- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good afternoon, I'm Mahalia Artis. A one-man crime spree which
- 0:08Speaker 2: included the ramming of a police car and an all-out
- 0:11Speaker 2: search in Metro involving drones and officers on foot has
- 0:15Speaker 2: resulted in the arrest of a 35-year-old. The incident began
- 0:18Speaker 2: unfolding at about 10.30 last night when RNC pulled over
- 0:22Speaker 2: a vehicle on Ashgrove Drive. An officer was speaking with
- 0:25Speaker 2: the driver, who had given police a false name. With
- 0:28Speaker 2: no warning, the driver shifted the vehicle in reverse, slamming
- 0:31Speaker 2: into the police car and nearly hitting some officers. RNC
- 0:35Speaker 2: were then called out to a car fire in the
- 0:37Speaker 2: area of Danny Drive and determined that it was the
- 0:39Speaker 2: car in question. After a search, the suspect was found
- 0:42Speaker 2: hiding in the area. He now faces numerous charges. There
- 0:47Speaker 2: was a commotion at McDonald's on Kenmount Road last night,
- 0:49Speaker 2: resulting in the arrest of two people. RNC were in
- 0:52Speaker 2: the area at about 8 o'clock looking for a 41-year-old
- 0:55Speaker 2: woman who had warrants out against her. While dealing with
- 0:58Speaker 2: that matter, there was an assault happening which led to
- 1:00Speaker 2: the arrest of a 41-year-old man. He was taken to
- 1:03Speaker 2: the lockup. A young teenager has been arrested on some
- 1:06Speaker 2: serious charges following an incident in CBS. The RNC responded
- 1:11Speaker 2: around mid-afternoon Saturday. The 13-year-old girl has been charged with
- 1:15Speaker 2: assault with a weapon, causing damage to property and breaching
- 1:18Speaker 2: release orders. There's a petition making the rounds against a
- 1:22Speaker 2: data centre planned for Cape Breton by a company which
- 1:25Speaker 2: most recently was aiming for a wind-to-hydrogen project on the
- 1:28Speaker 2: Buren Peninsula. But now, it is now embroiled in a
- 1:31Speaker 2: dispute with the government of Newfoundland and Labrador over millions
- 1:34Speaker 2: of dollars in land fees. Everwind Fuels says it never
- 1:38Speaker 2: signed a control to pay the government crown land fees,
- 1:41Speaker 2: but Energy Minister Lloyd Parrott says collection efforts are ongoing.
- 1:45Speaker 2: The company has its sights set on establishing a $ 10
- 1:48Speaker 2: billion data centre around Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, but Michael
- 1:52Speaker 2: McCluskey of Dartmouth is driving a petition against it. The
- 1:55Speaker 2: jury is still out on whether such centres are a
- 1:57Speaker 2: blessing or a curse. In central Newfoundland, a company a
- 2:00Speaker 2: decade ago was toying with establishing a data centre in
- 2:03Speaker 2: Grand Falls, Windsor, but that went nowhere. partly because of
- 2:06Speaker 2: concerns about the availability and cost of electricity. Mayor Mike
- 2:10Speaker 2: Brown says there has been no further talk in that regard.
- 2:13Speaker 3: No, it's not two megawatts critical load. So at that time,
- 2:18Speaker 3: the government couldn't come up with a price for them
- 2:21Speaker 3: and couldn't guarantee the amount of power that was required
- 2:23Speaker 3: to run that particular data centre.
- 2:26Speaker 2: A former mayor of St. John's who has been involved
- 2:29Speaker 2: in the consumerism movement regarding fuel prices over the years
- 2:32Speaker 2: believes the provincial government made a grave misstep on Thursday
- 2:35Speaker 2: when it chose to limit eligibility for a subsidy for
- 2:38Speaker 2: those who heat their homes with oil. The province doubled
- 2:41Speaker 2: the oil supplement to $ 1, 000 from $ 500, but left the
- 2:42Speaker 2: total household income threshold at $ 150, 000. The electricity rebate of
- 2:45Speaker 2: 15% applies to all regardless of income. Affordability will likely
- 2:54Speaker 2: be one of the main issues in the House of
- 2:56Speaker 2: Assembly fall sitting, which begins tomorrow. Doc O'Keefe says food, medicine,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and heat should all be considered essential and, therefore, tax-free.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Food and medicine are not taxed, but heating fuel, including
- 3:08Speaker 2: electricity and oil, is.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Those in Confederation Building must know that they're cutting out 40,000
- 3:16Speaker 1: to 50,000 homes in Newfoundland and Labrador that heat by oil.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Who in the name of God? would sit back and
- 3:24Speaker 1: allow that to happen, and then come out and say,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I'm doing this for all of us. Well, boy, if
- 3:30Speaker 1: you're doing it for all of us, some of us
- 3:33Speaker 1: are not getting it, and a lot of us are
- 3:35Speaker 1: not getting it.
- 3:37Speaker 2: The province is going to cut some fees as part
- 3:39Speaker 2: of its next hit on the cost of living to
- 3:41Speaker 2: be unveiled tomorrow morning. There are dozens of categories of
- 3:44Speaker 2: taxes and fees related to being on the road, but
- 3:46Speaker 2: the driver's license and vehicle registration costs hit more frequently.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The news conference is slated for Monday morning at 10.30
- 3:54Speaker 2: at the Motor Vehicle Registration in Mount Pearl. Finance Minister
- 3:57Speaker 2: Craig Pardee will be joined by two members of the
- 4:00Speaker 2: PC Caucus, St. George's Humber MHA Hal Cormier and Lewisport-Twillingate
- 4:05Speaker 2: MHA Mark Butt. VOCM News will be there. That's your news.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I'm Mahalia Artis.
