Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_02]: The main thing about Gilmore girls, and I saw it the very moment I opened the script the first time even before I had the job, was the writing, it's so brilliant.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Amy Sherman Paladino is truly a genius, so I was always a stickler about knowing all my lines just for me, and then it turns out Amy Sherman Paladino.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_02]: is crazy with that phrase.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_02]: She really gets upset if people don't, you know, really do the lines as written.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: But six, seven, eight, Kelly.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk to Kelly Bishop.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_01]: I can't believe I'm saying that.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, here we go.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, everybody.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back to Gilmore to say with Terran Haley.

- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: And we were also lucky enough to have it recorded for you to watch and or listen to here today.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: Which I'm so excited that it was.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so excited that everyone who's in the room got to experience what a magical night it was on a marvelous time it was to be with Kelly Bishop, the hilarious Kelly Bishop.

- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm glad that we get to bring you to all of you.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: We of course have more to say about the experience of getting to talk to Kelly, but we will save that for the end of this episode.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: And without further ado, here's Kelly Bishop.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: Hi everybody!
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: Hi!
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: As Olivia mentioned, we are the hosts of Gilmore to say, with Terran Haley, I'm Terra.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: This is Haley.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: Hi Terra.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: Hi.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: We are so honored to be here tonight.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: We've been watching the show for over 20 years.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: And we love to go beyond the rewatch talk about the tropes, the writing, the full circle of love.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: What team are you on?
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, what team are you on?
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: You'll laugh, you'll cry, because you're laughing so hard.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: Logan.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: Team Jess forever.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: But, um,
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: But fun fact, you're actually on one of the podcast episodes right now because we are recording this episode tonight for our listeners.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: So, so glad we're here.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: Tonight is bound to be a magical night.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: So, if you want to revisit it again next Thursday, when I airs on the podcast, you will be in it.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: But tonight is not about us.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: We are simply a vessel for conversation with you.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: the guest of honor.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: So please join me in welcoming the incomparable, the talented, the iconic third Gilmore girl.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: Kelly Bishop.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, Kelly.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: Hi.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: You look wonderful this evening.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: Your outfit is fantastic.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: And speaking of outfits, we're here tonight to celebrate the fact that your book got a new outfit in paperback because the third Gilmore girl in New York Times bestseller is now out in paperback.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_02]: a new outfit, same day of shooting, but boy, they switched it around, didn't they?
- 3:42[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, okay, fine.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have a favorite?
- 3:45[SPEAKER_02]: What?
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: A favorite outfit?
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: You were in red on the first cover, green on the first cover.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_02]: I actually buy both of the outfits, I'm complaining, I will always complain, and I'm always so, I hope this is the honest that everybody will know.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't like the hair.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, really, I can't do anything about that, so I'm just going to shut up.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: The first hair was better.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, okay.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: No, I love it.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: That's just a girl thing.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: It is a girl thing.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: It is a girl thing.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: Beautiful.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: We think you look great.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: The last time that you were here in New York promoting your book was at the 92nd Street Y with Lauren Graham.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: Was anybody in the audience for that?
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: I was, it was an electric evening.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: I felt honored to be in the space, if you're honored to be here now.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: And that is part of the bonus content that you get in the paperback.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_02]: I received a box two weeks ago, and it was a group of the paperback, you know, I'm probably, I don't know about 20 or something like that.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_02]: And I looked at the cover and hated her, and then it looks like it's a whole thing.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it looks really good, but it's kind of thick for it, it should be smaller.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_02]: And then I looked in the back and I said, this whole section of Lauren Graham and me talking.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought, I was quite, I looked like 15 pages or something.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_02]: And I said, well, all I can think of said had to be the 92nd Street.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_02]: Why?
- 5:02[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we talk a lot.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_02]: I feel it's really truly like a daughter too.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, she's my soul daughter.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: So we talk fairly often.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_02]: But I couldn't figure out where they got all this material from, and then I'm going to ask 92nd Street why, which was a glorious evening.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_02]: We had a great time.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm glad they put it in the book.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's very clever of them for two done that.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_02]: I love it.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: How many of you out there have already read or listened to the third Gilmour Girl?
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not just saying this because I'm in here in this room tonight with you.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: This is the best memoir I've ever read.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: And that from the bottom of my heart.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: It is serious.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm serious.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to get emotional thinking about it.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: It is vulnerable.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: It is authentic.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: You held nothing back, maybe you did.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: But it seemed like you held nothing back.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: And that ended up making it so relatable.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: How has it been having your life story out there
- 6:03[SPEAKER_02]: It's very funny because every once in a while I'll say to someone who's not a friend, but someone I'm speaking with or the acquaintance.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_02]: and I'll start to tell them something and I say, I know it was in the book.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_02]: And I go, letter, text, story, I guess I told you everything.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: I had a wonderful time working on it.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_02]: I loved my writer, Lindsay Harris, and she did such a good job.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_02]: And we had a good time on the phone.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_02]: And she really heard my voice.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, she did record me.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_02]: So she had the voice, but she several people who know me,
- 6:34[SPEAKER_02]: have known me through the years said it really was your voice.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_02]: And I said, what I wanted was a very available book that you could get it from in.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_02]: The other compliment I've gotten from people when it is that I feel like I was saying across cocktail table from your coffee shop.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_02]: And that was what I wanted to.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_02]: I wanted to be very much a personal book between me and the reader and boy she nailed it.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm delighted with it.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_02]: I'm really pleased about the book.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's exactly what I said.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: It felt like I was having coffee with you.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: And if you turn on the audio book, the speed up a little bit.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like you're talking at Amy Sherman Paladino pace.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_02]: Well, when I was going to do the audio book came up and they,
- 7:16[SPEAKER_02]: They had said to me that they said it's not actually don't have to do it.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's not in your contract and I said with this voice and that's how everybody catches me.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_02]: And I said I can't somebody else can't do that because they're going to know immediately it's not me.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_02]: So I did it but I had to run.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_02]: I really, I like sound booths and I like the privacy of doing it and we just grab so many pages until
- 7:40[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like maybe 30, 40 pages and we call it a day and come in some other time.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_02]: So it was fun doing the whole experience was really enjoyable.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_02]: And a brand new, I'm not part of the literary world.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_02]: So this was a quite an adventure which I enjoyed thoroughly.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: And what was that reflection like as you were like reading the audiobook?
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: Did you get emotional at all?
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: As you were reading your own story?
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: I don't get emotional.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_02]: No, I do get emotional.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's very funny.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_02]: I was thinking, I actually have a friend who does the same thing.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_02]: And I was really relieved to hear who said, I'm not for instance a cryer.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_02]: The worst things get the more serious I get, the more stable I got.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_02]: I'll say when I cry.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_02]: is when something's beautiful.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_02]: When something is so exquisite and it touches me so deeply, then I start to get emotional.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_02]: And I remember my friend who was a great woman, she's fabulous.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_02]: And she said, I don't cry and I said, oh, it's so glad.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_02]: Because I was so there was something wrong with me.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I just don't fall apart and cry.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_02]: And when I've had to cry, and not really in a stage, although I think I have a couple of times,
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's, I really have to work myself around to it because it's not something I naturally do.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_02]: And it's worked and surprised me at times that suddenly I did a guess on the preparation that it came at the right time.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_02]: But it's tricky, I'm not, I don't cry.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: So it was the last beautiful thing that you cried out.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_02]: It was probably music.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_02]: I can't say specifically what it was, but usually,
- 9:16[SPEAKER_02]: like a symphony orchestra and a certain strain of music will just lift me so much that I, you know, I couldn't even begin to explain what I was thinking.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_02]: It's just, it just pulls me out of myself.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: It most likely was music.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that makes a lot of sense because of the roots, like your roots of being a ballet dancer.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: And what I loved most about the telling of this story was that you started this book on one of the highest highs with the chorus line and then brought us back and pulled us into the moments the early moments of your life.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought that was such just an exquisite way to start the story, but of course, one of the highlights of your life was dance and ballet last year in July of 2025.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: You celebrated the 50th anniversary of a chorus line, which I mean, can you even believe?
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's been 50 years.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's truly amazing.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_02]: It was 50 years.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_02]: I know I was a long time ago, and it was really the start.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_02]: of my second career.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_02]: I was a dancer, I was a really good dancer, very well-trained.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I worked, I just worked kind of whenever I wanted to, but a dancer's life is very short.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't want to be an old dancer.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of considered you an old dancer when you hit about 35.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_02]: You can still do it.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_02]: And you actually can have a lot more finesse.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_02]: But you don't have the strength, you can't do some of the things you used to do when you're younger.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_02]: So I certainly never wanted to be an old answer.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_02]: And the other thing was I wanted to act.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_02]: So I kind of was planning to make that transition, which had a course on how to a lot to do with that.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_02]: And then as Michael Bennett happily embraced me and made me one of the principal characters as we evolved through the workshop, he was actually putting me in a position which is exactly what I wanted.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_02]: I was taking luckily this wonderful story that I knew so well of being a dancer.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_02]: And so this shows about dancers.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_02]: And so I've taken my dancing and then I can move it into the acting.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_02]: really, of course I paid out beautifully.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it was amazing.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: But that's, you know, that's another one of those right place, right time things.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_02]: And it was, it was amazing.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that we got to do the whole thing and then suddenly it's 50 years later.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's just amazing.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: What I think is even more impressive is that you were part of the story building of a chorus lion.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_01]: Was there any part of your history with dance, your relationship with dance, or just being a performer that you felt hit the cutting room floor and didn't end up in the role of Sheila?
- 12:01[SPEAKER_02]: Well, so much of my story ended up with Sheila and At the Ballet, which was first of all, for my money, it was most beautiful song in the show.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_02]: It's just so pretty.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: And it's got different, it's got different rhythms.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: It's got a pounding rhythm, and then turns into a waltz.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: And my actual story was the first part that Sheila sang, Daddy, I always thought, and all that.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_02]: But by the time you get to the second character who is BB, that's also my story, and a lot of women didn't like who played BB didn't like it because they were the, quote, less attractive unquote women.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm going to know that was me.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I asked my mother if I'd be attractive when I grew up and she basically, oh, no, I said, will I be pretty when I grow up?
- 12:47[SPEAKER_02]: And she said,
- 12:51[SPEAKER_02]: She really did, that's she really did.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_02]: And then she said, you'll be very attractive.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: You have a lot of flair.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: She was telling me all this wonderful things I'm standing there looking at her thinking, I'm not going to be pretty.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_02]: What do you know, you know?
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: So that was actually kind of important part of my story.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: They also ended up in at the ballet.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm delighted about that.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_02]: It's just, it's amazing that Michael Bennett,
- 13:19[SPEAKER_02]: In all the stories we told that infamous night in the circle that was the genesis of a chorus line that he picked me and my story as one of the people who are going to be principles in the show who knew we had no idea we're just working on it
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's really, really special.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like you don't necessarily get that nowadays with Broadway shows.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, usually there's a writer, you're the actor.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: That's the relationship, right?
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: Are there any shows right now or in the future that would take you back to Broadway?
- 13:53[SPEAKER_02]: I have to admit to none.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_02]: I am old and I love the stage.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so happy on the stage.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna have a right here.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_02]: It's like home for me.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_02]: and seeing a health and the whole thing I've been doing it for so many years, but actually doing eight shows a week, having one day off a week, after those eight shows, these days with the new schedule that obviously makes sense because they make more money this way is three mountain days a week.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's a hard schedule, and I've done it, but I'm old now, and I kind of think I can't plus I don't live in New York City, and when you ask me that, of course, I immediately think abroad where you're off Broadway.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't occur to me.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_02]: It might be great, so I'll tell you, but I, I,
- 14:45[SPEAKER_02]: I love the theater, and I love being in the theater, and I was so happy on the stage, but I just, I think the schedule more than anything.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_02]: I just don't think I would do it.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: No, I don't think I could.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_02]: I totally understand.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: I'm 34, and I can't.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, it's hard.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very grueling schedule, and one that I do think can sometimes turn people away from wanting to pursue that career in theater, because it's a lie.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it is, but it didn't wear me out when I was, and especially when I was a dancer.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we're doing all those shows.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_02]: We're still doing eight shows a week.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_02]: And I take a couple of ballet classes during the week.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, I was strong.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I take the dog for long walks in the park.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: And I was strong.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm old now.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm not as strong.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: So I just don't think it's likely.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_02]: I never say never, but of course.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think it's too much.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: If we could make the schedule work for you.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: What role do you would be like your G.I.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: wearsh moment?
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I haven't thought about a G.I.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_02]: I wish for the simple reason I've kind of satisfied myself to say, I'm probably not going to do theater anymore, but I have to think on that.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_02]: I'll send you a note or something.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't know what it would be.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: It would certainly have to be a very old woman.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the one thing I've had has occurred to me and I might have even put it in the book was that the best way to finish out my acting career on the stage if I was going to do it was to play Madame Arn felt in a little night music which happens to be one of my favorite shows.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_02]: I love that show.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's so weird and wonderful, but Madam Arnfeld knowledge is a good song with liaison.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_02]: But at the end of the show, she at least the productions I've done.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_02]: I've done two regenerative productions radically different.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_02]: She dies.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_02]: But she's sitting there and she, the character dies.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_02]: And then they realized she's dead and the whole thing I thought, wow, what if you died on cue?
- 16:50[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, one of the obituary that would be the best actress and the most constant of that, how professional.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's great.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_02]: No, I really have thought about that.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_02]: I thought wouldn't that be, it would just die.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: I would be an award-winning performance.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_02]: That would be in history both to go ashore.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_02]: I'd have to get like some posthumous award, because of course.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: OK, yes.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: Call the Tony Awards, prepare them.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: But alongside being, in a course line, creating the role of Sheila, you also were in dirty dancing, which is also truly iconic.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: But we cannot ignore the fact that this book is called the third Gilmour Girl.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: And that that also, that show, that role, the role of Emily Gilmour lives on.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: But for you, at the time, it was really just going into work every day.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: What did you look forward to going on to set of Gilmour Girls?
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: With Gilmour Girl.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: Every day.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_02]: Well, the main thing about Gilmore girls and I saw it the very moment I opened the script the first time even before I had the job was the writing it's so brilliant I mean Amy Sherman Paladino is truly a genius and she how she retains so much and it's very different I mean it could be something current it could be something it's very popular is something that you know a throwback to 1897
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: Plus it's a very clever writing, it's really structured beautifully.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_02]: Her characters are wonderful, and so the real thing was to deliver what is on the page.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't realize this until I was working with Amy for a while.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's just the way I work is to know all the line perfect, word perfect in the lines.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_02]: Now, a lot of actors, and it's forgiven a great deal, especially in television, they'll have the scene, they'll read the scene, but maybe they'll add the label a little bit, or they'll add in something because they like the rhythm better, or they just maybe forget what they were supposed to say and go on.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_02]: And I never did that because I felt with a playwright that they work so hard on their product.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_02]: And they rewrite and rewrite and rewrite and they have readings and then they rewrite.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think that every word a playwright puts down including the commons and the escalation points and everything else that's in there is there for a reason has been really thought over and worried about
- 19:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I've always said, he's the architect, I am the builder.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_02]: And so my job is to look at this thing and script to me is a blueprint.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_02]: And that's my job is to make this blueprint come to life.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_02]: So I was always a stickler about knowing all my lines just for me.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_02]: And then it turns out Amy Sherman Paladino.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_02]: is crazy with that phrase.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_02]: She really gets upset.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_02]: If people don't really do the lines as written, and you find some people are asked to return to the show, and some people are not.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_02]: And so I thought, wow, that's just lucky, because that's the way I work.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_02]: And so I like it.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_02]: So that was,
- 20:10[SPEAKER_02]: I made her part and then I had wonderful co-actors.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, terrific.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_02]: I loved Edward Herman, and Lauren Graham and I are like, yes, yes.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_02]: He was a wonderful actor and a delightful man, very, very bright.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_02]: And we became friends when we were there.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_02]: We didn't see each other.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_02]: He lived in Connecticut, I live in Jersey.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_02]: And we both fly out there.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: So maybe if we were stuck out there for a weekend because we had a show that went from one week to the next, we would have dinner together or something.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: But I just adore it.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's just a really sharp guy.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: And Lauren and I have,
- 20:50[SPEAKER_02]: really maintained our friendship.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_02]: She is like a daughter to me.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_02]: She's incredibly bright too and talented.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_02]: So I really had so many wonderful experiences with those people in the delightful thing about being able to do a show for a long time, more than just a season.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_02]: is then you get to know the crew.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_02]: I never knew the crew, I know the other actors and the wardrobe people and you know your dresser and you know that, but I never got to know the crew.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_02]: And they were a lot of effort into making you look good.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, it's kind of nice.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_02]: So, I mean, I just enjoyed the whole thing.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_02]: It was because I was proud of it.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: I thought I was not just me, but the whole thing was quality work.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_02]: So, it made me very proud.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_02]: to be part of it.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_02]: And then apparently y'all agree.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be too.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: We too.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: Very too, anyway.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_00]: And we might be only one who thought that.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: There is someone Amy Sherman Paladino.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_00]: She wrote the forward.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_00]: We were talking about your relationship with her.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: She wrote the beginning of this book.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: And she talked about finding Emily Gilmore.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_02]: Well, what was wonderful is Amy had said to me, and I think this was right about during shutdown.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: I'm pretty sure.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_02]: And she said, we didn't talk very often.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_02]: And it was mainly texts, but it wasn't even that often with that.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_02]: And she said, you should write a book.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_02]: And I said, I'm another people said to me, a guy should write a book.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I get the idea, and it's just, and then finally I got to a point where I thought, I'm saying something so much that people are trying to say, just shut up and write a book, but I guess that's what you meant.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_02]: So, and I said, why would I write a book?
- 22:38[SPEAKER_02]: Why?
- 22:38[SPEAKER_02]: And she said, you've had a really interesting career.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_02]: You've done a lot of stuff.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_02]: She had the chorus, I don't know.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, yeah, all right, I've heard it before, and then I had the good fortune to have a meeting with a literary media group.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_02]: We had a meeting in my agency office, and they pitched the whole idea of writing a book.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_02]: They were saying things like,
- 23:05[SPEAKER_02]: We decided that this is one of the people on our list that could conceivably sell a book and the whole thing and we can help you with it if you need a co-writer.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_02]: If you want a co-writer, we can help you.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_02]: And I said, of course, I would.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_02]: And they said, then we can walk you through the process.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm going, okay.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_02]: And then I enjoyed working with my, with Lindsay Harris and as I said, my co-writer so much.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_02]: And it actually just became a very,
- 23:33[SPEAKER_02]: less and experience.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's something I look forward to each week, our little sessions, because we're on the phone.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_02]: She was in LA.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't even see her.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know what she looked like.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_02]: You know, this whole time that we worked on the book.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_02]: You could pass her on the street and you wouldn't even know.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_02]: It wouldn't have known.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_02]: And we talked for about two and a half hours and then she said, okay, I'm shutting off the record right now.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_02]: And then we just dish and stuff.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, there was so much that we had in common with chat and then she'd send me pages and
- 23:59[SPEAKER_02]: It was just an easy process.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_02]: And then it turned out so well.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I'm amazed, I'm delighted, I'm thrilled.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_02]: I thank you again.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_00]: What was that process like between the two of you, were there things because you're so honest in this book?
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like the amount of things that you've included about your life, there were moments where I was like, oh, Kelly, at the dust to read about it and not at judgmental way, but just more so wondering what that boundary between the two of you was trying to figure out what you wanted to be honest about, maybe if there was anything that required some convincing to include or from the beginning, you were like, just put it in there.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_02]: But generally speaking, and anyone who knows me knows I'm honest, I just am.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_02]: I decided a long time ago having hung around with a few people who were liars, including my first husband.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_02]: We heard that he was bad, he was really alive.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_02]: And I watch people who, and it wasn't just about our relationships, about everything, and I go, I watch them, and they tell this lie, and then they have to repeat the lie, and then they have to go back to the thing, and then they have to remember the lie, so they can reinforce the lie, and I'd stand and go, that's so much work.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_02]: Can't you just tell the truth?
- 25:10[SPEAKER_02]: you know, I know it's painful or just, you know, I have a really clever way of doing them saying, I'm not interested in talking about that, you know, I mean, I don't have to make up a story.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_02]: And so I'm very truthful anyway.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's so much easier in life to tell the truth.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and if you don't want to, you just say that's not a subject I want to go to.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_02]: And, like for instance, even the abortion section, that wasn't in the book.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_02]: It was something I didn't put it in just because it's private, it's personal, it's painful, and it happened, and I was fine with that until the Supreme Court took away Roe B.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_02]: Wade, and I suddenly went, wait a minute, that was what we were, that was our freedom, that was our control over our own body side that we had that and now it's gone, and so when
- 26:05[SPEAKER_02]: I want to talk about the abortion because I've got to let people know, not just, oh, I did it, is that I wanted people to, especially people who were so violently opposed to it, to understand how dignified, if that's the right word, the process was, how respectful,
- 26:23[SPEAKER_02]: planned parenthood was in terms of the fetus, the pregnant woman, how they really, they counseled you and they made sure that you knew what you were doing and then you had to wait 48 hours and then you come back and have a little mini session again.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_02]: So the whole process was done with great respect.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_02]: And it was a frivolous and all, and I wanted people to understand that.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's not something you want to go through, but at least that's what it was.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I was just so offended.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_02]: We fought really hard for our rights, equipment.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_00]: And now it's like, yeah, I mean.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know, I don't know if the day will ever come, we get that back.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_02]: you know I really don't.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'm really kind of heartbroken because women weren't any crazy or then then they aren't out of it.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_02]: I mean it's not like it's something everybody is running around throwing their clothes off and that's just because there was a there was a roe-feet weight but it was just it was it was it was our right it was our body it was I liked it.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: But I think the inclusion of that in the story, I think overall what I felt about all of the points of honesty that other people might withhold, it feels like at the end of this, you lived a very shame-free life and you wanted other people to see that all of the points of life that you might have felt were shameful, aren't necessarily, they're just the life you led.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_02]: Frankly, if you're not I'm thinking about it, it's seem if you feel shame, then you feel you've done something wrong.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, you can do things that are controversial.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_02]: And dangerous and the other people may not like, but it's not I think that you've done it, knowing this wrong.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: This is wrong.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'm doing that.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'm doing it anyway.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_02]: No, no, no, no.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_02]: This is what I think is right.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not ashamed of it.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry that it makes other people uncomfortable.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_02]: But if anything comes up that's going to make me feel ashamed, I won't do it.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_02]: For example, period, absolutely.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_00]: But going back to things that people liked, one of them was Amy Sherman Paladino liked you.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: You walked in the room and she said, that's my Emily Gilmore.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: How did it feel reading that forward back?
- 28:46[SPEAKER_02]: I heard that story much later.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know because it took them so long to hire me.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_02]: right really that usually you go in you do an audition I really really wanted this job I worked very hard on that audition I mean you carry the pages for and if you
- 29:01[SPEAKER_02]: As spiring actors, this is a kind of a good trick that I developed for myself in auditioning.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_02]: As you carry the pages, the sides, whatever you want to call them, the script.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_02]: When you go into audition for a pilot, a film, whatever it is, you know the words.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_02]: You've really worked hard on this.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_02]: You've actually memorized it, but you hold it.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_02]: Because if you put it down, or you go in without it, and you do that whole thing,
- 29:30[SPEAKER_02]: This is my final performance.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_02]: If you hold the pages, they're blown away because they love what you're doing, but you still have the pages, which means there's more to come, you know?
- 29:40[SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, I really, and then what I would very often do because I used to save the pages if I really wanted the audition.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_02]: And I kept thinking, I've got a pile of these things that nobody's going to, I think the answer was no.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_02]: Why are you saving these things to make yourself crazy?
- 29:57[SPEAKER_02]: So I got to do a habit just for me when I walked out of the audition, if they weren't looking, they couldn't see me do it.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: I chuck them, I just throw the, and I go, because I can't do anymore.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_02]: I did the audition, it's over.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_02]: I can't do it again.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_02]: And so why am I carrying the pages?
- 30:15[SPEAKER_02]: To make myself crazy?
- 30:16[UNKNOWN]: No.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_02]: down in time.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_02]: Now Amy is showing palliative and another thing that I failed to mention was when she did this whole thing with the book, we started working on it and I guess I guess we had gotten to quite a publication and she said I will write the preface if you want me to duh.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I was so honored, I mean for her to write the preface to my book and so she did and it was wonderful.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: Then we went to doing the, when I did the audio book, they said to me, God, we'd love to have Amy do the audio book.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_02]: So I happened to see her because I was doing a guest spot on Mrs. Mazele and I saw her at the, I wouldn't have a good show, really good show.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I saw her at the table read, and I told her that they wanted her to do the voice on the audio book.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_02]: And she can't do that.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: I've got a terrible speaking voice.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_02]: I can't do it.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to know you don't.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_02]: I can't.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, fine.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_02]: So she didn't do it.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_02]: Someone else read it.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_02]: And then I get a text from her one day saying, Oh my God, have a cup of coffee girl.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: This is so slow.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_02]: So she's complaining about the reading of this woman doing her words.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_02]: And I said, size had Amy.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_02]: They would love to have you do it.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_02]: If you would be willing to go in and record it, even though the book's out.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_02]: You know, in the audiobooks, because out.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_02]: If you would re-record it, I'm sure they would come to you.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, literally she,
- 31:58[SPEAKER_02]: They were shooting their show in Brooklyn.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_02]: She lives in Brooklyn Heights.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_02]: And so I said, I think it could be on your terms.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I think they would be thrilled to actually have you.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, they were.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_02]: So I just gave them the information and back to way.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't know and talked to me about it at all.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_02]: And then pretty soon, her voice is in the book.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_02]: So that was great.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: She was amazing.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's new information to me.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_01]: I did not know that.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was some other woman, and she obviously heard it, and she didn't well if there's Amy again.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_02]: She didn't like the reading.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_02]: This is what she does.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_02]: That's what she does with actor.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_02]: She doesn't like that reading or whatever it is, and so she didn't like that reading.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_02]: So she, and that's why I got this whole thing about, oh my god, I have a cup of coffee on that.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_02]: And I said, okay, you do it.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: You do it.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she had the opportunity to do it.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: And then she had no.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, so funny.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_02]: She had the opportunity to do it.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_02]: She had the opportunity to do it.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm sure it's very good.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: But when I listened to it, it was the original person who recorded it.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: So I realized that Amy had re-recorded because we talked about it.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about it.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: She was like, I think it's Amy, and I was like, no, it's not Amy.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it was.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know, maybe it was.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_01]: It was you.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: Question for you.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_01]: Did you end up keeping the sides from your audition of Gilmore Girls?
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: Did you keep them?
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: I know you tend to throw them away.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I kept them for a while because, okay, now going through the process of auditioning on the old days.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_02]: Things are very different now with streaming and I was going to say screaming, but maybe we should.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_01]: It feels that way sometimes.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's all a change quite a bit, but you would audition, say you were fabulous, they want you to come back.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, they were also, and with television, they were filming you while you were
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: reading with another actor and they were sitting there, just so they could remember you.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_02]: So you do a second audition, you know, you're really good, you come into a second audition.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_02]: And then if they really, really like you after they seen all these other people, they will have you come to California, this is what they used to do.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_02]: They fly to California for a day and you would do the same audition for the studio heads.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_02]: And so you'd be even, I think, I remember one of them being on like a little platform stage.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't like a real theater, but doing the same audition I'd done before, and there were maybe two or three other women there auditioning for the same part.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_02]: And then we'd all go home and you, you know,
- 34:22[SPEAKER_02]: And then you'd find out who got it.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I didn't hear anything.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_02]: First of all, I didn't hear anything about a second audition.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_02]: And I know I was really good.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I really worked hard on that.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I knew I nailed it.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_02]: And then I still didn't hear.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_02]: And then I'm calling up the agency and saying if you heard, and they said, no, they're very interested in you, but they're looking at other actors.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_02]: Because at the end, it's absolutely true.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_02]: Because at that point, they hadn't settled on
- 34:51[SPEAKER_02]: Alexis Bladel and Lauren Graham, which is kind of important to the show, so they were focusing on that, understandably, and so they just were letting that go, and it wasn't until much much later, and we were doing this show maybe, we might have even been in our second season before I heard that Amy has said when they kept pushing actors at her to play Emily.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_02]: She said, I have my family, and it was me, but I didn't know it.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_02]: And then finally, when I was about to give up hope on this whole audition thing, I got a call and they said, okay, they've offered you the job, and I'm going, so that's what had happened is Amy said, I don't want to see anybody else, because I like her, and she's going to be doing it.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_02]: But I didn't know that.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_02]: And so I'm going, I don't know what's going on here.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_02]: So that's how it came about that I finally got it, you know.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's like when you meet the love of your life, when you know, you know, when you meet Emily Gilmore, you know, and it was so interesting to hear the dual perspectives on that to see Amy tell the story and then your perspective on the story, waiting by the phone, hearing nothing, all the while you have the part.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_01]: And you think I don't have the part, it was as an actor, it was so reassuring to hear because that happens all of the time.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_02]: Well, if you're really working on it, now I always did, when I want something, you understand where you're getting, but sometimes you just don't understand why you didn't get it.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_02]: And then the worst thing is then you see the person playing it.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_02]: It could be on stage too.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_02]: And you really hate what they're doing, it was so cool.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I guess I guess I, I guess I was just too good, you know, so I don't know, it's again, I'm so into fate and all of that karma stuff that I just go of as supposed to happen and happens if it's not, it's okay.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: That takes us, you know, even back to the beginning of the book, that what is meant for you will not miss you and what is not meant for you will miss you and sometimes that's the start of your story which it was.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and that's good, I mean, we can't do everything and sometimes, I mean, I even remember just and this is a silly job.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_02]: It was a company of a little night music.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't that.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_02]: It was three penny opera.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_02]: And it was a regional theater production.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_02]: And at the same time in New York, some star, I think it was almost like, I don't know, was it kiss or I don't know who it.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_02]: Somebody was doing three penny opera as a little tour.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_02]: And I wanted to be involved, and I wanted to play Pirate Channing, of course.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't
- 37:27[SPEAKER_02]: even get an audition, and then I got this other job that started up, it was a brilliant, it was in Cleveland, which is not exciting, but my God, this production was so good and different and dangerous and fabulous.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_02]: That was this, I was thrilled to be doing it, and at the same time, now I start hearing rumors just in the business that that other three penny opera is horrible and people are angry and people are quitting,
- 37:57[SPEAKER_02]: You see?
- 37:57[SPEAKER_02]: That's it.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: Thank God it missed you.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_01]: Thank God it missed you.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_01]: Going back to Gilmore Girls, you talked a lot about being able to take yourself back to an emotion in the book.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_01]: When you think of Gilmore Girls, is there an emotion that you come back to or a moment that you come back to?
- 38:13[SPEAKER_02]: The whole experience was so, and it was seven years, the seventh year was not fun.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_02]: because Amy had left that she and Warner Brothers were fighting about a contract and they dug their heels in and so she left.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_02]: So she didn't do it and we had people that seventh year kind of, you'll notice it, especially if you watch Gilmore Girls or you'll know the show will.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: We do.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_02]: It just doesn't have, there are some good things in it, but it doesn't have the pop because she has wonderful writers that she, of course, left behind.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_02]: to do her, is best I could, but it's not her.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_02]: So it kind of faltered and that was disappointing because I look forward to those scripts every week.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, so it was like, you know, kind of going, okay, well, we'll do it.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_02]: We'll do it, but it's just wasn't really good.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we totally, totally agree.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think that if you and Emily Gilmore met, that you would have anything in common, that you would get along, and if so, what would you have in common?
- 39:18[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think we have anything in common.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_02]: I, one of the reasons I've said it before, and I've been fortunate enough to play all these wealthy women because the fun about playing the wealthy women is to get to a great close.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_02]: That's really fun to solve about.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I enjoy playing them because,
- 39:38[SPEAKER_02]: I don't like them.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_02]: I don't like those kind of people.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_02]: So the nasty thing I can make them, or the more obnoxious, or undesirable, I can make them the more I jump in.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_02]: And I do find a lot of actresses, and people who might be likely to play that character,
- 39:56[SPEAKER_02]: are kind of lay back a little bit because they're nice people and they don't want to do that.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm going, that's fun.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_02]: You'd be nice.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to jump in there and make her look like who she really is.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I have so much fun doing that.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_02]: So I've never understood why they kind of shy away from it.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_02]: No, she and I would not.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_02]: We would say hello nice to meet you and then go the other side.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_01]: I figured that might be the answer, but I didn't want to assume, okay.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a lot about Emily's history on the show.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_01]: We learn a lot about Richard's family, obviously she is Laura Lies family, so she's really there to kind of set the tone for Laura Lies character.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: But did you ever find yourself building Emily a backstory to play her?
- 40:43[SPEAKER_02]: There was a little bit on Emily, but it's interesting.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_02]: She didn't have much of a past, and so what I kind of created it for her in my own head, because again, that's just an acting thing.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_02]: I, in order to make her a complete person, I had to know who she was.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_02]: She'd never had to hear it or see it on the screen, but I needed to kind of make something.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_02]: And I think she was, you know, she was going to a nice school, and it was probably that time.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's probably just the culture that she was in.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_02]: It was going to college was a lot about finding the right husband.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_02]: You know, so I think that's really kind of the mode she was in and she met Richard and really was very fond of him and he had certainly a great deal more money than she had.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think she was raised in a very middle class family, but a very tasteful family.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's where she came from.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: I agree with you.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: We actually recently did an episode on our podcast about what an Emily Gilmore prequel would look like.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_01]: And we actually kind of went back and forth on what Emily's upbringing looked like.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I said that I thought maybe she would come for more of a middle class family.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_01]: But we thought if she was going to be properly bred as Emily Gilmore would say, for Richard, that she would have to come from money.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: But I have a feeling that might be why tricks.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_02]: In that case, I look at my grandmother who, of course, I played Emily for, you know, really, because Louise, I'm sure you'll know this, but my grandmother was not called grandma.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_02]: Her name was Louise, and that's, if you were three,
- 42:25[SPEAKER_02]: He said, he had to say, hello, Louie.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_02]: You know, she didn't take grandma.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_02]: Part of it was because she was 41 when she first became a grandmother, because she was really young when she first became a mother.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_02]: So she had that, but she was also a very proud woman.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_02]: And very tasteful, even though she had been poor, and she had been through this.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_02]: I can't imagine the humiliation of having my mother when she was 16 years old on married.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_02]: In 1917, oh my god, but she had great taste, and she had very limited amount of clothing, and she had a big wardrobe, but the clothes she had were very beautiful, and not fancy, but just expensive and good.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think that she would have raised a daughter to recognize all of those important social things.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_02]: And to know what was proper and what was not proper.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that Emily was probably groomed on that a bit.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_02]: And maybe she had a grandmother like my grandmother.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_02]: And she said, you just don't do that.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I just told once this is so strange to have to tell this secret, I don't know why.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_02]: But
- 43:36[SPEAKER_02]: I remember when I, and now we were, we were of wasps, really, my mother was, they were piscopalians and my father's family were congregationalists, whatever they do, I guess they congregate.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_02]: And it makes sense.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_02]: She, we went to see my grandparents, which was generally either Christmas or Easter, so typical, like those lines, how to kill more girls, which I, so loved.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I went saw my grandfather, who is a sweet old man, and he was sitting in his chair, and I ran and I jumped up on his lap.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how old I was, but I was pretty young, and I give my big kiss on the lips, and now I settled down on this lap, and we had a wonderful time.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_02]: It was always great.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_02]: And after that, my mother said to me, never kiss anyone on the lips.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_02]: you kiss them on the cheek, you don't kiss it.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_02]: And that was, she was yelling at me, but I knew that was serious.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_02]: Then I, of course, I mean, I come into the real world in New York and with dancers and people are always kissing each other on the lips.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought, my goodness, my mother, you know, but that's what somehow she was taught.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_01]: On the topic of everything you brought to the character of Emily, if there ever was an Emily Gilmore prequel, what would you want to learn about Emily?
- 44:51[SPEAKER_02]: Ha, I haven't ever really given that kind of thought.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_02]: You'd want to know that she was a her intelligence was there, and that she was actually a good student, but that her expectation from her family and her parents was to find the right husband, because I would want her to have gone to a very good school, a very good college, so that we could find the right people for her to start to congregate with.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_01]: Um, as far as I was going to say, the congregationalists.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_02]: I've never actually given a lot of thought about her life before say college.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that would be a really interesting place to start with her.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_01]: She's going to college.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: You kind of learn as the series is progressing, what she learned from her mother, perhaps her grandmother.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then from there, you see her meet Richard, what that was like, especially if she comes from a middle class background.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_01]: I just think it would be so fascinating, because I know a lot of people ask about another revival and about more Gilmore girls.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_01]: But we actually think, and we've heard a lot of rumblings online about it actually being very fascinating to see a prequel.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that if there was one, an Emily Gilmore prequel would be the way that would be fun.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's a, except I can't fly it.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_01]: That is true, and that is a heartbreaking part of it.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_01]: We asked, you know, a fan casting who would have been somebody said, well, we just have to put Kelly Bishop in a time machine and take her back to when she gets late.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate that.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_02]: I can use one right now.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you could play her grandmother who tells her not to kiss anyone on the lips or or like a like a ghost I think that's something.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, okay.
- 46:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's go with ghosts.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go with ghosts.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_01]: I love it But speaking of more Gilmore girls there was just an announcement that there is an official Gilmore girl's documentary that is coming out Which we are all I mean I'm very excited about
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: Can we ask if you are involved in any way?
- 47:00[SPEAKER_02]: I have not done anything with them yet.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_02]: I, as I understand and talking to my soul daughter, Lauren, she and Amy did a couple of days of recording with them and I think they actually went up to Connecticut to the place where stars saw, I mean, where the in, what's the in, right, right, right, right, right.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I think she told me that they also taped something at a little bar someplace in that town that would be, or a little, uh, diner.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_02]: Like Luke's diner, that's what she said, but now I haven't heard anything else and they were doing some stuff in L.A. And they wanted me to fly to L.A. and do it there and I've got some other things coming up, not unlike this.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_02]: More like fan fest things again for.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_02]: Give a whirl.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_02]: And I've got so much going on that,
- 47:56[SPEAKER_02]: It would get very complicated for me then to fly the L.A. and do that and get back.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_02]: And it gets tiring.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_02]: It gets hard.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_02]: And then, of course, the next thing I always think about is, then I have to bring another outfit.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: So we have a little section that we'd like to do like a little rapid fire.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's called Life's Short.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_01]: Answer Fast.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_01]: So Haley, do you want to take that away?
- 48:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that's why you have the first one.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_00]: The first one is Dean Jess or Logan.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know that that was how.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know that was a competition.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_02]: I realized I really didn't.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_02]: Until I started doing the books saying, I'm like, well, you know, the what the what the what the what?
- 48:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_02]: No, no, I like them all, but yeah, I like math.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_02]: You love math.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_02]: Give it up for Logan.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_00]: And next one is coffee or martini.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, martinis.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_00]: Would you rather film a star's hollow scene or a Friday night dinner scene?
- 48:52[SPEAKER_02]: How about a Friday night dinner?
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: What would your order be at Luke's?
- 48:59[SPEAKER_02]: At Luke's?
- 49:00[SPEAKER_02]: A coffee.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_02]: Just a coffee.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_02]: Just a coffee.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_01]: Just a coffee.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_01]: See, you're more of a suky girl.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_01]: Is that, would you prefer suky's cooking over Luke's?
- 49:11[SPEAKER_02]: Over Luke's?
- 49:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_02]: I want some fine dining.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_00]: That makes sense.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_00]: And the last one is, what is your favorite Emily Gilmore line?
- 49:21[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I know what you, everybody in the world likes that, that one about, drive me to Reno.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_02]: Ah, yeah.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_01]: We do, we do, we do.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: But it doesn't have to be that.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't have to be that.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like, well, and I'm embarrassed to tell you, I can't remember most of them.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_02]: It was so long ago, and you kind of forget lines as you say them.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_02]: favorite scenes or shows, but I don't necessarily have favorite lines, so my favorite show was the one what I call my Tennessee Williams show when when Richard's mother died and when he was finding her things, she'd written a note to him to say not to marry me.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I spent the next several days on a binge.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, come on, I was drinking during the day.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's why I said, yeah, iconic.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_02]: That when I had great fun too, I had love doing that.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_02]: It was just funny.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_01]: We all remember it very well.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so now we're going to do some audience questions.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_01]: You guys submitted some questions and we're going to read some of them now.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_01]: So someone asked, since you're here in New York with us, when you go to New York, what is your go-to spot?
- 50:31[SPEAKER_01]: When you come back into New York City.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's almost always Joe Allen, the restaurant, you know, it's on 46th Street, don't all go at once.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_00]: We're all going after.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_02]: No, it's just kind of an actor's bar and it doesn't have a very exciting menu, but the food is good and we all just know you just say Joe Allen and
- 50:50[SPEAKER_02]: there's another place as far as I after as far as there's probably new ones these states but it was was always sardies but i think sardies is closed and right now temporarily they're gonna open up yes they're gonna reopen that was the place i mean but you need a little more money so joe balance was always the place yeah what was your favorite scene to shoot with Edward Herman that's hard
- 51:11[SPEAKER_02]: I think actually the first, I'm not the second time because I didn't, that was that year seven and I didn't like it, but it was the first time he got sick, I mean he had a heart attack or he had a heart, he was in the hospital and those scenes and I don't recall the lines at all with him, but he was such a wonderful actor and a friend, it's her mood that show.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_02]: I just loved working with him and I loved him and so I think it was that series of scenes that you know really stuck with me.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_02]: I love the guy.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_02]: He was wonderful.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_01]: I have lost the card but I remember the question I think so I'm going to do the best that I can with it.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I'm saving you, you saved the day.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, my niece is starting her first national musical theater tour.
- 52:03[SPEAKER_01]: What is your advice for a young person starting out?
- 52:07[SPEAKER_02]: Have a fabulous time.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_02]: Have so much fun.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_02]: Do everything you're supposed to do.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_02]: Work your took us off.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_02]: And just have fun.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the one thing is hard as it is and is poorly as it pays until I guess you become a big star.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_02]: But it's fun.
- 52:28[SPEAKER_02]: being and having the privilege of being on stage in the theater or whatever is such a joy that you just just relish it and be very professional, you know, get to work, warm up if you're singing warm up your vocal cords.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_02]: Do as little dance, warm up, do all the stuff, just get in there, be professional and then just let it go and have fun because it's great fun.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_02]: I loved it.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_01]: Fantastic advice.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to end this with one last question, but I'd like to read a little passage from your book, if I may.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_01]: Towards the end you said, writing this memoir has it just inspired me to look back.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's inspired me to look forward to.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_01]: Perpetually enriched and propelled by the reminder that as author John Maxwell put it so well, sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_01]: I've learned that's for sure.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I'd love to know what you've learned
- 53:33[SPEAKER_02]: I learned how much people love to read.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_02]: I used to love to read, and now that I'm getting old in my eyes, I'm about to do Kindle, but I can probably find it on Kindle.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_02]: I bet you didn't think I could.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_02]: I learned a lot about how much people are still reading.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of thought they weren't because of computers.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_02]: in the phones and all the other devices.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_02]: So that's delightful.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_02]: I've learned something at least about the literary business.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_02]: It is so far removed from anything I ever knew.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it was just so exciting when the first time we had a meeting with Simon and Schuster, and it was done by gallery books, which is a subsidiary of Simon and Schuster.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_02]: And we sat at the very long table,
- 54:19[SPEAKER_02]: And it was me, my agent, I guess two agents, I'm not sure who it, and I looked down this table, and it was all women.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_02]: And I got so excited, I didn't say a word, but I'm just looking, it was like,
- 54:31[SPEAKER_02]: And this is marketing, and this is sales, and this is this, and this is that, and I'm going, I love that, this is so girls.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_02]: So, so, so, so, so, that impressed me.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's not uncommon in the literary world.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_02]: I've learned that I love doing these things.
- 54:47[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I really have, I really look forward to these.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_02]: Just sitting down and have a conversation with you guys.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_02]: So, like I did with the book.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_02]: Only, it was a little more personal, but,
- 54:58[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I just really ensure, I love people.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's really what it boils down to, is I love people and I'd like to be around people and I love to make people laugh if I can.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's so much better than if you had a choice between applause and laughter, I'll take laughter any day.
- 55:15[SPEAKER_02]: So I've just learned that I'm really, really lucky like I already thought I was.
- 55:20[SPEAKER_02]: So that's what I've learned to.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
- 55:23[SPEAKER_01]: Kelly, it was such a joy to speak with you tonight.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_01]: Congratulations on the paperback release of the third film of the film.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: What a joyful little evening we had together.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_00]: I know, especially because like, I knew that Kelly Bishop was just such a funny person, but I think one of my favorite things that she talked about was how much she would prefer laughter over a pause.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_01]: My mom that really hit her too.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_01]: She really loved that.
- 55:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I relate to that so much just like making people feel so like joyful, like you said, versus people applauding you and your work.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_00]: I just think that there's something so moving about having that perception, especially or having that perspective rather, especially if someone who has such a storied show girl career as Kelly Bishop, to have that sort of mentality at this point in her life feels so, I don't know, so beautiful.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, she's had a really beautiful life.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so grateful that she was able to share it with us through this book and then share it with us in person and she's so candid.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_01]: She's so real and we just feel so honored.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_01]: I know we talked about it in, you know, before on the day on stage, but we just feel so honored that gallery books chose us to do this.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_01]: It was such a special experience, Lauren and Lucy over at gallery books are incredible.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_00]: and the whole team like what Kelly talks about it's just that like it's all women.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's all working there.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_00]: So totally.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_00]: To get to be a little duo to add to that team, just for one night was fun.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_00]: But the Madison theater also, working with women there and theodore books, which was the provider of books for the evening.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_00]: They were one of the co-hosts.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_00]: Also, ladies.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_00]: It was just women all around.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_01]: But we can't forget the guys that helped us out.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yes.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_01]: You guys can hear us in the video.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_00]: And we can hear us in the comments.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, of course, of course.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was just so special.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_01]: And it really does take a village.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm so glad that my mom was there.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: Your parents were there, but it was there.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: And Nancy was there.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_01]: We had a bunch of friends in the audience.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_01]: And Bestie is too, I know, we know that a lot of you were out there.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: I know that we didn't get a chance to say hi, but it was so cool just knowing that you guys were out there and made us feel safe.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_00]: I know, it's one of those things you look out and like, I see people out of the corner of my eye and they look at me like they know me and I'm like, I know you too and I don't know why.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_00]: And it's because I've seen a senior little profile picture, senior little pig, and then having your name to it is just fantastic.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_00]: But that's the one thing that I didn't feel nervous because I felt like we were walking out into a room full of people who
- 57:57[SPEAKER_00]: We're here to see Kelly, but who all wanted to talk about and love the same thing with us.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:02[SPEAKER_00]: So that was really exciting to feel that energy and to get that.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_00]: But honestly, just like meeting Kelly, what like a cool, just funny person to get to speak to.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_00]: We briefly, they were holding her backstage while the audience walked by.
- 58:18[SPEAKER_00]: And something that was actually cut, thankfully.
- 58:21[SPEAKER_00]: from this version of the interview was that Kelly had a hard time hearing me on stage, and I think it had to do with the feedback from the microphone because I was talking to a microphone.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_01]: They also placed us pretty far apart, which I didn't realize until we saw the video.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we were like, oh, I was very far from her.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_00]: But I was just telling her how I had, like, low frequency hearing loss, one of my ears.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: And so what did Kelly Bishop and I bond over backstage hearing aids, of course.
- 58:47[SPEAKER_00]: And she was showing us how it worked on her phone and she just like everything about her.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_00]: She just feels just so I don't know just like so much fun to talk to.
- 58:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she just is like a little spit fire put her in your pocket carry around all day We love you also giving her the needle point pillow that I worked on love that she loved it the best part about that
- 59:08[SPEAKER_00]: though, is that her agent has shown her the video, the day before, of her agenting in it.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they were like, oh, someone was stitching this on Instagram and I was like, you were like, that was me.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_00]: So that was so much fun.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_00]: I love that she loved it.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I like, knew she would.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's just one of those things, but it's like, you work so hard on it.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_01]: You work, you like, the satisfaction of like, I hope she likes this and isn't just like, oh, okay, thank you.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:33[SPEAKER_01]: But no, of course, we knew she would know, yeah, she's very gracious, wonderful.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_01]: Again, and honest lady, you know, as she spoke to in the conversation, she's not someone who gets like overly emotional about things.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but despite all of that, she still has like a lot of grace.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_01]: She's she's still like there's a lot of humility in her and I also think that she is just so touched by how many people not only love, go more girls, but also love her book and love her career and are showing up and I
- 1:00:01[SPEAKER_01]: It was really cool to see.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: I myself was very nervous for this.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_01]: And it actually didn't hit me until right before we went on stage.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_00]: You were absolutely cool as a cucumber until we were backstage.
- 1:00:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then we went to concierge and I was like, oh, okay.
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't sure what to do.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, do I stand over here?
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_01]: Do I stand near her?
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_01]: She's nervous.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a lot to balance, you know?
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like when we sit here and we have these conversations
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_00]: We're in our room.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_01]: We're in our rooms, you know, but when we do invite someone into the conversation, it's always here via Zoom.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_01]: We can cut things.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_01]: Which, of course, we did like a couple of nips and talks thanks to our editor, Kerry, literal angel for this interview, but not many.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_01]: But it's live.
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_01]: You have people out there, you know, some of whom know us as we mentioned, you know, having listeners and having family and friends out there was amazing, but we also have people out there who don't know us.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_01]: And here's what they're interested to hear this conversation and we're trying to connect
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_01]: bounce off of each other and follow this guideline that we presented for ourselves to keep the conversation moving and also being spontaneous also trying to listen also trying to make sure that like the audience out there that's with us live in person gets what they want while also thinking of you guys and like this conversation also going up and so there's a lot like there was just so many things just like
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_01]: going through my mind.
- 1:01:20[SPEAKER_00]: All the tabs suddenly opened.
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_01]: The tabs were all open and I was like, I literally said to you when we got a stage, I was like, what's that good?
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, did we do a good job?
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot.
- 1:01:32[SPEAKER_01]: And like growing up being on the stage, you would think that that would be like my comfort spot and in some of it is, it's always it is.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_01]: But in other ways, it's like this is such a different experience.
- 1:01:41[SPEAKER_01]: You're interviewing someone.
- 1:01:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have lines, I'm like, I guess I kind of do in the form of questions, but like not not used to having prepared lines going out on stage, having like a clear direction, and this is more doing improv, if any.
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a little more like doing improv.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_01]: And so flexing that muscle is something I haven't done in a while.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_01]: But as the evening went on, I kind of like as I was sitting there, I was like, hey, chill.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's supposed to be fun.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, look what you're doing.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_00]: I will say when I was watching, I felt very present in the moment like I was like watching Kelly the whole time, but watching this back, like reviewing the episode, um, the carry, like, honestly, we didn't cut any content, I'll say, like from the cuts that you said, we just like trimmed it just to aid in the, uh, listening to our experience, the podcast.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_00]: but I was like watching this back and I was like watching it.
- 1:02:29[SPEAKER_00]: I was so enthralled by listening to her and I was like, girl, that's you on the screen.
- 1:02:34[SPEAKER_00]: You've lived this before.
- 1:02:35[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that it can be quite hard to like be that present, especially like just like thinking of everything has to go on.
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think that hearing from her that like how much she likes being on stage and being in front of all those people, that she feels at home there, I really loved that aspect of it, but yeah, I was just so grateful to be there, but it can be, it's a lot.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of expectations, especially because it was going to go on the podcast, like are we asking the right questions to fit everyone's expectation, like the people that ask us the people that bought tickets, the people that are going to listen on the podcast.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_00]: Kelly and like can I get out of my own way enough to just like throw it to Kelly and let her talk because that's really so much of what it was She's so many stories to tell so many so many funny sides to make and my god people ghost
- 1:03:25[SPEAKER_00]: That's really cool, Tara.
- 1:03:27[SPEAKER_00]: I was expecting that.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_00]: That lives rent-free in my mind, poor memory.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_00]: Going to be on my deathbed, playing back, Kelly Bishop, offering herself up to play it goes.
- 1:03:38[SPEAKER_01]: You know?
- 1:03:40[SPEAKER_00]: That was so excellent.
- 1:03:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like just so good.
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_00]: There were so many moments though that I really had to pull back because when she waved up to the sky, it's a high end.
- 1:03:51[SPEAKER_00]: I was like after she had just gotten done saying she's not an emotional person and things like that don't make her cry beautiful things make her cry Like I like immediately like my ice tiered up.
- 1:04:02[SPEAKER_00]: I said don't you cry?
- 1:04:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, don't you cry?
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of like challenged her in my mind a little bit And of course if we had been having like sort of like a conversation like
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_00]: this, I probably don't know, it's so fun to have a friend.
- 1:04:13[SPEAKER_00]: But I had to think about it, it was like, that's a beautiful moment.
- 1:04:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that is a beautiful sentiment that like moved me so deeply, especially as being a fan of hers, being a fan of ads and like, especially like their on-screen relationship and just seeing that.
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, I kind of had to like sit back and be like, oh my god, like what is happening?
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like I know.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_00]: And kind of pull myself together a little bit, because that made me really emotional.
- 1:04:34[SPEAKER_00]: It was one of those things is like, I'm not going to make this about me.
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to let her continue on.
- 1:04:37[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, that's the thing is that this evening, when you said this at the beginning of the night, like this evening wasn't about us.
- 1:04:43[SPEAKER_01]: We were just to facilitate our conversation with this person, which we really wanted to make sure that she was centered in the conversation.
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_01]: So funny, because Brett said to me, he was like, the public system, me really wish that you would plug to the podcast at the end.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, I didn't even think about that, because like that's not what we, I mean, yeah, of course, exposures were a podcast at the plus, but like, Brett being, yeah, being a stage
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_01]: you didn't look at the audience enough.
- 1:05:05[SPEAKER_01]: Your hair was in front of your face the whole time.
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, break!
- 1:05:09[SPEAKER_01]: And he was like, okay, it's such that you would plug the podcast at the end.
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_01]: Just saying as your public stuff, it's like, thanks honey.
- 1:05:18[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:05:19[SPEAKER_01]: But that's really what kept ringing in my mind the whole time as I was just like, this evening is so special for us, but it's not about us.
- 1:05:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's about her.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I want to hear her say as many words as possible.
- 1:05:31[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_01]: But there are a lot of ways in which it was like, oh, if we were sitting down having coffee, just the three of us.
- 1:05:37[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I wanted it to be a very different question.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, yeah, I would have had very different questions, very different banter, I think, because we would have been in a state scrutiny could have the banter.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_01]: But it was all in all, all of those things to say.
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it was still such a wonderful evening.
- 1:05:53[SPEAKER_01]: And we could not be more grateful for the opportunity.
- 1:05:56[SPEAKER_01]: truly.
- 1:05:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, especially I of like we said, Lauren and Lucy from Gallery Books, we're so grateful to them for asking us.
- 1:06:04[SPEAKER_00]: And honestly, very grateful to Kelly for trusting two people that she did not know that like her team trusted to we met just like 10 minutes before you guys saw us on stage.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_00]: And just chatted, told her about our Broadway roots, shared the pillow with her,
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_01]: Made a little real when I told her that I was a dresser on Broadway like lives rent free in my yeah in my brain because it was that look If I could have created to something it was so Emily Gilmore and that she like she was kind of listening to me and then her face softened She was like oh, like her face kind of looking like a little bit.
- 1:06:39[SPEAKER_00]: She was like
- 1:06:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, god you're Emily Gilmore.
- 1:06:44[SPEAKER_00]: It's just you know the realization of like having like those facial expressions or something like you're so you feel so familiar You feel very familiar with because that's the thing is like we feel so connected to her
- 1:06:55[SPEAKER_01]: But again, like, she had to kind of do a little bit of a short pause to her.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:07:00[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm really, I'm really glad.
- 1:07:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that she felt that way at the end, especially just like, if we kind of just stood and chatted at the end there, she seemed very comfortable, which I'm quite glad.
- 1:07:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm really glad with her, her feelings about it.
- 1:07:13[SPEAKER_00]: One of the things that she talked about in this interview was feeling how separated she would be from Emily Gilmore.
- 1:07:17[SPEAKER_00]: She doesn't feel like she's anything like her.
- 1:07:19[SPEAKER_00]: She would not get along with her.
- 1:07:21[SPEAKER_00]: And we posted that as a real and a lot of people were like, I saw Emily Gilmore in her in this book, especially when I was listening to it.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I think there's this conflation between her and her character because she read this book in her voice, Kelly Bishop's voice, which is Emily Gilmore's voice, and the same thing of seeing her make some expressions that she made throughout the night, like not just like when we were backstage, but onstage, there were just so many mannerisms and little expressions that was like, oh my gosh, Emily Gilmore, but like having to realize like, no, that's, that's a Kelly Bishop.
- 1:07:50[SPEAKER_00]: That's like Kelly Kelly.
- 1:07:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's Kelly's life.
- 1:07:53[SPEAKER_01]: But I think
- 1:07:53[SPEAKER_01]: that's the mark of a truly phenomenal actress.
- 1:07:56[SPEAKER_01]: I'd feel the same way if we were standing in front of Lauren.
- 1:07:58[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like, there are parts of, from your tips to God's ears, but with Lauren and Kelly.
- 1:08:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm sure all of them, like, there's because they're so authentically natural at acting.
- 1:08:12[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, their natural facial expressions are gonna come in.
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_00]: And like, that's exactly where it is.
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:08:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I could see that as she was talking.
- 1:08:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there were some things that I was like, oh, this is a completely different person.
- 1:08:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but then I'm like, oh, she's a girl right there, but not in the sense that like I feel like she's Emily it's just like When I said that earlier, I just meant to say like it was almost like the same expression that um when Emily meets Suki She's like
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think we all know that like yeah that that look on Emily Gilmour's face that goes from like pondering or trying to like take somebody into Oh, yeah, it was like But it was really cool also site note you were talking about her reading the book the audiobook I went back that night and I listened to you Amy the Amy it's her it's completely different the thing is is when I
- 1:09:07[SPEAKER_00]: I skipped the forward because I was like, it was that woman, and it wasn't, and that's crazy.
- 1:09:13[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 1:09:14[SPEAKER_00]: That sounds so good.
- 1:09:15[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
- 1:09:15[SPEAKER_01]: The breaking news happening on the stage right now, because she starts it out by being like, okay, I just want to start this out by saying, I'm not an actor, Kelly asked me to do this, and so I'm doing it for her.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_01]: This is ain't a normapaladino.
- 1:09:26[SPEAKER_00]: And they kept that in there?
- 1:09:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, Tara that's create no because like I feel rude calling the actress who narrowed it that woman But it was the other woman the other woman another woman should be calling you the other woman But anyway, I do guess but I just skipped it because like I was like I know this I read it in the book like I don't need to totally into this part of the audiobook and now I'm like kicking myself I only like to get because of what Kelly said she was like yeah, and then any River I mean you guys just heard the conversation yes if
- 1:09:56[SPEAKER_01]: Haley and I were gouped and gagged because when it first came out it was definitely not her honestly she speaks to that.
- 1:10:02[SPEAKER_00]: And what's funny about it though is a hearing Kelli do a name measure of body, you know, impression first of all, but to be like, oh my gosh, have a cup of coffee, I never ever consider that in audiobooks because I listen audiobooks like two times speed.
- 1:10:17[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's like, it kind of sounds like everyone had way too much to drink.
- 1:10:22[SPEAKER_01]: So funny.
- 1:10:22[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's the thing is I remember listening to it and having to take a moment and be like, this isn't Amy, right?
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_01]: No, this is not Amy.
- 1:10:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then at the end, when they did the credits and now this was two years ago, back in 2024, when I first listened to the audiobook, it credited the actress who read it.
- 1:10:36[SPEAKER_01]: So it was definitely not her at the time, but God is a cool, literally was like, she was like, I'm not gonna do it.
- 1:10:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not right for that.
- 1:10:43[SPEAKER_01]: And then she heard it and was like,
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_01]: and Kelly was like, okay, then do it.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_00]: That was the most Amy story I had heard from her.
- 1:10:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like, truly to be like, no, I can't.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_00]: No, I don't have an actress's voice.
- 1:10:55[SPEAKER_00]: No, no.
- 1:10:56[SPEAKER_00]: And then being like, I hate this.
- 1:10:58[SPEAKER_00]: So now I want to go back and listen to this.
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_00]: You should.
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's very funny.
- 1:11:01[SPEAKER_01]: I love listening to it.
- 1:11:03[SPEAKER_00]: I see it.
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_00]: I also loved that this all was happening while she was on Miso.
- 1:11:08[SPEAKER_00]: Kelly had her little Miso appearance.
- 1:11:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I just have how prevalent Amy has stayed in her life.
- 1:11:14[SPEAKER_00]: That's so fun.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Also, Lauren Graham being her soul daughter, like especially because I'm thinking about it because this morning you posted the ME scenes that she should have won for more in Graham, but Kelly should have won as well.
- 1:11:28[SPEAKER_00]: They were fighting.
- 1:11:30[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, they're actually always fighting.
- 1:11:32[SPEAKER_00]: But they're always fighting, but they're always fighting.
- 1:11:33[SPEAKER_00]: From this show, when these mother-daughter have such a horrible relationship that they come away from it.
- 1:11:39[SPEAKER_00]: And she feels like she has a soul-daughter from it.
- 1:11:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, oh, that really just speaks to both of them and they're connected.
- 1:11:45[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 1:11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:11:47[SPEAKER_01]: And going through those scenes last night, I truly was like, oh, my gosh.
- 1:11:52[SPEAKER_01]: I could include so many more Emily Lorely scenes.
- 1:11:55[SPEAKER_01]: I almost included the pilot scene.
- 1:11:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just in this carousel, I know we talked about it in the episode that you guys have already listened to Because it came on on Tuesday, but I also was gonna include the city city and not city city hammers and bells Like why don't you care why have you never cared?
- 1:12:11[SPEAKER_01]: But then Kelly turns back around.
- 1:12:13[SPEAKER_01]: Kelly turns back around and I was just like, oh, I think we got to save this for her
- 1:12:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but the scene between the two of them fighting worries dance is just so, so damn good.
- 1:12:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's so good.
- 1:12:24[SPEAKER_01]: The whole show is good.
- 1:12:25[SPEAKER_01]: I love the show.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_00]: This show is actually really fantastic if you've seen it once or twice before.
- 1:12:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's something I really loved about Kelly too in this.
- 1:12:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, it's the third Gilmore girl.
- 1:12:35[SPEAKER_00]: Is the name of your memoir?
- 1:12:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I know that so much of it, I mean, 90% of it is not Gilmour Girls.
- 1:12:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's really so much about her life and her beautiful story.
- 1:12:43[SPEAKER_00]: And if I was someone in her life, I would try to convince her to write a book too.
- 1:12:47[SPEAKER_00]: Not because I wanted her to stop telling me the same stories that she seemed just so funny.
- 1:12:51[SPEAKER_00]: People just want me to shut up and write a book.
- 1:12:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't think they want you to shut up, but they don't want you to write a book.
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_00]: Just to say.
- 1:12:58[SPEAKER_00]: But to think that when she was talking, like, oh, if you've seen gummore girls before, if you've watched it closely, I might grow.
- 1:13:05[SPEAKER_00]: Every single person in this audience, except for my mom, has watched gummore girls a million times.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 1:13:11[SPEAKER_00]: But she knows enough for me.
- 1:13:13[SPEAKER_00]: We're trying to get on the train.
- 1:13:15[SPEAKER_00]: Can you believe my mom's never actually seen the full show before?
- 1:13:18[SPEAKER_01]: That is still mind-boggling to me.
- 1:13:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:13:20[SPEAKER_00]: because your dad knows.
- 1:13:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, he has, and he loved it.
- 1:13:23[SPEAKER_00]: And there was something that my dad and I, like, afterwards we're talking about.
- 1:13:27[SPEAKER_00]: And my mom goes, what's that?
- 1:13:29[SPEAKER_00]: My dad goes, I've seen it, you have it.
- 1:13:32[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh, the Larry, okay.
- 1:13:34[SPEAKER_00]: I also have to say that during this interview, y'all, I had one of the worst migraines I've ever had.
- 1:13:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:13:40[SPEAKER_01]: It was so bad to the, I had a bad one for days following.
- 1:13:44[SPEAKER_01]: just after the interview.
- 1:13:45[SPEAKER_01]: As it was going on, I was like, oh, I'm not okay.
- 1:13:48[SPEAKER_01]: And then afterwards, I was like, oh, I'm really not okay.
- 1:13:51[SPEAKER_01]: And by the time I got home, I was sitting in bed with Bret and I was like, hi, I am not doing well.
- 1:13:55[SPEAKER_01]: No, but this was stirring.
- 1:13:57[SPEAKER_00]: And it just like started that morning.
- 1:13:59[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know where it came from or why.
- 1:14:01[SPEAKER_00]: But as a before before, we were about to go on.
- 1:14:03[SPEAKER_00]: It was doing that thing where it's like, it kind of feels like your brain is a little bit shaking.
- 1:14:07[SPEAKER_00]: And like, you feel like your head's about to fall through filters and you're like,
- 1:14:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how this is going to go, all right?
- 1:14:12[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and I think it went okay.
- 1:14:14[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's also why it helped you remain calm.
- 1:14:18[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, for sure.
- 1:14:18[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh, I'm in an, I'm in agony.
- 1:14:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'm an agony.
- 1:14:21[SPEAKER_00]: So here we are, live and let live.
- 1:14:23[SPEAKER_00]: But I, I think that even with that, it was like one of the best nights of my life, just to be sitting there talking to Kelly Bishop like that.
- 1:14:30[SPEAKER_00]: I still can't believe that we did it.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_00]: I just added the vlog of us finding out Disney world.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, really, when
- 1:14:36[SPEAKER_01]: Which I, I was like, oh, totally should have told Kelly about it.
- 1:14:40[SPEAKER_00]: I also forgot to show her my martini pinkies and I got for her.
- 1:14:44[SPEAKER_00]: How could I, if you guys are just listening to this, I am talking about my fingernails that I, I got, get more girls nails.
- 1:14:51[SPEAKER_01]: There are so many things that I, I wish I, I,
- 1:14:54[SPEAKER_01]: had said to her, I meant to tell her that like I was listening to her book backstage.
- 1:14:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like we got caught up and talking about dressing and she asked me if I knew someone and so I kind of got sidetracked, but I forgot to tell her something that I talked about on because I would relish into our podcast coverage about the book that I used to listen to her book while like ironing clothes.
- 1:15:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that's a lot of relief.
- 1:15:15[SPEAKER_01]: Like I wish that I had told her that.
- 1:15:16[SPEAKER_01]: Not that it would have made a big difference.
- 1:15:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's just one of those things for the kid I'll think until afterwards you're like, oh, I should have said that.
- 1:15:21[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I should have asked that.
- 1:15:23[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you know, it's just like, yeah.
- 1:15:26[SPEAKER_01]: The rule of decks of your mind just starts going, all the tabs are still open.
- 1:15:29[SPEAKER_01]: You're trying to close them and you're like, oh, I can't.
- 1:15:32[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 1:15:33[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I think that that's maybe something that you build up in your mind a lot.
- 1:15:38[SPEAKER_00]: You think you're going to know exactly what to say, exactly what to do, and I really was just so focused on making sure that the conversation felt like something that all parties involved really wanted that I didn't really think about.
- 1:15:49[SPEAKER_00]: the conversation's offstage because I don't even know if I told her that I loved her deeply, you know what I mean?
- 1:15:57[SPEAKER_00]: Which I do.
- 1:15:58[SPEAKER_00]: Kelly, I do love you deeply.
- 1:16:00[SPEAKER_00]: But if you all have not listened to the podcast before, maybe this is one of your first introductions because you wanted to hear a little bit from Kelly from talking to two Gilmore Girls Obsessed Girls.
- 1:16:10[SPEAKER_00]: We have a three-part episode on the third Gilmore Girl.
- 1:16:13[SPEAKER_00]: If you read it and you were like, actually, I need someone to dive deep into this with me and talk about every detail of this book.
- 1:16:19[SPEAKER_00]: We're here.
- 1:16:20[SPEAKER_01]: That's us.
- 1:16:20[SPEAKER_00]: We're here for you.
- 1:16:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is your first time with us.
- 1:16:23[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome.
- 1:16:23[SPEAKER_01]: We're so happy you're here We did coverage on this book two years ago when it first came out.
- 1:16:27[SPEAKER_01]: We were also in the audience for the 90s Second Street Y conversation that is now the bonus content at the end of this paperback release But also just like welcome to a podcast that talks about all things Gilmore girls all things comfy cozy Books that feel like Gilmore girls films that feel like Gilmore girls.
- 1:16:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we mostly just talk about
- 1:16:45[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what we're talking about, and if you guys have been here for a long time, like again, truly thank you for being here for this.
- 1:16:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my God.
- 1:16:51[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for sticking around.
- 1:16:53[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for being interested in hearing us talk to the point that other people want us to talk to people like Helly Bishop.
- 1:17:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's seriously.
- 1:17:01[SPEAKER_01]: We would not be here if it wasn't for you guys.
- 1:17:04[SPEAKER_01]: So it means the world to us.
- 1:17:06[SPEAKER_00]: I just felt so grateful on my flight home.
- 1:17:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like, all I could think about was just I was like thinking about where I was, like, five years ago, when we were just two girls talking on TikTok.
- 1:17:16[SPEAKER_00]: just yappin.
- 1:17:18[SPEAKER_00]: And now we have a podcast and I'm going to talk to Kelly Bishop.
- 1:17:21[SPEAKER_00]: We can talk about this more in art into the month recap, but I really was very fascinated, something that kind of took us by surprise as well, was hearing her backstory for Emily Gilmore.
- 1:17:32[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 1:17:33[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like we need to dive deep into that in this month's GTC at the end of the month, because there's more to consider there.
- 1:17:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I have a lot to say about that because I was really fascinated by her.
- 1:17:47[SPEAKER_00]: I remember looking at you and being like, yeah, you can see it.
- 1:17:51[SPEAKER_00]: You can fully see it in the footage.
- 1:17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Tara turns to me and she's like, oh my gosh.
- 1:17:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's when like the moment that all the nerves left your body because you were like, wait, I said this.
- 1:18:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a true, because we did a whole, we did a whole prequel, like what if prequel episode about Emily and Richard, and so it was really cool to talk to her about that, and hear her thoughts, and her perspective on what her backstory on Emily Gilmore was, even if it was brief, you know.
- 1:18:18[SPEAKER_01]: Even if it, yes, it was brief, but we'll have more to say on that, because I will.
- 1:18:22[SPEAKER_01]: Oh,
- 1:18:23[SPEAKER_01]: What?
- 1:18:23[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:18:24[SPEAKER_01]: Need to know more.
- 1:18:25[SPEAKER_00]: Need to know more here.
- 1:18:26[SPEAKER_01]: But it was such a delight.
- 1:18:27[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you guys so much for listening.
- 1:18:28[SPEAKER_01]: This is kind of the end of our like build-up to fall because our next episode is on Tuesday, which is the first day of fall.
- 1:18:36[SPEAKER_01]: And we are having our annual, how to have a Gilmore Girls fall episode with a little bit of a twist this year.
- 1:18:42[SPEAKER_01]: As you all know, Gilmore Girls is a show that took place in the early 2000s, which I think people are really yearning for, longing for.
- 1:18:50[SPEAKER_01]: They really want to go back to that kind of analog, small town vibe that's why Gilmore Girls is so popular.
- 1:18:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's why we want to escape to it every year.
- 1:18:58[SPEAKER_01]: So this year's How To Have A Gilmore Girls Fall episode is going to be How To Have An Analog Autumn.
- 1:19:03[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll have more to say on that in the next episode.
