- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Hey there, Steve Klein here.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Have you ever been right in the middle of something you were looking forward to and suddenly the whole thing started going sideways?
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Maybe you were on vacation, maybe you had planned something special with your family, maybe you had saved money, cleared the calendar, packed the bags, made the reservations, and thought, this is going to be great.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And then something happened, the weather changed, the place was closed, somebody got sick, the car had trouble, tickets didn't work out, the timing fell apart, or maybe nothing dramatic happened at all.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It just didn't go the way you pictured it in your head.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And that can be frustrating, can't it?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes the disappointment isn't only about what happened, it's about the gap between what you hoped would happen and what actually did.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Amazing Life Breakthrough.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I'm Steve Klein, and today I want to talk about those moments when life doesn't go as planned and how to get yourself back on track so one bad situation doesn't ruin the whole experience.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Because we've all had those moments, haven't we?
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: You're having the time of your life, or at least trying to, and then out of nowhere something unexpected happens, and immediately your mind wants to go, well, great, there it goes.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The whole thing is ruined.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: But is it?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Sometimes, yes, something serious happens, and you have to deal with it for what it is.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I'm not talking about pretending everything is fine when it's not.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: There are exceptions.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: There are situations that are heavy, painful, dangerous, or just plain overwhelming.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I know of someone who was caught on a cruise ship right as the COVID-19 pandemic was starting.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure that was not the vacation they had imagined.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: That was not just a little inconvenience that that was a major world event unfolding in real time.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: But even there, they had some positive outcomes.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: They came back with stories, perspective, and experiences they were able to share with friends and co-workers.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And those stories ended up being inspiring in ways they probably never expected.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Now, most of us may not have something that extreme happen, but we've all had the smaller versions of that same story, haven't we?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Maybe you wanted to visit an amusement park on your vacation only to find out it was closed, and that was the only day you had given yourself to go.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Maybe you planned a beach day and it rained.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Maybe you wanted a relaxing dinner and the restaurant lost your reservation.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Or maybe, like me, you're in Colorado, it's the middle of August, and you want to go swimming in a pool only to find out the pool is closed.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: In August?
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, really?
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Who closes a pool in the middle of August?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But that's how life is sometimes.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: You plan one thing and life hands you another, and in that moment you usually have a choice.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: You can let the disappointment take over the whole day.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Or you can pause, breathe, regroup, and ask, okay, what is still possible?
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: That question is powerful.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: What is still possible?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Because when plans fall apart, our minds tend to focus only on what we lost.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: We lost the activity, we lost the timing, we lost the perfect picture we had in our mind.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: But often, if we think about it, we have not lost the whole day entirely.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: We haven't lost the people we're with, we haven't lost the chance to laugh, we haven't lost the possibility of finding something else.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And sometimes the thing you didn't plan becomes the thing you remember most.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Now I'm not saying you instantly feel happy when things go wrong.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: That's not real life.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: When something disappointing happens, let yourself be disappointed for a minute.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Say it out loud if you need to.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: You can say what's on your mind, things like well, that's frustrating.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: This is not what I hoped for.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I'm disappointed.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: There's nothing wrong with admitting that.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: But don't build a house there.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Don't move into the d disappointment and decorate the place.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Feel it, name it, and then start looking for the next good option that you can do on your trip.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: That's the breakthrough.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: A bad situation does not always have to become a bad day.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: A bad day does not always have to become a bad trip, and a bad trip does not always have to become the story you tell for the next twenty years as if nothing good happened.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: You get to decide how much power that moment receives.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: So here are three simple shifts when something goes wrong.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: First, separate the problem from the whole experience.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: The amusement park being closed is a problem, but it does not automatically mean the vacation is ruined.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: The pool being closed is annoying, but it does not erase the mountains, the people, the fresh air, the meals, the conversations, or the chance to do something else.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Second, ask, what can we do now?
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Not why did this happen?
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Not who messed this up?
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Not why does this always happen to me?
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Those questions usually keep you stuck.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: A better question is, what can we do now?
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Can we find another place?
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Can we slow down and enjoy the hotel?
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Can we take a drive?
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Can we find a park?
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Can we get ice cream?
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Can we turn this into a funny memory instead of a bitter one?
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: And third, protect the people from the problem.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: This one is important.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: When something goes wrong, it's easy to take your frustration out on the people around you.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Your spouse, your kids, your friends, the person at the front desk and the waiter, the airline employee, but the people around you are often not the problem.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: They are the ones going through the problem with you.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: So protect the relationship.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Stay kind, laugh if you can, and remember, a lot of memories are made, not because everything went perfectly, but because something didn't, and you got through it together.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: That's where resilience is built, that's where gratitude grows, that's where stories come from.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Because let's be honest, the perfect days are wonderful, but sometimes they don't make the best stories.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: The sideways days do the closed pool, the missed turn, the wrong restaurant and the rainstorm, the unexpected detour, the plan that fell apart and somehow opened the door to something else.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So here's your challenge for today.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Think back to one situation that didn't go the way you had hoped.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was recent, maybe it was years ago.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Instead of only remembering what went wrong, ask yourself, what good still came from it?
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: What did I learn?
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Who was with me?
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: What part of that story can I now laugh about, appreciate, or see differently?
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And if you're in the middle of one of those situations right now, take a breath and ask the most useful question, what is still possible?
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: On Thursday, we're going to go deeper into this.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: We'll talk about how to handle disappointment without letting it hijack your emotions, how to recover when plans change, and how to build the kind of mindset that can find peace even when life throws you a curveball.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: But for today, remember this things may not always go the way you hoped, but there is almost always a way to get back on track and enjoy what is still available.
