- 0:28Speaker 1: day landmark day for the New Orleans Saints, as it
- 0:31Speaker 1: is anytime you introduce a new coach, and Kellen Moore
- 0:34Speaker 1: introduced on Thursday as the nineteenth head coach in New
- 0:38Speaker 1: Orleans Saints history. Press conference there at the Saints facility
- 0:42Speaker 1: in Metori. Missus Benson, Mickey Loomis, and Kellen Moore all spoke.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Kellen Moore had his wife and two of his four
- 0:50Speaker 1: children with him and generally speaking, a good day. It's
- 0:54Speaker 1: what you'd expect. It was a common garden variety introductory
- 0:57Speaker 1: press conference. There were some things we had to get
- 0:59Speaker 1: to miss this. Has Benson started things off by uh
- 1:03Speaker 1: kind of laying out what she and they collectively were
- 1:07Speaker 1: looking for in a new coach.
- 1:08Speaker 2: We wanted a coach that was exceptionally bright, creative, and
- 1:13Speaker 2: most importantly, a tremendous leader. I believe that is exactly
- 1:19Speaker 2: what we have in ellen Moore.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Uh did.
- 1:30Speaker 5: Did I? Did? I hear what I did? I hear
- 1:33Speaker 5: what I think I heard.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I believe that is exactly what we have in Ellen Moore.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm not so I'm not getting it. It sounds
- 1:46Speaker 1: like she called him ellen.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Moore Ellen Moore. Oh oh yeah, she said ellen Moore,
- 1:54Speaker 3: Ellen Moore. She called him Ellen Moore, ellen Moore.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Uh.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Maybe she thought like the k was silent or something
- 2:08Speaker 1: like that, like there's the cheese silent and chopp of tula's. Yeah,
- 2:16Speaker 1: I do that in New Orleans, right, like chafunkta the
- 2:21Speaker 1: tea is silent. Maybe maybe she's gotta get used to it.
- 2:24Speaker 4: A little bit. Ellen Moore called him Ellen.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Ellen.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Hi, we are off to a rip roaring start, Ellen Moore.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I mean, and there ain't no hiding it. She didn't
- 2:49Speaker 4: trip over a what I mean? She does flat called him.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Ellen ellen Moore.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Uh, oh my god.
- 2:58Speaker 4: But she got it right later in fairness, you got
- 3:01Speaker 4: it right, Kellen. She did call him, Kellen, play it again,
- 3:11Speaker 4: Ellen Moore, Okay, all right, all right, we've got something
- 3:17Speaker 4: to talk about.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I have a feeling you're gonna hear plenty of that
- 3:20Speaker 1: over the next for as long as they allow me
- 3:22Speaker 1: to do this radio show years. But Mickey Loomis went
- 3:28Speaker 1: up as well and effectively talked about this coaching search
- 3:34Speaker 1: in total, and he thanked everybody. But basically the reason
- 3:38Speaker 1: that it dragged on as long that it did.
- 3:41Speaker 4: As mentioned, this was a comprehensive process.
- 3:43Speaker 2: It took longer than we anticipated simply because the Eagles
- 3:49Speaker 2: kept winning.
- 3:51Speaker 4: And that delayed our opportunity to make an informed decision.
- 3:54Speaker 2: We appreciate their patience and cooperation with us during the process.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Uh one of them. So then then Kellen Moore did
- 4:03Speaker 1: take to the podium, and I thought he was impressive.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Uh he's young guy, lots of energy and kind of
- 4:13Speaker 1: gave off college coach program builder vibes. Is maybe the
- 4:23Speaker 1: best way I could say it. But I think for
- 4:27Speaker 1: for I think for most everybody, there's two primary questions
- 4:34Speaker 1: we all know that Kellen Moore has to address first
- 4:37Speaker 1: and foremost, and it's not going to be a singular decision.
- 4:40Speaker 1: It'll be more with Mickey Loomis in the front office
- 4:42Speaker 1: and everything, but one one is Derek Carr and the
- 4:47Speaker 1: other is the salary cap and quite honestly, those do
- 4:51Speaker 1: work in tandem. First, here was Kellen Moore when he
- 4:55Speaker 1: was asked point blank the I mean the question. I'll
- 4:58Speaker 1: play the answer here, but the question point blank was
- 5:02Speaker 1: do you view Derek Carr as the week one starter
- 5:06Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five? Like there's no dancing around the
- 5:10Speaker 1: like an ambiguous question, was a very direct question. Here
- 5:13Speaker 1: was the answer.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I've viewed as Derek Carr's a tremendous starting quarterback in
- 5:16Speaker 5: this league. We're fortunate to have him, and we're excited
- 5:19Speaker 5: to go through this process, you know, as we built
- 5:21Speaker 5: this roster together again. I'm meeting these guys for the
- 5:24Speaker 5: first time the last few days. We're excited to meet
- 5:26Speaker 5: more of them and this will be a lot of fun.
- 5:28Speaker 1: So he did not say, yes, Derek Carr is going
- 5:33Speaker 1: to be the Week one starter. He also didn't say
- 5:36Speaker 1: he won't be the Week one starter. That was a
- 5:38Speaker 1: double negative. But I think you understand the point. He
- 5:41Speaker 1: was non committal there with Derek Carr, so you could
- 5:44Speaker 1: read it one way or another.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Now.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Earlier in the press conference, he did speak about Derek
- 5:49Speaker 1: Carr as a player somebod who knows well.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Derek's a tremendous quarterback in this league. I've had so
- 5:54Speaker 5: much respect for him, the journey that he's been on.
- 5:57Speaker 5: He's a starter in this league. He's a premier player
- 5:59Speaker 5: in this league. He's had a great journey obviously, going
- 6:02Speaker 5: from Fresno State to the Raiders and now here. You know,
- 6:06Speaker 5: really excited to team up with him and go through
- 6:08Speaker 5: this process. And so just like any player on this roster,
- 6:12Speaker 5: you know, I just got here a few days ago,
- 6:13Speaker 5: and I'm excited to go through this journey with all
- 6:14Speaker 5: of them.
- 6:16Speaker 4: He dropped a few.
- 6:17Speaker 1: This league's there, I am happy to report. However, we
- 6:23Speaker 1: did in fact get this.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Players in our league.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Hmm, mus we got in our league. I mean, the
- 6:33Speaker 1: guy's adapting to the culture already already. I mean, he
- 6:36Speaker 1: just let being called Ellen roll right off his back
- 6:39Speaker 1: and jumped right into our league. You give me a
- 6:43Speaker 1: I think this, and look, oh look, and I think this.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Now we're cooking with Greece. Okay, we're going right back
- 6:54Speaker 1: to the Peyton era. So Derek Carr. One part of this.
- 7:00Speaker 1: The salary cap is the other part of this. And
- 7:03Speaker 1: here's what Kellen Moore said, and look, in fairness, he
- 7:05Speaker 1: didn't really shy away from this conversation, which I guess
- 7:09Speaker 1: is sort of unavoidable.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Certainly, the opportunity to go through the interview process allows
- 7:13Speaker 5: us to have those conversations and quickly. Again, it's evident
- 7:16Speaker 5: that the leadership here is tremendous. They're best in the
- 7:19Speaker 5: business from a business side of this operation, and we
- 7:22Speaker 5: feel very comfortable where we're going.
- 7:24Speaker 1: We feel comfortable where we're going. But he didn't give
- 7:26Speaker 1: an answer, and I know that as we talk about
- 7:31Speaker 1: the cap in particular with Derek Carr, the only way
- 7:37Speaker 1: that you're going to get real savings is a post
- 7:38Speaker 1: June first designation, right, which would give you about a
- 7:41Speaker 1: thirty million dollar cap savings. But that doesn't allow you
- 7:47Speaker 1: that opportunity then to spend that money in free agency
- 7:50Speaker 1: when the league year begins. So it's really a question
- 7:55Speaker 1: of do you want to make that move now and
- 7:59Speaker 1: not really have any cap savings, or do you want
- 8:04Speaker 1: to wait a year.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Let me rephrase, you'll have cap savings.
- 8:08Speaker 1: It's just not gonna be reflected the point where you
- 8:10Speaker 1: could spend it in free agency this year, or do
- 8:13Speaker 1: you want to roll with Derek Carr another year, see
- 8:16Speaker 1: what that may may be like, and then you make
- 8:19Speaker 1: your decision moving forward. You all know where I stand
- 8:21Speaker 1: on it. But I also think one of the other
- 8:28Speaker 1: things that was very impressive about Kellen Moore Q play
- 8:31Speaker 1: nine please muse and this is I think some understanding
- 8:36Speaker 1: for a guy who's from Washington State, who played collegiately
- 8:40Speaker 1: at Boise State, and now who has coached around the
- 8:43Speaker 1: NFL in Dallas, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, who really has
- 8:47Speaker 1: no ties, recognition, awareness of New Orleans of the city.
- 8:53Speaker 1: He did talk about what the team, what the Saints mean,
- 8:58Speaker 1: not only do the city but to the eight in
- 9:00Speaker 1: the region, and I thought this is I thought there
- 9:04Speaker 1: was a very strong amount of awareness in this answer.
- 9:08Speaker 5: It's very quickly evident this is a tremendous city. The
- 9:12Speaker 5: hospitality and the environment that they provided for the Super
- 9:15Speaker 5: Bowl was really special. You quickly saw what makes this
- 9:18Speaker 5: place an amazing city. And you know, as we've gone
- 9:21Speaker 5: through this process, it just becomes more and more evident.
- 9:23Speaker 5: We truly can't wait for this to become home.
- 9:26Speaker 1: He said the right things, and I think there's part
- 9:31Speaker 1: of that. Kellen Moore was at the Pelicans game with
- 9:35Speaker 1: his family, got a nice introduction there, a nice cheer.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I think there is a part of that. It's part
- 9:41Speaker 1: and parcel with being the Saints head coach. When you
- 9:44Speaker 1: embrace the city, and it's not just the Saints head coach,
- 9:46Speaker 1: it's really anything in Louisiana, whether you're a coach or
- 9:49Speaker 1: a player. We talk about it all the time. You
- 9:53Speaker 1: wrap your arms around the place and the culture, it'll
- 9:55Speaker 1: give you a big bear hug back and you'll never
- 9:57Speaker 1: want to leave. That's that's why Sean hay and very
- 10:00Speaker 1: seamlessly for the Super Bowl was interwoven into some of
- 10:05Speaker 1: the pregame Nola Strong festivities, right, I mean it was.
- 10:09Speaker 1: It was Sean Payton next to Gaile Benson in the
- 10:13Speaker 1: quarter with the Lady Gaga Nola Strong performance. Drew Brees
- 10:20Speaker 1: forever has talked about about that and about making this
- 10:23Speaker 1: home and everything that the city and the franchise means
- 10:27Speaker 1: of the city and the city of the region and everything.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So when you have that awareness, it's gonna endear you
- 10:33Speaker 1: to the people. It doesn't mean you're gonna win games.
- 10:35Speaker 1: There are people who have endeared themselves here and it
- 10:37Speaker 1: didn't work out as a coach or player either way.
- 10:39Speaker 1: But that is a very significant part of being the
- 10:43Speaker 1: Saints head coach. That isn't necessarily true elsewhere, Like that's
- 10:47Speaker 1: not really the case with the Pelicans. They haven't set
- 10:49Speaker 1: a hook culturally in South Louisiana yet. I'm quite certain
- 10:53Speaker 1: if you got to Los Angeles, Jim Harbaugh doesn't need
- 10:56Speaker 1: to be ingratiating himself to the people of Los Angeles
- 11:00Speaker 1: because the Chargers probably people of Los Angeles probably even
- 11:02Speaker 1: know the Chargers are there by and large. It's just
- 11:05Speaker 1: different here. So, uh, Kellen Moore introduced and did address
- 11:10Speaker 1: the first you know two things, primarily that he's gonna
- 11:12Speaker 1: have to worry about cap quarterback and they'll continue evolves,
- 11:16Speaker 1: move forward, and we'll work on missus Benson getting getting
- 11:20Speaker 1: his name right.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Ellen Moore
