Transcript
- 0:00Hey girlies, just a quick reminder before we dive into
- 0:02today's episode. The information shared on this
- 0:04podcast is intended to be general sports nutrition advice
- 0:07and education related to period recovery for female athletes.
- 0:10This is not specific to anyone individual and it may or may not
- 0:13apply to your situation. If you are looking for
- 0:15personalized guidance, be sure to apply to our RBSN Period
- 0:18recovery nutrition coaching program.
- 0:20Our four month period recovery program is designed to help you
- 0:22sustainably get your period back and keep it.
- 0:24You can apply now to get started in our program, and we'll leave
- 0:27the link for the program below if you're not quite ready for
- 0:29that one-on-one approach. That's exactly why we created
- 0:31the Period Recovery Guide. It's designed to support the
- 0:33girlies working on period recovery, specifically if you've
- 0:36lost it due to hypothalamic amenorrhea.
- 0:38The full Period Recovery guide is finally out now, and we will
- 0:41leave all of the information for it in the podcast show notes.
- 0:44This is the Eat More Carbs podcast.
- 0:51Hello and welcome back. This is the More Carbs podcast.
- 0:54It's Jenna here with Riley. We are both dietitians and we
- 0:56talk every Thursday about sports nutrition for the girlies.
- 0:59Today we are doing our What drives this Bananas episode,
- 1:01which is always one of my favorites to do.
- 1:02But before we get into that, we are going to do our high and
- 1:05low. So sharing just a little bit
- 1:06about our week, the good and the part.
- 1:07We wish you gone a little bit differently as always.
- 1:09Riley, can you kick us off? Yes, I have a very special high
- 1:12for this week because the period recovery community is officially
- 1:16launched. So we've been open for about two
- 1:18weeks and now kind of this week we officially launched it
- 1:21publicly. So we're really excited about
- 1:23it. We've been working on it for
- 1:24months. And if you're not familiar with
- 1:26the period recovery community, it's basically a framework that
- 1:29we have taken from our period recovery program and we've made
- 1:32it self-paced and then we've paired it with a community
- 1:35available for athletes just like yourself who are going through
- 1:38period recovery right now. So we're really, really excited
- 1:40about it. We have a ton of different
- 1:42resources and educational tools in there.
- 1:44We're also doing like live calls every single week so can hop on
- 1:48and, you know, chat with an RBSN.
- 1:50Dietitian, we're so excited about the community.
- 1:52It's been something that RBSN has been hard at work on for the
- 1:55past couple of months. Getting that ready for
- 1:56everybody. So super excited and definitely
- 1:58sharing in that. High with you.
- 2:00And it's honestly something that we've been like dreaming about
- 2:02for years, like you and I have been talking about this for so
- 2:05long, Jenna. So it's really fun to kind of
- 2:07like see it coming to fruition. Definitely.
- 2:09So my low also kind of has to do with period recovery.
- 2:11And Jenna, I don't know if you resonate with this at all, but I
- 2:14just think it's really funny. Like now when I go out and like
- 2:18I'm meeting new people or I'm talking to people or I'm talking
- 2:20to my hairdresser, I just think it's really interesting now.
- 2:23Like when people ask me what I do for work and I'm like, oh,
- 2:25I'm a sports dietitian. And they're like, oh, like what
- 2:28do you do? And I'm like, well, we help high
- 2:30level athletes. Like, we work with some
- 2:31professional athletes, we work with Olympic athletes, and then
- 2:34we help girls get their periods back And people are like, what?
- 2:38Yes, I get this a lot where people are kind of like taken
- 2:41aback and they don't really know how to respond.
- 2:43I think it's a lot of times if anybody that's unfamiliar with
- 2:46the HA, which oftentimes happens to be like somebody who's male
- 2:49and they're like, that's a thing.
- 2:51And then you kind of have to like explain a little bit more
- 2:53about it because people are always like really curious about
- 2:56how that happens. And I think that there are a lot
- 2:57of myths, which we've talked about South many times on this
- 3:00podcast about why it happens, how it happens and all of that.
- 3:04At least in my experience, people want to know, like, is it
- 3:06always because of this, like and all of that sort of stuff.
- 3:08So yeah, I'm with you on that. Yeah, I just think it's been
- 3:10really interesting too, like, because we've been seeing a lot
- 3:13of like, Rob's old teammates and hanging out with some, like,
- 3:16former male athletes and they're very invested in the business,
- 3:19which is amazing. But they're like, explained to
- 3:21us like more about this problem. Like we didn't even know this
- 3:23existed. Like girls don't get their
- 3:25period if they're like, have this imbalance.
- 3:27So it's just always a fun conversation starter.
- 3:30It is. A fun conversation starter.
- 3:32I like to look at it that way. Yeah.
- 3:34How's your week going? OK, Riley, I have been so
- 3:36excited to share this with you. A lot of you, when you hear
- 3:39this, you're going to be like, Jenna, you are so behind on this
- 3:42because it's so silly. And I think everybody knew about
- 3:45it before I did. But that's OK.
- 3:46I'm late to a party. And that's just, I guess, how I
- 3:49do things. Have you heard of the app called
- 3:51Focus Friends? No, but I'm also old so please,
- 3:55Please wait. This is where I was too.
- 3:57So we're on the same page here. This app, I guess right now is
- 4:00supposedly like one of the most popular on the App Store and
- 4:03it's designed to help you focus. We have talked so many times
- 4:07about how at RBSN we have a lot of projects running and
- 4:10sometimes I have a hard time focusing on one task at a time.
- 4:13Like if I am, for example, editing the podcast and then I
- 4:16get a notification that client has messaged me.
- 4:18A lot of times I stop what I'm doing and then divert my
- 4:21attention and then I get distracted and I start working
- 4:23on other things. I guess my focus could be a
- 4:25little bit better. This app is designed to help you
- 4:28focus because it helps keep you off of your phone, which
- 4:31sometimes definitely does distract me because some of our
- 4:33tasks that we do at RBSN are on our phone.
- 4:36This app is designed that any time that you ask it to focus,
- 4:39you have this little bean and the bean wants to like knit
- 4:42clothing. And so you can set the timer for
- 4:44how long you want to focus for. But if you interrupt the bean
- 4:47while it's trying to knit clothes, it stops and it gets
- 4:50really sad. And then if you stop the focus,
- 4:53all of the progress that this bean has done with its knitting
- 4:55gets completely lost. So of course Nolan hears about
- 4:58this and he tells me about it, which then creates a little bit
- 5:01of a sense of competition because of course, once you're
- 5:04bean knits a certain amount of things, you can like trade it in
- 5:06and help it like build its room and stuff like that.
- 5:08Like there are rewards set into this, of course.
- 5:11But now it's kind of on this thing of like, how long can I
- 5:13focus? And how can I focus on one thing
- 5:15at a time? Because we both looked at it and
- 5:17we were like, OK, I could set my phone to focus for hours on end
- 5:20and not touch it, but I'd still be doing six other tasks at a
- 5:23time. So now our thing when we use the
- 5:26Focus app is that we have to be focusing on one task at a time
- 5:29in order for it to count. And that's how we're like
- 5:31approaching it because of course we have to make it a little bit
- 5:33of a competition between the two of us.
- 5:34So that's my high is that I have this new app that is so
- 5:38ridiculous, but it's actually pretty helpful and I've been
- 5:40using it for a couple of days. It's so ridiculous, like I'm not
- 5:43kidding, but it's pretty helpful.
- 5:44If you haven't downloaded it, it's free.
- 5:47I just have no words right now. Like I have no words for the
- 5:50Internet. And the fact that you were so
- 5:52bought into the Bean app and I need this Bean knitting thing
- 5:56now. Like, but I feel like it would
- 5:57get obsessed with it because I'd be like, Oh yeah, knit knit,
- 5:59knit, knit, knit, go go, go, go. Exactly.
- 6:02That's The thing is like, you want it to knit more.
- 6:04And of course there's like upgrades that you can buy and
- 6:06stuff like that, but I'm not going to do because that's not
- 6:09how I operate. And we know this, but I want it
- 6:11to knit as many pairs of socks as it possibly can.
- 6:14We need to use this during our meetings.
- 6:15I know. Can you imagine?
- 6:17Off the topic. Then we have to interrupt it.
- 6:19It's actually not a bad idea. We should try it.
- 6:20We should try it. OK.
- 6:21We'll report back on how it's going.
- 6:23OK. I like this.
- 6:24We're going to incorporate it into RBSN meetings.
- 6:26I can't wait. What's your low for the week?
- 6:28If you know me, I really like to have my nails done.
- 6:30This is something that just makes me feel like 5% more put
- 6:33together. It makes me just feel like I
- 6:35have something done, but I really hate getting my nails
- 6:38done. Like I don't like that process.
- 6:40It takes a long time. I don't really have the patience
- 6:42for it. So I try to go as long as
- 6:44possible in between my nail appointments.
- 6:46I know I've told you about this, Riley.
- 6:47Like I will push it to the very last minute to the point where
- 6:49like the gal that does my nails is like, what have you been
- 6:51doing? Your nails look horrible.
- 6:52And I'm like, I know, I'm sorry. Anyway, yesterday I looked down
- 6:55and they looked so horrendous and like that is like such a
- 6:58nice way to say it that I just got up again, interrupting my
- 7:02focus. Here I am.
- 7:03And I clipped off all of my nails, filed them all off.
- 7:07And so for the first time in years, I don't have anything on
- 7:10my fingernails and I feel so weird.
- 7:14Wait, I've like never seen this. I know.
- 7:16For so long and I've never seen. Nothing, nothing.
- 7:20You know, my nails. So I had a bit of a Britney
- 7:23moment I guess, but instead of shaving my head, I took off all
- 7:27my nails. Do you get gel like or do you
- 7:30like dip or you get gel? Yeah, I get gel.
- 7:32So it's like easy because the brand that my nail gal uses is
- 7:36one that you can file off. So you don't need like a drill
- 7:38to file it off because I don't like that.
- 7:40So you can like easily take them off.
- 7:42Like I could take them off on my own without any like acetone or
- 7:44anything like that. And I just looked down and I was
- 7:47like, I can't do this. It's so horrible.
- 7:50I can't be seen in public like this.
- 7:52They look pretty good though. They look clean.
- 7:54It's just so weird I'm used to it.
- 7:56Like at least seeing like somewhat of a longer nail on
- 7:58you. Right.
- 7:59Yeah, me too. So that's my low is that I had
- 8:01AI had a momentary lapse of judgment and you.
- 8:03Have to turn your bean knitting. Off So that's my high and my low
- 8:05for this week, but I'm really excited to share with you kind
- 8:08of the misinformation that we have found online through what
- 8:11drives us bananas this week. We'd love to hear from you.
- 8:13What did you find this week that drove you bananas?
- 8:16Everything is driving me bananas.
- 8:18I'm over it, Jenna. The amount of times that I say
- 8:21it drives me bananas. Insert sentence has
- 8:24exponentially grown since we started doing these episodes.
- 8:27Like it's my way of letting everyone know around me that
- 8:29that is not for me. We need hats.
- 8:32Yeah, or T-shirts or just signs that go everywhere.
- 8:35Literally, I need a little sign that I can hold up, you know,
- 8:37like the wrap it up box at the end of like a speech or
- 8:40something when they turn that on.
- 8:41And that's when you you're cute to know that you need to be
- 8:42done. I need a little sign that says
- 8:44this is driving me bananas. That I can just hold up when
- 8:46things are driving me bananas. This is something that you and I
- 8:49have talked offline about a lot, but we get are so lucky at RBSN
- 8:53because I feel like have such like a positive community around
- 8:57food, working with our clients, right?
- 8:59They're trying to, you know, maximize performance, but then
- 9:02also heal the relationship with food and they're moving in a
- 9:04positive direction. And I think it's so eye opening
- 9:07to me sometimes when I go onto the Internet and I'm like, not
- 9:10in our little bubble and I'm like, what is happening out
- 9:12there? Like all of y'all are just
- 9:13driving me bananas at this point.
- 9:15Yes, it's so true, but there are so many things out there that
- 9:18truly do just drive me bananas. What's going on this week?
- 9:20Like, I know I've been inventing already for three minutes, but
- 9:23what is driving you bananas? OK y'all, I need to get off of
- 9:26Facebook and get out of the Facebook running groups because
- 9:30every time that I go on Facebook, I get bombarded with
- 9:33things that have been posted in groups.
- 9:34Like you don't see your friends anymore when you get on
- 9:36Facebook. Facebook used to be this thing
- 9:38that you used to get on and be like, what are my friends doing
- 9:39on a Friday night? And now you get on and all you
- 9:41see are these ridiculous things about how to improve your
- 9:44running time. And I got on and of course the
- 9:47top posts like someone asks a running page your favorite
- 9:51nutrition advice that made you a better runner.
- 9:55Jenna, I don't even know, but I want to know so bad.
- 9:58I also can't stop myself from clicking on, looking at the
- 10:00comments on these things. I can't stop myself.
- 10:02I keep doing it. Same.
- 10:04I run to the comments because I'm like, I have to know.
- 10:06I know it's going to be ridiculous.
- 10:08I know I'm going to disagree with it and I know it's going to
- 10:10make me heated, but I do it anyway because I'm like, I have
- 10:12to know. I need to know what people are
- 10:14thinking is actually making them a better runner.
- 10:16And the amount of people that were like carnivore, keto, lion
- 10:19diet, things like that, they're like remove carbohydrate, cut
- 10:22out any type of bread or crisp or chip or things like that.
- 10:25And I'm like how are we maintaining, running and
- 10:28removing carbohydrate? So confusing if you're somebody
- 10:31who's like starting running or you're starting your nutrition
- 10:34journey because there's so much of that information on there.
- 10:37But then there, we have to give some people credit that they're
- 10:39in there fighting the good fight and they'll eat carbohydrates,
- 10:42focus on these things, make sure you're hydrating.
- 10:44Like who are you supposed to believe?
- 10:46Right, the vast majority of the comments, if you're just reading
- 10:49through and skimming are telling you to remove carbohydrate from
- 10:52your intake. You're going to go with that
- 10:53just because the majority of comments say that.
- 10:56And the very small minority say make sure you have carbohydrate
- 10:59beforehand, make sure you fueled during your run, hydrate
- 11:02appropriately, recover with carbohydrate and protein.
- 11:05And I'm guilty of the fact that I'm not jumping into that
- 11:07conversation like I'm not engaging.
- 11:09And I think that the reason why is because people are fearful of
- 11:11the response comments that you get from all of those people
- 11:14that are heavy into the carnivore aikido lifestyle that
- 11:18then say something back to you. And I'm just not ready to engage
- 11:21in that type of a conversation online.
- 11:23It's not worth my mental energy. It's not worth my time to spend
- 11:27arguing with people online that they've already decided what
- 11:30they're going to believe about what's the best thing for
- 11:32nutrition for runners, even if it is something that, like I
- 11:35know from a scientific standpoint, is detrimental to a
- 11:38running career. We have had such an increase in
- 11:41applications to our period recovery program because of
- 11:44girlies who are runners and they are trying some of these like
- 11:47low carbohydrate, high protein, high fat diets and it's
- 11:51resulting in them losing their period.
- 11:52Yep. It's so sad that not only do you
- 11:55see that type of rhetoric when you go on to a Facebook group,
- 11:57but it's also something that you see online all the time.
- 12:00We are so fortunate that at RBSN, like you mentioned
- 12:02already, like we have this wonderful supportive, like
- 12:05corner of the Internet that we're in that's a food forward
- 12:07and body positive. And like all of these great
- 12:10things around how we view fueling and how we view fueling
- 12:14your body appropriately. But that doesn't mean that every
- 12:16now and then I don't see something on Instagram that's
- 12:18like how I eat high protein, no refined sugar, and I'm going out
- 12:24and I'm running all of the miles and it just drives me bananas.
- 12:28I also think too that there is a big misconception in are you
- 12:33running or are you training just like are you running or are you
- 12:38competing? Are you training like I think we
- 12:40just generalize everybody because I think it's easy when
- 12:43we look at like club sports. So like when we're younger, when
- 12:45we're high schoolers, right, or we're in college and we're like
- 12:48competing with a team for a championship.
- 12:50We have a set season, But then when you are these like I'm
- 12:54putting recreational and air quotes because y'all are out
- 12:56here, you are not recreational like you run in a sub 130
- 12:59marathon. Well, that's you're breaking the
- 13:01world record there. But if you're running a sub 130
- 13:03half marathon or you're trying to break 3 hours on the
- 13:06marathon, you're a competitive athlete, right.
- 13:09Like we looked at the Boston study, you know in 2022 where
- 13:13the people who are qualifying for Boston are mainly
- 13:15recreational again in air coat runners and or under fueling
- 13:19because you do not realize how active you are.
- 13:21And that's not point today for what drives me bananas.
- 13:24But you do not realize how active you are.
- 13:26Yes. And I think that's so true,
- 13:27especially for runners, is that it's something that like people
- 13:30pick up a lot of times as a hobby or in conjunction to
- 13:33another type of training. And even when they decide I'm
- 13:35going to train for 1/2 marathon, I'm going to train for a
- 13:37marathon, I'm going to trade for A5KA10K, whatever it is.
- 13:40And they start increasing their training and the amount of
- 13:42running that they're doing, but they don't ever consider that an
- 13:45increase in their athletic ability.
- 13:47And they're just like, Oh no, no, I'm not an athlete.
- 13:49Like I just run every now and then and that's not the case.
- 13:51Like we have to approach this from the different perspective
- 13:54that you're an athlete and as an athlete you need adequate fuel
- 13:57to fuel the things in your life that you're trying to
- 13:59accomplish. This actually kind of ties into
- 14:01what's driving me bananas right now because a lot of the time we
- 14:05talked about like people don't realize how active they are.
- 14:08A lot of female athletes do not again, realize how active they
- 14:11are and how much they need to fuel their bodies.
- 14:14I would argue that female athletes who are training as a
- 14:19air quote hobby right not a professional athlete, are
- 14:22actually under more stress and are more likely to have low
- 14:25energy availability and a lack of a menstrual cycle than maybe
- 14:29a professional athlete would. Ooh, tell me why you think that
- 14:32is. I think it's so hard, like as
- 14:35woman, because there's so many different pressures on US,
- 14:39right? And we wear so many different
- 14:40hats and it can be really challenging.
- 14:43And I'm going to kind of like give you an example of my
- 14:45schedule because again, like I'm really lucky that I work at RBSN
- 14:48and we work flexible hours. We work really hard.
- 14:50People though, like we work really hard.
- 14:52We just do it on a flexible time.
- 14:54I wake up at 5:30. I can either rain then or I can
- 14:59possibly fuel then for a harder training session later on in the
- 15:02day. So I either wake up and I work
- 15:04at 5:30 or I wake up and I fuel really quickly and then I go
- 15:07train. I have that flexibility because
- 15:10we own this business, right? So we have that flexibility.
- 15:12But if I wanted to run 10 miles, 15 miles, I would need to eat a
- 15:17big amount of food before I did that.
- 15:19If I had to be at work at 8:00 sharp, I would be waking up at
- 15:22like 433 thirty to eat my breakfast.
- 15:25Nobody's doing that. I'm not doing that.
- 15:27So the only options would be for me to not train or for me to go
- 15:30into my training under fueled. OK, this is such a great point
- 15:34to bring up. As you're saying this, I'm
- 15:35thinking of so many examples that I can think of from clients
- 15:38or even myself about the need to train or our desire to train and
- 15:42the things that we sacrifice in order to do that.
- 15:45And a lot of times it is fueling or it is part of the recovery
- 15:48process. Like sleep.
- 15:50Generally you say to your athletes like if they've gotten
- 15:52under 6 hours of sleep per night, you say that's kind of a
- 15:55cutoff for when they can't train or when they shouldn't train.
- 15:58We know that that's not a great way to walk into training for a
- 16:01number of reasons when you are tired and under slept and under
- 16:04recovered essentially. But if you are someone that's
- 16:07putting that pressure on your yourself because you're like, I
- 16:09have to wake up at 3:00 AM in the morning in order to run X
- 16:12amount of miles because that's what my training plan says
- 16:14before I can go to work. And then you're in work meetings
- 16:17all day and can't fuel because no food allowed and things like
- 16:20that. That like all of these
- 16:21components then lead to under fueling because we put so much
- 16:23pressure on ourselves to accomplish these big goals that
- 16:25we have. But then at the same time, we're
- 16:27considering ourselves not an athlete.
- 16:29So we don't think we need to fuel as one because we're not
- 16:31technically competing for like a first place trophy or anything
- 16:35like that. Wow, that's such a good point
- 16:37that I hadn't really considered before.
- 16:39And you're so right. Most of the time it is the
- 16:41fueling that we sacrifice in order to try to train.
- 16:45Yeah. Because let's be real, like we
- 16:46don't want to sacrifice sleep, so we're waking up later and
- 16:51then we are missing our fueling window.
- 16:53And then tying this back to what you kind of see on the Facebook
- 16:56groups is like people are then reinforcing that like, hey, it's
- 17:00OK, run fasted. Or you can eat a steak the night
- 17:03before. And because of whatever science
- 17:04you believe, it's allowing your body to be fueled throughout
- 17:08about the entire morning. Like are some shenanigans like
- 17:10that. Nothing I think is so hard about
- 17:12the information in those Facebook groups is because a lot
- 17:16of the information that is floating around that is common
- 17:20basic nutrition knowledge is then being reinforced in those
- 17:24groups, even though it's not the right approach.
- 17:27That is such a good point. I think that so many people
- 17:31offer their personal opinions in that group for what's worked for
- 17:34them and it's to combat typically like a certain symptom
- 17:37or side of a negative experience with fueling.
- 17:40So many people are going to say that you should run in the
- 17:42morning without fueling at all or you should run fasted because
- 17:45they hadn't trained their gut or they ate too close to when they
- 17:47started to run. So they experienced a negative
- 17:49side effect. So their solve was instead of
- 17:51eating earlier in the day because they didn't want to wake
- 17:54up earlier, they just chose not to fuel at all, which solved
- 17:56that problem. But what they don't realize is
- 17:58that now they're running in an under fueled state that puts
- 18:01even more stress on the body. That puts us in an increased
- 18:03risk for injury, not just in the long term, but in the short
- 18:05term. If you're not properly fueled on
- 18:07a specific run, there are so many negative consequences that
- 18:10come along with not getting to like the root quote, UN quote of
- 18:13the issue at hand. And then also telling other
- 18:16people what worked for you is also going to work for them.
- 18:18We've talked about this I don't know how many hundreds of times
- 18:20about how unique and how specific everyone's fueling is
- 18:24to themselves and why that works for you.
- 18:27Everybody is so different from what they need to fuel with and
- 18:30what works for them and then what also like their training
- 18:33looks like for the day. It's going to be, like you said,
- 18:34very different if you were to wake up and run like a three
- 18:37mile speed workout than it is for you to run a 12 mile long
- 18:40distance training run like that. Fueling beforehand is probably
- 18:42going to look pretty different and the fueling during is
- 18:44probably going to look pretty different too.
- 18:46And then what you tolerate is going to be different from what
- 18:48I tolerate. So the type of food that we're
- 18:50both choosing, even though both of those things might work
- 18:52really well to fuel either one of us, is going to be different
- 18:55simply because of what we tolerate better.
- 18:56And there's so much information out there and so many options,
- 19:00which is good. But most the time people are
- 19:02just telling you what's worked for them, which was a simple
- 19:04solve to a problem that's way more complex.
- 19:06Way more complex. And that's also also going to
- 19:08take time to figure out what works for you.
- 19:11We have a lot of period of covered girlies who joined this
- 19:14summer and preparation for their fall season, whether that's
- 19:17dance or soccer or lacrosse or cross country, because they want
- 19:22to build good habits and learn what their body likes this
- 19:25summer and preparation for season.
- 19:27And I think that is also something that we see a lot of
- 19:30the time on those Facebook groups.
- 19:31It's like you don't need to just train fasted and like just take
- 19:34a gel. Like when you compete, it's like
- 19:36you're probably going to shoot your pants, but that's not
- 19:39because carbohydrates are bad, it's just because you took the
- 19:42wrong approach when it came to fueling.
- 19:44Exactly. The unfortunate side of
- 19:45nutrition sometimes is that you're going to come across
- 19:47something that like didn't sit well in your stomach, or you
- 19:49didn't like how it made you feel.
- 19:51The good part of nutrition is that there's always something
- 19:53else we can try. Always.
- 19:55And that's usually what I tell people if they're like kind of
- 19:57hesitant to implement something or change something, like all we
- 20:00have to do is try it once and if it doesn't work, let's tweak it.
- 20:03I make this deal with people with spinach.
- 20:05I'm like, just put spinach in a smoothie.
- 20:07I say if you can taste, you never have to do it again.
- 20:10Here's the deal, just try it once.
- 20:11If you don't like it, we don't even have to look at spinach
- 20:13again in your smoothie. Like, don't worry about it, try
- 20:15it, see what happens. They never taste it.
- 20:17They never taste it. You're not going to taste it.
- 20:19But hey, I'm going to make the same deal with you.
- 20:21Like if you are listening to this and you're like, how can I
- 20:23incorporate more vegetables into my feeling plan?
- 20:26Try spinach in your smoothie. If you don't like it, you don't
- 20:28have to do it ever again. So many things just driving us
- 20:30bananas. Probably I could go on and on
- 20:32about the things that drive me bananas.
- 20:34Me too. This is why we have these
- 20:36conversations with you all. Every single month.
- 20:38Just venting about the things that drive us bananas because my
- 20:40gosh, they're just becoming increasingly prevalent, I guess.
- 20:44Yeah, it's a it's a crazy world right now.
- 20:46Is there anything else that's driving you bananas?
- 20:48Oh gosh, yeah, so much. But we'll have to save it for
- 20:50another episode because if I started talking about what I'm
- 20:53thinking of right now, it would take so long.
- 20:55I think everyone Would Be like this deserved its own episode.
- 20:57I have to share one more thing. I have to give a bonus because
- 21:00you and I were chatting about this offline, Jenna, and I am
- 21:02seeing it more and more now. But GLP 1 advertisements for air
- 21:08quotes again, we've got a lot of air quotes on these last couple
- 21:11of episodes, but air quotes for the girls.
- 21:13And I am so sick and tired of the focus on like weight loss
- 21:19for the girlies, on body image for the girlies, these
- 21:22unrealistic pressures that we're putting on the girlies.
- 21:24Wow. I think this ties back into what
- 21:26you said before about like high expectations that are put on
- 21:29girls in general with you have to get up at 3 in order to get
- 21:32your run in if you want to train and all of those things.
- 21:35I think that kind of adds on to it, But this was something that
- 21:37you've said in an episode a really long time ago.
- 21:39So if you've been a listener of the More Carbs podcast for a
- 21:42long time, thanks for supporting, first of all.
- 21:43But secondly, you probably heard us talk about this before, but
- 21:46it was after you gave birth to Charlie and you were talking
- 21:48about the tremendous amount of pressure around a postpartum mom
- 21:52and her snapback or return to body.
- 21:55And then there's this. You have a dad bod.
- 21:57Why is it that we're targeting women specifically for GLP one
- 22:00and weight loss specifically like that marketing?
- 22:03Why? Why is it women specific?
- 22:04Why are we only targeting girls for this?
- 22:07I don't know, but I keep thinking like it's 2025.
- 22:10Like I thought we were over this and we're not.
- 22:13Like it seems to be the same message and it just has a
- 22:16different outer coating depending on what the vibe is in
- 22:20the current moment, right? So like right now it's GOP ones
- 22:23and we're not against GOP ones. I think it just goes back to the
- 22:27why. Like why are you using it?
- 22:29Everything that we do and our recommendations are BSN, like
- 22:32the why is so important. Why are we going after like
- 22:36girlies or athletes in this situation?
- 22:38And there's a lot of like really harmful marketing.
- 22:42And they're going after weight loss not as in a medical reason
- 22:46perspective, but they're going after people's insecurities
- 22:49about their body. And that is what's making me
- 22:51sick. It's also driving me bananas,
- 22:53but it's really making me sick. We've talked offline about this
- 22:56a lot, but a lot of times we see athletes come into the period
- 22:59recovery program who have started some type of weight
- 23:03loss. They get a little bit of
- 23:04positive reinforcement from maybe some improved running
- 23:07times. So that kind of starts to play
- 23:09into this idea that if they were to continue on this weight loss
- 23:12journey, they would see continued improvement in their
- 23:14times or in their PRS and things like that.
- 23:17And then that's compounded with comments from family and friends
- 23:21about how they're taking great care of themselves because we
- 23:24associate that weight loss with a positive why behind it.
- 23:29And sometimes that why behind it isn't positive.
- 23:32And that's what leads to someone applying to the period recovery
- 23:34program because things have gotten too out of hand with the
- 23:38relationship with food, relationship with fueling and
- 23:40the training that they're doing. And now all of a sudden, we're
- 23:42in a very dangerous, for lack of a better way to say it, period
- 23:45of low energy availability. That is such a good point
- 23:48because something that a lot of girls ask like on my QA or a lot
- 23:53of our clients ask is like, will I ever be able to like body
- 23:57recomp like after I'm finished with this program?
- 23:59Because I tried to lose weight before or I tried to body comp
- 24:03or I tried to eat a certain way and I, I had low energy.
- 24:06My bones are now, you know, weaker.
- 24:08I don't have my period. And it's not that we can never
- 24:10recomp you again. It's just the way that you were
- 24:13doing it and the way that you approached it was incorrect.
- 24:15And this ties back to your point because a lot of the time we
- 24:18praise fast weight loss. We think, Oh my gosh, you're so
- 24:21dedicated. You're just so motivated.
- 24:23Wow, Riley, you lost your baby weight in three months, which I
- 24:26don't know, that was just me as an example.
- 24:28But if I lost all my weight in three months, like that shows
- 24:31that I'm not fueling properly. Or if you lost weight really,
- 24:33really fast, you're under fueling.
- 24:35Like that's a big red flag. But then we reinforce that
- 24:37behavior because it's a quick result and that's something that
- 24:40we want to see as a society. It's super interesting because
- 24:43like I think of like celebrities who have maybe dabbled in the
- 24:46GLP one for aesthetic weight loss purposes.
- 24:49And previously they were really talking about like how much they
- 24:52love their body and how body positive they were and things
- 24:54like that. And then all of a sudden they
- 24:56show up a couple months later and they look like a totally
- 24:58different person. And then they receive a
- 25:00tremendous amount of like praise and feedback for how they look
- 25:04now. And I'd imagine that kind of
- 25:05plays into their own insecurities.
- 25:07And I think that's really sad that, like, they felt so much
- 25:10pressure to still change how they look.
- 25:12I don't really want to get into all the details of that because
- 25:15that could be an entirely different episode.
- 25:16Yeah, I think it's just really sad that we put so much pressure
- 25:19on people. I don't know, I think it's just
- 25:20sad. It is and I, I understand
- 25:23because like I used to be there, like I used to put so much value
- 25:27and like what other people thought and my body image, it's
- 25:30really hard to breakthrough, I think and it's really hard to
- 25:33kind of separate it and you really have to go on a journey
- 25:35and it takes time. So if you are listening to this
- 25:38episode and you feel like you kind of like want to go on this
- 25:41journey and you're working on getting your period back, you're
- 25:43working on trying to have like a more positive or neutral body
- 25:46image, keep going like it's hard, but it's worth it and you
- 25:49will be able to get there. I couldn't agree with you more.
- 25:51It's hard work, but it is so worth it in the end.
