Transcript
- 0:09Last time, we traced the lives left behind after
- 0:11NXIVM fell. We watched as key figures, Allison
- 0:15Mack, Claire Brumpman, Nancy and Lauren Saltzman,
- 0:18were sentenced, released, or disappeared from
- 0:20public view. We followed the survivors, many
- 0:23of whom are still rebuilding from the wreckage.
- 0:26We saw the culture shift, policies emerge, and
- 0:29institutions finally admit this wasn't just a
- 0:32cult. It was a mirror. Now in this final episode,
- 0:36we move from exposure to explanation. not just
- 0:39the what, but the how. This is the part where
- 0:42we strip back the curtain and show you the system
- 0:45underneath. A model of manipulation used not
- 0:48just by NXIVM, but by all cults, high control
- 0:51groups, extremist movements, and abusive relationships
- 0:54around the world. We'll examine how Keith Raniere
- 0:57and Nancy Saltzman built that machine, how they
- 1:00hand selected the architect, how they recruited
- 1:02with charm, broke people down, and reconstructed
- 1:06their minds in NXIVM's image. and how one of
- 1:09the most visible faces of the group, Allison
- 1:11Mack, was transformed from a young, hopeful actress
- 1:14into a zealous recruiter of slaves. We'll end
- 1:18this series with a warning, not to scare you,
- 1:20but to prepare you. Because groups like this
- 1:23don't always look like cults. Sometimes they
- 1:26look like your mentor, your yoga teacher, your
- 1:29growth tribe, your life coach, or even yourself.
- 1:33We're going to talk about how to spot the signs,
- 1:36how to ask the right questions. And what to do
- 1:39if you suspect you're already inside something
- 1:41you didn't choose. I'm Rick Welch, and this is
- 1:45of Sashes and Slaves. When Keith Raniere first
- 2:15began laying the foundation for Nexium in the
- 2:17late 1990s, his motives weren't spiritual. They
- 2:20weren't even philosophical. They were personal
- 2:23and deeply predatory. He wanted sex. He wanted
- 2:27admiration. He wanted access to women who wouldn't
- 2:30leave, even when the red flags were flying. His
- 2:34genius wasn't in his intellect, despite his self
- 2:37-declared world -record IQ. His genius was in
- 2:41disguising exploitation as transformation. He
- 2:44read human nature like a con man reads a mark.
- 2:47He studied neuro -linguistic programming, Scientology,
- 2:51and Amway. He filtered all of it through a lens
- 2:54of pseudo -ethics, with buzzwords like rational
- 2:57inquiry, limiting beliefs, and ethical breach.
- 3:01But he wasn't doing this alone. He needed someone
- 3:04to make it legitimate, someone who could speak
- 3:06the language of therapists, educators, and professional
- 3:08development circles. And he found her and Nancy
- 3:12Salzman. Nancy Salzman was a nurse, a therapist,
- 3:16and a certified expert in neuro -linguistic programming.
- 3:19She believed in personal transformation. She
- 3:21had worked with trauma survivors. She wanted
- 3:24to help people change their lives. So when she
- 3:28met Keith in 1998, she was instantly captivated.
- 3:31not sexually, but intellectually, emotionally,
- 3:34and spiritually. He told her she was meant to
- 3:37teach, to lead, to be the prefect in his new
- 3:40organization, what would become Executive Success
- 3:43Programs, or ESP. Together they created the curriculum.
- 3:49Keith wrote the core tenets. Nancy translated
- 3:51them into exercises, modules, and emotional breakthroughs.
- 3:55It worked. Clients cried. Clients changed. And
- 4:00most importantly, clients kept coming back. And
- 4:04as the money rolled in and the testimonials piled
- 4:06up, Nancy stopped questioning the shadows. She
- 4:09heard the rumors. She knew Keith was sleeping
- 4:11with his students. She saw women get thinner,
- 4:14more anxious, and more obedient. But she looked
- 4:17the other way, to protect the brand, the mission,
- 4:21and to protect her own status as the woman behind
- 4:23the genius. In court, she would later admit this,
- 4:28quote, I trusted the wrong person. I wanted to
- 4:31believe we were doing good." Keith and Nancy
- 4:35began assembling a team, not randomly but with
- 4:39precision. They didn't just want followers, they
- 4:41wanted tools. People with unique talents who
- 4:44could build and protect the system. They found
- 4:47the Bromfman sisters, Claire and Sarah, heiresses
- 4:50to the Seagram's fortune. They were searching
- 4:53for meaning, and Keith sold them vision. They
- 4:55became the financial engine. He recruited Mark
- 4:59Vicente. A filmmaker and director of What the
- 5:02Bleep Do We Know? Mark gave NXIVM its aesthetic.
- 5:06Videos, testimonials, documentaries that made
- 5:08it feel polished, cinematic, and scientific.
- 5:12Sarah Edmondson came next. Bright, empathetic,
- 5:15a natural recruiter. She sold the dream. She
- 5:19ran intensives. And more importantly, she filled
- 5:23rooms. Then came the biggest get. Allison Mack.
- 5:28A television actress with millions of fans. international
- 5:31recognition, and a heart desperate for purpose.
- 5:35Keith didn't just invite her in, he groomed her
- 5:38for leadership. She would become his most devoted
- 5:41enforcer, the one who turned belief into obedience,
- 5:44and obedience into branded flesh. When Alison
- 5:48Mack was born in 1982 in Germany, her family
- 5:51moved quickly to Southern California where she
- 5:53was raised amid headshots, auditions, and sets.
- 5:57Her parents, especially her mother, supported
- 5:59her creative talents. So by age four, she was
- 6:02doing modeling and commercial work. By seven,
- 6:05she had landed her first acting job. She was
- 6:07sweet, intelligent, and camera ready. And the
- 6:10camera loved her. Allison grew up in a world
- 6:13where performance was identity, where praise
- 6:15meant value, and where attention equaled love.
- 6:19She never knew a life that wasn't being watched.
- 6:22Throughout the 1990s, Allison appeared in a stream
- 6:25of family television shows and movies. Seventh
- 6:28Heaven, Opposite Sex. Honey, we shrunk ourselves."
- 6:32She was cast as the girl next door, the loyal
- 6:35best friend, the one who made the lead feel understood.
- 6:39In 2001, everything changed. She was cast as
- 6:43Chloe Sullivan on Smallville. It was a breakout
- 6:46role. The show became a cultural phenomenon.
- 6:50Allison, still in her teens, now had international
- 6:53visibility. But with success came pressure. She
- 6:56was working 14 -hour days, managing contracts.
- 7:00facing public scrutiny. And underneath her bright
- 7:02energy and fame was a young woman still forming
- 7:05an identity. She didn't party, and she didn't
- 7:08rebel. She was polite, driven, and focused. But
- 7:12she was also lonely and searching. By her mid
- 7:17-twenties, Allison had grown weary of Hollywood.
- 7:19The roles felt shallow, the red carpets just
- 7:23repetitive. She began talking openly about wanting
- 7:26something more. A way to be of service. a way
- 7:29to become, as she often put it, the highest version
- 7:32of herself. That's when she found NXIVM. Or rather,
- 7:36NXIVM found her. She was introduced by a friend
- 7:39who said it had changed their life. It wasn't
- 7:42religious. It wasn't dogmatic. It was, they said,
- 7:45transformational. Allison took a five -day intensive
- 7:48in Vancouver. She walked out electrified. She
- 7:52said it gave her tools she'd never gotten in
- 7:54therapy or college. She felt seen. What she didn't
- 7:58see yet was that this was the first step in behavior
- 8:01control, the B in the bite model. Behavior control
- 8:05in high -demand groups begins subtly. Change
- 8:08your diet, track your progress, check in with
- 8:11your coach, make a commitment, and cut out all
- 8:13distractions. Allison began journaling obsessively.
- 8:17She took more courses. She stopped watching TV.
- 8:20She adopted the NXIVM language with terms like
- 8:23ethical breaches, suppressives, or parasitic
- 8:26strategies. She started dressing more simply.
- 8:29She gave up roles that didn't reflect the mission.
- 8:32She moved to Albany. And she stopped asking questions.
- 8:36Because in NXIVM, behavior wasn't just monitored,
- 8:39it was quantified. Your growth was ranked, leveled,
- 8:43and sash -colored. And obedience was progress.
- 8:48Allison wanted to grow, so she obeyed. Behavior
- 8:52control alone wasn't enough. For transformation
- 8:55to take root, the group needed to shape her perception
- 8:57of truth. Nexium controlled information by limiting
- 9:01outside media, encouraging journaling but discouraging
- 9:05private expression, using coded language, discouraging
- 9:08contact with non -integrated friends and family.
- 9:13This is information control, the eye in the bite
- 9:16model. Allison began cutting off relationships.
- 9:19She stopped reading entertainment news. She dismissed
- 9:22criticism of Keith as jealousy. She believed
- 9:25the world didn't understand. One former Nexium
- 9:28member said, quote, The scariest thing about
- 9:31Allison is that she was sincere. She really thought
- 9:34she was helping people. She was fully inside
- 9:37it. End quote. She wasn't hiding. She was preaching.
- 9:41On social media, in seminars, and on stage. And
- 9:46Keith was watching. Keith saw Allison's fame
- 9:49not as a liability, but as an opportunity. He
- 9:52wanted her closer, more involved. And eventually,
- 9:56inside DOS. He began grooming her to recruit
- 9:59other women into his secret society, telling
- 10:01her she was special, telling her she was ready,
- 10:04telling her she had earned her next level of
- 10:07growth. She submitted her own collateral to him
- 10:10– nude photos, family secrets, legal documents.
- 10:14Then she took a vow of obedience, and she began
- 10:17the same process with others. all in the name
- 10:28of empowerment. To outsiders, she was an abuser.
- 10:32To Keith, she was a tool. But to herself, she
- 10:36was still a believer. Behavior shapes patterns.
- 10:40Information shapes perception. But thought control,
- 10:43that's where transformation turns to entrapment.
- 10:46By the time Allison Mack was inducted into DOS,
- 10:48her critical thinking had been eroded, not by
- 10:51force or by drugs, but by language, repetition,
- 10:55and emotional rewards. Eye control groups don't
- 10:58just control what you do or what you read. They
- 11:01control what you think about what you read. What
- 11:04you should think. What is correct. What is ethical.
- 11:09This is thought control. It is the T in the bite
- 11:13model. Nexium had entire modules dedicated to
- 11:16thought reconstruction. Human pain and the value
- 11:20of suffering. Suppressives and the need to eliminate
- 11:22them. Parasites versus producers. The value of
- 11:26obedience. the nature of the noble lie. Allison
- 11:30learned to reframe pain as growth, to reinterpret
- 11:33hesitation as weakness, to view outside critics
- 11:36as parasites, people who didn't earn their insights.
- 11:40This wasn't accidental, it was deliberate. When
- 11:43members expressed doubt, they were told things
- 11:46like, that's just your inner parasite trying
- 11:48to stay alive, or you're hitting a growth edge,
- 11:52or discomfort means you're on the right path.
- 11:55This constant feedback loop resistance equals
- 11:58progress, made it almost impossible for Allison
- 12:01to trust her own intuition. If she flinched at
- 12:04branding someone, it wasn't a red flag. It was
- 12:07a sign that she was too emotionally attached.
- 12:10She was told to let go of her ego, to sacrifice
- 12:14for the greater good, to be strong enough to
- 12:16hurt others if it meant helping them grow. That's
- 12:19thought control. You're no longer choosing. You're
- 12:22executing the programming someone else gave you.
- 12:25Now emotionally, NXIVM ran on shame and fear,
- 12:28but like everything else, it didn't look that
- 12:31way from the inside. Instead, it looked like
- 12:34accountability, feedback, ethical guidance, and
- 12:37high -level compassion. When Allison showed signs
- 12:40of guilt, she was told it was an attachment to
- 12:42her old narrative. When she questioned branding,
- 12:45she was told she had a fear of power. When she
- 12:48expressed sadness, it meant she was still clinging
- 12:50to emotional dependencies. There was no room
- 12:53for regret, self -preservation, or empathy outside
- 12:57the group. Members were taught that emotions
- 13:00were parasites, and the only emotions worth keeping
- 13:03were loyalty, gratitude, and commitment. When
- 13:06she cried, she was reminded, tears don't mean
- 13:09truth, they mean resistance. Allison internalized
- 13:13that deeply. She stopped crying, she stopped
- 13:16questioning, and eventually she started commanding.
- 13:20This is the E in the bite model. Emotional Control.
- 13:24The Byte model developed by former Mooney and
- 13:27cult recovery expert Stephen Hassan outlines
- 13:30the four pillars of control that define a high
- 13:32-control group. Behavior control, such as regulating
- 13:36diet, sleep, appearance, rituals, and time. Or
- 13:39information control, filtering, access, controlling
- 13:42narrative, or labeling descent. Thought control,
- 13:45redefining words, thought -stopping, binary worldviews.
- 13:49Or emotional control, which features shame, guilt,
- 13:53fear, phobias. and conditional love. Nexium didn't
- 13:56just check each box. It perfected them. Alice
- 14:00and Mac didn't fall into this system overnight.
- 14:03She was slowly restructured, layer by layer,
- 14:06until the person she'd been no longer existed.
- 14:09In her place stood a disciple, convinced she
- 14:12was saving women while destroying them. It's
- 14:15tempting to think of Nexium as a bizarre anomaly,
- 14:18an outlier, a sex cult led by one manipulative
- 14:21man. But that's not the full truth. The real
- 14:24danger of NXIVM wasn't Keith Raniere, it was
- 14:27the system he built. A system that can be replicated,
- 14:31modified, and passed along. NXIVM is just one
- 14:34example. Others exist. In pyramid schemes and
- 14:37self -help franchises. In mentorship tribes and
- 14:41accountability pods and healing communities.
- 14:44They use the same tools. Just different slogans,
- 14:47different outfits, and different gods. This is
- 14:51the uncomfortable question. not whether you would
- 14:54join a cult, but whether you already belong to
- 14:56something that uses cult -like methods. So ask
- 14:59yourself, do I feel guilty when I think about
- 15:01leaving? Is disagreement seen as betrayal? Am
- 15:05I rewarded for compliance more than curiosity?
- 15:08Do I ignore my own discomfort because someone
- 15:10told me it's growth? If so, you're not alone,
- 15:14and you're not broken. But you may be in the
- 15:17early stages of indoctrination. Recovery starts
- 15:21with awareness. and awareness starts with naming
- 15:24the system. Begin by learning about coercive
- 15:27control, and the bite model is a good place to
- 15:29start. Talking to someone outside the system
- 15:32who you trust, reading stories of others who've
- 15:35left high control groups, listening to the discomfort,
- 15:38not as weakness, but as wisdom. Leaving is hard,
- 15:42unlearning is hard, but freedom is real, and
- 15:45so is healing. Before this story ends, we need
- 15:48to go back. Back to the moment before the escape.
- 15:52when everything still looked like loyalty, when
- 15:54members whispered doubts but swallowed them whole,
- 15:57when they still believed the mission was real.
- 15:59Because the truth is, people don't leave high
- 16:01control groups in a blaze of glory. They leave
- 16:03slowly, in pieces, often while still defending
- 16:06the system that's breaking them. This is the
- 16:09part of the story that matters most, because
- 16:11it's the part where freedom begins. Bonnie P
- 16:14.S. was an actress, best known for playing Aunt
- 16:16Beru in Star Wars Attack of the Clones when she
- 16:19joined NXIVM. She wasn't a follower, she was
- 16:22a thinker, a seeker, and eventually, the wife
- 16:25of Mark Vicente. At first, she loved the trainings,
- 16:29she found clarity, purpose, even healing. But
- 16:32over time, she began to sense something sinister
- 16:34behind the vocabulary. People were getting thinner,
- 16:38darker, quieter, and Keith Ranieri was at the
- 16:41center of everything. When Bonnie discovered
- 16:43DOS, long before it became public, she confronted
- 16:46Mark. She told him something was deeply wrong.
- 16:49And then, she left, alone. She packed up, she
- 16:54walked out, and she waited, terrified, not knowing
- 16:58if her husband would follow. Mark Vicente, the
- 17:01documentary filmmaker, was one of NXIVM's most
- 17:03valuable assets. He shot their videos, promoted
- 17:07their teachings, believed in their potential.
- 17:09And when Bonnie left, it shattered him. He said
- 17:13later, quote, My wife saw what I couldn't, and
- 17:16I hated her for it. Not because she was wrong.
- 17:19but because she was right." Mark spent months
- 17:23in anguish. He wrestled with what he knew and
- 17:26what he couldn't believe. He began reviewing
- 17:28old footage, old trainings, and what he saw horrified
- 17:32him. When he realized DOS wasn't just a rumor,
- 17:36but a system of blackmail and abuse run by Keith,
- 17:39he left Nexium too. And then he did something
- 17:42braver. He began to speak. Mark, like Bonnie,
- 17:46would later appear in the HBO documentary The
- 17:49Vow, not as victims, but as people reclaiming
- 17:52their voices. Sarah Edmondson had spent over
- 17:56a decade in NXIVM. She had risen through the
- 17:58ranks, earned her stripes, recruited hundreds.
- 18:01But when she was invited into DOS, she hesitated.
- 18:05She was told it was a secret sisterhood, that
- 18:07it would make her strong, that it required collateral,
- 18:10nude photos and confessions. And she gave it.
- 18:14Then came the branding. a cauterizing pin. The
- 18:17initials of Keith Ranieri burn into her pelvis,
- 18:20then later finding out that also A .M. was visible
- 18:24in the symbol, Allison Mack. That was the moment,
- 18:29the snap, the horror. She told her husband, Anthony
- 18:33Nippy Ames, what had happened, and Nippy, who
- 18:36had also been in NXIVM in the men's group Society
- 18:39of Protectors, or SOP, lost it. Quote, I thought
- 18:44we were building something real, and they were
- 18:47mutilating my wife." Together, Sarah and Nippy
- 18:51decided to leave. But they didn't just walk away.
- 18:55They became whistleblowers. They contacted journalist
- 18:58Frank Parlato. They helped organize the New York
- 19:01Times expose. They provided photos, documents,
- 19:04emails. They put everything on the line. Sarah
- 19:08lost friends. Nippy lost trust in his own instincts.
- 19:11But they kept going. They now co -host the podcast
- 19:15A Little Bit Culty, helping others recognize
- 19:17the same patterns they once missed. Catherine
- 19:20Oxenberg, actress and former royal, entered NXIVM
- 19:23the same way many others did, through a personal
- 19:26growth seminar. She brought her daughter, India
- 19:29Oxenberg, hoping it would help her find direction.
- 19:32But India didn't just attend. She joined. She
- 19:36stayed. Then she became part of DOS. When Catherine
- 19:40found out, she tried to reason. tried to pull
- 19:43her out, tried to reach her, but India refused.
- 19:47Catherine said, quote, she told me I didn't understand
- 19:50that I was the one brainwashed, end quote. So
- 19:55Catherine fought, publicly, loudly, and desperately.
- 19:59She went on TV, spoke to the press, wrote a book
- 20:03titled, Captive, a mother's crusade to save her
- 20:06daughter from a terrifying cold. She would stop
- 20:08at nothing. India finally left after Keith's
- 20:11arrest. The spell broke, and the bond between
- 20:14mother and daughter, once frayed, began to mend.
- 20:18Their story is documented in the Starz series,
- 20:20Seduced. So let's reflect on our series. Seven
- 20:25episodes. Countless lives. One impossible question.
- 20:29How does a group claiming to empower women end
- 20:32up branding them as slaves? The answer isn't
- 20:35simple. It never is. But maybe it starts here.
- 20:39With listening. With asking hard questions. With
- 20:43believing people when they say, something feels
- 20:45off. And maybe it ends here, with truth, with
- 20:53naming the patterns, with calling it what it
- 20:55was. Not empowerment. Enslavement. This series
- 21:01has been a journey through charisma, coercion,
- 21:03complicity, and courage. We've met the manipulators,
- 21:07we've heard the survivors, and we've watched
- 21:09the spell break, slowly, painfully, and gloriously.
- 21:14Today, NXIVM is gone. But the system it used
- 21:17still exists. So stay aware and stay critical.
