Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back.
- 0:13Speaker 2: What's going on, everybody. It's Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan.
- 0:16Speaker 1: We're starting to come to the end of our Eagles
- 0:19Speaker 1: contract podcast series. We did offense last week, we've been
- 0:22Speaker 1: doing defense this week. We've started in the front seven
- 0:25Speaker 1: and moved our way to the back and in this
- 0:28Speaker 1: episode we're going to talk about a really interesting contract
- 0:31Speaker 1: situation surrounding the Eagles corners. We'll get into that in
- 0:36Speaker 1: a second. First, just some transactional news, Adam, that probably
- 0:41Speaker 1: is not very surprising with Joe Tryon Shoyinka.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Being placed on the reserve tired list.
- 0:49Speaker 1: My radar was up when not when he was missing
- 0:51Speaker 1: the a little bit when he was missing the voluntary camps,
- 0:54Speaker 1: because a new guy tends to show up to those,
- 0:57Speaker 1: But then when you miss the mandatory camps, you know
- 0:59Speaker 1: something's up.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yeah, as we talked about when he signed, it was
- 1:03Speaker 3: surprising because they really didn't need it. They really didn't
- 1:07Speaker 3: based on the way that Fangio rotates his edges. He
- 1:11Speaker 3: only plays three, they dressed four. There was really no
- 1:13Speaker 3: room for him, and we knew he was not going
- 1:16Speaker 3: to make the team, I mean, unless it was injured.
- 1:18Speaker 3: He was going to make it, and he did miss
- 1:20Speaker 3: the two mandatory practices. You know, it's interesting you kind
- 1:24Speaker 3: of knew that this was gonna happen when there's no
- 1:26Speaker 3: there was no reporting on why he missed and whether
- 1:29Speaker 3: it was excused or not. And then and then you know,
- 1:33Speaker 3: they added an edge on Monday, So you knew this
- 1:38Speaker 3: was coming most likely, and that's what happened. So that's
- 1:41Speaker 3: where it was at.
- 1:43Speaker 1: It's funny how the Eagles have sort of been bit
- 1:45Speaker 1: by this like off season retirement bug or even I
- 1:48Speaker 1: mean last year in season it was Darius Smith, who
- 1:51Speaker 1: I believe it has been asked to be reinstated right
- 1:53Speaker 1: he wants he's thinking about maybe playing again.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I thought, I believe I saw a report from a
- 1:58Speaker 2: chefter on that.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But either way, they get bit by his retirement bug
- 2:02Speaker 1: last year kind of forced them to have the trade for.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Jial and Phillips.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And then remember Devonte Parker, Uh, he retired right around
- 2:10Speaker 1: this time, I think a couple of years ago, the
- 2:12Speaker 1: wide receiver. And then there was the linebacker from the
- 2:15Speaker 1: Charger Jatavis Brown. Was that is that the right name?
- 2:18Speaker 2: You remember him from?
- 2:19Speaker 3: Like the LA Chargers. Yeah, Jatavis Brendan. Yeah, and then uh,
- 2:23Speaker 3: then there was the he never wound up playing for
- 2:26Speaker 3: Marquis Goodwin good one. Yeah. Remember they had to revoke
- 2:30Speaker 3: the trade because he wound up not reporting and then
- 2:33Speaker 3: he reverted back to the forty nine ers. So yeah,
- 2:35Speaker 3: they've yeah, they've had some things happen.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, so, uh, just an interesting situation.
- 2:42Speaker 1: But you know, the Eagles brought in a j Ampiness
- 2:44Speaker 1: and we we talked about their edge group, about their
- 2:46Speaker 1: interior d line group.
- 2:48Speaker 2: They've got enough bodies there. Yeah.
- 2:49Speaker 3: And and by the way, Epiness is so different from
- 2:51Speaker 3: what they have because he's really a run defender who's
- 2:54Speaker 3: got had some sacks, right, but you could use guys
- 2:56Speaker 3: like that, and he's a veteran, he's not. He's a
- 2:57Speaker 3: good player.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah, And we should also let folks know that they
- 3:04Speaker 3: did sign former Dolphins fourth round receiver Eric Azukama, who
- 3:08Speaker 3: there was a lot of hype on him. I think
- 3:10Speaker 3: he came out of Texas Tech and it just he
- 3:13Speaker 3: was a fourth round pick in twenty twenty two. He
- 3:15Speaker 3: really he good size. He was cut two years ago
- 3:19Speaker 3: and he really he was cut before last season and
- 3:22Speaker 3: he really never made it. He's been in the UFL.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And then they also signed Sean Wade, who's a corner
- 3:29Speaker 3: who's been sort of a fringe NFL player for a
- 3:32Speaker 3: little bit. It's been around a little bit. And then
- 3:35Speaker 3: they also cut uh to make room because they had
- 3:37Speaker 3: to make one more move. Is they they waved Brandon Johnson,
- 3:41Speaker 3: who certainly could come back later because they needed they
- 3:45Speaker 3: need to find room. Who he was a nickel who
- 3:48Speaker 3: who's the guy's even if even if he does come back,
- 3:51Speaker 3: it's unlikely he'll make it. It's a guy who who
- 3:54Speaker 3: kind of has I would call him good practice squad value.
- 3:58Speaker 3: He's got some versus till he to play nickel and
- 4:01Speaker 3: play safety.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I was surprised that he was the one to go.
- 4:05Speaker 1: You know, they you mentioned they cross trained him at safety.
- 4:07Speaker 1: They played him there in that season eight and that
- 4:09Speaker 1: week eighteen game. I you know, I thought that he
- 4:12Speaker 1: felt that he was on the practice squad most of
- 4:14Speaker 1: the last year, so I would have thought he had
- 4:16Speaker 1: that and again he can come back, but there's like
- 4:18Speaker 1: ninety guys on the roster, so I was surprised he
- 4:20Speaker 1: was the one that had to go. But we'll see
- 4:22Speaker 1: what happens with him in the future. You mentioned that
- 4:25Speaker 1: the receiver that they picked up was with the Dolphins, right.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah, arc Asukama, fourth rounder and twenty two. Yeah he
- 4:32Speaker 3: so twenty two?
- 4:32Speaker 1: Okay, so he was Josh Grizzard was with the Dolphins,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I believe in two thousand.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yep, that's he that has something to do with it.
- 4:39Speaker 3: I'm sure knows the terminology. Sorrey knows him. This is
- 4:44Speaker 3: what I can tell you about that Asukama. He's got talent,
- 4:46Speaker 3: he just had some injury. He just never could get there.
- 4:50Speaker 3: So you move on. Again, it's it's a depth training
- 4:52Speaker 3: camp signing right, super high up unlikely to make it.
- 4:57Speaker 3: You never know if the light goes on where he
- 4:59Speaker 3: comes out of nowhere, which is for rush spot. But
- 5:01Speaker 3: again it's super highly unlikely. But again West Coast offense
- 5:05Speaker 3: and knows the terminology. Practice squad guy, this is good.
- 5:07Speaker 3: This is guy developing your practice squad who knows.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I thought that that there was an opportunity for James Proche,
- 5:13Speaker 1: who had you know, worked out with the team and
- 5:15Speaker 1: it has punt return ability and not a lot of
- 5:18Speaker 1: Eagles right now have it. I thought that there would
- 5:19Speaker 1: be an opportunity for him and maybe there will be
- 5:21Speaker 1: down the road, but it.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Doesn't look like that will happen at the moment.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Let's let's get into our corner back situation, and this
- 5:30Speaker 1: is we're gonna do cornerbacks and Nichols, despite what Vic
- 5:33Speaker 1: Fangio might say. We will separate them as best we
- 5:36Speaker 1: can in this episode and then we'll finish it off
- 5:39Speaker 1: in the next one with safeties.
- 5:41Speaker 2: But to me, Adam, the.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Big thing to discuss is and really enlighten people on,
- 5:47Speaker 1: is that you have two guys in Quinnon Mitchell, right
- 5:51Speaker 1: and Cooper to gen as a Nicol who are going
- 5:55Speaker 1: to go into their third seasons, and at the end
- 5:58Speaker 1: of their third seasons, you would think the Eagles would
- 6:01Speaker 1: want to lock them up.
- 6:02Speaker 2: They're both very good players.
- 6:03Speaker 1: However, both could be in store for a real market type.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I mean, certainly Quinnon Mitchell, but also the fifth year
- 6:11Speaker 1: option sort of gives the Eagles a little bit more
- 6:14Speaker 1: time on Quinnon Mitchell, whereas Cooper to Jen is a
- 6:18Speaker 1: second round pick only as four years. I could see
- 6:20Speaker 1: his contract getting done first. If that's the route the
- 6:24Speaker 1: Eagles go, like, yeah, they really do want.
- 6:29Speaker 3: To keep them, you know, they don't let these things
- 6:31Speaker 3: go man, they just have never done it. I mean
- 6:33Speaker 3: they really don't. Yes, David, they extended Davis's contract with
- 6:40Speaker 3: the fifth year option just as a placeholder, but they
- 6:42Speaker 3: still extended him, right, So you know it's coming, you
- 6:46Speaker 3: know it's it's This is what we've been talking about lately.
- 6:49Speaker 3: We talked about last week. When you're drafting really well,
- 6:53Speaker 3: when you don't mess on on a lot of high
- 6:55Speaker 3: round picks and you have good free agents who have
- 6:57Speaker 3: worked out, you're eventually have to pay the piper. Someone's
- 7:01Speaker 3: gonna have to go. But these guys are not going.
- 7:03Speaker 3: They're not going anywhere. Quina Mitchell's going to be here.
- 7:05Speaker 3: In fact of scouting. Term on him now is from
- 7:08Speaker 3: people I know if Greater's tape, he's got gold jacket
- 7:11Speaker 3: gold jacket ability. That means he's really really good. The
- 7:16Speaker 3: only thing he doesn't do is get a lot of interceptions. Right,
- 7:19Speaker 3: he didn't in college was he didn't have great hands.
- 7:21Speaker 3: But his coveragtability is elite. He's got everything you want.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Uh He's I'm just looking at some of the cornerback deals,
- 7:28Speaker 3: you know, the Jasey Horn and certain uh Stan got
- 7:33Speaker 3: twenty four million a year. I mean, I got to
- 7:36Speaker 3: think by the time Quinnon gets his deal, we got
- 7:39Speaker 3: approach thirty million a season.
- 7:40Speaker 2: God, didn't McDuffie. Didn't McDuffie just get.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Thirty got thirty Yeah, McDuffie, Yes, that's right, m duffney.
- 7:45Speaker 2: The number starts higher for Mitchell than I remember.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Now McDuffie plays inside or outside. Yeah, so yes, it
- 7:53Speaker 3: starts at thirty. McDuffie got actually thirty one million the Rams. Now,
- 7:59Speaker 3: one thing I should tell you from talking to agents,
- 8:01Speaker 3: they historically overpay they they do. I mean, give Kevin
- 8:05Speaker 3: dem Off credit. They pay man who's president of the
- 8:09Speaker 3: team and he's done contracts forever. These people work under
- 8:12Speaker 3: him because Kevin's god. He oversees it, nugets, he oversees
- 8:15Speaker 3: a lot of properties for the Kronky family. But they
- 8:20Speaker 3: they they're paying four years thirty one million a season. Okay, yep.
- 8:29Speaker 3: That so he's a pure corner is is quinyon? So
- 8:34Speaker 3: actually it now you you know, I totally forgot about McDuffie.
- 8:36Speaker 3: So now that that's the that's the floor. Yeah, the
- 8:39Speaker 3: floor thirty one.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you have Sauce Gardner instantly also at thirty. So,
- 8:43Speaker 1: like you said, the floor has got to be thirty
- 8:45Speaker 1: to thirty one.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Of course, I'm sorry, right, thirty one, I stand corrected
- 8:49Speaker 3: the FLOORID absolutely have to be thirty one. Sure, Sauce Gardener,
- 8:53Speaker 3: who obviously was treated he got and that's interesting. He
- 8:57Speaker 3: really has not played as well before he got thirty
- 8:59Speaker 3: point one million.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Who is the other corner Stingley?
- 9:03Speaker 3: Right?
- 9:03Speaker 2: Did he's not at thirty? I believe he's a.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Thirty Stingley of the Texans.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Good player.
- 9:08Speaker 3: God, Yeah, Derek Stingley's date of execution of the contract
- 9:12Speaker 3: was March of It was signed in March eighteenth, twenty
- 9:17Speaker 3: twenty five. Okay, so last time he's yeah he actually
- 9:21Speaker 3: I don't. I hate to say. Only god, he got
- 9:23Speaker 3: up just under twenty seven million. The duffy thing blew
- 9:27Speaker 3: the thing out of the water. So yeah, look and
- 9:29Speaker 3: then and then we'll get to coop later because he's
- 9:32Speaker 3: not a corner right now, Reeke Wollan. As we move on,
- 9:36Speaker 3: Reek Wollan, he's on a one year deal. Now. If
- 9:41Speaker 3: he balls out like again, it's only OTA's which means
- 9:45Speaker 3: next to nothing. It's not indicator of anything to balance
- 9:47Speaker 3: with you because you can't hit you keep it. There's
- 9:50Speaker 3: really no physical contact. He's healthy, he could run. He
- 9:53Speaker 3: look great, but that's the first step of many for him.
- 9:56Speaker 3: But he looked good. He signed a one year deal
- 9:59Speaker 3: with twelve million. They guaranteed all of it. So the
- 10:04Speaker 3: question will be if he's killing it for eight, nine,
- 10:06Speaker 3: ten weeks. That's how he's done this before, not a lot.
- 10:09Speaker 3: But he can go to the agent. Well, you could
- 10:11Speaker 3: talk to the agent any time. He's a vested veteran.
- 10:13Speaker 3: You could talk to him. You could start, you could
- 10:14Speaker 3: start in August. If you have a great camp, just
- 10:16Speaker 3: get the ball rolling. But his contract would be fascinating
- 10:19Speaker 3: because how do you do that one?
- 10:20Speaker 2: If I don't think it's possible to be honest with you,
- 10:23Speaker 2: I think you say, way, thank you, you played great.
- 10:27Speaker 1: You're gonna go sign a five year, one hundred and
- 10:30Speaker 1: fifty five million dollar contract with somebody, and we're gonna
- 10:32Speaker 1: get a great comp pick. Because this goes back to
- 10:35Speaker 1: the unpopular move sometime in the future that I keep
- 10:39Speaker 1: talking about. It could be letting a player like that go,
- 10:41Speaker 1: or you decide you want to commit to Quinna Mitchell
- 10:44Speaker 1: and Riequillan as you're outside corners going forward, and then.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Cooper de Jean isn't a part of your core.
- 10:50Speaker 1: There's just no way you're gonna play all three of
- 10:52Speaker 1: those guys along with Davis, along with Carter potentially Jaylex
- 10:55Speaker 1: Hunt still got Grenard.
- 10:57Speaker 2: This year and next year at Jomo. Yeah. And by
- 11:00Speaker 2: the way, you have a very expensive offense even without
- 11:02Speaker 2: a j. Brown. I mean it's you have to move
- 11:04Speaker 2: off of several different people to make this thing.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I don't you know you brought this up. You open
- 11:08Speaker 3: a can of worms. It's really really hard. It's it's
- 11:12Speaker 3: the price of drafting well and having good, good, good
- 11:16Speaker 3: free agents who actually you signed from other teams like
- 11:19Speaker 3: Barkley and the Granard. Well, Granard hasn't played yet for
- 11:23Speaker 3: an Eagles for the Eagles, but you feel pretty good
- 11:25Speaker 3: about him. Yeah, how he does not have a good history.
- 11:30Speaker 3: He walked away from Milton Williams Like they didn't They
- 11:34Speaker 3: kind of knew where that was going, Like they had
- 11:36Speaker 3: I know for a fact, they had talks with the agents.
- 11:38Speaker 3: They kind of had some concepts of what this might
- 11:40Speaker 3: look like. They knew they couldn't get there. They just
- 11:43Speaker 3: couldn't do it. Like on your point, you can't. You
- 11:45Speaker 3: have to walk away at some point you can't have
- 11:47Speaker 3: the highest paid team in NFL history, Like, there's no
- 11:50Speaker 3: luxury tax. Okay, we'll just go over to the luxury tax.
- 11:52Speaker 3: This is spaceball. Yeah, and from a cash ben, you
- 11:55Speaker 3: know their cash ben organizationally, it has been down in
- 11:57Speaker 3: I don't know, three or four years.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it picked.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's it's it's hard. It's it's gonna be hard. Uh,
- 12:06Speaker 3: but I'm not quite riequellin just because of what happened
- 12:12Speaker 3: in Seattle. You have to be careful of paying guys
- 12:14Speaker 3: like that because you never know what happens when you
- 12:16Speaker 3: pay him. They play as do they play as well?
- 12:18Speaker 3: This is a this is what Eagles used to love
- 12:21Speaker 3: to do is sign players and one year deals. We're
- 12:24Speaker 3: hungry to get the big deal to settle their future.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Joe Banner told us that the Egles former president, they
- 12:32Speaker 3: had a history of doing that. Yep, either either resigning
- 12:35Speaker 3: their guys for one year when they couldn't get them
- 12:36Speaker 3: to a long term deal, or signing guys from another team.
- 12:39Speaker 3: So it's fascinating. Uh, we'll see where that goes. But
- 12:43Speaker 3: here's the problem, folks. Jonathan Jones, who turns thirty three,
- 12:47Speaker 3: he's in a one year deal. Jacquoryan Bennett who's not
- 12:49Speaker 3: worked out yet, he's in a one year deal. Ringo
- 12:51Speaker 3: doesn't factor in the corner anyway. He's just a special
- 12:53Speaker 3: teams player. So they don't have a future if Woolan
- 12:56Speaker 3: does not come back. There's no future on this football
- 12:59Speaker 3: team a corner of the Mitchell other than.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Mitchell, right, which is why you had made a great
- 13:03Speaker 1: point this past draft. We shouldn't have ruled corner back
- 13:06Speaker 1: out early. It didn't manifest that way. But if you
- 13:09Speaker 1: looked down the road, you didn't necessarily see a whole
- 13:13Speaker 1: lot of depth or any behind Mitchell at outside young
- 13:17Speaker 1: homegrown depth there, especially with the Gene being a movable
- 13:19Speaker 1: piece that we weren't sure they would even commit to
- 13:22Speaker 1: outside corner, and now it looks like he's gonna play
- 13:24Speaker 1: safety in Nickel. So, I mean, when you're talking about
- 13:26Speaker 1: where where might the Eagles be drafting high in the
- 13:29Speaker 1: next year or two, if the ifrig Walm's not with
- 13:32Speaker 1: the team, and if the Gene's going to be a
- 13:34Speaker 1: movable piece still and part of the team.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Then it's gonna have to be a corner. Because you're right,
- 13:38Speaker 2: they've got a lot of bodies, but that's not good depth.
- 13:42Speaker 3: No, no, no, it's the quality. But may have mac
- 13:44Speaker 3: McWilliams had of Some people say, talk about macwick williams.
- 13:46Speaker 3: We'll talk about him, but he couldn't get on the
- 13:48Speaker 3: field right and he's sort of a nickel corner. Good build,
- 13:55Speaker 3: very well liked in the Scouted community. Just it was
- 13:57Speaker 3: a year one. It's it's he's got three years left,
- 13:59Speaker 3: seventy five. Some of a contract is years two through four.
- 14:02Speaker 3: We'll see what happens, but it's a problem. Now. I'm
- 14:04Speaker 3: gonna one real quick story, this forty five second story. Yeah,
- 14:08Speaker 3: some years ago, I was sitting at the owner's meetings,
- 14:11Speaker 3: sitting with a bunch of contract and go to negotiators
- 14:13Speaker 3: and some gms, and we're just talking in general, like
- 14:16Speaker 3: what happens when you've got like one side of the
- 14:19Speaker 3: football is really really good and you don't want to
- 14:20Speaker 3: walk away from the contracts. Well, you could just keep drafting.
- 14:24Speaker 3: You just brought this up and passing. You just keep
- 14:26Speaker 3: drafting and not retaining. You just keep drafting the replacement,
- 14:30Speaker 3: keep drafting the replaced, because you can't keep bringing them
- 14:32Speaker 3: back because there's it's because you have a cap right,
- 14:36Speaker 3: and you some owners are not. Not every owner is
- 14:39Speaker 3: so generous, like the Lori family owner. You know they're not.
- 14:43Speaker 3: They spend money. They want to spend cash over cap.
- 14:46Speaker 3: So there was a we were going around that like
- 14:48Speaker 3: I was just listening because you know, they were nice
- 14:50Speaker 3: enough to let me sit there, and I was just
- 14:52Speaker 3: hearing the discussion. You know what, some we just might
- 14:54Speaker 3: have to let these guys walk and just keep drafting
- 14:56Speaker 3: the replacements and then after four years let that group
- 14:59Speaker 3: walk the keep d from the replacements because you can't
- 15:01Speaker 3: keep everybody. This can bring him back to our discussion.
- 15:04Speaker 3: How he may have to do that, Like that's that's
- 15:06Speaker 3: where they're at. Is the price of drafting, developing well
- 15:10Speaker 3: and having good coaches. You can't keep everybody just and
- 15:14Speaker 3: then you get compects taking this a step further. You
- 15:17Speaker 3: mentioned it in passing earlier. You may have to woolen.
- 15:20Speaker 3: If he's killing it, you know, maybe he get maybe
- 15:23Speaker 3: they could get I don't know if to get it.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I'd be curious about what's because helmet if he balls
- 15:28Speaker 3: out and I know he has rare size and athletic ability,
- 15:31Speaker 3: but you have the Seattle tape, which was no matter
- 15:33Speaker 3: what Vic says. I know Vic likes him. He found
- 15:35Speaker 3: some tape you like, But why are the hell will
- 15:37Speaker 3: they trying to trade him? Who knew they were trying
- 15:39Speaker 3: to move him last October? Right, he's a guy. Theoretically,
- 15:43Speaker 3: You're right, Howie can't keep everyone here. That on surface,
- 15:46Speaker 3: they should walk away from him. But I know from
- 15:50Speaker 3: talking to the agents and other clubs and people have
- 15:52Speaker 3: worked for Howie over the years, it pains them forget
- 15:56Speaker 3: for players they got right and they've developed, to let
- 15:58Speaker 3: them walk. But you cannot keep everybody, and that's where
- 16:01Speaker 3: they're at.
- 16:02Speaker 1: It can't be easy to have watched Milton Williams dominate
- 16:05Speaker 1: for the Patriots and take him to a super Bowl,
- 16:07Speaker 1: even even as good as the Eagles were up front.
- 16:10Speaker 2: It's just tough.
- 16:10Speaker 1: You don't want to see guys that you drafted and
- 16:13Speaker 1: developed go somewhere else.
- 16:15Speaker 2: I mean, you do. You're thankful for like you get
- 16:17Speaker 2: a high draft you got they got a third round
- 16:19Speaker 2: pick because of it.
- 16:20Speaker 1: You know, the compic game is very important, but picks
- 16:23Speaker 1: or picks until they become really good players there that
- 16:26Speaker 1: guy was a really good player.
- 16:28Speaker 3: At one point on that like you could live with
- 16:30Speaker 3: Josh shob Josh job did nothing here. He correct absolutely
- 16:34Speaker 3: did nothing here. They gave him a shot. Vic kind
- 16:37Speaker 3: of told the truth right when when he was the
- 16:39Speaker 3: media asked about him. He just didn't. He didn't perform.
- 16:42Speaker 3: There's nothing he can do about that now, Guys in
- 16:43Speaker 3: a trade creation anyway, it's when got Sometimes when players,
- 16:48Speaker 3: no matter what team it is, they're just coaches get
- 16:50Speaker 3: down on a player where maybe the front office and
- 16:52Speaker 3: the coach staff don't agree on it, but you know
- 16:55Speaker 3: you don't at a point you don't want to force
- 16:58Speaker 3: a player on the jam should never I'm not saying
- 17:01Speaker 3: how he does it, but you don't want to force
- 17:02Speaker 3: a player on the coaches actually talking to their coaches.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Over the years, he does a relatively good job for saying,
- 17:09Speaker 3: you know what, gott say, can't play, We're gonna cut them.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Then we're gonna trade them. You know. But like I
- 17:14Speaker 3: know Pumphrey, Donal Pumpfrey. He the word with that staff
- 17:17Speaker 3: you know nine years ago, was like he he it
- 17:20Speaker 3: was obviously he couldn't play in the NFL. He's too small. Yeah,
- 17:22Speaker 3: But to how his credit sometimes he's like, look, let's
- 17:25Speaker 3: give a guy shot right after your one. If he
- 17:28Speaker 3: can't do it. Okay, let's punt. Yeah. So it's a
- 17:31Speaker 3: push and pull, you know, on the stuff.

- 18:47Speaker 4: pros camedn Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an
- 18:52Speaker 4: experience made for Philly fans twenty one and up. Getting
- 18:55Speaker 4: back to the gene for a second, what makes this
- 18:57Speaker 4: very complex is good luck.
- 19:00Speaker 1: What we have pointed out is that you're you're at
- 19:03Speaker 1: a different price point if you're an outside corner and
- 19:05Speaker 1: you made a Pro Bowl compared to if you're a
- 19:07Speaker 1: nickel and made a Pro Bowl compared to if you're
- 19:09Speaker 1: a safety. But the issue that the egos are going
- 19:11Speaker 1: to face here is I don't see any way to
- 19:15Speaker 1: a discount because if you look at just players who
- 19:17Speaker 1: are comparable, who are used comparably, like a Kyle Hamilton,
- 19:21Speaker 1: for example, or a Marlon Humphrey, guys who play those
- 19:23Speaker 1: guys are making top market money. Like Kyle Hamilton's the
- 19:27Speaker 1: second highest paid safety. He plays safety nickel in the
- 19:31Speaker 1: in the NFL right now, and it's like twenty five
- 19:33Speaker 1: million years good one.
- 19:36Speaker 3: That's a good comp That's I know he's not a corner,
- 19:39Speaker 3: m hm. But he plays jack linebacker. He plays safety, right,
- 19:44Speaker 3: he's movable. You know, they use him in a specific
- 19:48Speaker 3: way like actually they they see him as a moveable
- 19:51Speaker 3: chess piece. Yep, we Coop. They have to find some
- 19:55Speaker 3: sort of comp like I I touch to Quentin Lake,
- 19:58Speaker 3: who's the the Rams sort of do it all defensive
- 20:01Speaker 3: back safety. Yeah, Quinton, He was explaining how they they've
- 20:07Speaker 3: moved him around a little bit in his career. He
- 20:09Speaker 3: might remember his dad, Carnell Lake. Yeah, played for the Steelers,
- 20:12Speaker 3: is a safety. But Quentin Lake, it's been a nice
- 20:16Speaker 3: stary development. He's only making, only making because he's not
- 20:19Speaker 3: dynamic like Kyle.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Is he in a rookie deal or is?
- 20:22Speaker 3: I know he got extension right at the end of
- 20:25Speaker 3: last year December thirty first, twenty five was the date
- 20:28Speaker 3: of the signing of the contract, right, twelve seven to
- 20:31Speaker 3: five a year, twelve million, seven to fifty. So Hamilton
- 20:37Speaker 3: has to be it like that. There's no way in
- 20:39Speaker 3: hell Coop's getting thirty million year. I don't care how
- 20:41Speaker 3: great he is. He's not a corner, he's not.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Right, But the point is, the point is twenty five million.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Is it's a break, but it's not that much of
- 20:50Speaker 1: a break. It's not like, oh that's way more. No, no, no,
- 20:53Speaker 1: thirty five to million.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Nay, Mitchell, it's hard, man, it's really hard to find.
- 20:58Speaker 3: I think you nailed it, Kyle Hamilton. Him is the
- 21:01Speaker 3: only one who's close because not that he's getting tagged,
- 21:05Speaker 3: but if it came to that, I'd be shocked if
- 21:08Speaker 3: Dick because he goes won't let that happen. I don't
- 21:10Speaker 3: want to use the tag, and they just they want
- 21:13Speaker 3: these guys locked up for years. You know, the one
- 21:16Speaker 3: hunter their team controlled. It's you don't. It's it's how
- 21:21Speaker 3: you build your roster, like this is why they do it.
- 21:23Speaker 3: So twenty five one in me is very fair. You
- 21:27Speaker 3: can't go corner money. You can't go to McDuffie. Hell,
- 21:30Speaker 3: he's not a corner you have to look at. But no,
- 21:32Speaker 3: what I'm saying about the franchise tag is it's the
- 21:34Speaker 3: position you played the most the previous season. We brought
- 21:38Speaker 3: up to Jimmy Graham example of they wanted because he
- 21:42Speaker 3: was just because he played the slot. You know, he
- 21:44Speaker 3: wanted more than tight end money. And Bill Pallias talked
- 21:48Speaker 3: about that when they had him as a witness for
- 21:50Speaker 3: the league, and that Bill said like they had no chance. Yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 3: he was not, he was not He was not a
- 21:55Speaker 3: slot receiver.
- 21:56Speaker 1: So that would work against the Eagles because most likely
- 22:00Speaker 1: Gene will play more snaps at nickel than safety. It'll
- 22:03Speaker 1: be it might be closer than like last year. But
- 22:05Speaker 1: but there is no nickel franchise tag.
- 22:07Speaker 3: It's just yet, right, right, and that you're not gonna
- 22:10Speaker 3: want to let it come to that.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Yeah, And you're not gonna pay him like a franchise
- 22:13Speaker 2: tag for a corner when he's not.
- 22:15Speaker 3: A momb Right, But if I'm Coop's agents, I'm abstulally
- 22:20Speaker 3: using Hamilton, I'm gonna look, you could add, Look, it's
- 22:23Speaker 3: a free world. You ask for whatever you want. You
- 22:24Speaker 3: can have for thirty five million, but it's not getting done, right,
- 22:28Speaker 3: And because he was the second round pick, there's no
- 22:30Speaker 3: fifth year option. You don't also with you know, Coop
- 22:32Speaker 3: had a pretty big injury history. You're coming out of well,
- 22:37Speaker 3: he had an injury coming out of Io, and then
- 22:38Speaker 3: he got hurt again right over his rookie season. He
- 22:42Speaker 3: kept getting hurt and then he had an injury in
- 22:46Speaker 3: training camp and since then he's been pretty healthy. But
- 22:49Speaker 3: you don't want to take on that risk, and that
- 22:52Speaker 3: you called this two years ago, You talked about this
- 22:54Speaker 3: two years ago. How would his agents be happy with
- 22:56Speaker 3: him playing nickel? Right? Well, how could they be happy?
- 22:58Speaker 3: And I'm not playing corner anymore? The next level?
- 23:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's why I do think that what you'll
- 23:04Speaker 1: see a little bit of a I guess estimated guests
- 23:08Speaker 1: or educated guess, is that you pick up the fifth
- 23:10Speaker 1: year option on Mitchell, which, just like the with Jordan Davis,
- 23:14Speaker 1: it buys you an extra year of negotiation because he's
- 23:16Speaker 1: got he's he's not a free agent. The following year,
- 23:19Speaker 1: he still has the fifth year option.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Here's the problem.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And then you work on your your Cooper to gene
- 23:24Speaker 1: extension first and then you do Mitchell then the following year.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Well all right, it's easy for you to say that,
- 23:29Speaker 3: but you better be careful because are there any big
- 23:31Speaker 3: time corners or up for deals?
- 23:33Speaker 2: Well?
- 23:34Speaker 1: I was thinking, I thought, I feel like the big
- 23:37Speaker 1: time ones of sign there is now, so the market won't.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I mean, you never know what's going to happen in
- 23:41Speaker 1: free agency, but certain I think he just got a
- 23:44Speaker 1: little bit of a bump. Certain if I'm not mistaken,
- 23:47Speaker 1: Stingley Horn are all in their second Gardner is.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Going to have to a j Turell's got to get
- 23:53Speaker 3: a bump. He's only making twenty point five million.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Torell get a bump. I mean, Marlon Humphrey will
- 23:58Speaker 2: probably come up on that third con, but he's third.
- 24:00Speaker 2: I mean it'll be a shorter term deal.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I don't think that there's too many guys coming up
- 24:05Speaker 1: who are making like fifteen eighteen now that I really
- 24:08Speaker 1: worried about getting forty unless they become free agents and
- 24:11Speaker 1: somebody goes crazy.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Right, You're talking about like the Jalen Johnson's car.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Now he got this extension a debo Murphy Murphy got
- 24:20Speaker 1: got a contract last year.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Shar Various Ward.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I think the Eagles are in a good spot here,
- 24:26Speaker 1: not worrying about too many guys coming up and resetting
- 24:28Speaker 1: the market.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Other than Ajhl, I.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Had to be careful if you wait two years, if
- 24:34Speaker 3: you delay it, it's gonna cost you more money. They
- 24:37Speaker 3: don't do that. They really have not done that well.
- 24:39Speaker 2: He did with Jordan Davis. But although they needed Jordan
- 24:41Speaker 2: to prove that he deserved that contract, right.
- 24:43Speaker 3: But no, they wait, but they only get they gave
- 24:46Speaker 3: him a little bit more than Elle McNeil, and they
- 24:48Speaker 3: knew that because he's a No, he's not a sack guy, right,
- 24:51Speaker 3: he's not dexter Lawrence. If you've been dexter Lawrence, then
- 24:53Speaker 3: that might's gonna be way more. But he's not. Right,
- 24:56Speaker 3: So they were okay, just beating alle McNeil. But yeah,
- 25:00Speaker 3: it's it's going to be fascinating. It's they don't have
- 25:06Speaker 3: to finish this off here. The Nickels right now are
- 25:08Speaker 3: de Jene and as we've talked about, there might be
- 25:12Speaker 3: games he doesn't play nickel because of matchups. If if
- 25:15Speaker 3: a team's playing if a team's playing a lot of
- 25:20Speaker 3: a lot of eleven personnel, he's playing nickel. If they're
- 25:23Speaker 3: playing a lot of twelve personnel, he's playing safety. Yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 3: so it just depends on on the game. So we'll
- 25:28Speaker 3: have to see what happens there. Then your nickels right
- 25:30Speaker 3: now are Michael Carter's an expying contract Mac McWilliams. So
- 25:33Speaker 3: they're stopped. It's safe for excuse me nickel this season
- 25:37Speaker 3: and depending on what vic, Vic will make the decision
- 25:40Speaker 3: on where who plays after the season depends how he looks.
- 25:45Speaker 3: I just have this feeling he's We'll say, it's not
- 25:47Speaker 3: my call, but I've had this feeling he's not a
- 25:50Speaker 3: corner in VIC in Vicville.
- 25:52Speaker 1: We'll see, but that that Rams matchup, by the way,
- 25:56Speaker 1: to your point, I don't want to get too off
- 25:58Speaker 1: topic of contract, but what is it week three or
- 26:01Speaker 1: four the Rams? And I think that's gonna be a
- 26:04Speaker 1: fascinating sort of litmus test because you know they're gonna
- 26:07Speaker 1: live most likely in twelve and thirteen personnel the Rams
- 26:11Speaker 1: because they played They played thirty percent of thirteen personnel
- 26:13Speaker 1: last year, which is I'd.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Ever heard of in my entire life. Like the second
- 26:18Speaker 2: highest was the Steelers of twelve percent.
- 26:20Speaker 1: So they blew everybody out of the water with three
- 26:23Speaker 1: tight ends, and when they weren't in three tight ends,
- 26:25Speaker 1: they were in two tight ends. So I mean, this
- 26:27Speaker 1: is this is what this is why great question we're
- 26:29Speaker 1: talking about though, where Dezine is like almost exclusively a
- 26:32Speaker 1: safety or that.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Gave absolutely safety or VIC.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Is going to know that they pass a lot out
- 26:39Speaker 1: of those run looking formations, so he may still have
- 26:43Speaker 1: nickel out there.
- 26:44Speaker 2: It'll be very bad. That's what it's gonna be a
- 26:46Speaker 2: fascinating chess match.
- 26:48Speaker 3: They have so many tends. Now this they have a
- 26:50Speaker 3: bunch of tight ends expiring contracts after the season. But
- 26:53Speaker 3: they have so many tight ends.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yep, so many. Claire got Max Claire from Ohio staying
- 26:59Speaker 2: in there.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Yeah, And to be honest with you, I don't know
- 27:02Speaker 3: how good their third Jordan Winnington, Like they still they
- 27:05Speaker 3: really need a third receiver. You need to find someone
- 27:08Speaker 3: to compete against Whittington. Yep, because because right now they've
- 27:13Speaker 3: got Kolby Parkinson, who is a life saver in the
- 27:15Speaker 3: in the playoffs. Boy, he saved them against Carolina Higby.
- 27:18Speaker 3: He's always been solid. Turns Terrence Ferguson back to back
- 27:22Speaker 3: years of second round picks. And your guy Max Claire,
- 27:24Speaker 3: who you mentioned, oh, Davis Allen two is still it's
- 27:27Speaker 3: what are you going to play? Fourteen personnel?
- 27:30Speaker 2: Thein't gonna run the option, just run with these guys.
- 27:34Speaker 3: All person Yeah. Out of that of all coaches, Sean McVay,
- 27:38Speaker 3: like great Coachale says, you never really know like you
- 27:42Speaker 3: think you know, and then out of nowhere, Sean McVay
- 27:45Speaker 3: changes in season. Okay, we're just gonna start playing a
- 27:47Speaker 3: lot of third team. We're gonna leave the NFL of
- 27:48Speaker 3: all teams. You think Kyle Shanahan would do that.
- 27:51Speaker 2: No, No, And guess what team is going to copycat it?
- 27:55Speaker 3: Who?
- 27:55Speaker 2: Actually?
- 27:56Speaker 1: The Eagles playing Week three? They play the Rams week four.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Guess who's gonna be the copy cat?
- 28:00Speaker 2: In week three? On a Bear Bear Night football, the
- 28:04Speaker 2: Bears met with Lovelin with Roush. You know they're gonna throw.
- 28:09Speaker 2: But because Ben Johnson's McVeigh guy, right, he's gonna be
- 28:12Speaker 2: he is, he.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Is super smart, He's another guy sees the game differently. Yep,
- 28:17Speaker 3: you know it's fair.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I can't wait to do the like the snap looks
- 28:21Speaker 1: at looks for the for for Degene and the secondary
- 28:25Speaker 1: after the first four weeks of the season, and just
- 28:26Speaker 1: see what Vic's been doing.
- 28:28Speaker 3: So not only that, not only that that what you
- 28:31Speaker 3: just said on staff counts. That will be if Eagles
- 28:34Speaker 3: decide to extend Coop, which is likely after the season,
- 28:37Speaker 3: and at least they'll try hard knowing those snaps will
- 28:42Speaker 3: Ultimately it'll be the push and pull the agents first
- 28:45Speaker 3: of the Eagles front office. Okay, we want thirty million.
- 28:49Speaker 3: Well wait a minute, he didn't play any corner and
- 28:52Speaker 3: then only did this. We see him at twenty three million,
- 28:54Speaker 3: and then they sell at twenty You got beat Hamilton's deal,
- 28:57Speaker 3: which is two years old, so maybe settle twenty seven million. Yeah, yeah,
- 29:00Speaker 3: and there's no The problem is there's no player. As
- 29:03Speaker 3: much as we've Cayle Hamilton's a great player, nobody does
- 29:06Speaker 3: what Coop can do. It's just it's close with Hamilton
- 29:10Speaker 3: but not quite.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Hmmm, Well, I want to see how Coop plays at
- 29:14Speaker 1: safety because I think Cayle Hamilton's a really damn good station.
- 29:16Speaker 1: We haven't seen at Nikoli. You're right, I think Cooper's
- 29:19Speaker 1: right there with him. You can say he's just as good,
- 29:20Speaker 1: you can say he might be better at certain things.
- 29:22Speaker 1: But I want to see how he plays safety because
- 29:25Speaker 1: Hamilton's really really good there.
- 29:27Speaker 3: And and Coopers bulked up. Man when we were there,
- 29:29Speaker 3: Atts said, holy smokes like the two mister Olympias as
- 29:33Speaker 3: I call him, the all season of all whereof all
- 29:37Speaker 3: of all players Drew Kendall who bulked up big time.
- 29:40Speaker 3: He didn't recognize him, didn't know it was him.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yeah, And Coop was like, wow.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Okay, all right, guns out, all right, we'll see. Man.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Man, they got me on a trend. I've been doing
- 29:49Speaker 1: those Uno push ups. You know, you draw four and
- 29:52Speaker 1: you start pushing it there.
- 29:53Speaker 3: I like that. It's a good game, sucking good.
- 29:56Speaker 2: All right, good stuff.
- 29:57Speaker 1: So I mean really really good, high level contract stuff
- 30:00Speaker 1: here that makes you think not only about the present, but.
- 30:03Speaker 2: The future of the Eagles secondary.
- 30:05Speaker 1: That's going to do it for this episode of Inside
- 30:08Speaker 1: the Birds, the leading podcasts and Eagles Intel, and as always.
