to integrate
- 51:02Speaker 1: the jacket, we still want to be able to utilize
- 51:04Speaker 1: that same pouch without adding bulk or ama for a
- 51:08Speaker 1: funky zipper um, which is why we designed the past
- 51:11Speaker 1: through pockets. Yeah, let's look real quick. I want to
- 51:15Speaker 1: put a time out on this conversation because this is
- 51:17Speaker 1: future Mark talking to you now, and I want to
- 51:20Speaker 1: give your heads up on something kind of cool that
- 51:21Speaker 1: we decided to put out there. Given the fact that
- 51:24Speaker 1: with the First Light guys in to hunt with me,
- 51:26Speaker 1: we wanted to to run a little special opportunity for
- 51:29Speaker 1: everyone listening because I've been getting so many questions and emails,
- 51:32Speaker 1: as I mentioned already about what kind of First Light
- 51:35Speaker 1: stuff am I wearing? And we actually have first Like
- 51:37Speaker 1: gear for sale over on the Meat Eater website, and
- 51:41Speaker 1: we're going to run a special promotion for you guys,
- 51:43Speaker 1: giving you twenty off any of the First Light that
- 51:46Speaker 1: we've got on sale, plus free shipping on orders over
- 51:48Speaker 1: fifty dollars. So you can get this stuff by going
- 51:51Speaker 1: to the meat eater dot com and then clicking over
- 51:55Speaker 1: into the shop. And when you click into the shop,
- 51:56Speaker 1: you're gonna see all this stuff. Stuff like the Sanctuary
- 51:59Speaker 1: Bibbs is where Jack and I was just talking about.
- 52:01Speaker 1: That stuff is twenty off and I've just been hearing
- 52:06Speaker 1: from so many people that are interested in trying the
- 52:08Speaker 1: stuff out. If you if you've been interested, this is
- 52:10Speaker 1: a great time to do it. Fifty orders or more
- 52:15Speaker 1: or free shipping by using promo code wired as W
- 52:19Speaker 1: I R e D. Find that over at the meat
- 52:22Speaker 1: eater dot com clicking to the shop you'll see it
- 52:25Speaker 1: all right there. Now back to the conversation. So for
- 52:29Speaker 1: someone listening who there are decked out and whatever stuff
- 52:33Speaker 1: they like to wear, they don't care about first light,
- 52:35Speaker 1: They're not gonna buy some new stuff, or they they've
- 52:37Speaker 1: got their own favorite brand or anything like that. I
- 52:39Speaker 1: think what's interesting for that guy or girl. Still, what
- 52:41Speaker 1: I've always found interesting, regardless of my brand affinities or
- 52:44Speaker 1: whatever I'm wearing and stuff is it's always kind of
- 52:47Speaker 1: intriguing just to hear, like what the process that goes
- 52:50Speaker 1: into making high end equipment like this, Like can you
- 52:54Speaker 1: walk us through? Because I gotta from from what little
- 52:57Speaker 1: inset I do have, it seems like it is a process.
- 53:00Speaker 1: It's not something you guys just like throw something at
- 53:01Speaker 1: the wall and all of sudden it happens. Talking to
- 53:04Speaker 1: a number of different companies in different spaces, it's it's
- 53:07Speaker 1: always been interesting to me to hear about that that
- 53:09Speaker 1: behind the scenes. Where how does this go from like
- 53:12Speaker 1: an idea or two, hey, we need to start doing
- 53:15Speaker 1: X for the white Tail guys and girls or whatever.
- 53:17Speaker 1: What does that look like to the point where something
- 53:19Speaker 1: actually finally does get launched to the world. That's a
- 53:21Speaker 1: great question, and honestly, it's a question that I could
- 53:24Speaker 1: not have answered before I had been involved in it,
- 53:27Speaker 1: you know, because from an outside perspective, and I always
- 53:30Speaker 1: had it too, I was guilty. It's like, oh cool,
- 53:32Speaker 1: you come up with something, you build it, you build it,
- 53:34Speaker 1: and then you bring to market, right, and it seems easy.
- 53:37Speaker 1: It seems easy, um to that point though, I mean
- 53:40Speaker 1: I joke with my friends at this point, I constantly
- 53:44Speaker 1: I'm writing the wrong date, like when I read out
- 53:47Speaker 1: checked when I date things, because in my world, we're
- 53:50Speaker 1: working two years out so right now, you know, we're
- 53:53Speaker 1: working on products they're gonna be coming out two years
- 53:55Speaker 1: from now and stuff we're I mean, we're already into
- 53:59Speaker 1: prototype being two thousand twenty stuff. So and that's how
- 54:03Speaker 1: long it takes us to get through you know. This
- 54:06Speaker 1: basically from idea concept like putting a list of bullet
- 54:10Speaker 1: points on paper. This is what is what we want
- 54:13Speaker 1: to design. This is what it needs to do to
- 54:15Speaker 1: essentially getting to a you know, a vector diagram and
- 54:18Speaker 1: architectural draft of that building. The first rounds of trial pieces,
- 54:23Speaker 1: you know, getting those in house and testing them, going
- 54:26Speaker 1: to second, third, fourth, fifth rounds before we even are
- 54:30Speaker 1: feel confident in putting it in the hands of our
- 54:32Speaker 1: pro staffers are testers. You know, they get a full
- 54:35Speaker 1: year in the pieces and then we got a little
- 54:37Speaker 1: bit of time to make changes, and you know, two
- 54:39Speaker 1: years later that's when we can finally bring it to market.
- 54:41Speaker 1: So it's definitely a lengthy process, and we could make
- 54:45Speaker 1: it go quicker, you know, we could get things to
- 54:47Speaker 1: market much quicker than that. But a big part of
- 54:51Speaker 1: where we come from as a company, and I mentioned
- 54:54Speaker 1: this before, I don't mean it sounds like a broken record,
- 54:55Speaker 1: but we don't want our customers to be the guinea pigs.
- 54:58Speaker 1: You know, this stuff needs to be tested, perfected, perfect
- 55:03Speaker 1: before it gets in the hands of any of our consumers.
- 55:05Speaker 1: So long story short, you know, we're essentially working on
- 55:09Speaker 1: a two year cycle. Um a full year of that
- 55:11Speaker 1: is testing in a full year that is designed and prototyping.
- 55:14Speaker 1: M that's gotta be I don't know for someone who
- 55:19Speaker 1: myself I speak about here. It's so driven by instant
- 55:23Speaker 1: gratification and some different things. That's gotta be a little
- 55:25Speaker 1: bit difficult um to be working on things that you're
- 55:27Speaker 1: not going to see the the fruits of your labor
- 55:30Speaker 1: come to fruition until two. It's it's an interesting perspective,
- 55:35Speaker 1: you know, because you're involved and you know what's coming
- 55:38Speaker 1: and it's not there yet. It's not you know, ready
- 55:42Speaker 1: to come to market yet, but you know what's coming
- 55:44Speaker 1: down the pipe. And after you finally bring that line
- 55:47Speaker 1: to market, you know, for that first year, you want
- 55:50Speaker 1: to be excited about it and you want to you know,
- 55:53Speaker 1: shake your own hand, impair yourself on the back. But
- 55:55Speaker 1: guess what, that next year cycle has already started or
- 55:58Speaker 1: cranking on those pieces. So it's a fun, fast based environment.
- 56:01Speaker 1: And you know, for for guys like us that you
- 56:05Speaker 1: have an awesome opportunity to work for a company that
- 56:07Speaker 1: really drives innovation. It's it's great because it's ever changing
- 56:10Speaker 1: and the work has never done and it's very gratifying
- 56:13Speaker 1: when those pieces do get to market, and you know,
- 56:16Speaker 1: our customers and guys like you are are stoked on them.
- 56:19Speaker 1: You know that's our ultimate goal. But yeah, yeah, it's
- 56:22Speaker 1: gonna be cool feeling. Um So. So I don't wanna
- 56:26Speaker 1: um go overboard talking about products and stuff all day,
- 56:31Speaker 1: but I do get I get inudated with people asking
- 56:35Speaker 1: me questions. Ever since you know, I started UM testing
- 56:38Speaker 1: out a lot of first like year this year, have
- 56:39Speaker 1: been getting so many questions, what piece should I be
- 56:42Speaker 1: wearing for this scenario? Or what jacket is that? Or
- 56:44Speaker 1: what basically are you wearing? Or what this? What that?
- 56:46Speaker 1: With this? Do you want to share it like us?
- 56:48Speaker 1: I mean a quick cliff notes one oh one on
- 56:52Speaker 1: the first light white tail you know, pieces or a
- 56:55Speaker 1: couple of things that you think are worth mentioning or
- 56:57Speaker 1: anything like that. Just to touch on a handful of
- 57:00Speaker 1: you mentioned this mid season prototype that I've been using
- 57:03Speaker 1: that you use here that's gonna be coming out sometimes soon,
- 57:06Speaker 1: right listen that in January? Okay? Is there is there
- 57:09Speaker 1: any other quick rundown you want to share that the
- 57:11Speaker 1: folks you know about UM or as a white tailed
- 57:14Speaker 1: guy or girl, I should you know, look at as
- 57:16Speaker 1: one of my first options or anything like that, yeah,
- 57:19Speaker 1: I could definitely do that maybe just and I'm sorry,
- 57:23Speaker 1: I will tease that. I actually we just put together
- 57:25Speaker 1: a video that's gonna come out, so rather than me
- 57:28Speaker 1: going through this whole thing right now, we did just
- 57:30Speaker 1: film a video where I walked through my whole system
- 57:33Speaker 1: for this season. So I tested out all sorts of
- 57:36Speaker 1: different gear this year, and I kind of I think
- 57:37Speaker 1: I've got to kind of nailed down to what my
- 57:39Speaker 1: favorite set was for the early season, my favorite stuff
- 57:42Speaker 1: for like the middle of the season during the rut,
- 57:44Speaker 1: and now what I'm wearing now during the late season.
- 57:46Speaker 1: So I share that in a video that hopefully we'll
- 57:49Speaker 1: be live for people to watch the day after this
- 57:51Speaker 1: podcast comes out. Um, so I'll tease that, go to
- 57:54Speaker 1: the wire Tunk YouTube channel now for soon for that.
- 57:57Speaker 1: But Greg, no, that would be that would be perfect.
- 58:00Speaker 1: We get, Um, we get that same question a lot. Um.
- 58:03Speaker 1: I think maybe the best kind of route for this
- 58:06Speaker 1: is I'll give a real mile high overview here and
- 58:09Speaker 1: then if Ford or Jordan wants to fill in any
- 58:12Speaker 1: gaps or you know, markred further as well, Um, you
- 58:15Speaker 1: can do that in addition to that. And you know,
- 58:17Speaker 1: I definitely want to say, we got a good chunk
- 58:20Speaker 1: of our customer service team at this point, our Midwest
- 58:24Speaker 1: born and bread. So these boys have spent some time
- 58:26Speaker 1: in tree stands. And if you ever any questions with
- 58:29Speaker 1: regard to your white tail kit, UM, there's plenty of
- 58:32Speaker 1: people that if you give the officer the rank, can
- 58:34Speaker 1: help you out. But yeah, just about half of them
- 58:36Speaker 1: at this point. Yeah, I think we're yeah, almost fifty. Yeah,
- 58:40Speaker 1: we're actually just remarking that so many of the applications
- 58:44Speaker 1: we get for internships, for jobs what have you are
- 58:47Speaker 1: actually from sort of the certainly Midwest and maybe even
- 58:51Speaker 1: like northern northern Midwest, probably wrong where Great Lakes region,
- 58:55Speaker 1: I guess, interestingly enough, And at this point, what do
- 58:59Speaker 1: we have four people maybe from the Midwest overall at
- 59:03Speaker 1: least a lot of a lot of white tail knowledge
- 59:06Speaker 1: in the office. But I think you know, long story short.
- 59:10Speaker 1: You know, First Light was founded on Marino wool. You know,
- 59:13Speaker 1: that's where our company was started, UM, and it started
- 59:16Speaker 1: at bass layers, and obviously it's expanded to a full
- 59:19Speaker 1: line of bass layers, mid layers outer where, but UM,
- 59:23Speaker 1: especially for and I think sometimes this gets overlooked for
- 59:26Speaker 1: the white tail guy or gal. You really can't go
- 59:30Speaker 1: wrong with Marino wool because it does everything that a
- 59:34Speaker 1: serious white tail hunter needs. It's quiet, um, it's owder resistant,
- 59:39Speaker 1: it's gonna keep you fairly cool. It breathes super well.
- 59:44Speaker 1: It's gonna keep you cool on that hike in. And
- 59:46Speaker 1: then even if you do get you know, potentially a
- 59:48Speaker 1: little bit sweated up on the hike in, um, it's
- 59:50Speaker 1: gonna keep you warm and dry fairly quickly once you
- 59:54Speaker 1: actually get into the stand. So, you know, for the
- 59:56Speaker 1: early season or if you're you know, tail grounds I
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: would say, you know, are in the southern hemisphere or
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: excuse me, in the southern US. Um, you know, you
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: you can't go wrong with those Marino pieces. So we
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: make a Marino pants called the Obsidian Um that's a
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: great bottom layer for really any of your white tail
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: endeavors because it regulates body temperature super well. Like I said,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: it breathes really well, um, super quiet, order resistant, and
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: then depending on what temperature range you're looking at for
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: that early season. You know, we have a variety of
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Marino tops from a hundred and fifty weight all the
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: way up to three fifty weight that we're great for
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: your uppers. UM any combination of layering those pieces. Again,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: depending on your situation, you really can't go wrong with those. UM.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: I'm always a huge proponent of, whether it's really really
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: hot or really really cold, start with a hundred and
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: fifty weight piece on top, because what that's gonna do
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: is it's gonna breathe well, it's gonna drive fast, it's
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: gonna pull that moisture away from your body. It's really
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: going to maintain. You know, what we like to refer
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: to is that microclimate that next to skin, you know,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: keeping your immediate humidity excuse me, in temperature where it
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: needs to be UM. And then again, depending on what
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: your early season looks like for temperatures, you can either
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: choose to run that by itself or with some additional
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: pieces on top. UM tons of variety there. Obviously I
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: can't cover everybody's situation, and you know the thirty second
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: speel here, but that's really kind of my go to
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: and most people that use their stuff there go to.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: For an early season, kid is gonna be some combination
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: of obsidian pants and Marino wold top layers. As we
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: move into the mid season. UM, as we mentioned, are
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: you know the slightly cooler attempts. We have a bunch
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: of mid layer pieces that are great. I love the
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: clam with Hoodie. It's a synthetic grid fleece that blocks
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: the wind really well, pairs and works really well with
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Marino bass layers. UM. And in addition to that, we
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: have our Catalyst kit. It's kind of a revolutionary two
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: layer soft shell that works great. You know, once you
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: get past the point of being able to just run
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: like an obsidian pant with a wool top. It's a
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: two air soft shell, Ultra quiet, ultra breathable, ultra durable. UM.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: You know. The next step past that was the the
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: mid season kit that you had talked about, Mark, that
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: you'd got a chance to use this year, which will
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: be releasing in January this year. That's gonna be kind
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: of your bread and butter if you're anywhere in the
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Midwest from early November or excuse me, mid October till
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: late November. UM, a bunch of great white tail specific features. Again,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: really quiet. It's meant to keep you warm. As those
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: tempts dropped, It's gonna do a great job of you know,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: shedding moisture preset that you get and blocked the wind,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: and then you know, past that, you move into the
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: late season and it's our sanctuary kit. It's kind of
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: the ultimate cold weather Burly do it all. So obviously,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I know I'm I'm not hitting the details and everybody's
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: specific situations, but I would say those are kind of
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: our bread and butter combinations across the board from September
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: fifteen to you know, middle of January, depending on how
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: your season lays out. Yeah, it's been. Um. You know,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: every every time you you're testing new things, you never
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: know what to expect, and you're always a little hesitant.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: Especially you know you get comfortable or even wearing happy
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: what you're doing. Anytime you make a change, it is
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: you know a little bit of cause for concern. There's
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: like those little whispers in the back of your mind, like, oh,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: what if you don't like it, What if it doesn't
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: do so good on November seven and the big bucks
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: coming in and you get cold or whatever? You have
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: all these whispers and worries. Um, Unfortunately, all those whispers
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: and worries were for not for me. Everything that I've been,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: all the use so far i've had, I haven't had
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: a single negative experience yet. Um. But I think the
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: coolest thing for one, not maybe the only cool thing,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: but but something that I have liked so much about
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: what you guys have been doing is the focus that
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: the First Light puts on on giving back on conservation,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: on public land, UM, on making sure that we focus
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: U saw, on some of these bigger picture things that
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: make what we'd love to do possible to the wildlife,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: the wild places all that. UM. We had Kel on
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: the show with with me a couple months ago. We we
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: we didn't we didn't l hunt together, talked a little
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: bit about what he what he was, you know, doing
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: back at that point. Um, but is there anything on
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: that front that you guys want to want to share
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: a little about when it comes to First Lights, Um,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: I don't know. It seems like an important part of
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: what you guys stand for. Yeah, it's it's core. It's
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: core for our company. And it's pretty simple really think
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Kenton always obviously Kenton one of the co founders of
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: First Light, Kent and grew. He often gets you know, interviewed, uh,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: talks about what have you on podcasts and what have you? Um,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: you know, it's a simple equation for us, our customers
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: recreate in wild places, uh, and our our chasing wild critters,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: and if those places and those critters aren't around, we
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: don't have a business. No, it's not, it's not really
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: an altruistic thing. Even in that regard. It's it's essential
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: to what we do. And what's more, obviously access to
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: in the protection of public lands in the east and
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: the west um are our our corridor us also in
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: soo much as a lot of our customers rely on
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: those places for their hunts, well, for their hunts and
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: and for everything else really be that camping, fishing, skiing, running,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: you know, the whole gamut of activities, grocery acquisition, grocery acquisition. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: that's that's pretty key. Like you said, there's there's a
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: certain practicality um that for all of us. You know,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: you don't need to be just a do gooder. It
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: just makes practical sense to try to fight for these things.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: And of course we I think all of us that
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: love this stuff so much, we also love it in
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: such a way that we want to give back and
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: we want to make sure the future generations have it
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: as good, if not better in the future. UM. So
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: we don't need to when you explain that at all.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: But you mentioned something I don't know why. My head
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: totally jumped to a new place. So if you guys
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: want to go back and say anything else, but somehow
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: my mind just jumped to this question because somehow you
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: you were talking about Kenton, and you were talking about
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: first light, and I'm thinking about first light being in Idaho,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: and I thought about the fact that you were mentioning
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: how you finally got the mule deer bug this year,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: and this is everything that was run anything I had
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: the last thirty seconds while you were talking, I heard
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: nothing that you said, because this is what happens in
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: the mind of Mark Kenyon. And then I thought to myself,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: Ford City caught the mule deer bug. Now he finally
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: gets it, and mule des are kind of man, I
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: really like white tailed deer. He doesn't know what he's
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: talking about. White tails are greater than mule deer. Game over,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: That's what was going on my head. So the question
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: I need to ask each of you guys now, especially further.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: You can't answer this since you haven't hunting mule there
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I haven't hunting meal there um. But I know you
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: two have and have you Jordan's just with the camera.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: You've you've hunted them with a camera. Okay, see quite
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: a bit with a camera, so you can go in there.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: But for the two of you, you both grew up
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Midwest or east. You run forward from Maryland right from Wisconsin.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: You both came from a white tail background, then you
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: lived out in Idaho for a period of time on Mull's,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Muli's or white Tails. Who wins in your hearts and minds?
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Do you want to go first for? That's an easy
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: question for me. We we actually uh so, we had
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: a fairly substantial white Tailed trip this year. Um it
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: was both a marketing endeavor and um I guess fun
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: endeavor as well, but not a lot of gear testing,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: a lot of testing that mid season kit in Yeah
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: entries for sure. And throughout the process of planning this
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: they were some heated discussions within the group about when
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: this trip should start, and the heated discussions largely revolved
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: around there's a certain camp of people that we're not
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: willing to miss the end of meal dear season, and
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: then there is another camp of people myself, h and
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: a fellow coworker who is also from Wisconsin Paul Peterson
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: that basically said, we would be very willing to throw
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: our meal dear tags in the garbage to not miss
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: the end of pre rut beginning of white tail ruts.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: So for me, it's it's it's definitely white tails. I
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: mean that's what I kind of cut my teeth on
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: and is my bread and butter. And yeah, the white
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: tails hold a special place in my heart. How do
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: you can you articulate why that is it? All? I
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: had this conversation with Steve the other day and he,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: you know, I took him out bow hunting in Michigan
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: for white tails, and after that hunt, he was still like,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: he's like, you know, I get it, but it just
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: doesn't do it for me, like mule deer, which is interesting,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: I should point out, because he is a Michigander, right,
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: and we grew up hunting white tails just for the uninitiated.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, but now he's all high falutin older guy. Um,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: so why you've had now a lot of experience with both,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: why why do the white tails still just make it?
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: You know? I think for me, and don't get me wrong,
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I have grown too, and similar to Ford, feel like
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I have finally kind of got bit by the meal
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: of your bug. It's a animal I respect and definitely
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: enjoy pursuing. Um. But for me, the difference lies in
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: the country that we hunt them in and the chess
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: match that goes on hunting mature white tail bucks. Um.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: They're typically not animals that you first you know, you don't.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: It's not like a meal that refined it in the
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: glass and then you make a plan to get to it.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: You know. From these mature white tail bucks, it's you
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: find them maybe in the glass us in the summer,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: you know, in in fields and X, Y and Z
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: and hopefully on trail camera. Um. But you're essentially, you know,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: you're trying to outsmart an animal in its own bedroom
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: and taking in so many considerations, whether it be whether win, direction,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: time of year, um, you know, you name it, and
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: trying to put together a plan to put yourself in
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: a spot to intercept that deer on his normal patterns,
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: his normal day to day and do so in a
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: way that he won't know you're there. And for some
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: reason that that chess match, that whole process, you know,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: and for us it starts, you know, essentially after one
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: season is over knowing what deer are still around, and
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: then trying to find their sheds in the spring and
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: putting out trail cameras and potentially you know, planning food
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: plots and the spring and summer and then running those
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: trail cameras to that period of time. And it's the
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: all encompassing process of trying to outsmart a very smart
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: animal in a very small area A lot of times
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: that for some reason I just can't get past. It's
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: it's been insanely addicting for me. You know, something is
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: you're talking about that, and I realized I'm preaching to
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: the choir here, But you know, the choir always gets
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: preached us as part of the part of the game. Um,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: when it comes to white tail hunting, you need to
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: know these good Well, let me take it back. When
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: you're mute, and I've never went mule the hunting, so
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: you can tell me. I don't know, but when I
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: watch mule deer owners on TV UM. But right you're
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: you're spotting an animal. You're seeing that animal in many cases,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: and you know where he is, and then you try
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: to figure out a way to get to where that animals.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: And I know that's tremendously challenge in a lot of
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: different ways. But when you're hunting a mature white tail,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: you need to know that animals so well that you
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: know where he's going to be before he ever gets exactly.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: You need to predict what he's gonna do weeks or
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: months in advance, and then make sure you are there
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: in that perfect scenario that he goes where you believe
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: he's going to go and doesn't know that you're sitting
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: there waiting for him. And that is such a mental
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: game to put all those pieces together. I say a
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: thousand times that chest match, and everybody listening knows that already,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: and that's why they listened to this podcast. So we're
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: all just kind of patting ourselves on the heads and say,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: good job. But well, and it's it's that, and I
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: think it's specially bow hunting white tails. It's that plus
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: some because you know, you may do all those things
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: and you may be within a hundred or a hundred
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: fifty yards of the deer, and to me, that's an accomplishment,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Like you've put together fourteen of those fifteen stats. But
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: to have a successful bow hunt on an animal like that,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: you have to put number fifteen on there, and that's
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: to be within you know, depending on what your range ist,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: et cetera. Yards, And you know that it's it's hard
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: to do. It's really hard to do. And I think
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: that challenge for me is always I don't know, it's
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: it's trumped anything else, any of my other hunting endeavors,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: whether it be elk, mule deer, antelope, et cetera. And
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: I know it's there's some nostalgia and in it for
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: me because it's what I grew up doing. But that's
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: always been kind of the thing that's fired me up
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: the most. You know. It's interesting though, and I am
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: this is really the first year I've hunted mule deer
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: seriously in any capacity, and probably many people wouldn't even
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: call what I'm doing serious honestly, because that the level
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: of nuttery around big mule dear box is the same
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: as big white tail box. I've discovered, I would say,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: is how similar they are actually? You know, I think
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: we tend to think of mule deer in the spot
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: and stock dynamic. You know, yeah, they're over there, let's
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: how do we get to them? But the craftiness of
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: an old mule deer, I think is not it should
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: not be underestimated. Um and I think they share a
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: lot of you know, for example, you see a big
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: buck in July in out West hunting mule deer. You
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: know he's in the drainage. Okay, great, you maybe see
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: him again in August kind of scouting trip. You might
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: not see him again in that drainage potentially. Ever, you
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: know he's probably there, he's quite likely there, but he's
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: in the timber all day. Every day. He might come
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: out for three minutes, five minutes, fifteen minutes at first light,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: and if you don't happen to be looking at that
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: edge of that timber patch, you never see him. And
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: I think there really is a lot more carryover than
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: I estimated in terms of in terms of that just craftiness,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: that sneakiness and uh sort of to your point, getting
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: to know uh bucks and and trying to figure out
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: where they're gonna be when they're going to be out
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: of the timber for five minutes, you've got to be
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: in the right place, and that might not even be
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: you know, so what you've seen a mile away, that
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: doesn't help you at all. It's cool to see him
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: again but you have to be close enough and in
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: the right place that when they come out for five minutes,
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: you're there to get them. In the same way, I
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: think that you have to know, you know when a
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: when a box is going to follow a doh through
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: a given area in November, um or or what have you.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: You know. In the in the white tail side of things,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: they really actually are I think more similarities than we
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: think between the two. There's a lot of differences, don't
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: get me wrong. Um And I think the pressure element
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: is always so much higher or almost always so much
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: higher on white tails that that really changes the game.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: But it's interesting the similarities between the two. Also, if
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: if someone put a gun to your head right now
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: and said, next season, you only get to hunt one species, dear,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: it's gonna be white tails or mule deer, you have
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: to choose right now? What is it? Just me personally?
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: Because for the good of the country white tailed deer?
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Why do you say that? Also? Which is you know,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: without question, it's the most important, It's the most important
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: game species in North America. In terms of the number
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: of hunters that have meaningful experiences with the game, white
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: tailor are more people I don't want to say more important.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: That's loaded, but more people they're they're more important to
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: introducing and you know, I don't want to say maintaining.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: They're more important to the enjoyment and satisfaction. And you know,
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: frankly food source or the are a food source from
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: more hunters than than mildier I think obviously. So that's
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: your cop on answer answer. It's tough for me. The
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: white tailed thing, I think is more nostalgic. I just
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: the institution of deer camps, the memories I have of
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: deer hunting um and sort of the associations are so
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: strong with white tail hunting. I think right now I
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: very much like muled deer hunting more than white tailing
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: currently in my life, very much so gun gun to
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: the head mule deer hunting forward. I appreciate the honesty, Uh, Josh,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: I don't have any nothing Jordan's from your camera hunting.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Does this seem I mean, I definitely I appreciate how
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: you go about meal deer hunting and being from the Midwest,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: how unique it seems not growing up doing it, but
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: being lucky enough to do at a fair amount this fall.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Getting home back to the Midwest back to Minnesota to
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: climb up into a tree stand was one of the
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: most refreshing things I think I could have done. It's
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: just yeah for me, nothing pizza. Yeah. I get this
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: thing where every year around in January or February, I
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: always get in this mode in my mind where I
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: started picking up my Bogle magazine means I'm looking at
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: YouTube and watching some high country meal deer hunt or
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: something like I really want to go do that. So
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: it's then I go plan like an el Cohn or
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna go to this meal deer hunter,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: this whatever big game hunt. And um, that's when I'm
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: always in like different species modes like January February coming
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: off the long white tail season. But every single year,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: every year, without fail, August and September rolls around and
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: I'm like supposed to be going on an alkhon or something.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: And this is horrible to say this, but every year,
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: even this year, I had a great come up, like
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: I just want to be in a tree stand hunting
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: white tails, and I got this elkin coming up, but
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: I really want to be checking trail cameras and planning
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: out this hunt. So I don't know I've got a
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: weird disease. Um, I can't I can't focus on anything.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: But but yeah, let's say not that I wanted to
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: be cured, but I don't think you're on with it.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: So if you figure out to cure, please don't give
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: it to me, because I'm fully enjoying the disease. With
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: that being said, fingers crossed, I might get to go
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: on a mule deer hunt someday. That's definitely a bucket
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: list hunt that I'd like to do, So one of
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: these years, I'm just gonna show up that board Storre stuff. Yeah,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: they're just hunting. They are so cool and the country
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: they live in is so cool and uh you know,
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: physically they're so impressive. Um yeah, I don't know, it's
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: just kind of taking me a late. I also just
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: like sitting and looking glassing, which is is a is
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: a big part of mule deer hunting obviously, Um, taking
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: it in and seeing what you see. I don't know,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: it's it's definitely taken hold. But I love sitting in
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: tree stand Also, don't get me wrong, I think you
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: know the sites you see that are almost always so
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: close to you when you're in a tree stand. You know,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: it's cool to see stuff a mile away through glass,
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: but having a fox run right underde in a tree stand,
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: it's it's always going to be that intimate, you know,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: in terms of or or has you learned this year
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: a fox squirrel or a fox far too? What happened
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: with this fox squirrel? What's the what's the fox squirrel story?
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: We've been I could pretend like it didn't tell you.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Middle of the rut? Yeah, best time of year, the
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: middle of the rut? What day was that for it?
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: Just so listener, I actually don't remember, but I'm sure
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: that it was the greatest day of the rut ever
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: in the world. It was November five, Go ahead, right
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: right to be To be fair, we hadn't seen we
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: hadn't seen any deer, and didn't see anymore dear out
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: of stand, which makes me feel mildly better about myself again.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: It was November five. To reiterate, November five. Things tend
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: to happen on November. Yes, so I'm told um anyhow,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: had had had seen a fox squirrel or two while
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: we were kicking around, had grown up in a place
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: where you actually can't kill fox squirrels on the del
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: Marva Peninsula. It was an endangered species growing up. Um
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: it's actually since been listed. Was interested in perhaps eating
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: a fox squirrel. I hadn't really seen any in the
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: what I don't know, half a dozen days or what
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: are we hunted? And fox squirrels are dear fox squirrel.
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: We've seen a couple of deer um and had one
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: pop out when Jordan and I were hunting at maybe
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: ten yards right under me, I had a judo point arrow.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: Figured I would subtly dispatch this fox squirrel and continue
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: with the all day sit and uh, so I kind
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: of excitedly pulled an arrow out of the quiver. Jordan
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: probably thought I saw a buck and lined up on
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: this fox squirrel, which was probably not ten yards It's
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: probably more like ten ft. Did you understand what was
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: going on? I totally did, because I saw him take
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: the arrow with a nice broad head off and replace it,
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: replace it with an arrow that had a small game
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: head on it, at which point I side, yeah, you
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: hit records what you did? Did? Yeah? So I lined
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: up on this fox squirrel, I let the arrow go.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: Huh in retrospect with a target that's probably two inches
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: or three inches wide, probably should have shot a little lower.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Took quite a bit of fur off the top of
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: the back of the fox squirrel and the air I
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: was stuck in the mud facing up right under the
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: tree stand. Squirrel walked away, didn't even seem to notice
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: that it would had gotten a haircut. And so I said, hey,
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: I kind of got a pee anyway, I'm a little stiff.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: I'm just gonna climb down to the base of the
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: tree and grab the arrow out of the dirt. Uh.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: So I did that, climbed down the ladder, I didn't
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: bring my bow, left my bow hanging notably on the
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: bow hanger on the you know, off to the left,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: and stand there, grabbed the arrow, looked at the fur
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: side a little bit, uh, took a leak, and climbed
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: back into the climb back into the stand, And as
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: I was sitting, I happened to look to my left
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: and in what appeared to be about ten seconds, watch
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: my bow fall slowly to the earth, the ft down, uh,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: into the mud, kind of take a hit in the mud,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: and roll off to the side. So I still don't
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: understand how the boat You're not like when you sat down,
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: just fully bumped into it without kind of noticing, climbing
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: up the ladder um. And I think it must have
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: kind of done sort of a sway sway sway and
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: then fallen off because it I was fully seated by
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: the time it fell off the hangar. It was real
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: life slow motion. Yeah, that thing that I looked over
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: at Jordan. Jordan is now who as we mentioned, very quiet.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: Jordan is now audibly laughing at me, continues to do
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: so for probably thirty to forty seconds climbed down. I'm like, oh,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: just an off chance this thing still works. Not so much.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Peep was out of line. Timing already felt off. But
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: that that ended that all day set ten thirty in
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: the morning on November five, November again, Wait what it was?
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: November five, five days into the month of November. Correct,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: And while you were out slinging the arrows a fox
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: squirrels though Greg here was was chasing white tails successfully,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: I believe too. More or less so, I think it
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: was a couple of days before when you tagged out.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: I was actually sitting in the cabin on November five.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: I shut mine on November two. You want to tell seven? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: so November one, the evening of November one, UM, Paul Peterson,
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: our coworker, we're hunting his property in um southwest Wisconsin,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: tagged out in a great deer another sweet deer camp
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: as a side note, Yeah, Um, so we got to
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: kind of be a part of that and it really
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: kicked off. It was the first tag we punched on
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: our white tail hunt. Um, so that kind of kicked
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: everything off. November two, Jordan and I actually went into
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: a standum that we hadn't hunted yet. It was the
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: first morning day in general, but morning that we had
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: good win for it, and um, we went and got
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: up in that spot and I said to Jordan's when
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: we climbed into the stand that it just felt like
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: one of those mornings, um, or one of those days
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: for I guess lack of a better term, that obviously
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: you're gonna spend all day in the stand and it
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: felt like one of those days that could potentially be
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: good for rattling. And I'll be full disclosure, I've had
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: to two hunts that ended successfully because of hitting horns together. Um.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: Both of them are in the a M and both
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: of them felt very similar to kind of the for
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: whatever reason, whether it's in my mind or not. UM,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: the way they this day had set up. So I
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: kind of told Jorn, I'm like, hey, I'm gonna hit
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: the horns on the hour, every hour, trying to kill
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: him aturebuck fully where I may scare some beer away,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: but we'll see what happened. So hit at eight am, nothing,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: We had a doe come through it about eight thirty. UM,
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: hit him at nine am, nothing happened. UM. And then
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: I was a little late on my my ten am hit,
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: so I think it was like ten eleven, ten twelve
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: or something like that. UM clanked the horns together and
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: it had to be not fifteen seconds after I got
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: done rattling, and it just sounded like there was a
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: freight train coming through the woods. And we were joking
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: about this last night when I was telling the story,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: but I wish I had this on video. I looked
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: up at Jordan's when all the commotions started, and I
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: think his exact words were, that's way too big to
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: be a squirrel. So we kinda got ready, and I
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: mean we heard him coming and UM, basically, long story short,
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: a little spike cruise through right in front of us
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: and um followed by it a very mature great deer. Um.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: And they were moving so fast. I mean basically it
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: wasn't the tip goal like you know the white tailed
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: grant I had to scream at this year. It was
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: the loudest like bellow I think I've ever heard somebody
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: have to make in order to stop a deer. Yeah,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: and he uh, he put on the brakes at twenty
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: yards and the rest is kind of history. I think basically.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: The way the the way it played out is those
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: those two bucks must have been in the vicinity of
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: one another when I hit the horn together and that
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: infuriated the that bigger deer, and um, he started pushing
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: the other one and pushed him right towards us. UM.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: But yeah, it was. It was an unbelievable hunt. It
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: was one of those where everything kind of came together
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: the way you drawed up. I mean, he came in,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: his eyes were bulging out of his head, and he
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: was looking for a fight. Um. Luckily we were able
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: to get him aged after I shot. We saw him
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: tip over after I shot him, got the whole thing
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: during got some great pictures, but um, we got him
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: aged after I shot him, and the biologist said he
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: was either you know, five and a half or six
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: and a half, so definitely a mature deer. And yeah,
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: it's one of those, uh, you know, those stereotypical rut
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: hunts that you won't forget. Everything just kind of plays
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: out the way it's opposed to, which, as we all know,
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: rarely happens. But man, then it goes so fast. I
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: can't believe we're already in December now. You look forward
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: to it all year and then it's just like always
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: here and then next you blink exactly it's gone. Yeah,
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: you got to make the best of that's good. It
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: was fun. It was a fun year. It was one
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: of those hunts too, even even not hunting, that hunt's
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: going to stick with me for a long time, you know,
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: some of some part of the kind of wishes that man,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: I wish I could be, you know, back home or
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: sitting in that hot seat right there too. But even
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: just being able to witness yeah, I mean not everybody
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: gets to see dear act like that, you know, that
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: quickly in that fashion, and that's that was really special
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: to be able to be able to see that and
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: the backslap and you know what happens. After that, Greg
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: called us and we all came out and you know,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: took pictures and congre adulating to each other and even uh,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: I believe what was the beer of choice that was consumed.
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: We congratulated, like congratulatory ten thirty beery whatever. It was
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: an honorary line in googles. Yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, that
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: was that was. That was very neat and just to
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: be in a deer camp and I guess really my
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: first Midwestern deer camp and two bucks hanging in the
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: barn and it was cool. Before we move on to
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: the next set of questions, I've got here. I wanted
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: to a quick break to thank our partners at White
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: Tailed Properties and Spencer has a quick word from one
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: of their land specialists. This week with White Tailed Properties,
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: we had joined by Jeff Probes, a land specialists out
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: of Missouri, and Jeff is going to be talking to
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: us about getting started filming your own hunts. Well. I
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: filmed personally, my son and I did for a long time.
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: I was involved in it for over twenty years. My
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: son and I filmed together for about fifteen years, and
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: uh pretty much retired from it now. But I guess
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: The first thing is is don't skimp, skimp on your equipment.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: If you're wanting to particularly if you're wanting to try
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: to do something on a professional level, get good quality equipment.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: Obviously high definition cameras. The cameras have changed so much
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: since we were in it. I mean they've got these
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: small little handheld cameras now that take just about as
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: good at quality footage as the old big cameras we
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: used to carry. And um, you know, get good quality
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: footage and get a good mic. Don't go with an
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: onboard mic on this on the cameras that come with
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: a by shotgun mic of good quality. Spend the money,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: do it right. Use the tree arm. When you're in
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: a tree you get nice, smooth, steady pans. And when
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: you're on the ground if it's if it's feasibly, use
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: the tripod. Just keep your footage nice and steady, whether
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: you're in a tree or on the ground. But the
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: big thing is that don't skimp on equipment. By good stuff,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: and it'll show with your footage. The quality will show through.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: If you'd like to learn more and to see the
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: properties that Jeff currently has listened for, visit White Tail
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: properties dot com backslash propes. That's p r O PST.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: We also want to thank our partners at on x
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: for the support of this podcast, and I want to
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: give you quick heads up about a new feature on
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: the on x Hunt app which is pretty neat. Now,
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: on top of the digital maps that you can see
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: right we've talked about in the past, you can see
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: your aerial views, you can see your topic graphic views,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: you can mark way points, you can share way points,
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: you can measure distances, you can measure areas. You can
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: see the public land borders, you can see private land
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: owners and borders. On top of all of that, now
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: you can also see weather data overlaid right in that
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: same spot. So now you can see things like what
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: the temperatures, you can see what the percentage chance of precipitation,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: you can see what the wind direction, what the barre
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: metric pressure is doing, even the sunrise and sunset times.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: It's all right there, easily accessible while you're looking at
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: your map. So once again they're just making this tool
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: even more handy and usable, and it is one of
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: those things that you can easily get on your phone.
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: You just gotta go search for on X. That's O
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: n X on the mobile app store of your choice,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: or you can go on over to onyx maps dot
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: com to learn more. So you've had quite the kind
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: of education on the northern Great Lakes deer hunting tradition.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: This year you did the Wisconsin camp. Now you're doing
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: the Northern Michigan camp. Totally. Yeah, because where I grew up. Um,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: I think part of why I think all of this
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: is neat, you know, looking at the wall here with
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: twenty plus buck handlers or sets and hailers. Um, you know,
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: we just we didn't really have quite the deer culture
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: where I grew up in eastern Maryland. I think probably
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: partially because there probably weren't hardly any deer, you know,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: within even the lifespan of some of the old timers
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: that are still kicking around. I think in the way here,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: you know, deer just held on in the northern part
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: of the country obviously through sort of the the bad
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: old days for lack of a better word, and and
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: so we don't I don't think we really at least
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: in eastern Maryland. And I think it probably does exist
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: in the Appalachian part of Maryland. But um, we don't
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: have the quite the dear the history history to deer culture,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: dear camp culture that that you all have up here.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: So it's pretty neat to experience. Yes, so so there's
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: there's one. You did the Wisconsin camp. Ye, you did
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: the Northern Michigan camp. You had a full spread of
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: fried appetizers tonight of the rest of the feast of
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: the fryer, nothing but Friday vegetables. Anyway, it truly was
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: what's that oblong fried ship. That's pick and then that's
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: the fried sparagus, and that's the fried chicken. Yeah, that's
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: the frieder. Yeah, yeah, I thought the papers are gonna
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: be the pickles. Actually no, no. Um. So, so you've
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: done all that. You've heard the Dirty Point Buck. If
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: anyone hasn't heard that yet, you should YouTube or google
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: the Dirty Point Buck and listening not reggae music apparent line.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: I still don't understand how you thought. It's like I
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: got this strange Caribbean beat to it too. I don't
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: really understand where that's coming from. Did you see's a
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: dirty pointer? Um? Okay, So that's you're very nearing the
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: end of your Upper Great Lakes Michigan or the final
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: piece of homework. And we talked about this over dinner.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: But I want to make sure you follow up on this,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: and anyone listening who has not yet done this needs to.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: Let's go over on the YouTube and watch Escanaba in
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: the Moonlight and it is truly spelled U d a
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: Escanaba and the Moonlight for for a lifetime worth of
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: one liners and great quotes. You have to go into
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: this with an open mind and a low bar. Yeah,
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: but but it's your words have never been spoken. But
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: if you do that and you have a cold beer
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: and be with some buddies that want to laugh about
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: some stupid stuff, it's gold. What I think I need
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: to do is get uh, you know, a case of
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: spotted to cow if that's still kicking around Paul's hopefully
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: Paul's apartment. Get get Greg and Paul involved, heat some
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: curds and watch, yeah, some past he's maybe a hot dish,
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: too hot? Some wallee? Yeah, fry up some walleye. And
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: did you bring the past he's Reuben. Oh we got
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: the food covered boys exactly. Just have a little levy
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: on the sap. It sounds like a good experience. Oh
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: it is? It is just just go ahead and watch
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: Esking Up in the Moonlight. We'll be all set. And
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: is that something that you can rent, by the way,
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: on Netflix or where would I find this? You can
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: watch it for free on YouTube. That's available for free
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: right now. And it's got a heck of the cast.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: Jeff Daniels. Jeff Daniels is the star. He's Reuben, He's
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: the buckless Hooper. You're in for a treat. We were
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: talking that we might just have to do this podcast someday.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: Get like a group of guys together watch Escanaba in
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: the Moonlight and just record the podcast and just commentate
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: the whole movie as we go. That might be a
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: future episode. Well that could be like a like a
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: future like Wired to Hunt thing, like people will get
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: like people have YouTube channels with them commentating on things
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: that they watch. So you think that's like my next
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: my next big thing is just commenting on that movie
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: over and over. Would you have to stream the film
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: and then so people could watch the film as you
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: were commentating, you know, like mystery science What was the
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: mystery science here? Yeah, it would have to be like
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: a video podcast, I guess. Would you'd be able to
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: watch the film and then you'd also see me and
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: further in the corner talking about it. Yeah. Um, so
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: so we do this thing. Um, the mediator crew has
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: been doing this deal they're calling like the hot tip
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: offs where everyone's sitting around, Um, each shares like their
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: own best hunting or fishing tip and UM, so I've
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: been doing a bunch of this, So I'm gonna, um,
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna step out of this one. I'm just gonna
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: put this on on you guys. Orto a podcast version
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: of the Hot Tip Off. You guys are all kind
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: of gear guys, right, you're from the clothing gear side
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: and Jordan's You could either do the clothing gear side
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: or you're also like our camera guy. Um. People are
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: always got lots of questions about photography or filming or
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: different things like that. So I kind of thought it
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: would be kind of cool idea to get a quick
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: hot tip from you guys. Um. It could be about
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: choosing the right clothing, could be out layering, it could
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: be different things to stay more comfortable in the field. Um,
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: if something happens to come up you come to mind
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: in that category. Um, but if not, you're welcome to
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: throw any other kind of hot tip at us, Um,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: so that I kind of want you you three to
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: give us a hot tip. In the meantime, Josh, do
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: you have any kind of lukewarm tips? Do you want
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: to share? This is this has been a rough, a
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: rough couple of days from a man. You've just been
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: hammering on me. It's just I don't know, it's just
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: low hanging fruit. Um. Do you do you have a
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: Do you have any kind of thoughts? Um? Concluding thoughts?
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: While these guys think of their hot tips, I've got
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: a couple I want to ask them two questions questions. Yeah,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: do it, but let's do it after they're hot. Yeah,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: that would delay in my hot tips. Okay, No, he
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: wants to do after your hot tips? Yeah, because you
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: guys might have answers. I don't want to distract My
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: lukewarm tip would be try to find someone else to
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: have to stoke the fire in the middle of the night.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I've woken up the first one I had to do
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: like three or four times, and and and I said
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: it already. I want to say it again, despite all
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: the crap I gave you, tremendous camp manager, it's it's
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: tough work. That's I like. I like having your dad
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: and your uncle Steve Brown to kind of be the cample.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: Usually we're out hunting and they're usually the ones hanging
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: back at camp taking care of work. If word gets
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: out though that you do as good as work as
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: you do, I will say it hasn't been too bad,
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: just kind of hanging around camp. Ford and I've been
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: just kind of hanging around camp during the day because
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: he's not hunting. But it's been, um, it's been. It's
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: been a lot of fun actually, just kind of hanging
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: out at camp and it was enjoying the little joy.
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: Good face to sleep. And I think that we all
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: left out to go hunting this morning and you two
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: went right back to sleep. Yeah, heard the same straight
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: shoot straight, Okay, cool. I like my sleeping bag and
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: put it out in the porch. I don't think this
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: is gonna stay out here too long. You guys walked
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: out and went out and grabbed my sleeping bang. I
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: was posted back up in the couch real quick. I
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: had to put my boots on outside and I think
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: I heard snoring before even walk too far away from
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: the cabin. You can't even talk about last night. We're
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: all like it was, you know, we killed the lights.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: We're all, we're all all five of us are crammed
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: in this little one room. We've we've got three cots
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: and then me and josh A sharing a pull out
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: couch and we all laying there. Yeah, it's not a
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: big space, not a big space. And we're laying there
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: kind of doing that kind of BS and a little
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: bit before you fall asleep type thing. And we started
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: talking about some props related things, and and Ford it
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: was like, oh, yeah, I bet you we could get
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: you something like that. And then Greg's like, oh, I
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: don't know. You're you're you're cashing, you're writing checks he
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: might not be able to cash. And then we start
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: talking about this new product that Greg should be designing.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: And then he's like, yeah, you know, I've already thinking
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: through him fifty of the way through. Literally no joke.
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: It wasn't like he was kidding. He literally started snoring
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: seconds after saying that. And then we're we all. I mean,
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: I didn't think it could have been real. Yeah, he
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: is sleeping like that. Are you what is it narcolepsy? Yeah?
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: Is that a real thing for you? It's a gift,
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: you know that I get horizontal and yeah, that's about it.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: Just be able to fall asleep like Greg can. That's true.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: And we were not being quiet laughing to figure out
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: that he was sleeping. Yeah, yeah, that but that I
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: think that might lead to my hot tip in in
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: uh Northern Michigan deer camp. His I would say, pull
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: the batteries out of the obnoxious clock before you cut
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: the propane lights. Oh man. Yeah, So first night we
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: all get here and belly laughing probably continued for thirty
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: minutes or what have you, and we're drifting off to sleep,
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: and and really I had not noticed it until the
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: talking ended. You know, there's this woodstuffs kind of clinking
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: and popping. But behind me is this clock is just
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: hammering it and I feel like my eyes are kind
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: of pulsing with the thing. And I'm like, man, I
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: just I really just met Josh and Mark person. I
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: don't want to be that passive, aggressive camp goer that
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: pulls the clock off the wall and mashes it that
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: I don't even know. I can fall asleep with this thing.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: I'll tell you what. I'm gonna talk to him tomorrow
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: about it so I can get to sleep. Was anybody
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: else thinking, oh yeah, I was. I think we were
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: all thinking like, man, that is loud. I wonder something
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: going to say clocks, I'm laying in bed things. I
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: was already sleeping, so but I was like, oh, wow,
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: that is so loud. That's never been that clock has
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: never it's always been here. It just never is on.
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: I don't think it's ever never worked all the years,
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: and I can remember things got some natural reverb to it. Wow, yeah,
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: it really does. It reminded me. And I don't know
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: why this reminds me because I've read this like twenty
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: years ago, but that Edgar Allan Poe poem. I think
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: it was that we were trying to remember. I feel
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: like there's something to do with this, like loud, yeah,
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: something like that. This clock that just keeps making this
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: noise and drives a got nuts or something like that. Um,
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: And that's what it was reminding me of. So in
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: my head was like, Wow, I'm not gonna be false
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: sleep with that. So I sat there and then I'm
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: like do I want to get up? Like what if
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: they're are sleeping? And then I'm gonna be like making
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: all this noise and then finally I realized, you know what,
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: if anyone's gonna do it, it's probably has to be me, Like,
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: this is my camp, I probably So I stormed out
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: of my bed and went went over there and ripped
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: the battery out. And then as I heard you coming,
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: I was like, oh, yeah, he's going. He's got Everything's cool.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna be able to false sleep. Fine. I'm surprised
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: you just didn't like nudge me like, hey, that it hurts.
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: Can you take care of that? Oh? It made a
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: big difference. So that's my hot tips. Pull the batteries
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: out of the clock before you cut the lights. Good. Good,
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: especially when with new people. Yes, so I guess it's
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: directed to you. Actually, well no, it's can't manage camp manager.
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: I speak to the camp executive though, so take my
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: marching orders from alto responsibilities in there. Yeah I get that. Uh, Greg,
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: do you have a hot tip? My hot tip is
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: to record directly related to kind of the situation where
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: now late season white tails perfect. So if you um fight,
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: and I'm sure most of us do, cold feet, my
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: hot tip relates to that. What you need to do
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: is you go basically purchase yourself the heaviest felt and
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: or durable wool ish fabric. You can find UM and
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: cut yourself out a piece of it that the shape
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: resembles UM the shape of your platform, and throw that
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: down in your tree stand. Is a barrier between your
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: metal tree stand and your boots. UM, and it will
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: significantly reduce the amount of heat that you lose through
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: your boots into your stand. Keep your feet a whole
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: bunch warmer. So if you can't find super thick felt,
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: by the cheap thin stuff double triple layer it UM.
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: If you know something, it's got a sewing machine that
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: can sew it together for you even better. But UM,
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: any type of felt or even I've even used in
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: the past, UM some of the rigid foam insulation pieces,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: but any you can get between your boots and your
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: metal tree stand. UM as an insulation berrier will significantly
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: keep your feet warmer. It's a very hot tip. Can
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: I add a Can I add a plus to that?
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: Since we're going off this like white Tail Mule deer Kick. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: It's spent a fair amount of time this year in
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: the you know what we often refer to the late
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: season second out half of October, which where we are
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: in the mounds, Idaho, you know, could be fully winter
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: in terms of weather. So doing a lot of sitting,
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: still a lot of glassing. Um, and I go back
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: and forth on insulated boots. Actually, my feet sweat real bad,
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: so I kind of try not to run insulated boots,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: but when it's twenty degrees and windy, you kind of
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: want the insulated boots and what have you. To Greg's point,
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: another nifty trick, A lot of people obviously cut the
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: close cell foam or cut what app you know, a
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: pad of some description for your butt when you're hunting
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: in the mountains, cut a second one for your feet,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: and once again you're you're getting your feet off the ground,
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: you're cutting off. That's sort of just the flow of cold,
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: it feels like, from the ground to the rubber your boots. Um.
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: And I think that's kind of a nice halfway point
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: between having a big, heavy insulated boot and running a
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: light and maybe not quite as a warm boot. Do
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: you steal my hot tip? Yeah, you know, I like
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: to think of it as an addendum West East, Yeah, combo,
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: this is I don't know why I thought of this,
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: but related to installation and sleeping bags. I've always heard, right,
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: I feel like I've heard that some people say it's
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: better when you're sleeping and sleeping bag and it's cold, thought,
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: it's better not to wear a bunch of extra layers
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: relative layers. Yeah, do either one of you guys know
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: anything about like what the right or the best way
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: to stay warm and a sleeping bag is. Should you
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: wear a bunch of layers or do you want to
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: reduce layers it's just wear basse layers or I don't
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: know if there's anywhere within the realm of any of
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: you actually have the science on it. Before I offer
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: my on in scientific two cents, and I think you
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: should go first. Oh good, put myself out there. I
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: have never really been man enough to try the naked stuffer.
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: When you say naked stuffer, what do we sell the
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: idea there being? The idea there being that you shouldn't,
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: to your point, be wearing a bunch of clothes. You
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: should have all those clothes in the bag with you,
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: killing the dead space, but you don't necessarily want to
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: have them on you, is the theory. I have never
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: really manned up and tried that. More than you know,
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: in a significant way. I just always feel like I'm
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: plenty warm when I've got extra layers on in my
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: sleeping bag, and I don't feel a need to try
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: the alternative, but haven't given it probably, like I said,
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: more than three nights of of a chance to prove itself.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: I usually wear a bunch of layers, like if it's
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: really cool thought and I'm as sleep back, I layer up. Yeah, totally,
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: but I've I've never tested the theory too, and I've
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: wondered I will I try to. I don't like having
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: a lot of buckles or zippers or you know, uh
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: gramas or you know, kind of anything like that on
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: my clothes. I'm usually in sort of sawt you know,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: wool layers or what have you, but I do generally
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: keep layers on. I have started actually with our Chamberlain
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: puffy or eight hundred pill Puffy. Last year came out
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: with sort of what we call this, you know, super
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: down jacket for lack of a better word, mountaineering grade
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: puppy jacket eight hundred filled down, very very warm. I've
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: actually started taking that and when I'm not using it
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: as a pillow, if I do get super cold, I'll
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: wrap that on top of my sleeping bag, almost like
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: an additional blanket. Um, and that seems to help, you know,
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: I'm sure maybe there are other ways that might be
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: better to do that, but I've definitely done that. It
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: seems to be it seems to be a little warmer. Yeah.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: I mean, now tell me I'm wrong, right, No, I won't.
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: I was gonna fully admit I'm not the authority on
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: this either because I am. I'm a crazy hot sleep
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: bur I just have never really had issues with staying
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: warm when I sleep. Um, So for me, even when
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: it gets really cold, I'm not I can't say that
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: it's the most efficient, but I'll keep a couple of
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: layers on and I'm typically fine. Yeah. So I think
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: the word I wonder if if similar to when you're
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: exerting your like you don't want to become too terribly sweaty.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: You want something quick moisture way when you're hunting or
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: hike or anything. You know, is the same issue present
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: when you're sleeping a sleeping bag, like you don't want
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: to overheat for it? Yeah, I would, I would say
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: it is. Yeah, so I avoid that, but it's hard.
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: Sometimes I think you should keep wearing layers, especially when
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: we're sharing a pull up. Come keep up with the
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: layers at least for one more night tonight. Yeah, you
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: might want to try it today. It might be good
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: to the to the stuffing point though. One one thing
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: that I definitely recommend, which has been a game changer
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: for me, is make sure whatever clothes you're gonna put
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: on in the morning, you stuff in your bag with you,
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: because then not only they're taking to that dead space,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: but they're nice and warm when you throw them on.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: Yeah that's nice. You kind of pull them on in
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: the bag already got out of the bag. And another
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: addendum to that, I would say, I sleep in sort
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: of my core layers, and I don't take those off
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: in the morning, you know. So if I'm wearing long
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: John's into my sleeping bag, I'm gonna get out and
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: put stuff on top of them. I'm really gonna try
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: and avoid taking off any next to skin layers or
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: even mid layers often because you're just that heat just yeah,
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: gone at twenty degrees or whatever when you get out
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: of your bag. Another bag stuffing thought, um uh, we're
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: gonna just not make any more jokes. Um, if you
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: happen to like step in a puddle or in a
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: creek or something, your socks get soaked. Back in the day,
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: I used to think, Oh, the thing to do is
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: hang your socks up. That's not the thing to do.
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: The thing to do is take your wet socks, throw
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: them in the bottom in your bag, or if you're
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: a real man, I suppose is you put them on
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: your torso that's the inside dry them the quickest. If
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: you put them like on your leg or in between
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: your long long john and you're like in between your legs, yeah,
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: I think actually I mean to to to be not
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: to be in appropriate about it, but I think probably
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: inside of your leg is the warmest spot in terms
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: of or you know, and you're the crotches of your
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: armpits um, I think are sort of the warmest areas
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: that will dry that gear the quickest. It won't be
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: super pleasant to stuff a wet sock into your arm
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: bit or into your long right on, but I've definitely
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: done it before and it it certainly works better than
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: hanging a wet sock and thirty two degree weather in
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: your tent. Yeah, that doesn't not not too effective. Okay,
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: so enough of stuffing things. Yeah, the whole stuffing thoughts there, Jordan,
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: Do you want to wrap us up with your hot tip? Yeah,
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: minus one kind of a new piece of gear this
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: year that has allowed me to do a few new things.
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: But if you're a photographer or even someone who's taking
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: like a new hunter out, just to give you a
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: little bit more flexibility, especially on the photo side of things,
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: is try saddle. That's one thing that I've done this year,
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: almost exclusively for photo hunts. That definitely changes the game
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: as far as flexibility, either in the same tree or
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: you know, a different tree, trying to get different different
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: vantage points. But it um it allows you to be
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: a little bit more creative and sneak around a little
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: bit versus just standing or sitting in a tree stand
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: kind of being a little bit more stationary. Yeah. You
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: you definitely you're swinging around doing all those acrobatics in
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: the tree to get different angles of their cameras carefully, carefully. Yes,
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: you never screw things up. And it seems to be
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: a sort of a trend or a I think maybe
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: the correct term would be a retrend almost perhaps the
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: picking up momentum lately. Definitely I'm right there with you. Yeah,
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: you've started recently on the saddle front. And this year
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: another another of our first light team guys, Taylor Chamberlain,
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: who Jordan and I did sort of a suburban hunting
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: short film on um hunts upboards of a hundred fifty
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: days a year in a tree saddle. I think that
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: was sort of a big wake up to Jordan and
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: I in terms of the potential efficacy of of the
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: saddle haunts. Yeah, it's a lot easier to go hiking
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: and wearing what you're gonna be in versus carrying fifteen
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: pounds in your back extra. I mean it saved us
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: probably ten minutes tonight. Yes, save us time, save us. Wait,
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: we had a decent hike in there tonight, hanging hunting,
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: and it was really nice that neither one of us
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: head to carry stamp. So I'm right there with you. Um,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: what's the bald eagle? Sound like you got the rhythm?
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: I've got the caidens down. It's a pitch thing. It's
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: more of a whistle though, when you feel like probably yeah, yeah,
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: h From my advantage point, you're at there one in
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: the cabin. Yeah, I went out inside for a second
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: I heard I heard one out there. They are cool,
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: the same one. They're very cool. Yeah, we saw last
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: night and tonight or this morning tonight, I can't remember
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: America America. Um, alright, Well, any concluding thoughts real quick
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: or any final things we want to add anything we
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: didn't hit that needs to be touched on real fast?
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: My two cold cushions. All right, you guys can see
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: what I'm wearing is an under garments, right, what's the difference?
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: What is it? What are the advantage of like a
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: marino wool over like a synthetic and and you were
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: working like a synthetic and like pretty well kind of
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: hype more compression type two compression type Greg, can you
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: answer the question? But my short answers stank spelled s
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: t A and ka um. There's so there's definitely advantage
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: that both. Um. A synthetic is its pros are that
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: it's going to dry faster. So typically, you know, when
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: we're trying to get guys out guys or gals excuse
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: me outfitted for a hunt. Um, it's largely based off
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: of the environment that they're going to be in, and
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: synthetics will consistently dry quicker than marinos, and inherently that's
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: their benefit. However, what we've found is that what we
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: know to be true UM is that with a marino
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: wool based layer, it's going to regulate your your body
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: temperature better, both on both ends of the extremes. So
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: when it's really hot out that marinos actually keeping you
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: cold or keeping you cooler, and what's really cold out,
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: it's actually keeping you warmer. And that's a hard kind
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: of concept to wrap your brain around until you think
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: about where that wool comes from. That wool comes from
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: sheep that live at really high elevations that in the
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: summer it's really really hot and in the winter it's
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: really really cold. So that's one of the major advantages
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: of it. UM. The second major advantage of marino wool
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: over a synthetic to forward point is going to be
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: stink naturally with no additives, no treatments, UM, nothing additional
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: done to the fiber. It resists odor at the bacteria level,
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: so it doesn't allow bacteria to grow on it. And
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: there for three five seven days in your hunt, you're
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: gonna be able to stand, you know, share sleep bag
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: with yourself for you know, being in tent with a
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: buddy or whatever it might be, UM, or even just
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: you know, be comfortable with your overall hygiene. So that's
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: a big benefit of as well. And I would add
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: to that because as Greg mentioned, it's not a treatment.
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: It doesn't wash out. A marino garment is not going
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: to stink years later also, whereas a synthetic is going
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: to start to get stink your and stink near to
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: the point where it's pretty close to permanently stinking. I've
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: got one. I've got a couple that I feel like
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: I always need to bring because I do feel like
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: they start to build up a stink quicker. But I've
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: got one like I can't even wear any or because
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: exactly and I have three or four of us, and
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: I just the bass layers of something that I haven't
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: invested much time or money into. UM. But I'm starting
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: to realize I think I need to make some changes
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: because I'm wearing stuff that I you know, that I
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: was I would wear growing up in sports and stuff
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: because that's what you wore as a base UM. But
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: I think it's I think I need to You guys
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: know that Josh was an Athlete of the Year in
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: high school. In what capacity across the whole high school.
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: He was the athlete of the year. That's impressive. Yeah,
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: especially was that was that before or after he hit
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: the car with an arrow? That's a great question. Similar
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: time at the same time from you kind of peaked
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: in one capacity and bottom down and that was badminton,
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: kayaking and table ten us. Yeah. Well you told your
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: dad that last week and he was what he say, wow,
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: of judging by you now I'm whereever, thanks Dave. Oh no, no, okay,
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: So that was that was number one? Thank you? Wait
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: what sports did you play? Leaving hanging? It wasn't badman
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: baseball and basketball in all seriousness, like we we for
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: whatever reason, we've turned that into a thing we mock
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: you about. But yeah, you're super good at sports. Thanks,
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: just another reason to make fun of me. Play college baseball, yeah, squash,
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: further hilliard and then number two. I asked Mark this
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: last week, and I don't think he gave me a
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: very good answer. First light, is there is there a
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: meaning behind the name and what's the significance I told
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: you of the logo because that's something I was like,
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: I asked about what I don't know, is there a
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: significance about it, or like I thought, it was like
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: the sun coming behind a mountain. Yeah, you got it.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: I mean first Light is kind of when things happen
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: and in a big game, hunting, you know, world. And
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: the symbol is, uh, you know, the sun coming over
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: the mountains ostensibly of central Idaho where we're where we're based.
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: It's not an X and a D yes the sun
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: peeking over a mountain. We got a lot of that
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: through the years, for sure, that X D brand. It's
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: pretty cool, just like the pistol. Yeah, yeah, all right,
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: that's that's all. That'sn't my two computers good stuff. Well,
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: thank you guys for coming. I had a lot of
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: fun meeting you guys. Yeah, thanks for managing absolutely anytime
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: you hope to have you guys. Speaking from Mark, I
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: love to have you guys back. I like to have
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: you here to the Canyon camp whenever you like. No,
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: I mean, the sentiment is felt from the First Light
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: side of things too. We appreciate you guys hosting us
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: and obviously uh this has been productive on a number
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: of levels, both product development and just hanging out and
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: having a great time and sharing camp with a bunch
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: of great guys. So we appreciate you hosting us and

- 2:00:09Speaker 1: it's just special to be kind of a small part
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: of this tradition. Jordan. Yeah, deer Camp is a special place.
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: It's it's awesome. I think that's a good way to
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: a good way to end it. And I agree, Deer
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: Camp is awesome. Deer Camp as cool as hell. And uh,
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: from my perspective, this is a place that I've come
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: to you my whole life since I can remember. Um,
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: but it has been so cool, or a couple more
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: recent years to get to share it with a few
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: more people and get to see other people experienced this
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: place and come to appreciate the same things I've come
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: to appreciate you now. First bringing Josh into the fold,
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: and that's been really cool. Now getting to, you know,
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: bring a few other people out here that that has,
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: you know, just enriched the history here even more, and
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: uh brought me a lot of joy and and uh,
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: you know, just there's nothing like it all of a
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: sudden here chatting our our neighbor body stopping by last
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: night telling funny stories. I mean, you can't. You can't
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: beat that kind of stuff. You cannot, you can. So uh.
