- 0:05SPEAKER_07: From Hop Aviation, I'd like to welcome you to the Flyer Show.
- 0:10SPEAKER_07: Hello and welcome to the Flyer Show.
- 0:13SPEAKER_07: I'm EdHicks.
- 0:14SPEAKER_07: I'm Annabelle Cook and I'm Dave Corderwood.
- 0:16SPEAKER_07: And this week we are dreaming of flying from home.
- 0:19SPEAKER_07: Yes, that's right.
- 0:20SPEAKER_07: It's all about uh places where you can live and walk out of your back door and find your airplane and an airstrip.
- 0:27SPEAKER_07: Uh we've been looking for places that are for sale at the moment.
- 0:31SPEAKER_07: Um uh plus we've been looking back at some dream places that have been on the market in the past, so more of that to come.
- 0:38SPEAKER_07: Plus, we've got some brilliant news, and we'll be quizzing each other about what caught our eye this week.
- 0:44SPEAKER_07: Uh, don't forget, if you like what you see here, then uh hit like, uh leave a comment, and subscribe to our channel because it all helps us out.
- 0:53SPEAKER_07: Uh but first it's all about the Sky Demon top tip, and I think this week it's from Rob.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Hi, I'm Rob from Sky Demon, and here's another top tip.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: After planning a route in Sky Demon, you'll notice the warnings tab appear here.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: This is arguably one of the most useful features in the app since it gives an easily digestible list of airspace which conflicts with your plan.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Tapping the little binoculars icon here will zip the map over to the conflict so I can make an adjustment.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Now we have no problem with Bristol CTA, but Merrifield Mat has become a concern.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: Let's plan to fly over this one.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: Now it's removed from the list as well.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Once you've worked down this list, you can be confident that your journey either avoids airspace or that any airspace interactions are deliberately part of your plan.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: For more information, check out our website www.skydemon.ero.
- 2:11SPEAKER_07: Okay, well, I I know one thing my Sky Demon would be giving me a warning about, and it would be like, Ed, do you know what you're doing?
- 2:18SPEAKER_07: Does it do that every time you fly?
- 2:19SPEAKER_07: It does.
- 2:20SPEAKER_07: I programmed it especially.
- 2:22SPEAKER_05: But you must be fairly used to going around the Bristol CTA, Ed.
- 2:25SPEAKER_07: Um, I I don't tour the Bristol CTA very often.
- 2:29SPEAKER_07: It is a fun trip to do, though.
- 2:31SPEAKER_07: You just stay just outside their airspace, then you don't have to talk to them.
- 2:34SPEAKER_07: Not that they want to talk to you.
- 2:36SPEAKER_07: So um, but yeah, no, that is a that's a fun little trip.
- 2:39SPEAKER_07: I can recommend it.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: That'd be a fun trip to do in any weather, but today it's been really cold down here at Wadswick.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: So shall we see whether this is gonna continue for the next few days or whether we're gonna start warming up again?
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Evening, folks! How cold is it?
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: It's fantastic and very exciting to see a classic Arctic maritime airstream.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: I just love it.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: I mean when air masses work, they are fabulous at things.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: This cold air being dragged in from the Arctic and destabilizing the atmosphere and then enabling these convective clouds, accumulus, accumulus clouds, to bring snow showers.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: It's just it's just great.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Um, as you can see and tell as a weatherman, we've had a good few days.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So uh let's see what the weekend holds.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: This is tomorrow.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Now you're gonna want to make the most, I think, of Friday.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Rigid high pressure building in.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: This, by the way, from the uh German uh icon EU model, the times up here in the top right hand corner.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: We've got cloud, we've got overlaid onto this, um effectively forecast radar, and uh we've got isobars on here as well.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: So obviously the cloud showing up as white.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: You see, actually, through most of Friday morning, it's a fair start to the day across many parts of England and Wales, with a ridge of high pressure building in.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Light winds as well.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: A fun though, getting into northern and western parts of Scotland during the course of the late morning into the afternoon, running into Western Ireland, becoming non-VFR here as the wind speeds increase, and bases probably only a thousand to two thousand feet, tops fifteen thousand feet.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: For the rest of us, generally it is going to be VFRable.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Bases coming in probably at around 4,000 feet, tops at 8,000 feet, just increasing amounts of high and middle level cloud, but generally light winds and a decent flying day.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Now, overnight that rainband look moves its way eastwards.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Notice the isobars getting closer together.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: So a windy start to Saturday morning and a damp start too across many parts of England and Wales as that front expands, but also tends to fragment as it moves through England and Wales.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Non-VFR here to kick off um Saturday morning.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: More southeastern areas tending to be better, cloud here, but some showers running onto the coast, and pretty windy for East Anglia, southeast England, southern parts of England as well.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Gust 25 to 35 knots on Saturday morning, much better weather following in behind across Scotland, across a bunch of Ireland, a few showers across northern and western areas, but typical basis 3,000 feet tops coming in at around 10 to 12,000 feet.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Higher basis, of course, in the showers as you get further west.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Now, through the course of the day on Saturday, really the rain is not going to clear that far across England and Wales.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Bit of uncertainty over what happens, but it looks like staying generally non-verfiable for much of the day.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Still quite breezy, East Anglia and the south-east.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Bits of rain getting into western Scotland, southwestern Ireland, northern and eastern Scotland faring better, northern England and Northern Ireland faring better as well, but still rather cloudy, but you see there, quite a damp afternoon, as I say, for England and Wales.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Now that rain continues as we go through the night into Sunday, low pressure spins up and moves its way northwards through Sunday.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Uncertainty over exactly where it's going to be located on Sunday afternoon.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: At the moment, we think parts of England and Wales suffering most.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Front wrapped around it, and they bring rain across eastern southern Scotland, Northern Ireland down through west and southwestern parts of Wales.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Non-FR here and base is probably only a thousand, up to two thousand feet, excuse me, or less, top of 15,000 feet, a few showers across these eastern coasts, some heavy showers getting into England and Wales, and certainly running into the southern coast of England, perhaps a little bit better for northeast England, but generally I'm afraid it's not looking particularly brilliant for Sunday either.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Um so I think make the most of Friday if you can.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Now, what are you doing on the Tuesday evenings of the 2nd and the 9th of December?
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: You need to get yourself to Aviation Weather School Part 1.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: I've got to be running my live online course.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: It's presented by me right the way throughout over these two consecutive Tuesday evenings.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Um, this is for everybody, regardless of your experience from pre-PPL right the way through to commercial pilots.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: My aim is to get you understanding the weather more and to take you beyond that PPL or ACPL net, um, and to build your confidence in your own ability to be able to understand the weather and to forecast the weather and to use forecast from official sources.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'll get you planning five days in advance, and I will get you flying more and get you flying more safely.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: And book your place now at weatherschool.co.uk.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Uh or you do go to aviation and click on Aviation Weather School, the live online course.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: You'll find all the information that you need there, and uh you can book your place by just clicking on the right hand side.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: It would be absolutely super to see you there.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Okay, leave you with that for now.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Have a great, have a safe flying weekend.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Thanks again for watching.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Keep the sun shining and bye for now.
- 7:51SPEAKER_07: Okay, uh, should we take a look at what's uh news this week?
- 7:54SPEAKER_07: Dave, I think you're first.
- 7:55SPEAKER_05: Yes, I am.
- 7:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's uh Trig Avionics got a bit of news.
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: They've unveiled the TT23.
- 8:00SPEAKER_05: This is a new compact modest transponder, uh, smaller and lighter than previous models.
- 8:05SPEAKER_05: There are two versions of it: the TT23 with an internal GPS, and the TT23 without a GPS.
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: The one with the GPS is going to cost£2,650.
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: The TT23 with no GPS,£2,330.
- 8:21SPEAKER_05: Now it's uh the TT23 is a certified class one mode S unit with ADSB out capability.
- 8:28SPEAKER_07: And this is this is in their compact line, isn't it?
- 8:31SPEAKER_07: This is the little two and a quarter inch unit.
- 8:33SPEAKER_07: That's right, yeah.
- 8:34SPEAKER_05: And in fact, the the outside of it, the control, the bit you see and you work, that's the same as the others.
- 8:39SPEAKER_07: So you'll you'll Okay, the little control head is the same as the previous, as the previous transponder.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 8:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, Trigger said it's 15% lighter than earlier designs, making it suitable for aircraft where weight is a real issue.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Um and uh uh apparently there's an STC on the way to allow integration with uh popular third-party navigators.
- 9:01SPEAKER_05: So as well as its own TN72 Triggs.
- 9:05SPEAKER_07: GPS sort of TN72, yeah.
- 9:07SPEAKER_07: That's it.
- 9:08SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_05: So operators not planning to fit an ADSB, it functions as a straightforward modus modus transponder.
- 9:14SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 9:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 9:15SPEAKER_07: Well that sounds good.
- 9:16SPEAKER_07: And I do like I know the trig the compact trig products are brilliant.
- 9:19SPEAKER_07: And like you say, for lightweight, I mean it's one of the reasons I put one in the cub.
- 9:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 9:23SPEAKER_07: Um they are they they are fabulous and really popular little units.
- 9:27SPEAKER_07: So um great to see um great to see Trig uh pushing forwards on that.
- 9:31SPEAKER_07: So who's next?
- 9:33SPEAKER_07: Uh I think that might be me.
- 9:34SPEAKER_07: And uh I think that's uh that there's some Skyfly news.
- 9:37SPEAKER_07: Now, Skyfly, uh the British company that brought us the Axe eVTOL.
- 9:42SPEAKER_07: Um we've spoken about that because this year they made uh they made a f uh the first e VTOL cross-country flight.
- 9:50SPEAKER_07: Um and uh they've taken their prototype to the States, and that's now in the hands of legendary test pilot Elliott Seguin, which is really exciting.
- 9:59SPEAKER_07: Um so the uh the axe went uh across to the USA, partly for Oshkosh, to raise the company's profile there, where it was um it's it's certainly garnered a lot of attention because uh there are a lot of Americans going, what the hell is this?
- 10:13SPEAKER_07: Um and also they want to start flight testing in the US, partly for um the better weather during this winter, and obviously um you know, towards uh getting the aircraft approved in the US too.
- 10:25SPEAKER_07: Elliot brings uh experience of uh flying with electric and fixed wing and rotary wing test experience, because obviously he's done a whole bunch of stuff for uh he did Ampere with their electric eel, and I think he I remember he flew that in the UK.
- 10:41SPEAKER_07: He did at one point.
- 10:42SPEAKER_07: Um and obviously he's flown the SkyRise.
- 10:46SPEAKER_07: Skyrise, yeah.
- 10:47SPEAKER_07: The which is the the the new automated version of a Robinson R R66.
- 10:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 10:55SPEAKER_05: I mean the Skyrise is fascinating in itself.
- 10:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_05: Because it um basically almost anybody who can fly an airplane can jump in and fly a helicopter.
- 11:02SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I know and and I know Elliot was involved with that, and I think for the for the um Skyfly team, uh, because when they've been testing in the UK, so uh their founder, um uh Michael Thompson, he's got rotary experience.
- 11:16SPEAKER_07: So I know he's done some of the hovering stuff with the axe.
- 11:19SPEAKER_07: Bill Brooks has done the the wing-borne stuff with the axe, but Elliot brings a combination of both things uh to the team.
- 11:27SPEAKER_07: Um, so that's useful for them.
- 11:29SPEAKER_07: Obviously, Elliot has flown with scale composites in the past uh and a whole bunch of other Mojave-based um experimental flight programs over 22 years.
- 11:39SPEAKER_07: Um he's done 22 first flights, uh holds 12 world records, and logged 7,500 hours on 150 types.
- 11:46SPEAKER_07: That's quite good going, isn't it?
- 11:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 11:49SPEAKER_07: Um so yeah, I'm interested to see where that goes.
- 11:51SPEAKER_07: Um uh Michael Thompson, who's uh uh Skyfly CEO, says Elliot's blend of rotary wing and fixed wing knowledge alongside electric propulsion flight test experience makes him a perfect fit for Skyfly.
- 12:05SPEAKER_07: Um Michael went on to add, uh, we're excited not only about where Elliot's involvement with serial number one takes us, uh, but where we're moving towards with the next type-conforming airframe, and they're already building serial number two here in the UK.
- 12:20SPEAKER_07: Um, so that's gonna be interesting times.
- 12:23SPEAKER_07: I know people can be a bit, you know, bit kind of phased out with e VTOL stuff, but I think this is genuinely this is like a really sweet spot for e VTOL stuff.
- 12:32SPEAKER_05: Yes, yeah.
- 12:33SPEAKER_05: I think you I can imagine the US being a big market for them as well, once they're once they've completed and got something ready for sale.
- 12:39SPEAKER_07: Yeah, because it fits uh the changes in mosaic that um have literally clicked into place uh in October, it brings on some some some stuff to do with batteries and um an electric flight that uh perfectly aligns with their mission.
- 12:53SPEAKER_06: So Annabelle?
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, so this weekend it's the annual aviators ball, which is raising, of course, valuable funds for air ability.
- 13:03SPEAKER_04: So as well as the three-course dinner, the free drinks, music and entertainment.
- 13:08SPEAKER_04: Uh alongside the ball, there is the chance to um get money can't buy items.
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: It well, obviously can buy in this case, um, in the silent auction.
- 13:19SPEAKER_04: Um and as part of that, you, yes, you, uh could win a flyer show experience.
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: That's with a capital E.
- 13:27SPEAKER_07: Wade, what I don't need to bid on that.
- 13:29SPEAKER_07: I get to do this every week.
- 13:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: And you yeah, do you pay to do this?
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: No.
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: Maybe we should.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: Um the winner will join us right here at the Wordswick Studio.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: We might even put the heating on.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: Um they'll get to see how we prepare, record, and edit the show.
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: And if you'd like to, you'd also appear on the show.
- 13:49SPEAKER_04: Wang.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: Um and Ian has also said that he will buy them lunch at Forage.
- 13:54SPEAKER_07: Ah, oh.
- 13:57SPEAKER_07: It is a great place to eat.
- 13:59SPEAKER_04: Um in the unlikely event that that uh doesn't appeal.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: There are, I think, around 110 other lots available.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: Um obviously I won't go through all of those right now, but a couple of highlights that I spotted were a flight in a wasp um and some signed artwork from the Red Arrows.
- 14:17SPEAKER_04: You could add that to your collection.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, maybe I think some crayon drawings or something may reply.
- 14:24SPEAKER_07: We'd love to see that.
- 14:27SPEAKER_04: I'm very sad that there isn't a giant orange hand this year because um I I bid on one like I think three years ago.
- 14:34SPEAKER_07: That was that was your chopper product, wasn't it?
- 14:36SPEAKER_07: It was, yes.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh the uh giant uh orange hand from a Chinook display team.
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: I feel like I need a matching pair, but one second one hasn't come up.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: Um so Airability says whether you're joining us at the ball or bidding from home, every bid will help air ability to continue changing lives through aviation.
- 14:54SPEAKER_04: Browse the prizes, place your bids, and keep checking back as we get closer to the night of the ball.
- 14:59SPEAKER_07: Fantastic.
- 15:00SPEAKER_07: And it's a really worth it's fundraising for arability is um there's not many better charities.
- 15:05SPEAKER_07: I'd there's probably no better charity really.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: So actually, they were recognised this week by the king.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: They were.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: Of course.
- 15:12SPEAKER_07: Congratulations.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: They were kings of all for voluntary services.
- 15:16SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:16SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, great work.
- 15:17SPEAKER_07: So uh yeah, anything that uh that can help raise money for the work that they do is a good thing.
- 15:22SPEAKER_07: And I think if people go to the air ability ball, they will get to meet the famous RL Cook.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: Notorious.
- 15:28SPEAKER_07: Notorious.
- 15:30SPEAKER_04: Yes, yeah, I'll be there.
- 15:32SPEAKER_04: Um Ian actually quite often goes, but this year he'll be at Pilot Careers Live in Rome, won't he?
- 15:38SPEAKER_07: Okay, so you're flying flyer flag.
- 15:40SPEAKER_04: Oh no.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: That's not good.
- 15:43SPEAKER_04: Happy to do that if I can have the company credit card Ian.
- 15:45SPEAKER_04: Thanks.
- 15:46SPEAKER_07: Okay, yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_07: So earlier we talked about the dream of flying from home, and uh we've been looking uh looking around at places that you can buy.
- 15:59SPEAKER_07: So buy a house and you get some land and uh for a strip and space for a hangar.
- 16:05SPEAKER_07: Uh and you might think that there's not many of these things around, but actually, we've managed to find three that are on the market right now.
- 16:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 16:12SPEAKER_07: Uh all pretty exciting stuff.
- 16:13SPEAKER_07: Plus, uh we've uh gone back in time and looked at um some hangar homes that have come up in the past that have really uh really wetted our appetite.
- 16:23SPEAKER_07: Uh Dave, I think you're gonna go first, aren't you?
- 16:25SPEAKER_05: I am, yeah.
- 16:26SPEAKER_05: My practical choice of the the first one is uh near Udimore in East Sussex, I think that's how you say it.
- 16:32SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 16:32SPEAKER_05: East Udimore.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: East Sussex, yeah.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: You can say that bigger.
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: Um this is just under a million quid, so yeah, okay.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: But yeah, for East Sussex, everything's pricey down there.
- 16:41SPEAKER_05: It's a period barn conversion and Oast House.
- 16:44SPEAKER_05: It's got stunning great views of somewhere called the Tillingham Valley.
- 16:48SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 16:48SPEAKER_05: Even though I'm from the South East, I don't actually know that.
- 16:52SPEAKER_04: You're missing out, Dave.
- 16:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, 12.5 acres of gardens and pasture land.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: It's even got its own uh vine vineyard as well.
- 16:59SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 17:00SPEAKER_05: I'm in.
- 17:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm in.
- 17:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_05: But most importantly for us, it's got a private airstrip uh with an aircraft hangar.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: The strip is just 300 metres long.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: I'm out.
- 17:11SPEAKER_05: So uh it's gonna you've gotta be you've got to be on the money to uh to to get in and out of there.
- 17:17SPEAKER_05: And it's probably not for anything like Cessna 182, Ian's 182.
- 17:20SPEAKER_05: But uh, if you've got a micro light or something with you know stonking performance, yeah.
- 17:25SPEAKER_05: You could go in and out there.
- 17:26SPEAKER_05: It's um it I mean it's you can see the pictures, it looks looks lovely, I think.
- 17:30SPEAKER_07: Yeah that does look really nice.
- 17:32SPEAKER_07: The strip looks a little bit steep, and I'm I'm like you say, one way in, one way out.
- 17:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 17:36SPEAKER_07: But um, but sometime sometimes living with your airplane at home, you have to make compromises on the type of strip that you've got.
- 17:43SPEAKER_07: It's rare.
- 17:44SPEAKER_07: Under a million.
- 17:45SPEAKER_07: Yeah, under a million quid.
- 17:47SPEAKER_05: Uh but 12.5 acres.
- 17:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's a decent plot of land, yeah.
- 17:51SPEAKER_05: That's a very nice property to do that.
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: Look it up my more fantasy choice.
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 17:57SPEAKER_07: And I think was this one that might have featured in your in a in a in a live stream fancy hanger choice in the past.
- 18:04SPEAKER_05: Uh no, no.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: That one was the one in in which was a chunk of Tuscany, something like 30 million quid.
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: Much as I'd love to do that.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: But no, I found another one uh in France.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: Uh at the agent caught it at a place called Montfracun.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: Beg your pardon?
- 18:19SPEAKER_05: I think I say Frank.
- 18:20SPEAKER_07: Bless you.
- 18:20SPEAKER_05: I think I say you said.
- 18:22SPEAKER_05: In fact, because in France, estate agents are always paranoid about losing the you know, the obvious the property to somebody else, another agent.
- 18:29SPEAKER_05: Anyway, I eventually tracked it down because the house has been used in uh films before, apparently movies.
- 18:35SPEAKER_05: Oh and on a website called Film France, I found it anyway.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: Anyway, it's a place called the Chateau Le Mon Zoe, that's below the agents uh cover.
- 18:45SPEAKER_05: It's uh overlooking the Lotz Valley, which is about two-thirds of the way down France.
- 18:49SPEAKER_05: So you get in the nice weather, it's into stunning countryside.
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_05: Um, 18 hectares of meadows, woods, fields, and school, and orchards.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: It's not huge, just a mere four-bedroom house.
- 19:00SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 19:00SPEAKER_05: And I have to say, inside, although it's been recently redecorated, is hideous.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: I think the blue beams are my favourite feature.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: 18 exposed beams blue.
- 19:11SPEAKER_05: I mean bright blue as well, not just any object.
- 19:13SPEAKER_05: Do you think the pre the current occupants are Smurfs?
- 19:16SPEAKER_05: That's the only explanation.
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: Outside, though, it is gorgeous.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: It's a local stone and a really nice place for really nice locations.
- 19:25SPEAKER_05: The strip is it says it says more than 400 metres.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: So 401.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: 401.
- 19:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:30SPEAKER_05: Um apparently it's registered for microlites.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: I don't know if you have to register.
- 19:34SPEAKER_07: I think in France there is a there is a a specific rule where you have to you sometimes have to assign a strip's use to a type of aircraft.
- 19:44SPEAKER_07: So that might be a thing.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: It's apparently it's at the foot of the property because it's on a slight hill.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: Um, and presumably it gets flatter down by the closer to the river.
- 19:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:54SPEAKER_05: Um I went looking for it on Google Earth to see, try and find the strip itself.
- 19:59SPEAKER_05: It it it just looks like a just a field.
- 20:01SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 20:02SPEAKER_05: That's okay.
- 20:02SPEAKER_05: That's okay.
- 20:03SPEAKER_05: It's just just really just a field.
- 20:04SPEAKER_05: But anyway.
- 20:05SPEAKER_05: Is there any hangarage?
- 20:07SPEAKER_05: There is.
- 20:08SPEAKER_05: Um there is because I could I couldn't be sure where the strip itself was, but this big field, but the whole property comes with a bit of a farm.
- 20:17SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: A bit of a farm adjacent to it, and looking at some of the from there, there's plenty of room there for a hangar.
- 20:23SPEAKER_07: Okay, so you can definitely fly from home with that dream.
- 20:26SPEAKER_05: And that's also about a million quid, actually.
- 20:28SPEAKER_05: You know, property in France is a lot cheaper.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: It's a lot cheaper, it's a real steal.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: It's on Miss Seville's, should you want to have a look.
- 20:34SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 20:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_07: Well, well, we'll put a link for all of these um uh in the description.
- 20:40SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 20:40SPEAKER_07: So um Annabelle, what did you find?
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: So on sale right now is this stunning estate in Lancashire.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: This is not just one home, but three, yes, three separate properties and a 560-meter airstrip.
- 20:56SPEAKER_07: Get you with your long airstrip.
- 20:58SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: Um not only that, you also get a hangar, a garage, a workshop, and I quote, multiple outbuildings.
- 21:08SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 21:09SPEAKER_04: Um, all set in 89 acres of land.
- 21:11SPEAKER_07: 89?
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: Oh, wait, 89 acres.
- 21:15SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 21:15SPEAKER_04: And I think this is an absolute bargain at two and a half million pounds.
- 21:21SPEAKER_07: That sounds pretty punchy, but you're not going to be able to do meeting.
- 21:24SPEAKER_04: However, I'm gonna because there's more.
- 21:26SPEAKER_07: Oh, there's what wait.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: But wait, because two of the properties are already established, Airbnbs, so you've got an income, and some of the land could be rented out.
- 21:37SPEAKER_04: Um so I think this is actually quite a solid business proposition.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: So if anybody fancies teaming up with me, drop me an email because I'd love to buy into this, but can't quite afford the full two and a half million.
- 21:48SPEAKER_04: That is a little bit short.
- 21:49SPEAKER_07: It does that.
- 21:49SPEAKER_07: Is one of those that looks like one of those places where you go, oh, there's some numbers to be run there.
- 21:55SPEAKER_07: Because an Airbnb business, you go, and that's that's probably a little Bit touristy around there, maybe?
- 22:01SPEAKER_07: I think so, yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 22:03SPEAKER_07: So you go, okay, I can I can Airbnb a couple of the properties.
- 22:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 22:07SPEAKER_07: I can I can have home.
- 22:09SPEAKER_07: Live in an outbuilding.
- 22:11SPEAKER_07: Rent the house.
- 22:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 22:13SPEAKER_07: That's um okay, two and a half million.
- 22:15SPEAKER_07: That's quite punchy, but that is a lot of it's doable.
- 22:18SPEAKER_07: That's a lot of stuff for your money.
- 22:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:21SPEAKER_07: Um if you were going to dream, what would it be, Annabelle?
- 22:24SPEAKER_04: Um, so not on the market right now, but possibly one of the best homes and businesses in the UK with an airstrip on the doorstep is Glen Forsa on the Isle of Mole.
- 22:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: Um longtime owners, Brendan and Allison, have been looking to retire for a couple of years.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: So they have had this property on the market.
- 22:47SPEAKER_04: Um, I think they've just taken it off for the winter season.
- 22:50SPEAKER_04: Um but if you're not familiar with it, Glen Forsa is a 15-bedroom hotel.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: It's about eight acres of land.
- 22:57SPEAKER_04: Um, there's also a couple of lodges on the site.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: The the airfield is not included in the sale, but is literally a hot skit and a slide down the muddy slope from the edge of the hotel's land.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: Um it's owned by a local authority.
- 23:13SPEAKER_07: But I think it's I think it was it was put in for the purpose of being able to you know get aerial services, so that's unlikely to go away.
- 23:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're really positive that um that that arrangement would be able to continue.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: And I think um, yeah, it's one of those places where uh if you haven't been in particular enforcer, you should have a lot of people.
- 23:32SPEAKER_07: And it is people do talk about it.
- 23:34SPEAKER_07: It's like you know, aviator pilots mention it to other pilots.
- 23:38SPEAKER_07: And it is one of those places that when you've been there you really understand.
- 23:41SPEAKER_07: And it's it's a place that you can just stand there and and you can if it if if it's not there flying on when there's they're really busy, yeah.
- 23:48SPEAKER_07: If you're just there and it's is just it's stunning, it's good.
- 23:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it's spectacular.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: And of course it is the home as well of um our dear departed friend Keith for a mighty um who we all uh pitched together and bought a bench in his own.
- 24:03SPEAKER_07: There is a bench, there's Keith's Bench.
- 24:04SPEAKER_07: Keith you can sit and stare out over the the water with a with a glass of whiskey from the bar in the hotel.
- 24:11SPEAKER_04: It's mandatory.
- 24:12SPEAKER_07: He would be grimacing.
- 24:14SPEAKER_07: Um yeah, because I know he doesn't like whiskey, but uh but I think he said I he said I will we'll raise a toast to Keith with whiskey anytime.
- 24:22SPEAKER_07: But yeah, no, I yeah, Glenn Forcer, that is a that's a dream spot.
- 24:26SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:28SPEAKER_07: Doesn't it mean though you have to become a hotelier?
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: I'll just employ one because this is a fantasy.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: So I'll employ managers and then I can just pop in and out when the weather is good, which it always will be because this is still the fantasy.
- 24:39SPEAKER_07: And I'm guessing being a hotel, I mean what better place to go to invite all your mates?
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: Uh all.
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: All I think if I invite a friend.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: I think if I ever became a hotel, I hope I would slip into the Basel, the Basel 40 uh mode.
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: I just couldn't I couldn't avoid it.
- 25:00SPEAKER_04: Anyway, Ed, can you beat what we have found?
- 25:04SPEAKER_07: I'm not sure.
- 25:05SPEAKER_07: Maybe my fancy choice.
- 25:07SPEAKER_07: Um uh so on the I found um a really fabulous place um on the market right now.
- 25:14SPEAKER_07: And uh again, under the million pound budget.
- 25:18SPEAKER_07: Um so uh in the village of Whitwell, which is on the Isle of Wight, is this four-bedroom cottage uh dates back to uh the mid-1880s, uh, but adjacent in well in the back garden is a 370-meter grass strip uh with a tea hanger, 9.5 metres by 7.9 meters, so pretty big.
- 25:40SPEAKER_07: Um and it's got substantial grounds, uh, it's been used for equestrian um stuff in the past, uh plenty of outbuildings, it's got stables, and the current owners have been there for 30 years, and I happen to know that one of the um one of the people there has built a couple of aeroplanes, um uh because it's uh it's an someone I know with a with an RV.
- 26:03SPEAKER_07: Um, but they're looking to move on.
- 26:05SPEAKER_07: But yeah, I'd imagine living on the Isle of Wight.
- 26:08SPEAKER_07: So you go, you go, you don't have to use Sandown or Bembridge, you've got your own airstrip on the island.
- 26:14SPEAKER_04: You could commute into work, you could just buy that and then just simply fly to Wadswick.
- 26:19SPEAKER_07: Uh yeah, in the in the reliable times of the summer.
- 26:23SPEAKER_04: But it's the Isle of Wight, it's always summer there, isn't it?
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, today would have been a challenge.
- 26:28SPEAKER_07: Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 26:29SPEAKER_07: Um so that's on the market for 895k.
- 26:33SPEAKER_07: Um, but yeah, and that's that's kind of cool.
- 26:35SPEAKER_07: Um uh an island home with an airstrip.
- 26:39SPEAKER_07: So that I I kind of like that.
- 26:42SPEAKER_07: My dream though, uh, is this uh we featured it uh last year, and I know lots of people um uh commented on it at the time as being a dream for them, too.
- 26:52SPEAKER_07: It's a hangar home in the Cotswolds, and it was 4.75 million, but it was 75 acres, and the house and the facility uh the strip and the hangars were all incredible.
- 27:06SPEAKER_07: Um the house sits at the end of a 300-meter driveway, has five bedrooms, five bathrooms, open plan kitchen.
- 27:13SPEAKER_07: There's even a wellness hanger.
- 27:15SPEAKER_04: A wellness what?
- 27:17SPEAKER_07: I I'm not sure.
- 27:18SPEAKER_07: I I can totally get behind the idea of wellness hanger, but I'm thinking the whatever the wellness hanger was wasn't my idea of a wellness hanging.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: No, wellness is just opening the hanger and there's an aeroplane.
- 27:27SPEAKER_07: Exactly, yeah.
- 27:28SPEAKER_07: And tools and other stuff.
- 27:29SPEAKER_07: I'm getting it had, I'm guessing it might have been to do with wellness activity like yoga.
- 27:35SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 27:36SPEAKER_07: Um all the aviation facilities, so runway, three hangars.
- 27:40SPEAKER_07: Abyss.
- 27:41SPEAKER_07: Yes, under complete ownership and control of the um the owner of that estate.
- 27:47SPEAKER_07: Um so it's yours to do with what you please.
- 27:50SPEAKER_07: 750 meter runway that's well drained, um, and it was uh advertised as operable all year round, uh, had full planning permission and had a certificate agreement with HMRC flying overseas and all of that.
- 28:04SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 28:05SPEAKER_07: Um I know that did change hands.
- 28:08SPEAKER_07: Some lucky person managed to buy that, but that was I that is just a stunning place.
- 28:13SPEAKER_07: I you'd yeah, you'd feel feel like you'd died and gone to heaven if you if you'd if you'd if you'd live there.
- 28:19SPEAKER_07: I mean, to be honest, I'd be I'd be happy just living in a hangar with my own frame.
- 28:23SPEAKER_07: Oh waves.
- 28:24SPEAKER_07: I know, I know.
- 28:25SPEAKER_07: I'd I'd I'd sometimes look at the the hanger homes that you see in the States where it's literally a hangar, and then the second floor above the hangar is like a like a bungalow.
- 28:36SPEAKER_07: And that would be I think I would I would I would love that kind of thing.
- 28:39SPEAKER_07: And I know in the UK, I'm is there there's the guy who does hanger homes.
- 28:43SPEAKER_07: You will know his name.
- 28:44SPEAKER_06: Peter Day.
- 28:45SPEAKER_07: Peter Day.
- 28:45SPEAKER_07: He's proposed a whole bunch of hangar homes like like my simple dream, hasn't he?
- 28:50SPEAKER_05: He has, yeah.
- 28:51SPEAKER_05: I mean he's still fighting, well, fight fighting's not really the word.
- 28:54SPEAKER_05: He's still negotiating with uh Ferrum to build them at Solent Airport.
- 28:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:58SPEAKER_05: Not sure that's really gonna happen down there, but he's making much better progress in Northern Ireland.
- 29:03SPEAKER_05: He's had some luck over there, isn't he?
- 29:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:05SPEAKER_05: The the the the the uh and it's killing.
- 29:08SPEAKER_05: I think that's where he's and they they're they're welcoming him, and the local authority, more to the point, is welcoming them as well.
- 29:14SPEAKER_05: So uh there's hopefully they'll they'll they'll get make progress, yeah.
- 29:18SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so yeah, it's I think it's one of those things, unfortunately, large-scale hang-a-home options in the UK are probably always going to be a bit of a pipe dream, but there are places that you can buy and fly from home, and I think they're just I I don't know any aviator that doesn't, you know, that is cold to that idea, because I think it is just a dream, isn't it?
- 29:39SPEAKER_07: So um yeah.
- 29:41SPEAKER_07: So have you seen anywhere that you can buy uh you can fly from home?
- 29:45SPEAKER_07: Maybe you're lucky enough to fly from your own home.
- 29:48SPEAKER_07: Tell us about it in the comments.
- 29:49SPEAKER_04: Or if you want to go into business with me up in Lancashire.
- 29:52unknown: Yeah.
- 29:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah, become an Airbnb baron with Annabelle.
- 29:55SPEAKER_05: So um so you're getting good vibrations, that idea.
- 29:59SPEAKER_05: I'm getting the excitations, Dave.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: Cup news.
- 30:06SPEAKER_04: So we've still got a few days left of November.
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: Free landings for this month.
- 30:10SPEAKER_04: Quick reminder we've got Wolverhampton, Eshot, Dunkerswell, and Easter.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: Uh for December, I've already got Canarfen lined up.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: Um and I'm yeah, I'm hoping we've already had about£550 worth of free landings this year.
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: I'm hoping to get that over the£600 mark by the end of December.
- 30:31SPEAKER_07: That's a chunky saving.
- 30:32SPEAKER_07: That's money.
- 30:33SPEAKER_07: And if you were in the market for like an AR headset, that's money you could spend on instead.
- 30:38SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 30:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: Or just a couple of tanks of fuel.
- 30:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:42SPEAKER_04: Keep it simple.
- 30:43SPEAKER_04: Um, coming up for the Fly Club webinars, I'm arranging something on um icing with Nigel Webb.
- 30:50SPEAKER_04: Um, and of course, flyer club members can get all past webinars on catch-up.
- 30:55SPEAKER_04: So, most recently, we had our good friend Edward here um talking about talking about air-to-wear photography.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: Other recent ones, we had Dr.
- 31:06SPEAKER_04: Frank Verton on lifestyle changes to keep you flying.
- 31:09SPEAKER_04: Um, and Green is of course doing us one on forced landings.
- 31:13SPEAKER_07: They're a good back catalogue to dip into, especially in um if the weather's not so flyable.
- 31:18SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 31:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, all of that for just 60 pounds a year.
- 31:24SPEAKER_07: And where do you have to go?
- 31:25SPEAKER_07: You have to go to flyer.co.uk forward slash membership.
- 31:30SPEAKER_07: Brilliant.
- 31:34SPEAKER_07: Okay, so it's that time of the week where I ask the question, what caught your eye?
- 31:39SPEAKER_07: And I'm gonna go today first.
- 31:41SPEAKER_05: Well, actually, I'm probably cheating a bit, but I've got two things that caught my eye this week.
- 31:45SPEAKER_07: What?
- 31:45SPEAKER_07: And you've got props as well by the bit.
- 31:47SPEAKER_05: And this is the first thing that caught my eye.
- 31:50SPEAKER_07: It's a turbine blade.
- 31:52SPEAKER_05: It's a turbine blade.
- 31:53SPEAKER_05: It's broken.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: It was No, it's not broken.
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: This is how it's uh it's got holes in it.
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 31:58SPEAKER_05: Yes, but this is the same thing.
- 31:59SPEAKER_05: But that's not amongst yourself.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: The impressive thing about a turbine blade is that they get very, very hot, obviously.
- 32:06SPEAKER_05: And it has air passing through.
- 32:08SPEAKER_05: I'm surprised at that.
- 32:09SPEAKER_05: It has air passing through through through it.
- 32:12SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 32:12SPEAKER_05: To cool it down, cool down the tips, which is a bit where it gets very hot.
- 32:15SPEAKER_04: I I can nerd about this.
- 32:17SPEAKER_04: So did you know that the the melting temperature is actually higher than the it's it hang on, let me know.
- 32:24SPEAKER_04: Hold on.
- 32:24SPEAKER_07: The run temperature is higher than the melting temperature of the blade.
- 32:28SPEAKER_04: But it's it's because it's actually made from a crystal.
- 32:31SPEAKER_04: It's grown as a crystal.
- 32:33SPEAKER_04: That's why it doesn't melt.
- 32:36SPEAKER_07: It's very cool, yeah.
- 32:37SPEAKER_07: Anyway, why have you got a turbine blade?
- 32:39SPEAKER_07: Well I spot I spotted it.
- 32:41SPEAKER_07: I spotted it.
- 32:41SPEAKER_05: You spotted it in an engine and just on Twitter, and uh Darren Lewington of AeroTeaks um was was just promoting them, talking about how wonderful turbine blades are.
- 32:52SPEAKER_05: And I just saw I just he's yeah, basically sold it to me.
- 32:56SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 32:56SPEAKER_05: Guess how much that cost?
- 32:58SPEAKER_05: Well, it's and I paid my own money for this.
- 33:00SPEAKER_07: You paid your own money.
- 33:00SPEAKER_07: £45.
- 33:01SPEAKER_07: It's quite small, so I'm guessing that was it was um it was reasonably priced.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: £6.99.
- 33:07SPEAKER_07: £6.99?
- 33:08SPEAKER_05: Yes, the only thing I can think of doing with it apart from sending it, yes, is it a pay paperweight.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: But since we're all digital You just put it on your iPad.
- 33:19SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 33:19SPEAKER_07: Do we know what it's from?
- 33:21SPEAKER_07: It's an A320.
- 33:22SPEAKER_07: An A320, that's an airliner.
- 33:24SPEAKER_07: Isn't that like that's got a really big fan?
- 33:27SPEAKER_05: And this is a really tiny blade.
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't it may not be the whole blade.
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: It may only be a part of it.
- 33:32SPEAKER_04: Well, I did say it was broken, but you said it wasn't.
- 33:34SPEAKER_07: Well, I don't know whether it was.
- 33:36SPEAKER_07: Do you think it's it's it's one of it's what like one of the little turbine blades from further back?
- 33:40SPEAKER_07: Not the bit it's yeah, it's ugly, not the big fan.
- 33:43SPEAKER_05: I I just read the ad and bought it.
- 33:46SPEAKER_07: That is and that they are um they are we'll we'll put some photos um so that you can appreciate the tiny details in this blade.
- 33:54SPEAKER_07: Um but yeah, you wouldn't believe that um that it was quite so intricate, would you?
- 33:59SPEAKER_07: No.
- 33:59SPEAKER_07: So, and did you say you had something else?
- 34:01SPEAKER_07: I did, yes, I'll have to be very quick.
- 34:03SPEAKER_07: I'm so excited about this.
- 34:05SPEAKER_07: Nothing else.
- 34:06SPEAKER_07: No other props.
- 34:07SPEAKER_07: Is it gonna be gonna go?
- 34:08SPEAKER_07: And I have this rubbit in my pocket.
- 34:10SPEAKER_05: So the other thing I spotted this week was that the Royal Aeronautical Society had their light aircraft design conference and they announced the winners of the uh the last design.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: Design competition competition.
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: And the the they set a task each time, and the task this time was to design a next generation generation six to eight seat amphibious aircraft capable of seamless operation on both land and water.
- 34:35SPEAKER_05: And the winner of the competition was I'm trying to get this from the.
- 34:40SPEAKER_07: I know this is gonna be a pronunciation.
- 34:41SPEAKER_07: It's gonna be a pronunciation.
- 34:42SPEAKER_07: I've seen this in the past, yeah.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: This team behongo.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: Bihongo.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 34:47SPEAKER_05: Yes, they're from Bangladesh.
- 34:48SPEAKER_05: And uh they did they redesigned the an albatross um amphibian, if you like.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: They call it the Albatross Skywave, um, and it it's powered by two turboprop engines.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, it's got the usual things you might expect on one V-shaped hull, contractible gear, and wingtip floats.
- 35:06SPEAKER_05: Um, and this particular because they're from Bangladesh, which frequently suffers from flooding, it's actually got some r real relevance to them.
- 35:15unknown: Okay.
- 35:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:16SPEAKER_05: There's been quite a lot of activity about bringing back the Groman albatross.
- 35:20SPEAKER_07: We've seen a few different news stories over time, haven't we?
- 35:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: So it'd be interesting to see whether this goes anywhere.
- 35:25SPEAKER_05: They also announced the next competition.
- 35:27SPEAKER_07: Which I think is um this time around, it's all about designing a stall airplane, isn't it?
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: That's right, a stall airplane with up to maximum uh weights of 2,000 kilograms.
- 35:36SPEAKER_05: And the idea is to service passenger and light cargo transport amongst remote island communities.
- 35:42SPEAKER_05: So perhaps you're Isle of White.
- 35:44SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 35:44SPEAKER_07: Yeah, well, my my 370-meter strip would be perfect.
- 35:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: So the deadline for entries is 31st of August uh 2026.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay, so you've got some time.
- 35:54SPEAKER_05: Got some time.
- 35:55SPEAKER_05: It's all designed around the academic year.
- 35:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:57SPEAKER_05: So that um it's to encourage academics.
- 36:01SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 36:01SPEAKER_07: Very good.
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: Annabelle.
- 36:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so what caught my eye this week is this footage from 1969 of Lady Gwen Belleieu, who was Britain's second woman to get her hot air balloon license.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: Who was the first?
- 36:17SPEAKER_04: Do you know what?
- 36:18SPEAKER_04: I haven't.
- 36:19SPEAKER_04: I meant to look her up and I forgot.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: Um and the footage is her final lesson before her test.
- 36:27SPEAKER_04: Um, this is brilliantly outdated.
- 36:29SPEAKER_04: They're wearing scooter helmets for safety.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: A large group of men is on hand to make sure she does it all properly.
- 36:35SPEAKER_04: Um, and a village policeman uh turns up to note down their details when they land in a field, and it's all voiced over by a woman with a brilliantly plummy accent.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: In a few days' time, Gwen Bellew will sit her test.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: She's been having lessons now for 18 months.
- 36:52SPEAKER_07: Um That policeman, it looks like I mean looking at it now, he looks like he's like um what's the word I'm looking for?
- 37:03SPEAKER_07: I don't know what I'm looking for.
- 37:05SPEAKER_07: Um yeah, but it if you imagine it's like he's like the policeman from Mr.
- 37:09SPEAKER_07: Ben or something, isn't it?
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: Yes, he's very very pleased with himself in his notebook, isn't he?
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: I wonder if he's if he's still around.
- 37:15SPEAKER_07: Stereotypical is the answer, is the word I was looking for.
- 37:18SPEAKER_07: It's like if you imagine a policeman from the 1960s, that's what it would turn up.
- 37:24SPEAKER_04: Um and I did actually look up Gwen Balieu to find out what had happened to her since.
- 37:29SPEAKER_04: And actually, um it turns out that three generations of her family went on to become balloon pilots.
- 37:35SPEAKER_04: So I think that was at least her son and his I think his wife and two grandchildren, and I think a a a brother or something as well.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: So it's it's very much stayed in the family.
- 37:44SPEAKER_04: So it happens.
- 37:45SPEAKER_07: I know how and how did you end up coming across that?
- 37:47SPEAKER_04: Oh, so someone sent it to me, actually.
- 37:50SPEAKER_07: Hey Annabelle, check this out.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you'll like this.
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: It's got a women pilot in it.
- 37:54SPEAKER_04: And some fantastic voiceovers.
- 37:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's it's about six minutes long.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: It is definitely just worth a little watch, though.
- 38:00SPEAKER_04: Just it's yeah, it's fun.
- 38:02SPEAKER_07: I don't yeah, the the scooter helmet in a uh balloon is a good is a is a is an intriguing look.
- 38:07SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 38:08SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yes.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: Very good.
- 38:10SPEAKER_07: Me.
- 38:10SPEAKER_07: Uh so last week you might remember I got all excited because I stay much.
- 38:16SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I know, I know, I I live a sheltered life.
- 38:18SPEAKER_07: Um, but uh I had spotted the Chichester Mars Leopard in the um in the Farmborough 1990 footage from the BBC.
- 38:27SPEAKER_07: And um uh while I was doing some follow-up on that, I stumbled across stumbled upon this.
- 38:33SPEAKER_07: Um uh and I think this would have caught the hearts of many a GAA pilot because it was penned by Stelio Fratti, the Italian designer who brought us the Falco and the SF-260.
- 38:45SPEAKER_07: Um so it turns out that Fratti dreamed of a two-seat jet spore plane.
- 38:50SPEAKER_07: Uh imagine a Falco in jet form.
- 38:53SPEAKER_07: You're having a giraffe.
- 38:54SPEAKER_07: I know, yeah.
- 38:55SPEAKER_07: And so if you imagine that, you're probably there.
- 38:57SPEAKER_07: So um Fratti did have some history with uh designing jets.
- 39:01SPEAKER_07: He designed the ProKea F-400 Cobra and the Promavia jet Squalus, uh, both uh beautiful, and well, but but quite beautiful designs, but weird names.
- 39:11SPEAKER_07: Um but this F-1000 concept was just uh it was just a little uh just real pretty looking.
- 39:19SPEAKER_07: Um and it was under development uh around about early 2003.
- 39:23SPEAKER_07: Uh it's got an engine on the rear fuselage, like you see, uh, that protects uh protects the jet from the ingestion of foreign objects.
- 39:32SPEAKER_07: Um and the engine, while not named, was in the 750 to a thousand pounds of thrust category.
- 39:38SPEAKER_07: Sadly, apart from this one picture and a line drawing that I found, there's not very much other info about this.
- 39:44SPEAKER_07: But I think that is a real beauty.
- 39:45SPEAKER_07: And if that had been that's the kind of thing you would you'd walk, you'd shut down and sh leave on the flight line, and as you walked away, you'd turn around and look back and go, My god, that's nice.
- 39:57SPEAKER_07: I think you can say that, but all Falco, all all of the all of Frati's designs are all um, well, it's Italian design, isn't it?
- 40:03SPEAKER_07: It's beautiful, but um I su jets can sometimes be a you know, yeah, can not be you know, they're not the most beautiful of things.
- 40:11SPEAKER_07: Ian was a bit cruel about the Chichester Miles Leopard last week being a bit angular.
- 40:15SPEAKER_07: But this is a real this uh this F 1000 from Frati.
- 40:19SPEAKER_07: I I would have loved to have seen that built, because that is a real pretty aeroplane.
- 40:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:24SPEAKER_05: I remember when Diamond was fooling around with a single engine jet.
- 40:28SPEAKER_07: There was a time, wasn't it?
- 40:29SPEAKER_07: It was like it was a revitalized time of everyone being obsessed with very light jets, wasn't it?
- 40:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I mean it Diamond finally admitted that actually making a single engine jet as opposed to a twin was really difficult.
- 40:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, where do you put the engine?
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:44SPEAKER_05: It's just not an easy thing to do.
- 40:46SPEAKER_07: That's it, yeah.
- 40:47SPEAKER_07: So maybe that's why this uh this F 1000 from Frati remained a concept.
- 40:51SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_07: So anyway, so if anything that of our what caught your eye has caught your eye, then tell us in the comments.
- 40:59SPEAKER_07: And equally, if you've seen something amazing, tell us about it.
- 41:04SPEAKER_07: Is it time for some events, Dave?
- 41:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's it's quite time of year, but there are a few.
- 41:08SPEAKER_05: Um this Saturday in Rome, Italy.
- 41:11SPEAKER_05: There's the Pilot Careers Live uh event.
- 41:13SPEAKER_05: This is the last one of uh this this year.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: Um, next year we start all over again.
- 41:18SPEAKER_05: Um also on Saturday, there's a Christmas fair at the Army Museum in Middle Wallop.
- 41:23SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 41:24SPEAKER_05: Um should you be over near Stomarie, the Great War Aerodrome in East Anchor.
- 41:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh from it starts to today, Thursday, the 20th, and goes through to the 4th of December.
- 41:36SPEAKER_05: There's a Christmas lunch on offer.
- 41:37SPEAKER_05: Okay, wow.
- 41:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the next flying I can find is actually on 6th of December, the Christmas flying at Compton Abbas.
- 41:45SPEAKER_07: Ah, I think I knew that was coming.
- 41:47SPEAKER_07: That's a nice place to go for Christmas.
- 41:49SPEAKER_07: Very much so in December.
- 41:50SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 41:51SPEAKER_07: Uh so it just remains for me to say thanks to uh Dave and Annabelle for joining me, and thanks to you for watching.
- 41:58SPEAKER_07: Uh, and also thanks to Sky Demon.
- 42:00SPEAKER_07: We couldn't do it without their support.
- 42:02SPEAKER_07: Um so uh we'll see you again next time.
