- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome in jazz A. I'm on Tainanie Stevens, Katy Shadwick
- 0:20Speaker 1: in for us and for Brian Sexton. John osers with
- 0:23Speaker 1: me as well to continue your training camp coverage of
- 0:26Speaker 1: Jaguars finally playing a preseason game last week and they're
- 0:28Speaker 1: working towards their second one against the Saints this weekend.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Let's start out with some of our big things brought
- 0:33Speaker 2: to you by g e H.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Government Employees Health Association benefits for federal employees and retirees.
- 0:39Speaker 1: So we're gonna start out with mental Obviously, there were
- 0:42Speaker 1: a lot of mental mistakes in their first preseason matchup
- 0:44Speaker 1: against the Steelers, and that's something Liam Cohen really focused
- 0:47Speaker 1: on practice at London.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Alignment assignment, getting our cleats in the ground when.
- 0:55Speaker 4: We have a call.
- 0:58Speaker 3: On both sides of the ball, you know, fundamentals. We
- 1:01Speaker 3: did a forty play alignment assignment period of just getting
- 1:07Speaker 3: the call, getting our cleats in the ground, making loud
- 1:10Speaker 3: guttural communication, getting the calls in quickly. That was what
- 1:16Speaker 3: we were really kind of focusing on from an emphasis standpoint. Obviously,
- 1:20Speaker 3: some of these guys are gonna be a little bit soler.
- 1:21Speaker 3: That played a lot of snaps in the game, so
- 1:24Speaker 3: we were trying to really hone in on the mind
- 1:28Speaker 3: got conditioning out of it kind of as well. So
- 1:31Speaker 3: that was kind of the thought of today as your
- 1:34Speaker 3: head coach.
- 1:35Speaker 1: At practice on Monday got at that time, z Ap.
- 1:38Speaker 1: They went really mentally focused. They weren't they didn't have
- 1:41Speaker 1: all their pads on Monday. They were really trying to get,
- 1:43Speaker 1: you know, some of the stuff that you can avoid
- 1:45Speaker 1: out of the way and just alignments issues like that.
- 1:48Speaker 1: That was mainly the focus for the Monday.
- 1:49Speaker 5: It was.
- 1:50Speaker 6: And you know, I'll use emojis a lot when I
- 1:52Speaker 6: text people, John, I know it certainly does.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Kyle, you probably do too. You never want to.
- 1:56Speaker 4: See this struggle on the field on.
- 1:59Speaker 6: Defil So it felt like there was a lot of
- 2:01Speaker 6: what's going on on the field on defense, and that
- 2:04Speaker 6: was the whole focus on money. All right, take the
- 2:07Speaker 6: pads off, let's slow things down a little bit, and
- 2:10Speaker 6: you gotta nip that in the bud right now, because
- 2:12Speaker 6: that can fester and grow into miscommunication once the regular
- 2:15Speaker 6: season gets here. John, and I think it was really
- 2:18Speaker 6: smart for Liam Cohen to just settle it down a
- 2:20Speaker 6: little bit and get refocused.
- 2:21Speaker 7: Yeah, I thought he had a little bit of a
- 2:23Speaker 7: tone on Monday of Okay, we can get lined up.
- 2:26Speaker 7: We're gonna line up, and we're gonna line up again.
- 2:28Speaker 7: We're gonna line up again until you guys get it right.
- 2:31Speaker 7: And that may be a little extreme, but I thought
- 2:33Speaker 7: it had a feel of that.
- 2:35Speaker 4: You know.
- 2:35Speaker 7: The the cleats in the ground was something that Anthony
- 2:39Speaker 7: Campanelli talked about as well. If it didn't happen, then
- 2:44Speaker 7: they're gonna make darn sure it does happen. So I
- 2:48Speaker 7: thought it was interesting that, you know, I really like
- 2:51Speaker 7: how Liam Cohen is approaching his availability with the media,
- 2:55Speaker 7: meaning he's very transparent. I think it shows you he's
- 2:59Speaker 7: probably that way with the players, and if he sees
- 3:02Speaker 7: something needs to be addressed, he's going to address it.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Forgett to say absolutely, it's refreshing. I love it.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Second big thing physical now, just because they were more
- 3:10Speaker 1: mentally focused on Monday, on Tuesday, they went back to
- 3:12Speaker 1: physicality and probably one of the most physical practices we've
- 3:15Speaker 1: seen so far in training him getting after it.
- 3:17Speaker 2: We got our first fistfight a little bit as well.
- 3:19Speaker 1: But coach camp talked also yesterday about not wasting their
- 3:23Speaker 1: time and utilizing it.
- 3:25Speaker 8: The beautiful part of football is you always got to
- 3:28Speaker 8: understand times the enemy. You know, time is the enemy.
- 3:30Speaker 8: That's what you're working again, So every walk through, every meeting,
- 3:33Speaker 8: if you're not paying attention, if you're not dialed in
- 3:35Speaker 8: on all your reps, you know, your opportunities out there,
- 3:38Speaker 8: however many they may be, You've got to make them count,
- 3:41Speaker 8: you know. And I know that's like cliche. Everybody says, oh,
- 3:43Speaker 8: don't count the reps, make the reps count, but like
- 3:45Speaker 8: there's not enough time to not be locked into what
- 3:49Speaker 8: you're doing. So if you don't do that, you know,
- 3:51Speaker 8: sometimes you're learning on the fly. And I think we'll
- 3:55Speaker 8: learn from that last outing out there on the field.
- 3:58Speaker 1: John, I know a lot of us panicking maybe is
- 4:01Speaker 1: a strong way of saying it. They're worried about what
- 4:03Speaker 1: they saw on defense in that preseason game. We talked
- 4:05Speaker 1: a little bit about that earlier this week, but also
- 4:07Speaker 1: just taking advantage and utilizing the opportunity. They have a
- 4:10Speaker 1: camp to fix this right away and get back on track.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 7: Look, I mean I've been down playing a little bit,
- 4:15Speaker 7: uh the first series the other night, cause it was
- 4:18Speaker 7: one preseason game and it was in the in the
- 4:21Speaker 7: first preseason game and it was ten plays. But if
- 4:24Speaker 7: it's another preseason game and another preseason game at some point,
- 4:30Speaker 7: you can't say that it's just preseason if it if
- 4:32Speaker 7: it keeps happening. So I think there is some urgency.
- 4:35Speaker 7: There's a reason to panic about it. But from a
- 4:37Speaker 7: coaching standpoint, the reason you have preseason games is so
- 4:40Speaker 7: you can look at him and say, Okay, what it
- 4:41Speaker 7: needs to get fixed, Well, you know, get the cleats
- 4:44Speaker 7: in the ground, let's get going, Let's make sure they
- 4:46Speaker 7: understand the urgency of this, and uh.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Let's move on and get that fixed.
- 4:49Speaker 7: So I that's been the tone, and I think both
- 4:52Speaker 7: of these guys campany lanco and have uh expressed that.
- 4:55Speaker 7: I I'd be surprised if there's a whole lot of
- 4:58Speaker 7: this on Sunday.
- 5:00Speaker 5: All right, it's been a focus all week John, And yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 5: he's right.
- 5:03Speaker 6: Though the clock is ticking, there's only two more preseason
- 5:05Speaker 6: games left, most likely, and just a guess here, the
- 5:08Speaker 6: starters might not play in the last one since they
- 5:11Speaker 6: have the practice against the Dolphins, so time is limited,
- 5:14Speaker 6: especially for the guys they feel like are frontline starting
- 5:17Speaker 6: players to get their act together and be physical and
- 5:22Speaker 6: put good reps on tape. So it's coming quick week
- 5:25Speaker 6: ones right around the corner, sure is.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Let's do our final big thing, which is depth. Tyson Campbell, cornerback,
- 5:30Speaker 1: has not practiced. He did not practice on Monday, did
- 5:32Speaker 1: not practice on Tuesday. He's dealing with an injury that
- 5:35Speaker 1: hasn't been disclosed at this point.
- 5:37Speaker 2: But how concerned are you about the secondary at this point?
- 5:39Speaker 4: JP?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Obviously Montereg Brown is going to miss the rest of
- 5:42Speaker 1: training camp he has an injury. At Travis Hunter obviously
- 5:45Speaker 1: plays on both sides of the ball. We haven't seen
- 5:46Speaker 1: him play every single down on defense, so is that
- 5:49Speaker 1: something we could see more of him on defense now
- 5:51Speaker 1: because of the need.
- 5:52Speaker 6: It seems like that Caleb Bransaw too has been out
- 5:55Speaker 6: a little bit as well, the rookie that they liked
- 5:57Speaker 6: they were going to count on a little bit at
- 5:59Speaker 6: some point on the in the secondary.
- 6:00Speaker 5: But yeah, earlier in the week we.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Saw Travis Hunter play all defense. That was back on Tuesday,
- 6:06Speaker 6: So is that an everyday occurrence moving ahead?
- 6:10Speaker 5: Don't know about that.
- 6:11Speaker 6: Maybe it just worked out for Travis Hunter on that day,
- 6:14Speaker 6: but maybe he does I don't know.
- 6:16Speaker 5: If it'll, that's the question. John. I don't know if he'll.
- 6:18Speaker 6: Just what they're doing with Travis, because what they're doing
- 6:21Speaker 6: with Travis Hunter is its own thing no matter what
- 6:25Speaker 6: happens on either side of the ball at those positions.
- 6:27Speaker 6: I think they want to stay on track with Travis
- 6:29Speaker 6: as much as they can.
- 6:29Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't think he drafted Travis Hunter with the
- 6:32Speaker 7: idea that you were going to have an injury in
- 6:35Speaker 7: camp dictate his playing time because with Travis you're not
- 6:38Speaker 7: only worried about like what's happening today and in week one.
- 6:42Speaker 7: You want him to develop over the course of his
- 6:44Speaker 7: career or the short term. As far as depth your debt,
- 6:50Speaker 7: I mean, you are deep until you're not deep. Well,
- 6:53Speaker 7: I think they started out deep and now that they
- 6:55Speaker 7: have two guys out, they're not as deep.
- 6:58Speaker 4: So that's basic math.
- 7:00Speaker 7: But I do think you want to make sure Tyson
- 7:05Speaker 7: whatever is going on now doesn't linger, because he's had
- 7:08Speaker 7: linger stuff the last two years.
- 7:09Speaker 4: You don't want that.
- 7:11Speaker 7: I think they're okay for now in the secondary because
- 7:13Speaker 7: of Travis Hunter. But if there's one more to frontline
- 7:17Speaker 7: guy than their shallow.
- 7:20Speaker 2: They are pluses and minuses. We appreciate the math.
- 7:23Speaker 1: John, stay with this year on jags Am, We're gonna
- 7:25Speaker 1: go over some names you need to know from training
- 7:27Speaker 1: camp this week. Welcome back to jag z Am today,
- 7:34Speaker 1: presents to you by Jet Home Loans, also brought to
- 7:36Speaker 1: you by Field's Auto Groups he Fields First, Jacksonville's premier
- 7:39Speaker 1: luxury auto group at Field Aotto dot Com.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Welcome you back in today.
- 7:44Speaker 1: A little bit of a break from practice, but we've
- 7:46Speaker 1: been out there every single day, so I feel like
- 7:48Speaker 1: today we're gonna go over some names that you need
- 7:50Speaker 1: to know from practice. Some are new people, some are
- 7:52Speaker 1: people you already know but maybe in a different role,
- 7:54Speaker 1: or somebody that's just gonna be really important to this roster.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And we need to talk about it a little bit
- 7:58Speaker 1: because I feel like there's tons of new faces, new names.
- 8:00Speaker 1: This is gonna look a lot different than last year.
- 8:02Speaker 1: And if people aren't at training camp every day, which
- 8:05Speaker 1: most of you aren't, you do want to know some
- 8:07Speaker 1: of these people.
- 8:07Speaker 2: So John, when you're thinking.
- 8:08Speaker 1: About someone not necessarily new, but someone that might have
- 8:12Speaker 1: a different role this year.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Well there's a lot.
- 8:14Speaker 7: I mean I almost talked about Dewey wingerd here because
- 8:17Speaker 7: I think he's going to be a really important member
- 8:19Speaker 7: of the secondary and maybe people will tend to write
- 8:22Speaker 7: him off. But I went with Travis etn who is
- 8:25Speaker 7: also not new. But you know, in March and April,
- 8:30Speaker 7: I'm getting questions all the time about trading him, and
- 8:33Speaker 7: it was almost like people wanted to make him an
- 8:35Speaker 7: afterthought because all of a sudden, he's a back coming up.
- 8:38Speaker 4: On year five.
- 8:39Speaker 7: He's not an afterthought. He's He's going to be very
- 8:42Speaker 7: important in this offense. And I have gotten the impression
- 8:45Speaker 7: that every time the coaches see him on the field,
- 8:48Speaker 7: they like him a little more. And whatever preconceived notion
- 8:52Speaker 7: there may have been about what he was or wasn't,
- 8:55Speaker 7: he fits what they're trying to do. And in this
- 8:57Speaker 7: in this Liham Cohen offense that emphasizes back, emphasizes versatility,
- 9:02Speaker 7: emphasizes being able to catch the ball out of the backfield. Uh.
- 9:05Speaker 7: You know, Travis has been good around here, really good.
- 9:08Speaker 7: I don't know if he's gonna match his career high rushing,
- 9:13Speaker 7: but I'm betting he's going to match his career high
- 9:15Speaker 7: in terms of being important to.
- 9:17Speaker 4: The offense and being really really good.
- 9:19Speaker 7: I think he's gonna have a really good year and
- 9:22Speaker 7: set himself up for a very interesting off season next year,
- 9:24Speaker 7: wherever he may be.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Next that's a good point.
- 9:27Speaker 1: This is the final year for his rookie deal, so
- 9:28Speaker 1: he'll be up for a new contract, whether here or not.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So you have to imagine that'll be a motivating fact.
- 9:33Speaker 5: We'll see. I mean, the fans are trying to play trade.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Machine John yesterday.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Yesterday was the world.
- 9:39Speaker 5: He's not going anywhere.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Not that I've heard, is he No?
- 9:42Speaker 4: No, I'd be.
- 9:44Speaker 7: Right now if I'm gonna say he's not gonna be
- 9:46Speaker 7: a trade anywhere on this roster, maybe in running back.
- 9:48Speaker 7: Who knows Traves etn I think they're a lesser team
- 9:53Speaker 7: without him right now?
- 9:54Speaker 1: I agree, Who is someone a name you need to know?
- 9:58Speaker 2: According to JP, I was.
- 10:00Speaker 6: Thinking about Parker Washington because he was fresh on my
- 10:02Speaker 6: mind after practice on Tuesday where he was all over
- 10:05Speaker 6: the field, and you know, I think he kind of
- 10:06Speaker 6: got lost in the headlines of the offseason with Travis
- 10:09Speaker 6: Hunter and Deonny Browner. But outside, I just wanted to
- 10:12Speaker 6: go defense. And we've seen Jordan Lewis this training camp.
- 10:16Speaker 6: Come in here and really I think take over the
- 10:20Speaker 6: attitude of the back end of this defense. Free agent addition,
- 10:24Speaker 6: longtime Dallas cowboy was probably lost in some of the
- 10:28Speaker 6: outside of the spotlight in Dallas a little bit. There's
- 10:31Speaker 6: you know, a lot of headliners down there, but a
- 10:34Speaker 6: really good nickel cornerback and he's coming here and proving it.
- 10:38Speaker 6: I think in training camp so far, with his ability
- 10:42Speaker 6: to get the hands on the football. Almost every day
- 10:44Speaker 6: he's got his hands on it somehow, whether it's a
- 10:46Speaker 6: pass deflection or an interception or a vocal leadership moment.
- 10:52Speaker 6: I mean, he's all over the place on defense. But
- 10:54Speaker 6: especially since we talked about earlier, it's a little thin
- 10:57Speaker 6: right now in the secondary. Some injuries are popping up.
- 11:00Speaker 6: He's a guy you're really gonna rely on in Jordan Lewis.
- 11:03Speaker 6: And that's why, uh, that's the name.
- 11:05Speaker 5: I think.
- 11:05Speaker 7: Yeah, I think people tend to always wanna focus on
- 11:10Speaker 7: additions as a reason the team can get better.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Guys on the roster can get better too.
- 11:14Speaker 7: I think guys like Trayvon Uh, I think there's guys
- 11:17Speaker 7: in this roster are gonna make a big jump. I
- 11:18Speaker 7: he even betjmight. But if you're looking for outside editions
- 11:23Speaker 7: that are gonna make this team better.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Jordan Lewis is right in there.
- 11:26Speaker 7: Jordan Lewis, Yame Brown, those two guys tangible ways this
- 11:30Speaker 7: is gonna look different.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Uh.
- 11:32Speaker 7: I don't know about pro bol, I don't know about
- 11:34Speaker 7: any of that, but I think Jordan Lewis is a
- 11:36Speaker 7: guy who might be the best defensive back on this
- 11:39Speaker 7: team this year.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I think so.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Obviously, also bring in he's a veteran, he's been in
- 11:43Speaker 1: the league for eight years. He brings in that presence, presence,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and a little bit of what I would say is
- 11:48Speaker 1: it wasn't a lack of leadership, but I felt like
- 11:50Speaker 1: the communication on defense last year was certainly lacking, and
- 11:52Speaker 1: it felt like there wasn't always someone at every level
- 11:55Speaker 1: that could kind of pull it together. And he feels
- 11:57Speaker 1: like that guy in the defensive back room or in
- 11:59Speaker 1: that area of the field that can pull things together sometimes.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Guys, you know, I'm not a big free agency guy.
- 12:06Speaker 7: I don't necessarily think that you automatically get better through
- 12:09Speaker 7: that because it's hard to fit and you don't know
- 12:11Speaker 7: what you're getting a lot of times, Jordan Lewis is
- 12:15Speaker 7: a guy that when you unwrap the present, you're fired
- 12:18Speaker 7: up about it. Yeah, and then you know, there's always
- 12:20Speaker 7: that president. You put him in the tree, thank you
- 12:21Speaker 7: forget about. He's the one you still like two or
- 12:24Speaker 7: three months later because he's exactly what you want. He's
- 12:27Speaker 7: a pro, he knows how to prepare, he fits, he's
- 12:30Speaker 7: gonna make plays. He's not over the hill. I think
- 12:34Speaker 7: it's gonna be a great free decign.
- 12:35Speaker 6: And he's not afraid to mix it up with the
- 12:37Speaker 6: other team occasionally too if he needs to. You know,
- 12:39Speaker 6: if he backs it up with a good play, that's
- 12:42Speaker 6: the perfect scenario. But when it matters, he's the guy
- 12:46Speaker 6: that can, I think, be vocal for this football team
- 12:48Speaker 6: and for this defense.
- 12:49Speaker 2: That's at the tone we love that I went defense
- 12:52Speaker 2: as well.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Mine is Mason Skis because we haven't seen him on
- 12:57Speaker 1: the field yet. He started the we saw him an Ota,
- 13:00Speaker 1: we saw him in those workouts looking good, getting involved
- 13:03Speaker 1: in the off season program, but he hasn't been on
- 13:05Speaker 1: the field yet. And I think that's a group that
- 13:08Speaker 1: we looked at maybe in the off season and said
- 13:10Speaker 1: we really need to see an improvement from there, and
- 13:12Speaker 1: it wasn't a bunch of additions.
- 13:13Speaker 2: So it's going to have to come within.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Eric Arms said obviously moving back to his natural position
- 13:18Speaker 1: defensive tackle, but he hasn't been on the field recently either,
- 13:21Speaker 1: so that makes even more pressure on Mason Sith when
- 13:24Speaker 1: he comes back. I would love to see him before
- 13:26Speaker 1: the end of the training camp. I don't want to
- 13:28Speaker 1: go in and not have seen him yet. But for me,
- 13:31Speaker 1: that's a name to keep an eye on, because if
- 13:33Speaker 1: he's not back yet and Eric Armstead's also dealing with
- 13:36Speaker 1: an injury, I'm now concerned about that position group.
- 13:38Speaker 4: A little bit.
- 13:39Speaker 6: I mean, it feels like to me that he was
- 13:41Speaker 6: one of the talks of the off season, like they
- 13:43Speaker 6: liked him a lot in what he was doing in
- 13:45Speaker 6: the off season program.
- 13:46Speaker 5: And then now the injury has popped up.
- 13:48Speaker 6: I could foresee it though maybe in the next week
- 13:51Speaker 6: or so him trying to get back out there. He
- 13:52Speaker 6: would see him on the side right now, and with
- 13:55Speaker 6: Armstead off to the side.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Also, I mean, I'm doing this again, like what.
- 13:59Speaker 6: Happens at the if it's a tackle at these positions,
- 14:01Speaker 6: if these guys aren't ready, it's a weakness up front
- 14:05Speaker 6: right now, uh, in terms of depth.
- 14:08Speaker 5: But let's go play it out and see what happens. John,
- 14:10Speaker 5: But I mean he's a guy you gotta have.
- 14:11Speaker 6: You counted on him. They drafted him high previous regime.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Did gotta see him on the field.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Yeah, I think they can be okay for a couple
- 14:18Speaker 7: of weeks with Lacey.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Devon.
- 14:23Speaker 7: Yeah, the new free agent sign that they just brought
- 14:25Speaker 7: in and I'm drawing a blank. But they've got some
- 14:27Speaker 7: pieces there and you can get by it for a
- 14:29Speaker 7: couple of weeks. But if they're gonna be strong on
- 14:32Speaker 7: the interior, to me, Mason Smith is the one defensive
- 14:36Speaker 7: interior guy who has a chance to be a star.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Uh.
- 14:41Speaker 7: I'm not sure Armstead can be a star anymore. I
- 14:43Speaker 7: think he can be solid, but he's he's in his
- 14:45Speaker 7: eleventh year. I don't know if there's gonna be an
- 14:46Speaker 7: ascension there. Mason Smith has the ability to be a star.
- 14:50Speaker 7: There's certain things on this team you think, okay, they
- 14:52Speaker 7: can be special and really get better fast if this happens.
- 14:56Speaker 7: If the receiver's core is as good as we think, uh,
- 14:59Speaker 7: and it it, Mason Smith makes the interior strong and
- 15:03Speaker 7: special instead of just Ugh. Then all of a sudden
- 15:06Speaker 7: that can mean being a lot better in a hurry.
- 15:08Speaker 7: So he's important coming.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Up after the break, we're gonna talk specifically about the
- 15:13Speaker 1: edge rushers on the team and tell you what's on
- 15:14Speaker 1: the roster right now.
- 15:21Speaker 7: Check Dan.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Brought to you by dream Finders' Homes.
- 15:22Speaker 1: For twelve years, dream Finders' Homes have been how to
- 15:25Speaker 1: call themselves the official homebuilder of the Jacksonville Jaguars because
- 15:28Speaker 1: a dreamfinders dot Com for all of the available inventory,
- 15:31Speaker 1: Go Jacks.
- 15:34Speaker 9: It takes us just coming in and being ourselves every day,
- 15:36Speaker 9: being true to ourselves. As far as we obviously know
- 15:40Speaker 9: it's a physical sport. We all want to come up
- 15:41Speaker 9: here here every physical but at the end of the day,
- 15:44Speaker 9: it's either you're gonna win or you're gonna lose, and
- 15:46Speaker 9: don't nobody want to lose. So coming there with that mindset,
- 15:49Speaker 9: I feel like as far as with our defensive perspective,
- 15:51Speaker 9: we want to be physical, want to stop and run,
- 15:53Speaker 9: and that's our main focus.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Person Ravon Walker, entering his fourth season here already feels
- 15:59Speaker 1: like flies a little bit.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Wow, that's crazy.
- 16:03Speaker 1: But just in terms of the defense, obviously we talked
- 16:07Speaker 1: a little bit about the defensive line just before the break,
- 16:09Speaker 1: but the edge rushers, you got Josh Heindalen you've got Trayvon,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you feel good about that. But as we mentioned, I
- 16:14Speaker 1: feel like some about the interior. Will will that affect
- 16:18Speaker 1: how many sacks they have?
- 16:19Speaker 4: Will that?
- 16:19Speaker 2: How much will that affect it?
- 16:21Speaker 5: I mean, I think that usually does.
- 16:23Speaker 6: If we don't have a push in the middle, makes
- 16:25Speaker 6: it that much tougher for the edge guys to get
- 16:27Speaker 6: home when the quarterback and just sit there in the.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Pocket might have to move.
- 16:30Speaker 6: So I think it all runs in tandem. However, they'll
- 16:33Speaker 6: tell you they need to do their own work and
- 16:35Speaker 6: get there too. And even though there have been issues
- 16:39Speaker 6: at times in the interior, Trayvon Walker still gott in
- 16:42Speaker 6: his ten at least the last couple of years, so
- 16:45Speaker 6: I think the arro continues to rise for him.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Josh Hein Allen is always motivated to step up his
- 16:52Speaker 5: game on the other side.
- 16:53Speaker 6: And then you add in Ogba, veteran guy who's been
- 16:56Speaker 6: around the league for a minute, and the Duan Smooth
- 16:59Speaker 6: is back in play at defensive end, and you've got
- 17:02Speaker 6: some rotational guys there John behind these two starters.
- 17:05Speaker 7: I'm a big believer that, look, you have to have
- 17:09Speaker 7: good pass rushers. You have to have very good pass
- 17:11Speaker 7: rus in the NFL. But I think the biggest factor
- 17:16Speaker 7: in pass rush that gets overlooked are you getting into
- 17:20Speaker 7: situations where you know the other team's gonna pass because
- 17:24Speaker 7: how many how many sacks do you get on second three?
- 17:26Speaker 4: Right?
- 17:27Speaker 7: So you've got to get in those distant situations and
- 17:30Speaker 7: you've gotta have leads. So I think Trayvon and Josh
- 17:33Speaker 7: can both be thirteen fourteen SAT guys if they're you know,
- 17:39Speaker 7: late game situations, if they're leading, and if they get
- 17:42Speaker 7: a lot pass rush opportunities.
- 17:43Speaker 4: So I think they're better. With the depth on the edge,
- 17:46Speaker 4: they're better.
- 17:47Speaker 7: That's why I think the Mason Smith the interior the
- 17:49Speaker 7: line is so important. You've got to be in third
- 17:53Speaker 7: and eight, second and nine situations like that or the
- 17:56Speaker 7: best pass rushers aren't gonna get ten sacks, you know,
- 17:59Speaker 7: if you're not in that, And.
- 18:00Speaker 6: That means we'll always tell you, hey, we got to
- 18:02Speaker 6: earn the right to go rush the pastor that means
- 18:04Speaker 6: stop the run and get in those situations in those
- 18:07Speaker 6: early downs to make it third of eight because they've
- 18:10Speaker 6: stopped the run twice.
- 18:11Speaker 5: You don't do that, you really don't have a shot. Yeah.
- 18:14Speaker 7: Hall of Famer Dwight Herney told me once he had
- 18:16Speaker 7: his best year rushing the passer on a year where
- 18:18Speaker 7: he had three and a half sacks.
- 18:20Speaker 4: I said, how in the world could that be.
- 18:21Speaker 7: It was a year where the Colts couldn't stop the
- 18:23Speaker 7: run and he got in very few pass rushing situations.
- 18:26Speaker 7: He was coming off the ball better, etcetera, etcetera, doing
- 18:28Speaker 7: what he thought he did right better, didn't have opportunities,
- 18:31Speaker 7: So they've got to get That's why, even though fans
- 18:37Speaker 7: think it's a passing league, it is a passing league,
- 18:39Speaker 7: it's a running league if you can't stop the darn run.
- 18:42Speaker 1: John, I feel like one of our favorite pastimes when
- 18:44Speaker 1: we sit next to each other in the press box
- 18:46Speaker 1: when we travel on the road is always to see
- 18:49Speaker 1: how teams are going to run the complete opposite way
- 18:51Speaker 1: of whatever Trayvon's on, because I feel like his rushing defense,
- 18:55Speaker 1: at least run defense, is one of his, maybe not
- 18:58Speaker 1: as heralded, highlights of his game.
- 18:59Speaker 4: I think it's.
- 19:01Speaker 7: He's great there and that's the thing that you can't
- 19:06Speaker 7: take away from him, meaning, no matter what, he's gonna
- 19:09Speaker 7: be good at that. Sack numbers sometimes rise and fall
- 19:12Speaker 7: based on circumstance, being a man against the run is
- 19:18Speaker 7: always there and the team can always rely on that.
- 19:22Speaker 7: It's why he's a very safe player in terms of Okay,
- 19:27Speaker 7: why are they gonna be good? Is he gonna be good?
- 19:30Speaker 7: He's always gonna be big against the run JP because
- 19:34Speaker 7: he's so strong as sets the edge so well well.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Certain the edge, that's what it's all about.
- 19:37Speaker 6: And he's so stout and strong and long arms and
- 19:42Speaker 6: everything that goes into that process. And it's only gotten
- 19:46Speaker 6: better over time for him too. If that's if that's
- 19:48Speaker 6: the floor, you're doing pretty good and you can build
- 19:51Speaker 6: everything else around that with Trayvon, And it's felt like
- 19:53Speaker 6: he's it feels like he's done that so far.
- 19:55Speaker 7: Yeah, there were three or four years around here where
- 19:58Speaker 7: like when you'd be watching the game, if there was
- 20:00Speaker 7: a defensive player down and it was forty one, he
- 20:04Speaker 7: tow to hold your breath and please don't let it
- 20:07Speaker 7: be forty one. It's forty four for me now and
- 20:12Speaker 7: forty one, but I don't want to see forty four
- 20:14Speaker 7: go down because overlook him until he's not there, and
- 20:18Speaker 7: then I think fans are really is how important.
- 20:20Speaker 6: And I like the fact too that he just goes
- 20:22Speaker 6: about his business. He doesn't worry anymore about the draft stuff.
- 20:25Speaker 6: It feels like he says he doesn't. At least, he
- 20:28Speaker 6: just goes and plays his game. He's not worried about
- 20:30Speaker 6: Hutchinson and Detroit and all those things when they were
- 20:32Speaker 6: coming out. He's made his own career and he does
- 20:36Speaker 6: this thing, and he plays in this defense where he
- 20:38Speaker 6: needs to, and I think it's admirable. Actually, he doesn't
- 20:42Speaker 6: worry about all the noise outside. He just goes and works.
- 20:45Speaker 2: I believe him when he says it. I do.
- 20:48Speaker 1: We talked a little bit about some of the additions
- 20:50Speaker 1: in the offseason, obviously one Emmanuel Agua coming in, a
- 20:53Speaker 1: veteran Dwan Smoot coming back to town.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Is that enough depth for you?
- 20:57Speaker 7: How do you feel about edge is four nine well
- 21:01Speaker 7: Gard Deck I think can be a little bit of
- 21:03Speaker 7: a factor there too. They've got some options that we
- 21:09Speaker 7: don't know out of that bunch what the role is
- 21:11Speaker 7: gonna be yet, or even who's gonna be on the
- 21:13Speaker 7: roster out of that bunch, But there's certainly more options,
- 21:15Speaker 7: and you feel like there's least guys who have done it. Look,
- 21:20Speaker 7: you'd always like more. You'd like to have a third
- 21:23Speaker 7: and fourth guy who can get ten sacks. I don't
- 21:25Speaker 7: know if you're gonna have that, but it does feel
- 21:28Speaker 7: like there are more guys who can make an impact,
- 21:31Speaker 7: certainly smooth as a guy. I think you've got two
- 21:35Speaker 7: guys who can affect it no matter what, and then
- 21:37Speaker 7: you've got three more where if you get decent coverage,
- 21:41Speaker 7: who may need one step more than the other two.
- 21:44Speaker 7: But I think it's gonna be a better pass rush
- 21:45Speaker 7: it was last year, as long as they're in circumstances
- 21:48Speaker 7: where they can show it.
- 21:49Speaker 6: Yeah, And how long is Ogba have been in the
- 21:51Speaker 6: league now? A little bit like he's been around nine
- 21:54Speaker 6: I think, yeah, a long time, So he's got a
- 21:56Speaker 6: lot of time on task here. If he's your rotational guy,
- 22:00Speaker 6: and if he has gas left in the tank, I
- 22:03Speaker 6: think you're a pretty good shit.
- 22:04Speaker 2: It'll be your ten for him.
- 22:05Speaker 1: So I feel like, yeah, overall, I'm not overly stressed
- 22:08Speaker 1: about this group, which is exciting because I feel like
- 22:11Speaker 1: usually when we're going to the season, we're like, where's
- 22:12Speaker 1: what's going on?
- 22:13Speaker 2: Like who's backing them up?
- 22:14Speaker 1: But I feel a little bit better about this forsom
- 22:16Speaker 1: than I have in the past, So definitely something to
- 22:18Speaker 1: look forward to once the regular season starts and see
- 22:20Speaker 1: what the pattern of.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Switching in and out is going to be.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I imagine it'll be different than last year, so that's always
- 22:26Speaker 1: a plus as well.
- 22:26Speaker 5: No hockey line changes this year.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I know Pete doesn't get to talk about the hockey
- 22:30Speaker 1: line changes any risk.
- 22:31Speaker 5: On Monday, just loved the line changes.
- 22:33Speaker 1: No more, I don't think, say but let's we'll tell
- 22:35Speaker 1: you what's coming up the rest of the week after
- 22:37Speaker 1: the break. Jag fans, you want customized Jaguars furniture for
- 22:48Speaker 1: your home, check out zipchare dot com. The brows all
- 22:50Speaker 1: the customizable options. Zipchair is furniture for fans.
- 22:54Speaker 8: I think it means guys that usually compete. You don't
- 22:57Speaker 8: want guys fighting, you know, all day and reckon the practice.
- 22:59Speaker 8: There's not time for that. But sometimes tempers flare, and
- 23:03Speaker 8: usually that means there's a motion out there. And I
- 23:06Speaker 8: don't think that's a necessarily a bad thing. We don't
- 23:08Speaker 8: want to fight each other all practice, but the guys
- 23:10Speaker 8: are getting heated and competing.
- 23:12Speaker 5: I think that's that's a good thing.
- 23:14Speaker 1: And he that practice we saw our first little fight
- 23:17Speaker 1: of training.
- 23:18Speaker 5: It was like the Notre Dame logo.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Those guys there were squares in helmets.
- 23:24Speaker 6: Which in helmets, which is the whole different ballpark altogether.
- 23:28Speaker 6: But he's right though, I mean, a little intensity is
- 23:30Speaker 6: not a bad thing. They haven't really had it spill
- 23:33Speaker 6: over yet into something like this, and it was quickly
- 23:36Speaker 6: broken up. Nobody broke a hand or a face, so
- 23:39Speaker 6: all's well.
- 23:40Speaker 7: Most coaches will tell you it's really a waste of
- 23:43Speaker 7: time to do it. But you don't get to upset
- 23:46Speaker 7: as long as it doesn't spill in. As long as
- 23:48Speaker 7: you're not making sports enter with it, it's fun.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Everybody stayed at practice today, so all worked itself out.
- 23:53Speaker 2: No media members got in a fight to fight, you.
- 23:57Speaker 5: Know what, Well, entire that's.
- 24:02Speaker 7: Usually the problem, so you know it'll be fighting with
- 24:07Speaker 7: the players.
- 24:09Speaker 1: We got a scrimmage tomorrow. What are you guys hoping
- 24:11Speaker 1: to see out there? I'm just hoping for some more competition.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I think they'll run it similar to what we saw
- 24:16Speaker 1: in the stadium.
- 24:16Speaker 7: Yeah, it's interesting. I'm not sure I remember too scrimmages
- 24:20Speaker 7: around here that have been called that.
- 24:22Speaker 4: You know, you know, you have live periods.
- 24:26Speaker 7: I think that might be something I said for a
- 24:28Speaker 7: couple of years since they started going to this to
- 24:32Speaker 7: the third preseason game. As you get more preseason opportunities
- 24:36Speaker 7: taken away, uh you need something to simulate real game action,
- 24:41Speaker 7: especially when you're in the first year of a coach.
- 24:43Speaker 7: And uh now that Liam needs the reps, but the
- 24:46Speaker 7: team they need to see what this looks like for real.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Uh So it's interesting.
- 24:51Speaker 7: I'm looking for, you know, contact and for efficiency from
- 24:57Speaker 7: the quarterback.
- 24:57Speaker 4: I think would be the two things.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Alignment, assignment, communication. Those have been the buzzwords this week
- 25:03Speaker 6: for Liam Cohen. They had an earlier in the week,
- 25:06Speaker 6: had the practice where they just had periods focusing on that.
- 25:10Speaker 6: Let's see that, all right, turn it up, pads are
- 25:12Speaker 6: back on to scrimmage.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Does that translate?
- 25:16Speaker 6: I think that's a huge question mark for Liam Cohen
- 25:18Speaker 6: and the coaching staff and the players.
- 25:19Speaker 5: They answer on tomorrow.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Mistake free football very important. We will be back tomorrow
- 25:25Speaker 1: for our final episode of Jags Am this week, and
- 25:27Speaker 1: we'll also talk a little bit about the Saints preseason
- 25:30Speaker 1: game coming up this weekend.
