Latest / Inside West Palm Beach / Save Water AND Money: The City of WPB Shows You How!
Transcript
- 7:01:09Welcome to the City Center podcast. I'm
- 7:01:12Gerry Marcelo. West Palm Beach is known
- 7:01:14for warm temperatures and tropical style
- 7:01:17rains, but in spite of our tropical
- 7:01:19moisture, we are a city that needs to
- 7:01:21worry about conserving water. We'll
- 7:01:24discuss why that is and more importantly
- 7:01:26how residents can be a part of the
- 7:01:28solution when it comes to water
- 7:01:30conservation. Next on the City Center
- 7:01:33podcast.
- 7:01:38And joining me today is Elaine Christian,
- 7:01:40Sustainability Supervisor for the City
- 7:01:42of West Palm Beach. Elaine, welcome.
- 7:01:45Thank you for having
- 7:01:45me. I'm so excited to be
- 7:01:46here. You know, one of the things that
- 7:01:48pops into my mind immediately is people
- 7:01:51know that we've got, you know,
- 7:01:53administration here in the city. We have
- 7:01:54police, we have fire, we have all the
- 7:01:56departments and then you say, well, what
- 7:01:59do you have for sustainability? People
- 7:02:00don't even know about sustainability.
- 7:02:02Tell us a little bit about what you guys
- 7:02:04do. So the Office of Sustainability has
- 7:02:06been around since 2008 for the City of
- 7:02:08West Palm Beach and we do so many
- 7:02:10things. We are, we look holistically. We
- 7:02:14work with all different departments
- 7:02:15within the city. We focus on everything
- 7:02:18sustainability. I think if you think of
- 7:02:20any sort of aspect that is involved with
- 7:02:23sustainability, we probably have a
- 7:02:25program or initiative that covers it from
- 7:02:28tree giveaways, rain barrel
- 7:02:29giveaways, toilet credits, you name it.
- 7:02:33We're probably doing it. We're working
- 7:02:35on helping the city become a better place
- 7:02:38to live, work and play. And that's
- 7:02:40important. Obviously, the quality of life
- 7:02:42is one of the magic things about
- 7:02:43West Palm Beach. And as we continue to
- 7:02:46grow, it's easy, that's easily lost. So
- 7:02:49we really need to be thinking about so
- 7:02:50sustainability. You guys are thinking
- 7:02:53about not only today, but frankly, think
- 7:02:55looking into the future, making sure
- 7:02:57that the city has got everything it's
- 7:02:58going to be needing,
- 7:03:00not in 2026, but 2036,
- 7:03:0346. Absolutely. And how did you get
- 7:03:05involved in
- 7:03:06sustainability? Oh gosh. So my
- 7:03:08degree is in marine biology. Wow. And I
- 7:03:11graduated from Auburn University and
- 7:03:13after that, you know, knew that I wanted
- 7:03:15to be in a coastal area, was really
- 7:03:18looking at Florida or California, and
- 7:03:21ended up just applying to a lot of
- 7:03:23different places. And the Smithsonian
- 7:03:25Marine Station in Fort Pierce reached
- 7:03:27out to me and offered me a paid
- 7:03:29internship and out of college. That
- 7:03:30sounds really great. Yeah, she does. So I
- 7:03:33moved on down to Fort Pierce and actually
- 7:03:35lived in Port St. Lucie for a little bit.
- 7:03:38And after that, you
- 7:03:39know, paid internships
- 7:03:41only last so long. So looked for other
- 7:03:43positions in the area, ended up applying
- 7:03:46to the Cox Science Center and Aquarium,
- 7:03:48previously known as the South Florida
- 7:03:49Science Center, and was offered a
- 7:03:51position as a science
- 7:03:52educator there. So I
- 7:03:53was going around to different schools in
- 7:03:56the area every single day, offering
- 7:03:58different programs on just anything
- 7:04:01science-based and teaching all levels
- 7:04:03from kindergarten to adults and worked
- 7:04:07with them for a couple years. And
- 7:04:09honestly, my mom one day just sent me the
- 7:04:12job listing for a sustainability
- 7:04:13program coordinator with the city. And I
- 7:04:15looked at it and I said, "Wow, you really
- 7:04:18have high hopes for me here." And, you
- 7:04:22know, she said, "Take a
- 7:04:23chance, apply for it."
- 7:04:24And honestly, from just a young age, I've
- 7:04:27always been interested in
- 7:04:28conservation. I love nature. You'd always
- 7:04:30find me outside. I'd rather be outside
- 7:04:32than inside and just enjoying nature
- 7:04:35overall, trees, even playing in the dirt.
- 7:04:38One of the things that, of your long list
- 7:04:41of things that you've done
- 7:04:43leading up to this, education and
- 7:04:45teaching people, instructing people about
- 7:04:48things, I think that'd be like a major
- 7:04:49part of what's involved in
- 7:04:51sustainability. Of course, education is a
- 7:04:53huge component. And for the past nine
- 7:04:56and a half years, I was a sustainability
- 7:04:58program coordinator focused on education
- 7:05:00and outreach, now moved into the
- 7:05:01supervisor role. But that's really our
- 7:05:05main focus. All of our team really
- 7:05:08focuses on education, whether they're
- 7:05:09focused on internal operations, working
- 7:05:12with other departments within the city,
- 7:05:13or looking at green infrastructure. We're
- 7:05:15always out and about either talking
- 7:05:18with residents, organizations that are in
- 7:05:20the area, or just, like I said, just
- 7:05:22our city departments. It's a
- 7:05:25collaborative effort and
- 7:05:26we all have to work together
- 7:05:27and be educated. We understand that not
- 7:05:30everyone knows as much as everyone else.
- 7:05:33And we all start at different levels and
- 7:05:34that's really kind of the joy in it,
- 7:05:37is helping people understand
- 7:05:39sustainability. Do you find
- 7:05:40that a lot of people are coming
- 7:05:41and asking questions? Is it people hungry
- 7:05:44for information about it?
- 7:05:45They are definitely. We're out and about
- 7:05:47in the community all the
- 7:05:48time too. And we find that
- 7:05:50people come up to our tables and ask us
- 7:05:52questions about what they can do. They
- 7:05:55see a problem within
- 7:05:56their community. Maybe it's just their
- 7:05:57neighborhood and they come to
- 7:05:59us and ask us for our advice.
- 7:06:01And we're always happy to
- 7:06:02provide any information we can.
- 7:06:04So obviously you have different programs
- 7:06:06and different events
- 7:06:08that you attend. Is there a
- 7:06:09list of where these events may be and
- 7:06:12when you're going to be there?
- 7:06:13Of course. So on our website, wpb.org
- 7:06:15slash green, we have an
- 7:06:17event calendar and we also
- 7:06:19post all of our events on our Facebook
- 7:06:21and our Instagram, which is at wpbgreen.
- 7:06:24Oh, there you go. And we'll be mentioning
- 7:06:25that web address again, but it's wpb.org
- 7:06:29front slash green. Yes. Okay. Got it. So
- 7:06:32we'll be mentioning that again,
- 7:06:33because that's important. We're here to
- 7:06:35talk about water. Yes.
- 7:06:38West Palm Beach is a subtropical town.
- 7:06:40You know, we get a lot of water. It's
- 7:06:41very warm here. A lot
- 7:06:42of people just don't understand that
- 7:06:44water conservation for
- 7:06:45this city is very important.
- 7:06:47Tell us why. It is every single day.
- 7:06:49There are more and more
- 7:06:50people moving into South Florida,
- 7:06:52into our city, which is great. We love to
- 7:06:54see it. But that means
- 7:06:56that there is a stress on our
- 7:06:58resources and especially our water
- 7:07:00supplies. So that is something that we
- 7:07:02really have to protect.
- 7:07:03We have to look at conservation and it's,
- 7:07:05it's not just the office of
- 7:07:06sustainability doing it.
- 7:07:07It's everyone putting in their parts to
- 7:07:10help conserve water within our area.
- 7:07:12And water, you know, there are parts
- 7:07:14right now in 2026 where
- 7:07:17in the west part of the state, there's a,
- 7:07:18there's a fairly
- 7:07:19significant drought situation.
- 7:07:21It's not hard to imagine that happening
- 7:07:23right here. And it has in
- 7:07:24the past and we have looked
- 7:07:25at watering restrictions, especially
- 7:07:27irrigation is, you know, one
- 7:07:30of our, the largest consumers
- 7:07:32for water and South Florida water
- 7:07:34management district in the past has put
- 7:07:36in some restrictions
- 7:07:37where you limit the number of days per
- 7:07:40week that you water your
- 7:07:41lawn or your plants and,
- 7:07:43and that can help conserve water
- 7:07:45tremendously. And it's not just a matter
- 7:07:46of becoming conservative
- 7:07:48when the water is running low. It's
- 7:07:51conserving all the time.
- 7:07:52Right. It's an everyday issue.
- 7:07:54It's something that we have to be
- 7:07:55concerned about every single day. And
- 7:07:58this never goes away. You
- 7:08:00know, it's something that we just have to
- 7:08:01be very conscious of
- 7:08:02every day and do our part,
- 7:08:04do what we can. And, and that
- 7:08:06collectively makes a
- 7:08:08very huge impact overall.
- 7:08:09Let's talk about some of the things that
- 7:08:11residents can do to get involved with
- 7:08:13saving water. There's
- 7:08:15a couple of really big ones, but right in
- 7:08:17front of us here, we have
- 7:08:18some small items that are
- 7:08:19actually really quite interesting. Let's,
- 7:08:22let's go over a couple of them.
- 7:08:23Yes. One of my favorites is our five
- 7:08:26minute shower timer.
- 7:08:28Okay. Let me hold that up.
- 7:08:28This one is a crowd favorite. So how's it
- 7:08:33work? So you, it has a
- 7:08:35suction cup on the back
- 7:08:36and you would put it in your shower. So
- 7:08:40when you are in the shower,
- 7:08:41you'll turn it so that the sand
- 7:08:44starts to, to drain down maybe the other
- 7:08:48way though. Sorry. I
- 7:08:49can't see that from the back.
- 7:08:51And so then that tells you when that five
- 7:08:54minutes is running out. So
- 7:08:55when the sand all goes to the
- 7:08:56bottom, you know that it's been five
- 7:08:58minutes. You know, I gotta
- 7:08:59tell you, I'm a, I'm a criminal
- 7:09:00in that sense. I like long showers. I'd
- 7:09:03probably be turning this
- 7:09:03thing back over. And hopefully
- 7:09:05you feel a little guilty if you have to.
- 7:09:07You probably know that.
- 7:09:08Yeah. But that's a great idea.
- 7:09:10It's, it's so easy to get lost. You're
- 7:09:13thinking about work or life
- 7:09:14and whatever. And suddenly
- 7:09:16five minutes turns into 10, 15. Right.
- 7:09:18And that's a huge amount of
- 7:09:20water. Yeah. That's really neat.
- 7:09:23Yeah. All right. Well, we love that one.
- 7:09:25I'm also looking at
- 7:09:27indoor water use as a kitchen
- 7:09:29aerator here. So this is a nice little
- 7:09:33device. If your faucet does
- 7:09:35not currently have an aerator on
- 7:09:36it, you can install one of these and it
- 7:09:39decreases the amount of
- 7:09:40water coming out. It does not
- 7:09:41decrease the pressure though. I was going
- 7:09:43to ask you about that. It
- 7:09:44would seem to me that restricting
- 7:09:45or slowing down the water in some form
- 7:09:47would really make it sort
- 7:09:48of a dribble as opposed to
- 7:09:50forceful. This really does the job. It
- 7:09:52does the job. And, um, and we
- 7:09:54often give them away for free
- 7:09:55out at our events. So if you stop by our
- 7:09:57table, we have them and
- 7:09:58you can try them out, but,
- 7:10:00but also just look at your own faucets at
- 7:10:02home and just check to see
- 7:10:03if you already have one. A lot
- 7:10:05of fixtures already come with them. Um,
- 7:10:07but they may be varying, um,
- 7:10:09efficiencies. So some may
- 7:10:11conserve more water than others. That's
- 7:10:13something you can look at. Do you know,
- 7:10:14well, fan, hopefully
- 7:10:15I'm not surprising you with this, that if
- 7:10:17you are like a new
- 7:10:18construction, you know, a new
- 7:10:19apartment or a condo that you're moving
- 7:10:21in is, are there law, are
- 7:10:22there rules and code that will
- 7:10:24make you use a restricted water flow? So
- 7:10:26I know for toilets there
- 7:10:28are, but I don't know for sure.
- 7:10:31I don't know if there's like a law. We're
- 7:10:32going to be talking about
- 7:10:33toilets a little bit here.
- 7:10:34Yes. We fortunately don't have one to
- 7:10:36demonstrate to you, but we do have a
- 7:10:38couple of last items here.
- 7:10:40Let's go ahead and talk about this cool
- 7:10:42little device. Yes. So
- 7:10:43that is a hose timer or an
- 7:10:46irrigation timer. So you can hook that up
- 7:10:48and you can set the times. So
- 7:10:50if you have a sprinkler that
- 7:10:51you're using, maybe a manual one that you
- 7:10:53put out and in your yard,
- 7:10:55um, then that can set the timer
- 7:10:57for you and you can walk away. You can go
- 7:10:59inside. Maybe you're cooking
- 7:11:00or doing something else and
- 7:11:02you don't have to worry about wasting a
- 7:11:04bunch of water. How many
- 7:11:05times have I done exactly that?
- 7:11:07Put out a manual sprinkler, turn it on
- 7:11:11just as the sun's going
- 7:11:12down. And then I wake up in the
- 7:11:14middle of the night and I put down way
- 7:11:16too much water on the lawn.
- 7:11:17So this is a great device.
- 7:11:19And the neat thing about it is that it's,
- 7:11:21it's, it can be moved to different
- 7:11:22spigots. If you don't,
- 7:11:24you know, just have one you can use in
- 7:11:26different places, a great
- 7:11:27little device to save a ton of
- 7:11:28water. Is it true that irrigation is like
- 7:11:31one of the primary ways
- 7:11:32that we use too much water?
- 7:11:34Especially outdoors. Yes. Outside the
- 7:11:36home for sure. Irrigation
- 7:11:38is a huge component of water
- 7:11:39usage inside the home. Toilets. Toilets.
- 7:11:43Again, we're going to get
- 7:11:44back. We're talking about
- 7:11:45toilets in just a little bit, but there's
- 7:11:47one last item here and this
- 7:11:48is more of a common sense one.
- 7:11:50Here we have a hose gun. Hose nozzle.
- 7:11:53Hose nozzle. We're going to call it a
- 7:11:55nozzle. It looks like a
- 7:11:57gun, but that's fine. It's a nozzle. What
- 7:12:00about this nozzle is
- 7:12:01conserved, conserved water. So
- 7:12:04it's going to stop the flow of water. And
- 7:12:06also it has different, you
- 7:12:08can change different modes on
- 7:12:12the, the head there. And so you can
- 7:12:14either, if you want a lot of water to
- 7:12:15come out, you can have a
- 7:12:16lot of water, or if you want just like a
- 7:12:18mist, you can have a mist
- 7:12:19coming out. So it kind of varies.
- 7:12:21And I know for me, I have some more
- 7:12:23delicate plants around my
- 7:12:25home that prefer mist rather
- 7:12:27than a soak. So, so you can use that.
- 7:12:30But, but also if you think
- 7:12:31about it, a lot of times,
- 7:12:33if you're out just using your hose and
- 7:12:35there's not a hose nozzle on the end,
- 7:12:37that water is just flowing freely and it
- 7:12:39can waste a lot. I got to tell you, I've,
- 7:12:41I've seen folks washing their cars and
- 7:12:44they have just the raw
- 7:12:45hose and it's just water just
- 7:12:48running down the curb right into, right
- 7:12:50into the, in the storm
- 7:12:51drain. That is a shame. So
- 7:12:53this is a smart thing to have. It's
- 7:12:55inexpensive. And then on top
- 7:12:56of that, you just simply adjust
- 7:12:57it to the kind of stream you need,
- 7:12:59whether it's a jet for whatever and
- 7:13:02you're in rock and roll.
- 7:13:03So it's, it's a great thing to have. So
- 7:13:05we've gone over some of the
- 7:13:06things that we can do inside
- 7:13:07and outside, just simple things to help
- 7:13:10conserve water. But there's
- 7:13:11a one item that you really
- 7:13:13want to talk about. Let's talk about this
- 7:13:14program that you've got
- 7:13:15coming up. It's very exciting.
- 7:13:16Yes. So the high efficiency toilet credit
- 7:13:19program is, is a very great
- 7:13:21way to save money when you
- 7:13:23are replacing your toilets and also
- 7:13:24decrease your water usage
- 7:13:26inside the home as well.
- 7:13:27Okay. So what's the deal? It's, are we
- 7:13:30buying a new toilet or are we just
- 7:13:32changing the guts out?
- 7:13:33What's, what's the program? Sure. So the
- 7:13:35program has evolved over
- 7:13:36time. It used to be a voucher
- 7:13:38program, but now it is currently a water
- 7:13:41bill credit program. So
- 7:13:42you will be purchasing the
- 7:13:44toilet beforehand. We encourage you to go
- 7:13:46to our website, which is
- 7:13:47wpb.org slash save water.
- 7:13:49And you can view all of the program
- 7:13:51requirements, the steps to apply,
- 7:13:53frequently asked questions, and the
- 7:13:55application is available on there.
- 7:13:57But the first thing you're going to want
- 7:13:58to do is make sure you're
- 7:13:59eligible for the program.
- 7:14:00Who is eligible? So, um, city of West
- 7:14:04Palm Beach water customers are eligible
- 7:14:06and I really encourage
- 7:14:08everyone to go onto the website, just
- 7:14:09read through the details.
- 7:14:10But if you have any questions,
- 7:14:12make sure you reach out to me, my email
- 7:14:13and phone number is on the webpage.
- 7:14:15Okay. Got it. Got it. Okay. So that's a
- 7:14:17great step forward. So the
- 7:14:19ideas is that you will go out and
- 7:14:22purchase a high efficiency toilet and you
- 7:14:25have information about
- 7:14:26what qualifies as all that.
- 7:14:28And then go out and get that. And then
- 7:14:29there's a credit. Now I
- 7:14:31just want to cover that basis,
- 7:14:32not necessarily a voucher, but you get,
- 7:14:34is it, you get
- 7:14:35credits on your water bill?
- 7:14:36Yes, that is correct. So if you purchase
- 7:14:39a toilet for $150, you submit your
- 7:14:43receipt along with your
- 7:14:43application to me. I review everything,
- 7:14:46make sure everything checks
- 7:14:47out. And once it's approved,
- 7:14:49we're, we're able to give up to $125 back
- 7:14:51onto the water account. So if you
- 7:14:52purchased the toilet for
- 7:14:53150, we give 125 back. Gotcha. Gotcha. So
- 7:14:57all the way up to $125,
- 7:15:00if you buy $150 toilet,
- 7:15:02your investment in the deal is the 25.
- 7:15:05That's pretty good.
- 7:15:06So well, it keeps you,
- 7:15:07it keeps people from going out and buying
- 7:15:08a $5,000 toilet. Right.
- 7:15:10And expecting to pay back.
- 7:15:11I've seen some pretty expensive. Pretty
- 7:15:12expensive toilets, but, but okay. So,
- 7:15:15and, and to the point,
- 7:15:17high efficiency toilets, what makes a
- 7:15:20toilet high efficiency? Why are older
- 7:15:23toilets low efficiency?
- 7:15:25How much water do they use? So before
- 7:15:271995, toilets were using three, five,
- 7:15:31maybe seven gallons per
- 7:15:32flush. And so once we, once water sense
- 7:15:36came into play, they have
- 7:15:37the high efficiency toilets.
- 7:15:38They now use 1.28 gallons or less. So,
- 7:15:42and you still have the
- 7:15:42ability to do the job. They do. Yes.
- 7:15:46It's a good question. It is a good
- 7:15:47question. Yes. All right. So the idea is
- 7:15:50that they will be marked
- 7:15:52as high efficiency. You know that the,
- 7:15:54you can just tell by the
- 7:15:55amount of water used gallons per
- 7:15:57flush, how much water, you know, which
- 7:16:00ones qualify, and then
- 7:16:01you can pick that up, get it
- 7:16:03installed. And then you get credit,
- 7:16:05credit back on your water
- 7:16:06bill. Yes. And if you have any
- 7:16:08questions, I mean, I've even had
- 7:16:09residents contact me after they've gone
- 7:16:12to the store, send me a
- 7:16:13picture while they're in the store. And
- 7:16:15they give me a call and they
- 7:16:17say, Hey, I just emailed you a
- 7:16:18picture of this toilet. Can I get it? And
- 7:16:21yeah, I'm able to, so people
- 7:16:22actually get, that's pretty
- 7:16:24neat. Yes. And I mean, it's a great way
- 7:16:25just to make sure you're
- 7:16:26getting what, you know, is, is
- 7:16:28eligible for the program. There are some
- 7:16:30tricky toilets out there
- 7:16:32that are dual flush. And so I
- 7:16:34do, there is some, some information,
- 7:16:39there's some information on the website
- 7:16:40about the dual flush
- 7:16:41toilets. So the maximum flush rate cannot
- 7:16:44exceed a certain amount. So you have to
- 7:16:47be cautious of that.
- 7:16:48So you're still dealing with a maximum
- 7:16:51flush rate as for
- 7:16:53qualification is, I know what you're
- 7:16:54talking about, the dual, dual, but you
- 7:16:56pick one or the other,
- 7:16:57depending on your need, right. But
- 7:17:01you're dealing with the maximum amount of
- 7:17:02water that's going to be
- 7:17:03used during a specific kind
- 7:17:05of flush. Correct. Gotcha. Fascinating.
- 7:17:09So what other requirements?
- 7:17:11So depending on the age of the
- 7:17:13home, we've currently, we've made some
- 7:17:15changes recently. But as
- 7:17:17it stands, if your home was
- 7:17:18built in 1995 or before, so in 1994, 93,
- 7:17:2292, you would be replacing
- 7:17:25with a 1.28 gallon per flush
- 7:17:27toilet. If your property was built after
- 7:17:311995, so in 96, 97, 98, so
- 7:17:35on, you would be replacing a 1.6
- 7:17:37gallon per flush toilet with a 1.0 gallon
- 7:17:39per flush or less. So
- 7:17:41after 1995, building code said
- 7:17:43that all new construction had to have 1.6
- 7:17:46gallon per flush toilets or
- 7:17:47less. And so that's where the
- 7:17:491.6 to 1.0 comes into play. So you just
- 7:17:52have to be really cautious
- 7:17:53about that. But all of that is
- 7:17:55detailed out on the website. And again, I
- 7:17:57encourage everyone call me,
- 7:17:59email me. I'm happy to walk them
- 7:18:00through it. Send you pictures. Yes. Send
- 7:18:02me pictures. All right.
- 7:18:05Well, it again, it is an
- 7:18:07important program. A tremendous amount of
- 7:18:10water to be saved here,
- 7:18:12you know, within the house.
- 7:18:14Obviously, irrigation is still a huge
- 7:18:16part of it. But, you know, doing
- 7:18:18everything we can to minimize
- 7:18:21the amount of water that we're that we're
- 7:18:23expending inside the home saves,
- 7:18:26basically preserves the
- 7:18:27future. Correct. Yeah. So it's going to
- 7:18:29reduce strain on our
- 7:18:30infrastructure. It's going to protect
- 7:18:32our ecosystems. It's going to also save
- 7:18:34residents money. I mean, that's the,
- 7:18:35that's the big one here,
- 7:18:36right? I mean, we all are concerned about
- 7:18:38money, of course, but also just
- 7:18:40conserving our precious
- 7:18:41resources is a huge component as well.
- 7:18:44Huge amount of information. A lot of
- 7:18:45things that people need
- 7:18:46to read up on to take part in these
- 7:18:48programs and to do the right thing.
- 7:18:50Again, the website is
- 7:18:51w w p p dot org slash save water. Save
- 7:18:56water. Okay. W p p dot org
- 7:18:58slash slash save water. Really,
- 7:19:01really cool. What are the things that we
- 7:19:02need to cover today? So we also have
- 7:19:04other great programs
- 7:19:05to help can save or help conserve water.
- 7:19:08So we have a rain barrel
- 7:19:10giveaway. And, um, and on that
- 7:19:12same website, the w p p dot org slash
- 7:19:14save water, you can go on there, um, and
- 7:19:16register for our next
- 7:19:18rain barrel giveaway. Okay. It's coming
- 7:19:20up on, I believe it's, oh, is
- 7:19:22it like a wooden rain barrel
- 7:19:23or what? No, not a wooden rain barrel. So
- 7:19:25these are actually
- 7:19:25repurposed barrels that used to hold
- 7:19:27syrup for soda products. Sweet. Yeah. So
- 7:19:31instead of them going to the
- 7:19:32landfill and going to trash,
- 7:19:35you know, contributing to the, our
- 7:19:37overall waste problem, they're being
- 7:19:39repurposed and they're
- 7:19:40turned into rain barrels. They are food
- 7:19:42grade safe. So they've been triple rents.
- 7:19:44They're safe for you
- 7:19:45to use on your plants. And you can even
- 7:19:48use the rainwater to water
- 7:19:49your cars, wash your pets. We
- 7:19:51just don't drink it. Right. Right. So you
- 7:19:53have a source of water that
- 7:19:55you just literally scoop up.
- 7:19:57You can wash car. You can, you can take
- 7:20:00care of the little plants
- 7:20:01out front of your house and you
- 7:20:03save that water and you don't, you're not
- 7:20:04using the hose. Right. And
- 7:20:06it's a 55 gallon rain barrel.
- 7:20:07I mean, you can save a lot of water that
- 7:20:09way. And that can also help
- 7:20:11reduce your water bill in the
- 7:20:13end too. That's a, that's a really
- 7:20:14terrific program. And it's all free. Wow.
- 7:20:18Again, information on the
- 7:20:19website. Yes. And you do have to be a
- 7:20:20city of West Palm Beach
- 7:20:21water customer. And we do,
- 7:20:22we give away one per property for the
- 7:20:24lifetime of the property.
- 7:20:25Wow. I would love to hear from
- 7:20:27somebody at home who has had an
- 7:20:29opportunity to use one of these rain
- 7:20:31barrels. I'd love to hear,
- 7:20:32you know, how long does it take to fill
- 7:20:34one up? Is it just like one
- 7:20:35rainstorm and it fills up or
- 7:20:37how long does it take? I'd love to hear.
- 7:20:39So if you have, if you have an
- 7:20:39opportunity to let us know,
- 7:20:41put some, put, put it down in the
- 7:20:42comments or, or shoot us
- 7:20:44a note, we'd love to hear.
- 7:20:45So what are the things that we need to
- 7:20:47talk about today? We also have a free
- 7:20:49irrigation evaluation
- 7:20:50program. Wait. Okay. Tell me about that.
- 7:20:53We haven't dived into
- 7:20:54that one yet. So this is new.
- 7:20:56We had a pilot program a couple of years
- 7:20:58ago and now we're rolling out a new
- 7:21:00program. It's in full
- 7:21:01effect right now. Um, where we've
- 7:21:04partnered with Palm Beach soil and water
- 7:21:05and they go out to once
- 7:21:07you, after you register, after you apply
- 7:21:09and you're approved for the
- 7:21:10program, um, you just have to be
- 7:21:12a city of West Palm Beach water customer.
- 7:21:14And, um, and Palm Beach
- 7:21:15soil and water will schedule
- 7:21:16your evaluation. You'll need to be there
- 7:21:19with them when they do
- 7:21:20that, but they'll basically just
- 7:21:22evaluate your irrigation and let you know
- 7:21:24if there are any
- 7:21:25improvements that can be made to make it
- 7:21:26more efficient. And, and that can give
- 7:21:29you really kind of a guideline of where
- 7:21:31you are, whether, um,
- 7:21:33your irrigation system needs maybe a
- 7:21:35little upgrade, maybe some
- 7:21:36TLC. There can be some easy
- 7:21:38things, um, that can be marked off. They
- 7:21:41can really help you
- 7:21:41conserve water. Yeah. So like
- 7:21:43changing types of sprinkler heads you
- 7:21:45have and how they spray and all.
- 7:21:47Sometimes they're broken.
- 7:21:48You don't even know. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that
- 7:21:50happens to me all the time where
- 7:21:51something gets broken
- 7:21:52and then suddenly a large brown spot
- 7:21:54appears for no apparent
- 7:21:55reason. And then, oh, it's perfect.
- 7:21:57Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, it sounds like a
- 7:21:59great opportunity for
- 7:22:00folks to have somebody come
- 7:22:02out and it's for free. It is. It's all
- 7:22:04free. Again, it's on the website,
- 7:22:07wpp.org, save water.
- 7:22:09Amazing cavalcade of items here that you
- 7:22:11guys, anything else that we got?
- 7:22:13As far as water conservation, that's
- 7:22:15really all that we have.
- 7:22:17Well, well, I will say,
- 7:22:18our home improvement program though, I
- 7:22:20did miss that one. So
- 7:22:21that one focuses on energy
- 7:22:24conservation and water conservation. So
- 7:22:26residents can apply and, um,
- 7:22:29you just have to be a city,
- 7:22:30West Palm beach resident. And, um, you
- 7:22:33attend the workshop. It's
- 7:22:34about an hour and a half. Um,
- 7:22:36usually we have them either in the
- 7:22:37evenings or on Saturdays, Saturday
- 7:22:39mornings, and you would
- 7:22:42attend and you get a lot of free
- 7:22:43resources, over $200 worth of free
- 7:22:45resources that you can go home
- 7:22:46with. And you also walk away with a lot
- 7:22:49of tips and education. This
- 7:22:51one's on a different website.
- 7:22:52It's wpp.org slash save energy. Save
- 7:22:55energy. Yes. Okay. Very good.
- 7:22:57All right. So, uh, that covers
- 7:22:59that type of program. And, uh, you know,
- 7:23:02again, it's, it's an
- 7:23:03amazing now, do these gatherings
- 7:23:06happen at city hall or do you go out to
- 7:23:09communities or we're usually
- 7:23:10at community centers, community
- 7:23:12centers. Yes. And even, um, we've had
- 7:23:14neighborhood associations schedule these
- 7:23:17for their neighborhoods.
- 7:23:19Um, uh, faith-based organizations have
- 7:23:21contacted us to schedule one
- 7:23:23for them. So really, if anyone's
- 7:23:24interested, if you have a group that's
- 7:23:26interested and they live in
- 7:23:27the city of West Palm beach,
- 7:23:28we're open to scheduling something for
- 7:23:30them. But if there is a
- 7:23:32group like a neighborhood
- 7:23:33association that's interested in offering
- 7:23:36this program at their
- 7:23:38neighborhood association
- 7:23:39meeting or something like that, you know,
- 7:23:41they want to schedule one.
- 7:23:43Um, they can always reach
- 7:23:44out to us and we can look at our calendar
- 7:23:46and see if we can schedule
- 7:23:47one special for them. That's
- 7:23:48tremendous. Huge amount of material and
- 7:23:51resources available to the
- 7:23:52residents of West Palm beach.
- 7:23:55People who use the water systems here in
- 7:23:57West Palm beach to
- 7:23:59conserve both water and all,
- 7:24:01all the other resources that we have here
- 7:24:03in the city. Um, you guys do
- 7:24:05amazing work and it's, it's,
- 7:24:07it's refreshing to see how the city is
- 7:24:11looking forward and not
- 7:24:12just thinking about next month
- 7:24:14or next year, but looking as far into the
- 7:24:17future as possible. And
- 7:24:18that's what you guys are doing.
- 7:24:19That's, that's pretty spectacular. Of
- 7:24:21course. And, and also, you know, we
- 7:24:23haven't really touched on
- 7:24:24to use water. You're also using energy.
- 7:24:27So there's a water energy nexus there.
- 7:24:30And we're also looking
- 7:24:30at, you know, the city has an overarching
- 7:24:32goal of net zero by the
- 7:24:33year 2050. So everything really
- 7:24:35comes into play there. Um, water
- 7:24:37conservation, energy
- 7:24:38conservation, it all goes hand in hand
- 7:24:40and that's going to help us get to net
- 7:24:41zero 2050 as well. And we are well on our
- 7:24:44way and specifically,
- 7:24:45specifically because of you guys'
- 7:24:46efforts. So thank you so
- 7:24:47much. Of course. Yeah. We're
- 7:24:49happy to do it and always, you know,
- 7:24:51happy to connect with residents. So if
- 7:24:53anyone ever has any,
- 7:24:54um, you know, if they ever have any
- 7:24:57questions or any thoughts,
- 7:24:59needs, whatever it may be,
- 7:25:00we're always open-eared and happy to
- 7:25:02help. Blaine, thank you. Yes.
- 7:25:04Thank you. And thank you for
- 7:25:07joining us. The city center podcast is
- 7:25:09well into its second full
- 7:25:10year of video podcasts and we've
- 7:25:13got a lot more in store for 2026. So feel
- 7:25:16free to follow or subscribe
- 7:25:17to get the latest from the
- 7:25:18city of West Palm Beach. This has been a
- 7:25:21production of the city of
- 7:25:22West Palm Beach Communications
- 7:25:24department. I'm Jerry
- 7:25:25Marcello. We'll see you next time.
