- 0:23The Shift. Hey, you guys, welcome to
- 0:29episode 157 of the Shift podcast.
- 0:33I'm titling this one. Push the hard button.
- 0:37I wanted to just do a hodgepodge episode today.
- 0:42I have lots of thoughts that I've been thinking about as I've
- 0:46been thinking about you guys when I go on my morning walks
- 0:49and I kind of just like jot them down in my notes on my phone.
- 0:53I don't know how many of you guys do that, but these are the
- 0:56things that I put down over the last week as I've gone on my
- 1:00walks. And so I know hodgepodge is like
- 1:03dating myself and like an old person maybe word, but I would
- 1:08just went to lunch with a bunch of girlfriends and we were
- 1:10talking about how we use some of these outdated words or words
- 1:14that we make up. And that's that's just what came
- 1:16up for me right now. But I felt like usually I like
- 1:21to have a theme for my podcast episode or I like to like just
- 1:27jot down notes of themes of what I'm going to be talking about.
- 1:30But today I just have a little bit of everything.
- 1:32And I kind of felt like one person needs to hear this.
- 1:37I felt like this is maybe something that a lot of people
- 1:40don't talk about. And I felt like my content on my
- 1:45podcast episode this week needs to be a little bit of all of
- 1:47these things for some reason, just like my gut and my
- 1:50intuition is telling me someone needs to hear that.
- 1:52So I hope a piece of what I say today is helpful for you and
- 1:57helps you move forward. I want you guys to know that
- 1:59this podcast is for you to be able to tap into whenever you
- 2:04need it. When you're feeling high
- 2:07emotions, you're feeling down, or you want to get a little bit
- 2:10of motivation. I hope that these episodes are
- 2:13helpful for you to tap into a piece of feeling empowered
- 2:18because that's really what they are about.
- 2:21And reach out to me, please. If you listen to this and you'd
- 2:24like to hear more about certain topics, I am going to be giving
- 2:27you a lot more of my thoughts. So I'm titling this push the
- 2:31hard button and forgive me as well.
- 2:32I have been sick the last couple days, so I'm a little stuffed
- 2:35up, but we're going to get through this.
- 2:38I don't know if you guys remember the gosh, I think it
- 2:43was a Staples commercial where you would, they'd be like here,
- 2:46push the easy button and there'd be this big red button and you'd
- 2:49push the easy button and everything would be organized or
- 2:53taken care of. And I've been thinking about
- 2:55that a lot lately. And I thought about that
- 2:57commercial a lot when my kids were really little is like, I
- 2:59just want to push the easy button and dinner to be made or
- 3:05the laundry to be done or the grocery shopping to be done.
- 3:09And I do believe that right now we are living in a time where
- 3:12people just want things to be easier, especially that we have
- 3:16chat and we can Google anything and we can find answers right
- 3:22away. I think we just live in a time
- 3:24where we want things to be easy. And I've been thinking about
- 3:28this a lot lately because I really believe growth, and you
- 3:35guys know this too, that growth happens in the hard moments.
- 3:38And I really believe the more opportunity we give ourselves to
- 3:41do the hard thing, the more we're going to grow in our
- 3:45capability and our capacity and in our confidence levels.
- 3:49And I just think it's our brains natural way of saying, hey, I
- 3:54want to, I want to do it easy. I, I, I don't want to do the
- 3:57hard thing And I, I, I hoped at what I want with this episode is
- 4:04to invite you to do the hard to be the person who steps up as a
- 4:13leader and asks for the heart and picks the hard route.
- 4:17Because this is where growth is going to happen.
- 4:19And if you can do one thing every day that feels
- 4:23uncomfortable or that doesn't feel like the easy route or that
- 4:26doesn't feel like you're pulling back, but where you have to lean
- 4:29in a little bit and put in, put on your big curl panties, like
- 4:34that's where the growth is going to happen.
- 4:36So I, I wanted to make an invite as you guys listen to this
- 4:40podcast episode to invite you to do the hard thing to the be the
- 4:44person who steps up and is the leader in the hard moments to
- 4:49choose the hard route. And I know this is something
- 4:52that I have been thinking about lately and something that I
- 4:56really instill in my kids is that it's, it's easy to do it
- 5:01like everybody else and it's easy to take the easy route.
- 5:04But I was having this conversation with my oldest the
- 5:08other day and we were just talking about integrity, like
- 5:12having integrity with yourself. When you say you're going to do
- 5:15something and then following through with it, that's
- 5:17integrity. Or when you tell someone that
- 5:19you're going to do something and you follow through with it,
- 5:21that's integrity. And so I was, I was really
- 5:25sharing with him to be an entrepreneur it, it takes, it
- 5:29does take a lot of risk and doing hard things is risky too.
- 5:34But I told him, what's what's even?
- 5:38We think risk is hard, but what's even harder than risk is
- 5:42regret. And I said regret is much harder
- 5:45to live with than just taking the risk.
- 5:48And so I hope that you get something out of this episode
- 5:52and you do the hard thing. And when you have the choice on
- 5:57a daily basis to sit back and relax and just watch TV, that
- 6:01you decide to do the hard thing or the uncomfortable thing.
- 6:03You get up, you go to the gym, you go on that run, you do that
- 6:06thing that you said that you were going to do.
- 6:09Because every little hard moment adds up to you really showing
- 6:14yourself and being in integrity with yourself and then growing
- 6:18your level of your standard and your capacity.
- 6:21And for me, this is super important because I want to be
- 6:24the person who can help other people do that too.
- 6:27And so I've created a lot of hard moments in my, in my life.
- 6:31And I was also thinking about, you know, being a flight nurse
- 6:35for seven years, that was extremely hard, but it gave me
- 6:38the most highest level of confidence.
- 6:40And I was thinking about why. And I'm going to share with you
- 6:43a couple reasons why in just a second.
- 6:44But it's because day in and day out, I did a really hard thing.
- 6:48I had lots of hard moments, made a lot of hard decisions.
- 6:52And with each time I did that, I grew my standard and my level of
- 6:56leveling up in who I was. And it gave me so much
- 6:59confidence in every aspect of my life.
- 7:01And I think a lot of confidence for me to go out there and take
- 7:04the risk of being an entrepreneur and retiring
- 7:06completely from nursing. I want to share with you guys.
- 7:10I was also telling my good friends as I, I went to lunch
- 7:13today with them. I feel like my, my life has been
- 7:17a little bit like a sad country song.
- 7:19You know, my died, my dog died last week.
- 7:22I we had to make the choice to put him down.
- 7:24And I was telling the shift group this past week that I went
- 7:29on my morning walk and there was this black dog and he doesn't
- 7:32look anything like my black dog, but I see him every morning.
- 7:35And I just broke down in tears and I just expressed like how
- 7:39sad I was and I loved my dog. I just didn't realize that I was
- 7:44attached to him as much as I was until we had to make the
- 7:47decision to put him down. And I just, I had I think 4
- 7:51coaching calls the next day and I cancelled them all because I
- 7:54was just like, I am extremely sad right now.
- 7:58And I just really let myself go to that emotion.
- 8:02I really let myself experience it.
- 8:05I really just gave myself what I needed in that moment and I'm so
- 8:12proud of that because now this week, I still am really sad and
- 8:15I have lots of moments of really, really missing him.
- 8:18But I know that I didn't push it down.
- 8:21And because I didn't push it down, I know that I really let
- 8:23myself process through that emotion.
- 8:26I know what sadness feels like for me and I know how to let
- 8:32myself allow it when I need it. And so I think that's really
- 8:36part of doing hard things too, is allowing yourself to
- 8:38experience really hard emotions and, and being willing to let
- 8:42them process through for however long that they need to be there.
- 8:45But what brought this up for me is I have a lot of life
- 8:48circumstances going on. I as as do all of you guys, the
- 8:53day after my twins had a big swim meet.
- 8:57And so we're really involved in their senior year.
- 9:00And then my son of two years came back early last Friday from
- 9:05a mission for medical reasons. And so I was telling my coach
- 9:09last week, there's a lot of things going on and I don't feel
- 9:13overwhelmed. And I told her my, my life.
- 9:19I, I think a lot of people would be thinking my life is happening
- 9:22to me, but I'm really thinking I'm happening to my life.
- 9:26And a couple things that I want to share with you because I know
- 9:29a lot of you guys might be struggling or there might be
- 9:31some big circumstances going on for you.
- 9:34And I hope that you can tap into the power of this podcast.
- 9:37And some of my thoughts is my predominant thought was I am
- 9:42built for this. I am the perfect person to be
- 9:46navigating this moment, not from a place of hustle, but from so
- 9:52much love and compassion for me to just like keep going and love
- 9:58that I get to experience all of these emotions right now.
- 10:02And one thing that I think has been so powerful and helping me
- 10:07through a lot of these things that went on in the past week is
- 10:12my coach, actually, Stacey Vaman, my business coach, has
- 10:15this thought. I am an asset.
- 10:17And I think that a lot. And I also think I'm an
- 10:20important part of my team. And so because I'm an important
- 10:23part of my team, I need to take care of myself.
- 10:25And so that day that my dog died and the next day I cancelled all
- 10:28my calls. And I'm not afraid to say
- 10:31because I'm an important part of my team, what do I need in this
- 10:33moment? Who do I need to ask for help?
- 10:37Maybe I need to give myself a little grace.
- 10:39Maybe I need to take a little nap.
- 10:40Maybe I need to take a walk. Maybe I need to take the day
- 10:43off, Whatever it is, because I'm an important part of my team.
- 10:47I need to ask myself what I need.
- 10:49And I need to be able to ask other people if I need something
- 10:52from them too. And so I think that's really
- 10:54important. And that's an added step that we
- 10:57forget to do is really asking for what we need because we are
- 11:01an asset and we are a leader or a very important part of the
- 11:04team. I am the leader of my family.
- 11:07I'm the leader of my kids. And just remembering that like I
- 11:12need to take care of myself and asking for what I need.
- 11:16Something that I always compare it to is like, and this is what
- 11:19I coach. This too is pro athletes.
- 11:21Like they take care of themselves because they're an
- 11:23asset to the team. They need to as much as they
- 11:26play hard on the days that they have to game day, they have to
- 11:28train really hard, they have to recover really hard and they
- 11:31have to have a really good diet and physical health.
- 11:35And so we have to remember because we are leaders of our
- 11:37teams, of our families, of our units, of our jobs, of our kids,
- 11:41of whatever it is, we have to take care of ourselves.
- 11:45And just asking, you know, myself, like, what do I need in
- 11:48this moment? I think is really helpful.
- 11:50And from moment to moment, what do I need?
- 11:52Another example that I wanted to give you that I felt like was so
- 11:55powerful, especially as a flight nurse is I worked in a near in a
- 12:02nearby city and also flew into the city I lived in.
- 12:05And I grew up in this community my whole life.
- 12:08So I knew a lot of the people in EMS and in the hospital systems.
- 12:11But sometimes we would land and the cruise would be like, oh,
- 12:16hey, I'm so glad it's you, Janessa.
- 12:18And I'm so glad it's so and so whoever my partner was in the
- 12:20team. And sometimes I would be like, I
- 12:22don't even know this person. I can't remember their name, you
- 12:25know, not recognize them. And I'd be taken back.
- 12:28And, and I thought about that a lot, a lot in moments as, as
- 12:33more people got to know me and, and, and I got to know them, I,
- 12:37I started to think like, what was I thinking that had them
- 12:42thinking that? Not in a way that I don't think
- 12:44we can at all control the way people think about us, but I was
- 12:47thinking, I really believe whatever I believe about myself,
- 12:51it's portrayed in my actions. It's portrayed in my connection.
- 12:55It's portrayed in every moment that I have with someone.
- 12:58And so I asked myself that a lot.
- 13:01And the predominant thoughts that I thought as a flight nurse
- 13:05was I have got you. I'm the perfect person for this
- 13:10job. This is what I do.
- 13:12There is no one in this moment in time who can do this better
- 13:17than me because my crew and my team are here.
- 13:20We are the people here. I am glad it's me and I've
- 13:24realized that I took a lot of those thoughts as I was a flight
- 13:27nurse into my personal life. I thought that many times last
- 13:30week. You know, when my husband works
- 13:32a job or predominantly he's gone Monday through Friday and he
- 13:35goes out of state to work and then he comes back on the
- 13:37weekends or Friday. And I've actually thought that a
- 13:41lot since he progressed to doing that.
- 13:42I've thought those thoughts a lot.
- 13:43Like, what better person than me to be able to be there for my
- 13:47family right now? To be able to have a business
- 13:50where I can be home, be there for my kids, have the time,
- 13:54freedom to go to all of their events, take care of them and
- 13:56their appointments, make the decision to put the dog down and
- 14:02have the support of my kids. Like, I'm glad it's me.
- 14:05I'm glad I'm the one that can handle it.
- 14:07I'm the perfect person. I have got my team and if you
- 14:12aren't predominantly believing these thoughts as life and
- 14:14circumstances is happening to you, I want to invite you to
- 14:17think about why. And what do you need to be
- 14:22believing about yourself to put yourself back into that?
- 14:25So much power that life isn't happening to you.
- 14:28You are happening to life. You have so much power and
- 14:32control over how you were doing things and how you were thinking
- 14:35and what perfect person but you to be the one to be doing it.
- 14:39No one better than you can be making those decisions and be
- 14:42that person to be going through that in that moment.
- 14:45I'm grateful for all these experiences.
- 14:47I'm grateful to be experiencing big emotions, sad emotions,
- 14:51joyful emotions, high emotions. Because I know with every
- 14:55emotion that I experience, I am now going to be able to help you
- 14:58guys and my clients through them with a better understanding of
- 15:03exactly how you feel with. I know I confidently I can help
- 15:08you through it because I've been through it and I know how to
- 15:11experience it and I know how to coach you through it.
- 15:15And I think that when I experience it first hand, then
- 15:18I'm able to go out there and help people with equally hard
- 15:21things. And I believe that for you guys
- 15:23too, The more we do the hard things, the more we experience
- 15:27it, the more capability we're going to be able to have to help
- 15:30other people through this. And, and I want to to offer you
- 15:37guys a thought because I think sometimes we forget the jobs
- 15:41that we pick or the circumstances that were in our
- 15:45choice in them. And I, I have to tell a lot of
- 15:48like my critical care clients, a lot who are nurses who work
- 15:52really hard jobs or people who just work really hard jobs is
- 15:55that you chose this, you chose to work this type of job.
- 15:59So you have to remember to tell yourself, I want this and this
- 16:02is what I do. And I also another thought that
- 16:06I carry with me all the time is I am a leader.
- 16:08And I don't have to have the badge or the title.
- 16:13It's just remembering like being a leader is going to follow you
- 16:17throughout your whole life. And I think I remember as a
- 16:20young kid, people would be like, hey, Janessa, what do you think?
- 16:23And that was like the sparks of being a leader, you know, and,
- 16:26and remembering I am a leader. So I want this.
- 16:28This is what I do. I am a leader.
- 16:31The last thing that I want to leave you guys with is I think
- 16:34in grade school we are taught the wrong thing.
- 16:37We're taught you got to be nice to so and so because it's going
- 16:40to hurt their feelings. And I just really believe that
- 16:45we are responsible for our own feelings.
- 16:48So I really teach my kids, it's no one else's responsibility to
- 16:52make you feel better but you. And what that means is we cannot
- 16:58rely on other people or be hurt by what other people are telling
- 17:01us they're doing or not doing for us.
- 17:03It's our responsibility to take care of ourselves and, and, and
- 17:08our responsibility to feel better and feel our own
- 17:12feelings. And I was telling someone else
- 17:14this recently and they're like, well, doesn't that make, does
- 17:19that make like them not care about other people's feelings?
- 17:22And I'm like, actually, it's the opposite.
- 17:24They're so kind. And I realized they're so kind
- 17:28because when you can learn to take care of your own feelings
- 17:31and be responsible for that, then you have the energy to go
- 17:36out there and help other people more.
- 17:39And it's like the opposite. The more you take responsibility
- 17:42for, hey, I, I'm going to make myself feel better.
- 17:46I am the asset to the team. I need to take responsibility
- 17:50for what I need in this moment and how I can feel better and
- 17:53process my own emotions. Then when you can do that, then
- 17:57you have so much energy to give to other people and it creates
- 18:00someone who is so kind. And so I just want to offer you
- 18:08that when you are trying to please other people, people
- 18:15please other people, or navigate what you're saying or what
- 18:18you're doing to make someone feel a certain way or to control
- 18:21the way that they feel about you.
- 18:23That is trying to control other people's feelings for you.
- 18:26And that is impossible to do. The only person that hurts is
- 18:30you. And then that has you being
- 18:32someone totally different than who you are.
- 18:35And so I want to offer you, take responsibility for your
- 18:39feelings. Get what go out there and get
- 18:41what you need, what you need in the moment.
- 18:44Be confident in who you are. And if someone quote, UN quote,
- 18:51hurt your feelings or you are sad or disappointed because
- 18:56someone said something to you, just allow yourself to feel that
- 18:59motion, but give yourself empowerment back and realize
- 19:06like you are responsible for for your own feelings.
- 19:11And that might mean, hey, maybe today I'm just going to feel a
- 19:14little sad. Maybe today I'm going to just
- 19:17feel a little disappointment. I'm going to allow myself to
- 19:19feel it. I'm not going to resist it.
- 19:22I'm going to just process it through.
- 19:26When you can do that, when you can be truer, kinder to
- 19:29yourself, that's where your confidence will grow.
- 19:31That's where your capacity will grow.
- 19:33This is doing the hard thing. And then when you'll realize,
- 19:38just like I did this week, like I am so proud of myself for
- 19:46allowing myself to experience the sadness, to have the
- 19:53confidence and empowerment, to feel like life isn't happening
- 19:57to me, but I'm happening to my life and I love every minute of
- 20:01it. I love the sadness, I love the
- 20:03joy. I love all of it because it is
- 20:06increasing my capability to do the hard.
