- 0:07The Cincinnati Reds faced the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium for a Friday night
- 0:10game on June 11, 1982. The Reds entered this game in the cellar of the NL West, something
- 0:16they hadn't experienced in over a decade, having won the division in six of the past
- 0:20ten years and finished in second place in three others. They were managed by John McNamara,
- 0:25who had taken over the team in 1979 after the firing of Sparky Anderson. Los Angeles
- 0:30was the defending world champions and were managed by Tommy LaSorda in his sixth year
- 0:33as skipper, but they were off to a slow start in 1982 with a 27-31 record coming into this
- 0:39game. This audio recording is from the Los Angeles Radio broadcast featuring announcers
- 0:43Vince Scully and Ross Porter.
- 2:13The Dodgers having lost four straight and their home record, and of course you think
- 2:19he's going to have some problems on the road, the Dodgers are six games under 500 on the
- 2:24road. But the big shock is they're not doing well at home either. They're only two games
- 2:28over 500 here at Dodger Stadium. So put it all together and they're struggling. The Dodgers
- 2:33start tonight eight games behind Atlanta. There is Ron Oster, Oster batting right-handed.
- 2:40And Royce out of his stretch, a look at second, comes to the plate of front. Out to get it
- 2:46is Sochette, picks it up, fires to Garvey in time as Say comes all the way down the line
- 2:51to cover home plate. So Oster sacrifices, Milner going to third, and the battle will
- 2:58be Davey Concepcion with a 12-game hitting streak. In fact, Concepcion during the streak
- 3:05is hitting 360. So with one out, Concepcion coming out, hitting 306 for the year with
- 3:1225 runs batted in. Davey has three scoring fly balls, and the Reds would settle for that
- 3:23right now. The Dodger infield plays back, and Royce going after Concepcion. Jerry Reddy
- 3:30delivers a high chopper over the mound. The run will score, bare-handed by Russell who
- 3:34throws to Garvey for the out. Good play by Phil, but in comes Milner, and just like that,
- 3:40the Reds have to drop on the Dodgers, one to nothing. So Concepcion picks up a run batted
- 3:48in, Milner carries it over, and the battle will be Dan Dreeson. One of many things the
- 3:55Dodgers are not doing is coming from behind. That has been just one of many bleak moments
- 4:03for them, and the Dodgers at home this year have not been able to pull one out in the
- 4:09eighth or ninth inning. And here now, they've given up a run in the first inning, and with
- 4:14two down, Dan Dreeson up, and he takes a curve ball and a dirt ball, one and oh. Dan Dreeson,
- 4:19who has picked up over a thousand hits in his career, batting 318, having a big year
- 4:25with the bat. He punches one on the ground to say, Ron Gloves it, straightens up and
- 4:29gets him in the run at home because of the double. And at the end of half an inning,
- 4:34Reds 1, Dodgers coming up. We'll get to baseball rundowns in a few moments. Let's talk more
- 4:39about this Holmes Cooney fight coming up. We had that preview a while ago from Las Vegas.
- 4:45Larry Holmes, WBC heavyweight champ, says the fight is special.
- 4:49One thing, this is a different type fight than it was when we won the title. This is
- 4:55a fight that my kids have to live with for the rest of their lives, for my brothers,
- 5:02for my family. That's why this fight is so important to me. I'm fighting this fight
- 5:06for my family, for my people, for everybody who stands for what's right.
- 5:11And Holmes was asked, what's your fight strategy?
- 5:14No strategy. I'm a boxer. I'm 5 to 5. Left jab, left jab. 70, 80, punch it around. Count
- 5:21it. You can't take it. Not that many. 70, 80, punch it around. Just take 70. You'll
- 5:28be taking away a little away from me. 70 punches around. 50 on land. You can't take that.
- 5:35The Reds and Dodgers pose at the current home stand with games tomorrow night and Sunday
- 5:43afternoon. Tomorrow night it will be Bob Welch pitching for the Dodgers and Greg Harris
- 5:47for the Reds. And Sunday afternoon, Bert Horton will go against Cincinnati's Bruce Bruny.
- 5:52General emission seats on a guaranteed seat basis, available for both games at the Dodgers
- 5:56and the Reds ticket office, 1750 Stadium Wave, and at all tickets on in mutual office.
- 6:01Come out and be with us. The Dodgers and the Reds tomorrow night and Sunday afternoon.
- 6:12The bottom of the first inning, the Reds have a run. We'll set them defensively with Frank
- 6:17Pastore on the mound and Alex Trevino behind the plate. And an infield of Dan Griesen,
- 6:23Ron Oster, David Concepcion, and Johnny Fench. In the outfield, Mike Bale is in left. The
- 6:30counterfielder is Eddie Milner, and the right fielder is Paul Householder, and Steve Sacks
- 6:37will start it off. Frank Pastore, who would just as soon forget last year, he was four
- 6:44and nine after winning 13 the year before. The second half of last year, he won only
- 6:52one game in 11 starts, so he'd just as soon wipe it out. The pitch to Steve Sacks is low
- 6:58ball one, one and oh. John Lowe, the fine writer for the Valley News, who is our guest
- 7:03on the pregame show tonight, points out an interesting thing about Sacks. The youngster
- 7:08with 70 hits this year, he takes outside, hitting 299. He could be a rookie to get 200
- 7:16hits, and that's only happened a couple of times. The last time, Richie Allen. Here's
- 7:23a 2-0 pitch on the way, and Sacks takes inside, 4-3, 3-0. So Frank Pastore, leading 1-0, he
- 7:32is from Alhambra and lives in Upland, 6'3, 205 pounders. Frank into the wind up, now
- 7:41the 3-0 pitch on the way, high, 4-4. Sacks opens up with a walk, and of course, Steve
- 7:51Sacks leading the Dodgers in a lot of things, in hits, runs, stolen bases, and he was tied
- 7:57for fourth with walks, so Sacks has been very busy. He's at first, nobody out, and Kenny
- 8:03Landrow the batter. Landrow, a month ago, was hitting 358. Now he's hitting 275, a victim
- 8:10of whatever it is that chills him after a great start. It happened last year, and he's
- 8:15in the throes of another slide. On deck, Dusty Baker. Kenny waiting, Pastore goes to first,
- 8:21back in there is Steve Sacks. Frank Pastore, his middle name, Enrico. I'm sure his folks
- 8:28were fans of Caruso. Frank, a high step, up around the breastbone, and said to Landrow
- 8:35over for a strike and a count on one. Both the Dodgers bring their hands together and
- 8:39come to a complete stop at the felt. Pastore does it somewhere around the breastbone. A
- 8:46little bit tough, too, to exactly see just when and where, he says. And he's off the
- 8:51rubber, and Sacks back off the back again. Now a throw, and Steve back in standing up.
- 8:57Sacks, among other things, leading the Dodgers in stolen bases. He's stolen 17 out of 22.
- 9:05There he goes. The pitch is a strike. The throw is on a bounce. Alex Trevino has not
- 9:15had the thrill of throwing many people out. One reason, of course, as they always say,
- 9:21you steal a base on the pitcher, as Sacks picks up number 18. In stolen bases for the
- 9:28Reds, the opposition is better than two to one, 44 stolen bases, while they have been
- 9:34able to nail only 20 runners. So Sacks at second, oh and two to count to Landrow, however,
- 9:42and Pastore out of a stretch. Another look at Steve, the pitch to Landrow way inside,
- 9:48ball one, one and two. Kenny, of course, would love to get a pitch he can handle in full
- 9:53to at least get Sacks over to third. Lee Lacey hit a home run in the ninth inning, and
- 9:58Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia one to nothing, hence the call of the over, Larry Christianson.
- 10:06One and two to count. Landrow waiting, Sacks at second, conception on Berg dogging him
- 10:13a little bit, and the one-two pitch is low in the dirt. Landrow, with only 13 runs batted
- 10:20in. So Kenny has had a struggle. Two balls, two strikes to count. Baker, Guerrero, and
- 10:30Garvey after that. The Dodgers trying to snap a four-game losing streak tonight. Joliroyte
- 10:36against Frank Pastore. Now the two-two pitch to Kenny Landrow. Pastore delivers, pulled
- 10:42on the ground to Grieson. He has to throw to Pastore coming over, and Sacks takes third.
- 10:47So Landrow does his job. He got his man over, and it's appreciated. The aficionado is a
- 10:53little bit out of the way. Now Dusty Baker. Dusty Baker hitting 298. He has nine home
- 11:07runs, 32 runs batted in. Baker has been hitting over 300 for quite a stretch. It's like for
- 11:20a month there, he was hitting about 331. And the pitch to him is taken high and outside.
- 11:26Dusty with 32 runs batted in. Guerrero leads the club with 38. So Steve Sacks at third,
- 11:36one ball and no strikes. And Pastore delivers low, ball two, 2-0. Landrow Guerrero, waiting
- 11:46his turn on deck. Tomorrow night, Bob Welch and Greg Harris, and then Sunday afternoon,
- 11:51Burt Hooten and Bruce Berengy. Pastore hasn't won since a month ago when he beat St. Louis
- 12:003-1. For a 2-0 pitch, Baker fouls it away, off to the right upstairs in the count two
- 12:05and one. In his next four starts, Pastore lost three and he had one no decision. Now
- 12:23the 2-1 pitch on the way. Pastore delivers inside, ball three. The Pastore's have a
- 12:29youngster, a son, Frank, who was born almost a year ago while Pastore was pitching here
- 12:35at Dodger Stadium. You might remember that day. It was the 29th of May and of course
- 12:39he was out there pitching and greatly concerned about his wife, Gina. 3-1 pitch, off speed
- 12:45and hit foul, outside of third and down the line. Three and two. So Frank Pastore, who
- 12:54has been with Cincinnati since 1979. Prior to this year, he was a break even pitcher,
- 13:0323 and 23 and right now he's one under 500. Pastore, out of a stretch to improve his control
- 13:10and the pitch to Baker is lined to right and thinking for the hit, Frank has gone back
- 13:15to third and now it comes in to score so just like that it's tied up. So Baker nudged one
- 13:30in the right field for a face hit to get the Dodgers even and that will bring up Pedro
- 13:34Guerrero and of course Steve Sacks making more contributions. First he walked a whole second
- 13:41and eventually came home on the hit. For Sacks, he has now scored 36 runs so he really has
- 13:48been a marvelous offensive weapon for the Dodgers. Pedro Guerrero checking in, Baker draws a
- 13:58throw and gets back. Final score, the Cardinals polished off the New York Mets tonight, 7-3
- 14:05and Duhar beating Randy Jones so Joaquin is 6-4. The pitch to Guerrero on the outside
- 14:13corner for a strike, going one. Guerrero has been hitting although he has not been tearing
- 14:22it up. He's hitting 13 of his last 15. Throw to first again Baker back to the back. Dusty
- 14:32is 6 out of 10 in stolen bases. On deck, Steve Garvey. 1-1 tie here in the first inning and
- 14:40Pastore delivers and what sounded like a cracked bat and the ball is hit foul in the lower
- 14:44deck off to the right and Guerrero looking at it but everything is okay. I think he hit
- 14:48it on the end of the bat and it had kind of a twang to it. 0-1-2 to Pedro Guerrero. 1-1
- 14:56tie. Milner doubled and came home later on as Concepcion grounded out and Baker singled
- 15:02home sacks. Guerrero fouls it back, second deck off to the right of the plate and they
- 15:07count 0-2. No balls and two strikes. Pedro Guerrero and Riesen holding the bag on Baker
- 15:20and Pastore. Squinting in to get a sign from Trevino. Now comes back to his hitter and
- 15:26that hit the right center field and is sinking and will fall for a hit. It's knocked down
- 15:31by Eddie Milner and by the time he recovers and gets it in there are dodges at second
- 15:36and third. So with Ren is at second and third and one out and a 1-1 tie, Dean Garvey coming
- 15:58up. Charlie Lee Brandt will get up in the Cincinnati bullpen and John McNamara goes
- 16:09walking out to the mound and he's walking in a hurry. But Charlie Lee Brandt throwing
- 16:14in the pen and the Dodgers here in the inning with a walk as single and a double trying
- 16:20to break the tie and chase Pastore and the ballgame has really just started. McNamara
- 16:25continues to talk to Pastore so time out for the moment. One of the glaring problems with
- 16:32the Dodgers this year, they get people on base but they don't get them home. For instance
- 16:37when you look at the team batting average it's a very respectable 261. But then when
- 16:43you look at the National League weekly averages it jumps out at you. The Los Angeles Dodgers
- 16:50lead the National League and you know what department? That's right, left on base. Here
- 16:57they are with Ren is at second and third and they lead by plenty. Here's Garvey. Garvey
- 17:04hitting 249 and Pastore delivers that get bowed on the right field line and feeling
- 17:11off and caught by the ball boy down by the top roller. Oh and one to count. So Sacks
- 17:17walks and stole second. Landrow got him over to third and Baker picked him up with a base
- 17:22hit and Guerrero has just doubled Baker to third. Garvey has always heard the Reds throughout
- 17:31his career. This time he left that fly ball into shallow right. Coming in for it is Householder
- 17:37tagging Baker and Baker's not coming. Householder's throw is cut off by Griesen. It would have
- 17:42gotten him. So Garvey can't get anybody home and it's up to Say. Boy I guess Sacks probably
- 17:50is the biggest indictment of any team to lead the league and then left on base. And now
- 17:58here's Say. Ron Say hitting 245. He has five home runs and 20 runs batted him. So Say trying
- 18:18to get squared away here with Pastore. Dodges at second and third. Two out, a one-one tie
- 18:24here in the first inning. That story will now go to a windup. Frank Reddy and his first
- 18:30pitch to Say. Fastball assists the hole. Backhand is by Concepcion. He's cranked up and throws
- 18:35him out and the Dodgers leave runners at second and third. And the stigma is still there.
- 18:41One-one tie. Young is a few minutes away from the first round at Las Vegas. The WBC Heavyweight
- 18:49Championship fight. Larry Holmes eager to show up Jerry Cooney as the glorified amateur
- 18:53remains a solid nine-five favorite to defeat the unbeaten number one contender. Cooney
- 18:59is ready to take the title he says. I've been away from home since November and I didn't
- 19:05come over here to Las Vegas to win this fight. I've been working with Victor Valle, the best
- 19:09player in the world and we've worked quite a long time for this fight. Jerry says he's
- 19:15not concerned with lack of a recent fight time. But they say they have 86 around. Well that's
- 19:21a fight if all I have is 87 that's okay with me. When I get to these fights and I say to
- 19:27ask those questions we're going to have to ask them what I want to do. Come in for the
- 19:31challenger. Holmes is 39 and 0 with 29 knockouts. Cooney was almost 6 foot 6 and nearly a 3
- 19:37inch height advantage and a 12 pound weight advantage after weighing in at 225 and a half
- 19:42on Thursday. One-one tie at the end of an inning. Meanwhile on the scoreboard the Chicago Cubs
- 19:50have failed 5 to nothing, then 5 to 3, then 7 to 3. They came up with 5 runs in the eighth
- 19:57inning to take an 8 to 7 lead. And remember the Cubs have lost 10 in a row and don't you
- 20:03know Montreal just scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning? It is 9-8 Montreal and
- 20:09the Cubs are three outs away from stepping off the pier. John Stone, Moreland and Oliver
- 20:15home run. Santa Monica pier or in the lake. Holy mackerel. The Cardinals beat the Mets
- 20:227-3 Pittsburgh on Lee Lacey's inning home run beat Philadelphia 1-0. Houston San Diego
- 20:28scoreless to the end of 2 and Atlanta picked up 2. Dale Murphy just did his 18th up in
- 20:33San Francisco with a man aboard. American League in a moment. Mike Vail will start it
- 20:39off the right hand hitting left fielder. He'll be followed by Johnny Bench and then Paul
- 20:43Householder and the pitch is flung on and fouled away on one. There in the bottom of
- 20:48the eighth inning California 6 and Chicago 1. Ruth Keaton had a perfect game for 6 and
- 20:54a third innings until Tony Bernisar tripled in the seventh with one out and that led to
- 20:59the White Shots run. Toronto beat Oakland 2-1 Baltimore 9 and the Yankees 4. Kurt Ball
- 21:05fouled away. Boston 6 and Cleveland 2. It is 6 to 5 Milwaukee leading Detroit at the
- 21:12end of 7. 2-2 Seattle Kansas City at the end of 8. Minnesota Texas rained out. Pitch fouled
- 21:23away so it's still 0-2. Mike Vail starting it off. Then Johnny Bench and Paul Householder.
- 21:40Royce looks in to get a sign. Socia wigwagon a couple of times out and Jerry into the windup.
- 21:45Strike two pitch on the way is flung on and missed that ball Johnny. Let's pause for station
- 21:50identification. This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network. And this is the American Forces
- 21:56radio and television service. Johnny Bench coming up. John hitting 220. The boy had a
- 22:09star to fall in. You see Bench hitting 220. Tom Seaver having his problems. Then Ron Say,
- 22:15Steve Garvey struggling. Royce into the windup. Jerry delivers. Fastball hit foul outside
- 22:21a third and the count on one. June the 11th. Kind of a big day in the Dodger family and
- 22:27particularly in the family of Ross and Lynn Porter with Wes and Mindy, the twins, celebrating
- 22:33a birthday today. And of course Ross Jr. graduating from high school today on his way to Pappy
- 22:40School at the University of Oklahoma. So what a day. June the 11th, 1969 for Wes and Mindy.
- 22:46The pitch fouled away. And from all of us, happy birthday to the kids and the heartiest
- 22:51congratulations to Ross Jr. Indeed, indeed. John waiting at the plate. Royce Reddy comes
- 23:00to him and it's grounded foul outside a third. Oh and two to the count. We mentioned it last
- 23:05night. Bench has had some trouble breathing this year. They found a polyp in his nasal
- 23:09passage and he'll probably have to have surgery after the season. Although medication is helping
- 23:14it right now. John tied with Ralph Keiner for 26th place on the all-time home run list.
- 23:26He is 369. Royce Reddy in the strike two pitch, low and inside. Ball one, one and two. The
- 23:32next one he hits with Ty Gill Hodges. He's also up there in the RBI list pursuing penis
- 23:41slaughter. Bench takes the low, ball two, two and two. One away here in the second inning,
- 23:49a one-one tie. The Reds have run on a hit, Milner's double. The Dodgers have run on two
- 23:54hits. But for the Dodgers, second and third and one out. They couldn't get anybody home.
- 23:58The two-two pitch is swung on and missed. Royce taking a lot off and Bench way out in front
- 24:04of it and down he goes. That is seven. Number two, Ralph Keiner for householder. So Royce
- 24:12strikes out two and now the right fielder, Paul Householder coming up. Of course not
- 24:17only the veterans like Bench and Siever and Faye and Darby who are having their troubles,
- 24:22the kids are too. Here's the case in point, a youngster they feel has a world of ability.
- 24:27After two big years in Indianapolis, Paul Householder, he takes the strike. The switch
- 24:32hitter is batting 170. Householder batting right-handed. The strike one pitch to him
- 24:41and a one-one tie. Royce going in to get a sign from Mike Sosha. The left-handed delivers
- 24:55a chopper down to short tough play for Russell. Oh, he short hopped on the run and got him.
- 25:00What a play. That's really do or die. If you miss it, it's going to go on out in the left
- 25:05center. But he came up with it and got him. And at the end of an inning and a half, a one-one
- 25:11tie. Let's update baseball now. Cincinnati and Chicago cubs at Montreal. After two and
- 25:16a half, the Expos two, the Cubs nothing. Al Oliver home run for Montreal, the first one
- 25:21on his sixth of the year. Doug Ford three and six for the Cubbies. Charlie Lee four
- 25:25and two for Montreal. Pittsburgh has defeated Philadelphia one-nothing. Pittsburgh one run
- 25:29nine hits no errors. Phillies no run four hits no errors. The Colby can release the winner
- 25:34four and two. Christensen the Roosier three and four. Attendant and veteran stadium 30,870.
- 25:40Houston and San Diego nothing in yet. Something for Houston. Roller for San Diego. St. Louis
- 25:46leads the New York Mets after one and a half, three nothing. As you are, five and four for
- 25:50the Cardinals. Jones six and four for the Mets. Corner home run for St. Louis, the second
- 25:55one on his fifth of the year starting later. Atlanta at San Francisco. The American League
- 26:01after four and a half at Oakland one, Toronto one. Kingman for Oakland, Clancy for Toronto.
- 26:06After three and a half the Red Sox lead the Indians four to two. Baltimore has just defeated
- 26:11New York nine to four. Home runs Renneke for the Orioles in the first with two on his 14th
- 26:17of the year. Back to back it is. Ripken for Baltimore in the first, nobody on his fifth
- 26:21of the year. And after seven and a half, California in front of Chicago six to one. Again we're
- 26:27going to give you highlights after each round of the home scooty fight as soon as we receive
- 26:32it in thanks to KNX radio in Los Angeles, also APR and UPI radio. Right now let's go
- 26:40to the home second. Dodgers coming up. Out of the second inning one, one time. Mike Socha
- 26:48will start it off followed by Bill Russell and then Jerry Royce. Socha back in the starting
- 26:54lineup. Yeager caught four in a row. And now Socha's turn. Mike hitting 236. He was in
- 27:02there last night and had one hit. He doubled inside first down the line and drove in a
- 27:06run. Socha at the plate and Frank Pastore looks in to get a sign. Right hander into
- 27:14the windup and delivers and the first one is right in the count of one, one. Johnny
- 27:23Bench about even with the bag at third but they're certainly not expecting Socha to try
- 27:27to front. And Mike tired of waiting backed out. Pastore into the windup and the strike
- 27:39one pitch three foul off to the left upstairs fourth level in the count of one, two. Well
- 27:45the Dodgers of course were knocked on their numbers by Atlanta losing three straight to
- 27:49them. The Reds haven't had much luck. They lost three in a row to the Braves at home
- 27:54and then lost two out of three in Atlanta. They're pitched to Socha low. So they've lost
- 27:59five out of six to the Braves. Of course the Dodgers will stop in Atlanta one of the stops
- 28:04on this upcoming road trip. June has been a traveling month for the Dodgers. 22 of the
- 28:1029 games played this month. There is a road. Socha comes one and it's just off the glove
- 28:15of Ron Oster. Oster diving to smother but all he did was deflect it on out into right.
- 28:22And that will bring up Bill Ruckel following the base hit by Socha. Bill Ruckel is having
- 28:36ailing back. Rosalind playing on the Astor serve in Pittsburgh and St. Louis. So that
- 28:42when he came home he just couldn't bend. His pain in the lower back but he said he's ready
- 28:47to play tonight and he's in there. The pitch to him over first light. It was too bad because
- 28:52for a while there he was the Dodgers hottest hitter. He had five hits against the Braves
- 28:58but then the back flared up. The Russell waiting for that story delivers and that's driven
- 29:04into right center so he hadn't lost the touch. Socha is on his way to third on a long single
- 29:13by Bill Ruckel. Charlie LeBrant was going in the first and the Dodgers left run is the
- 29:24second and third and Charlie's up again in the Cincinnati pen as the Dodgers go right
- 29:29after Pastore. First and third nobody out and you have Jerry Royce. Well we'll see how
- 29:34the Dodgers play it. They might have Royce bunt just to get Russell to second stay away
- 29:40from the double play and leave it up to sacks. We'll see. Royce this year has five hits.
- 29:47A double in one run batted in. He has a half a dozen sacrifices and he swings and hits
- 29:54one to bench but there's nobody covering second. Ron Oster couldn't get over to second base
- 30:00looking bunt and bench had to throw to first so it's a swinging bunt so to speak. Of course
- 30:06it is rule of the time at bat. So Royce grounds to third. Russell is at second. Socha holding
- 30:12at third and the Dodgers who left run is at second and third in the first hit. LeBrant
- 30:17is at second and third and one out in the second. Steve Sacks walked all second and
- 30:24eventually came home with a run in the first inning. One away. Sacks with Lando DiBallo.
- 30:33Pastore pitching out of his stretch again. Frank Seth looks at his runners. Now the
- 30:44Dodgers lead to Sacks. The comebackers fear there and the throw goes to first. They had
- 30:48Socha and Socha scores. Whoa did Pastore kick that one. Socha had committed himself
- 30:56and Pastore just went to first and Socha who was anything but fleet footed continued home
- 31:03to score but Pastore should have had him easily. So the Dodgers lead two to one and the batter
- 31:09now is Kenny Landro. So Sacks will get credit for a run batted in and the Dodgers leading
- 31:21two to one as Landro is grounded out in the first inning check in. Two runs four hits
- 31:26for the Dodgers. One run one hit for the Reds and of course Pastore reacted properly. The
- 31:32Dodgers would be faced with another bleak situation of leaving men on base. The pitch
- 31:37to Landro is low ball one one and oh. Pastore again out of his stretch. Looks at Russell
- 31:50at second. Right hander delivers and Landro hits a high drive in a right field. Back to
- 32:08the second. Kenny Landro hits his first home run of the year and in a somewhat bizarre
- 32:27inning the Dodgers lead four to one. Since it was his first of the year you're wondering
- 32:34about his last one. It was against Bob Nepper October the fourth last year. Nepper pitching
- 32:40with Houston. Baker takes in the third ball one. We send along a $50 book of union on
- 32:44autoscript to the Charoptimist Boys Club in Santa Paula. What an inning. Couple of base
- 32:54hits and then Royce swinging away hits the fence but he can't throw to second base because
- 33:01Oster is looking fun and he's racing to cover first and instead of what might have been
- 33:06a double play they only get an out at first. Then the comeback of the man and Pastore blew
- 33:12that play he could have had social. Line drive at Concepcion. So Baker hits it hard but an
- 33:17out and the Dodgers enjoy a three run inning and at the end of two the Dodgers four Reds
- 33:23one. Okay let's find out what's happening at Las Vegas they're underway and Tom Kelly
- 33:28of KNX Radio Los Angeles is at ringside to describe what happened in the first round
- 33:32of the Holmes-Cuney fight. It was an interesting first round it opened with Holmes sticking
- 33:36out the left hand and dancing away from Cooney who kept plotting after him trying to throw
- 33:40that same left hook which he landed about three times but with no great force or effect
- 33:45right toward the end of the first round Holmes landed a punch and it kind of startled Cooney
- 33:50a bit and because of that I had the round even although some of my fellow experts kind
- 33:56of gave it to Holmes I think it was an even round getting set for round number two and
- 34:00we'll be back with a progress report as the fight continues. Okay we'll keep you abreast
- 34:04of course between innings there's usually seven to ten minutes to team at bat so we
- 34:08may have to give you a real rehash of what happened and then go back to Tom Kelly. Earlier
- 34:14heavyweight James Quick-Killis scored a unanimous ten round decision over veteran Ernie Shavers
- 34:19followed with part of the undercard of course to the WBC Heavyweight title fight between
- 34:23champion Larry Holmes and challenger Jerry Cooney. Shavers knocked down Killis the ninth
- 34:27round but Killis came back to batter Shavers in the final two rounds and Trevor Burvick
- 34:32used a powerful right to hammer out a surprising ten round unanimous decision over previously
- 34:37unbeaten Greg Page in a battle of heavyweight contenders. Burvick avoided the long left
- 34:42jab of Page throughout the fight sliding to the side and landing dozens of crunching rights
- 34:48to his head. Page also dancing and jabbing landed few solid punches in the fight. Third
- 34:55inning Dodgers four Reds one and the ball play by play here's Jerry Dodgers. Okay Vinnie
- 35:01for the Reds it'll be Stravino, Pastore and Milner the first three to up here to face
- 35:05Jerry Royce. They now have a little lead to work with. Any Landro's homerun. Back ground
- 35:11out got the run in. Here's Stravino the catcher hitting 284 with no homers and 13 runs that
- 35:18it ends. Stravino came over to the Reds from the Mets in the trade that called George Foster
- 35:24go to New York. Now Royce to the wind up bandit. Pitch on the way to Stravino the fastball
- 35:30up high one ball and no strike. Royce at five and five on the year trying to square it away.
- 35:35Pitch well in his last game against the Cardinals. Here's the pitch fouled out of play. One ball
- 35:47one strike. Royce on Sunday worked six and he gave up two runs and six hits to the Cardinals.
- 35:53The Dodgers pulled that game out 25 to 3. Bouncing ball near second base. Russell makes
- 35:59the play and time for Vinno to retire. So one away and here's Pastore coming on. And
- 36:14Pastore will not bat. Wayne Krenzicki is going to bat for Pastore. Pastore is out early in
- 36:23the ball game. Wayne Krenzicki K-R-E-M-C-H-I-C-K-I. Krenzicki came over from Baltimore. That was
- 36:36a deal for Paul Moscow. Krenzicki bats here in the third inning. Pastore worked two innings
- 36:45allowed four runs five hits. No strikeouts in the walk and Frank Leeds no doubt a little
- 36:52bit upset about that. Pitching at home and coming back and having to leave early in the
- 36:56game. Frank's first game here in Dodger Stadium several years ago. The Dodgers told him for
- 37:01some home runs. That was a memory he just assumed to get. Last year he had that big
- 37:06night when he pitched on his life of giving birth to their baby. Now the 1-0 pitch on the
- 37:12way to Krenzicki. Left hand batter takes low for ball two. Two and 0 to count. So we'll
- 37:18see about a new pitcher. Charlie Lebrant was down there a little while ago and he's still
- 37:22warming up now. Next pitch is in for a strike and it's two and one. Two balls one strike.
- 37:34A third inning and a two and fifth. Chopped away foul out of play. Two and two. Two balls
- 37:41and two strikes and the on deck circle is Eddie Milner the center fielder. Dodgers even
- 37:48the score with one in the first inning and added three more in the second. Big Jerry
- 37:55Royce on the hill ready to go with it. Two two count and a fifth. Chuck him out. My heart
- 38:02on the down goes Krenzicki. The third strikeout for Royce and the batter will be Milner who
- 38:08opened the game with a double to left field and came around to score after a sacrifice
- 38:12and a ground out. Eddie Milner batting 257 to start of the game. Dodgers lead four to
- 38:18one trying to stamp a four game losing streak. So after a four and five road trip the Dodgers
- 38:24come home for seven and now they've got to sweep in order to make it a three four home
- 38:29stand. Breaking ball is down low. One ball on the strike and then on the road they go
- 38:33to San Diego three games in San Diego and a travel day and four more in Cincinnati three
- 38:39in Atlanta and three in Houston. Longest trip of the year. It's about to foul first base
- 38:45side and it'll be a one ball one strike count to Milner. One and one count. Next pitch is
- 39:04a strike and it's a one and two count out of Milner. One ball two strikes and the windup
- 39:15in six. Fly ball to the right field. Dorado coming up for it. A goes right there. Makes
- 39:20the catch to the side we tag. So they're gone one two three in the third and the score at
- 39:25the end of two and a half Dodgers four and the Reds one. Okay we'll go to Tom Kelly for
- 39:31the third and fourth round. A little later but round two here we go. Larry Holmes knocked
- 39:37down Jerry Cooney with a right about two minutes into that second round. Cooney took an eight
- 39:42count then got up. Holmes again dominated the round as Cooney again stayed mainly in
- 39:47mid-ring. Holmes circles and after the flooring again through the majority of those trying
- 39:52to stick the challenger with jazz. Cooney's main thrust was toward Holmes mid-section.
- 39:57There you have it the first round about even. That round of course has to go to home. We'll
- 40:02be back again with more on it a little bit later on. Sunny and warm in Las Vegas as the
- 40:07fight is now in the fourth round. Official national weather service temperature was 100
- 40:12degrees. Holmes Cooney fight being held outdoors at a makeshift temperature. And the first
- 40:19round as it started the temperature was in the mid-80s. Let's update the baseball scoreboard
- 40:24national leg again the Fitzbrick Pirates have beaten the Phillies 1-0. We'll check more
- 40:29later. There are three special attractions on the Dodgers home stands running from June
- 40:3428th through July the 4th. Monday night June 28th will be poster night. A free poster showing
- 40:39past World Series program coverage to all fans in attendance. Wednesday night June 30th
- 40:44will feature a 505 doubleheader between the Dodgers and the Padres. And Saturday night
- 40:48July 3rd is fireworks night. Only general admission tickets on a guaranteed seat basis
- 40:53are available for fireworks night. Make your ticket plans now. A lot going on at Dodgers
- 40:58Stadium. Be part of it. To the last half of the third Charlie Lebrant will come on now
- 41:04for the Reds. Lebrant making his 15th appearance. Two and one is his record on the year. With
- 41:12a 1.74 earned run average. Lebrant is on a sometimes charter. And last year with the
- 41:19Reds was one and one at Cincinnati and four and seven at Indianapolis. Lebrant on the
- 41:24verge of making with a big club but he has been up and down several times to Cincinnati
- 41:28and Indianapolis. Out of Chicago, Illinois six four 200 pound left hander Charlie Lebrant
- 41:35L-E-I-B-R-A-M-D-T. Lebrant will pick first to Guerrero, Bengali, and Trey here in the
- 41:43third inning. Guerrero doubled the right center his last first time up. Pedro hitting three
- 41:5213. He's been swapping a bit so he's trying to get it back together again. Okay standing
- 42:02in. Pete Guerrero batting fourth in the order and Lebrant down into the line. Good turn away.
- 42:08A little high for the ball as Pedro ran up to zip the front but he go by one and 0 to
- 42:13count. One ball and no strike. Now the pitch again. Bring it or miss. A speed pitch and
- 42:24it's one and one. Well Montreal hung around to beat the Chicago Cubs nine to eight and
- 42:31the Cubbies now have lost the 11 straight which is a seasonal high in the league. They
- 42:38haven't won a game since they beat the Dodgers in Chicago a couple weeks ago. Fernando started
- 42:43them on the skid and they're still going down. Simon was the winner and Campbell was the
- 42:49loser. Two on pitch on the way to Pedro. High on the way for ball. So the Cubs now have
- 42:59fallen to 14 games back and they trailed Pittsburgh by six. The Pittsburghs in fifth place so the
- 43:06Cubbies are really going downhill. Pedro takes time for ball. He's on with a walk. That's
- 43:14the first walk. First batter of the late man's base. Montreal has moved into a virtual tie
- 43:26with Philadelphia for a second. Three and a half games back. The Mets are five and a
- 43:31half. Pittsburgh remains eight back and Chicago now 14 back. One on, nobody out. Lee Brand
- 43:42ready to go. Hit and run play. Swing and a bouncing ball. Left field play fifth. Here's
- 43:47Guerrero around on his way to third. He will make it easy. On the hit and run play, the
- 43:52shot stop, broke the cover and Garvey hit it right through the hole. Perfect execution
- 43:58that time. As Garvey gets a base hit, bouncing one to left field. Guerrero winds up at third
- 44:04base and the batter now will be Ron Faye who's rounded the short his last time up. The Dodgers
- 44:10are trying to open this one up and what they really need is a fake lapper. They haven't
- 44:15had any of those for a long time. They've had a lot of tough ones. The way the trend is
- 44:20going right now, they have a chance to get one going. But they've got to keep the attack
- 44:25rolling here in the third inning. Runners at first and third with nobody out. Faye the
- 44:32hitter. And Lee Brand's six. Perky Jook, a high five ball to left field. Should be deep
- 44:37enough to get Guerrero home. As Faye makes the catch and left brings his throw to second
- 44:44base. Guerrero comes across the score and the Dodgers lead five to one on the sacrifice
- 44:51fly by Ron Faye. He makes the catch and left brings his throw to second base. Guerrero
- 44:56comes across the score and the Dodgers lead five to one on the sacrifice fly by Ron Faye.
- 45:02Ronny is 21st RBI. Here's Mike Sosa bat. He's one for one with a single to right field.
- 45:10Walk a single on the sacrifice fly for a run. Five-one Dodgers. We're in the third inning.
- 45:25Okay, Sosa waiting, hitting 236. Lee Brand ready. And the left-hander deals high for
- 45:32a one and oh the count. After Sosa will be Bill Russell. One oh the count. He's trying
- 45:43to move Milner over a little bit into his center field. He's in left center right now,
- 45:48slightly off the mark. Sosa takes a curve ball for second at one and one. Charlie Lee
- 45:55is in the second. Pitching to Mike Sosa here in the third inning. Five runs and six hits
- 46:02for the Dodgers. One-one for the Reds. Now the one-one fix. Fly ball to center field.
- 46:13He hit it deep. Milner has to go way back for it. Now near the track makes the catch
- 46:18for the odds. So Sosa fly ball to deep center field. Two down and the batter will be Russell.
- 46:23Russell has single and scored a run. Billy hitting 266 with two home runs and 19 RBI.
- 46:31So rather promising beginning a walk to Guerrero to hit and run single by Garvey but now two
- 46:36fly ball out. And the Dodgers about to settle for only one in the inning. Let's Russell
- 46:43to keep it going with Royce on deck. Pitch to Billy. In first strike at the knees. We're
- 46:49in the bottom of the third inning and it's five to one in favor of the Dodgers. Russell
- 46:56swings at a thinker and his bat goes flying all the way to third base. And it went beyond
- 47:04the bag and Danny Ozark there picks it up and gives it to the bat boy. So Russell lost
- 47:10the bat. And Billy now ready to go back in there again. Strike two count. Lucky one hit
- 47:20and his hand came right off the bat. Garvey on first. Two out. Lee Brand up with the arms.
- 47:30And the pitch to Russell. Off the glove of Carino all the way to the backstop and down
- 47:34to second base goes Garvey. A turn and holding there. Lee Brand really threw that one high
- 47:39and wide inside. A wild pitch for the Reds left hander. Garvey at second base and Russell
- 47:46trying to pick him up. Billy has 19 runs patted in on the year and is hitting 268. Final score
- 48:01in the American League. Milwaukee with two in the bottom of the eighth inning. Beat Detroit
- 48:05eight to six. Zuckovich over Lopez and fingers got his 12th phase. The one to pitch. Luke
- 48:15in the shallow center field. Miller coming up for it. He's there and makes the catch
- 48:20for retired at the side. One run, one hit, one left on. The score at the end of three
- 48:25innings to play. The Dodgers five and the Reds have one. They're turning out already in New
- 48:31York City to say no to the spread of nuclear weapons. Police figure that a half million
- 48:36people will turn out tomorrow in New York City for what would be the biggest anti-nuclear
- 48:40rally ever in the US. Hundreds of early arrivals are already in the city, including the one
- 48:44baby sees Martin Burshaw across from the United Nations. Those are homemade Tom Toms being
- 48:50beaten by young people from the Onondaga tribe of Indians. There are others here as well.
- 48:56A young man from Japan, a young lady from Canada, part of an international group, only
- 49:01about 10 sitting in Ralph Bunch Park, directly underneath. A sign cut into the stone that
- 49:07says they shall beat their swords into blouse years. They are here a day early for the huge
- 49:12demonstration and march against nuclear armament here in New York City. That's Martin Burshaw.
- 49:18The big rally will be held in Central Park. Argentina claims that British jets fired two
- 49:24missiles at an Argentine hospital ship in the South Atlantic today but missed. President
- 49:28Reagan's back in the White House after ending his European trip.
- 49:31Updeadly, Holmes, Cooney fight round three. Jerry Cooney became more aggressive in this
- 49:38round. Larry Holmes tried to set Cooney up with his jab landing often. Cooney missed
- 49:42a left. The punch he has left are led with throughout the bouts, but he connected with
- 49:47a left uppercut to the chest. He seemed to be working on Holmes' ribs. The two fighters
- 49:52did a lot of moving around in the late part of the round. Tom Kelly will report the next
- 49:57time around, see what's happening at Las Vegas. Right now, let's go back to baseball.
- 50:02Royce struck out pinch hitter Krenchicki who batted for Pastore in the top of the inning
- 50:08and then Lee Brack came on in to take over the pitching. So we're set to go now and
- 50:13Osters stepped in. There's a ball play. Let's go back to Vint.
- 50:16Okay, Jerry, Ron Osters sacrificed in the first inning, moving Milner to third where
- 50:22they picked him up. So Osters foot hitter batting right handed. Five to one Dodgers.
- 50:26The first pitch swung on and fouled away. So Jerry staked to a five to one lead.
- 50:34The end was wind up in the strike one pitch. His round is fouled outside of first and down
- 50:42the line. Bangs off the auxiliary scoreboard and the count O and two.
- 50:46So it's Charlie LeBrand battling Jerry Royce now. The Dodgers five run six hit. The Reds
- 50:57one run one hit. Royce delivers. Pastore fouled away into the crowd behind the Cincinnati
- 51:02dugout and the count O and two. No balls and two strikes to count Osters. Davy Concepcion
- 51:13waiting his turn on deck. Royce into the wind up and another foul ball upstairs off to the
- 51:19right of the plate. So Royce delivers and Osters keeps fouling him off. Final score
- 51:25Milwaukee beat Detroit eight to six and the final score Montreal beat Chicago nine eight
- 51:31and the Cubs have lost eleven in a row. That's the longest losing streak. Naturally the longest
- 51:39winning streak was Atlantis thirteen in a row. Royce Reddy delivers and it is swung on
- 51:48and missed and down goes Osters. Such pause for station identification. This is the Los
- 51:54Angeles Dodgers radio network. Jerry Royce with four strikeouts and Davy Concepcion on
- 52:12the batter. Concepcion grounded out in the first inning to pick up the run. Davy hitting
- 52:17three oh five. Royce into the wind up. Jerry delivers and is off speed and very high. Concepcion
- 52:23ran up and hit the front. One and O to count to Davy. Concepcion with a twelve game hitting
- 52:29streak. Now the next pitch is low ball two two and O. The longest hitting streak in the
- 52:43league Jason Thompson had a seventeen game streak. Let's set you over for strike two
- 52:48and one. Jason the first baseman for the Pirates hitting seventeen straight from the twenty
- 52:53first of April to the ninth of May. Concepcion now has hit in twelve. Here's a two one pitch
- 53:02to Concepcion. Royce delivers found away. With all of these foul balls you get the idea
- 53:08that Jerry's ball is moving a little more than it had been in a while. And with four
- 53:13strikeouts and Jerry is not particularly a strikeout pitcher, his two two pitch on the
- 53:19way. It's strike three called slow curve ball and Concepcion goes down not before muttering
- 53:26to the rookie umpire Bob Davidson. So five strikeouts for Jerry and Dan Brees in the
- 53:34vanity. The most strikeouts in a game this year by a pitcher. Eleven done twice by Mario
- 53:44Soto, Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton. But of course Carlton then the other night struck
- 53:50out sixteen. And here is Breeson and he hits a pop fly. Sacks angles out on the grass and
- 53:57it's an easy inning for Royce who is really pitching now. He's retired everybody since
- 54:02the leadoff double by Milner and at the end of three and a half Dodgers five Reds one.
- 54:14This is the American Fork. This is radio and television sir.
- 54:33Let's check on the fight again. Cooney was more aggressive in round four began landing
- 54:51a lot more. Holmes started the round off with a bunch of jams and landed. Holmes caught
- 54:55Cooney in the chin with a left hook in the first minute. Also in the first minute Cooney
- 54:59connected to Holmes' body. In round five the round was uneventful with the first minute
- 55:04and a half with the round pretty much even. Cooney sent Holmes back a bit with a right
- 55:07in the first minute. Late in the round Holmes caught Cooney on the left side of the head
- 55:11later connected with a right. Let's continue on and see what's happening as we go to Las
- 55:15Vegas. And again, Can-X radio sportsman on the scene Tom Kelly.
- 55:20This is a strange fight just for the looks as though Cooney is going to go down. Cooney
- 55:24comes back and whims around. He was down in round two, staggered in round six, came back
- 55:29and won round seven in the opinion of yours truly and the rest of the so-called experts
- 55:33gathered here. As I don't think Holmes really threw a punch in the seventh round. Cooney
- 55:38busy throwing lefts and rights and like most good fighters once you throw a left hand and
- 55:42keep throwing it right you seem to have the best of the round against no matter who you're
- 55:45fighting. Both of these men are putting on an excellent show. It's extremely warm in
- 55:49Vegas. They're expending a lot of energy and there is a slight abrasion around the nose
- 55:54and up around the left eye of Cooney but it has caused no problems so far in the fight.
- 55:59Right now I've got Cooney ahead by just a point. We're going into round number eight.
- 56:09Five runs on a half a dozen hits for the Dodgers. One run, one hit for Cincinnati. That was
- 56:15Milner's double and Royce has gotten everybody ten due to tie twelve in a row. The strike
- 56:20one pitch on the way is outside and high. One ball, one strike. So Frank Festori worked
- 56:27two innings. It was not his night. They hit for him and LeBrand now is one, one pitch.
- 56:33He's pulled into right field. Eight hits for Royce. So Jerry Royce comes up with his sixth
- 56:43hit of the year and the batter will be Steve Sacks. Steve Sacks has walked and hit back
- 56:58to the box. So Royce standing at first putting on a windbreaker and Sacks checking with Danny
- 57:05Ozark before he climbs in on deck Kenny Landrow who hit his first home run of the year tonight.
- 57:10LeBrand out of his stretch. The left hander delivers and there's a high bouncer over the
- 57:15mound over second in the center field and Royce is going to go to third and the throw
- 57:20to third hits in there as the strike by Ben gets backed up by LeBrand and in the second
- 57:26goes Sacks. I couldn't believe Royce was going to take the extra base and he just didn't
- 57:32get away with it. He's got to be feeling pretty chipper. Nobody out to go first to third on
- 57:38a single to center. Sacks was, Royce was nailed trying to score in St. Louis on a base hit
- 57:49thrown out of the plate. He just didn't make it to third and now second and third and here
- 57:55is Landrow. So the Dodgers leading five to one. Landrow is grounded out and homers and
- 58:03LeBrand delivers in the dirt. A good save by Trevino. Four one, one and oh. LeBrand
- 58:18checking. Now Charlie Sacks. The left hander comes back one oh and there's a line drive
- 58:24in the right field. Base hit. Royce will score. Sacks will stop and on the throw that gets
- 58:34through to catcher Trevino. In the second base goes Landrow and the Dodgers lead six
- 58:36to one. Dusty Baker. Nice field. So Dusty Baker will be coming up. The Dodgers lead
- 58:51six to one. The Dusty Baker will be coming up and in a moment the Reds will get somebody
- 58:56up in their bullpen. Six runs, nine hits for the Dodgers. One run, one hit for the Reds.
- 59:01And with Landrow at second and Sacks at third, still nobody out. And here is Baker. Singled
- 59:08and lined out to short. Left hander Bob Shirley begins to throw in the Cincinnati bullpen
- 59:14and the fastball is low to Baker ball one, one and oh. So the Dodgers scoring in every
- 59:23inning and leading six one here in the fourth. Now the one oh pitch on the way. LeBrand delivers
- 59:29and the big chopper to third then going at the Sacks and gets back to the back. Then
- 59:34he throws to first for the outs. So the run is holding as Baker grounds out. One away.
- 59:39And the batter is Guerrero. The Dodgers left second and third in the first inning. And
- 59:49with second and third and nobody out Baker can't pick anybody up and here is Guerrero.
- 59:53And Guerrero is going to get four. They're going to walk Guerrero intentionally and take
- 59:59their chances hoping to get a double play on Garvey or at least a fourth play. So there's
- 1:00:05the first to four line one. So in a moment the Dodgers will have the bases loaded. And
- 1:00:29Steve Garvey coming up. So the Dodgers leading six to one. They have a golden opportunity
- 1:00:36to break it wide open. Garvey has flying to right and then hits the run single to left
- 1:00:44in the third inning. So Guerrero at first. Landrow at second. Sacks to third. One out.
- 1:00:59Garvey hitting two forty eight. LeBrand will pitch out of a stretch. The left hander ready.
- 1:01:06Set at the belt. The pitch to Garvey is one on a miss. And LeBrand turned it over. It
- 1:01:11acted somewhat like a through ball. Bottom drop out of it. Oh and one. Here in the inning
- 1:01:17Royce single to right. Sacks single up the middle with Royce taking third. He just didn't
- 1:01:22make it. And Landrow single home Royce. Sacks took third and Landrow took second on the
- 1:01:28throw to the plate. And after Baker grounds out they walk Guerrero. Oh and one that counts
- 1:01:34to Garvey. LeBrand set at the belt. They strike one pitch and Garvey takes on one and one.
- 1:01:43The Chicago White Docks didn't win but they had to scare the Angels half to death. The
- 1:01:48Angels were leading six to nothing. And the White Docks got one in the seventh, two in
- 1:01:53the eighth, two in the ninth and fell a buck short. And the next one Garvey can't walk
- 1:01:58it. So Royce Keaton got the win. Docks has lost it. Jeff Corbett picks up a save. And
- 1:02:07now on a 2-1 count time called Bill Fisher going out the mound to talk to LeBrand. Fisher
- 1:02:13the pitching coach for John McNamara. So the base is loaded one out and the Dodgers leading
- 1:02:22six to one on deck on day. Fisher who holds a rather remarkable stat in his pitching days
- 1:02:34of consecutive innings without a walk being allowed trying to counsel his young pitcher.
- 1:02:44Fisher went 84 and a third consecutive innings without walking a batter when he pitched in
- 1:02:49the second. Garvey winds up wings and misses and they count two and two. LeBrand checking
- 1:02:59Trevino. The two fellows who for years have been the spark plug for the Dodgers in run
- 1:03:06production, Garvey and Say. Both men struggling a little bit. The 2-2 pitch just fell over
- 1:03:13the train into the back. Two and two. Garvey with 24 runs batted in and Say with 20. And
- 1:03:23of course the Dodgers as we mentioned leading the league in men left on. And you know that
- 1:03:30if they're leaving that many men on and the fact that Garvey and Say do not have a lot
- 1:03:35of RBIs when given the opportunities, you know that they're two of the culprits. The
- 1:03:402-2 pitch is a little fly ball to right. That's going to be trouble. It's going to run.
- 1:03:46In comes Sack. In comes Landrow. Stopping his third to Rarrow on a blue single to right.
- 1:03:54Garvey and the Dodgers will take it. 8-1 Dodgers.
- 1:03:581-0. 1-0.
- 1:04:13So the Dodgers leading 8-1 now. A little blooper by Garvey. It was hit in no man's land just
- 1:04:19inside the right field foul line and too far back and not high enough for Oslo or Greece
- 1:04:25in to get to it. So 8-1 Dodgers. And here is Ron Say. LeBrand checking. The left-hander
- 1:04:35delivers and Say is to drop all the bench. Yuggles and has to go to first and the run
- 1:04:40scores. John had an easy play at the plate but he couldn't handle the ball cleanly. So
- 1:04:46the Dodgers get another kill and they lead 9-1.
- 1:04:509-1 Dodgers.
- 1:04:59So the Dodgers are not only leading, they are lucky tonight. If you go into the Dodger
- 1:05:05Club house after a couple of their tough defeats, the fellas would naturally take time to point
- 1:05:10out that this blue single and that ground ball that had eyes, well it is coming back
- 1:05:14the other way tonight. Everything they hit finds a hole, a blooper here and ground ball
- 1:05:18there. And a bad play by the Reds. Mike Sosia takes low, ball one, 1-0. The Reds defensively,
- 1:05:28it's not the number of errors they made and tonight they have not been charged with an
- 1:05:34error but they have made four plays. They have failed to execute. The 1-0 pitch, foul
- 1:05:40back, 1-1. The first length that story was guilty of that. In the second inning, the Dodgers
- 1:05:49scored one in the first, three in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth. So
- 1:05:55they are leading 9-1 here with two outs. Sosia single and fly it out and he looks at a pitch
- 1:06:01down and away. 2-1 to count Mike. On deck Bill Russell. It will be a big night for Greg.
- 1:06:18Born in Linwood, the 2-1 pitch inside ball three, three and one. Greg went to school
- 1:06:27at Long Beach City College. He'll be on the hill tomorrow night at Dodger Stadium for
- 1:06:33Cincinnati. He waited a while, 26. 3-1 pitch. Sosia pops it up into shallow right field.
- 1:06:42so they're coming in and the ball is high enough for him to get under it. Ball makes
- 1:06:47the catch and that's a four run inning for the Dodgers. At the end of four, Dodgers nine,
- 1:06:51Reds one. Let's check and see what's happening in the home of Cooney WBC Heavyweight Championship
- 1:06:56fight. Not much action until late in the eighth round. The two men exchanged blows. Holmes
- 1:07:02connected with a bunch of rights to the head causing Cooney to bleed again. Holmes continued
- 1:07:06working the jab on Cooney's left eye. Holmes started dancing again but Cooney again standing
- 1:07:12in mid-ring. Cooney threw a flurry in the second minute without doing much damage. Cooney
- 1:07:16relied on his left. Both fighters were sweating profusely in the 90 plus degree temperature.
- 1:07:22When the round ended, Cooney turned and looked at his mom at ringside. Now for round nine,
- 1:07:27let's go to Las Vegas. On the scene, Tom Kelly. The Nisonese went out of this fight about
- 1:07:3230 seconds left in round number nine when Cooney, the challenger, hit Holmes south of
- 1:07:38the border and so far south of the border the referee Mills Lane stepped in and gave the
- 1:07:43champion a respite of about 35 or 40 seconds in which to compose himself, catch his breath
- 1:07:49and get himself back in condition to continue the fight. Cooney had been the aggressor.
- 1:07:54I thought Cooney won the round but they're going to take the point away from him and
- 1:07:57so we'll put that round in Holmes' corner. The fight continues to go on. The experts
- 1:08:01say the longer it goes the better it will be for Larry Holmes but believe me both men
- 1:08:06are feeling the effects. Cooney remains the aggressor though he's been knocked down once
- 1:08:10and staggered on another occasion. He still seems to be the stronger of the two men. Holmes
- 1:08:15no longer up and dancing but flat footed as they approach and we're getting ready for
- 1:08:18round number 10. We're going to the fifth inning. The Dodgers nine runs, ten hits, no
- 1:08:23errors and the Reds one run, one hit. Mike Vail will start it off if he's followed by
- 1:08:33Johnny Bench and then all householders. Vail struck out in the second inning. So Jerry
- 1:08:40Royce sitting way up on top of a mountain leading nine one and looking down at Vail.
- 1:08:51Jerry Reddy delivers and the breaking ball is right. If you're up on top of a mountain
- 1:08:55looking down on Vail you've got to be in Colorado. Of course and he's in heaven anyway leading
- 1:09:00by eight. Jerry Reddy comes back all one and it's in the dirt. One ball and one strike.
- 1:09:10They're in round 11 of the Cooney-Holmes fight. Eleven of the schedule fifteen. I don't know
- 1:09:20I saw a couple of rounds and wasn't anything going on. 0-2 to count. Mike Vail he's hitting
- 1:09:31two eighty-nine at the start of the game with three home runs, seventeen runs batted in.
- 1:09:35Royce's fastball is high one and two. Jerry allowed the double the milner opening up the
- 1:09:43ballgame and he hasn't given up anything else since the one-two pitch is in the dirt. Vail
- 1:09:48starts the sling and holds up. They count two and two. Royce has retired twelve in a
- 1:09:54row. Of course in the fourth inning he was running the bases. We'll see how he reacts
- 1:09:59to that here in the fifth inning. Two-two pitch coming up. Royce delivers from all back.
- 1:10:07He had a little something on that one. Royce he has struck out five. He struck out Vail
- 1:10:13and Bench in the second inning. Then he got Trinchicki in the third and he struck out
- 1:10:19Ostrand Concepcion in the fourth. Here's the two-two pitch. Hanging on and hits the left
- 1:10:25deep but it is hooking down the line and going foul in the lower deck. They're in the twelfth
- 1:10:37round over in Las Vegas. From the looks of things I would guess it's been a pretty close
- 1:10:45fight. Royce into the windup and the two-two pitch on the way. A busted back-round ball
- 1:10:52to left and that's where Belanger is now for Russell and he throws the first for the outs.
- 1:10:57Another thing for the Dodgers tonight in filing up a nine-to-one lead they're able to let
- 1:11:02Russell sit it out the rest of the way. Johnny Bent is coming up. Bent struck out in the
- 1:11:11second inning. One out, top of the fifth, nine-to-one Dodgers. Royce delivers and is flung on and
- 1:11:22fouled away all in one. Dodgers scoring in every inning and the Reds having that lead
- 1:11:28off doubled by Eddie Milner and nothing else since. Royce is retired thirteen in a row.
- 1:11:33Royce comes back, oh one, and Bent shakes it low. One ball, one strike. John is hit
- 1:11:42and seven out of eight. Royce into the windup. The one-one pitch defense fouled away. One
- 1:11:52and two. Royce standing back of the rubber, thinking over his pitches. Now Jerry up on
- 1:12:06top. On deck is Paul Householder. Royce one-two pitch, then fouled it off again. So to repeat
- 1:12:17during the twelfth round over in Las Vegas if we get any news at all about it we'll pass
- 1:12:23it along to you. Here's the one-two pitch on the way. Fast ball, tap foul off to the
- 1:12:29left of the plate. One and two. The Dodgers score one in the first to tie the Reds and
- 1:12:40then three in the second, one in the third, and four in the fourth. Royce into the windup.
- 1:12:45Here's the one-two pitch on the way. Big chopper to save. Wrong glove, just steps for the
- 1:12:50throw and that'll do it for Bent. The Royce was still out in the fifth. Now has Paul Householder.
- 1:13:02So Jerry has retired fourteen in a row. Householder lost the hit on a good play by Bill Russell.
- 1:13:11Charging a high chopper, he had a short hopper, kind of a desperate measure type play and
- 1:13:16he came up with it to throw him out. Royce delivers and it's sliced to right center.
- 1:13:20Guerrero cruising over to handle it. Fifteen in a row retired by Jerry. He's allowed just
- 1:13:25to lead off double. And at the end of four and a half Dodgers nine and the Reds one.
- 1:13:30In round ten of the Holmes-Cuney fight, here's what happened. Jerry Cuney became more aggressive,
- 1:13:35landing a few blows. Holmes caught Cuney with a right in the first minute and Cuney landed
- 1:13:39a few blows in the first minute, mostly in the midsection. Holmes was trapped along the
- 1:13:43ropes until the referee broke the fighters out of the clutch. Late in that tenth round,
- 1:13:48the two fighters began flinging away. Cuney caught Holmes in the midsection. Holmes hit
- 1:13:54Cuney in the jaw. Cuney's left eye started to close up. Both fighters were tiring. Now
- 1:13:59for the eleventh round, let's go to ringside in Las Vegas and Tom Kelly. There's a slight
- 1:14:03cut in the eyebrow above the left eye of Jerry Cuney. His corner's working on it. I don't
- 1:14:08think it's going to be a factor by the time they decide who wins this fight. Another low
- 1:14:13blow in round eleven took that round away from Cuney. I don't know about Holmes, who
- 1:14:17suddenly looked very strong, might have won the round all by himself. But a low blow,
- 1:14:21and that cost Cuney a point, and a very valuable point it is, as we get into the late stages
- 1:14:26of this fight now, it is very close. Holmes now ahead by a point on my scorecard. He knocked
- 1:14:31Cuney down in the second just to recap for you. Staggered him again in the sixth, but
- 1:14:36in between, Cuney has been the aggressor throughout the fight. He's got Holmes now standing flat-footed
- 1:14:41in fighting, and Holmes looks very much every bit of his thirty-two years as the heat in
- 1:14:46Las Vegas is very oppressive and they get set for round twelve. I'll be back in a bit.
- 1:14:50We'll check in again with Tom Kelly in baseball. Darrell Porter drove in three runs tonight
- 1:14:54to help the St. Louis Cardinals rip the New York Mets seven to three.
- 1:14:59They go to the bottom of the fifth inning with the Dodgers leading a red nine to one.
- 1:15:04They're in the thirteenth round in Las Vegas. Both fighters appear to be pretty tired at
- 1:15:11this stage, and they're not really that much to report on it. The early feeling of those
- 1:15:16who have been watching it say that Holmes, although it is certainly unofficial, but the
- 1:15:21reports we seem to get that Holmes would be way out in front on points. Mark Blandger
- 1:15:27takes high ball one, one and oh. So Blandger, Royce, and Sacks, bottom of the fifth inning,
- 1:15:34nine to one in favor of the Dodgers. Schalke, the brand, and relief for Frank Pastore, and
- 1:15:38the pitch to Mark is high, ball two, two and oh. Blandger hitting two sixty-three. And
- 1:15:52Blandger hits it into center field for a base hit. So Mark Blandger opens up the fifth inning
- 1:15:58with the eleventh Dodger hit. In fact, everybody but Say has a base hit, and Say has a scoring
- 1:16:07five all, and he has two RBIs. So four runs and six hits on Charlie LeBrand and Jerry
- 1:16:15Royce making his way up to the plate. Royce grounded the third, and then single to right.
- 1:16:28When he grounded the third, he was around just a punt. He's around a punt now, and this
- 1:16:31time gets it down. Ben has to go to first base where Ron Oster is covering, so Royce
- 1:16:38makes it to first base. The style of Judges at emphasize. In round thirteen it would appear
- 1:16:45that Jerry Cooney has staggered and gone down. In the thirteenth round he held onto the rope
- 1:16:54with eleven seconds left, but he is a man in dire straits, and they have stopped the
- 1:17:03fight, and Holmes has just defeated Jerry Cooney. They have stopped the fight in the
- 1:17:06left but Cooney stumbled was almost out on his feet and they stopped it before he was seriously
- 1:17:12injured so that's the report. It is over in Las Vegas and Holmes the champion is the winner and
- 1:17:18the fish to see Saks is inside ball one. Cooney's face appeared bloodied and Holmes appeared to be
- 1:17:27pretty much in charge of the fight all the way. The one-oh fish to Saks is swung on and missed one and one. Saks
- 1:17:37walked, hit back to the box and strangled. Steve one for two. Kenny Landrow is on deck. Big night for Kenny
- 1:17:45not only with two hits but he hit his first home run of the year. LeBrandt out of his stretch.
- 1:17:51A one-one pitch to Steve Saks and that's taken low. So with Landrow hitting a home run it would mean
- 1:17:58that all of the regulars except Saks has a home run. Regular now.
- 1:18:10Two balls and one strike to Steve Saks. Dolly LeBrandt delivers a little nub of back to the
- 1:18:16mound. LeBrandt is able to look his man Belanger back and then throw his reason for the out.
- 1:18:22So two down and Kenny Landrow the batter.
- 1:18:29The official time of that TKO is 2 52 of the 13th round and I'm sure they will
- 1:18:35put the notice up on Diamond Vision at the end of this inning. So nine to one Dodgers fifth inning two out.
- 1:18:47LeBrandt looks in to get a sign and Landrow waiting. Charlie at the belt. Left-hander kicks, delivers
- 1:18:54and misses line outside. Ball one on deck Dusty Baker. The Dodgers had scored in every inning. They
- 1:19:00haven't scored here but they have a man in scoring position. Belanger at second base.
- 1:19:06One ball no strike. Charlie LeBrandt ready and the one-oh pitch is a breaking ball found away.
- 1:19:13Landrow hits a curve off the end of the bat. Hit it over near Dusty Baker. One and one.
- 1:19:24Kenny backs out for the moment now back up to the plate.
- 1:19:26And LeBrandt who is in relief for Frank Pastore comes back one one and the fast ball is in there.
- 1:19:31Strike two. One and two.
- 1:19:36Nine to one Dodgers in the fifth trying to snap a four game losing streak. Their longest losing streak of the year was six.
- 1:19:47And the one-two pitch on the way Landrow pulls it foul outside of first and down the line.
- 1:19:52Frank Pastore went two innings but Dodgers scored five times. Actually they four times and then they hit for him.
- 1:20:06The next pitch to Landrow missing ball two. Two and two to count.
- 1:20:09Nine to one Dodgers bottom of the fifth. LeBrandt looks in to get a sign from Alex Trevino and Charlie is ready.
- 1:20:18The two-two pitch to Landrow is taken outside ball three. Three and two.
- 1:20:25Nine runs to the count.
- 1:20:27And Charlie is ready. The two-two pitch to Landrow is taken outside ball three. Three and two.
- 1:20:33Nine runs to eleven hits including a home run by Landrow and a double by Guerrero.
- 1:20:43The three-two pitch on the way is flight to left down the field. Coming in a hurry is Milner but it not only lands it goes all the way to the fence.
- 1:20:51The Landrow will score. Landrow will be in the third standing and it is ten to one Dodgers. A triple for Kenny.
- 1:21:11The ten-one Dodgers will pause the station identification.
- 1:21:14This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 1:21:24So the Dodgers really rolling it up now ten to one having been thumped the other night by Atlanta you remember.
- 1:21:30And Dusty Baker takes the strike so the Dodgers continue to make it look like a telephone number as they score in every inning.
- 1:21:38Here's the strike one pitch on the way and Baker drives it to right center and Milner on his horse for this one and makes the running catch for the outs.
- 1:21:47The Dodgers get a run on two hits and at the end of five Dodgers ten reds one.
- 1:21:52Let's have the final wrap up of that fight from Las Vegas and once again here's Tom Kelley.
- 1:22:01Well the man who claimed he got no respect as heavyweight champion of the world, Jerry, has just gained the respect I think of the entire boxing fraternity.
- 1:22:09When he knocked out Jerry Cooney the undefeated champion of the world, he was the only one left to fight.
- 1:22:16He has just gained the respect I think of the entire boxing fraternity when he knocked out Jerry Cooney the undefeated challenger.
- 1:22:23It will be down in the books about 253 of round number 13 as I'm sure a constant barrage of lefts and rights in the 13th round.
- 1:22:31The debilitating heat in Las Vegas and a champion bent on continuing as champion in the heavyweight division just refused to let the talented challenger take the crown away from him.
- 1:22:41It's kind of a madhouse scene in the ring in Las Vegas. We had Holmes ahead by three points 116 to 113.
- 1:22:48Going into this the 13th round it became very evident soon into the 13th round that Cooney had literally run out of gas.
- 1:22:55The heat, the distance, the toughness of the champion all those playing an important part.
- 1:22:59Not that Holmes will want to go to the dance tonight. Don't misunderstand me.
- 1:23:02He's had a very very tough evening under extreme boxing conditions but he was very much the best man here tonight.
- 1:23:08And he proved if nothing else that he is a champion worthy of being called that.
- 1:23:12He is now without a loss he has 30 knockouts and 40 victories and he retains his title with his 12th title defense.
- 1:23:21He has beaten everybody and in the 13th round carry he literally without stop battered Cooney into the ring ropes.
- 1:23:29Cooney a game tough kid went half way down pulled himself back up.
- 1:23:33And Victor Valley who is more like a father than a trainer with this young contender and challenger jumped into the ring, stopped Holmes and stopped the official and stopped the fight.
- 1:23:43Tom Kelly reporting from ringside again Larry Holland remains the World Boxing Council Heavyweight Champion stopping Jerry Cooney in the 13th round in Las Vegas.
- 1:23:53For the post fight items coming up perhaps a comment or two from Larry Holmes or the trainer.
- 1:23:58We'll keep you abreast of what's happening right now let's go back to the ball game in Las Vegas.
- 1:24:01Here's Ben Scully.
- 1:24:10Final score Kansas City with a run in the 12th inning beat Seattle 3 to 2 Quishenberry over Vandiver.
- 1:24:19We'll have a hitter now coming up for Charlie LeBrand so that means Bob Shirley will be coming in.
- 1:24:30Dwayne Walker will be batting Fort Lee Brand.
- 1:24:36Dwayne Walker.
- 1:24:47Walker hitting 200 he's only had 10 at bat.
- 1:24:53And he's 2 for 10.
- 1:24:55Quite a hurdle you might remember was the opening day outfielder for Cincinnati who failed to cut it.
- 1:25:05And when a hurdle was sent down they brought Dwayne Walker up.
- 1:25:09Left hand batter and Royce ready and bounces one in the dirt ball one.
- 1:25:16Dwayne Walker is from Pasadena Texas.
- 1:25:26He's been in the minors since 1976 swings and grounds one wide at first to Garvey.
- 1:25:31The one to hand to Royce coming over that's 17 in a row.
- 1:25:35Now that takes care of Dwayne Walker and it'll bring up Ed Milner.
- 1:25:40Milner opened up the ball game and doubled the left center field.
- 1:25:50That's the only hit and the only man to get a board for the Reds.
- 1:25:55Royce has gotten everybody since.
- 1:26:02Having retired 17 in a row with two out in the sixth inning he'll concentrate on Milner.
- 1:26:08Double and slide to right.
- 1:26:10Jerry delivers off speed for a strike in the count of one.
- 1:26:16Milner's the fellow who played winter ball in Valenzuela.
- 1:26:19And was recommended by Concepcion to bounce her down to Belanger who throws and got him on a good play.
- 1:26:27Mark Belanger nipping Eddie Milner at first base.
- 1:26:31And at the end of five and a half Jerry Royce is retired 18 in a row and the Dodgers lead 10 to one.
- 1:26:42Okay let's come back and check some baseball scores.
- 1:26:45Again as you heard a while ago and just joining us Larry Holmes remains the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion.
- 1:26:51Stopping Jerry Cooney in the 13th round.
- 1:26:54The fight was stopped about two minutes into the round as Holmes sent Cooney to the canvas for the second time in the ball.
- 1:27:00This is Niner and Cooney when the challenger went down.
- 1:27:03Again we're hoping to have some comments from the fighters or some of the people there at ringside and we'll be checking in in a few moments.
- 1:27:09Meanwhile baseball.
- 1:27:10Bruce Keeson retired the first 19 batters he faced for the California Angels who had to hang on to beat the Chicago White Sox 6 to 5.
- 1:27:18Keeson had a perfect game until Tony Bernisarge won out triples in the seventh inning.
- 1:27:23He was yanked after Bill Allman's two run double in the eighth.
- 1:27:26Corbett finally got the save after Harold Barnes had gotten a hit off of him.
- 1:27:32We'll go back to more scores right now let's go back to the Dodgers game.
- 1:27:41Tomorrow night it will be Bob Welk pitching for the Dodgers and Greg Harris for the Reds.
- 1:27:45And Sunday afternoon Burt Huston will go against Cincinnati's Bruce Bernis.
- 1:27:49He'll have a general admission seat on a guaranteed seat basis available for both games of the Dodgers advanced ticket office 1750 Stadium Way and a ball ticket run and mutual outlifts.
- 1:27:58We'll be with them.
- 1:27:59The Dodgers and Reds tomorrow night and Sunday afternoon.
- 1:28:06We're going to the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:28:08Ten runs, 12 hits.
- 1:28:10No errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:28:12One run, one hit.
- 1:28:13No errors for the Reds.
- 1:28:15The story denied it for us.
- 1:28:17Henry Royce pitching a gem and the Dodgers hitters having a field day.
- 1:28:23Jolly LeFranc went out for the 10 hitters so Bob surely will pick up.
- 1:28:28And in the sixth inning the Dodgers will have Pedro Guerrero who started off.
- 1:28:40Corbett Baranca is now at second base.
- 1:28:43Ron Oster takes over at shortstop.
- 1:28:47And Bob Shirley ready to pitch.
- 1:28:50Guerrero has doubled and warped twice.
- 1:28:54So they get some depth here on the Reds.
- 1:28:57And the pitcher Guerrero mounted sharply to Oster at shortstop and Ronan throws him out.
- 1:29:02The Dodgers get the first man and the hitter is Steve Garvey.
- 1:29:06They can put Baranca in the number three spot.
- 1:29:11And the new pitcher Bob Shirley.
- 1:29:17Ten to one Dodgers here in the sixth inning.
- 1:29:21Garvey tonight bides a right hander.
- 1:29:24And the Dodgers are in the sixth inning.
- 1:29:27And the Reds are in the sixth inning.
- 1:29:30Garvey tonight bides a right.
- 1:29:32Hitter on the single to left and a blue single to right.
- 1:29:35But it knocks in two runs.
- 1:29:43Shirley comes back with a pitch that's fouled away.
- 1:29:46And the count's one and one.
- 1:29:49The one-one pitch to Garvey.
- 1:29:54Shirley delivers low.
- 1:29:56Ball deep.
- 1:29:57Two and one.
- 1:29:58Bob Shirley of course.
- 1:29:59You remember when he pitched at San Diego.
- 1:30:01Two and one to count to Garvey.
- 1:30:04With one away in the sixth inning.
- 1:30:06Shirley delivers.
- 1:30:07Line outside.
- 1:30:08Ball three.
- 1:30:09Three and one.
- 1:30:10We need a strike on the scoreboard.
- 1:30:13And played up by Bob.
- 1:30:15Davidson is trying to correct the press box.
- 1:30:19Three-one pitch.
- 1:30:20Garvey's not ready.
- 1:30:21He backs out.
- 1:30:23Dodgers have scored in every inning tonight.
- 1:30:27Every time you get a game like that, which is rare, where you see a team score in every inning.
- 1:30:34Three-one pitch.
- 1:30:35Garvey takes his life.
- 1:30:37I always remember Charlie Feeney, the Pittsburgh writer, tongue in cheek saying,
- 1:30:42I don't know why, but they only let me cover one basketball game.
- 1:30:46Here's a three-two pitch to Garvey.
- 1:30:48He's felt it, but it kind of hooks out on the line out of play.
- 1:30:51Feeney said, I don't know why the deck was annoyed.
- 1:30:54He said, I thought my lead was a good one.
- 1:30:56He began it in covering a basketball game, scoring in every period.
- 1:31:00Meanwhile, the Dodgers scoring in every inning, leading ten to one.
- 1:31:05Ron Say on deck, and Bob Shirley, three-two pitch, a high drive in the deep left center field, and Garvey has hit it out.
- 1:31:16The field Garvey, in his sixth all-nighter of the year, his last all-nighter was against the Cardinals.
- 1:31:45And we send along a $50 book of Union All-Orders system, a carb home for boys in Los Angeles.
- 1:31:52One and all to counter Ron Say.
- 1:31:55So the Dodgers now are home run by Landrow and Garvey, continue to score in every inning, leading 11 to one.
- 1:32:02The pitch over for a strike, one and one.
- 1:32:05In checking Garvey, we told you the home run is St. Louis, and that means now that's the first home run he has hit here in Los Angeles.
- 1:32:13Here's the one-one pitch, and Say takes five, all-two.
- 1:32:17So Garvey with six home runs, and he reaches the deep left center.
- 1:32:26Shirley ready in the two-one pitch.
- 1:32:28Say hits it to the dead center, and that's where Milner is.
- 1:32:31So that means if Ron is still the only starter without a hit, but he does have a couple of runs batted in.
- 1:32:38And the batter is Mike Socha.
- 1:32:40For Shirley, it's only the second home run he's allowed.
- 1:32:45But Chodo and Sievers have allowed 18.
- 1:32:52And Pastore, when he gave up the home run, the Landrow is now allowed eight.
- 1:32:57Those you say five.
- 1:32:59So the Cincinnati pitchers have allowed 36 home runs.
- 1:33:04Dodgers pitchers have allowed 24.
- 1:33:11Now ball to the right side, and Germany Beranka picks it up and throws him out, and the Dodgers get a run.
- 1:33:17And at the end of six, Dodgers 11, Reds one.
- 1:33:21Now an update from ABC News. I'm John Deggans.
- 1:33:24A ceasefire between Israel and Syria appears to be holding in Lebanon tonight, and fighting between Israel and PLO forces is also reportedly stopped.
- 1:33:31U.S. intelligence sources, however, say Syria has massed some 20,000 troops near the Lebanese border.
- 1:33:37President Reagan arrived home from a 10-day European trip this evening, telling a huge crowd at Andrews Air Force Base his goals were accomplished and that America has the respect of its allies.
- 1:33:46America has a lot of friends in the world.
- 1:33:50Yes, there were demonstrators who didn't agree with some of our policies.
- 1:33:54But I can tell you that in every city, the streets were lined wherever they went with people cheering America and most of them waving American flags.
- 1:34:05President Reagan, Argentina clients, British war clients, flired air-to-ground missiles at an Argentine hospital ship anchored at Fort Stanley, but that neither missile hit its target.
- 1:34:13No reaction to that charge from the British government.
- 1:34:16I'm John Deggans, ABC News.
- 1:34:19Let's update the baseball scoreboard finals in the National League Pittsburgh. Shutout, Clenox, you're one to nothing.
- 1:34:24Montreal outscored the Chicago Cubs 9-8, and St. Louis down to New York Mets 7-3.
- 1:34:30After 5, San Diego is ahead of Houston 3-2, and after 3-1 half, it's Atlanta 5, San Francisco 1.
- 1:34:37Finals of the American League, Boston 6, Cleveland 2. Baltimore triumphed over New York 9-4.
- 1:34:43It was Toronto 2-0-1, Milwaukee 8, Detroit 6, and California beat Chicago 6-5. The next ratings after 11-1-2, Seattle 2, Kansas City 2.
- 1:34:537-10 in a one-sided game. The Dodgers 11 and the Reds 1.
- 1:34:58And before play, here's Gary.
- 1:35:002-10 for the Dodgers. Now Ron Runnickie goes to the left field, so Dusty Baker gets two rest of the night off.
- 1:35:05And here is Ron Oster, who's now playing a shortstop, what German Varancadou on deck, and then Dan Griesen.
- 1:35:13And Jerry Royce rocks into the windup, and his pick on the way is a bouncing ball to third, Sakeham's in, nice play, throws and gutting.
- 1:35:19And that is 19 in a row.
- 1:35:25Retired by Jerry Royce after the leadoff double by Milner. And here is Varancadou, German Varancadou, went into the ball, came for Concepcion in the batting order, and then moved over to second base.
- 1:35:37Varancadou coming on.
- 1:35:44And Royce after that initial leadoff double. Milner opened up with a double, took third on the sacrifice, and scored on the ground out. And that's been it for the Reds so far.
- 1:35:56Here's the windup and the pick on the way, there's a left-hand batter in there for a strike going one.
- 1:36:11Next pitch is a strike, going two.
- 1:36:25Going two counts of Varancas.
- 1:36:28The runner ball is a little high for a ball.
- 1:36:43It's about to pull foul off to the left out of play.
- 1:36:54Two counts still up there.
- 1:36:58We have one out in the seventh inning.
- 1:37:05There's a swing and a foul off his fifth right back into the screen.
- 1:37:19Wind drive is saved for the out. A lunging towards left the hall, that one down for the second out, two away.
- 1:37:29And out of the batter, Dan Griesen.
- 1:37:33Jerry Royce has already picked a one-hitter this year, and it was a first-inning double, given up to Artaud the Astros in a game at Dodger Stadium on the 21st of April.
- 1:37:47Here's the pitch on the way to Griesen, fast ball is in there.
- 1:37:52Second little low, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:37:56Royce trying to regain the form that he had earlier in the year, and the 1-0 pitch on the way.
- 1:38:00Griesen looks to that was a little low ball too, two balls and no strikes.
- 1:38:07Royce made four starts against the Reds last year, there's one and 0 against them.
- 1:38:11And he has a 4-1 record at home this year.
- 1:38:14He's trying to run that now up to five and one. Strikes on a fast ball, two and one.
- 1:38:20Two balls and one strike, we're in the top of the seventh inning, the Dodgers leading a breezy 11-1, they scored in every inning.
- 1:38:27A three-run second to the four-run fourth of the highlight inning.
- 1:38:31Now the two-one pitch. Griesen trying to punch misses, that is strike two, two and two.
- 1:38:37Griesen trying to do what he can to get on base and get something rolling, but the Reds are ten runs behind.
- 1:38:42The Dodgers are out of the field, they're drilled by a set number for Atlanta the other night.
- 1:38:46There's a breaking ball, a little bit low, ball free, and Royce is annoyed with the rookie umpire at the plate, Bob Davidson.
- 1:38:54He came a little side-armed to Griesen that time and thought that he had him struck out.
- 1:38:58A three-two pitch on the way, over the top, bouncing ball over the mound.
- 1:39:03And up with it is Solange, throws the first in time on the side of the side, and Royce is retired 21 in a row.
- 1:39:09And the score going to the bottom of the seventh inning, Dodgers 11 and the Reds 1.
- 1:39:14Good news here for our engineer, the old Kansas Flash Jeff Valdez.
- 1:39:20Mark Moorman and Dave Lucas knocked in two runs apiece, the sixth run Wichita State third inning today.
- 1:39:26The face of Shocker is an eight to four victory over the Longhorns of Texas,
- 1:39:30thus eliminating the Longhorns from the College World Series.
- 1:39:33The sixth run uprising came after the pre-tournament's favorite Longhorns had taken a two-to-one lead,
- 1:39:38and they're half of the first.
- 1:39:41Wichita State pitcher Brian Okers went the distance allowing nine hits and striking out seven.
- 1:39:46Three of those hits came on the first when Texas scored twice on Jeff Herman's single.
- 1:39:52Texas now 59-6, scored its final run on the fourth inning when Mike Livermore led off the inning with a single,
- 1:39:59later scored on Tracy Dover's single.
- 1:40:02So again, the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, Wichita State has eliminated the Texas Longhorns,
- 1:40:10eight to four will now meet the University of Miami Hurricanes.
- 1:40:14They're undefeated in the playoff.
- 1:40:17Jan Stevenson shot her second consecutive three under par 69 Friday,
- 1:40:21grabbed the second round lead from the $200,000 LPGA Championship at Kings Island, Ohio.
- 1:40:28Steven Zunou shared the first round lead with Therese Hezzen and Beth Daniel.
- 1:40:33Ranner's spring of bogeyed lip holes, a 29, grew to a 36-hole score of six under par 138,
- 1:40:40one shot better than Daniel.
- 1:40:44We'll have a baseball update when we come back.
- 1:40:46Right now, let's go back to Jerry Doggett.
- 1:40:48Here's Mark Belanger at bat now to play on the bottom of the seventh inning,
- 1:40:52and he takes the first pitch for the Shirley down low one ball on those strikes.
- 1:40:56He'll land it for his dad's first base for 690, and Johnny Bench is out for the rest of the evening.
- 1:41:02And Belanger tops one foul along the first base line, one ball, one strike.
- 1:41:06Mark came into the game in the fifth inning for Billy Russell.
- 1:41:10He's singled and scored on Landro's triple.
- 1:41:13Landro has a chance to hit for the cycle tonight.
- 1:41:16Here's the pitch outside football, and the count is two and one.
- 1:41:18Kenny has a home run, a single and a triple.
- 1:41:21He'll be up here one more turn.
- 1:41:23He's eliciting an extra day looking for a double.
- 1:41:25Belanger bounces a foul.
- 1:41:27Curveball was in on the fifth and Mark fouled it away.
- 1:41:30Two and two is the count.
- 1:41:33Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:41:35The game is in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:41:37The Dodgers have scored in everything.
- 1:41:40And it's not that poor game losing streak.
- 1:41:49Next pitch.
- 1:41:51He's out of the way, count holding it two and two.
- 1:41:57Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:42:00Certainly delivers.
- 1:42:01Belanger fouls another one back in the count holding it two and two.
- 1:42:04Jerry Royce is out on deck.
- 1:42:08Royce has been absolutely magnificent tonight,
- 1:42:11and he pitched a good game in St. Louis last time out.
- 1:42:14So that brings smiles to the face of Tommy Lasorda,
- 1:42:16who's been a little bit beleaguered lately.
- 1:42:18The Dodgers have been down in the gold room.
- 1:42:20He can get Royce and Utsu spread away.
- 1:42:22That will really be a big help.
- 1:42:24Here's the free two-pitch.
- 1:42:25Mark lines one to left field.
- 1:42:27Coming up the veil makes the catch for the out.
- 1:42:29Belanger hit it hard but right to the left fielder.
- 1:42:31One down.
- 1:42:32And here's Jerry Royce.
- 1:42:33Royce and Wysi are 21 in a row after a leadoff double to Milner.
- 1:42:49Royce is at it, and Royce tonight has single score to run sacrifice.
- 1:42:53He had two hits in his last game at St. Louis, including an RBI.
- 1:42:57Backs away for fastball on the knuckles.
- 1:42:59One ball and no strikes.
- 1:43:01One-oh to count.
- 1:43:03Royce backing up.
- 1:43:06Bob Shirley out of Oklahoma into the windup.
- 1:43:09And the pitch to Royce in there for a strike and it's one and one.
- 1:43:13One ball, one strike.
- 1:43:14Dodgers 11 and the Reds have one.
- 1:43:17And we're in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:43:20Royce swings at a fastball, one and two.
- 1:43:24Surely for a number of years with San Diego, then with St. Louis and now with the Reds.
- 1:43:30The one-two pitch on the way.
- 1:43:32Royce puts it one low inside ball, two-two and two.
- 1:43:35Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:43:38The Dodgers 13 hits on deck of Steve's back.
- 1:43:44Now the two-two pitch, line fouled into the lower stands behind the auxiliary scoreboard in left field.
- 1:43:51So Royce was around late into the two-and-two count still up there.
- 1:44:00Two-and-two to Jerry.
- 1:44:02Shirley ready in the pitch.
- 1:44:04Took him out on a high fastball.
- 1:44:07Shirley gets a strike out his first of the game.
- 1:44:10And as Royce goes back to the bench, a ripple of applause for the fans.
- 1:44:14And here's Steve's back.
- 1:44:16He's walked, rounded out for an RBI and single.
- 1:44:19Sacksy is one for three in the game.
- 1:44:22And his batting average is at 300.
- 1:44:28Sack's at 71-base-if.
- 1:44:34And that leads to the league.
- 1:44:38Here's the pitch for a strike going one.
- 1:44:43Meanwhile, Atlanta is winning easily at San Francisco.
- 1:44:46So the Dodgers not making up any ground on the Braves,
- 1:44:49but they're at least getting a lot of satisfaction of snapping their three.
- 1:44:52Fastball is a strike going two to the countdown.
- 1:44:57Sacksy, 20 RBIs on the year.
- 1:45:02And the pitch.
- 1:45:03Taken outside for ball.
- 1:45:05Landrell has four RBIs tonight.
- 1:45:09And that gives him 17 for the year.
- 1:45:12Bob Shirley working a one-and-two pitch on the way.
- 1:45:15Sack loops a foul into the fans behind home plate.
- 1:45:19And now the one-and-two.
- 1:45:27One ball, two strikes with two men out.
- 1:45:30Here's the pitch.
- 1:45:32Breaking ball right on his belt.
- 1:45:34And a two-and-two.
- 1:45:36Sacksy had to pull out of there on that one.
- 1:45:38That surely gave him a pretty good slider in sight.
- 1:45:42Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 1:45:50And the windup man, the pitch on the way.
- 1:45:53And it's George Stott's hot-file.
- 1:45:55It's turned aside as retired.
- 1:45:57So for the first time tonight, the Dodgers go out in order.
- 1:46:00And the score at the end of seven innings,
- 1:46:02the Reds have one.
- 1:46:04Again on the big fight at Las Vegas on Friday night,
- 1:46:06Larry Holmes scored a 13th round CKO over Jerry Cooney
- 1:46:10to retain the WBC Heavyweight crown.
- 1:46:13The moment in Las Vegas was stopped with eight seconds left
- 1:46:15in round 13 as the Holmes explored Cooney
- 1:46:18for the second time in the fight.
- 1:46:20Cooney got up, cut over his left eye and his nose
- 1:46:23were reopened by a barrage from Holmes.
- 1:46:26Referee Mills blamed and stopped the fight.
- 1:46:28Holmes had retained his crown.
- 1:46:31Holmes sent Cooney to the canvas in the second round
- 1:46:33with a right but thunder challenger.
- 1:46:35Holmes also opened the chest over Cooney's left eye and nose
- 1:46:38in round six and seven.
- 1:46:40The victory is the 40th of Holmes' professional career
- 1:46:42without a defeat, which is 30th by knockout.
- 1:46:46It's the 12th time a 32-year-old fighter from Eastern Pennsylvania
- 1:46:50has descended the crown with 11 of those wins by KO.
- 1:46:53For the 25-year-old Cooney from Huntington, New York,
- 1:46:56it was his first pro-loss in 26 bouts.
- 1:46:59The fight took place at the makeshift stadium
- 1:47:01at Caesar's Colous Hotel in Las Vegas.
- 1:47:04Well, we've played seven innings of the ball game.
- 1:47:08For the Dodgers now, we have a change in right field.
- 1:47:11Darrell Thomas will go in for Guerrero.
- 1:47:14Thomas in right field.
- 1:47:16That change will be made as we go to the eighth inning.
- 1:47:19And the attendance tonight is 37,586.
- 1:47:23And tomorrow night, it will be Greg Maris, local product,
- 1:47:27coming in to the Dodgers stadium to go against Bob Welk.
- 1:47:30And on Sunday, it will be Bruce Perenny
- 1:47:32for the Reds against Virgil.
- 1:47:3511 to 1 Dodgers lead.
- 1:47:36Ain't any more play.
- 1:47:37Let's go back to them.
- 1:47:38All right, Jerry, as some of the regulars being rested
- 1:47:41on each side in this runaway 11 to 1 Dodger game,
- 1:47:46Mike Vail, Ben Raphael Landisoy, and Paul Householder.
- 1:47:53So the Dodgers were scrambled by Atlanta 11 to 5,
- 1:47:56and now they come back to knock the wheels off the Reds 11 to 1.
- 1:48:02Mike Vail stuck it out and ground it out.
- 1:48:05Waves at a pitch and doesn't get it 0 and 1.
- 1:48:11The Cincinnati Reds came in here with 32 defeats.
- 1:48:16One reason why, of course, they're in the cellar in the west.
- 1:48:20Here's the Psych 1 fish on the way.
- 1:48:22Lifted to Darrell Thomas in right field.
- 1:48:24He is right there, puts it in the basket, runaway.
- 1:48:30And Raphael Landisoy coming up.
- 1:48:33The two great teams, the Reds had.
- 1:48:35I mean, they really did.
- 1:48:36They were back in 1975 and 76.
- 1:48:40In 1976, the Reds didn't lose their 32nd game until July 10th.
- 1:48:48And in 1975, the team had played that electrifying World Series
- 1:48:52with the Boston Reds on.
- 1:48:54They didn't lose their 32nd game that year until July the 20th.
- 1:49:00So they are very much off their feet, and you can understand why.
- 1:49:04The older players have gotten much older, and they lost their outfield.
- 1:49:09The fish to Landisoy a strike, an account on one.
- 1:49:13I mean, Foster and Griffey and Collins go.
- 1:49:16It's pretty tough to replace them right away.
- 1:49:19The Psych 1 fish on the way, Kirkball hit over the mound,
- 1:49:22charging it at Saks backhand, planks it up, and throws out Landisoy.
- 1:49:27So that's 23 in a row, grid fired by Jerry Royce.
- 1:49:31Twenty-three.
- 1:49:33Give it all up over.
- 1:49:36Boy, would there be some drama in this game tonight
- 1:49:38had Eddie Milner not opened up the game with a double.
- 1:49:41Royce has gotten everybody tense.
- 1:49:45Householder grounded out, fly to right.
- 1:49:47Ball is over two, hitting 167.
- 1:49:53And the fish to Paul, Kirkball for a strike.
- 1:49:57Householder weighs 180, so he's having one of those nightmare years
- 1:50:02where he is in truth not hitting his weight.
- 1:50:05For a strike, one fish on the way.
- 1:50:07He takes in the dirt, one ball, one strike.
- 1:50:09All part of the seasoning process, despite all your glistening credentials
- 1:50:14in the minor leagues, you finally come to the big leagues,
- 1:50:17and the act that is applied.
- 1:50:20Some hold up and some never do.
- 1:50:22One-one fish on the way, fouled off, one and two to count.
- 1:50:28We were talking at the very start of the game about how,
- 1:50:32despite how poorly the Dodgers have been playing,
- 1:50:36we're saying how quickly they could turn it around.
- 1:50:40Royce could come back and find the groove, the one-two fish
- 1:50:44is a ground foul outside of third.
- 1:50:46If Hooton is okay, the rest of them think it'll be okay.
- 1:50:49Ballums well and welts.
- 1:50:54Of course, the 11 runs, 13 hits tonight,
- 1:50:56that will really puff up the clubhouse.
- 1:50:59Now the one-two fish on the way.
- 1:51:01Royce delivers half-swing, strike three.
- 1:51:0424 in a row, retired by Jerry Royce.
- 1:51:07He has allowed the leadoff double.
- 1:51:09At the end of seven and a half, down into 11, red one.
- 1:51:13Royce Floyd is the leader.
- 1:51:15After Friday's second round of the Memphis Draw Classic,
- 1:51:18Floyd came up with a four under par 68 today,
- 1:51:21and is in at nine under par at 135 with 36 balls.
- 1:51:25That's three shots better than runner-up Mark Lyle,
- 1:51:28who started the day trying for the lead with Floyd,
- 1:51:31but could only come up with a 71.
- 1:51:33Jim Nelford, Hal Sutton, and Mike Pollan are third,
- 1:51:37and he's going to find Floyd.
- 1:51:39Nelford at a nine under par 63,
- 1:51:42including a record-trying six under par 30 on the back nine.
- 1:51:46And at Marlboro, Massachusetts,
- 1:51:48Art Wall fired a course record-trying five under par 66 Friday.
- 1:51:52The catcher, Arnold Palmer,
- 1:51:54was here as the lead at the two rounds
- 1:51:56of the $150,000 Marlboro Classic Senior Tournament.
- 1:52:00First round co-leader Sam Snead has qualified himself
- 1:52:04after signing an incorrect scorecard.
- 1:52:06Snead, who had turned in a 74,
- 1:52:08gave himself a par four in the 15 hole instead of a bogey five.
- 1:52:13Charlie Ones, a club pro from Santa Florida,
- 1:52:15and Billy Casper at 141.
- 1:52:18Even par 142, along with defending champion Bob Goldie,
- 1:52:21are Peter Thompson and Bill Johnson.
- 1:52:24The Watkins Glen Grind Free Association announced Friday
- 1:52:27that no summer auto races will be held this year
- 1:52:30at the world-famous Road Racing Circuit.
- 1:52:32The Association's executive director, Malcolm Carey,
- 1:52:35claimed the cancellation on continuing financial
- 1:52:38and legal problems for the circuit
- 1:52:40in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
- 1:52:45At the bottom of the eighth inning,
- 1:52:47the Dodgers are 11 and the Reds 1.
- 1:52:49And we'll pause the state identification.
- 1:52:51This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 1:52:54And this is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:53:06In the eighth inning, Kenny Landrow,
- 1:53:08having his first big game in quite a while,
- 1:53:11he has a single, a triple, and a home run.
- 1:53:16And not surely delivered in the first one-strike,
- 1:53:19on deck is Ron Renneke and Engel Comin.
- 1:53:25Now there's like one fish on the way.
- 1:53:27There's a five-holder right field.
- 1:53:29A householder is there, and that'll do it to Landrow.
- 1:53:32So one out in the eighth inning.
- 1:53:34And Ron Renneke will be coming up.
- 1:53:36Ron Renneke.
- 1:53:38A little cooler.
- 1:53:40Renneke hitting 263.
- 1:53:44Ron will hit right into the court against Curley.
- 1:53:48And his average of 263 is based primarily on his success
- 1:53:52at the left-handed batter.
- 1:53:54Right-handed, he's only hitting 150.
- 1:53:57The pitch join, a little high ball on it, one and all.
- 1:54:02The Dodgers, having a four-game losing streak.
- 1:54:06One old fish, Ron Renneke, is rounded up one third,
- 1:54:09right behind the badgers.
- 1:54:10Landis-Groyde, throwing out.
- 1:54:14Two out of the eighth inning.
- 1:54:16Engel Comin finishing up for Pedro Guerrero.
- 1:54:21Tonight, Sacks went one for four.
- 1:54:25Landrow had a single triple and home run.
- 1:54:28Dusty Baker had one hit.
- 1:54:31He went one for five.
- 1:54:33One for four.
- 1:54:35Guerrero had a double and a couple of walks.
- 1:54:38Barby, two singles and a home run.
- 1:54:42Say is the only man without a hit,
- 1:54:44but he has a couple of RBI's on an infield out
- 1:54:47and a scoring five-all.
- 1:54:49Sosha has one hit.
- 1:54:51Russell had a base hit and Blander had one.
- 1:54:55The pitch to Thomas Fishing, ball one, one and all.
- 1:54:57And Jerry Royce has a base hit.
- 1:55:00The one old fish on the way.
- 1:55:02And Darrell, 20 to hit the right field.
- 1:55:04Householder is there.
- 1:55:05So the Dodgers go quietly.
- 1:55:07And at the end of eighth, the Dodgers 11, red one.
- 1:55:10Final score in San Diego.
- 1:55:12The Dodgers have defeated Houston at final six to two.
- 1:55:15They did it with six runs, seven hits and three errors,
- 1:55:17while the Astros had two runs, six hits and no misuse.
- 1:55:20Lawler is the winner.
- 1:55:22He's now six and one.
- 1:55:24Sutton, a loser, seven and three.
- 1:55:27So a step for the Atlanta-San Francisco game.
- 1:55:29All finals are in.
- 1:55:30That ball game after six.
- 1:55:33It is Atlanta five and San Francisco three.
- 1:55:37We'll check the standings in a few minutes
- 1:55:39and see how things look at the moment.
- 1:55:42Again, through the other games played earlier,
- 1:55:45Jerry Martin's RBI single with 12th innings
- 1:55:48gave the Kansas City Royals a 3-2 victory
- 1:55:50over the Seattle Mariners.
- 1:55:52In Milwaukee, Paul Molotov scored the go-ahead run
- 1:55:55on Kirk Gibson's wild throw of the eighth
- 1:55:57to spark the Milwaukee Brewers
- 1:55:59to an eight to six victory over the Detroit Tigers.
- 1:56:02In the American League at Baltimore,
- 1:56:04Gary Runnick and Cal Ripken
- 1:56:05blasted first hitting homers back to back
- 1:56:08to the Baltimore Orioles
- 1:56:09down the New York Yankees nine to four.
- 1:56:12Well, we come to the ninth inning
- 1:56:14where the Dodgers leading the Reds 11 to one.
- 1:56:18Jerry Royce tuning up,
- 1:56:20and of course he's retired 24 in a row.
- 1:56:23But he is guy of the perfecto
- 1:56:25because he gave up the leadoff double to Eddie Milner.
- 1:56:28He's got everybody after the double.
- 1:56:30He'll be pitching to Alex Berlino,
- 1:56:34who will have a hitter for Bob Shirley.
- 1:56:40Larry Bittner is going to come out on deck,
- 1:56:42so Bittner will be hitting for Shirley.
- 1:56:46And then it will be Ed Milner.
- 1:56:48Trevino has grounded a short
- 1:56:50and fouled out to Royce.
- 1:56:52Right-hand-hitting catcher, 0 for 2,
- 1:56:54waves at a fastball in the count of 0 and 1.
- 1:56:59Royce with six strikeouts tonight
- 1:57:01and has not walked about it.
- 1:57:03Yeah, he ended up winding up now to strike one pitch,
- 1:57:06and that's popped in the air.
- 1:57:07Sacks going out to get it, calling that he has it,
- 1:57:10and he's true to his word.
- 1:57:1225 in a row, retired by Jerry Royce.
- 1:57:19Now Larry Bittner will be coming up to bat for Bob Shirley.
- 1:57:23And the second hitter for Cincinnati, batting for Shirley, number 23, Larry Bittner.
- 1:57:36Bittner is the first 10-hitter used by John McNamara.
- 1:57:40He's hitting 3.08.
- 1:57:41He is two home runs, 10 RBIs, better in left-hand batter.
- 1:57:48When Jickey struck out, Walker grounded out,
- 1:57:51and now here's Larry Bittner.
- 1:57:54So Royce with one out on the ninth inning and breezing 11 to 1.
- 1:57:58Jerry into the windup and delivers.
- 1:58:00Bittner takes the strike in the count of 0 and 1.
- 1:58:03Larry has played with the Washington Saniteus,
- 1:58:06Texas Rangers, Montreal, the Cubs, and Cincinnati.
- 1:58:10He takes inside.
- 1:58:12Bittner will be 35.
- 1:58:14He's from Iowa.
- 1:58:15He's from Pocahontas, Iowa.
- 1:58:23The pitch to Bittner is low ball two, two and one.
- 1:58:26Larry Bittner is the only free agent ever signed by the Reds
- 1:58:30through the re-increase draft system.
- 1:58:34And they got him after he left Chicago at the end of the 80s season.
- 1:58:43Bittner pitched in one game five years ago for the Cubs.
- 1:58:48Swing doesn't get it to him, too.
- 1:58:50Now to do, he worked an inning in the third.
- 1:58:53He walked one, struck out three, gave up five hits,
- 1:58:58and was charged with six earned runs.
- 1:59:00The 2-2 pitch strikes three, call.
- 1:59:03Twenty-six in a row, retired by Royce.
- 1:59:09But again, we don't have to repeat in case there's some folks just picking up the game.
- 1:59:15Eddie Millner opened up the game with a double to left,
- 1:59:19and Royce has gotten everybody since.
- 1:59:22Twenty-six consecutive batters.
- 1:59:25But Jerry's trying for his second one-hitter of the year.
- 1:59:30And he gave up a double in the first inning in that game to Art Howe of Houston.
- 1:59:35Royce is high, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:59:38It would also be the fifth one-hitter in the league this year, pitch outside.
- 1:59:43There would be two by Royce, and Noll, Hooten, and Eichelberger.
- 1:59:48And it would be the second time this year the Reds have been one-hitted.
- 1:59:52Dickie Noll's of the Cubs did that back in April.
- 1:59:55Here's the 2-0 pitch, and Millner drives it deep down the right field line, fouling out of play.
- 2:00:032-1-1 to Ed Millner.
- 2:00:12Millner has had two four-hit games this year.
- 2:00:15He's doing pretty well, seeing limited service.
- 2:00:18And Royce comes to him 2-1, missed outside and high ball three.
- 2:00:22Ironically, Millner didn't figure to play tonight.
- 2:00:27But Cesar Cedeno injured his hand last night, and he couldn't use it tonight.
- 2:00:32And Millner got the hit.
- 2:00:34Ground ball to the right side.
- 2:00:36That passes over to Garvey.
- 2:00:3827 consecutive outs after the leadoff double.
- 2:00:43A magnificent one-hitter by Jerry Royce.
- 2:00:46We'll have the totals after this.

- 2:01:00The Braves are still winning their ball game.
- 2:01:02They lead it actually west, two games over San Diego, eight over the Dodgers.
- 2:01:06And the last thing we have learned from San Francisco's Calisic Park,
- 2:01:10middle of the seventh, that the Braves are winning over the Giants, 5-3.
- 2:01:15San Diego, in the meantime, defeated Houston 6-2.

- 2:01:47The totals for the Dodgers, 11 runs, 13 hits.
- 2:01:51The Reds, one run, one hit.
- 2:01:53That was the leadoff double by Milner, and then Royce retired 27 to strike you the batter.
