Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Nice morning, everybody. Here we go October thirty one on
- 0:03Speaker 1: the calendar. It is Halloween, and the government shutdown has
- 0:07Speaker 1: dragged on for a month. Scary proposition now for many Americans.
- 0:12Speaker 1: President Trump now pushing what he calls a nuclear option.
- 0:15Speaker 1: As we say, hello on a Friday, Let's make it
- 0:17Speaker 1: a good one. Dana's got the day off today. I'm
- 0:19Speaker 1: Bill Hammer live in New York City, and Jackie Heinrich
- 0:22Speaker 1: has been traveling all over the world, which he's in Washington,
- 0:25Speaker 1: d C. Today.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good morning, Jackie, Good morning, and I'm happy to be
- 0:28Speaker 2: with you.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Bill.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I'm Jackie Heinrich. This is America's newsroom. The impact of
- 0:32Speaker 2: the shutdown is getting worse day by day. Federal workers
- 0:35Speaker 2: turning to food banks to feed their families, Airport staffing
- 0:38Speaker 2: shortages are threatening to derail the holiday travel season, and
- 0:41Speaker 2: SNAP benefits are set to expire tomorrow.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I think a lot of people are very worried and
- 0:48Speaker 3: very troubled. Snap's been cut.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I'm on WICK, but it's still not even enough.
- 0:53Speaker 4: It's hard and with the price is going up on
- 0:56Speaker 4: everything's foodstamps doesn't even go as far as I used to.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Now, President Trump urging Senate Republicans that take dramatic action.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Here we go. He wants them to do something they've
- 1:06Speaker 1: long resisted, which is eliminate the filibuster.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Jackie Yeah, the President writes untruth Social quote. Because of
- 1:13Speaker 2: the fact that the Democrats have gone stone cold crazy,
- 1:16Speaker 2: the choice is clear. Initiate the nuclear option, get rid
- 1:19Speaker 2: of the filibuster, and make America great again. Alexandria Hoff
- 1:23Speaker 2: has more from the White House. Good morning, alex Well.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Senate Republicans who have pushed back against ending the filibuster
- 1:31Speaker 4: have argued that it weakens the minority party. It lowers
- 1:34Speaker 4: that threshold from sixty votes down to a simple majority,
- 1:38Speaker 4: and by weakening the minority Party, it would be very
- 1:40Speaker 4: useful right now. But it's also a position that they
- 1:43Speaker 4: see themselves in at some point in the future, and
- 1:45Speaker 4: President Trump acknowledged that.
- 1:46Speaker 1: In a truth Social post.
- 1:48Speaker 4: He also argued that any future Democrats Senate majority would
- 1:51Speaker 4: likely to just try and do that, but on their terms.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Giving this prompt, it is now time for the Republicans
- 1:57Speaker 4: to play their Trump card and go for what is
- 1:59Speaker 4: called the nuclear option. Get rid of the filibuster, and
- 2:02Speaker 4: get rid of it now. President also writing that previous
- 2:05Speaker 4: Democrat efforts were blocked by former Senators Joe Manchin and
- 2:09Speaker 4: Kristen Cinema, who are no longer in office now. Adding
- 2:12Speaker 4: some weight to all of this, four of the largest
- 2:14Speaker 4: US airlines are pushing for the passage of the Republican
- 2:17Speaker 4: back Continuing Resolution to reopen the government. Two of those
- 2:20Speaker 4: airlines plus union representatives meeting with Vice President Vance yesterday
- 2:24Speaker 4: at the White House.
- 2:27Speaker 5: Clean cr and get that negotiation done behind closed doors,
- 2:30Speaker 5: without the pressure, without putting the American workers in the
- 2:33Speaker 5: American economy at risk.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Now the layser around the country already stacking up. Vice
- 2:37Speaker 4: President Vance fears what a prolonged shutdown would mean for
- 2:40Speaker 4: the upcoming travel holiday season.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Look, it could be a disaster. It really could be,
- 2:46Speaker 5: because at that point you're talking about people have missed
- 2:48Speaker 5: three paychecks, they've missed four paychecks. How many of them
- 2:52Speaker 5: are not going to show for work. We want the
- 2:54Speaker 5: aviation industry to work. It's not going to work unless
- 2:58Speaker 5: the Democrats reopened the government.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Delays and ground stop stops were impacted by staffing shortages
- 3:05Speaker 4: yesterday at several airports around the country, including in New York, Orlando, Dallas,
- 3:09Speaker 4: and Right here in DC.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Guys, all right, Alex Hof, thank you so much so Jackie.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Our lead guest today is a former House speaker who's
- 3:18Speaker 1: been through this many times. Kevin McCarthy, Good morning to you,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and thanks for coming back.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Mark.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I want to read you an opinion piece out of
- 3:25Speaker 1: USA today. All Right, Democrats look ready to cave on
- 3:28Speaker 1: their shutdown while Trump stays above the fray. Democrats may
- 3:31Speaker 1: like to tempt voters with taxpayer page freebies, but it's
- 3:35Speaker 1: a bad deal for Americans, she continues. Republicans aren't likely
- 3:38Speaker 1: to budge on this, and they shouldn't. In the end,
- 3:41Speaker 1: Democrats will only succeed in reinforcing the view the country
- 3:45Speaker 1: already holds that they are weak. They're going to cave.
- 3:49Speaker 1: We've been saying that for weeks. Hasn't happened.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Well, look, I try. I call this shutdown the Seinfeld
- 3:56Speaker 3: shutdown because it's really about nothing. It is shoe having
- 4:00Speaker 3: political pressure. Now I believe it's about to end. You're
- 4:03Speaker 3: having early signs of it. The largest government employee union
- 4:08Speaker 3: has now asked them to pass the continuing resolution. You've
- 4:12Speaker 3: got the election November fourth coming. I think right after
- 4:16Speaker 3: that election, Schumer will then lift and take this pain
- 4:19Speaker 3: away because maybe Democrats have a good night, but he
- 4:22Speaker 3: doesn't want to do anything before that election to disturb it.
- 4:26Speaker 3: He will then have the record for the longest shutdown.
- 4:29Speaker 3: So if it's about nothing and just his weakness in
- 4:31Speaker 3: political leadership, he could say he did that and move on.
- 4:35Speaker 3: But too many people are being hurt now it's gone
- 4:38Speaker 3: on way too long. It's not about anything, which makes
- 4:40Speaker 3: it more difficult to get out. So that's why coming
- 4:44Speaker 3: after November fourth, the fifth, or the sixth, I see
- 4:46Speaker 3: as an opportunity that Okay.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So we'll put you down for about another week. Here's JD. Vans,
- 4:52Speaker 1: the Vice President, exactly that point. Watch here.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Here is our very simple proposals to the Democrats. Let's
- 4:59Speaker 5: sit down and come to a compromise and work it out.
- 5:01Speaker 5: And you know what the Democrats' response to that is
- 5:04Speaker 5: give us everything we want or we're going to shut
- 5:06Speaker 5: down the government and keep it shut down. That is
- 5:08Speaker 5: not reasonable behavior. That's not how you do compromise in
- 5:10Speaker 5: this down.
- 5:11Speaker 1: How about this idea, if the issue is Obamacare credits
- 5:15Speaker 1: and healthcare subsidies, why not go ahead and open the
- 5:19Speaker 1: government back up again, because you're going to have a
- 5:22Speaker 1: Republicans are going to have to come into agreement as
- 5:24Speaker 1: to what they find acceptable for healthcare subsidies, and then
- 5:28Speaker 1: the voters ultimately are going to side whether or not
- 5:30Speaker 1: they like the outcome. And next November will tell us
- 5:34Speaker 1: whether or not Democrats are right on this fighter Republicans,
- 5:37Speaker 1: how about that.
- 5:39Speaker 3: That's very true, and that debate is really for later
- 5:42Speaker 3: in this year. And you've have Republicans on the record
- 5:45Speaker 3: saying they would keep some of those they want it modified,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and that's really where the negotiation should go. You've got
- 5:52Speaker 3: a willing White House willing to negotiate, You've got Republicans
- 5:56Speaker 3: willing to negotiate. They're keeping What the viewer has to understand,
- 6:00Speaker 3: a continuing resolution is simply keeping government open the way
- 6:04Speaker 3: it is while you work through the appropriations process. And
- 6:08Speaker 3: for some reason the Democrats say no, it goes all
- 6:11Speaker 3: back to you. Look at Schumer. He voted for this
- 6:15Speaker 3: thirteen times, but he got a lot of political pressure
- 6:18Speaker 3: when the other parties in power. Look, I've been on
- 6:21Speaker 3: the other side of the aisle of this. I watched
- 6:23Speaker 3: the Republicans do this by a mistake in thirteen We
- 6:26Speaker 3: gain nothing from it, and we are able to come
- 6:29Speaker 3: back even after.
- 6:30Speaker 1: That quickly on this do they take up the filibuster
- 6:34Speaker 1: idea on behalf of the commander in chief? I think
- 6:37Speaker 1: that's going to fly.
- 6:38Speaker 5: You know.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I I have a fear that's actually what Schumer wants
- 6:43Speaker 3: because it makes him not having to make a political decision.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I think after this election November fourth, there's a perfect
- 6:49Speaker 3: opportunity for everybody to sit down, open this government back up.
- 6:53Speaker 3: You really watch the polls. The public is beginning to
- 6:56Speaker 3: see that it's probably the weakest Democrat leadership we ever had.
- 6:59Speaker 3: And jakeem and you're going to watch in this election
- 7:03Speaker 3: new people get elected further to the left, and they're
- 7:07Speaker 3: fearful for their jobs, and I think people are going
- 7:09Speaker 3: to move beyond them.
- 7:10Speaker 1: As someone once said, elections have consequences, and we will
- 7:13Speaker 1: find out come ones this day. Thank you, sir Kevin McCarthy,
- 7:16Speaker 1: thanks for coming back. I'm Steve Doocy, I'm Brian Kilney
