- 2:01Scout cookie time. Everybody loves Girl Scout cookies, so we're going to spend
- 2:06some time talking about that as well. Plusher calls and text are welcome.
- 2:09Before we get to Hannah, though, we're gonna change it up just a
- 2:13little bit. This morning. News broke late yesterday afternoon the longtime Canon County
- 2:16Commissioned President Kink Carper would be stepping aside as president of the Commission. Now
- 2:21he's staying on the Commission, he's just no longer going to be the president,
- 2:24making way for a new Commission president, that being Lance Wheeler. Worth
- 2:28noting that Commissioner Carper vacated by motion the presidency, so he will remain the
- 2:32Commissioner, but again no longer in the president's chair. And everyone knows the
- 2:38story now about the allegations against Commissioner Krper, so no need to go into
- 2:42that until there's something new to report. Commissioner Wheeler, though, is the
- 2:46new County Commission President and he joins us now. Lance, good morning,
- 2:50Good morning, Dave. How are you doing. I'm doing fine, Thank
- 2:52you for being here. Welcome to the show. And for the first time
- 2:55since two thousand and three, we call someone else to Canon County Commission President.
- 3:00Congratulations, Well, thank you very much. You know it's an honor
- 3:05really that my colleagues, Commissioner Slango, Commissioner Carper made that vote of confidence
- 3:09in me. But I tell you, you know, everyone keeps asking me,
- 3:13you know what's going to change. Twenty years Commissioner Carper has been a
- 3:15commission president. He led this commission through a water crisis, opioid crisis,
- 3:22He's led us through a pandemic. I mean, you can't check enough boxes
- 3:25of all the things that Commissioner Carper has done as Commission President. But I
- 3:30say that nothing's really going to change. We're going to continue to be transparent,
- 3:34We're going to continue to be efficient, and we're going to continue to
- 3:37do what's in the best interest of this county and the Simpsons. I know
- 3:38that's what Commissioner Slango wants, it's what Commissioner Carper wants, and it's absolutely
- 3:43what I want. And I can't wait to leave us in this year of
- 3:46twenty twenty four. Given new Kanan County Commission President is Lance Wheeler. And
- 3:50I know I'll make this quick because I know you have a lot of work
- 3:52to tend to. But it's your forum right now, I'm going to tell
- 3:55I'm going to give you the opportunity to say, what are you looking forward
- 3:59to in new year? The commission president, Well, I think it's my
- 4:03grandfather always used to tell me, if it's not broke, don't fix it.
- 4:06I mean, we've talked about just last time I was on your show,
- 4:10all the great things that has happened in Kannel County and the state of
- 4:13West Virginia. We're going to continue to do just that. We're going to
- 4:15look at recreational activity and seeing if we can invest in infrastructure in those areas,
- 4:19not just for the citizens that live here, but for tourists to bring
- 4:24people here spending their money in harder money right here in our local businesses.
- 4:29We're going to look at economic development, working with companies. You know Commissioner
- 4:31Slango, he was the pivotal person that brought in GreenPower energy. You know,
- 4:36the plant that's going to be operating electric school buses out of South Trumpton.
- 4:42You know, he started that conversation. A lot of things happen on
- 4:46the local level. A lot of people don't know that, and I think
- 4:48that that's the important aspect that we need to look at going into this year
- 4:53is how well did we do things last year? How can we imitate that?
- 4:57And how can we be better at that? And I think that we're
- 4:59going to have a really great year with some good announcements coming up. I'm
- 5:01excited. I know the rest of the Commission's excited, and I can't look.
- 5:05I can't wait to see what's going to happen, all right, what's
- 5:08going to be It is an exciting time to be here in the Kanaal Valley
- 5:12with all of these things going on, and you got some pretty big shoes
- 5:15to fill as commissioned President. But as you said, there's no big changes
- 5:18or no big not a whole lot's going to changes, as you said.
- 5:23But again, it is kind of the passing of the torch and kind of
- 5:26a milestone when you have somebody that served in president's role for as long as
- 5:29what Can't Carper did, Commission Wheeler, You and the other commissioners you know,
- 5:33including mister Carper and mister Slango, always welcome on the show. Congratulations,
- 5:38We wish you the best. We'll talk again soon. Thanks a lot.
- 5:40I appreciate it, and I will say this, I told people when
- 5:43I got elected. I had big shoes to fill, filling coffee sea stores,
- 5:46this sea. You know, he was a great man who served this
- 5:49county for a long time. Today, I think I have these bigger shoes
- 5:53to seal. But I think we're going to fill those shoes and we're going
- 5:55to do what we can. It's nice to have camp Carper next to my
- 5:58on the left side of me the meetings, making sure that we're running everything
- 6:01correctly. All right. To the new County Commission President here Kenawa County,
- 6:04Lance Wheeler, I appreciate you being here. We're talking in soon man.
- 6:08Thanks love, Thanks for having me. Dad, have a great day.

- 6:39in Hannah Gardner from the Kenal Charles Yumaine Association with this week's Adopt Me Please
- 6:43Pet of the Week. Hannah, good morning, Good morning. How are
- 6:47you. I'm doing fine? You know you missed a golden opportunity kid to
- 6:51be in studio this morning because it's Girl Scout Cookie time up in here.
- 6:58Oh god, do you have a favorite Girl Scout cookie? Yeahma, Samoa's
- 7:05a girl after my own heart. That's those in the dosey does I will,
- 7:10I will fight someone for those are my favorites. But yeah, we've
- 7:13got someone from the Girl Scouts coming a little bit later on, and they
- 7:15distributed some Girl Scout cookies and a couple other goodies here as well. So
- 7:19sorry you're not in studio to see them today. I wish I was.
- 7:26All right, Let's get to our pet of the week, and is always
- 7:29the pictures posted of our adopted Please put of the week. It's so you
- 7:31can find it on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and also on the Dave Allen
- 7:35Show on x Mango is our dog. Mango is a lovely six year old
- 7:42dog. Got the picture posted to tell us about Mango. All right,
- 7:46Well, Mango, he actually came to us as astray. He's not fixed
- 7:51yet, but he definitely will be. He so he seems to be like
- 7:58he's housebroken. I don't know that for certain, but maybe at least kennel
- 8:03trained or great trained once. He keeps a very very clean kennel. He
- 8:07waits entirely overnight and everything until the go and the next morning. He's about
- 8:15six years old. He is a male, and he is very good with
- 8:22playful female dogs, and he will do well with submissive male dogs. But
- 8:28of course we recommend a meet and greet with him, just because he is
- 8:31a little bit more pickier on his male dogs. But he does get overwhelmed
- 8:35with a lot of dogs around. So maybe if you just have either him
- 8:39as his only dog or another dog that's a female, or if you do
- 8:45a meet and greet with a male, that would probably work out just fine.
- 8:50Is a beautiful dog. He's a beautiful dog, Hannah. Yeah,
- 8:52he is very He's got that big fat head that everyone at KJA loves.
- 8:58He's very very sweet. He's gained a lot of confidence with people. He
- 9:03is a bit headshot first, but he, like I said, he has
- 9:07gained a lot of confidence. He's worked his way up and he's very sweet,
- 9:11very loving, very cute. God. But he does well on the
- 9:15leash and he doesn't show any resource guardings while he's in with us at least.
- 9:18Of course, we always advise caution, and especially with kids and stuff,
- 9:24you always want to invite caution for that. You want to introduce that
- 9:28the correct way. But yes, he is a very very good boy,
- 9:31and he is ready for someone to either sit with him on the couch or
- 9:35play with him out in a yard or something. I don't think he would
- 9:39require too much, just because he's not super hyperactive or anything, but he
- 9:43can be playful at times, so he's definitely ready for a good home.
- 9:48It charged me to believe, Hannah, that this dog got out or whatever
- 9:50is astray. I mean, I mean, that's such a beautiful dog.
- 9:54And go to my Facebook page or the X page and take a look at
- 10:00It's hard for me to believe that somebody out of you, and you don't
- 10:03know what the story is. He ran away or somebody left him unguarded or
- 10:05whatever. I just I just can't believe because he's such such a beautiful dog.
- 10:09I mean, he really really is. I understand Hannah that at least
- 10:13as of a couple of days ago, the kennels there at the shelter were
- 10:16pretty much completely full. Is that right? Yeah, so it turn of
- 10:22Peter taught here. Lately we go from being schooled to having a few kennels
- 10:26open. Okay, okay, I was based out on something on your social
- 10:30media from a couple of days ago. But well that's good, that's good
- 10:33news. Yes, yes it is. And we're hoping, of course,
- 10:37obviously we're always hoping that we eventually have very minimal dogs there. But as
- 10:43of right now, it seems like this, well, this past year,
- 10:46and we're hoping that this year kind of is a little bit less amount of
- 10:50dogs that we have, But of course last year was so many dogs that
- 10:54we took care of. So what are you in need of right now?
- 10:58As far as stuff? I mean, you're always in need of some food.
- 11:03What else? What else do you need? Yeah, so we're always
- 11:07in need of purina, puppy chow, puring a dog chow, cat chow,
- 11:11and kitten chowd But it's not that. Then we could use some trash
- 11:16bags. I know that we could use some paper towels. I know that
- 11:20blankets and cheese are always welcome because those do go fast, especially because the
- 11:26puppy room, they always always destroy those blankets, So we always always welcome
- 11:31more of those. But collars and leashes are a big thing as well.
- 11:35We always need dog collars of all sizes because we try to put one that
- 11:39comes one on every dog that comes through the door. So definitely all of
- 11:43those things would be a top thing right now. And I want to get
- 11:46this out here reminders, since we are expecting some bitter cold temperatures next weekend,
- 11:50I get those pets inside, or at least make sure that they have
- 11:54plenty because you know, there always be the arguments. I might say,
- 11:56well, this dog, if it's a husky whatever, it's bred to be
- 11:58outside. You know, I'm not going to get into that argument. You
- 12:01know, I'll leave that up to the experts. But one way or the
- 12:03other, make sure your pets are taken care of. Because we're talking about
- 12:07bitter cold temperatures next week. I mean overnight low is about seven with a
- 12:09windshill well below that make sure these pets are taken care of and that they
- 12:15A very important thing is is if you leave water outside, even for strays
- 12:18or whatever, it will freeze. So make sure that they that you check
- 12:22on that water outside. Yeah, and you definitely also I like to tell
- 12:26everyone this as well, because I know that a lot of areas have colonies
- 12:31of stray cats and stuff. If you leave blankets out and stuff, those
- 12:37could also freeze overnight. So you want to try other alternative things that you
- 12:41can use, like coats with hay in them or something. But blankets can
- 12:46definitely freeze, and then the cat could freeze to it, so you want
- 12:50to be careful with that as well. All Right, Hannah, as always
- 12:52a pleasure to talk to you. Sorry you miss girl. Scott Cookie Day.
- 12:56We'll make sure this doesn't happen next year, we'll have you in here.
- 12:58Okay, it's good a right, thanks a lot. It's Sandy Gardner
- 13:01from the Canaal Charleston. You made association with this week's Adopt Me Please pat

- 13:22All right, Mango is a dog's name. You can go over to
- 13:24my Facebook page Dave Allen Radio or X the artist formally known as Twitter to
- 13:28see Mango's picture. He is six years old male, came in as astray,
- 13:33not fixed yet but will be. Appears to be housebroken or at least
- 13:37great trained. According to Hannah, he kept a very clean kennel when he
- 13:41was there when he's still there at the shelter. Does well with female dogs
- 13:46and submissive male dogs. Probably a good idea to do a little meat and
- 13:50greet there. Tends to like other dogs, but not crazy about having too
- 13:54many around him at once, kind of the way I am with people.
- 13:58Just don't get all up in his bit with a bunch of dogs at one
- 14:01time, That's what she's kind of saying. Probably would do better with maybe
- 14:03just one other dog, or maybe with you know, probably no more than
- 14:07that, or maybe even to be the only dog. But does very well
- 14:13on leash it looks like was very shy when he came in, but he's
- 14:16doing much better now. Beautiful, beautiful dog. And we have been on
- 14:18a good run of getting these animals adopted folks. So Mango is waiting to
- 14:24join your home in the new year. Contacted folks at the Kanaw Charlest Humane
- 14:28Association. And by the way, I want to throw this out here our

- 17:59doctor Casey Saxsonde Valley, Doctor Sachs, Good morning, welcome to the show.
- 18:02Good morning, Dave. It's great to be here with you today.
- 18:04You know you are missing girl Scott Cookie day here this morning. You realize
- 18:08that, right, Yeah, but you know after the Christmas I had missing
- 18:12might be the wrong word, okay, y, yeah, yeah, you
- 18:17threw down on some groceries. Is that what you're saying? Oh my gosh,
- 18:19I really overdid it with the food. Well, and that what the
- 18:22holiday season's for. Maybe I thought it was to be with my family,
- 18:26but apparently this year it was also about food. Well, look, you
- 18:29know for Mappalachia, you know which I know you're not from here, but
- 18:33as they say, you got here as quickly as you could. Everything revolves
- 18:36around the food, you know, no matter what kind of gathering it is.
- 18:37And so that's the way it is in my family as well. So
- 18:41happy New Year to you and the folks there at Bridge Valley. So how
- 18:45do the semesters work at Bridge Valley? I mean, as opposed to other
- 18:48institutions. Are we into a new semester? How does it work there?
- 18:51It's a great question. Yes, we start our spring semester on Tuesday.
- 18:55We're really excited. We have one hundred and eighty nine more students this spring
- 18:57than we did last Sprink. People are really thinking about career changes and thinking
- 19:03about things that they could do that will change their lives or their families' lives,
- 19:07and they're signing up for class at Bridge Valley. So we're very excited
- 19:11to start our new semester. We run a spring, a summer, nfall
- 19:14term most like other institutions, but we also have a whole bunch of classes
- 19:19that start sort of off pattern, Like we do a real estate certification and
- 19:23that doesn't start on Tuesday. It starts later in the term because that's what
- 19:27the realators tell us that they need. Okay, well, and again,
- 19:32it's just another example, and I talk about this, Doctor six every time
- 19:34you're on the show. It's an example of the folks at Bridge Valley listening
- 19:37to what the business community wants and needs. That's the truth. We really
- 19:41try hard to be responsive to what the business community is asking us for.
- 19:45And if you're a business person then you have a training need, please let
- 19:49us know what it is so that we can be responsive to that. We'll
- 19:53talk about this when Academy WI n Academy. We talked about it in the
- 19:59past, but on the you just had some at least one, I believe,
- 20:02informational session about that earlier this week. Another one's going to come up
- 20:04on Thursday, the twenty fifth of January. What is this WIN Academy all
- 20:08about. Yeah, the WIN Academy is a charter school. It's an opportunity
- 20:14for students who are juniors and seniors in high school to start college early.
- 20:18And so we've had eighteen students this year. We'll actually have seven who graduate
- 20:22from high school in May. They will have completed a full year of college
- 20:25classes alongside their high school and the ones who started with us as juniors will
- 20:30have two years of college under their belts. And they're all ready to transfer
- 20:34to four year institutions or to stay on with us and complete their degrees as
- 20:38nurses, or we just this faller starting in manufacturing technology. We're really excited
- 20:45about it. And as I said, you had one informational session earlier this
- 20:48week. The other one is coming up on Thursday, the twenty fifth,
- 20:52right, that's right, So January twenty fifth, at five point thirty,
- 20:55come on up to the Booker t Washington Wing at Building two thousand and the
- 20:57Tech Park in South Charles since if your family's interested, or if you have
- 21:02a grandkid who's maybe interested. We had a wonderful poppa come up this last
- 21:06week who had some terrific questions about the academy and what was going to happen
- 21:11with his granddaughter who's planning on starting this fall with us as a junior.
- 21:15And I love the fact, you know you're embracing the culture so well here,
- 21:18doctor Sachs. I love the fact that you said Popaul Well, I
- 21:22mean that's what she called him. I know. That's great, that's great,
- 21:26You're becoming one of us. I like that. I like that.
- 21:29I was following along watching the Governor's State of the State the other night,
- 21:33and there was a there was a pretty big honor for one of the students
- 21:37from your nursing program, a graduate in fact, talk about that. Yes,
- 21:41Genevieve Rain Johnson, thank you for asking about her, Dave. She's
- 21:45astonishing.'re really proud of her. She took advantage of our new sixteen
- 21:49months accelerated nursing program, so she actually completed her RN degree in sixteen months,
- 21:55which is astonishing and really a tribute to her her drive and intell leigence.
- 22:00That's five months earlier than most people graduate from a nursing program, and
- 22:04she got into the workforce earlier. So Thomas Memorial Hospital hired her and her
- 22:08colleagues actually in our program honored her at graduation with what's called our Spirit of
- 22:14Nursing Awards. It's given to the student who displays the most promise and the
- 22:18most commitment to the nursing profession. So we were really excited that the governor
- 22:22honored her at the State of the State. And I know Thomas Memorial Hospital
- 22:26was also very excited that they honored her as one of their staff members during
- 22:29that speech too. And we talk about it all the time when you're on
- 22:32the show, and I mean it's been well documented in other places as well.
- 22:34Doctor Saxley critical need for medical professionals instead of West Virginia, and I
- 22:41think that's really why Governor Justice took the opportunity to say how astonishing she is
- 22:45that anything we can do to help encourage West Virginians to get into healthcare.
- 22:49It's a huge need in the workforce, it's a huge need for our communities,
- 22:52and the more people who we can encourage to join the RN program at
- 22:56Bridge Valley. It really does accelerate their career. And of course, again
- 23:02there's just so many different partnerships that you folks have going on with people in
- 23:04the business community. We spent some time talking with the folks over at the
- 23:08Putnam County Development Authority recently they've been on the show a couple of times talking
- 23:11about the partnerships that you have with them as well. Yes, we love
- 23:15the Putnam County Development Authority. We work with them on a program that's called
- 23:18SANE West Virginia. It's the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education. And what that
- 23:25program does is it partners with business and industry, the Putnam County Development Authority
- 23:29and US at Bridge Valley to help get students into manufacturing and then partner with
- 23:34different manufacturers in the area so that they work three days a week, they
- 23:38come to school two days a week, and almost always the manufacturer ends up
- 23:42hiring the student at the end of the program. And we do want to
- 23:45mention that any of these things we talk about, I always want to direct
- 23:48people over to your website because you had a really good one. It's a
- 23:51Bridge Valley dot edu slash apprenticeships or slash, whatever it is that you want
- 23:56to look at. I spent a lot of time talking about the apprenticeship program
- 23:59because that's something big that you guys do there where you can basically custom tailor
- 24:06an IT training program. That's just one of them. I'm talking about it
- 24:08right now to a little are no costs with the fifty to fifty salary matches,
- 24:14I say every day. I mean, it's amazing. Yes, that's
- 24:17our learning and program and it's wonderful. Employers really like that one. It's
- 24:19an opportunity for us to go jointly together and essentially apply for a grant that
- 24:25lets us match wages with the employer for whoever is in the training program.
- 24:30So that's a really great win because it allows us to keep somebody in school.
- 24:34One of the things that we saw is happening before we really did learn
- 24:37and earn on a broad scale, was that students would get enough training to
- 24:41go to work and then they would just work full time. So, you
- 24:45know, you get that Cisco Cyber certification and you're ready to work, and
- 24:48that's wonderful. But if we can keep you in training, we know you
- 24:52become a better employee and so that's that's better for our employers. It's just
- 24:56figuring out how do we get that commitment to the schedule and really keeping everybody
- 25:00on the same page. So splitting wages with employers seems to really help make
- 25:04that happen. Well. Again, what I always say is, every time
- 25:08you're on, you folks really really put a lot into working with the business
- 25:12community and finding out what it is that they need before we let you go.
- 25:15Anything else. We haven't covered on the segment today, but we're just
- 25:21starting conversations to do some more expansions in our business program, so I would
- 25:25say maybe stay tuned for that. We're awfully excited. We have some strong
- 25:29offerings right now in entrepreneurship and real estate, but we're starting to work with
- 25:33the insurance community to figure out things that we can do for them in insurance
- 25:37also, so exciting stuff on the horizon. Indeed, Doctor Casey Sachs,
- 25:41by the way, I know you said to you were abstaining from Girl Scout
- 25:45cookies after the holidays, but I had to ask you, do you have
- 25:47a favorite Girl Scout cookie? That's the kind of a question I'm asking Obviously,
- 25:49it just so o well, no, never mind. I was going
- 25:52to say it just so happened. I had a box of fend Mints,
- 25:55but by the time jareded in the news department got ahold of them, and
- 25:57my producer and my boss, Oh Cooper, got a hold no thin mant.
- 26:02Sorry, the thin Mint supplies thin up here in the studio, so
- 26:07you wouldn't have any thin mints if you were here. Anyway, How can
- 26:08we interest you in a nice girl's got coffee mug? We do have that.
- 26:12What's your favorite? Dave, Yes, that's the answer. All of
- 26:17them? Uh Samoas or Dosi does would be my favorite? Oh? Good
- 26:22choices, good choice choice. Jeff Jenkins is also a fan of the Samoa's.
- 26:26I just learned that as he tackled me in the hall and took them
- 26:29from me. So all right, cookie time is over. Notter Casey Sacks,
- 26:32It's always pleasure to talk to you. We'll talk to you get here

- 31:55Dell Cooper is our producer today, how about a little Girl Scout Cookie Time.
- 31:59Joel Gates is a senior manager of Marketing and Communications at Girl Scouts,
- 32:02a black dime that you joined us now, Joel, good morning, Good
- 32:06morning, Thanks for having me. You have really made the rounds this morning,
- 32:08have you not? Because you were hanging out with Rob down in a
- 32:12superstar country. I understand you spend a little time with Steven, Jenny and
- 32:15V one hundred as well. Yeah. Girl Scout Cookie Season is here and
- 32:17we're trying to spread the word as best as possible. All right, So
- 32:22I joke about this a little bit, but Joel, this is truly something
- 32:24that people look forward to every year. I see people posting on Facebook and
- 32:29whatnot saying who's got Girl Scout cookies. It's almost like it's some sort of
- 32:31illicit thing, you know, who's got the hookup, who's got the hookup
- 32:35on the dose he does? It's true, It's true. Everybody loves Girl
- 32:37Scout cookies, and it's even more rewarding when you remember that they helped fuel
- 32:42so many amazing adventures for girls. All Right, so I've been asking everybody
- 32:45else. I have to ask you, what's your favorite? My favorite is
- 32:47a tag along? The tag alongs. Okay, so that's what you don't
- 32:51hear a lot. I like the tag alongs as well. They're delicious.
- 32:53Well, okay, my producer Dale Cooper just said that that's also his favorite
- 32:58as well. Hey, great taste. Yeah, and you know, it
- 33:00is kind of interesting. Like I said, you you showed up earlier because
- 33:04you did some of the rounds of the other stations, and then you had
- 33:07to wait around. I told Jess, we'll just go do do work and
- 33:09then come back and see us later. But you did bring us some Girl
- 33:12Scout cookies this morning, and those tin mints apparently were a We're a big
- 33:16hit. But Jeff Jenkins are our news director. We love him some Samoas.
- 33:22I just found that out about Jeff works with them all this time and
- 33:24just learned it. He'd kill a guy. I think for some well,
- 33:29what is the most popular as far as sales go is Yuah, So I'd
- 33:32probably say our top two favorites are the Samoas and the Thin Men's. Each
- 33:36year we kind of have a cookie bracket around March Madness. We ask folks
- 33:39to pick their favorite Girl Scout cookie in For the past two years in a
- 33:43row, it's been the Samoa. Any idea how the whole thing with Girl
- 33:46Scout cookie started? I mean, why is this the thing? I mean
- 33:50is it? I mean you could probably google it, I guess, but
- 33:51I mean you don't have to do it now. But I'm just saying because
- 33:52if this is something that the Girl Scouts are are really known for and everybody
- 33:57looks forward to it. But I wonder who came up with that idea and
- 34:00said, you know what, let's sell some cookies. Yeah. So the
- 34:01sale actually started in nineteen seventeen as a way for girls to create funds to
- 34:07help fuel girl at adventures, and that still holds true today. I mean,
- 34:10every purchase of a Girl Scout cookie helps create an amazing adventure for girls
- 34:15in the future, whether that's giving back traveling, making a difference. I
- 34:19mean, it's just really remarkable how much of a difference in Girl Scout Cookie
- 34:23can create. Talking to Joel Gates again, who is the senior manager of
- 34:27marketing and Communications at Girl Scouts with Black Diamond, what's new this year?
- 34:30So we do not have a new Girl Scout Cookie bringing back our you know,
- 34:35classic nine cookie lineup that everyone knows and loves. Features the adventure ful
- 34:39samoas tag alongs, all of the classic favorites that everyone knows and loves.
- 34:45And I have seen this, I guess, just kind of pop up with
- 34:50over the last couple of years that I live in Tay's Valley, and a
- 34:52lot of times you'll see people that set up, you know, these Girl
- 34:55Scouts and their parents just set up little pop up shops to sell the Girl
- 34:59Scout cookies right there beside the road. Yeah. Absolutely, So the sale
- 35:02actually starts with an order card, and we also offer some digital ordering where
- 35:07girls can set up an online site. It's a really great way for girls
- 35:09to learn some online entrepreneurial skills. But then when the cookies are delivered,
- 35:15in late February. That's when our troops set up the cookie booths also mentioned,
- 35:19and they're all throughout the community. It's a really great way for people
- 35:22to get a double head of cookies. You know, you order them now
- 35:24and then you can also pick them up out a booth later. Now,
- 35:28are there any because my good friend Millie Snyder is on about once a month
- 35:30from the Shape Shop and she's always watching out for what I eat and telling
- 35:35me what I should need. Are there any healthy options or healthy er options
- 35:38for Girl Scout cookies? I would say all Girl Scout cookies. We do
- 35:44offer a gluten free option, So I would say that's a healthy option that
- 35:47you know, provides a Girl Scout cookie for everyone. And I will say
- 35:52this as far as gluten free food items in general, go. I mean,
- 35:55I don't know why this is, but more and more people are asking
- 35:59for for gluten free items of whether it's donuts or whatever. People are always
- 36:04asking about that stuff. So you do offer this, Yes, I understand.
- 36:07There was one cookie that didn't make the cut this year that was ready
- 36:09to tell us the sad story of raspberry. Yeah, so Raspberry Rallies.
- 36:14It was a really great promotion that we offered last year. Folks may remember
- 36:17that it was an online only cookie. As I mentioned, it was just
- 36:21a really great way for girls to help boost those online entrepreneurial skills. You
- 36:25know, we didn't bring it back this year, but we don't know what
- 36:29the future looks like. So may make its return, it may not.
- 36:31You'll just have to wait and see. And that's kind of interesting the thought
- 36:37process. I mean, is there somewhere is there a Girl Scout Lab,
- 36:43so please sign Dale Cooper and I up to to work there that Were you
- 36:47just test out cookies or do you take recommendations from the public and as to
- 36:52what makes the cut and what doesn't or any new flavors. So I can't
- 36:55really speak to that too much, but I would say that definitely. You
- 36:59know, National Girls Scouts, they try to keep their finger on the pulse
- 37:01of what consumers really know and what they love, and they really try to
- 37:05stay up to date with current trends, so as times evolve, you know,
- 37:08it's probably hard to predict what cookies we could be offering, but we
- 37:12really try to provide some really delicious treats that everyone would love. And I
- 37:17will say that I really really like the fact that you're kind of trying this
- 37:22entrepreneurial spirit in with them and teaching them about how to how to sell these
- 37:27things online, how to market themselves. Yeah, I mean Girl Scouting at
- 37:30its core, it's just really intended to help teach girls how to be,
- 37:35you know, better individuals. We try to build girls of courage, confidence
- 37:38and character who make the world a better place and you know, providing those
- 37:42entrepreneurial skills that help girls kind of grow and have the courage to start their
- 37:45own business, lead a company, et cetera. I mean, it's really
- 37:50the mission of what we do each day at Girl Scouts. So how are
- 37:55the numbers for Girl Scouts, Because we hear this constantly about our young people,
- 38:00is that they just don't participate in a lot anymore. Chris Lawrence does
- 38:05our outdoor show on his Morning Reports this morning, was talking about the number
- 38:09of youngsters that don't hunt anymore, and they don't participate in hunting or fishing
- 38:15anymore, you know, for one reason or another, and that the numbers
- 38:17are going greatly down and it's causing financial issues with the tax base and things
- 38:22of that nature. We hear from our youth sports people that maybe kids aren't
- 38:25as quite as involved. Is that something that you found in scouting that the
- 38:30numbers are down, that kids just aren't getting involved anymore. So, you
- 38:31know, definitely since the pandemic, we've noticed our numbers have decreased. But
- 38:36you know, we at Girl Scouts, we really try to stay relevant and
- 38:39provide girls the experience experiences that they may be missing out in the classroom.
- 38:44You know, Girl Scouting is a really great way to build those social skills
- 38:47through the Girl Scout cookie sale, you know, where in a classroom where
- 38:51you're going to be learning those entrepreneurial skills to one day own your business.
- 38:53So we really try to fill in the blanks where girls may be missing out
- 38:58in schools. We are seeing our numbers increasing absolutely. You know, if
- 39:01anyone is interested in learning more about Girl Scouting or becoming a Girl Scout,
- 39:06they can visit our Facebook page and we can get you set up. It
- 39:09truly is one of the most impactful experiences that a young girl can take on,
- 39:15and you know, it's girl led, so the possibilities for adventure are
- 39:20endless. And you know, just from seeing the work that we do day
- 39:23in and day out, it's It's a no brainer to me that Girl Scouting
- 39:27is really beneficial. And we talk about the cookies and that's why you're here
- 39:30today. But again this is part just part of what you do teaching the
- 39:34young ladies the entrepreneurship, but the other skills that they learned to have absolutely
- 39:38nothing to do with cookies or do with sales. There's a whole lot of
- 39:42other things that they learn when they're part of an organization like the girls.
- 39:45Absolutely we focus on the outdoors, stem and so on and so forth.
- 39:49I mean, it's we really try to cover all the bases, all right.
- 39:52So what is that Facebook page again you mentioned? Yeah, so Girl
- 39:54Scouts of Black Diamond Council on Facebook. That's where you can find information about
- 40:00purchasing cookies, all of our relevant updates, and you can see all the
- 40:04amazing work that local Girl Scouts are doing across the community. Do we still
- 40:07allow the young the youngsters to go door to door? Is that subtle thing?
- 40:10Because I know when I was a kid, I wasn't a Girl Scout,
- 40:13but I know when I was a kid that you would see, you
- 40:15know, kids doing that. Is that sort of thing? They still go
- 40:19door to door, through through safer communities. Once that your parents feel safer,
- 40:22I would say, we really try to prioritize safety. As I said,
- 40:23you know, we have a physical order card that girls can you know,
- 40:27offer, but then we also have the online sites. I would say
- 40:30the most you know, customer facing option that we have are the cookie Boosts,
- 40:35and that's a safe way for girls to be out in the community,
- 40:37be as a true and engaged with customers in that way. All right,
- 40:40Well, and the season officially kicks off when it kicked off yesterday, kicked
- 40:45off yesterday morning. Are officially in Girl Scout Cookie season. All right,
- 40:49it is here, all right? Thank you and thank you for the gifts
- 40:52this morning. As I said, Joelle showed up earlier and she gave us
- 40:54a couple of bags or a couple of nice coffee mugs as well. I
- 40:59do appreciate it, and everybody in our news department especially enjoyed the Girl Scout
- 41:04cookies this morning. Thanks a lot. Thank you so much. Joel Gates

- 44:00Miley Snyder from the Shape Shop, Milly will be with us. I
- 44:01think next Wednesday we'll be on the show. I mean, I listen to
- 44:08what Mellley says. Yes I do, and I'm one of these people when
- 44:10it comes to food that you know, I started eating when I was real
- 44:16young, and I just really never got out of the habit, to be
- 44:20honest with you, And if food is healthy and it's enjoyable, then yes,
- 44:25I mean I talk about the salmon over at Millie Shape Shop. It's
- 44:29absolutely incredible. And Coope, I know you're a salmon guy. Go to
- 44:31the Shape Shop and try their salmon. It is really, really, really
- 44:35really good. I've had it at any time I'm there. That's usually what
- 44:37I get for lunch, is the salmon over there. But yeah, I
- 44:43listen. But you know what I really like hot dogs. I was down
- 44:46in the homeland of Logan County yesterday where I be from, and I had
- 44:54to make a stop at the premiere hot dog destination in the state of Way,
- 45:00Virginia, and that is Morrison's Drive In. And anybody that's ever visited
- 45:02Logan you know all about Morrison's Drive In. It's the greatest hot dogs in
- 45:07the world. I mean, my man Jay Mayhorn that owns Morrison's now literally
- 45:13ships that hot dog chili or sauce, however you prefer it. I prefer
- 45:16chili all over the country. And if you've never had a Morrison's Hot Dog
- 45:21and you got to get onion rings to go with it. It's absolutely fantastic.
- 45:23So to answer your question, text, do I follow Millie's advice?
- 45:27I listen intently to what Millie has to say and I try my best to
- 45:34do that. How's that for an answer? But Dave Island Showing five eighty
- 45:37Live is brought to you part by Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law
- 45:40firm. I think I'm going to set up a wrestling ring in the Capital
- 45:45Rotunda, put on a wrestling event called Capital Mania. The main event Governor
- 45:52Jim Justice versus cent of Finance Chaer Eric Tar Eric and I gave him this
- 45:58name several months ago when I kind of with this idea, Eric the Terminator
- 46:01Tar. Now, Brad mclhenny has a story posted at the website wv metronews
- 46:07dot com. The Governor's financial team is proposing a general fun budget of five
- 46:13point two two billion dollars. Now, that number, of course includes tax
- 46:17cuts and a whole lot of spending increases, which would include pay raises for
- 46:23state workers. Again, Brad has all the numbers in detail laid out on
- 46:28the website wv metro news dot com. The cent of f named share Tar
- 46:35after the governor stated the state the other night made some comments to the media,
- 46:39including to our own Jeff Jenkins, basically calling what the governor was calling
- 46:45for a wish list and saying that this was greatly par phrasing nothing more than
- 46:51just part of his senatorial campaign. Of course, he's running for the seat
- 46:54that Joe Manchin currently owns senator mansion and who is not running for reelection,
- 46:59and he'll will have a primary opponent in Congressman Alex Mouney. So Eric Tarr
- 47:05basically just comes out and says, you know, whatever the governor's proposing for
- 47:07all this this spending increases as he calls a five point two two billion that
- 47:14is just ways to kind of bolster his numbers for his campaign for Senate.
- 47:20Well, the governor in turn referred to and he may have heard this because
- 47:23they played it throughout the morning in the Morning News, the governor referred to
- 47:27Senator Eric Tarr as a quote boy living in a man's world and said that
- 47:34Senator Tar Eric Tarr needs to quote grow up ouch and this feud, if
- 47:43you will, between the two really shows no signs of letting up, and
- 47:46Senator Tarr is not one that's going to back down that. I'm not so
- 47:50sure that Governor Justice is the one that's going to back down either on this.
- 47:54So I can't wait to see how this whole thing plays out over the
- 48:00fifty some odd days. Uh. It really, it really, it really
- 48:05should be interesting because again, Jim Justice is in a battle for state Senate.
- 48:12The polls show that he is way, way way ahead of Congressman Alex
- 48:15Mooney AFT. Now that we're into the first of the year, you're going
- 48:19to start to see the airwaves of radio and television and your social media feed,
- 48:22newspapers or whatever that are going to be flooded with a whole lot of
- 48:27anti Jim Justice stuff, as anti any political figure. You know, it's
- 48:30all, it's all going to be coming in. But unless something drastically changes,
- 48:37Jim Justice is going to be an next US senator. Uh and it'll
- 48:39be serving along with the Senator Shelley Moore Capitao, who's not up this time
- 48:43for reelection. So yeah, I don't know. I'm sure that the the
- 48:49Tar folks are not I don't know that they're backing Alex Mooney, but they
- 48:52dang sure ain't backing Jim Justice. I will I will tell you that.
- 48:55So uh well, we'll see what happens. Tex says to day, your
- 49:00wrestling match would consist of Republicans talking trash and then disappearing when it comes time
- 49:05to put up. These are the all hat and no cattle type of folks.
- 49:09It's a texture. Get ready to make a difference. WVRC Media,
- 49:15Charleston, Drop your Socks. We're doing something called the Drop your Socks Drive
- 49:19Through. Now. We are going to start this on Thursday. That's the
- 49:22date. That's the only days. Matter of fact, we're going to be
- 49:25teaming up with the Thornhill Auto Group, folks sponsors of this show to help
- 49:29out our neighbors in need. What we are doing we are asking you to
- 49:31bring your new socks packages of new socks. Whether it's one or whether it
- 49:37is two, or whether it is a box, We'll take whatever. Bring
- 49:40it to our studios at eleven eleven Virginia Street East and Charleston this Thursday.
- 49:45And we're teaming up with folks in Mountain Mission to help. As they say,
- 49:49the ad copy says, warm the hearts and feet of many this winter.
- 49:52We're excited about it. And a big shout out to the folks at
- 49:55the Thornhill Auto Group for making all of that happen. So get ready to
- 50:00bring those socks in here. Texta says you need to try a dancing dog
- 50:06at Elk City. The hot dogs are out of this world on toasted buns.
- 50:09I knew eventually, Coop, this would just turn into a food show.
- 50:12If I talked about Girl Scout cookies long enough, it would turn into
- 50:15a food show. I had this idea yesterday, Coop, because I said,
- 50:19I had to go down to my homeland of Logan County yesterday and I
- 50:22made a stop by Morrisons and I got a bag of hot dogs, and
- 50:24I had this yes I said, a bag of hot dogs, and I
- 50:28had this idea. I thought, you know, what would be really cool
- 50:31is if I went to Morrison's, which is a drive in by the way.
- 50:34You know, there's no dining inside. Either sit on the picnic tables
- 50:37or in your car. You get it to go. And I thought,
- 50:39what would be really really cool, because I'll be coming back through Charleston about
- 50:43three or three thirty, is if I got a bag of hot dogs and
- 50:45I stopped by Hotline here, which Coop hosts along with Dave Weekly, and
- 50:51I brought my good friends Dave Weekly and Dale Cooper some hot dogs for Morrisons.
- 50:55Well, it was an idea I had, but then I decided not
- 51:00to. And I really don't have an excuse why, Coop, I'm sorry.
- 51:01I was gonna say, wait a minute, why I even tell the
- 51:06story, Well, because I want you to know I was thinking about my
- 51:08boss. But I got the have you ever had a Morrison's hot down?
- 51:13I don't think so. All right, Well it's it's the chili tends to
- 51:16be a little bit spicy. Okay. They wrap them in this cellophane type
- 51:22material, takes about thirty seconds to unwrap them, and they tend to be
- 51:25a little bit smaller. So if you're a person that eats let's say two
- 51:30hot dogs, you probably would eat three Morrison's hot dogs. You eat one,
- 51:32you probably eat two. But it's great. So I promise Coop,
- 51:37the next time I'm down there, I will bring you and mister Weekly's hot
- 51:39dogs. I won't just talk about it this time. Okay, all right,
- 51:43Tex says check Justice and Tar's business history. The right guy is controlling
- 51:49the state purse strings talking about senaphn Inch Chair Eric tar all Right, I
- 51:54gotta wrap it up. My day, of course, is Martin Luther King
- 51:57Day, and it's a federal holiday, so many of your your governmental agencies
- 52:00will be closed on Monday. Actually, there's some things going on in the
- 52:04community, several things related to Martin Luther King Day. Best played one of
