- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like today.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand, Australian youth digital media brand Centennial
- 0:21World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:23everyone. OK, so I know I told you guys, I
- 0:26think it was at the beginning of this year or maybe the end of
- 0:28last year that our schedule for the podcast would be slightly
- 0:32different this year when it came to the breaks that we were going
- 0:34to be taking. So in years past, we have done a
- 0:36big break in the middle of the year, like June to July.
- 0:39And then of course, we do our Christmas break.
- 0:41This year, we're doing one week 1/4 instead of taking like
- 0:44chunkier breaks. So the week that we're going to
- 0:47be taking this quarter is the 16th to the 20th.
- 0:50We will be off because that's actually the last week that my
- 0:52parents are here in Australia as well.
- 0:55They've been here for several months, like visiting us and
- 0:57it's been so nice. So they go home that weekend.
- 1:00So I'm going to spend that last week with them and that will be
- 1:03our week for Q1 that we have off.
- 1:06So just a little scheduling update for you guys there.
- 1:09All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 1:12So the first story that I have for you guys today is that
- 1:15Wendy's, Burger King and A&W have joined the burger review
- 1:20wars in what Annabelle actually dubbed This Morning Burger.
- 1:24Get in. I was like, that's so good.
- 1:25I love that. OK, so if you have no idea
- 1:28what's going on, a couple of days ago I reported on the fact
- 1:30that McDonald's CEO Chris Kozemski posted a video
- 1:34promoting the new Big Arch Burger from the brand
- 1:37McDonald's. And he was like, I love this
- 1:39product, Product. It's so good.
- 1:40I'm going to do a tasting right now.
- 1:42I'm going to eat this for my lunch.
- 1:43He kept calling it a product. People were like, has this man
- 1:45ever eaten a burger in his life? He took a bite.
- 1:48He's like, this is a huge bite. And it was like the smallest
- 1:50bite you've ever seen in your life.
- 1:52And everybody's like, is this man even human?
- 1:55Like, what are we watching? Is this AI?
- 1:57Is this an alien? What is going on?
- 1:58It went viral because it felt, like, so dystopian.
- 2:01It was so cringe, but it was also really funny.
- 2:04So the Internet was trolling him.
- 2:05OK. So now Burger King, Wendy's and
- 2:07A&W have piled on the online troll campaign with their own
- 2:12versions of these burger reviews.
- 2:14OK, So Burger King's North American president Tom Curtis,
- 2:18posted a video of himself enthusiastically eating a
- 2:20Whopper. He went like, in on this bite
- 2:23and he got, like, Mayo on his face and he's like, only one
- 2:26thing missing a napkin. He didn't mention McDonald's in
- 2:29this review, but we all knew what he was mocking, what he was
- 2:32trying to do here. And then Wendy's joined in.
- 2:35So they posted a video on LinkedIn of its U.S.
- 2:37President eating one of their burgers.
- 2:39Captioned. Lots of chatter this week about
- 2:41burgers. Thought we'd remind everyone
- 2:44what fresh never frozen taste like.
- 2:47And then they reposted it on X with the caption this is what it
- 2:52looks like when you don't have to pretend to like your quote UN
- 2:55quote product. Savage Wendy's is always savage.
- 2:57Like they are chronically online.
- 2:59They are one of like the OG brands to be chronically online.
- 3:02So I accept this from that because that is so savage and so
- 3:05funny and it's like actually in line with their online personal
- 3:08brand. And then A&W also released their
- 3:10own video mocking the situation. It featured Alan, the A&W guy.
- 3:14He was wearing a blue Oxford shirt and a light sweater, which
- 3:17was similar to what the CEO of McDonald's was wearing in his
- 3:20video. And he said about their teen
- 3:22burger, which is what he was eating.
- 3:24We love this product. I'm loving this opportunistic
- 3:27marketing. This is the kind of Internet
- 3:30drama that I want to see. Giant corporations capitalizing
- 3:33on each other's misfortunes, each other's cringe content, and
- 3:37making the executive team be front and center in this
- 3:41content, in these feuds. Like that's what I want to see.
- 3:44I'm loving this. Oh my God, that's literally the
- 3:47McDonald's slogan. Sorry, I didn't even mean to say
- 3:50that. OK, the next word that I have
- 3:51for you guys today, this is actually a little bit more like
- 3:54mini tech adjacent, but it just came across my desk this morning
- 3:57and I was like, I need to cover this because I want to hear your
- 3:59guys's opinion on this. So there's a post from Sub Stack
- 4:02going viral right now about the death of streaming.
- 4:06The article is by Joel Guevea and he was inspired to write it
- 4:09after music industry legend Ivine, who was the cofounder of
- 4:13Interscope and the creator of Beats by Dre, made the bold
- 4:16claim recently that streaming services are quote minutes away
- 4:20from being obsolete. So the author, Joel, he breaks
- 4:24down why he thinks that this is actually correct.
- 4:27So I'm going to basically summarize what his article says,
- 4:29what his sub stack post says, and I will of course link it
- 4:32down below so you guys can read it yourselves and then let me
- 4:35know what you guys think about this.
- 4:36OK, so he talks about how for most of history, record labels
- 4:40didn't just own the copyrights of the music, but they also
- 4:43owned the hardware that played music.
- 4:45So for example, Philips helped create the cassette, Sony helped
- 4:49create the CD, things like that. Now, labels are entirely
- 4:53dependent on these third party giants like Apple, Google,
- 4:57Amazon and Spotify, who own the algorithms and the hardware.
- 5:00And next, he talks about how music has become devalued for
- 5:04the consumer through this process of music streaming.
- 5:07So he says, unlike video streaming, where, like, you
- 5:10know, you need Netflix to watch Stranger Things, there's nothing
- 5:13unique about subscribing to Spotify or Amazon or whatever.
- 5:17All of these streaming platforms all have the same 100 million
- 5:21songs, which is very different, different than back in the day
- 5:24with physical media where if you owned a CD you had, I mean,
- 5:27first of all you owned it. You owned that CD, but also you
- 5:29had like 12 songs on that CD. That made the experience of
- 5:32listening to that CD much more special and unique.
- 5:35And part of why consumers have kind of devalued, I suppose the
- 5:39experience of listening to music is also because platforms like
- 5:42Spotify and Amazon Music and Apple Music and all of that,
- 5:45they have created this one-dimensional relationship
- 5:47between fan and artist. He quotes Jimmy Ivan in this.
- 5:51He says quote. It's one-dimensional.
- 5:53It's an ATM machine you put your money in, you get your music.
- 5:56They don't do anything for the artist.
- 5:58The artist wants to communicate with their fans, period.
- 6:00And the streaming services are still saying we'll put you on
- 6:03our list if you're nice to us. That's bullshit.
- 6:06And of course, money is always a huge topic of conversation when
- 6:09we talk about the streamers. And in the sub SEC he actually
- 6:12argues that streamers are not making any money.
- 6:14He writes streaming music operates in reverse.
- 6:16Because DSPS payout roughly 70% of every dollar earned back to
- 6:20rights holders labels in public publishers, their costs scale
- 6:24linearly with their user base. Every time a song is streamed, a
- 6:27fraction of a cent leaves the building.
- 6:30This model only works for Apple, Amazon, and Google because they
- 6:33don't need their music platforms to be wildly profitable.
- 6:36Amazon uses music as a loss leader to keep you paying for
- 6:39Prime. Apple uses it to sell $1000
- 6:42iPhones. As for Spotify or any stand
- 6:44alone music streaming company, they're kind of screwed.
- 6:46And guess what? When the platform's margins are
- 6:48structurally squeezed, guess who gets squeezed first?
- 6:51The artists. And of course, this
- 6:53disproportionately effects kind of those mid tier and emerging
- 6:56artists. It's essentially like the top 1%
- 6:58of artists get the most money, which is unsurprising here.
- 7:01So I guess what's next? The author argues that artists
- 7:05need to shift to direct ownership.
- 7:07So capturing phone numbers, building Discord communities,
- 7:10and focusing on high margin revenue like merch and vinyl.
- 7:13Essentially what we've been saying about media and creators
- 7:16and influencers for the past few years, which is like 1000 true
- 7:21fans, like loyal people that will continually show up for you
- 7:25and pay for your stuff and follow you.
- 7:27They are so much more valuable than having like 1000 people
- 7:31that are randomly streaming your music on a road trip.
- 7:33So I thought it was really interesting.
- 7:34Let me know what you guys think about this because I haven't
- 7:36heard anybody articulate or suggest that streaming for music
- 7:41is possibly going to die, but I guess it sounds like from this
- 7:45piece. What I take away from it is the
- 7:47author is arguing it needs to start from within.
- 7:49Like it needs to be almost like grassroots initiatives that come
- 7:52about from those mid tier artists who are like, OK, I'm
- 7:56done with this and it's time to kind of take some control back
- 7:59into my own hands. I would be so down to be in a
- 8:01Discord community for one of my favorite artists.
- 8:03I think that would be so cool. It would kind of feel like the
- 8:06OG Twitter days when celebrities were on Twitter and they would
- 8:09follow their fans and they would actually like genuinely respond
- 8:12to them and interact with them and they'd be in groups together
- 8:14and stuff like that. I know we have seen some of
- 8:18those situations get out of hand and there are definitely things
- 8:22to consider when you have like a celebrity and a fan power
- 8:26dynamic there. But unfortunately, like, the
- 8:28Internet is never going away. Social media is never going
- 8:30away, right? So I feel like celebrities,
- 8:32influencers, artists are going to have to figure out how to
- 8:34operate with like, parasocial relationships and do it
- 8:37appropriately, obviously, and also be able to like, leverage
- 8:41that as a benefit and not take it too far and be weird about
- 8:45it. Colleen Ballinger OK, the next
- 8:47story that I have for you guys today, this is such a random 1.
- 8:51I don't know. I just felt inspired to talk
- 8:53about it. So Selena Gomez and Benny
- 8:55Blanco, they're going viral. Everything we have learned about
- 8:57their relationship, let's just start here, has been against all
- 9:00of our wills, of course. But they're going viral again
- 9:02because Selena kissing Benny Blanco's dirty ass feet.
- 9:07So during the debut episode of Benny Blanco's new podcast,
- 9:11Friends Keep Secrets, Benny Blanco was like lounging on a
- 9:14couch and you could see his bare feet.
- 9:17And they were really dirty on the bottom.
- 9:19Oh, and he also farted into the microphone in this episode.
- 9:24OK, so people were like, actually, what the hell, Selena
- 9:28Gomez? Like, this is who you're married
- 9:29to. And obviously he was like joking
- 9:31around, but people were really grossed out by their dirty feet.
- 9:34People were like telling her to divorce him.
- 9:36That's that's dramatic. OK.
- 9:37People were commenting like, I can't believe she lets him touch
- 9:39her. Literally.
- 9:40Why would she marry him out of all the men in the world?
- 9:44Benny Blanco then defended himself.
- 9:46He said that dust and dirt had been tracked across the floors
- 9:49of their studio where they were recording this by the crew
- 9:52moving equipment. And then Selena was the guest on
- 9:56the next episode. And at the end of the episode,
- 9:58she leans over and kisses his feet on camera.
- 10:01And honestly, like they're not clean again.
- 10:03Like they are still pretty dirty.
- 10:04People are commenting like, I never want to be this in love.
- 10:07How can I Unsee this? Obviously that's kind of cringe.
- 10:09I do like that she's clapped back and she's standing by
- 10:12Herman. OK.
- 10:13Also The Dirty feet thing. I feel like people get dirty
- 10:16feet really easily. I don't know, is that like a
- 10:18gross thing to say? I feel like that's not that
- 10:20unusual that the bottom of his feet were dirty.
- 10:23Maybe it's because I live in Australia and I've never done
- 10:25this myself, but people walk around barefoot here like all
- 10:28the time. I'm not even kidding.
- 10:29You will go to like a grocery store in a random suburb in
- 10:33Sydney. It's not even like a Beachy
- 10:34suburb, OK. You'll go to like a mainstream
- 10:36grocery store, a mall, and people are walking around
- 10:38barefoot. Like, people go barefoot here
- 10:41all the time. You know, North America, where
- 10:43it's like no shoes, no shirt, no service.
- 10:46Like those signs are everywhere around, like beach communities
- 10:49or something. No, you would never see that
- 10:51here. People walk around without shoes
- 10:53on all the time. So I feel like that's
- 10:55conditioned me to expect that the bottom of someone's feet are
- 10:59usually really dirty. I didn't think that was like so
- 11:02crazy. I think it's kind of gross to
- 11:03see on camera, I guess, especially like a professional
- 11:05podcast like this and Selena kissing his feet.
- 11:07I would literally never kiss Sean's feet.
- 11:11Oh, I would never kiss someone's feet.
- 11:13I don't even like getting pedicures because I don't like
- 11:14people touching my feet. I wouldn't say I'm like super
- 11:16weird about feet, but they do kind of gross me out.
- 11:19So you know what? That's bold.
- 11:21But I think at the end of the day, what I want to take away
- 11:24from this story, what I take away from the story at least is
- 11:27we need to leave these people alone.
- 11:29Do I think it's kind of gross and cringe that his feet were
- 11:32dirty and that he farted into the microphone?
- 11:34Yes. Does that mean that she needs to
- 11:36be flooded with comments about how she should divorce Benny
- 11:39Blanco over that? Like also, no, we need to chill.
- 11:42We need to leave these people alone.
- 11:44Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today, a Friday mini
